THE LAST WORD

The changing world

As the world returns to a semblance of normality, I look back at what we have been through over the past 20 months. Is it me, or has it been surreal?

Covid-19 has left its mark on all of us, in some way or another.

Unfortunately, there has been much loss, which has led to another pandemic, the increase of mental health issues. This is something that has to be addressed. We have all been through – probably – the most stressful times in all our existence. Something has to give and, unfortunately, there is only so much any of us can take. As we resume our regular lives, we just need to remember to take care of how we treat others and, as exciting as it is to do things again, just be mindful of others and what they are Irene going through or have endured. Our environment is high paced, and short deadlines can lead to many a stressful situation.

At the moment, the business events industry is a hive of activity and it seems like everyone wants to meet, or have a conference, incentive, exhibition or event right now. Just remember to breathe, take it as it comes and be kind and patient, as there will be challenging situations that will arise, that is a given.

The fact that our industry is up and running again brings much happiness. It brings me much joy to see our industry being productive after all these months. Hotels and guesthouses are getting ready for the December holidays with much anticipation.

Yet, there is a small part of me that remains fearful of the possibility of a fourth wave. What will it mean for the business events sector? It is dependent on our government and what restrictions they may or may not impose. Quite bluntly, we can’t afford another hard lockdown.

On a positive note though, the announcement that Meetings Africa and Africa’s Tourism Indaba’s return in 2022 is a very exciting one for me. Finally, there is movement again in the right direction. This also gives me much hope.

Meetings Africa remains my most favourite local trade show. Next year’s show will be a reunion of industry colleagues who will finally get to see one another other in person, after many months. I can’t wait!

The world has changed, we have changed, but we are still here, and we are here for each other, through it all.

Irene
