KNOW WHAT YOU’RE BUYING
When it comes to buying art the choice is vast. Often you won’t know what you are looking for until you see it but having made the decision to buy there is plenty to consider should you buy an original or go for a limited-edition print for example, do you want something three dimensional perhaps. Understanding art-world terminology is a good place to start to know what you’re buying. There are so many motivations that move us to buying art so having a mental checklist of priorities is a good idea. Be it the skill of the artist, the subject matter, the aesthetic nature of the piece or simply which wall you want to fill. Understanding what you are buying in terms of medium is important, but the bottom line is let yourself fall in love and be carried away. Original pieces of art are exactly as stated – they are one of a kind but do not have to cost a fortune. The price tags for such pieces will depend on the artists’ artistic standing, their reputation in the art world as well as material costs. Owning an original piece of art whether it be from an up and coming or established artist can give you a thrill as you have the honour of taking just a little piece of that artist’s soul home with you. As a statement piece that wows viewers or something small and detailed that means something meaningful to you, buying an original is special. John Ryan - Heather and The Three Sisters, Glencoe OIL

KNOW WHAT YOU’RE BUYING prints. The edition may be limited and is sometimes signed in pencil by the artist. Some artists create giclées of their original work which is a much more affordable way of owning an image from their portfolio. At our fairs we stipulate that giclee prints should not exceed editions of 100.
pencil moving onto the more textured work of textile art, resin and collage. Most artists tend to work with certain mediums that suit their style of work and your preference for certain media can influence your art buying decisions. An original print is a work of art created and printed by hand, by the artist from a plate, block, stone, or stencil that has been hand created for the sole purpose of producing the desired image. The plates or stencils often bear Sarah Cemmick no resemblance to the finished work Mackerel of art, which means it is not a copy or LIMITED EDITION a reproduction of anything. The image ORIGINAL PRINT reverses in the printing process so the artist has to think and draw backwards. Each print produced is technically a unique work although produced as a signed and numbered multiple. An original print is actually one piece of a multiple original work of art – the edition. Traditionally each print is numbered as a fraction and signed in pencil. Original print mediums fall into three main types - etching, screen printing and lithography.

Then there’s the very tempting choice of 3D artwork to consider. Sandra Callow Glass Sculpture, ceramics and glasswork. - Silver Grey Ribbon Vase You will find some of these pieces are GLASS editioned depending on how they have been produced. Ask the artist or gallerist to explain the creative process to understand how a piece came about. Within the sculpture medium you will find work in bronze, resin, wood, stone, all manner of metals, papier-mâché, glass and other resistant materials. without artistic motivation whereas a distinguishing feature of fine art photography is that recording a subject is only part of the story. These artists use photography as a means to express their vision and style. Fine art photography uses high quality conservation papers and traditional printing processes like silver gelatine and platinum whereas today some print digitally using conservation inks and paper. Edition sizes tend to be small for fine art photography and larger for digital work. If you are buying an editioned piece of work do make sure the artist has signed and numbered it. Know your space, consider scale and colour but don’t forget the art you pick should outlast décor trends. Bear in mind where the piece will be hung such as direct sunlight or humidity; how about a piece of glass or ceramic for the bathroom. The right piece of artwork can add life to a room, express your personality and bring you lifelong pleasure. We feel sure you will find something you just won’t be able to leave without.
