BACKGROUND Presenting contemporary art in craft media by regional, national, and international artists since 1971, Contemporary Craft (CC) offers cutting edge exhibitions focusing on multicultural diversity and non-mainstream art, as well as a range of studio workshops, community outreach programs, and a retail store. With its mission of engaging the public in creative experiences through contemporary craft, CC offers meaningful art opportunities for more than 145,000 people a year through four core values: providing vital support for artists; filling critical gaps in public education; sharing cross-cultural perspectives; and using art to build community.

THE ART OF ASSEMBLAGE Saturday, October 6 1-4pm Instructor: Gerry Florida Level: Beginner/Intermediate Learn to reinvent leftover supplies and consider the creative world of assemblage jewelry! Students will create a beautiful bracelet or necklace while exploring composition as applied in jewelry. Basic assemblage, cold connection techniques, and simple wiring skills will be covered. Bring your own found objects and beads or purchase supplies from the instructor. Tuition: $40 Materials: A list will be provided. FANTASTIC RECYCLED PLASTIC Saturday, October 13 10am-5pm Instructor: David Edgar Level: Beginner/Intermediate Delve into the art of recycled materials! Create colorful and lightweight artworks from plastics with a festive, Pop Art aesthetic and an environmental subtext. Both large and small assembly project examples will be showcased. FREEFORM WIRE JEWELRY Saturday, October 27 1-4pm Instructor: Gerry Florida Level: Beginner Bring your imagination and explore the abstract world of freeform wire wrapping! This workshop will introduce students to the freedom of working with wire in jewelry. Basic knowledge of working with wire, metal gauges, and tools will be covered. The process is conducive to wrapping many materials - both conventional and unconventional. Tuition: $40 Materials: A list will be provided. CROCHET WIRE BEADED NECKLACE Saturday, November 3 1-4pm Instructor: Kitty Savel Level: Beginner/Intermediate Explore how to crochet with wire and create jewelry using a simple chain-stitch technique. Students will learn how to pick the right wire to use and discover how to connect wire in delicate and intricate ways. Beads and stones can be incorporated resulting in a colorful, unique necklace. THE ART OF MOSAIC JEWELRY Saturday, December 1 10am-5pm Instructor: Rachel Sager Level: Beginner/Intermediate Learn to work small in this magical mosaic workshop. Making mosaic jewelry is a highly rewarding process that requires very little space or mess to achieve stunning results. This workshop offers an introduction to the tools of the trade for the micro-mosaicist. Students can finish a silver-plated pendant that will be ready to wear the next day. INTRO TO MOSAIC PROCESSING Saturday, January 5; 10am-5pm Sunday, January 6; 10am-1pm Instructor: Christina Fisher Level: Beginner/Intermediate In this two-day workshop, students will learn about the history of mosaic art and master techniques used in the creation of this beautiful art form. Technical instruction will include design, shaping, application, curing, and guidance in using these techniques to make a small wall-hanging mosaic. Tuition: $200 Materials: Included
ENCAUSTICS Saturday, January 12 10am-3pm Instructor: Katy Dement Level: Beginner Students will learn the process of using colored pigments added to heated wax to achieve encaustic painting. Materials can be encased or collaged onto the surface through embellishment techniques such as sculpting, collaging, layering, and scraping. Students will complete a sampler of encaustic techniques and create several small art works to take home. Tuition: $75 Materials: Included
WOVEN BROOCH: SMALL SCULPTURES Saturday, January 26 10am-5pm Instructor: Laura Tabakman Level: Beginner/Intermediate Students will use wire to weave a pod-like basket and then will be guided through the process of incorporating polymer clay components to add color and design. HAND DESIGN TO DIGITAL 2 Saturdays, September 29 & October 6 10am-4pm Instructor: Amber Coppings Level: Beginner/Intermediate/ Advanced Students will learn to create a sampler of shibori hand-dyed fabrics based on their simple sketches from the first session. Then, students will use their fabric samples to create digital pattern designs that can be used on print-on-demand websites such as Spoonflower. Some experience with Adobe Photoshop is necessary. BATIK & ADIRE INDIGO DYEING Saturday, November 10 10am-5pm Instructor: Yemisi Ajayi Level: Beginner/Intermediate This workshop provides an overview of batik and adire (tie-dye), two traditional Yoruba cloth dyeing processes. Students will learn immersion and compression dyeing, as well as resist techniques using melted wax. ENGLISH PAPER PIECING Saturday, March 9 10am-5pm Instructor: Jodi McLaughlin Level: Beginner/Intermediate/ Advanced Learn English Paper Piecing (EPP), a quilting technique, to create gorgeous geometric shapes with your favorite fabric scraps. Students will work with a hexagon and other basic shapes to consider quilt layout, pattern, and color composition. Embellish an existing textile or begin a new EPP from scratch. RUST DYEING 2 Saturdays, April 6 & 13 1-4pm Instructor: Rose Clancy Level: Beginner/Intermediate Transform plain linens into beautiful stained fabrics by using rusty tools, vinegar, water, and a bit of time. Learn a variety of wrapping techniques and staining tips to create object bundles that will then be exposed to the natural elements for a week. Students will experiment with different rusty materials and collaborate with nature to make interestingly stained fabric. Tuition: $95 Materials: Instructor will provide a list
THE ART OF MARBLING FABRIC Sunday, April 28 11am-4pm Instructor: Melissa DeLisio Level: Beginner/Intermediate Use ancient marbling techniques to create one-of-a-kind fabrics. Play with color and pattern to create contemporary and traditional free-form designs. Students will become versed in a variety of products to use in fabric and paper marbling and will walk away with a beautiful stash of fabric to use in their next project. Have some studio experience under your belt? Use Contemporary Craft’s studios to work on independent wood, metal, and mixed media craft projects. A variety of tools and equipment are available during the weekly sessions. Wednesdays, open until 7pm. Tuition: $90 for a group of four sessions, or $30 per session.

INTRO TO ENAMELING Saturday, September 8 10am-5pm Instructor: Jenny Butterfield Level: Beginner/Intermediate Experiment with the versatile and colorful process of enameling. Students will learn to fuse colored glass enamels on metal to create beautiful surface designs. Each student will produce a finished piece of jewelry in this workshop. CHAMPLEVÉ LAPEL PIN Saturday, October 20 10am-5pm Instructor: Zachery Lechtenberg Level: Beginner/Intermediate/ Advanced Champlevé is an enamel technique that fills indented areas on metal with colored enamel. During this workshop, students will prepare a 1” - 1.5” drawing on copper, and form a base for packing colored glass enamels. After torch firing, and grinding, students will come away with a unique champlevé lapel pin! Some metal work experience is helpful, but not required. TIN CAN COLLAGE Saturday, November 3 10am-5pm Instructor: Robert Villamagna Level: Beginner/Intermediate Take collage to a whole different level using repurposed metal or tin. Students will learn to cut, bend, and manipulate product containers to create original artworks. RIVETING & OTHER COLD CONNECTIONS Saturday, November 17 10am-5pm Instructor: Katie Rearick Level: Beginner/Intermediate Using cold connections in metal work provides affordable alternatives for joining metal without the use of soldering. Students will learn the basics and explore the possibilities of riveting and other cold connection techniques while creating a handmade pendant or a set of earrings. INTRO TO THE LATHE Saturday, January 12 1-5pm Instructor: Linda Van Gehuchten Level: Beginner/Intermediate Learn basic techniques for using the lathe! Process and safety issues will be addressed along with hands-on learning and discussion of tools and woodturning techniques. WOOD TURNED BOWLS Saturday, January 26 10am-5pm Instructor: Linda Van Gehuchten Level: Beginner/Intermediate Tackle the basics of the wood turned bowl and become acquainted with the woodshop, basic safety procedures, and operations of the lathe. CURLY MAPLE PLATTER Saturday, March 9 9am-5pm Instructor: David Dudney Level: Beginner/Intermediate Students will learn how to turn an eight inch curly maple platter. FROM FLAT TO FUNCTIONAL: TEXTURED SLAB-BUILT POTTERY Saturday, September 1 10am-5pm Instructor: Jen Allen Level: Beginner/Intermediate/ Advanced Students will create beautiful, textured ceramic wares with slab construction. Systems such as paper templates and bisque molds will be explored and flat slabs will be transformed into functional wares like cups, bowls, vases, and pitchers. CERAMIC MOLD-MAKING & SLIP CASTING Saturday & Sunday, September 29 & 30 10am-5pm Instructor: Brett Kern Level: Beginner/Intermediate In this workshop, participants will make two-part plaster molds that can be used for both sculptural works and functional pottery. Plaster mixing and pouring techniques will be highlighted, along with methods for formulating and mixing slipcasting clay bodies. WYCINANKI: PAPER CUT, POLISH FOLK ART Saturday, February 2 10am-1pm Instructor: Kathryn Carr Level: Beginner/Intermediate Wycinanki (vee-chee-non-kee) is a type of Polish paper cutting that uses layers of vivid colors to make a stunning style of folk art. In this class, students will learn basic paper cutting techniques to create this art form. COPTIC STITCH BINDING Sunday, April 14 10am-5pm Instructor: Anne Murray Level: Beginner/Intermediate Using coptic stitch techniques, students will create a hardback book cover made from decorative paper or book cloth. Coptic stitch is an exposed stitch binding that allows the book to open completely flat, making it ideal for art or journal writing. Alternatives for this binding may be covered upon request. ADJUSTABLE RINGS Friday, February 8 6-9pm Instructor: Lindsay Huff Level: Beginner Explore basic metalsmithing processes to fabricate sheet metal into adjustable rings. Basic rings can be personalized with stamped names and words, as well as a variety of textures and finishes. Class and workshop cancellations are decided three business days before start date. If a class must be canceled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded.
WORKSHOP INFORMATION • Students who register by mail or fax will receive a confirmation e-mail within seven days. • It is the responsibility of the student to appear in class on the correct day and time without additional notice. • Students’ photos may appear in CC’s promotional materials. • CC makes every effort to maintain the schedule of courses as announced in the catalog, however, CC reserves the right to cancel any course or to substitute faculty when necessary.
1-2 Day Workshops Student refund requests must be made at least three business days before a class begins. There will be a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without three business days notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks.
Visiting Artist Workshops Cancellations, 14 or more days notice: A student may cancel a registration for a 3, 4 or 5 day workshop up to two weeks prior to the start date of the class. There will be a $50 cancellation fee. Cancellations, fewer than 14 days notice: If a student cancels a registration within two weeks of the start date of a 3, 4 or 5 day workshop, there will be a 50% cancellation fee.
There will be no refund issued without three business days notice of a cancellation.
MATERIALS Instructors may request that students have certain supplies upon registration. Materials fees are built into the tuition unless otherwise stated.

ONE-ON-ONE & STUDIO RENTALS Private lessons in many media can be arranged upon request for students of all ages and skill levels. Private lessons are $50 per hour, with a two-hour minimum. In addition, independent studio use is available during open studio hours and by special arrangement.
