CONFERENCE SCHEDULE PRECONFERENCE A: TRADITIONAL, INVASIVE TO CONTEMPORARY, NONINVASIVE HEMODYNAMIC MONITORING

Hemodynamic assessment is a mainstay of physiologic monitoring in the emergency, acute, and critical care arenas. Common devices used to obtain hemodynamic pressures, cardiac output, and venous oxygen saturation, include arterial, central venous, and pulmonary artery catheters. This session reviews current evidencebased practice guidelines related to hemodynamic monitoring. Acquisition of valid data, waveform analysis, and appropriate interpretation of the data are imperative for optimal patient hemodynamic assessment. Traditionally hemodynamic monitoring utilized invasive methods such as the pulmonary artery catheter. Contemporary methods now include non-invasive and less invasive methods, which allow for hemodynamic assessment across various care areas where invasive monitoring may be limited.

This preconference will enable you to: uuDelineate best practices based on evidence for pressure monitoring. uuIdentify normal and abnormal pulmonary artery, central venous, and arterial waveforms. uuDiscuss cardiac output monitoring technologies such as pulmonary artery catheter, arterial pressure based and finger cuff. uuDescribe the measurement, interpretation and utilization of SvO2 and ScvO2.

PRECONFERENCE B: PHARMACOLOGY UPDATES: TOXIC INGESTIONS, DEADLY BLEEDING, AND THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC

Emergency Medicine and Critical Care practitioners commonly encounter emergencies related to toxic ingestions, anticoagulation-related bleeding, and opioids. This Pharmacology Updates pre-conference will review the most recent evidence, and provide pearls and pitfalls for management of patients with such emergencies.

This preconference will enable you to: uuDescribe new drugs of abuse and their clinical effects. uuWeigh-in on the risks and benefits of rapid reversal of anticoagulation in the ED or ICU. uuIdentify common drug-drug and drug-disease interactions with traditional nonopioid pain treatment modalities. uuIdentify evidence-based interventions that have shown to decrease mortality associated with opioid addiction.
