CONFERENCE SCHEDULES PRECONFERENCE: CARE OF THE DETERIORATING CHILD

Pediatric units outside of the ICU setting are continuing to see an increase in the acuity of the patients for whom they care. As a result, clinical situations may arise that require calling the Rapid Response Team, such as post-op pain management and complications, respiratory or neurologic deterioration, or the oncology patient who develops sepsis. After the crisis, the nursing staff may need to increase monitoring frequency, complete additional procedures and manage extra equipment without additional staff. This preconference will look at what types of emergent situations require additional resources, and the knowledge needed by the bedside nurse to provide the best possible care for rapidly deteriorating children.

THIS PRECONFERENCE WILL ENABLE YOU TO:

• Recognize changes in a patient’s clinical status that necessitate calling the Rapid Response Team. • Describe the pathophysiology underlying these conditions and initial management of symptoms until RRT arrives. • Discuss nursing priorities in caring for these acutely ill patients.
