In recent years our residents and patrons have demonstrated awe-inspiring citizenship, remarkable ingenuity, and tremendous resilience, and I continue to feel such gratitude to you all for doing what’s needed and showing us what community looks like. And as a reflection of this camaraderie and strength, many Collierville citizens are reconnecting with their favorite local retailers and celebrating a welcome return to the value and fun of in-person shopping. While online retail has its place in the markets, many residents are enjoying the opportunity to visit our locally owned shops, restaurants, and other small businesses for the pleasure of dining, browsing, and connecting in person once more. WHAT IS LEADERSHIP COLLIERVILLE? Leadership Collierville is almost 25 years old. It started as a local initiative by people who thought it was important to create a space where our adult and teen residents could network, develop, and grow as citizens. For eight months, you will learn more than you’ve ever known about the people and places in Collierville.

WHO CAN APPLY FOR LEADERSHIP COLLIERVILLE? We invite anyone who wants the opportunity to become a part of the fabric of this town. Leadership Collierville is unique in that way. A retiree, CEO, and stay-at-home mom are all in the same class. There’s no hierarchy in Leadership Collierville, either. Our motto is “one town, one goal and one vision.” Our youth program is limited to high school students, but the same open-door policy still applies there too.

HOW DOES LEADERSHIP COLLIERVILLE IMPACT ITS COMMUNITY OVER TIME? Each month, we meet at different venues to discuss topics like team building, government, education, public safety, and diversity. One day, we go to Southern Reins Center for Equine Therapy, a nonprofit organization that serves children and adults with disabilities. Another day, we interact with public officials from the local to the state level at the Town of Collierville. These are the experiences that help our people figure out who they are as leaders, so that when they go back to the office, they are more likely to make a difference in our community.

W H E T H E R Y O U A R E an overwhelmed parent or a young professional, Carrie literally spells out the best way to get organized. Borrowing an acronym from one of her favorite authors, Julie Morgenstern, Carrie tells her clients to follow SPACE when faced with clutter and chaos. Sort all your belongings into a few categories. The first step to sorting is to open your cabinets or the dusty storage bin in the corner and take everything out of its current home. If you organize within the contents of a drawer, then it is harder to take inventory of the excess floating around your space. No one needs more Tupperware lids than containers. This leads us to our next phase. Purge those personal items that no longer make sense by choosing to donate, sell, or throw them away. This is where professional organizers like The Space Defined come in. They are there to help you sift through the clutter and make tough decisions. Sometimes that means uncovering items you no longer want. Other times, it means reevaluating which items will add the most value to your limited space. Assign a home to what is left after the purge. When organizing your kitchen, for example, you want to make sure that your cutting boards are within an arm’s reach of where you typically prepare your meals. Intentionality in your space leads to long-term sustainability when it comes to staying organized. It is all about a system, and in this step, you start to see a light at the end of disorganized disfunction.

Containment is key at this point. The fourth step is for placing your items in their designated containers. Places like your local Container Store provide an array of storage options, shelving, and closet systems. When you rehome your items, you limit how much you can have, which prevents overbuying or overstretching your storage in the future. The “one in, one out” rule is also an easy one to follow when it comes to containment. Next time you buy something new, get rid of something else. Evaluate and maintain the systems you already put in place. Just like life, systems change with seasons, so do not be afraid to go in a different direction when the time comes. Always growing and changing, kids are the best examples of why it is important to reevaluate how you organize. T H E M E M P H I S S O U N D is a blend of so many cultures and generations. As the director of Live at the Garden, she knows this all too well. “Live at the Garden is nostalgic. Everyone loves being at a show when a song plays and they can remember every word and where they were when they first heard it,” Sherry reflects. It’s a Saturday morning, during the hours when Sherry is not at her day job. She drowns the room out with music and begins to pour paint. She is working on a purse inscribed “Country music will save us all.” She has a matching one that says “Rockand-roll will save us all.” Which one she wears depends on the day, or maybe the concert, but she believes them both whole-heartedly. Sherry is the product of her home, and when she stands on stage to introduce opening acts every weekend from mid-summer to early fall, it’s clear that she is a regional rock star. During the pandemic, when concerts were out of the question, Sherry fell into acrylic pouring as a way to tap into another side of herself outside of work. Eventually, with some trial and error, she transitioned from a blank canvas to hand-painted handbags. These are Sherry May Art’s bestsellers, and around football season, she cannot keep the clear ones on the shelf. Georgia, Arkansas, Memphis, and Ole Miss fans regularly sport their teams in true Sherry May fashion. “The weekends are for painting,” Sherry explains. Between managing sold-out shows and sometimes demanding artists, she seeks refuge in the fact that acrylic art has no rhyme or reason.

One heart. One mind. One mission. “Oftentimes, one piece can take a few weeks to come into fruition, and no two are ever the same either,” Sherry explains. “First, I have to come up with a direction, then I have to mix the paint and let it sit for a day or so. Once I know the air bubbles are out, I begin to pour and pray everything comes out right. And from there, I wait for the paint to cure, then top it off with a crystal-like resin.” The paint flows into composition like a well-written song, creating something even she did not know was possible. Really, artists and musicians are alike in that way. Along with handbags, Sherry also makes custom coasters and original canvases. One of her designs is affectionately named “Pink Groove” as a salute to her Motown music influences. Southern Muse, a Collierville-based boutique, stocked Sherry May Art first. Now, other markets are following from places like Nashville and Naples, Florida. She is on tour in a sense, but this time, it’s with handbags and paintings. Picking up a paintbrush, Sherry May shows us it’s never too late to find your rhythm, even if it looks like abstract art.

Most often guests are in Collierville visiting family and friends or they are leisure travelers to Memphis who were told to check out Collierville’s picturesque Town Square. The Town of Collierville invests in special events and placemaking projects, such as banners and historical signage, to help create a visitor experience that is reflective of Collierville’s brand and values.

The focus on all the elements that make up a tourism destination is called destination management. That is the foundation of Collierville’s tourism program, which strives to enhance the quality of life for its residents, and in turn, the quality of visit for its guests. Collierville’s Independence Day Celebration is a signature community event that draws an estimated 20,000 people to H.W. Cox Park to watch the largest fireworks demonstration in the Mid-South. The planning for this event includes decisions on staff apparel, quality of vendors, appearance of trash cans, and consideration of the experience an attendee will have getting to the event and leaving. Staff devotes extensive time to the planning of this event and others, like Christmas in Collierville and the Youth Fishing Rodeo, because of their potential to shape the reputation of the community and perception of visitors. These events are not only fun to attend, but they also contribute to the feeling of community and “small-town” charm that Collierville is known for. In addition to the more than 30 town-sponsored events each year, over 35,000 people attend nearly two dozen events hosted by community organizations. Perhaps the most important and well-loved of these events are Main Street Collierville’s annual Concert Series on Town Square, a 22-year-old custom that draws more than 5,000 people to six concerts each season. Main Street Collierville is a nonprofit organization that focuses on the preservation and vitality of Collierville’s historic district. Their concerts draw in visitors from across the Mid-South, recalling a tradition of more than 150 years of music on the Square. Music helps to make Town Square Park the heart of its community. The original two-story bandstand that stood in Town Square Park (1876-1955) is said to have hosted W.C. Handy’s Memphis Blues and sounds still drift from today’s gazebo each summer. Drop by the park on Friday evenings, April through October, and experience Collierville’s Bluegrass Jam. For over 20 years, musicians from West Tennessee and North Mississippi have come together to experience the transformative power of live bluegrass, blues, and folk music.

Town employees are not the only people working to protect and promote tourism in Collierville. Since 2020, Collierville residents have gone all out to decorate their homes and businesses for the Collierville Holiday Light Tour. Created by the Town Beautiful Commission, the Light Tour features a Google map that residents and guests use to take a self-guided tour of holiday lights around Collierville. Each December, the tour features over 100 locations around Collierville on a map that is viewed more than 70,000 times. The Light Tour is now a holiday tradition that residents look forward to every year. Neighbors come together in an attempt to outshine the previous year’s displays. Their actions build community, make Collierville a great place to be during the holidays, and entice visitors from the greater Memphis area to grab dinner and take in the lights.

The athlete responds to the sturdy wall screen and swiftly aims his passes at brightly colored targets. He’ll see his results in minutes, pushing him to improve as a new session begins immediately. John, a homeschooled student, works on his outside shot, as the high-tech Noah computer system tracks the arc, depth, and placement of his shots in real time, displaying his results on a large video screen. Occasionally, a coach gives an encouraging word. Shoot360 is owned by Preston Butts, Steven McCulley, and NBA player Thaddeus Young. They opened their more than 19,000-square-foot, $1.5 million facility on December 18, 2021, and they’ve already seen their membership grow rapidly. The three know they have something special to offer and look forward to packing their space with players ages 7 and up, both male and female. While a majority of their members reflect junior high and high school athletes, Shoot360 is no stranger to the topmost level. “We even have some pros who use our facility,” Butts notes. There is a range of basketball skills being addressed this afternoon: “We provide our members the opportunity to work on their passing, ball handling and shooting skills.” As Butts demonstrates the immediate feedback of the

Noah system, he adds, “When you can see results in real time and make adjustments, you can learn so much.” Shoot360’s creator, Craig Moody, tapped into something powerful as he brought the virtual video world, so attractive to young people, into the world of basketball. He knew it would be a strong combination of immersive learning. As Preston Butts watches the activity at Shoot360 this day, he knows he has something to offer. He can see athletes improving. Knowledge and prevention are the best ways to keep an injury from ruining your summer fun. Here are the most common sports-related injuries and Peak Potential Physiotherapy’s tips to prevent them.

2. TENNIS OR GOLFER’S ELBOW

Both tennis and golf require grip strength and exaggerated movements of the wrist and elbow. Subsequently, pain can occur where the tendons of the forearm muscles attach to the bony bumps on your elbow. These are repetitive-use injuries with local pain and tenderness, weakness, and possible tingling into the fingers. The taping technique may be used to reduce the load on the tendons, while stretching the forearm muscles is the best prevention.

For runners and cyclists, this is a common complaint as they increase their mileage. There is no incident or trauma, but pain comes on gradually over time. Symptoms include a burning or pain on the outside of the thigh or knee. Stretching and strengthening are an important part of prevention, especially the core and buttocks. More serious pain can be avoided by having a physical therapist check your body’s alignment at the first sign of knee discomfort.

The uneven terrain we encounter on the beach or hiking trail can lead to ankle sprains. It occurs when we land awkwardly or twist the ankle causing pain, stiffness, and swelling. Improving ankle strength and overall balance will make these accidents less likely to occur. Immediate treatment can include ice and compression to decrease inflammation.

4. SHIN SPLINTS Shin splints gradually cause pain on the inside of the shin bone. This discomfort usually gets worse with running or walking on hard surfaces. It most often occurs when athletes progress too quickly or abruptly change their workouts. Prevention requires both stretching and strengthening areas above and below the shin (foot, ankle, knee, and thigh muscles) to give support to the lower leg. Crosstraining on a bicycle or rowing machine can give these muscles a chance to rest.

5. PLANTAR FASCIITIS Inflammation and pain across the bottom of the foot are common symptoms of plantar fasciitis. It is usually most severe with your first few steps in the morning and decreases as you get moving. The pain returns during long periods of standing or after prolonged sitting.

Stretching, strengthening, physical therapy, and foot orthotics are the best preventions and treatments. If the problem persists, it is important to evaluate if the pain is actually coming from the hip or back, which is common. It welcomes you to a beautiful facility and a new vision of canine boarding and daycare that reflects a lifetime of inspiration, years of planning and construction, and the memory of one very important little dog. “Happi was the best of the best,” owners Faye and Mark Hesla remember of their beloved Sheltie. While we all have similar feelings about our pets, the love of their late Happi radiates on their faces and throughout the building as they speak of him. “Happi’s presence is felt throughout the space here,” Faye offers, while a nearby portrait of Happi smiles down on staff and visitors. Through the years, Mark and Faye have traveled extensively, both for work and fun. But leaving town came with a downside. “We hated leaving Happi behind, and

often, we would arrange our schedules so that one of us stayed with him if possible. We missed many a trip.” Mark continues matter-of-factly, “We want no dog left alone.” At Happi & Friends, someone is in the building at all hours. It’s a personal commitment that the couple makes to the families that trust their dogs to the care of these professionals. Faye recalls one evening, very late, when she discovered Mark had not made it home. Worried, she went back to the facility to find him in one of the many canine rooms, lying on the floor, keeping one of their lonelier visitors company. Approaching only their second year in business, the Heslas envision music concerts, adoption days, and play days for dogs and families. No doubt, it’s what Happi would have wanted.

office for a photography studio, where she took portraits of residents from every corner of her part of the south.” These pictures still hang on the wall today as a salute to Bessie’s life and legacy. Founded in 2008 by Walt and Kelli Geminn, Square Beans is an independent coffee shop known for its charming location and warm environment. As a Collierville native, who lives within walking distance of Square Beans, Katie has been a frequent customer for countless years. Last summer, she approached Walt and Kelli with her idea of buying Square Beans. They were receptive to her offer and Katie closed on the purchase in December of 2021. “I’m so impressed with what the Geminns accomplished over the years and some of the setbacks they overcame,” Katie reflects. “I want to continue to build on that success and ensure that Square Beans remains a vital part of the community for decades to come.” In fact, aspiring to create something truly special and central to the historic district is a recurring theme in Katie’s career. Before Square Beans, she opened Stratton House, a Colonial Revival home turned into a highly successful bed-and-breakfast and event venue. On weekends, wedding parties, caterers, and local bands flooded the lawn. After the pandemic forced their family to switch directions, the Parrs moved into the Stratton

House, which was built by another set of her husband’s great-great-great-grandparents before the Civil War. Everything has come full circle now that they are living and working on foundations set for them long ago.

CONTINUING THE COFFEE CONVERSATION Almost every customer knows Katie and the baristas by name. After saying hello, they place their usual orders at the front and find their favorite table. Remote workers, families, and neighbors all gather under one roof, catching up on their to-do lists or each other. For Katie, coffee shops coincide with good conversation, and she aims to carry the conversation at Square Beans outside. Now that she has the keys, Katie is dreaming of adding a patio outback, so customers can enjoy their drink of choice in the open air. In true small-town fashion, she is also continuing to carry products from local merchants like Wolf River Honey, Dave’s Bagels, Shotwell Candy, and Turtle Shell Pottery. “We are even serving beans from J Brooks Coffee, a Memphis-based roaster,” Katie says proudly. “My go-to treat is one of our lattes and a jalapeño-cheddar Dave’s Bagel with cream cheese.” Along with espresso, Sweet Magnolia Gelato is another Square Beans staple, brought in from Clarksdale, Mississippi. “Every gelato and sorbet they make is delicious,” Katie says. Southern summers are sure to be that much sweeter in Collierville with Katie in charge. This is the beauty of a small business. It is created and operated by locals who have other locals in mind.

A S O W N E R T I M G A I N E S puts it, “It’s about the quality of our food. We use the very best ingredients in our pizzas. We buy our vegetables daily and select only the very best meats. Oh, and we don’t use fillers.” And where better to see and smell the quality of the food than in the kitchen. As Connor Vlasak tosses a pizza in the air in the time-honored tradition, others hustle to prepare ingredients for the upcoming lunch crowd, and Gaines pulls a “Lucille” from the oven. The Lucille pizza, named after the famous guitar of the Indianola-born blues icon, B.B. King, provides an example of the down-home inspired menu. It features grilled chicken, roasted garlic, and fresh tomatoes with a ranch drizzle. Other cool and quirky names entice the hungry customer with the Happy Hippie (hold the meat, please), the Pit Boss (barbecue), Hector’s Taco Pie (base of salsa), the Popeye (you guessed it — plenty of spinach), and the Hot Chick (think buffalo wings sauce), among others. Sandwiches include the meatball-laden Mee-maw and the Papaw (we did say Southerninspired, remember), the Yardbird, the Mr. G, and the Delta Melt. Like the two founders of Lost Pizza, both from Indianola, Mississippi, Gaines grew up in the Delta. Lost Pizza has restaurants throughout the South, and Gaines owns both the Collierville and the Southaven locations. While the food takes precedent over the décor, the funky environment is important, and Gaines knows it: “Décor is a big part of what we are, and our customers see the difference immediately.” A magnificent print of B.B. King resides above one booth space at the front of the restaurant, while signage warns people away from the “attack chef” behind one swinging door and advertises Homemade Delta Tamales with a sign over the front counter. An old CocaCola sign hangs in the main dining area and vintage 45 records crowd a nearby wall. A VW car hood has been decorated and installed toward the back of the restaurant. On and on, but never tiresome and always cool. Gaines laughs, “I go back home to the Delta occasionally and find stuff.” From the homegrown food inspired by his ancestors to the décor that reflects his own deep Delta childhood, Lost Pizza’s Tim Gaines is bound and determined to share all kinds of flavor with Collierville: “We want to make a visit to Lost Pizza fun and memorable.”
