Dear Fellow Germantown Neighbors, We are pleased to present go! Germantown, a new City of Germantown publication delivered directly to your home three times a year. Many of you are familiar with the city’s seasonal events publication, FYI. Just as our city is growing with new developments, homes, and retail and restaurant offerings, the need to tell the story of the city and its residents has grown, too. The magazine includes everything you loved about, FYI but expands our ability to talk about the things that make Germantown special — the things that make it home. Stories about the interesting people who live in our many tree-lined neighborhoods. Stories about the many existing businesses and those coming to Germantown, growing our economy and providing exciting places to shop, dine and play. Stories about the many wellkept parks close to our vital neighborhoods and the activities neighbors enjoy together. As spring gets fully underway, with flowers blooming and bees buzzing, your award-winning Parks and Recreation department is gearing up for a busy summer of activities. New restaurants and retail are preparing to open their doors. Germantown and Houston high schools are set to graduate hundreds of seniors, among the best in the Mid-South. It all combines to give Germantown a special quality of life that you’ve come to expect — and that your elected officials and city staff strive to deliver. I think you will find some new reasons to love Germantown in these pages. Whether planning a date night for a special celebration, or planning ahead for summer activities, go! Germantown is a great place to find ideas so that you can write your own story. Comments, suggestions, content ideas, photos to share? The city’s communications team would love to hear from you. Going Out? Spend Your Date Night in Germantown BY JANE SCHNEIDER

L

iving in Germantown, you might feel like a night on the town requires driving to downtown or Midtown Memphis. But as many young families are discovering, there are some pretty cool things going on in Germantown that are a perfect fit for your date night. Here’s what one couple recently discovered. Angie and Matt Keathley are professionals in their early 40s and love being active. They live in the Dogwood Village neighborhood of Germantown where a relaxed evening means walking to Huey’s for a tasty burger and strolling back home.

But when the couple wants to celebrate a special anniversary or treat themselves to a fine dining experience, they head to Southern Social (2285 South Germantown Road). This new, upscale eatery is owned by Russ Graham, and Tom and Lauren Powers, the group behind the popular restaurant Flight in downtown Memphis. Both Tom and Lauren attended high school here, and Lauren’s great aunt worked for the railroad station adjacent to the restaurant, says Ashley De Kok, the restaurant’s office manager. he group was looking to expand to Germantown, so when this building became available it was previously lfo’s it was a perfect fit.

“ W hether it’ s a q u iet d ate night or to c el eb rate a spec ial oc c asion, it has wond erf u l f ood and a f ab u l ou s atm osphere. ”

“We love the atmosphere,” says Angie Keathley, who has dined at Southern Social on several occasions. “Whether it’s a quiet date night or to celebrate a special occasion, it has wonderful food and a fabulous atmosphere.” The decor, burnished wood and lushly upholstered leather furnishings, has the feel of a lodge or upscale inn. Look at some of the photos that line the wall and you’ll find pictures that reflect Germantown’s early history, including one of a dry goods store that was once housed here. Since Southern Social opened in November 2016, it’s created quite a buzz. Popular menu items like Aunt Thelma’s Fried Chicken, served with a decadent baked macaroni and cheese, Seared Sea Scallops with wild mushroom risotto, and a creamy Shrimp and Grits featuring delicate Gulf Coast shrimp, makes your dining experience memorable. You can even enjoy your meal al fresco on their newly opened patio. Anthony Fields, the culinary director for Southern Social and Flight, spent several months testing and tweaking the menu before the restaurant opened, “so we could be confident about exactly what we wanted to offer. ike Flight, Southern Social offers an extensive wine menu with flights of wine available to be paired with your meal. The wine bar is also open after hours (until 1 a.m.

Friday and Saturday nights), making it a perfect place to end your evening with a nightcap. Fields says the dessert menu even received a facelift for spring, adding specialities like amaretto cheesecake and a Brandy Alexander milkshake. The restaurant also serves brunch each Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Discover new places to shop To walk off your meal or discover a new retailer, head to The Shops of Saddle Creek. The southwest section of this popular retail destination recently underwent a beautiful, 40,000 square foot renovation and expansion, adding an Apple store, Sephora, and clothiers like Michael history happening now

Kors and Kendra Scott. Stores are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5:30 p.m. on Sundays. Local clothiers are also flourishing in Germantown. Beautiful Soul Boutique (3133 Forest Hill Irene), owned by Brooke Kellenberger, specializes in trendy, affordable threads. ou’ll find goodies here to make any fashionista swoon. Their collection includes flowing tunics, sassy dresses, clever tops and leggings. They even offer Tees and dresses for young girls. I was able to find a great date night outfit that was both comfortable and in style says Keathley. With additional retail and restaurant options coming soon at Thornwood and on Forest Hill Irene, “I’m excited about the new shops coming to our city says eathley. or Germantown to have the area’s only Apple store? That’s really cool. Get cultured Finally, your date night isn’t complete without enjoying the exciting cultural arts programming available through the Germantown Performing Arts Center (GPAC, 1801 Exeter Road). Each year, GPAC puts together a diverse line-up of live performances that run the gamut — from acoustic rock groups featuring jams by Southern Soul Assembly with Luther Dickson, or Rhiannon Giddens, to 1 4

international groups like Cubanisimo and Tao Drum Art. Always popular is the jazz series Jazz in the Box, making GPAC one of the only venues in the area to feature jazz on an ongoing basis. What’s more, your entertainment isn’t limited to an evening out. Have a preschooler at home? Spend a Saturday morning introducing your young children to the magical world of musical instruments and musical styles by attending the popular PB&J series. GPAC’s celebrated music education program enters its 20th season this year. Sessions take place on scheduled Saturdays at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. in the GPAC Black Box Theater. Or you can check out GPAC’s Food Truck and Music Fest, which features live music and yummy eats from the area’s favorite food truck vendors. The next fest takes place Sunday, June 11, at 3 p.m. Keathley, who works as the assistant to GPAC’s executive director Paul Chandler, says the organization is also currently planning an outdoor venue that would accommodate concerts under the stars. Subscriptions are on sale now for the 2017-2018 season, so don’t miss out. In case you haven’t noticed, Germantown is growing and has lots to offer — on date night or any night. Just get out there. •

eighborhoods provide refuge, a place to come home to at the end of the day and unwind. They can be places of solitude and also provide a way of connecting with friends and neighbors. When traditions arise that make connecting with others possible, good things can result. When Bob and Marsha Seahorn moved to Poplar Estates in 2003, they felt as though they were coming home. Both had grown up in Germantown, but eventually moved away to attend college. Once they got married and started a family, they knew Germantown was where they wanted to

put down roots. Marsha also wanted to get to know her neighbors and that’s how the Independence Day parade came about. The Poplar Estates’ July 4th parade was the brainchild of Seahorn and neighbor Sally Peters. The two women were busy raising young children, “And we both thought Poplar Estates needed a July 4th parade!” she says. They contacted the Germantown Fire Department and spread the word through the neighborhood association newsletter. When July 4th arrived, a host of families arrived at Tuscany Way with kids riding star-spangled history happening now

Finding the

Artist Within How painter Joyce Petrina discovered her talent BY JANE SCHNEIDER

N

eighborhoods are like patchwork quilts, each house and family a tiny square of color which together creates a rich palette of hues and patterns. From a distance, you might not be able to see those patterns, but look closely and you’ll discover the many colorful, interesting people who make up this community. One such person is artist Joyce Petrina, a longtime Germantown resident who is a sculptor and painter. Pay a visit to her home and you’ll see her work gracing the seashell pink walls of her living and dining room. Through art, she says, “I have found a means to express my joys and concerns in a way that has enhanced every aspect of my daily life. I am so at peace working with my hands, creating three-dimensional expressions of thoughts, memories and concerns that occupy my mind.” Coming home Joyce Petrina was born in Nassau, Bahamas, to a family with roots that stretch back to the island’s colonial settlement. She met her husband Jim while flying as a stewardess with International Air Bahama and residing in Luxembourg. During their marriage, the couple moved frequently before

Jim’s job with DuPont brought them to Germantown. It was while she was at home caring for her two young sons, Anthony and Michael, that Petrina began to recognize a desire to develop her voice as an artist. She had never studied art before, but during a visit to a gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Petrina found herself drawn to a striking piece of sculpture. Noticing her interest, the gallery owner encouraged her to touch the bronze, an act that proved life-changing. “Even now, I can close my eyes and remember how the bronze warmed to my touch as it gave off steady hum of energy that intrigued me,” she writes in her artist’s bio. “The question that came to my mind then and still does now, is: What was the artist thinking of as he formed this incredible piece? Somehow, he had managed to transfer some of that energy into his creation. I would like to think that I imbue my work with energy.” Since she had no formal art training, Petrina found a continuing education class at the University of Memphis on Friday nights, where she learned about sculpture and the work of artists Henry Moore and Auguste Rodin. Each morning, she would spread her materials out on the kitchen table and explore history happening now

her ideas in clay, then clean up the day’s progress before picking her boys up from school. I was totally clueless when I first started. It was frustrating, because I would want to do things and didn’t have the skill set to do it,” she says. “So I just learned.” Eventually, she moved her studio to the patio room at the back of the house, one with gracious views of her garden and swimming pool. The blue water reminded her of home and provided the inspiration she needed. She eventually began to paint as well, often moving her easel out to the patio to paint al fresco, creating large, abstract canvases bright with color. As her body of work grew, so did opportunities to show. She even won several awards, including the Purchase Award at the 2000 Mulberry Festival in Collierville for a bronze she created for the city. Bringing art to children But Petrina’s love of art isn’t solely tied to creating her own work. For seven years, she taught art classes to teenagers at St. Jude Children’s Hospital. 2 4

The prospect of facing children and families managing grave illness intimidated her at first. ut as she became involved volunteering at the hospital, she found working with the children rewarding. One young girl’s painting was even transferred onto scarves that were sold in the hospital gift shop. Joyce and Jim have lived in their neighborhood since 1991, and forged strong bonds with those around them through activities like a neighborhood gardening club. “I know the trees in my yard by the names of the friends who gave them to me,” says Petrina with a smile. “I have friends from Brazil, Bulgaria, the Bahamas, a real mix — and all live in Germantown.” As older neighbors have moved on, young couples have purchased the homes and put their loving touches on yards that are welltended and homes pristine. This summer, Jim will retire after 40 years with DuPont and the couple plans to celebrate with a trip to the Bahamas. Then they anticipate relaxing into retirement, staying right where they are in Germantown — for it is home.

Who Has Vein Disease?

Answer: ALL OF THEM HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE A VEIN PROBLEM IN MY LEGS? IS IT ONLY IF I HAVE BIG VARICOSE VEINS? Most vein problems are related to a medical condition called venous insufficiency. Very few people who suffer from venous insufficiency actually have the knobby, twisty-varicose veins on the surface of their legs that tend to be a cause of personal dissatisfaction with their appearance. Most people with venous insufficiency don't develop varicose veins. Instead, most people have legs that get tired especially after a long day, or their legs become swollen, achy, painful, or develop a bronze color at the ankles and calves. Night time leg cramps, charley horses, and restless legs that keep them awake at night are very frequent complaints. Many people think their night cramps are due to low potassium or dehydration when in reality this is commonly due to venous insufficiency.

I SEE A LOT OF ADVERTISING IN MEMPHIS AND WEBSITES ABOUT VEIN TREATMENT… HOW DO I CHOOSE WHOM I SHOULD GO TO? There certainly seem to be many choices and it can be very difficult to tell one website from the next or one ad

from another. Several things may help you with your choice. First, make sure to ask if the physician will be performing the entire procedure himself (in some offices a nurse, or even someone without any credentials, rather than a doctor does a significant portion, if not the entire procedure.) Second, make sure you go to a physician with specialized vascular training. Many physicians performing vein procedures have little to no formal training about veins, and yet claim to be “vein experts.” Find out: Are they board certified specifically in vascular procedures? Where did they perform their vein training? Ideally, you should go to a physician who has vast expertise not only in veins but also in arteries as sometimes circulation issues are causing the leg symptoms and need to be addressed first. An interventional cardiologist who has specific expertise in vein and leg artery procedures is an excellent choice. Unfortunately, all too frequently, I see patients who have had previous procedures with a self-proclaimed vein expert with little training because they liked their ad or website. Proper vein care then becomes much more complex after having undergone such previous procedures. In the proper hands, vein treatment can be a very simple procedure but it still is a surgical procedure, that requires true expertise to diagnose and treat properly.

Our practice offers relaxing, light IV sedation. This medication makes a world of difference to the experience. The procedure takes just a few minutes and the patient is walking immediately after treatment.
