CONNECT WITH US Ah, the joy of summer. I hope this season finds you enjoying more relaxing times, and slowing down the frenetic pace that family life tends to travel during the school year. Summer is my favorite time to dream and travel and garden, among other things. It’s grown more relaxed, now that my son is living in his own apartment. Would you believe he’s approaching his last year of college? That reality doesn’t seem possible. Those milestones simply fly by. I remember when Ev was just becoming a teenager. He would often lay on his bed in his bedroom, daydreaming of future adventures and destinations that would be his alone. His boyish face had begun to loose the fullness of youth that summer, his jaw line becoming more defined and angular. In the spring of that year, when he had just turned 14, his voice also began to break. Periodically, he would answer his phone (yes, we’d actually talk sometimes instead of texting!) and out would come this resonant sound so deep and rich that I’d have to pull the phone away from my face to make sure I had dialed the right number. (If you haven’t had that happen yet with your teenage boy, trust me, it will.) In the background of those days, I can remember hearing the jumpy, jangly music that often wafted from his bedroom: hiphop, rap, jazz on occasion, even soundtracks from popular films he liked, like Wall-E and

Slumdog Millionaire. Once upon a time when he was young, we listened to storytelling tales about Paul Bunyon and Finn McCool and sang silly songs from Sesame Street and Blues Clues. Now, it was the throbbing rhythms of Three Doors Down or the metronomic thump of his drum kit as he practiced. Why drums? “Because sometimes I have to hit something,” he told me once. All those hormones no doubt. I didn’t mind. I didn’t mind any of it, really (okay, the surliness from the hormones I minded). But the music and his evolving views on the world filled our home with life and engaging topics we could discuss over the dinner table. Of course, finding those points of connection as the teen years continued became more and more challenging. He didn’t want to engage as often, and as he became more selfsufficient, my ability to help him out was needed less and less. I wanted that independence for him, as all parents do, yet there was still so much I wanted to share. The challenge for me was to meet him where he was and hope we could find those mutual points of connectivity. As it turns out, that’s often the case for my job here, as the editor of this magazine. Each month, I work with a talented group of freelance writers to information on subjects we hope you’ll find of interest, ideas that will connect with your world.

The challenge is making sure we meet you where you are, both with news and information that’s relevant to your life and the way in which we deliver that news. To that end, I hope you’ll find our 2016 Family Survival Guide a useful directory to have on hand throughout the year. The listings you’ll find are geared to helping your family live a fuller, happier life in Memphis. Whether it’s going out to enjoy a museum’s free day, finding a sports team for your soccer player, or knowing what agencies you can turn to in times of need, you’ll find those resources and much more inside these pages. Starting this month, you’ll also find Memphis Parent at your favorite Kroger store, as we are now available at all 35 Kroger groceries in Shelby County and north Mississippi. By the way, we’re also carried at more than 480 outlets across the city, including pediatric offices, public and private schools, hospitals, day care centers, the public library systems, and retail stores in Germantown, Collierville, and Bartlett. Find the nearest pickup point in your neighborhood by visiting us online, we’re available 24/7 at memphisparent.com. Rely on our calendar of daily events to keep you engaged, then join in the conversation on Facebook, Twitter, and Pintrest. Let us know what’s going on in your world. We want to connect with you.

There are a host of schools available to families in Shelby County. From public to private, charter to magnet, even the communities in our surrounding suburbs run municipal school districts. It may take time, but with a little research, you’ll find the school that fits your family’s needs. Read about those options here, then go online to the Memphis School Guide (memphisschoolguide.org), a website developed to help parents more closely examine the school landscape. There you’ll find a link under each section with additional school profiles and data. Editor’s Note: Copy written by Ginger Spickler, founder, Memphis School Guide.

Out east, your family can learn about Tennessee’s pioneer days at Hillwood: Davies Manor Plantation, Shelby County’s oldest log home. Here you’ll discover what life was like in the mid-1800s. Tour the house, outbuildings, and plantation grounds. ($5/adults, $3/children.) Open Tuesday-Friday, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sustainable living is celebrated at Bobby Lanier Farm Park (2700 Cross Country, north of entrance to Germantown Elementary School), a contemporary take on farm life with its community garden, chickens, and rabbits. During the summer months, a Farmers Market takes place each Thursday from 4 to 7:30 p.m. with live music and food trucks. Finally, kids can get wet at the spray park at Suggs Park in Collierville. While you’re there, bring a lawn chair and enjoy the live music and food at Sunset on the Square Summer Concert Series at the historic Town Square in Collierville; every Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. through the end of July.

FRIDAY

Speaking of free music, Midtown boasts the newly renovated Levitt Shell at Overton Park, with its amazing light show. Free concerts are held here on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings June 2-July 21 and September 3-October 24. Go to levittshell.org to view the performance schedule.

SATURDAY

Drop in to the Memphis Railroad and Trolley Museum at Central Station, which tells the history of Memphis’ railroad lines with cool memorabilia and model trains kids will love. ($3/adults, $1/ages 4-12.) Hours: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, noon-5 p.m. Sunday. From there, you’re not far from exploring the beauty of Elmwood Cemetery, an early Victorian-era park that holds bountiful history in its monuments and gravestones. It’s free to walk the grounds, or check out some of the guided tours available, some lead by docents in costume. Another fun Saturday destination is cooling off at the garden-themed H2O Splash Park at the Children’s Museum of Memphis. (Free to members, $15/nonmembers.) For a free spray park, check out Peabody Park (just north of Cooper and Central). With geysers, a spray pad, and fountains, it is ideal for young children.

SUNDAY

Celebrate pedal power by taking a family bike ride on the Greenline, a flat, 12-mile paved urban trail that connects Midtown with Shelby Farms Park. There are a host of access points, and even a few yummy places for noshing in the High Point Terrace neighborhood. Or try the Wolf River Nature Trail path (access at Humphreys and Walnut Grove), which is hilly and largely shaded. Make a point to land at Shelby Farms, where kids love the creative Woodland Discovery Playground and its cool slides, swings, and climbing structures. The newly refurbished Patriot Lake is scheduled to open later in July, and boating is available on Pine Lake. Finally, cap off your week by cheering on the Memphis Redbirds. Lawn seating is $9 per person. Don’t miss the Boardwalk games; kids even get to run the bases at Sunday evening games. Upcoming dates are July 10 & 24 and August 14 & 28.
