ne of the things I most enjoy about Facebook is scrolling through the milestones of friends’ lives each morning. There are marriages and engagements, graduations and holiday celebrations, birthdays and new homes. Recently, several couples I know became parents for the first time. And so joining the parade was the mad array of new baby pictures featuring the proud parents showing off baby’s firsts. You know: First smile, first giggle, first words, first steps. Having a baby represents a rebirth of sorts for us too, as we accept the invitation to experience the world anew. It’s also interesting to notice the discoveries parents make as their world expands from two to three. It’s a big adjustment, learning to manage a little one so reliant on you. Babies need your attention 24/7. And they require us to be prepared for all the unpredicatable problems that can arise. It’s thrilling and draining, all at once. In order to be prepared for the unpredicatable, babies require planning — lots and lots of planning. You quickly realize that the run to Kroger you used to make for groceries isn’t quite so easy any more, right? You’ve got to make sure your diaper bag is fully stocked and that you’ve got something for baby to nosh on or a wrap for yourself, should you need to feed on location. And before you leave the house, you’ve got to make sure baby has napped, eaten, pooped, and had tummy time, or that sweet little thing will produce the biggest mess you’ve ever seen. Trust me, it happens. When it did, I was with “that” girlfriend (you know, the one who is always prepared for potential calamity) and thank god for it. I’d taken my son on an afternoon play date and had failed to pack an extra set of clothes. Naturally, word got back to my son. He saw his opening and made a run for it, releasing the biggest, messiest bomb a child of 30 pounds could muster. It was quite impressive, really. Needless to say, the few extra diapers and wipes I had brought were quickly depleted trying to clean up the mess that had managed to creep up both his front and his back. As I could have predicted, my girlfriend was at the ready with an extra set of clothes she was kind enough to share with my now cleaned up kid. I ushered up a prayer of thanks that her son had turned his nose up at participating in the bomb drop. Lord only knows why. I guess he’d pooped the proper number of times at home, thus preventing any surprises in the field. How this happened I I’ll never know because predicting a child’s behavior is simply crazy talk. But I can promise you, I never left the house again without an extra set of clothes. I think that’s what becoming a parent does for you; it forces you to think beyond your own needs and to consider someone else’s welfare, too. Much of parenting is a lesson in risk management, anticipating what could happen in a situation and responding accordingly. That’s why you baby-proof your home, to make sure ,when your adventurous toddler is finally walking, that he doesn’t pick up a fork and insert it into your bedroom outlet. Planning ahead and gathering the resources that help your family reach their goals is a task we do every day. Whether it is going shopping for groceries or to Target for yoga pants, you’ll want to pick up our magazine along the way to help you plan each month. hile watching a Redbirds game has been a popular pastime for many families in Memphis, Craig Unger is hoping to foster a new generation of fans. Unger is passionate about baseball and AutoZone Park, where he’s worked for the past year as the general manager. The St. Louis Cardinals purchased the Class AAA affiliate Memphis Redbirds in March 2014 and inked a long-term lease with the city of Memphis to run AutoZone Park. The franchise is determined to gin up excitement once again for the city’s minor league ball club and Unger is leading the charge. A native of Waterloo, Illinois, Craig Unger and his wife, Pam, have never been far from the action in St. Louis. Unger’s interest in journalism and marketing took them to the Gateway City after college, where Craig excelled as a news broadcaster, eventually rising from the announcer’s booth to the general manager’s office. Later, when the Cardinals purchased the station, Unger’s career shifted to corporate sales and marketing for the ball club. Several years later, he was moved to Memphis to start a new chapter in his career. It’s Memphis’ proximity to St. Louis that made this purchase so desirable. If a Cardinal player gets injured in the morning, a Redbirds player can step into the dugout at Busch Stadium by late afternoon. “The role of the minor league is to help prepare players for the big leagues and Memphis has long played a role in developing players for the Cardinals and other teams,” says Unger, noting only 5 percent of ballplayers will actually go on to have a major league career. “People know players names when they get to St. Louis. It’s harder to make them household names now.”

SETTLING IN

And yet, at age 37, this father of three is in an enviable position. AutoZone Park was ranked as one of the top minor league ballparks in the country by Baseball America, second only to Charlotte’s BB&T Ballpark, which opened last year. Since he heads a small organization (just 25 full-time employees), Unger is very hands-on.

He oversaw the club’s $6.5 million renovation, pulling 3,000 seats from the stadium (it now seats closer to 10,000 fans), re-sodding the ball field (the grass was original), and eliminating 18 of 45 suites to create office space and two indoor club rooms where fans can enjoy the game in air-conditioned comfort while sharing a beer. A year into the job, Unger is familiar with the issues faced by his staff. When they’re slammed, it’s not unusual for him to lend a hand, whether it’s taking tickets or spinning cotton candy. What he doesn’t know much about is the team itself. “If something happens, I’m often the last person to find out.” So if the girls want to see their dad during baseball season (midApril to September), it often means going to the park. “We come down and try to steal a few moments with him,” says Pam. “Sometimes we’ll come and watch the guys practice.”

FINDING BALANCE

So what makes their marriage work? Striving for balance, along with a clear division of labor. Craig’s exactness and attention to detail makes him well-suited to hustling the girls out the door to school in the morning. Pam is more relaxed, willing to go-with-the flow but also structured. “Everyone thrives with routine and organization, it keeps the chaos down to a minimum.” When they head to the park, Emma (11) enjoys planning their meals, Ellen (9) likes learning the mechanics of the game, and Eden (5) dashes out to play the carnival games on the boardwalk. While the bluff is no longer open, grassy areas at left and right field provide a similar experience by putting you closer to the game (just watch out for foul balls). Unger says many of the changes the club has made have been with the fan experience in mind. “We’re a little Disney World here, people come to escape for nine innings. We spend a lot of time looking at that — from the minute fans walk through the gates until they leave because we have to meet their expectations,” he says. The family has adjusted comfortably to life in the Mid-South. They bought a home in Germantown and appreciate the more relaxed pace a smaller city brings. Pam teaches special education at Houston High, but during the summer months, “the girls and I enjoy girly things, like salon days at home, swimming, or having a scavenger hunt to explore the city.” Her spontaneity is balanced, too. “I also make sure the girls have a schedule so they can get their school work done.” MP

C hoosing a school f or your children takes thoughtf ul consideration. M emphis is f ortunate to have a wide range of choices. F rom public and C atholic education to independent and charter schools, with a little research, yo ll find the right fit.

The merger of the city and county public school systems has significantly changed the education landscape for parents in Shelby County. Today, there are many more public school choices than there were a decade ago. But trying to understand those options isn’t easy. The following information, from memphisschoolguide.org, written by Ginger Spickler, will help you get a better grasp on the different schools available. If you go to the site, you’ll find a link under each section with additional school profiles and data.

Traditional Schools

All students in Shelby County are zoned to a neighborhood public school. All public schools are tuition-free and follow state-established guidelines for standards, safety and evaluation. Whereas all public schools in Shelby County used to fall into one of two school districts, as of 2014, there are now eight school districts. Start your search with your neighborhood school, regardless of the rumors you might have heard about it from friends or neighbors. Even if you don’t end up choosing it, you’ll at least have made your own informed opinion and have a good comparison as you continue your search. If you’ll be choosing a school other than your neighborhood school, you’ll need to go through that school district’s transfer process.

Public Optional Schools

Optional Schools, all part of the Shelby County Schools district, offer a somewhat more specialized education, similar to “magnet” schools in other cities, though not all Optional schools have academic requirements. In some Optional Schools, all classes are considered Optional, while others operate as a “school within a school,” featuring some Optional and some traditional classrooms in each grade level. See a list of schools by type and program focus.

Public iZone Schools

Innovation Zone (iZone) Schools are a subset of schools (all in the SCS district) that operate with more resources and more autonomy from the district than traditional public schools. Administrators at the school level are given more freedom over staffing, budgets, programs, and schedules (iZone schools typically have a longer school day). They may experiment with innovative teaching or technology-usage methods.

Charter Schools

Charter schools are public schools (no tuition), but operate more independently from the school district than traditional public schools do, particularly in regards to things like curricu-

lum, how to hire teachers (though all must be state-certified), or even the length of the school day or year. All charters operating in Tennessee are not-for-profit. Some charters are single-site schools, while others are part of a larger charter management organization (CMO) that may operate multiple schools. To date, in Shelby County, all charters have been authorized by either Shelby County Schools (SCS) or the Achievement School District (ASD). For more Frequently Asked Questions about charters, visit the Tennessee Charter School Center or the Tennessee Department of Education. SCS charter schools do not have attendance zones — if you are interested in applying for your child, you must apply directly to the school. If there are more applicants than spaces available in the school, a lottery is used to determine who will get a spot. Most ASD schools (including the charters) do have attendance zones, and priority is given to students living within that zone. However, eligibility has opened up a little (and gotten more complicated) recently. Check the ASD section of the Districts page for more details. While these schools got to the iZone for being on the state’s Priority List of schools in the bottom 5 percent for student achievement, many schools in the iZone have enjoyed strong test score growth since their turnarounds, so pay more attention to these schools’ Growth scores than Achievement scores.

Municipalities & Their Schools

A number of communities in Shelby County elected to start their own school systems. If you live in Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland, or Millington, you can opt to attend one of these schools. Go to town websites for further information.

Private Schools

Private schools are not funded by the state, so they fund operations by charging tuition, though many private schools offer some form of financial aid. Schools are typically run by an independent body (a school board, the Catholic Diocese, etc.) and because they’re exempt from state oversight and mandated testing, they have the freedom to choose their own standards and educational approach. While the majority of private schools in Memphis have a religious affiliation, there are also a number of non-religious schools focusing on a wide variety of methodologies and approaches. The Memphis Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) and the Catholic Diocese of Memphis represent a large number of private schools in Memphis. When weighing whether your family can afford a private school, you’ll want to ask about all the associated costs – in addition to tuition, most private schools also charge fees for books, activities, technology, meals, etc. However, some private schools were designed specifically with low-income families in mind, and these may be a great choice if you qualify.

SCHOOL CHOICE IN SHELBY COUNTY

This year, SCS has an online option for school registration: The InfoSnap online registration tool. The portal goes live Monday, July 13. You can register for your child’s zoned school or approved transfer location using any computer or smart phone.
