THE LAZY, HAZY, CRAZY DAYS OF SUMMER MICHELLE McKISSACK

We are solidly in the midst of summertime and all the fun and rhythm it brings. As a child, it seemed my summers moved at a much slower pace than the summers my kids now enjoy. I remember eating frosted flakes for breakfast and roller skating all day long up and down the sidewalk in front of my house. The one organized activity was a 1-2 week stint of swimming lessons that my parents placed my siblings and me in every summer until we were adept in keeping ourselves afloat in the water. I think it was also a secret way for my mom to get us out of the house and her hair for an hour. Well, now I’m carrying on that same tradition as my daughter, Bliss, starts her second summer of swim lessons at the Y. She learned how to swim last summer, but she has a way to go until she is proficient and learns all the various strokes like her big brothers. But in addition to swimming, my three younger kids have already participated in ballet camp, basketball camp, summer baseball league, and a summer scholars program at the University of Memphis, and my oldest just returned from his freshman year in college after a 3-week singing tour in South Africa with the Yale Glee Club. Whew! I don’t know about you, but after a couple of weeks of doing nothing, I was excited for trips to the library as a kid. But the busy lifestyles of today oftentimes demand placing our kids in more organized activities. That’s why I love this month’s cover story, Walking in Memphis (page 16). It gives you permission to slow down and go for a walk and explore some history of our city. We had a lot of fun on this photo shoot. I want to give a shout-out to our Memphis Parent art director, Bryan Rollins, who captured images from every angle, in the heat, to help tell the story (see behind-the-scenes photo). And now I’m going to try to take some of my own advice and do less the rest of the summer with my children. Happy Parenting!

Endometriosis – Diagnosis and Treatment A couple of months ago, I wrote an article about painful periods and their causes. In that article, I mentioned that endometriosis is a very common cause of pain that can have consequences besides just painful periods, and that women with endometriosis need to have it removed surgically by a surgeon who specializes in complete removal using laser, not just burning with heat or electricity. Today I wanted to speak a little more about endometriosis, how it causes infertility, and how we treat it using both surgical and medical techniques that preserve fertility and prevent recurrence.
What Causes the Pain?
Endometriosis is caused by cells of the uterine lining growing in other parts of the body. Most of the time it is close to the uterus, but can be present almost anywhere in rare cases. These cells that normally grow and shed with your monthly cycle often cause pain and bleeding/bruising when they are present in other places. If endometriosis is located near sensitive places like pelvic nerves, the pain is often severe – even if the amount of endometriosis is small. Conversely, a woman with severe endometriosis can have almost no pain if the lesions are in less sensitive areas. Because of this discrepancy between severity of endometriosis and level of pain, many women with endometriosis remain undiagnosed until another problem – such as infertility or miscarriage – presents itself.
What Are the Treatments?
When endometriosis is suspected, women should be offered surgical removal. Although all OBGYNs have been trained on removal of endometriosis in their residency, most have not been extensively trained to recognize all of the ways endometriosis can appear during surgery. Complete removal is essential for reducing the risk of recurrence, and proper technique in repairing the surfaces that endometriosis is removed from is necessary to prevent scar tissue formation. This is why so many women and their physicians are hesitant to do surgery for endometriosis – because if not done well, the surgery may not help and in some cases make things worse. As with all surgery, the better trained your surgeon is, the more likely you are to have a successful outcome. Treatment after surgery is also important. Endometriosis is often associated with hormone imbalance, chronic inflammation, irritable bowel syndrome and pelvic floor muscle spasms. All of these issues need to be addressed before, during and after surgery to ensure that the pain, inflammation and other problems associated with endometriosis go away and stay gone. Endometriosis, like most other diseases related to women’s health, can be treated in ways that are both natural and healthy without artificial hormones and the side-effects they cause.

Memphis Parent takes a tour of downtown

Ogle shares with the group of youngsters, as they embark on an hour-long journey, how Court Square is the only remaining park in its original form laid out by the city’s founders in 1819. The land was set aside to build a courthouse, but no courthouse was ever built on Court Square. However, the location was the site of Memphis' first schoolhouse. And it’s home to the majestic fountain erected in 1876.

As Ogle points in a different direction, he glimpses a street sign to bring to the kids’ attention. “Do you see that? That’s November 6th Street. It’s the only street in the United States named for a month, day, and year. The year won’t fit on the sign but it marks the date in 1934 when Memphis became the first city to join the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority). Now a street that looks more like an alley has taken on an entirely new significance to the kids. 6 11 6

The group meanders along Main street hearing tidbits about “this and that” and makes its way up Madison to the steps of the University of Memphis Law School. Despite the imposing building, and its history of formerly being the main U.S. post office, it’s an unassuming stone block perched right in front on the sidewalk that’s captivating. The stone, erected by the Engineers Club in 1923, marks the zero point in Memphis. For example, if you put in your Google maps to provide the distance from Memphis to St. Louis. This is the point that it’s being measured from. Interesting!
On a steamy summer afternoon, Jimmy Ogle stands in the shade under the canopy of trees in Court Square between Main and Second streets in downtown Memphis as he readies to take our cover kid, Myles, and a few friends on a magical tour. Ogle is the official historian for Shelby County, but long before he received that title in 2014, he has fascinated tourists and locals alike with stories of the little known mysteries of Memphis. “Not many people know that the famous inventor Thomas Edison lived here, running a telegraph after the civil war. He worked across from Court Square,” he tells the kids as the tour kicks off. Ogle weaves facts and information on a regular basis during his Jimmy Ogle Tours, which he has offered for free for more than 10 years. This has been a busy summer as he takes campers on tours. “I’ve lived here all my life and have worked 40 years in parks and recreation. Another stop on our Memphis Parent tour is taking in the gorgeous vista of the mighty Mississippi River. We reached this lookout by crossing over the footbridge behind the law school linking the Front Street Park to the bluff. It’s known as the Chickasaw Bluff or Fourth Bluff. The bluffs were numbered by men working the river years ago — from one to four, starting from “up north” along the Mississippi. Jimmy details how riverboating and steamboating have long been in the historical DNA of Memphis. The city was founded on the river and built on cotton, with the historic cobblestones alongside the river’s edge being laid with slave labor. Cotton along with hardwood in the 19th century made Memphis a hub for industry. Hundreds of years ago, animals and Native Americans determined the pathways (that later became roadways) to this highest piece of ground on the Mississippi River between Cairo, Illinois, and Natchez, Mississippi.
THE PEANUT SHOPPE
One of the last stops on our tour involves snacking! You haven’t been to downtown Memphis if you haven’t visited the Peanut Shoppe. The Peanut Shoppe is the only nut shop of its kind in Memphis. The downtown favorite has been open on Main Street since 1949. It’s a narrow little shop that looks like a throwback to another era. But the sweet aroma as you open the door and the shop’s array of nuts and candies make you realize that kids of all ages from yesteryear to today would enjoy this treat on a warm summer day.
OFF THE BEATEN PATH When Jimmy Ogle is not giving historic talks and tours, he puts on another hat that also brings his wealth of knowledge about Memphis and the region into play. Last year he was named the Duckmaster at the Peabody Hotel. He now oversees the world-famous mallard ducks and their daily march from their penthouse atop the historic hotel to the lobby fountain. “People all over the world love Memphis and like to come and visit,” Ogle says. “I am really living the dream. I get to live and breathe it every day and share it with others. It’s wonderful!”

The search for the right school for your child is a monumental task, whether you’re just getting started with preschool or transitioning from elementary to middle and high school. Fortunately, there are a lot of options in the greater Memphis area. Memphis Parent has outlined a list of schools and background information on types of school environments to jumpstart your effort — because knowledge is power! To get started, read about those options in this article, then go online to the Memphis School Guide
(memphisschoolguide.org), an independent nonprofit website developed to help parents more closely examine the education landscape. On the site, you’ll find a link under each section with additional school profiles and data provided by Ginger Spickler with Memphis School Guide.
PRIVATE SCHOOLS Private schools are not funded by the state and must fund operations by charging tuition, though many private schools offer some form of financial aid. Schools are typically run by an independent body (a school board, the Catholic Diocese, etc.), and as they are exempt from state oversight and mandated testing, faculty have the freedom to choose their own standards and educational approach. While the majority of private schools in Memphis have a religious affiliation, there are also a number of non-religious schools focusing on a wide variety of methodologies and approaches. The Memphis Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) and the Catholic Diocese of Memphis represent a large number of private schools in Memphis. Various tuition and fees. Check school websites for details. MUNICIPALITY SCHOOL SYSTEMS A number of communities in Shelby County manage their own school systems. Residents who live in Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland, or Millington, can opt to attend one of these schools. SHELBY COUNTY SCHOOLS scsk12.org • 416-5300 Shelby County Schools (SCS) is the largest public school system in Tennessee and among the 25 largest systems in the nation. SCS operates 218 schools in the city of Memphis and in unincorporated and reserve areas of Shelby County. The district includes Traditional, Optional, iZone, and Charter schools under their umbrella. Traditional are the zoned schools any student can attend according to home residence. Optional are similar to magnet schools in other cities and have varying academic achievement requirements. iZone are schools on the state’s priority list working to improve test scores. Charter schools are tuitionfree and operate independently from the SCS district. All of these schools are listed at the SCS website.
