As a young mother, my mom was a single parent raising hard-headed daughters mostly alone. I don’t think I realized just how difficult that was for her until I got a little older and tried this adulthood thing on for size myself. With two young children, she went back to college and got a teaching degree. She moved us a couple hours north of most of our family so we could attend school in one of the best districts in the state. She worked tirelessly and selflessly to make sure my sister and I had everything we needed (and wanted, within reason) to thrive. Looking back, I know I didn’t thank her enough. No, we didn’t have the most expensive wardrobes or the biggest house. We didn’t always get the coolest new gadgets or the toys we waved in front of her in the store. But what we did have was a mother who loved us deeply, was always honest with us, and taught us that hard work will get you where you want in life; everything is earned and nothing is free. As a teenager, I thought I knew all there was to know. I despised taking no for an answer from her and rarely accepted it as the final say when it went against my desires. She was tough, and so was I. I’m surprised she never smacked my hard head into next Sunday. These days, I still don’t take no for an answer in many areas of life. The words “You can’t do that” are somewhat foreign to me. Because yes, I can! I inherited my strong will from my mama. When some people may have questioned her ability to make it on her own, she didn’t settle in with the doubt that might have crept in with a “no” from others. Because yes, she could. My mother is brave. My mother is stubborn. She’s funny and blunt and loving and stern. I, too, am all those things. And I’m grateful for every ounce of her that I carry within me. Let’s all take the time this month (and all year ’round) to thank our mothers for all they’ve given us.

PARENTS: Teacher Appreciation Week runs May 6th through May 10th. It has been designated by the National PTA as a special time to honor the men and women who lend their passion and skills to educating children. Teacher Appreciation Week is a great time as the school year is ending to let your children's teachers know how much you value what they have done for your children this year. After all, everyone likes to know that their work is appreciated. A note or email is an excellent way to do this. Be creative and think beyond the academic progress your children have made. You might mention such things as how the teacher has helped your child become more organized or to find a fascination with a subject such as history or science. And don't forget to mention how much your children have enjoyed having this teacher. It is also a nice gesture to drop a note to the administration at the school outlining the positive experiences that a teacher has given your children. Consider also extending your appreciation of a teacher to your Facebook and other social media pages. And if a teacher has been especially helpful to your children, consider presenting him or her with a small gift. If your children have especially enjoyed this school year, have them also share their appreciation of a teacher by writing a note or an email or mentioning this on social media.

Must-Read Books for Moms
Give mom a gift that will have a lasting impact. BY JENNIFER BOREN
Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive
M AY
20 1 9
by Stephanie Land
When Stephanie Land discovers she is unexpectedly pregnant, her dreams of a college education and a career as a writer evaporate with her new responsibilities. In this fresh take on what it means to be a mom living in poverty, Land sheds light on a group of Americans who have largely lived in the shadows of the upper-middle class — the service class. After giving birth, Land started working as a housekeeper but never relinquished the dream of a higher education. She began taking online classes and writing every spare moment she could find. Land kept her dream — the American dream — alive through it all. Give this book to moms who believe in making things happen, even when you are on the bottom rung of the ladder.
If, Then
by Kate Hope Day
What do you buy the mom who already has just about everything? You give her a good book and the gift of time to read it! While the latest New York Times bestseller is not as glamorous as a new Coach purse or diamond stud earrings, books are a gift that can be deeply intimate and have a lasting impact on the special mom in your life. Personalizing your books makes them all the more special, so take a moment and write a special message in the inside cover page and date it, or stamp your child’s fingerprints on the title page. Next time you are at the bookstore, look for these must-read books for moms.

The chronicle began as a written history for her children but has since become a heartbreaking, yet inspiring ode to the biggest miracle of all — life. This memoir is perfect gift for fans of Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom.
The Perfect Mother by Aimee Molloy
We all remember the first time we left our new baby with a sitter. It can be a stressful time filled with anxiety and fear about all the things that could go wrong. At the insistence of her new moms’ group, the May Mothers, newly single Winnie decides to finally leave her baby for a night out on the town. Her worst fears become reality when 6-week-old Midas is stolen from his crib, and a sensational investigation ensues. Fans of suspense and Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl will gobble up this read. Read this book before it makes its way to the big screen.
If the mom in your life has little time during her day to read, consider gifting an Audible subscription so she can listen to audiobooks during her commute or while doing household chores. If she swears by Marie Kondo’s method of discarding items that do not spark joy, gift cards for iBooks, Kindle, and Nook are great for buying eBooks that won’t take up physical space. Say Bye to Stress
These tips can help you find balance in parenthood. by CHARDAY WILSON
When I had my first kid, people would always ask me if I wanted to have more children. Lovestruck by being a first-time mom, I would always reply with a yes. “Yes, I want more. I love being a mom.” At that time, nothing was more fulfilling than seeing a mini version of myself looking right back at me. I am three love-bugs in now, and when the day-to-day stress of it becomes overwhelming, I try to find that first-time mom within me again. Her energy. Her light. Her optimism. She’s still there, but sometimes she gets buried under the demands of life and motherhood. I want to share some simple ways for you to combat stress and anxiety that have worked for me. Self-care is the best care. Self-care is the quiet and subtle way that we honor ourselves in everyday moments, like taking the time to lotion up after a shower instead of rushing off to the next chore. It’s taking a mental health day out for yourself to make sure you are OK. It can be taking time to spend with friends or your mom or whoever gives you room to be free and perfectly imperfect. Making tending to yourself a priority puts you in alignment with your core being. Self-care can reignite the fire that tends to dwindle when we are stressing about mom stuff and dealing with the craziness of just being us and just being a woman who at times still feels like a girl trying to figure it all out. Another good way to offset stress is by picking up a new hobby or reconnecting with an old one. I’m a dancer. Have been since I was a
teenager. It’s a joy for me. I do it even now as a woman in her 30s simply because it feels good. It’s a way for me to connect with myself as a person and not just as a mom. It’s my personal creative space to build joy. This is important. I know this because the years that I let go by without honoring that passion always left a void. I may have had happy moments, but I wasn’t whole. Being whole allows us the grace to be able to pour into others out of the surplus of living well. Make sure that you are living well daily by making room for your passions. Be sure to take some time and dedicate it to a mental wellness diet. Certain foods can cause our brains to operate in a funk. Added sugar doesn’t cause anxiety, but it decreases the brain’s ability to cope with it and makes anxiety worse. It sends a bad signal to the brain that has been linked to anxiety disorders, depression, and even schizophrenia. During your diet, get your sweet fix from natural sources like fruit and honey. If you are feeling extra motivated, ditch fried and processed foods, caffeine, and white bread. Eat food that is good for the brain like salmon, whole grains, fruits, veggies, eggs, nuts, and even dark chocolate. Finally, I’m aware that some stress we have can be directly related to finances. This holds
true for single moms, married moms, almostmoms, and so on. Finances are a big deal in every family dynamic. After hitting some bumps in the road, I found some ways to bring in extra income that didn’t take up a lot of time. Have a yard sale Sell on eBay Teach someone to do something that you know well and charge a fee Self-publish a book (paperback or eBook or both) Having more than one way to bring in income can be very freeing once you find what works for you. Stress and anxiety are signals that something is off balance. When it hits, we must pause and see what’s really happening. Do I need to adjust my schedule? Is an unhealthy diet draining my energy? Do I need to deal with something that I’ve been putting off? Mamas are the precious cornerstone of society. We must be well. Make mental reminders of the things that first excited you about becoming a mom. Hold onto those gentle reminders and move forward knowing that nothing has been placed upon you that you don’t have the power within to handle and overcome.
Charday Wilson lives in Memphis and is the mom of three — Malachi (13), Ni'yma (9), and Isaiah (7).

PLANNING FOR
PR E-K
Consider educational environment and cost when choosing a school for your child. BY CARLISSA SHAW
M AY
20 1 9
As a first-time mom, the cost of early childhood education knocked the wind out of me. Prior to becoming a parent, I remember reading a few articles about mothers leaving careers because of the cost of childcare. But it wasn’t until I was a parent myself that I experienced the sticker shock of early childhood education.
14
Admittedly, my daughter and I are very blessed to have gone two years without professional childcare. My mother is a retired homemaker and has graciously served as my daughter's caregiver since I returned to work when she was just 4 weeks old. After two years of hanging out with Nana every day, we are now on a quest to find the perfect early childhood center for our daughter, which has been nothing short of overwhelming. My daughter is starting school this August at nearly 3 years old. Because of her age, I decided to skip the traditional daycare and opt to research and find preschools that start with pre-K2 programs. I wanted her to be in a more school-focused environment, and if the school is a good fit, I want her to stay at the school for elementary. Thankfully, many schools (mostly in the private school network) now offer pre-K programs for 2-year-olds. My quest for early childhood care started much like any research assignment in modern history, with my dear friend, Google. I Googled “early childhood education Memphis,” and tons of schools populated the screen.
With so many options, how do I narrow my search? I decided to focus on what I thought would be beneficial for my daughter to learn during such a critical phase in her development and pinpointed the areas of focus that are important to my family.
My top five areas are: • Play-based learning • An intentional focus of the whole child • Social development • Foreign language • Music Next, I developed a school list based upon school websites and word-of-mouth that mirrored the
$40,000 on early childhood education. Locally, the schools of my choice ranged from $750 to $1,100 per month. This makes early childhood education the most expensive bill for our household. I quickly realized that our budget would have to adjust to accommodate this significant new budget item.
For financial planning, I chose to: • Develop an additional stream of income • Aggressively pay off debt • Review and minimize monthly expenses (such as finding cheaper phone service)
DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU LIVE AND THE QUALITY OF THE PRESCHOOL, AVERAGE COSTS RANGE FROM $4,460 TO $13,158 PER YEAR ($372 TO $1,100 MONTHLY). areas of focus that I wanted to provide my child. After developing my list, I visited all of those schools (seven in total). I understand the time constraints of being a working mother, but I refused to skip this step because this investment is too important for my child and my finances. Depending on where you live and the quality of the preschool, average costs range from $4,460 to $13,158 per year ($372 to $1,100 monthly), according to the National Association of Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies (NACCRRA). Over three years, a family could spend close to
• Strictly stick to a budget • Save a few months of care cost ahead of time As a parent, we all want to give our kids the best education that we can, but we also have to keep in mind that our child’s first teacher is his/her parent. The cost of early childhood education is a shocker, and you may not be realistically able to afford the school of your choice. Just remember that you can teach everything they are learning at this age at home. It is so important to develop your parenting philosophy for education and stick to the plan.

Affordable Ways TO
THANK MOM Show your appreciation — on a budget — this Mother’s Day. By REBEKAH M. YEAROUT
Forget the typical gifts this Mother’s Day, even if you’re not exactly flush with money. Mom is always going to love any gift you give her, but you can get creative with a gift that she really wants — without overdrafting your bank account. She certainly wouldn’t want that to happen! Here are a few ideas for Mother’s Day gifts that won’t cost you more than $100.
M AY

MASSAGE THERAPY. Treat the mom in your life to relaxation with a professional massage. At A Great Massage (agreatmassagetn.com), moms can get a fullbody massage for $55 and up. With locations from Collierville to Downtown, it’s accessible and sure to help mom relieve life’s stress. Also, A Great Massage doesn’t make you buy a membership, so you can treat her as often as you’re able.
16
CHEERS! What mom doesn’t enjoy a glass of wine? For wine enthusiasts, the MuNiMuLa Wine Tray is a sleek and fun gift. Made of aluminum and available in a variety of colors, the tray holds four wine glasses and a bottle, so even if she’s a little tipsy, mom can carry it across a room without worry of stains (or wasted wine). Easy to use at the park or carry to your porch, it costs $98 and is sold at uncrate.com. FACIALS AND PAMPERING. For fans of professional skin care, Bombay Salon & Spa offers facials ranging from $35 to $80, as well as a Diamond Microdermabrasion service for $99. Bombay has several locations (five in the metropolitan area, including Southaven), so get her a gift
card and let her take her pick from the numerous facials offered. Visit bombaysalonspa.com for details. PERSONALIZED JEWELRY. Put some extra thought into that necklace. For $59 (etsy.com), you can get personalized fingerprint, handprint, or footprint jewelry with an engraving, or choose a photo plus an engraving. If you’re looking to spend less, check out designs for photo engraved pendants at Personal Creations (personalcreations.com) for as low as $20. GIFTS THAT KEEP GIVING. For makeup and skincare enthusiasts, get your already beautiful mom an ipsy glam bag for $10 a month, or splurge for an annual subscription at $110 at ipsy.com. Each month, five to six beauty products — from eyeliners to anti-aging creams — are featured in cute, seasonal bags. And if the glam isn’t for her, the monthly subscription can be cancelled any time. DIY GIFT BASKET. If you want to get creative, build a mom-themed basket of goodies. Pick her favorite colors for the ribbons and decorations, add an enlarged family picture for the backdrop, and make the treats all about her. Put in a bottle of her favorite wine or a bag of good coffee, add a gift card to one of her top local eateries or some delicious locally-bought sweets (try Muddy’s Bake Shop or Whimsy Cookie), and make your own card to top it off. Store-bought gift baskets are nice, but mom will be moved by your thoughtfulness.
ORIGINAL WALL DECOR. Stick’r Frames sells decorative picture frame wall decals, which are removable and reusable. If you’re really crafty, try your hand at a homemade doorway hanger made with empty plastic water bottles. Cut out flower shapes from the bottom of the bottles, punch a hole in the middle, gather up some fishing line or thread, and string those flowers together! A great idea for small windows, like above your sink or at the top of an outside door, and the extra effort will make mom feel extra special. Digitize her photos. If mom has boxes of photos lying around from her childhood, stop the ravages of time from consuming them and scan them, then put them on a CD or a flash drive (with a little time, you can organize the photos into digital folders for her, too). If you’re not totally cash-strapped, you can use a photo digitizing service or stop at a FedEx Office Print & Ship Center, but it can also be done with a home scanner. Give mom a gift certificate good for one day — a whole day — to do anything she wants. If she opts to lay around the house, go out with friends, or spend time with you, let her choose what she does — and on what day she does it. Mother’s Day shouldn’t be the only day of the year you make the mom in your life feel like a queen.

SUSAN BABIN By JULIA BAKER
M AY
20 1 9
Susan Babin, a preschool teacher at Bartlett United Methodist Preschool, has developed a deep appreciation for teaching and caregiving. Babin, who started off working in the marketing field, first found a love for teaching when she volunteered to teach a Vacation Bible School class shortly after marrying her husband. “I was very nervous about teaching my first class. It was a new thing for me,” she says. “But, it just came so natural so quickly. And I developed such a love for the kids. So I think in that moment, I realized, hey, I actually can do this.” Despite her newfound appreciation for working with kids, Babin continued her career in marketing until she had to take some time off to care for her first child. “My daughter, Elizabeth, was born with Down syndrome,” she says. “Having her threw me into a world of teaching, because we had to teach her to do the basic things that other children could do. And as we taught her, I developed more of a love for teaching.” Babin went on to have two more children, and once the youngest went off to kindergarten, Babin decided she’d seriously pursue teaching. “I had kids and needed more kids,” she jokes. Initially, Babin started off her teaching career at Bartlett United Methodist’s Kid’s Day Out program
teaching 2-year-olds, and she continued to do so for 20 years, mixing in stints working with special needs adults and operating a local FasTracKids, a child enrichment program. Then, shortly after receiving her master’s degree in education from the University of Memphis six years ago, she switched over to the church’s preschool to teach 3-year-olds. Babin has applied the knowledge she acquired from her child enrichment program to teach her preschool students. “My educational philosophy is, at this age, kids need to be exposed to lots of different things,” she says. “Each child will gather building blocks from those things. Then, later on, when they are reintroduced to those lessons in school, it’s going to come back to them, and they’ll have a better foundation to build on.” Babin says that one of the building blocks she enjoys introducing her students to is science. “There’s nothing more exciting than an Alka-Seltzer rocket, a volcano in a cup, or clouds in a jar. All those things are just amazing,” she says, adding, “We definitely believe in play as learning. There’s nothing better
you can do really, because play is their number-one tool for learning.” Babin believes learning is a two-way street. “I have learned that you never know everything and that there’s always more to learn, not just for children, but also for adults,” she says. “Every child’s a little puzzle, and it’s fascinating to me to figure out how each student learns best.” After this year, Babin will be taking a break from teaching full-time to care for her oldest daughter and her fatherin-law, but she leaves with something special. “I love that I walk away every day feeling like I have made a contribution to the world,” she says. “I never feel like there’s a day when I’m with the children or teaching that I have not made a difference somehow, someway.” Babin will continue to fulfill her purpose by substitute teaching for the preschool and working part-time at Bellevue Baptist’s Shepherd’s Haven program with adults who have special needs. “I’ll miss my students very much,” she says, “but I’m Facebook friends with a lot of their parents, so I’ll still get to watch them grow up.”

GIVE TIME This Mother’s Day, give the best gift of all. BY JEFF HULETT
“Mama was my greatest teacher — a teacher of compassion, love, and fearlessness. If love is sweet as a flower, then my mother is that sweet flower of love.” — Stevie Wonder PSA: Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 12th. I repeat, Mother’s Day is May 12th. Every year, I try to find something nice for the moms in my life, but the more I search for the perfect present, the more I find that time is the best gift of all. Let’s face it, moms are the best. They are nurturing, affirming, loving, supportive, and in many cases, brutally honest. And they just want to see us and spend time with us. Pretty cool if you think about it.

“You’re burning the candle at both ends.” “I’m proud of you.” “You have to learn to say no.” “You need to apologize.” “I didn’t raise you that way.” “I love you just the way you are.” “I know you are busy.” If you’ve ever heard the following phrases, you have a fantastic mom! Think about it, they know you better than you know yourself. They brought you into this world, and they can take you out, or at the very least, put you in your place. They know all of your secrets and still love you unconditionally. My mom Susan and I have funny banter, so it’s always nice to take an afternoon to sit together just the two of us and laugh. We tend to make fun of my dad and brother quite a bit, as they give us lots of fodder. Lunch with drinks makes for an even more amusing time. As caretakers, sometimes it’s hard to find extra hours to unwind. I recommend an outing to a place of your mother’s choosing. As for my wife Annie, she is a self-proclaimed introvert, so if I can get her some much-needed alone time, we all win. It’s not that she doesn’t appreciate the love and presents, she just likes some peace and quiet every now and again. Having kids makes Mother’s Day even more fun. Who knows what plans they will have in store? Recently, for my 40th birthday, they pulled out all the stops with color-coordinated streamers and plates to match the cake. I plan on following their lead, for sure. They tend to build up the holidays and special occasions in unpredictable ways. There will likely be tears. My mother-in-law Sheryl enjoys a good conversation with her goofy son-inlaw and seems to really appreciate my dad jokes. She also likes it when I help her set up her phone and try to fix her computer when it’s on the fritz. No matter what you do for your mom, wife, or mother-in-law, just remember that all they want is to see you and spend quality time with you. Is that so hard? I didn’t think so. Good luck! *Note: You should also consider getting them a card and some flowers. Your time is a gift, but think about all your mom does for you! Jeff Hulett is a freelance writer, musician, and PR consultant in Memphis. He lives in the Vollintine Evergreen neighborhood with his wife Annie, two girls Ella and Beatrice, and dog Chalupa. He’s a fan of dad jokes.
