The Mayor’s Message
Darren Musselwhite Mayor
Welcome to Southaven, Mississippi, the “Top of Mississippi.” As the third largest city in the state, Southaven is also one of the fastest growing communities in Mississippi. As we grow, city leaders are making every effort to ensure continued prosperity while upholding the high quality of life and safety our residents have long enjoyed.
S
outhaven is listed as the eighth-safest city in Mississippi by Movoto Real Estate via the 2013 FBI Uniform Crime Report. We take great pride in our beautiful neighborhoods and the affordable housing available to our residents. Geographically, Southaven is located within three hours driving distance from six states and within a day’s drive of 50 percent of the U.S. population. It is the northern gateway to Mississippi, strategically located near I-55 and I-269. People from across the region and nation come here to enjoy the amenities our city has to offer. Southaven is extremely proud to be a part of the DeSoto County School system, one of the best in the state of Mississippi. Our city is home to two high schools, Southaven High School and DeSoto Central High School, as well as several elementary, intermediate, and middle schools. The DeSoto County School District is devoted to academic excellence while offering a variety of extra-curricular programs for our students. We are also home to the renowned Snowden Grove Baseball Complex, an award-winning, state-of-the-art, baseball facility. The complex features 17 ballfields and amenities typically found only at professional stadiums. Recent additions include a stadium roof, chair-back stadium seats (to one of the fields at Quads A, B, and C), a centerfield “Batter’s Eye” screen, and a press box where the televised Dizzy Dean World Series 12-year-old championship game is
played. Snowden Grove Baseball Complex is home to numerous youth events, including the Dizzy Dean World Series, the NABF World Series, 10-year-old USSSA World Series, competitive baseball tournaments, and recreational baseball, too. This park is just one of the many community parks residents enjoy. As a Certified Retirement Community (by Hometown Mississippi Retirement, the state’s official retiree attraction program), part of enjoying retirement living here is taking advantage of what our city has to offer, benefits that ensure our retirees enjoy an active, affordable, healthy, and secure life. What’s more, our new Senior Center at Snowden Grove is now officially open and hosting the Forever Young Senior Citizen Program. Our outdoor amphitheater is another point of pride in Southaven. BankPlus Amphitheater at Snowden Grove, the MidSouth’s newest outdoor venue, has hosted some of the biggest musical acts in the entertainment world, including Tim McGraw, Miranda Lambert, Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, and Lynyrd Skynyrd to name a few. A stage enclosure to the amphitheater is now complete with video display boards and overall aesthetic and acoustical improvements. In 2017, we will celebrate the amphitheater’s 12th anniversary with the best entertainment lineup in the facility’s history.
Southaven celebrated its 37th anniversary as a city with the Southaven Springfest at Snowden Grove Park. Each year, barbecue teams compete for the Mississippi State Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, an event sanctioned in 2016 by the Memphis Barbecue Network and the Kansas City Barbeque Society. Springfest also includes a spectacular carnival midway, games, live concerts, and concessions. This popular, five-day event continues to grow, attracting an estimated 35,000 annually in celebration of our city. On the retail front, we are extremely proud of the opening of Tanger Outlet Shops, a development by Tanger Outlet Centers. This upscale, destination-style shopping center includes 75 stores and occupies approximately 310,000 square feet of retail space. It is one of the highest-quality developments in the history of Southaven and is expected to create a resurgence of economic development in the Church Road corridor, thus adding to our city’s financial strength. Southaven is our home; where leadership, vision, and dedication are essential to promoting economic success while maintaining pride in our hometown and protecting our quality of life. I hope you have an opportunity to visit and enjoy the countless amenities Southaven has to offer. As the city’s Mayor, it is my sincere honor to serve you. Please feel free to contact me if I can ever be of assistance.

Chamber Board and Staff
Welcome to Southaven. For those residents and business owners who have shared in our growth and success, we thank you for your continued support and contributions to our city. If you’re an active member of the Southaven Chamber of Commerce, then you know the big news for 2016 was the Chamber’s move to a new location — from City Hall, where the nonprofit operated for nearly 20 years — to 500 Main Street.

hy the relocation? The Southaven Chamber serves 650 members, with a 13-member board that reflects the vibrant diversity of our business community. Our function is to advocate for business interests, coordinate community development programs, and be a liaison between business and government affairs. “We want to be a conduit for commerce,“ says Executive Director Carmen Kyle. “We want to reach a broader spectrum of the business community and this move enables us to do just that.” The search for a new building was underway when Kyle joined the Southaven Chamber in January 2014. While several deals came close, none ultimately offered the space, affordability, and parking potential of this new location. The move was also a nod of support to the revitalization efforts of Main Street, Southaven’s more established business district and an area Mayor Darren Musselwhite has been working to improve during his administration. The refurbishing of the building became a communit y effort, says Kyle, with Chamber members pitching in on everything from contracting and renovation work to lending a hand the actual day of the move. Much of the original building, previously owned by Trustmark Bank, had to be renovated. Even the 12,000-pound vault door that dated to the original bank in 1969, had to be removed. When t he g ra nd open i ng to ok place August 10th, more than 250 wellwishers turned out to celebrate. All were easily accommodated in the spacious, 3,500-square-foot building, with ample overflow parking available in an adjoining lot. In addition to office space, the new
building features a board room, training room, entrepreneur center, and an outdoor patio space. “The engine of the Chamber is small business,” observes Debbie King, Assistant Director. “Many business owners don’t have a boardroom or training facility where they can improve the development of their goods and services, so that’s what we can now provide.” GROWING MEMBER SERVICES On tap for 2017 is developing the Chamber’s Turning Point Entrepreneur Center, a meeting room that Kyle and King envision being a resource for budding entrepreneurs. They have been in conversation with a local member of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), an independent agency of the federal government that assists and protects the interests of small business concerns. Kyle says their aim is to provide a checklist that details how to start a business, with topics like obtaining a business license, developing a marketing strategy, and crafting a business plan. They also want to introduce members to resources like yallbusiness.sos.ms.gov, a website created by the Mississippi Secretary of State that brings together a host of demographics that business owners can use to better understand their market. “We want to be a help for those who don’t have that guidance,” says Kyle. “We want to make the city’s business environment healthy. It’s not good if a store has a grand opening at the beginning of the year and a few months later is closed. We want to be able to connect new business owners with others who can help them learn about the ups and downs of business.”

Working in Harmony Rodney and Maria Naramore live in Southaven for many of the reasons folks choose a community: for the affordable living, solid employment, good schools, and nearness of family. 10

“It’s still got that small-town atmosphere but everything you need is within reach.”
S
outhaven is a great place to raise kids,” says Maria Naramore. “It’s still got that small-town atmosphere but everything you need is within reach.” That everything includes amenities like shopping at Tanger Outlet Mall or the many specialty stores sprinkled along Goodman and Getwell Road, grabbing a meal at Lost Pizza, and having easy access to Memphis International Airport, just a short drive up I-55. Maria grew up in this community, before Southaven was even chartered as a city. Her parents moved to DeSoto County from neighboring Whitehaven in the early 1970s, eager to live in a more rural area. At that time, neighborhoods were starting to spring up as other families joined them. She graduated from Southaven High School in 1988. Rodney was reared just a few miles down the road in Marshall County and moved to DeSoto County after they married. The two had met in their early 20s while working at the newly opened Baptist Hospital-DeSoto, then just a three-floor structure. Maria was a switchboard operator, Rodney worked as one of the building engineers. It didn’t take long for love to blossom. The couple got married in 1995, and decided that year to buy two-and-a-half acres of land on Church Road. At $18,000, it was comfortably within their budget, and having acreage allowed them to dream of one day building a home of their own. Back then Church Road, “was just woods, in the country,” remembers Maria. “We thought we’d bought property out in the
sticks!” Of course, for Rodney, having lived in Marshall County, “this felt like the city by comparison.” One day, Maria says, they found their dream home featured in a lifestyle magazine. When Maria showed her mother the picture, her face lit up. “I’ve seen that house around here,” her mother told her. After eventually seeing it themselves, they contacted the builder and six months later, in October 1996, they moved into their new, custom-built home. Rodney still has that magazine clipping and their house plans stashed away in a folder, in his bedroom closet. “It was my castle and her dream house,” he says proudly. Maria laughs and nods, “He’s real sentimental like that.” Southaven’s relaxed lifestyle and strong school system turned out to be the perfect fit for raising their family of four boys: Nathan, Graham, Preston, and Barrett. After earning her associates degree at nearby Northwest Mississippi Community College, Maria eventually left the workforce to be at home with the children while Rodney continued as a Regional Chief Engineer, now with Hertz Realty Group. The boys excel in school and sports. Barrett and Graham play football for DeSoto Central Middle and High School, respectively, and Preston is passionate about hunting and fishing. While the couple hoped to one day have a little girl, God had other plans. Instead, they pursued their dream of owning their own business and opened a home-decor boutique, christening it with their baby girl’s name, Clara Morgan.
“It was amazingly easy to get the store opened,” says Maria. “We started applying for the various licenses we needed and one door opened after another. The city of Southaven was super easy to work with.” For three years, Maria and her business partner, Beth Henry, sold art and home furnishings. Much of the furniture were pieces she and Rodney enjoyed refurbishing together. Rodney’s workshop behind the house became a beehive of activity as they breathed new life into tired buffets and stereo cabinets. If you look around their home today, a serene, inviting space, their handiwork is evident: The handsomely refinished kitchen cabinets, the rustic farm table, the 100-yearold china cabinet Maria lovingly refurbished, all are a testament to the way in which this couple work in harmony with each other. While Southaven’s growth has transformed the small-town feel it had when their marriage was young, the couple remain philosophical about the change. “Growth is a good thing,” says Rodney. “The city’s economic development has to happen. They need infrastructure and you have to have business and growth to have the restaurants and shops.” “When I was growing up, it was just Stateline Road,” adds Maria. “I remember when we got our first McDonald’s there. That was huge. Then Goodman Road had its boom. I agree, it has to happen. But it’s not my little hometown anymore, that’s for sure. It’s even better!”

The Year in Review
John Isner addressing the crowd at tennis court expansion groundbreaking
A city’s strength often stands or falls on meeting the basic needs of its citizens: A safe place to call home, a thriving place for commerce, an affordable lifestyle that enables families to live comfortably and within easy reach of life’s necessities like good jobs, affordable housing, strong schools, and a welcoming community. The City of Southaven embodies those attractive qualities. With pragmatic leadership from Mayor Darren Musselwhite, 2016 saw the continued improvement of the city’s infrastructure to accommodate growth while creating new amenities for the park system to ensure future benefit for residents and visitors alike. tennis community, including professional tennis star John Isner. “My career was launched playing on public courts just like these in my native state of North Carolina,” Isner told the crowd gathered for the event. Isner is ranked among the top 20 players on the ATP World Tour. “This expansion has been in the planning phase for a long time,” Musselwhite told the crowd. “So it’s a special day to see dirt moving. I’m fired up about that. It’s going to be huge when completed.” Kim Terrell, executive director of the DeSoto County Tourism Association, also hailed the new complex, saying “It brings another level of great sports to Southaven.” According to state projections, more than $300 million dollars are generated annually by visitors to DeSoto County who spend money on hotels, restaurants, gas, and other amenities. Jim Green, president of the Northwest Mississippi Tennis Association, sees the tennis court expansion benefitting the economy of the entire region as well. The city extended Freeman Lane, connecting the existing tennis center to Snowden Grove Park, which also houses a baseball complex, a 10,000-seat amphitheater, and a senior center. In addition to the tennis complex, several pedestrian projects are underway throughout the city that will include a major multiuse trail for walking and cycling. This trail will connect Southaven’s Central Park to Snowden Grove Park.
Boosting park amenities
T
he splashiest reveal in 2016 was the city’s announcement of the tennis court expansion at Snowden Grove Park. The $1.7 million expansion brings eight new courts, a pavilion with covered seating, bathrooms, and additional parking to the existing four-court complex. The Snowden Grove Tennis Complex is located at 3750 Freeman Road. The expansion will make Southaven the largest outdoor tennis complex in North Mississippi, with 12 courts total. Musselwhite is confident the complex, which is to be lighted for night play, will attract more youth and adult league tournaments. Tournament play is a good revenue generator, bringing both the city and local businesses tourism dollars spent by visitors. “It’s important for us to give our citizens more activities and opportunities to lead a healthier lifestyle,” says Musselwhite. “And it improves the economic attractiveness of the city. People want to live and bring business to a city with recreational opportunities.” The November 17, 2016 groundbreaking ceremony brought together local dignitaries, state officials, and members of the 12

Mayor Musselwhite’s 2017 Priorities
Growing for business: Infrastructure improvements
D
uring Mayor Musselwhite’s time in office (he was elected in 2013), Southaven growth has steadily increased. At approximately 52,000 residents, it is the state’s third-largest city and considered among the safest communities in Mississippi. In fact, safety is the Mayor’s number one priority, with 53 percent of Southaven’s budget dedicated to maintaining a strong police, fire, and emergency medical services presence. To accommodate the county’s steady growth, infrastructure improvements have been ongoing this year with the widening of north/south corridors including Swinnea and Getwell Roads to ease congestion and make travel safer. These improvements are in tandem with Mississippi Department of Transportation plans to widen the capacity of Interstate 55 corridors throughout the county. “We don’t want our growth to outstrip our infrastructure,” says Jim Flanagan, CEO of DeSoto County Economic Council, citing the importance of funding infrastructure improvements to make the county more appealing to prospective businesses. Musselwhite says the Getwell corridor between Goodman and Church Roads is underdeveloped but extremely valuable land because of its location. “The plans are for commercial or mixed-use zoning,” he says. “But all of that area provides lots of opportunities.” Musselwhite also turned his attention to strengthening Main Street, Southaven’s original business district, as a way of crafting a stronger city identity and boosting civic pride. Beautification has taken place in the form of new signage and decorative streetscaping. Musselwhite believes that with increased civic pride, “You make the city more economically attractive to potential consumers and business owners. It’s the little things that make a difference in a city. It’s the little things that define who we are.” The upgrading of Main Street is good for business, notes Commercial Realtor Jim Brown of Brown Properties. “We’ve got lots of affordable rents for small business on Stateline Road and Airways,” he says. “The mom-and-pop shops are doing well. The fact that the Chamber also elected to invest on Main is an important boost to the older part of Southaven.” The city is adding sidewalks for safer pedestrian traffic on Main Street, from Highway 51 to Northwest Drive. The Carriage Hills neighborhood will also get new sidewalks in an effort to connect Southaven Elementary and Southaven High School and keep children off of busy thoroughfares. The implementation of a Citywide Pavement Management program, allocates $1 million annually towards improved road repairs. This will enable the city’s public works department to keep tabs on the condition of Southaven’s 1,100 roads. “With this program, we have an ongoing record of what’s been done,” says the Mayor. The program enables users to take a virtual tour of individual streets via computer, evaluating road surface wear and potential hazards, such as potholes or loose asphalt, that requires repair. Musselwhite says this type of pavement assessment will better enable the city to keep up with street repairs. Parks Director Wes Brown sees Southaven’s positive growth cycle as being helped by the city and county’s pro-business climate, strong schools, and attractive parks. “We’re so family-friendly; people want to come and raise a family here.”
• Public safety • Continued improvement of city infrastructure • Revitalization and beautification of Southaven’s Main Street • Expanding and improving city parks and recreation • Economic development

Why I Work in Southaven
Agent Barry Bouchillon
WHAT IS YOUR LINE OF WORK?
to be a temporary position, turned into a 25-year career. So it was only fitting that I should have my business here.
I help people manage the risks of everyday life with insurance and financial services. Helping people prepare for and recover from the unexpected events in their lives is my main responsibility.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF DOING BUSINESS IN SOUTHAVEN?
It’s the third-largest municipality in the state. The leadership, from municipal and county government to the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club, those leaders have shown me the meaning of community pride and the importance of investing in what you do, and then reinvesting in our community, people, and schools.
HOW MANY PEOPLE DO YOU EMPLOY?
Six full and part-time employees.
WHEN DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS?
I started as a State Farm agent in 1978. I made Stateline Road my permanent address in 1984 when I built my current office. I find it fitting that this is now called Main Street because everything for years in Southaven was on Stateline Road. I consider Dale’s the heart of Main Street. He was one of the earliest restaurants in Southaven. And while my business is officially on Stateline, I consider myself part of Main Street, too.
WHAT IS SOMETHING INTERESTING PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SOUTHAVEN?
Up through the 1950s, this area had a lot of small dairy farms and was completely agricultural. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the big hotels in Memphis were served milk, fresh vegetables, beef and pork from Gayoso Farms that used to be where Walmart and the Southaven Towne Center now sits in Southaven.
WHY DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS IN SOUTHAVEN?
Because my roots run deep here. My father, A.W. Bouchillon, was DeSoto County’s first Planning Director to work on planned zoning for the county. My dad ran a trucking and farming business that fell on hard times in the 1950’s. He was advised to file bankruptcy but refused to do that, choosing instead to pay off his debtors. He became known around the county as a man of integrity. He was diplomatic but he could also take the heat. My brother, Peck, became Southaven’s first postmaster and my mom later became his first employee. What initially was meant
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A BUSINESS OWNER CONSIDERING A MOVE TO SOUTHAVEN?
Become involved with the community. That’s the only way I know how to operate. If you’re in business, give back and help your community so that everyone prospers.

Safety
Teen Explorers Learn FirstHand About Police Work On any given Thursday afternoon, you’ll find a group of teenagers gathered at Snowden Grove, not hanging out mind you, but checking in to the Southaven Police Department. They are part of the department’s Law Enforcement Explorers Post. Established in 1994 by Southaven Police Lieutenant Jerald Wheeler, Explorer Post 2623 is a worksite-based program that gives teens insight into what it’s like to serve one’s community as a police officer.
S
outhaven is known for having zero tolerance on crime. That focus has helped Southaven become the eighth safest city in Mississippi. It is also the third largest city in the state, after Jackson and Gulfport. According to Mayor Darren Musselwhite, 63 percent of the city’s annual budget is dedicated to police, fire, and emergency services. It also keeps roughly 20 officers patrolling the street on any given day. Prevention is key. “Our community’s biggest desire is to live where they feel safe at home, in their business, and when shopping. So we take law enforcement seriously to assure that safety,” says Southaven Police Chief Steve Pirtle.
Teaching values
As the police department’s head of school resource officers (SRO) program, Wheeler has eyes and ears in the city’s schools, too. Six SROs help keep schools safe and officers can identify students who might be a fit for the program. A 32-year veteran of Southaven’s police force, Wheeler sees Explorers as a way of instilling important values in kids while showing them first-hand how crime doesn’t pay. Explorers, a division of the Boy Scouts of America, is a mix of job shadowing and community volunteer activities. “We fingerprint kids for a child identification program,” says Wheeler. “Explorers give out candy during the holiday parade, they help out younger kids at the fishing rodeo, and we do a safety haunted house each Halloween that more than 1,000 people attend.” Throughout the year, students also prepare for a week-long police camp each summer, structured much like a police academy. Perhaps the most important lessons come when observing the work officers do on a daily basis. “It gives kids insight, it helps them know how police are giving back to the community, and it gives them a sense of pride,” says Wheeler. Whether it’s spending time in the dispatch office hearing calls, riding along with officers on the street, or hearing from the bike patrol unit that keeps an eye out for shoplifting at area stores, Explorers hear about the challenges police work entails. “Not only does this program help build character in the participants,” observes Pirtle, “but we’ve received direct benefit, as some have gone on

to become dispatchers and patrolmen.” Wheeler says more than 20 Explorers have entered law enforcement, serving police departments in Southaven, Olive Branch, Horn Lake, Hernando, and the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department. Others have pursued different career paths in nursing, plumbing, electronics, and the military, but he believes the program helps teens consider their career potential.
Community involvement
The Explorers program isn’t the only way the Southaven Police Department knits the community together. They also host the VIP program, Volunteers in Policing, an annual, 12-week citizen police academy geared to teaching participants ages 21 plus, through lectures and facility tours, about the inner workings of the department. VIPs then provide community service, helping around the police station and at city events. Finally, once a year, Explorers go to the city cemetery to tend the graves. One in particular is of importance to the Southaven police force, that of fallen officer Lt. Billy Lance, who died in the line of duty in 1988. It’s a sober reminder that police work comes with risk, the ultimate price some pay while protecting their community. Says Wheeler, “This job teaches our students to see what life is about and have them ask themselves ‘What can I do to serve?’ ”
The program is open to any Southaven student who meets these qualifications: • Must be age 14 to 20 • Must be a resident of DeSoto County • Must be attending 9th grade • Must be a student in good standing with above-average grades
• Must be a student who shows excellent conduct in the community • Must submit a Hold Harmless and Release Form, completed and signed with parental consent • Must pass a background check

WHAT IS SOMETHING INTERESTING READERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SOUTHAVEN?
HOW MANY PEOPLE DO YOU EMPLOY?
Ours is a family-owned business with five full-time installers.
My mom and I were among the people of this city who helped run the shelter for families displaced by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. The City of Southaven designated the vacant Walmart on Stateline Road for use as a safe place for victims. Heartland Church was there and assisted with its creation. The shelter wasn’t associated with the Red Cross; it was just local people and businesses who volunteered to help feed and clothe hundreds of storm victims. Many came without any belongings or even access to their bank accounts initially. We provided a safe place to stay and hot meals each day for several months. We also assisted the National Guard as they passed through. That year, my mother was recognized as Southaven’s Woman of the Year. She received that honor again in 2013.
WHEN DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS?
Two sisters, my mother, Cherie Jones, and my aunt, Susie Nunnally, began Signs & Stuff in my aunt’s living room in 1986. They were young, stay-at-home moms looking for a way to make additional income while their kids were in school and hit on the idea of doing vinyl decals. My grandfather started Memphis Delta Tent and Awning, so that entreprenerial spirit has always been a part of our family. Over the next decade, their clientele grew. My aunt moved on in 1997, my father, Steve Jones, joined in 2000, and together my parents moved the company to a storefront in 2001. My brother Rodney Jones joined Signs & Stuff in 2003 and I (Melissa Brassfield) came onboard in 2008. We’ve been at our Goodman Road store for the past 11 years.

My brother and I joke that when you never leave the city you grew up in, you know everybody. We’re both Southaven High School grads, so we have a great list of contacts that we’ve been able to build on over the years. Our city has been growing, so there’s always new businesses needing our services. And we have a fair amount of repeat clients, like

Vocational Technology Center Gives Students Career Knowledge As new restaurants, office complexes, and industries open in DeSoto County, employers are regularly adding jobs to the local economy. Filling those jobs with skilled labor can be a challenge. Jim Flanagan, president and chief executive of the DeSoto Economic Development Council, brings in new industries which have been approved for business incentives. Having a ready pool of labor is key. That’s where the county’s two career technology centers come in, by preparing teenagers from area high schools with career exploration and entry-level job training in fields that are tied to commerce in North Mississippi.
B
T
he DeSoto County School District opened the Career Technology Center-West (CTC-West) in Horn Lake in November 2015. The $12 million facility is located at Interstate Boulevard and Nail Road and replaces a smaller vocational technical program that operated on the campus of Southaven High School. The inclusion of career and technology education is an area of emphasis that has set DeSoto County Schools apart from other districts, notes CTCWest Principal Paul Chrestman. For the 2016-2017 academic school year, 340 students from Southaven, DeSoto Central, Horn Lake, Hernando, and Lake Cormorant high schools are enrolled in nine vocational programs offered at the center, which houses shop areas, computer labs, and six classrooms. The east part of the county operates a similar technology center, CTC-East in Olive Branch, which has been training students for five years. Southaven High School Principal Shane Jones says his school, which has approximately 1,930 students, is among the center’s biggest feeders. Between 150 to 200 students are participating in the program this year, he says. Recruiters from the center come to the school each February to discuss their offerings with sophomores, who then begin the two-year track in the fall. The career technology center provides career exploration for students in grades 11 and 12, and teaches entry-level job skill training to students in their fields of study. Teens are bussed to the center from their high schools each day to spend an hourand-fifty minute period learning the curriculum and working on equipment associated with their tract. During a class that explores construction technology, students study the fundamentals of construction safety, learn math and blueprint reading, and gain the basic skills required for the carpentry, electrical, masonry, and plumbing trades. Educators worked in partnership with the Mississippi Construction Education Foundation (MCEF) to develop that

curriculum. Other fields of study include culinary arts, information technology, digital technology, health sciences, engineering, robotics and welding. “With the welding [component], students can go on and get certified and be prepared for a decent-paying job in just six to nine months after completing high school,” notes Principal Shane Jones. “Those jobs pay $15 to $16 an hour — that’s a pretty good recruiter for some.” “In the robotics program, teens are learning basic coding and robotic operations to perform certain tasks,” adds Chrestman. “These skills can be transferred to manufacturing jobs or any engineering field. They are directly transferrable to warehouse jobs as they become more automated, like Future Electronics, which is totally computer and robot-driven.” The most popular program, health sciences, gives students a sampling of health careers. Topics include safety in the workplace, infection control, health care systems, and the function of vital organs in the body. During their senior year, teens spend two hours a day shadowing doctors and nurses at Baptist Memorial HospitalDeSoto. Many find it can be an eye-opening experience. “If kids can determine what they want to study by attending this program, it gives them a leg up,” Chrestman says. The programs offered are directly tied to workforce development for DeSoto County, with business leaders in the community weighing in on the kind of job skills employers require. “We work very closely with the DeSoto Economic Development Council and the Chambers of Horn Lake, Southaven, and Olive Branch,” says Chrestman. Their offerings are also in step with academic studies and certificate programs offered at Northwest Community College. He says most students will go on to pursue higher education at a technical school, a two-year community college, or four-year university. Creating opportunities for students to learn trade skills is important to further developing the county’s workforce. Many business owners ask about the level of education available in the area and are seeking specific types of job skills. Without a strong workforce, companies take their plans — and potential jobs — elsewhere. The high school technical centers will work in tandem with a regional workforce training center that is currently under discussion for the county.
A A. The Career Technology Center offers students the opportunity to learn
trades and skills such as welding. B. B The center introduces students to an array of creative, marketable skills using professional tools and techniques such as music editing and digital illustration. C. C The robotics program not only teaches coding and building machines, but also 3D modeling and fabrication with 3D printing, planning, iteration, and experimentation. D. Many projects involve students from different programs. Here, a cupcake D competition is put on with students from the kitchen program, with sets built by students from the carpentry program, as a digital student films the results.

Bringing Organization Home
CEO Peter Felsenthal
WHAT IS YOUR LINE OF WORK?
WHY DID YOU MOVE YOUR BUSINESS TO SOUTHAVEN?
Our company is in the business of designing, manufacturing, and distributing home storage, organization, and laundry accessory products including items such as garment and shoe bags, shelving, hangers, and laundry hampers and sorters.
A tornado ravaged our facility in Earle in May 2008. We almost lost the business at that time and decided to relocate since being in Arkansas no longer met our needs. Southaven and DeSoto County won out with incentives; it made the move a seamless process. We were able to find warehouse space at Stateline Business Park where we could design and build out a great office space, one that let us keep our headquarters and distribution under one roof. We also found having access to a good pool of skilled, white-collar workers was a real plus.
HOW MANY PEOPLE DO YOU EMPLOY?
We usually have 150 staff on-hand; 100 full-time employees, plus seasonal and temporary workers that fluctuates based on business volume.
WHAT’S YOUR HOTTEST-SELLING ITEM?
WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS OF DOING BUSINESS IN SOUTHAVEN?
Shoe organizers. Shoe organization for the home is huge and we have products for shoe organization in the closet and other areas of the home.
The city is the third largest municipality in the state. But Southaven’s leadership — from municipal and county government to the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club — has shown me the meaning of community pride and the importance of investing in what you do. The city also has a valuable asset in Jim Flanagan, the president of the DeSoto County Economic Development Council, who is very strong at recruiting new industry and providing economic development for the county.
WHEN DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS?
Our family-owned business started in 1946 in Brooklyn, New York. My grandfather, Charles Whitman, was a pioneer in the closet-storage industry. He made soft textile storage products, such as garment and shoe bags and sweater organizers which were carried by department stores like Sears and Roebuck and J.C. Penney. Since it was then a cutand-sew industry, we needed to remain competitive, so my father and grandfather chose to move the business south in 1961 to Earle, Arkansas. In 2016, we celebrated our 70th anniversary, and we continue to be a fourth generation family-owned and operated business.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A BUSINESS OWNER CONSIDERING A MOVE TO SOUTHAVEN?
It depends on the kind of business you’re involved in. But it really behooves any business owner to look at North Mississippi and Southaven, as it’s a wonderful, pro-business climate right in Memphis’ backyard.

Recreation in Southaven
I
Southaven has a wide array of recreational offerings for residents. The city boasts 50 neighborhood parks, including Snowden Grove, Greenbrook, Cherry Valley, Soccer, and Central Parks. Some have scenic lakes and playgrounds perfect for walking, picnicking, or fishing. This year, several improvements were made at the outdoor facilities that will make the city even more of a draw.
Southaven Tennis Center 3750 Freeman Lane (662) 890-7275 or southaven.org
n mid-November, city leaders broke ground on the Snowden Grove Tennis Complex, a new, eightcourt tennis facility with lights, bleacher seating, and bathroom facilities. This $1.7 million expansion will increase league and tournament play, making the city a destination for players from North Mississippi and beyond. Currently the DeSoto County Tennis Association helps to coordinate these events, but the city anticipates hiring a tennis director in 2017. “Once the center is completed, we will jump feetfirst into hosting tennis leagues, tennis tournaments, and still have courts set aside for public play, says Parks and Recreation Director Wes Brown.

he stadium at Snowden Grove Park Baseball Complex also got a turn at bat, with improvements that brought more comfortable chair-back stadium seating, a stadium roof, and a press box. Snowden Grove hosts the Dizzy Dean Baseball World Series, the NABF World Series, and the USSSA World Series. But kids of all ages can get involved in baseball or softball, with youth leagues forming each spring. Softball players will find plenty of competition at Greenbrook Softball Complex, an eight-diamond, lighted field (800 Stowewood Dr.), where youth fastpitch rules. “Southaven has always been a big sports city,” says Mayor Darren Musselwhite, noting the economic benefits of having one of the largest, state-of-the-art youth baseball complexes in the nation. In addition to the baseball complex, Southaven has “Field of Dreams,” a space that encourages mentally and physically challenged children and adults to play softball in a safe environment and at no charge. Snowden Grove Park, 6208 Getwell Road • (662) 890-7275 • southaven.org or snowdengrovebaseball.com Other sports include outdoor and indoor soccer for boys and girls, played during the spring and fall, football, cheerleading, a 9-hole golf course, disc golf, and bowling at Strike Zone (3330 Pine Tar Alley, adjacent to Snowden Grove Park). Skaters can glide on ramps and rails at the Southaven Skate Park, a popular gathering place for kids into skateboarding and inline skating.
Other Great Escapes
A
s for cultural amenities, community theater in Southaven flourishes at the DeSoto Family Theatre at Landers Center, where colorful musicals like Disney’s Little Mermaid, The Lion King, and Meredith Willson’s The Music Man take center stage during the 2017 season. Live music is king at the BankPlus Amphitheater at Snowden Grove, a 10,000-seat amphitheater that hosts many big name acts yearround. Last year’s highlights included Blues Traveler with Blind Melon, Luke Bryan, and Country Music Award winner Chris Stapleton. For families in search of an easy weekend retreat, nearby Arkabutla Lake in south DeSoto County offers a chance to experience the great outdoors. This expansive park boasts Class A camping facilities for tent camping as well as modern RVs. Once you’re settled, explore the twomile nature trail or grab floaties and romp at one of the lake’s three swimming beaches. If you’re into boating, you won’t be disappointed. With eight boat-launching ramps, you can cruise in a kayak, sailboat, or motor boat. And don’t forget your fishing gear, since anglers here have been known to reel in huge crappie. Arkabutla is ranked among the top five crappie fishing lakes in the country, but you’ll also find largemouth and white bass, bream, and channel catfish. In addition, the park’s 30,000 acre wildlife management area is open to deer and turkey hunting. If your family loves watching professional basketball or hockey, exciting league play takes place at the 10,000-seat Landers Center, home of the Memphis Grizzlies Development League and Mississippi RiverKings, a professional minor league ice hockey team. The NBA D-League will play 24 home games, and the Southern Professional Hockey League team plays 32 home games each season. Want to get in on the fun? Why I Retired to Southaven
Life After Retirement Phillip Schoonover might be retired, but you wouldn’t know it by his schedule. This 56-year-old granddad is a recent transplant to Southaven, retiring here five years ago after winding up a 30-year career in the trucking industry with MS Carriers in Memphis.
H
e and his wife Patsy moved to Southaven to be closer to their son and four grandkids. In fact, they bought a home in Pinehurst just two doors down from their crew. “The kids are involved with sports at school, so we’re all in that,” says Schoonover. “It just seemed like a strong sense of community here.” You often hear residents talk about that strong sense of community — it’s one of Southaven’s assets. But there are other qualities the Schoonovers find attractive, too. Southaven is certified as a quality retirement city by the American Association of Retirement Communities and Hometown Mississippi Retirement. To receive that designation, applicants must pass a rigorous screening process that examines issues of importance to retirees: Affordable cost of living, quality medical care, low taxes, a low crime rate, and educational, cultural, and volunteer opportunities, all make this city a great place to retire.

to get limbered up at Tai Chi, aerobics, Zumba, and yoga classes. Others enjoy playing games of ping pong, mahjongg, and canasta. All of this and more is offered on a weekly basis to Forever Young members. “Many people lose their spouse and don’t have anyone to do things with,” says Senior Services Director Ann Hamblin. “So when they start interacting here, whether it’s playing cards or line dancing, they start making friends and getting out on their own again.” Retirees join Forever Young from Southaven as well as DeSoto County and other communities across North Mississippi. The program began 11 years ago with just 30 members. Today, approximately 3,800 seniors participate annually. As for the most popular offerings? Line dancing is right up there, says Hamblin, with classes and dances offered regularly each month. Special events include crafts, meals at area restaurants, holiday parties, and group trips, including a 10-day vacation to Italy this spring. To become a member of Forever Young, participants must be a Mississippi resident and 60 years of age or older. For details, call (662) 895-1138 or visit southaven.org.
Once the Schoonovers got settled, Phillip quickly became involved in the community by lending a hand to local political campaigns and putting in volunteer hours with organizations like the Healing Hearts Child Advocacy Center. He says he’s always been handy and when word got out that he was a good sign builder, “that made me quite popular!” Schoonover says with a laugh. He soon found himself pitching in with Darren Musselwhite’s 2013 campaign for mayor, organizing poll watches and planting the signs he built. Once the campaign season ended, his ties to city hall led him to Anthony Hicks and his organization, DeSoto Youth Solutions. This nonprofit is dedicated to helping teenage boys get out of gangs. Volunteers like Schoonover provide encouragement and assistance as teens learn alternative ways of building community. “These boys were hungry for leadership; that’s what a gang offers. But the love and direction Anthony provides works in a totally different way,” says Schoonover. With the organization’s help, many have left gang activity for good. Schoonover finds giving of his time to such worthwhile activities is making his retirement years meaningful.
Easy, affordable living
Mike Reaves and his wife Ludis were looking to downsize from the expansive family home and acreage they’d enjoyed in Olive Branch. They were driving through Southaven one day when they happened on the entrance to Snowden Grove 55 Plus, one of several gated communities in the city for residents 55 and older. Reaves, 71, noticed a couple of guys in golf carts, “So I pulled up to talk to them and I told them, ‘I’m tired of doing yard work!’ One of the guys responded, ‘Heck, I don’t even own a gas can!’ “ After several conversations with residents there, Reaves and Ludis soon realized this was exactly the kind of lifestyle they’d been searching for. At Snowden Grove 55 Plus, homeowners have affordable, handsomely appointed homes on small lots and pay monthly dues that cover landscaping and outdoor maintenance. Once they bought their home, they quickly became part of a close-knit community; retirement in this Southaven neighborhood “is like being back in college. Your house is your dorm room and when you go outside, you’re on your hall with all your friends,” says Reaves, who now serves as Snowden Grove’s homeowner association president.
Independent & Assisted Living Options in Southaven
Retirement savings
In buying their home, Reaves discovered that Southaven makes retirement more attractive with significant tax incentives. Residents 65 and older are exempt from paying tax up to $75,000 of the market value of a home. Qualified retirement income is exempt from Mississippi state tax, as is social security, regardless of one’s total income. What’s more, prescription drugs, residential utilities, and healthcare services all fall under sales-tax exemption, which can help make the cost of living here surprisingly affordable for seniors. Reaves says he finds the mayor and board of aldermen to be “progressive and forward-thinking,” and he likes that Baptist DeSoto Hospital, which offers excellent medical care, is just a short drive from his home. So, too, are numerous private practice, dental, and healthcare specialists. Reaves will tell you, downsizing never felt so right.

Faith and Community
Accepting the Call When Southaven teens come home and tell their parents they’re headed to a house party, moms might wonder what’s up. But in today’s church vernacular, a house party is short-hand for hanging out and in the case of Life Fellowship Church, finding fellowship with other youth. The parties, in church members’ homes, provide a relaxed environment where kids from grades 6 to 12 can make new friends, play games like corn hole and foosball, and consider their faith journey.
F
for real connections in a world where socializing often takes place online. Life Fellowship, which operates three church campuses in Southaven, Olive Branch, and Walls, is a non-denominational church and now reaches 150 to 160 youth. The congregation in Southaven numbers 1,300 members. “A couple of things kids are looking for in every person, regardless of their background or religion: They’re looking to connect with God and eternity, they’re looking for authenticity by trying to see through the hype for something real, and they’re looking for relationships,” says Salsman. He hopes the Life Fellowship ministry can help teens grow those relationships, both with each other and with Christ.
ollowing game time, student pastor John Salsman gathers the youth together and leads a full service. Afterward, the kids divide into Student Life Groups (according to their age) to discuss topics like relationships, teen challenges, and how Bible study and prayer can provide guideposts for a more meaningful, enriched life. “In our series, Essentials, we talk about what people need most to follow and grow their relationship with Christ,” notes Salsman. The 23-year-old accepted the call to Life Fellowship Church in February 2015 after graduating from Highlands College in Birmingham, Alabama. He was hired expressly to reach out to middle and high school students as a way of engaging and ministering to teens hungry 34

Connecting Through Faith Many people in Southaven connect with other believers and build community through their faith. In fact, Southaven is home to 100 houses of worship, representing a wide range of denominations. People express their belief by worshiping together and fellowshipping at church activities, but residents show their commitment to service in other ways, too.

with shampoo, detergent, and other personal care items. And she often receives calls from area companies like Helen of Troy. They wanted to donate pallets of self-care products they produce: heaters, fans, blow dryers, and curling irons. It requires work: Lining up a trailer and driver to move the pallets from the company’s warehouse to Stateline Road, asking more time from volunteers, and rallying her distribution network to move the products. But James says it’s worth the effort, “We never say no to donations. This is so much bigger than we are.”
ome get involved by volunteering with social service organizations like HeartLand Hands, a nonprofit food pantry that opened in November 2006 to feed the less fortunate in Southaven. (The pantry was an outgrowth of a ministry started by HeartLand Church.) When the organization first launched, Executive Director Connie James says there were just four volunteers and 10 recipients. Today, 50 volunteers from 20 different churches gather Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to distribute food to more than 600 families from across the county. In 10 years time, HeartLand Hands has grown to become one of the largest food pantries in DeSoto County. The pantry is stocked with canned goods, peanut butter, paper products, cleaning supplies, even fresh produce, all given away to those in need. Individuals who qualify for assistance must be Mississippi residents living below the poverty line. Recipients receive $500 worth of food per month for up to six months. James is among the organization’s volunteers. Though she oversees an extensive program and is significantly knitted into the food distribution network of North Mississippi, she receives no salary and uses space given by HeartLand Church in the former Walmart building on Stateline Road. HeartLand Hands offers emergency food assistance to those who come to their facility each week. Fourteen other social services also rely on HeartLand’s assistance, nonprofits like House of Grace, a refuge for women and children who’ve been abused, and Precious in Pink, a prison ministry program for women. In addition, the nonprofit supplements food banks and 21 additional food pantries that, in turn, distribute food to hungry residents across North Mississippi, including Tunica, Tupelo, Tate, and Marshall counties. “We’re touching the lives of some 20,000 people a month with food,” says James. For the year 2016, HeartLand Hands will have distributed $8 million worth of food. “Everything we give away is donated to us,” explains James. “Our administrative costs are less than one-half of 1 percent. Almost all of our proceeds go back into the program.” Financial contributions for the program come from individuals, churches, and local businesses. No cost is ever accessed to clients. In addition to food, the organization distributes hygiene bags at Christmas, filled by employees at Baptist Memorial Hospital DeSoto,

a new adventure for both, it’s been a fun ride. “I’ve always enjoyed working with kids and having this store, I can help support my wife and her dream,” says Jim Cross. You can treat yourself to a relaxing spa experience at Belle Ross (5960 Getwell Road, Suite 101), where owner and stylist Jessica Marx makes everyone feel at home in her elegant, sun-filled salon. Pampering here is a must. Whether it’s a full-body massage, maniand pedicure, or a stylish new cut, Bella Ross offers salon services second to none. If you’re looking for a distinctive gift for that new bride or birthday celebration, you’ll want to pay a visit Ultimate Gifts (3075 Goodman Road, Suite 16). Long-time residents might remember Ultimate Car Wash and Gifts that was located at Airways and Goodman. Originally owned by Deb and Garnett West, the gift store
f you love shopping for vintage goods, you’ll discover a treasure trove of items for your home at Abandoned Treasures as well as Southaven Antiques and Gifts on Stateline Road West. These two sizable shops have a delightful assortment of antiques and collectibles with prices that fit most any budget. For boutique shopping, continue to Getwell or Goodman Roads where a variety of specialty stores provide a wealth of goods, some produced by local artisans. Let’s Paint (3334 Goodman Road East), owned by Jim and Sarah Cross, gives customers a chance to tap their own inner artist. The studio, which the couple bought two years ago from previous owners, hosts painting parties, as well as creative, affordable birthday parties. Sarah, 30, taught art in DeSoto public schools and Jim, 32, served in the military. While owning a small business was 36

was an outgrowth of gift items the car wash carried for customers to browse as their car was being detailed. Southaven native Lauren McKenzie worked for the couple in 2006 as a high school student and eventually returned to manage the store after graduating from the University of Mississippi. By that time, the couple had moved Ultimate Gifts to its current location and McKenzie had the opportunity to make the dream of a lifetime come true by purchasing the store from her former employers — at age 25. “I never thought I’d have a job I love everyday,” she says of her adventure as a shop owner. “It’s fun to go to market and see what’s trending.” Even better, her sister also owns a gift store in Marion, Arkansas, so the two often compare notes about merchandising, new product lines, and what’s hot in their respective markets. McKenzie, now 27, focuses on carrying an array of gifts from collegiate items, Vera Bradley, Kendra Scott and Ronaldo Jewelry, to a baby section and even a wedding registry. Local artwork and other Mississippi-made products such as pottery and gourmet foods have become a store staple. For that dressy occasion, step into Lola B Boutique (5847 Getwell Road), North Mississippi’s premiere formal and party attire shop. You’ll find the latest in elegant, beaded gowns by Sherri Hill, Rachel Allan, and Johnathan Kayne. Owner Lori Brassfield-Sanders says one of her core

values as a businesswoman is giving back to the community. “We host charity events throughout the year, and sponsor Miss Amazing, a pageant for girls and women with disabilities,” says Lori. “So many women and teens volunteer from the Southaven community to make these events a success, we never have to solicit for help!” If you come to shop in Southaven, you won’t leave empty-handed. Come see for yourself.

outhaven has long attracted shoppers from around Mississippi, but in November 2015, the city upped its game with the opening of Tanger Outlets Southaven. In 2016, residents and visitors from across the Mid-South made Southaven a destination to shop the 75 name-brand stores found at this upscale retail mecca. Designer and wellknown names like Michael Kors, Abercrombie and Fitch, Maurice’s and J. Crew, Coach, Tommy Hilfiger, and Banana Republic are just a sample of the high-end clothiers you’ll find here. And let’s not forget a most delightful doughnut and cup of gourmet coffee from Krispy Kreme! Tanger, a North Carolina-based leader in outlet mall development, provides a huge economic bump to the Southaven economy, says Mayor Darren Musselwhite. “This is one of the highest-quality developments in the history of our city and will have a tremendously positive economic
impact with sales tax revenue, tourism revenue, and jobs,” said Musselwhite to The Commercial Appeal. Thus far, the center has produced 1,000 new jobs with more expected as several other nearby parcels on Church Road await development. The city anticipates earning $7.5 million annually in sales revenue. Shopping destinations like Tanger don’t just bring business to individual stores, however. Carmen Kyle, executive director of the Southaven Chamber of Commerce, says there’s an economic ripple effect that takes place as visitors spend money in neighboring restaurants and discover the city’s additional amenities. Landers Center, the multipurpose arena, is home to the Memphis Grizzlies’ NBA-D League and Mississippi RiverKings hockey team. In addition, Landers Center hosts dozens of concerts, family events, trade shows, and conventions throughout the year. The BankPlus Amphitheater at Snowden Grove, a live outdoor music venue, is home to the Southaven Springfest and a summer concert series. Tanger, located at the junction of I-55/69 and Church Road, is an attractive addition to Southaven’s shopping offerings and joins the ever popular Southaven Towne Center on Southcrest Parkway, an upscale, open-air shopping center anchored by Dillard’s, JCPenney, and home appliance and electronics giant HHGregg.

Dining Delight

everal new dining destinations opened in 2016 that are sure to gain a following. STEAK by Melissa (4975 Pepper Chase Drive) a high-end restaurant, is owned by Pitmaster Melissa Cookston, restaurateur and author of two cookbooks. Her latest, Smokin’ Hot in the South: New Grilling Recipes from the Winningest Woman in Barbecue, won the National Barbecue News Book of the Year Award for 2016. Cookston’s love of grilling goes back to her childhood — she was born and raised in Greenville, Mississippi — and while she has run three Memphis Barbecue Company restaurants (one in Horn Lake), STEAK is her first offering in Southaven. You’ll find the interior stylish yet comfortable. And a belief in cooking from scratch means everything, from blackened filets to mac and cheese, is second to none. Another winner is AC’s Steakhouse Pub in the Shops of Southaven (3964 Goodman Road), a

relaxed bar and grill known for its piled-high reuben sandwiches and juicy, 20-ounce rib-eyes. Co-owners Aaron Hahn and Cindy Borkowski met while working in the casino industry before joining forces to open their first venture together, AC Steakhouse in Hernando. The restaurant gained a steady following and led to opening the new Southaven location. The restaurant began serving customers in April and is already doing a brisk lunch and dinner business. Still hungry? Other popular fine dining options include Mesquite Chop House and the newly renovated Akita Sushi and Hibachi Steakhouse. If you’re looking for down-home goodness, drop by Dale’s Restaurant (1226 Main Street), where a classic Southern meat-and-three is always on the menu. Don’t miss the chicken and dumplings or fried catfish, some of their best-selling dishes. While Southaven’s oldest, family-owned eatery is now being run by the third generation, Dale still stops in for lunch to swap stories with the regulars.
