WELCOME Dear Tennis Friends,
W
elcome to the 2013 U.S. National Indoor Tennis Championships. This year’s tournament brings a new name, changes to the stadium court, the very best field in history and some new fan experiences. The first change is a return to the tournament’s original name—the U.S. National Indoor Tennis Championships. This name re-establishes the tradition and history of the tournament from its beginnings in Memphis. When you enter the stadium you’ll notice the next big change. The bleacher seats have been removed and replaced with chair seats. The new seats will provide fans a much more comfortable position from which to view the exciting matches. You will also notice, on the west end of the stadium, a new feature under the scoreboard, The Club Lounge. This area will provide food and beverage service inside the stadium court while watching the matches. On court you will see the strongest men’s field we have had in Memphis. Eleven of the top 30 men in the world will compete in the singles draw and the world number one team and current Olympic gold Medalists, the Bryan Brothers, will head the doubles draw. John Isner (13) heads the field of singles stars along with two time finalist Milos Raonic (15) and three time champion Tommy Haas (21). The newcomers to Memphis, Marin Cilic (14), Kei Nishikori (18) and Alex Dolgopolov (20) will provide the excitement we have come to expect. The women’s field is even stronger than we have had in the past with our last player accepted

20 spots higher than in previous years. Our field is headed by former top 12 player Sabine Lisicki and defending champion Sofia Arvidsson as well as 2011 Champion Magdalena Rybarikova. Be sure to watch for the youngest player in the field, 17 year old American Vicki Duval; we are expecting the Memphis courts to be a showcase for this rising talent. For the first time ever the tournament will start off with Mixed Doubles action on Monday night at 7 pm. Former Memphis Champions Lindsay Davenport, Mark Philippoussis, and Sam Querrey will take to the court with young star Vicki Duval to show Memphis some top-level mixed doubles action. Off the court we have new events for the fans to enjoy as well. Wednesday is our Ladies’ Day Luncheon with some of the top players making an appearance. Thursday is a BBQ and Bourbon evening with two Memphis in May BBQ champions providing a tasting of their specialties. And, on Sunday before finals begin we will have a Jazz Brunch to get you in a festive mood for the last day of great tennis. The Racquet Club of Memphis is proud to continue to bring world-class tennis to Memphis. We are looking forward to another exciting event and hope you enjoy every part of your experience. Sincerely,
Peter Lebedevs Tournament Director US National Indoor Tennis Championships

In the beginning, Billy Dunavant brought professional tennis to Memphis and called it the U.S. National Indoor Championships. From Volvo and Kroger to Regions Morgan Keegan, over the past thirty-seven years Memphis’ professional tennis tournament has held many monikers. Regardless of the title, the tournament has made it tradition to provide players and fans with an experience that simply doesn’t happen at any other professional sporting event in the nation. This year the tournament is returning to its roots for good. At the core, it’s always been the U.S. National Indoor Championships; it’s just official again.

Victoria Azarenka
In its maiden year (1977), Bjorn Borg captured the U.S. National Indoor title and went on to finish the year as the world’s best player. This wasn’t the last time a U.S. National Indoor winner would end the year with the top ranking. Both fans and pros took notice. “It was absolutely unbelievable that this small venue had more year-end number one champions than any other tournament in the world; including grand slams, until 2000” said former Racquet Club and National Indoor owner Mac Winker. The fan experience began to crescendo with every tennis star witnessed. It became expected, tradition if you will, that every spring tennis lovers would see the top tennis players in the world compete in the Bluff City. “It took the city by storm. They just really grabbed hold of it,” longtime tournament director Tommy Buford said. “It didn’t take long for the world to realize what an event we had here.” As tournament director, Buford was responsible for recruiting the best players to come to the National Indoor. In 1978, his second year on the job, he recruited the world’s second-best player in an interesting location. “I was in the restroom at Madison Square Garden during the Masters when I ran into Guillermo Vilas and his agent. We got to talking and they stood right there while I wrote out a contract on a paper bag,” Buford said. “They signed it and consequently Vilas came to the tournament that year. That could never happen now.” In a 2001 interview Billy Dunavant told Memphis magazine that the level of service and hospitality Buford provided players was instrumental to the tournament’s early success. “In those days it wasn’t always the money. How you treated [the players] was really important,” Dunavant told the magazine. “Tommy had a premier reputation of being a guide to the players, really respected, and would do exactly what he told them he would do.” The practice of extreme hospitality was passed down from Buford to Winker and to today’s tournament director, Peter Lebedevs and has become another part of the National Indoor’s tradition. The first-class experience draws fans and pros back each year. “It might be the friendliest tournament we play. From the tournament staff, local tennis fans and just the city in general,” said U.S. National Indoor doubles champion Bob Bryan. “Mike and I always look forward to the southern hospitality and level of class provided by the Club.” The National Indoor always attracts the top American players, but it also has a knack for introducing some of the greener talent on the ATP World Tour. Top seeded John Isner began playing the National Indoor each spring when he was just a teenager. “It’s sort of like visiting your home town. The fans are so loyal and they’ve gotten to see me grow from the beginning of my career to today,” Isner said of the annual tournament. The women’s event also has a history of showcasing future superstars. In 2004, 17-year-old Maria Sharapova played the National Indoor then went on to become

Wimbledon Champion that July. Victoria Azarenka defeated Caroline Wozniacki to win the singles championship in 2009 then, ironically, went on to win the doubles championship that same year with Wozniacki as her partner. Both players have landed themselves in the numberone spot since. It has become tradition, that when it comes to top-ten tennis talent, Memphis fans will have the opportunity to say, “I saw them play when they were on their way up.” During the Nineties, the tournament decided to take on a philanthropic role and partner with local St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Long before the ATP initiated its ACES for Charity program, the National Indoor recognized its ability to make a difference for a worthy cause. As the largest not-for-profit in Memphis and the hospital’s dedication to finding a cure for childhood cancers, it was a logical choice for St. Jude to be the tournament’s charity. “It was such a magical time when the relationship with St. Jude began,” said Winker. “I’ve seen the impact the children have on the players and it’s pretty amazing.” In 2003, after an injury caused Anna Kournikova to withdraw from the event, she still attended the National Indoor to make a special charity donation to the hospital. She continues to participate in charity tennis events to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Each year, players schedule time to visit the hospital and look forward to meeting the young patients. Throughout the years, many pros have donated to St. Jude because of the personal impact visiting the hospital had on them. “I always enjoy playing in Memphis. Aside from it just being an inviting tournament for American players, the relationship the tournament has with St. Jude is a really special one,” said Mardy Fish. “Visiting the children is always so inspiring and we all try to make the trip to visit when our schedule allows.” Allowing players the opportunity to use their star power to impact the lives of children has become a National Indoor tradition. In the past thirty-seven years, the sport of tennis has seen many changes. While it has adapted with the times, the U.S. National Indoor has maintained the elements that make it the most traditional tournament on the tour. “As the tournament looks to the future, we want to provide fans and players with the best tennis experience possible,” said tournament director Peter Lebedevs. “A large part of the experience stems from traditions that span well over three decades, and begins with reclaiming the U.S. National Indoor Championships name.” Between the first-class private-club experience, old fashioned player hospitality and philanthropic endeavors, and showcasing a level of tennis that can’t be seen within a 400 mile radius, the U.S. National Indoor has created a tennis tradition in the Mid-South that will be carried on for years to come. ❍

HARDER BETTER FASTER STRONGER IN THE 2011 FINALS MATCH BETWEEN ANDY RODDICK and Milos Raonic at the U.S. National Indoor Championships, Memphis tennis enthusiasts saw a different kind of tennis player. At the time, Roddick was the world record holder for the fastest serve recorded (155 mph), but Raonic displayed an unmistakable power serve – making the win for Roddick challenging.

“It’s a scary thought that he’s got a ways to improve,” Mardy Fish said of Raonic that year. The thought may be scary for Raonic’s opponents, but it’s exciting for tennis fans. Once again in last year’s final match, Raonic’s power serve against 2012 champion Jurgen Melzer made the crowd take notice – and the tournament management take action. “It’s for safety,” said Tournament Director Peter Lebedevs, of the six-foot baseline extension new to the 2013 court. “Melzer was so far back returning his shots that he almost hit the ball kids and linemen. The game has changed. Fifteen years ago

serves weren’t as big and fast as they are now.” Australia’s Samuel Groth proved Lebedev’s theory to be true last May when he hit an ace recorded at 163.4 mph in a match in South Korea. Groth hit two other serves recorded at 157.5 mph and 158.9 mph in the same match. What is giving professionals today an apparent edge over the champions of yesteryear? Maybe the answer lies in height, strength, better equipment, or a combination of the three. Environmental factors likely play a role in the growing size of players. As a species we are growing taller than decades before, but likely it isn’t a result of evolution. Most geneticists

believe that the improvement in childhood nutrition has been the most important factor in allowing humans to increase so dramatically in stature. Before Pete Sampras, few men’s professionals measured taller than 5’11” – the height of Bjorn Borg, Andre Agassi and John McEnroe. Rod Laver, star player during the Sixties and still considered to be one of the greatest tennis players of all time, was a mere 5’8”. Today, only two players in the Emirates ATP rankings — DavidFerrer and Janko Tipsarevic — measure less than six feet. John Isner is a towering 6’9”, Raonic comes in at 6’5”, Juan Martin Del Potro is 6’6” and Ivo Karlovic is an astounding 6’10”. With the increasing size of professionals, physical strength is in demand. Most top professionals have a personal trainer in addition to their coach. These trainers specifically design the player’s training schedule, which often includes tennis footwork drills, plyometrics and even a comprehensive weight training program. Roger Federer and Bjorn Borg have nearly an identical forehand technique. So what makes Borg’s topspin incomparable to Federer’s? Simply put – the racket. Wooden rackets were nine inches wide and twenty-seven inches long. Today’s carbon fiber composite racket is still twenty-seven inches in length, but about ten to twelve inches wide. Not to mention the racket is lighter, which does require players to swing harder, but the result is a topspin that simply can’t be achieved with a wooden

racket. The introduction of polyester strings around ten years ago is another contributing factor to the topspin speeds seen from today’s player. Last year, tennis equipment manufacturer, Wilson, released a line of rackets with “Spin Effect” technology. There are fewer cross strings than vertical, allowing for more spin with no change in swing. Expected to be released this year, Babolat’s Play & Connect racket provides instant data on the user’s power, spin and consistency. With players becoming bigger and stronger, new technology in equipment is becoming more important for players to remain competitive. “We attract some of the top powerhouse players to the U.S. National Indoor Championships. Just as the racket companies and personal trainers have to adjust to the players’ changing needs, so do tournaments,” said Lebedevs. “Expect to see some power tennis this week because the players now have the room they require to play their big game.” ❍

or twelve years the U.S. National Indoor Championships have been the only combined men and women’s indoor tennis event in the world. This year the final champion will emerge from some of the world’s greatest female players and join the ranks of Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, Lindsay Davenport and Victoria Azarenka. Throughout the years, Memphis has been honored to experience some of the greatest players women’s tennis has ever known. Beginning with the event’s first winner, Lisa Raymond, in 2002, fans were privy to experience a world-class female athlete while sitting mere feet away from the court. Ranked as the top doubles player in 2000, Raymond has eleven grand slam doubles titles, yet her success in Memphis came in the singles field. She enjoyed the event so much; she decided to take home the top prize again in 2003 and quickly became a fan favorite. Vera Zvonareva took top honors in both ’04 and ’05 and exposed U.S. National Indoor fans to their first up-and-comer winner. In her first Memphis finals appearance, Zvonareva trailed two-time champion and now hometown favorite Raymond 5–2 in the third set, before saving three match points and winning the last five games of the match to win the title, 4–6, 6–4, 7–5. A mere six months later, she partnered with
Bob Bryan to win the mixed doubles competition at the U.S. Open. Since her wins in Memphis, Zvonareva has danced in and out of the top-10 and was ranked as high as world no. 2 at the end of 2010. While not a household name, Sofia Arvidsson has her own parking spot at the Racquet Club of Memphis for her U.S. National Indoor wins in both 2006 and 2012. Arvidsson is a specialist at this tournament, with three of her four WTA finals appearances taking place on the stadium court in Memphis. She was runner up to Sharapova in 2010. Fans can imagine the special meaning Memphis and U.S. National Indoor holds to Arvidsson. “I just love this place. It’s my second home,” Arvidsson said after her 2012 win. “The fans here are great and the tournament takes such good care of the players, so it makes us all feel good. I didn’t expect to win when I came here, so it’s the best feeling.” The next four years of the women’s event at the U.S. National Indoor Championships were dominated by star power. After being side-lined for over a year due to a wrist injury, Venus Williams chose Memphis to make her comeback in 2008. After eliminating Caroline Wozniak in the second round, Williams went on to defeat top-seeded Shahar Peer of Israel 6-1, 6-1.
“I just love this place. It’s my second home,” Arvidsson said after her 2012 win.
Proving that nothing is guaranteed on the court, Williams went down in the first round of the 2008 tournament to 17-year-old qualifier Petra Kvitova Sofia Arvidsson 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Fans along with Kvitova, Williams and fellow players were all stunned. But Victoria Azarenka for Kvitova, the win wasn’t a chance success. She went on to become a top ten player and a Wimbledon champion. “It was a huge shock when Venus lost in the first round to somebody I didn’t know,” said 2008 champion Lindsay Davenport. “You know I definitely felt much more confident, getting that win. The draw obviously opened up a little bit for me, and I just took advantage of it.” With the win came Davenport’s 55th career title and fans got to witness a bit of history in the making. She surpassed one of her idols, Monica Seles, in WTA title wins and to date is fourth-ranked in this achievement. If there were ever a future star to watch in Memphis, it was 2010 singles and doubles champion Victoria Azarenka. Today she is the highest ranked woman in the sport, but then, Azarenka had just earned her first career
“It’s been a fantastic and memorable run,” said Peter Lebedevs, Tournament Director.

title at the Brisbane International. It was the kind of finals match tournaments dream of – both top seeds and close friends; the excitement surrounding the match was an all time high. After defeating future world no. 1, Caroline Wozniacki 6-1, 6-3, and composing herself from her tears of joy, the two friends teamed up to win the doubles event. The buzz surrounding the 2010 U.S. National Indoor Championships women’s event was more like a roar. Few remembered this was Maria Sharapova’s second appearance in the bluff city; as she was a relative unknown when she made it to the semi final match in 2004. Three grand slam and seventeen WTA titles later, she was back, and she didn’t drop a set the entire tournament. Gracious as always, Sharapova visited patients at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital during her visit and signed autographs for fans whenever possible. Magdalena Rybarikova took the title in 2011 after Canadian Rebecca Marino retired due to an injury, and Arvidsson received top honors again at last year’s event. The final victor of the women’s U.S. National Indoor Championships will be crowned this week, and the city of Memphis will bid farewell to the ladies. “It’s been a fantastic and memorable run,” said Peter Lebedevs, Tournament Director. “We’re all sad to see the women’s event come to an end, but I couldn’t be prouder that we got to introduce the Mid South to some of the best players the sport has ever known.” ❍
