SHAIKHANI GROUP

Shaikhani Group surges on inherent strengths, symbiosis and synergies Business Centre in Dubai Silicon Oasis, all of which are symbolic of the developer’s trademark commitment to quality and distinction.

From its modest beginnings as the Memon Real Estate Brokerage Agency in the bustling Pakistani commercial port city of Karachi in 1978, the Dubai-headquartered, highly diversified, multinational, multibilliondollar-turnover Shaikhani Group has catapulted into the frontlines as one of the UAE’s prominent business conglomerates. In this exclusive interview, Mahmood Abubaker Shaikhani, Group Managing Director and a scion of the namesake family, walks us through the corporation’s almost four-decade story of success and progress. From his scenic 8th floor office wit h a commanding view of the Business Bay, one of Dubai’s fastest growing business enclaves, Mahmood Abubaker Shaikhani, surveys the constantly changing skyline yonder. “The landscape is in a constant state of flux,” he states pointing to the panoramic view of high-rise buildings rising phoenix-like from construction sites in the vicinity on a hot, wind-swept afternoon. Mahmood does keep close tabs on developments in the neighbourhood. After all, real estate and properties development constitutes the flagship b usiness o f t he e ver-expanding Shaikhani Group and has played its part in changing the contours and skyline of some of Dubai’s plush and fast-developing localities.

PERSONAL IMPRINT

PREMIUM PROPERTIES The property development arm of the eponymous Shaikhani Group is a leading player in the region’s real estate space offering a diversified portfolio of premium property projects. Given its prominence and track record in this segment, the developer’s strengths lie in its core competencies including acquisition, design and development, consultancy, leasing and management of properties. Leveraging the Shaikhani Group’s extensive real estate development experience, its UAE portfolio comprises of prestigious residential projects in Dubai International City, Dubai Sports City, Jumeirah Village, and its inaugural commercial venture – Cambridge

A second-generation Shaikhani, Mahmood is the third son of the visionary founder and family patriarch Abu Baker Shaikhani – a successful entrepreneur and politician who first came to the UAE to set up his business in 1993. The Shaikhanis are Memons, a traditional commercial Muslim community straddling the states of Gujarat, India and Sindh, Pakistan. He recounts, with candour, his own induction into the business, paying tribute to his farsighted father for putting him through the paces of the labyrinthine corporate world. “Whilst studying for my Bachelor’s degree in London my father used to delibera- tely send me only a limited sum of money, so I was compelled to take up menial and ad-hoc jobs, even working as a door-to-door salesman for sustenance and to boost my allowances,” he reminisces. GRASS-ROOTS APPROACH The work ethic and hands-on approach were to pay rich dividends when Mahmood re-turned to Dubai in 2001 after acquiring his educational business qualifications from London’s Metropolitan University. “When I got to the airconditioned office on my first day at work well-attired in a prim and proper business suit and tie, my father politely asked me to change into coveralls and uniforms worn by shop-floor personnel." He then directed me to the Rubber World Industries factory, leading manufacturers of the rubber insulation Gulf-O-Flex in the GCC and South-East Asia, located in the industrial area of Ajman. There I went through the paces working under the Operations Manager. I toiled alongside my colleagues in the plant’s premises braving stifling heat, grime and hard hours of manual labour and the strong odour of chemicals,” he recalls.

SHAIKHANI GROUP REAL ESTATE RECKONING Real estate will continue to be the bedrock of the Shaikhani Group, asserts Mahmood. “Through Shaikhani Developments, our dual property development arm, over AED 2 billion have been invested and allocated in projects that collectively exceed over 30,000 units worldwide,” states Mahmood. Recently the Shaikhani Group unveiled ‘Vision 2025’, an ambitious strategy that will leapfrog the conglomerate’s ranking several notches up with the expected development of the prestigious Gardenia Residency and another luxurious project in Arjaan, Dubai. Also in the pipeline are developments in the emerging Dubai South and in the mixed-use areas adjacent to the Dubai Expo 2020 site where construction is expected to gather pace in the run-up to the Exposition. Rubber World Industries is only one of 12 operating units of its kind internationally. Another manufacturing facility will go operational shortly in Sri Lanka to serve the growing demand in the South Indian subcontinent and South-East Asia and a new multi-million dollar project will soon take place in Mexico to cater to the North, Central and Latin American markets. MULTI PRODUCTS PORTFOLIO In addition to real estate and rubber manufacturing, the highly diversified G roup h as interests in a wide spectrum of other industries that include contracting; project management; transportation, supply chain and logistics; automobiles; hotels, food franchising, call centres, IT and BPOs providing related services to leading global energy service providers and their consumers. The foray into the food franchising sector marks the newest rollout of the Group’s everburgeoning portfolio. Mahmood revealed that the Group had recently paid GBP 2 million to acquire the franchising rights of two leading UK food franchisers – Go-Grill and Rio Peri Peri, expected to be launched shortly in the UAE.

now, helped establish schools and computer institutes with subsidized fees, mosques, hospitals that offer subsidized rates for the general public and free treatment for registered and homeless people. It has also constructed units with self-generating income facilities and housing projects that presently shelters over 3,200 families. Through the World Memon Organization (WMO) of which Mahmood is the General Secretary and Trustee and other NGOs, the Shaikhani Foundation has provided extensive relief services and humanitarian aid to the victims of the vicious earthquake that rattled Northern Pakistan in October 2005 and floods that ravaged the eastern and central regions of the country in July-August 2010. Despite being born into relative affluence, Mahmood remains very practical, down-toearth, involved and committed to preserving the entrepreneurial spirit that was the trigger for the business in the first place. His advice to budding entrepreneurs? – Stay focused and stay the course! Beneficial advice from a mentor who has seen entrepreneurial success up close and personal and learned lessons the hard way under the tutelage of his illustrious father!

DR. KAYLE AESTHETIC CLINIC

Beautification with an artistic touch Nestled in a striking, sprawling gated villa with well-manicured lawns and a backyard in the swank, placid Umm Suqeim-Jumeirah neighbourhood on Dubai’s scenic Al Wasl Road, Dr. Kayle Aesthetic Clinic, is the place to go to for beauty-enhancing plastic and cosmetic surgery, skincare, facial and related body treatment. Dr. Dany Kayle, founder of his namesake holistic, well-equipped, Dr. Kayle Aesthetic Clinic, is a highly qualified, certified, accomplished, well-regarded plastic surgeon with a good track record. He also wears another hat. He loves painting, which also helps him unwind and finds it the perfect complement and antidote to his demanding profession. A graduate of the prestigious American University of Beirut (AUB), the highly experienced and respected Dr. Kayle possesses good professional qualifications and credentials including membership of the coveted ISAPS (International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery), the 1970-established, world’s leading professional body for board-certified aesthetic plastic surgeons founded under a charter signed at the United Nations. ART AFICIONADO Despite his professional accomplishments and long-standing practice spanning almost 17 years in the UAE alone, Dr. Kayle, a selfconfessed fan of Rembrandt and French Impressionist painter Monet, has a genial, intense demeanour. The staircase and his second level office are adorned with beautiful works of art and personal hand paintings, a reflection of his keen interest in the surreal world of fine art. “Plastic surgery is my day job, my professional mainstay but I am also an artist and a painter at heart. I am passionate about painting and these are some of my personal creations,” he says pointing out to a raft of framed paintings that deck his office. “I chose to go down this path because

it reconciles my passions of head, heart and hands,” he says with an affable smile. It is this pursuit of beauty both in art form and the human countenance that propelled Dr. Kayle to this rarified and intricate profession. The analogy of the talented artist working deftly to create his masterpiece is suitably applicable to a plastic surgeon using his nimble hands skillfully and brilliantly to enhance and accentuate the beauty of the patient who chooses to ‘go under the proverbial knife’. SURGEON’S SKILLS Dr. Kayle embodies these skills required of a trustworthy surgeon equipped with sophisticated equipment and the latest available technologies, he is ably supported by a core quartet comprising eminent doctors – Dr. Ferdous Al Saigh, Specialist Obstetrics and Gynaecology; Dr. Jasmin Abd El Baki, Specialist Dermatology; Dr. Raafat Lakkis, Specialist Dermatology and Manal El Hage, GULF NEWS SPONSORED SUPPLEMENT

Certified Beautician. This team is further buttressed by 10 additional, multi-national employees comprising nurses, medical, paramedical and administrative staff. Dr. Kayle Aesthetic Clinic offers a wide range of invasive and non-invasive surgeries skincare, dermatological, beauty make-up, medical tattoos to cover skin imperfections and related services. These include facial cosmetic, breast cosmetic, eyelid cosmetic and body contouring surgeries; non-surgical facial rejuvenation; nose jobs; cellulite, firming and toning treatment; de-pigmentation treatment; non-surgical skin tightening; skin photo-rejuvenation; laser hair removal; brow lifting, face lifting, tummy tucks, body reshaping, thigh lifting surgeries, liposuction and Botox among several others. PROFESSIONALISM PERSONIFIED True to form as an adroit surgeon, Dr. Kayle allays concerns about the vanity of his practice, gratifying wealthy customers and

patients who are narcissistic and self-absorbed about their looks. “Plastic surgery is neither about vanity nor arrogance, it is a sophisticated ethical medical practice intended to raise the self-esteem, confidence and importantly to embellish and accentuate physical looks that are vital and desirable attributes in today’s business and the entertainment, celluloid and social media-oriented world where good looks coupled with capabilities can make the difference between success and failure.” Dr. Kayle is all praise for Dubai’s entrepreneurial, cosmopolitan, affluent, beauty consciousness and business-oriented culture and it is for these reasons he chose to set up his practice here. As part of his expansion plans he is mulling the possibility of setting up the Dr. Kayle Aesthetic Clinic in Abu Dhabi in the foreseeable future but did not specify a timeline. Men are also increasingly gravitating towards this sector traditionally associated with women. “Today two-thirds of my customers are female and a third is male,” he affirms. “The patient profile also defies stereotypes and today my clinic’s customers come from a mix of nationalities, professional groups, social classes, cultures, age and ethnicities, a reflection of the demographic composition of the UAE,” he adds. THREE-PRONGED APPROACH According to Dr. Kayle there are three broad kinds of treatments available at the clinic. The first is the beautician who can administer external, superficial treatments in addition to coverage and make-up. Then there is the dermatologist who provides comprehensive skin-related treatments and solutions for a growing list of skin deficiencies, including acne, moles, hair-loss, psoriasis, vitiligo and warts, as well as improving on the aging face. At the tertiary level are surgical procedures, whether minimally invasive or fully invasive, that include fat filling, thread lifting, mini- or full face lifting, breast augmentation, breast lifting and breast reduction; buttock lifting, ear cosmetic surgery, excision of skin lesions, facial implants, liposuction and lipo-sculpture, nose jobs (rhinoplasty) and many more. “Some of these procedures, namely the minimally invasive ones, can be performed in our clinic using local anesthesia with no or very short down time while other invasive surgeries lasting a GULF NEWS SPONSORED SUPPLEMENT

couple of hours such as liposuction, breast augmentation and nose jobs are performed as outpatient procedures in a hospital under supervised general anaesthesia where patient safety is paramount. Patients are discharged mostly the same day or the following day at the very latest,” explains Dr. Kayle. He also indicated that procedures may take between less than an hour to a bit more than four hours for more complicated surgeries. HOLISTIC SERVICES Most patients coming to Dr. Kayle Aesthetic Clinic will find a whole suite of services conveniently available all under one roof. In Dr. Kayle’s estimation, his clinic is a onestop-centre for all needs related to beauty enhancement, skin and beauty care requirements. “Our services are exhaustive and cover multiple contingencies,” states Dr. Kayle. An experienced surgeon, Dr. Kayle is acutely aware of the ethics and the regulatory mechanisms that govern that practice. “Among the professional responsibilities of a surgeon is to offer above-board consultancies. So when a potential patient visits our clinic for a specific purpose it is my job to closely examine all aspects and all possible repercussions of the surgery and this entails talking extensively to the patient, offer pre-surgery advice and to address issues relating to expectations, necessity, operability, costs, risks, possible side-effects, post-surgery ramifications during our assessments as part of our pre-operation interview,” remarks Dr. Kayle. There have also been instances when he has advised patients against the surgeries if they are deemed unnecessary or if he suspects there might be adverse reactions to the same. REGULATORY MECHANISMS ‘There are also strict and rigorous industry, ministry and government regulations that govern our practice,’ admits Dr. Kayle. “We are closely monitored and the regulators make periodic and occasionally surprise visits to ensure that we adhere to the highest professional standards expected of us,” admits Dr. Kayle. In Dr. Kayle’s estimation there is a fair level of competition in the business but as he puts it – to each one his own. Practitioners like him develop their own patient base and

get progressively bigger through word of mouth and reputation. Dr. Kayle also opines that plastic surgery is a growing profession and is here to stay and that there will be a spurt of non-invasive procedures going forward. “More and more patients are coming into the fold and business is expected to surge with time,” he asserts. Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, goes the old adage. Dr. Kayle is the ultimate beholder who sees beauty up close and personal on daily basis and importantly has the ability to improvise and restore when necessary and where applicable.

The two most important groups of people for your business are your customers and your employees. To take care of them you need the best solutions, which is why CentraHub has spent years developing their offering. “Our roots go back to 1992 as part of Focus Softnet,” says Nisith Naik, CEO of CentraHub Technologies. “We really began product development in 2006-2007 and by 2015 we were ready to form a new company to concentrate on these solutions.” CentraHub’s goal is to bring people and processes together through effective, easyto-use systems. Their Human Capital Management (HCM) system covers recruitment to separation and everything in between. This includes the organizational structure, compensation, shifts, training, employee appraisals and even self-service functionality for staff. Employees can review their personal information, apply for vacations or register for training on their own, saving time and resources. CentraHub’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) solution contains essential modules which handle processes such as sales and marketing, service and project management. Advancing lives with Cerner health technology Better patient care is increasingly dependent upon the best healthcare technology.

“We want to support the work flow, reduce human errors and minimize the administrative burden. This gives a better healthcare experience for patients and creates satisfaction for caregivers.” Michael Schelper, General Manager, UAE and Kuwait, Cerner Middle East

Cerner has specialised in healthcare technology since its founding in the US in 1979. Cerner Middle East dates to 1991 and they now have clients in Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE. BETTER RESULTS WITH EMPOWERING Empowering the healthcare professionals with the best health care technologies will help create the best experience for their patients. “Nurses might spend 60 per cent of their time in administrative tasks,” says Michael Schelper, General Manager –UAE and Kuwait, Cerner Middle East. “We want to support the work flow, reduce human errors and minimize the administrative burden. This gives a better healthcare experience for patients and creates satisfaction for caregivers.” Cerner’s Millennium solution is one example. Electronic medical records reduce paperwork and provide a seamless data flow. If a patient is moved from an emergenGULF NEWS SPONSORED SUPPLEMENT

cy unit to a hospital ward, the healthcare professionals will have unified access to the patient’s data. SMART DOCUMENTATION Other major innovations include medicine dispensation and smart documentation. Medicine can be dispensed with the scan of a badge, while reports can be generated using a template of predefined text. The goal is improved efficiency and increased safety so patients enjoy better health. In addition, Cerner’s holistic offering is optimised for Middle Eastern countries. The system can adjust medicine schedules based upon Ramadan hours or prayer times, and the patient portal is available in Arabic. “The patient portal is a great tool that allows patients to communicate with their care providers,” adds Schelper. “It gives them access to their medical records, which are updated in real time, allows them to make medical appointments, and send messages to their doctor.”

Cerner has also introduced Population Health Management analytics solutions, which is about making sure the patient data is proactively being used appropriately along with preventive medicine to effectively manage health. KNOW, ENGAGE, MANAGE Cerner is guided by its motto “Know, Engage, Manage.” Ensuring a population’s health is managed effectively involves knowing the people afflicted with hypertension, for example, and being able to recall and treat them. Once those patients are engaged, you want to keep them healthy by working with them so their conditions can be managed. “Cerner has been working with visionary leadership in the GCC for the creation of a unified medical record – data that can be shared among and accessed by multiple health organisations so they can better manage a population’s health,” Schelper concludes.
