There is no doubt that this well-appointed kitchen is sure to be the site of many gatherings where family, friends and food will make up the heart of the action. Top-of-the-line appliances complement the glazed custom cabinetry and mirrored cabinet that cleverly conceals the refrigerator. The spacious alder wood island is topped with a quartz countertop and fringed by a walnut dining shelf.
The kitchen’s faux-finished silver range hood provides a sleek focal point while 12-by-12-inch tiles with an inset stainless steel circular motif add visual interest above the cooktop. A variety of drawers and cabinets offer ample storage space and the island’s prep sink ensures functionality. The circular elements of the unique light fixture over the island continue the backsplash’s design theme.

An expansive wall of windows fills the hearth room and kitchen area with an abundance of daylight and picturesque views. Most of the home’s furnishings and appointments, such as those in the hearth room, were locally sourced in the Kansas City area. Local businesses supplied furnishings from rustic leather chairs and custom sofas to opulent light fixtures and pops of pillow color, including all the drapes and bedding throughout the home.

An eye-catching gabled roof tops the main floor’s four-season lanai where stone flooring and plenty of natural light blend outdoor serenity with climate-controlled environs. Sweeping exterior views coupled with cozy seating options, soft uplighting and a fireplace make this airy room the ideal spot for a little reading or TV.

Throughout the home is a display of a variety of specialty faux finishes and glazes. With textured gray ceiling beams that meet at a circle coffer, the formal dining room showcases unique architectural elements, quiet hues and an elegant chandelier. The dining set fuses the natural appeal of a solid wood table and modern metal chairs with the room’s silver-leaf detailing.

Adjoining the master suite, the master bath is truly breathtaking. While the bath is dressed in shimmering shades of beige and silver, it is the center of the room that demands attention. A custom creation by interior designer Janet Alholm, the dramatic column stands floor to ceiling and is adorned in pencil accent tiles and beveled mirrors. Porcelain and marble tile flooring, a freestanding tub, an oversized shower and a luxury walk-in closet round out this lavish

Earthy elements prevail in the spacious master suite thanks to a stone fireplace, hand-scraped hickory flooring and rustic beams. A vast ribbon of LED tape light frames the ceiling’s perimeter in a seamless glow while also providing efficient lighting. The lounge bar is easily the high point of this room. The Patagonia granite atop the curved bar largely consists of natural quartz and effortlessly reflects light from the fixture above, which is a piece of art –– literally. Created specifically for this home, this stunning element resembles a long rustic branch with icicle-like lighting. Mirrors behind the bar and LED lighting lend brilliance to this cosmopolitan setting.

The lower-level 450-square-foot home cinema is a treat for any fan of film. With a barrel-vaulted sky full of fiber optic stars, stadium seating and a granite-topped bar, this room is destined to be a family favorite. Padded fabric walls promise a sensational sound experience and a mini-fridge and wine cooler ensure no thirsty guests. Pass the popcorn please!
The walk-out lower level is also home to a handsome lounge area complete with three flat screen TVs, billiards and a dazzling bar. While entertainment was the main goal of this space, style has not been sacrificed for fun. Porcelain tile flooring trimmed in a river rock border, stone columns and headers, and a mix of leather and fabric furnishings combine in a fusion of rugged appeal, polished sophistication and uncomplicated leisure. Winding further around the lower level, entertainment options continue with an Xbox room, arcade and home gym.

When it comes to outdoor living, this private backyard oasis delivers. A pool with three infinity-edge waterfalls, spa and pergola take the traditional poolside experience to a whole new level. Even movies under the stars are possible with the drop-down 15-foot outdoor screen on the pergola. Whether inside or outside on one of the balconies or patios, this home guarantees an unparalleled approach to relishing family, friends and cherished moments.
This home is full of so much more than meets the eye. Consider, for example, the secret spiral slide tucked into a lower-level bookcase which slips into the basketball court in the sub-basement. Take the stairs or take the slide to shoot some hoops or just expend some extra energy. Spectators can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the action from overstuffed leather chairs around a driftwood coffee table.

Awash in Blue There’s no doubt that this stunning Leawood kitchen is a head-turner. When the homeowner decided to color outside the lines somewhat when it came to giving her kitchen a complete makeover, designer Alissa Welschmeyer was ready to assist.
As this particular home underwent a complete
renovation with the goal of eventually putting it on the market, the kitchen truly became a focal point. “I love it when people decide to bring color into a space,” noted Welschmeyer, who harmoniously partnered with the homeowner, combining both of their ideas with an obvious accent on fun. “I have worked with this client before and she is so much fun as she really loves to dig in and pull it all together.” While all of the complementary colors certainly catch the eye, it is the elongated straight-edged island painted in Restoration Hardware blue sage that takes center stage. With ample seating for family and guests, this island also boasts extra cabinet space for increased storage, as well as a built-in microwave. Industrial pendant lighting with mercury finish parading down the middle of the island adds a touch of elegant sophistication. The mix of quartz countertops in Frosty Carina on the island and hutch along with the dark grey granite on the perimeter work well with the waterglass subway tile accented with white grout. The hutch also enjoys Satin Seedy glass cabinets on top with painted shelving inside to match the blue in the rest of the kitchen. All of this partners well with the Maison Blanche painted birch cabinets. All new stainless steel appliances make a striking statement of their own, working seamlessly with the bright colors, wood paneled ceiling and dark stained hardwood flooring. Subtle details such as the cup pulls and stain nickel finish on the drawer and door hardware quietly but powerfully pull the look together. Not to be outdone by the eye-catching dynamics of the rest of the kitchen is the wood paneled ceiling, accentuated with sky lights and recessed cans. “This ceiling is actually the original ceiling,” noted Welschmeyer. “We were going to paint it white but decided it was best left as it was.” Sometimes it is just that one original touch that makes a space seem vibrantly new and alive.

amount of manipulation of space and form to bring this kitchen to reality. “We basically gutted this kitchen down to the studs,” noted Ott. “The cooking wall used to be where the refrigerator is now, and we also added an L-shaped booth with a rectangular table.” In order to make the kitchen easier to access and much more user-friendly, Ott employed some creative ingenuity.
And proving the full functionality of this kitchen, Ott pointed to the unique aspects of the center island. Ample storage all around makes this a homeowner’s dream. “The back of the island contains a drawer stack and two refrigerator drawers, along with an ice machine,” she said. “There is even more storage on the other side.” The 24-inch deep pantry maximizes every square inch of its

Space to Entertain Kitchen designer Shelby Puetz of Regarding Kitchens has an obvious knack for making people’s dreams come true when it comes to the style, tone and flavor of the kitchen remodel they desire. When she tackled a complete renovation for this Olathe kitchen that had been stuck in the 1990s for quite some time, she had her work cut out for her. While the husband of the home was drawn to a contemporary ambiance with minimalist undertones, the wife favored a more traditional appeal. Puetz seamlessly blended those persuasions employing a stunning transitional style that catered to the couple’s tastes. “This is a family of eight and they enjoy hosting a lot of social events in their home,” noted Puetz. “In order to bring the dated look of the kitchen into a newer design, we took out the original honey oak cabinetry and laminate counter tops and added perimeter white maple frameless cabinetry and a maple stained island, which houses a dishwasher and a Blanco Performa sink.” The luxurious countertops catch the eye with their elegant blend of grays, taupes and a suggestion of chartreuse in this Pacific style Silestone quartz, and in order to give this space a broader landscape from which to enjoy the view, a bit of muscle was required. “We took out the wall that originally extended between two rooms where the refrigerator currently is and the space now flows into the family room,” noted Puetz. Other highlights include the maple hood above the stove that is perfectly accented by the natural ivory tumble travertine 2” x 4” brick pattern tiles in the backsplash. All new appliances made of stainless steel with a Thermador gas cooktop make cooking fun, along with the GE oven combination and the Sharp microwave to the right of the range that sets lower, keeping it out of one’s eye line and not absorbing extra counter space. A unique gem in this kitchen is the bar/hutch area that stands just before the entry to the dining room. The serving counter top is made of walnut and the glass cabinet above provides elegant framework for the encased stemware. Wine storage is contiguous to the hutch, which has inside drawers with dividers for organized storage of liquor. “This is the client’s dedicated socializing spot,” noted Puetz. Among the final touches include the recessed cans and gorgeous pendant lights that complement the entire space. “I enjoyed working with this couple,” smiled Puetz. “They embraced my creative ideas, designed to meet their individual desires.”

GRAND IDEAS For Increasing Small Kitchen Functionality

KCH&S January/February 2016
KCHS:
WEISS: The first thing I would suggest is to open the space to
another area if possible by removing a wall. Opening the kitchen to the breakfast area, for example, will provide more space with which to work, as well as provide an airy feel that makes it look bigger. KCHS:
WEISS: Some kitchens seem to have everything in the exactly least
effective spot. If this is the case, one of the best ways to solve the problem is by reconfiguring the space for more efficient usage. Think about workflow and place the stove and microwave in close proximity and the sink and dishwasher together at the end of the work station. Remember to keep the refrigerator close to the preparation work area. See Our Kitchen Backsplashes Editorial on Page 62
KCHS:
WEISS: I would consider adding cabinet functionality. Adding
options like pullouts can make the back of the cabinets more accessible and usable. A Lazy Susan turnstyle in the corner space can give you greater access to a usually dead space and provide a space to place difficult to store items like small appliances. Also, if you have high ceilings consider replacing your cabinets with ones that reach the ceiling for even more storage space.
Consignment Furniture Store KCHS:
WEISS: First, increase your task lighting. Proper lighting brightens
the kitchen and makes working much easier. Choose undercounter options for trash and recyclables to free up floor space. I would also consider painting the wall or cabinets white and choosing a light colored backsplash. For backsplashes, glass tiles are extremely popular right now for the kitchen because they reflect light and make the space feel open. Lastly, I would keep the counters free of clutter. Put away appliances you do not need very often so that you have more space to work, and make the

kitchen feel as spacious as possible. KCHS:
“ WEISS: Personally, I think reconfiguring cabinets and drawers with
pullouts is probably one of the fastest and most valuable ways to get more functionality of a kitchen. Sometimes a simple fix yields huge results.

survival rates after disease or injury, and an increase in the incidence of obesity all contribute to the increased incidence of injury. Unfortunately, many of these incidents result in a decreased mobility that seriously impacts the life of the sufferer. One doctor, C. Lan Fotopoulos, a physiatrist with the highly respected DicksonDiveley Midwest Orthopaedic Clinic, believes that injuries that compromise mobility deserve a common-sense approach that addresses the many intricacies of injury with multi-faceted solutions. Nothing sidelines a person more than a nagging physical injury, yet many still are slow to take their injuries seriously, and assume that a “simple pain” is the same as a simple injury. Still many others believe that physiatry, the branch of medicine that diagnoses, treats, and manages disorders and injuries of the muscles, bones, and nerves is reserved for hard core athletes or those who have some form of a seriously debilitating injury.

Military Trained Precision and Big Picture Thinking A graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, Dr. Fotopoulos is no stranger to big picture thinking. Board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation; pain medicine; sports medicine; and undersea hyperbaric medicine, his career has been marked by diversity and excitement. In addition to serving as an emergency room physician for several years, he also enjoyed a thrilling career in the military, serving as a lieutenant commander and diving and undersea medical officer in the U.S Navy. It was while serving in theaters from the Persian Gulf to North Africa that Dr. Fotopoulos studied hyperbaric and diving medicine and worked alongside Navy SEALS and other special Physiatry –– sometimes called physical medicine and rehabilitation, however, is for everyone from the professional athlete to the person experiencing long-term back pain. “Injury and the resulting pain are indiscriminate. Dr. Fotopoulos, who was the first, and for an extended period only physiatrist in the Kansas City area, has been fortunate to see the changes firsthand. “Pain is not a simple thing. Doctors and nurses are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, but not in the finding the cause or treating pain. And because pain is complex, it requires a team approach.” Today, a visit to the physiatrist is the first referral for most injuries whether to find the root cause of pain, prevent further damage, or effectively manage ongoing pain. This translates into a huge advantage for patient care. “Physiatrists have the advantage of looking at the whole picture. We look at the medical issue, but also how the medical issues at hand fully impact the patient’s mobility and self-care. The increasingly collaborative atmosphere of medicine makes this even more beneficial,” he furthered. KCH&S HEALTHY KANSAS CITY 2016

The steroid reduces inflammation and swelling of the spinal nerve roots and surrounding tissues, reducing the pain caused by swelling.” Diverse options also exist for common problems such as osteoporotic fractures, says Dr. Fotopoulos. “Sacroplasty, vertebroplasty and balloon assisted kyphoplasty all KCH&S HEALTHY KANSAS CITY 2016

Getting through challenging times –– such as cancer treatment or other types of blood disorders –– requires much more than having an accurate diagnosis. It requires all of the elements of treatments, technologies and outside support coming together to form the most advantageous conditions possible to deal with a serious health condition. The Cancer and Blood Center began a year ago with that mission in mind explains its founder, Dr. Kelley Young, who having experience in a large hospital setting saw the value in bringing oncology and hematology to the community level. “When a patient is dealing with a significant health issue, the process of receiving treatment can cause them to become disconnected from the many things that matter in life. This makes all of the things surrounding treatment take center stage, which can become even more stressful. The ability to maintain a normal routine is very beneficial to patients. Work and other activities provide a welcomed distraction as well as help maintain ties to friends, family, and support groups,” Dr. Young shared of the practicality of attaining care. Community Care Means Increased Options There are several common misconceptions about community based care which The Cancer and Blood Center wished to dispel. Many people believe that community care limits the patient’s options, or that the options are different or less advanced than are available in other medical settings. Nothing, however, can be further from the truth. “Community-based care doesn’t mean limited options. In fact it means more efficiency in accessing all of your options,” contends Dr. Breier. Patients of the KIM Cancer and Blood Center are not limited to one hospital, but have access to several of the top hospitals in the area. The center is staffed with attentive and experienced medical Oncologists, Oncology Certified Nurses and pharmacist, and a highly trained nutritionist. “These are not people new to the field, but have been in oncology for years, bringing vast experience,” he continued. technologies without having to leave their support system behind or having to temporarily relocate. “Clinical trials are not for every patient, but for those who are good candidates, they receive the most promising treatments as early as possible. Many patients respond very positively to them, which is important. Participating is not always an easy decision however. In a community-based atmosphere, the patient receives the added support that is so helpful in navigating the process,” Dr. Young explained of the availability of clinical trials.
World-Class Medical Oncology Treatments Patients with cancer need more than an accurate diagnosis. Realizing this, Cancer and Blood Center works tirelessly to make best of class treatments available locally.

Dr. Young understands the patient advantage of having these services available locally, and more personally. “Patients dealing with cancer need easy access to the treatments that will relieve the symptoms; slow the growth and spread and often cure the disease. United for Care
Great care is more than administering treatments for the team at Cancer and Blood Center. It is about leveraging every element of healthcare, as well as other facets such as family, in the most powerful and beneficial ways to benefit the patient and help them battle against cancer and blood diseases. “Care must go well beyond simply delivering treatments. We understand this and embrace our broader responsibility of fostering relationships that will help our patients. We encourage family participation and provide support to caregivers. We also encourage patients to become involved in community support groups. Most importantly, we dedicate ourselves to staying aware of the latest advances, and knowing every aspect of our patients’ diagnosis. It is our firm belief that patients deserve the full efforts of every team member,” Dr. Young firmly asserted.
The Changing Face of Medicine The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2014 and 2015, there are over 14 million Americans living with a cancer diagnosis at some stage of new diagnosis, active treatment or in remission with need for ongoing followup. With the many advances in targeted therapies and

Help! I feel depressed, anxious, overwhelmed and underappreciated and I don’t know where to turn!
A
t some point in our lives, most people feel this way, but feel reluctant to seek professional help.
Most individuals wouldn’t hesitate to seek help for a serious physical
illness, but are reluctant to seek out a Therapist or Counselor. Either they feel intimidated or ashamed and prefer instead to seek help from a friend or family member; or they feel that the time commitment and cost of therapy would be prohibitive. Unfortunately, sometimes the advice we receive from friends or family, though well intended, may not provide the relief or help we really need. A skilled Therapist can provide professional care that is based on evidence-based practice and several proven methods of therapy that can be employed to provide effective treatment for individuals, couples, and families. Most therapists are required to have at least a Masters Degree and have met state licensing requirements of ethics, experience and education, including required annual continuing education to keep them current on the latest treatment methods. Gone are the days when individuals were afraid to tell friends they were seeking help from a Psychotherapist or Counselor. Today, it has become much more accepted to schedule personal time with someone to talk through your most difficult and private issues, knowing that a trained professional will listen to those concerns in a safe, friendly and nonjudgmental atmosphere. Also, some therapists will work with their clients on a sliding rate scale to make therapy affordable. Many individuals and couples have found that getting long overdue professional help has not only given them new tools in coping with difficult personal relationships, but also helped them to be more productive at work

and avoid or eliminate certain medical conditions brought on by depression, stress or worry. Plus, studies have shown that therapy in combination with medication can be more effective than medication alone. Your counselor can coordinate with your physician. Some of the most common reasons to seek help from a mental health professional are: Depression, Anxiety, Grief and Loss, divorce or relationship concerns, dysfunctional family relationships, addictions, Anger Management, Bi-Polar or Personality Disorders, Adult Bullying and dealing with workplace conflict. Many adults also seek help for dealing with Procrastination or for Assertiveness Training as well as a myriad of other personal or mental health concerns. Look for a therapist or counselor that you feel not only demonstrates professional competence, but provides a comfortable, confidential, and relaxed environment. Don’t wait; there are many qualified therapists available to give you the help you need. You and your family are worth it!

he American culture is increasingly busy and multifaceted, placing new and
increasing stresses upon the body. Evidence of the effects of these stresses is
abundant and stark. Statistics show that 69% of Americans are overweight and/or obese. Many are suffering from the common and diverse effects caused by hormonal imbalance, while countless others seek to reverse the signs of aging. Health and wellness is a huge concern in the United States, and though we place an enormous amount of importance on it, many are neglecting their own needs simply because of a lack of convenience or because services fail to keep the same pace their lives demand. Beginning his career as an OBGYN, James Mirabile, M.D., FACOG saw that patients
desired supportive beauty, health, and wellness services that fit their lifestyle. After delivering over 7,500 babies, Dr. Mirabile retired from Obstetrics to concentrate his area of expertise in Gynecology, including minimally invasive gynecological treatment and bio-identical hormone therapy to treat perimenopausal and menopausal women. The services continued to expand to meet the needs and in 1999 he founded a medical spa, MedCosmetic. In 2010, he opened Medi-Weightloss, a medically

Astonishingly, many women will delay gynecological services, though such services are an integral part of a woman’s comprehensive health care. One of the biggest barriers to care is true accessibility. Beyond having a convenient location, patients today want those services in an atmosphere comfortable to them at every stage of their life. Without that, patients are far less likely to access the care. “We understand that women want and require different gynecological services at

The world of women’s healthcare is constantly evolving, and we make sure that our treatments are evolving, while at the same time specific to each patient’s gynecological needs,” Dr. Mirabile shares. At the practice, Dr. Mirabile and three nurse practitioners offer well woman care, as well as treat problematic gynecological conditions including urinary incontinence, uterine fibroids, and heavy menstrual bleeding. Multifaceted Care is More Than Convenient
The multicare practice offers much more than convenience. Many aspects of care are interrelated. “Often times a patient may come to us for a specific concern and then, because many conditions are interrelated, we find that another condition is the underlying cause. For example, a weight loss patient may learn that she has hormonal imbalance. Once we solve the hormonal imbalance issue, she is more successful in her weight loss efforts.” That fusion of efforts and technology leveraged for ultimate success is really the heart of Mirabile M.D. Beauty, Health and Wellness. Every member of the team works tirelessly to help people reclaim their lives, whether they are treating a person for hormone deficiency, weight loss or acne, they are making a difference in their lives. “I find this work is some of the most rewarding I have ever done. “The tools that medically we use to help you manage your weight

ansas City is blessed with a cornucopia of physicians specializing in all areas of medicine. Insurance aside, you can pick and choose the ones that you believe are
best suited and most qualified to meet your personal health needs. It may take a bit of research on your part, and perhaps a bit of trial and error, but when it comes to selecting the best gastroenterology specialists in the metro area, perhaps this article will save you appreciable time and effort in that regard. First of all, what is gastroenterology? Essentially, it is the branch of medicine that deals with disorders of the stomach and intestines. A gastroenterologist, then, is someone who studies and treats the function and diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, pancreas, gall bladder, bile ducts and liver. If that makes you a bit squeamish, consider the idea that a gastroenterologist is one who can perform a short-term procedure that can provide long term benefits, depending upon the health issue at hand. Gastroenterology, Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine and has been in practice since 1982. He opened Midwest Gastroenterology Center in 1998, with a primary presence in Lee’s Summit, Missouri since 2003. Dr. Taormina is affiliated with Centerpoint Medical Center and is also the Medical Director of the Midwest Physicians Surgery Center in Lee’s Summit, the center’s own endoscopy center dedicated just to GI procedures. However, this accomplished physician’s passion for medicine began before he was even old enough to drive. “I knew I was going to be a doctor when I was 13 years old,” he recalled, referencing his upbringing in the inner city. “I was there when my dad died in the middle of the night at home from cardiac arrest. I thought to myself ‘if only I’d known what to do, I could have saved him.’” That’s a tough burden to place upon your heart, but it truly intoxicated Dr. Taormina’s desire to pursue a calling in medicine, and while he stood helpless as his father took his last breath, his inherent drive professionals work tirelessly to provide. Clearly passionate about what he does, Dr. Taormina confidently pontificates with enthusiasm and excitement for his chosen profession, and for good reason. After all, he is in the business of saving lives. Having completed thousands upon thousands of GI procedures over the course of his career, it’s easy to understand why so many people put their health in his hands. A Kansas City native, Dr. Taormina graduated from medical school in 1977, completing the accelerated six-year program at the University of Missouri –– Kansas City School of Medicine. From there he transitioned to an internship at Baylor Medical Center in Houston, Texas and also acquired five years of postgraduate training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and a facility in Honolulu, completing a Fellowship in Gastroenterology. Man of Nobility Mike Rivera

OUTSTANDING KANSAS CITY MAN OF THE MONTH
In my opinion, one of the most beautiful gifts in life is the gift of parents passing down the skill sets that enable their children to thrive in a community, get along with others and to never ever give up. Judy Rivera has done a stellar job with her son Mike. His life story is truly one of amazement.
{
~ Zoe Herrington ike Rivera’s roots run deep here in Kansas City, something he finds quite meaningful. The area and the community has always been where he has turned for support, inspiration, and motivation. Born in Shawnee, Rivera went to school locally and played high school football. After graduation, he attended and played football for KU. “One of the highlights was seeing the Jayhawks get to the 2008 Orange Bowl,” Rivera spoke of one of his fondest memories. “The game was part of the 2007-2008 Bowl Championship Series and was played against the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Jayhawks defeated Virginia Tech 24-21.” Coming out of KU, Rivera, a linebacker, had the opportunity to be an undrafted free agent in the NFL. “The odds were against me. It was a constant challenge but I persevered through being released and picked up several times.” His football career included playing for the Chicago Bears, Tennessee Titans, Green Bay Packers and twice for the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. The highlight of his NFL career was going to the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots in 2011. It was the seventh Super Bowl trip in the franchise history, and fifth for head coach Bill Belichick. The team had dedicated the season to the memory of Myra Kraft, the wife of owner Robert Kraft, who died July 20, 2011 after a long battle against cancer. “We lost the game, but it was a once in a lifetime experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything.” As important as football is to him, Rivera shares that it really isn’t the most important thing in his life. “Football is a great game, and I enjoyed every moment of my football career, but more important to me are the things I learned in the process, such as hard work, perseverance, and proper planning. Those are the things that serve you in the rest of life.” Those qualities are serving him now, in his new career as a commercial real estate professional with Beaumont Commercial Services, Inc. specializing in tenant representation, investment acquisition, and development consulting. “Everything I learned on the field, I bring with me to help clients make the best possible real estate decisions that will lead to the optimal growth of their business and put them in the best position possible in the future. I really enjoy have a part in helping people make decisions that ultimately strengthen the community,” Shared Rivera thoughtfully. Rivera firmly believes that hard work is the key to success and that success is out there for anyone that is willing to put in the effort and be wise in their decision making process. “One of the things I like to suggest to people is reading the book Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill. It is a book that was recommended to me by Zoe Harrington and a real gem of information for anyone wanting to make the most of their efforts professionally and personally.” Rivera attributes his own success to the many people that have played a role in his life, including his parents, who have always demonstrated the value of hard work. Today, Rivera continues to enjoy working within the community and spending time with his wife Kristi and their two rescued King Charles Spaniels, Kismet and Hank.

~ Zoe Herrington aking a non-traditional path isn’t easy according to Jane Haney, but it is well worth the effort. After enjoying a 30 year career as a nurse, Haney decided it was time for a change. “I was happy in my work as a nurse in OB and delivery. It was very rewarding, but at the same time it was very stressful. While each doctor might deliver one or two babies a day, the nurses had to be there for each delivery. It was a tremendous amount of responsibility,” shared Haney. Eventually, she considered going back to school to get a degree in nursing which would allow her to work in the public school system. “I found that schools were phasing out school nurses and decided to consider other options. At the time, my daughter had just become a pharmacist and the work and the quality of life it offered intrigued me. I loved that it allowed you to work with people but in a lower stress environment. So I decided to apply for the pharmacy program at KU.” The competition to get into the program was stiff with nearly 500 applicants for only 90 available spaces. Undaunted, she applied anyway. Much to her surprise, she was accepted and the journey began. “I was a little nervous going back to school. Many people thought I was silly going back to school so late in life but I figured that I did not have any reason not to try.” The students were quick to accept her and she formed a study group with three other students and together they forged ahead. “ I might have worried that I couldn’t do it had I known what was ahead, but I took it one day, one test at a time until I reached my goal.” The most rewarding moment was “walking down the hill” for graduation. “It was wonderful to have the opportunity to walk down that hill and know that I reached my goal in attaining my degree. It was also special because it was the same walk my kids made,” she thoughtfully reflected. “Even better, my youngest son recently made the same walk, also graduating from pharmacy school.” After graduation, Haney found her niche as a pharmacist at Price Chopper. The smaller pharmacy allows her the time she wants to really engage with the customers and provide the personal attention she feels each one deserves. “It has been 19 years since graduating, and I have loved every minute of my work. Now, I am semi-retired and work enough to keep me pleasantly busy and allow me to enjoy buying gifts for my six children, their spouses, and my nine grandchildren.” When asked what she would tell someone also contemplating going back to school but afraid age or some other barrier might hold them back, she offered some honest advice. “Going back to school was not at all easy, but it was doable. If you think about it in the totality, some things seem impossible. When you take it as one task at a time, you find that it is manageable and eventually you succeed. I always tell people that if you want it bad enough, you can do it.” In the midst of working and raising a family, it was a monumental achievement, but she is quick to give credit where it is due. “I had wonderful support from family and could not have done it without them. Also, most importantly, I know I had help from my Creator. With the right support, you really can achieve your goals.”

Looking for a new spin on the recent Acrylic furniture trend? How about adding brass? Yes brass. Gold finishes have been showing up at the last couple of markets, and now brushed brass is making a showing. Adding brass to acrylic adds warmth to this modern material. It also has a bit of a retro 70’s vibe. I would use this sparingly, just one piece as a unique accent.
