“The biggest attraction of the house, in my opinion, is its mission-style columns, strategically placed throughout,” said White. “Our goal was to focus the space around the columns to anchor the house and the outdoor living space together through the architecture.” To that end, White created the central focus of the backyard with the intent to capture the primal aspects of life –– fire and water –– and she did not miss the mark with the 12 foot fire trough that overlooks the three and a half feet deep pool, more commonly known in this type of setting as a “spool,” which is essentially a combination of a pool and a spa. As opposed to typical outdoor pools, the spool can enjoy year-round use, with its heated water supply and massaging jets in the spa. “This definitely has a ski lodge influence in the colder months,” noted White. Made specifically for Fowler, custom-sized benches were constructed contiguous to the fire pit and customized stone weirs were placed above the spool to allow the flowing water to fall directly upon her shoulders when she relaxes and unwinds. Whether gazing down between the stone columns above the spool by the fire trough or taking in the view from the spool itself, there is not a bad seat in the place.

BRENT SLEDD’S NEXT GREAT ADVENTURE Brent Sledd has always had an affinity for the heartland, its communities, and all of the beauty and hearty ingenuity that goes with it. However, once the project got underway and took on wings of its own, the swing set no longer fit in the yard and had to go. Fortunately, the kids weren’t upset for too long, as the swimming pool that took its place brought along a cornucopia of exciting and alternative means of backyard fun. At first glance, one’s eyes are treated to a free flowing landscape design that beautifully marries a hot tub, a lounge pool and a free form pool, all gracefully connected from one elevation to another as the hot tub seamlessly transitions to the shallow sun ledge that soon gives way to the swimming pool that begins at three feet deep and at its deepest is seven feet. Water gracefully cascades from the lounge area into the pool. However, in order to realize this dreamlike setting, the homeowners first put pen to paper with Roger Banks, owner of Banks Blue Valley Pool and Spa. “We can do just about anything with a pool,” noted Banks. And, true to his word, Banks did not disappoint his clients in this case. “This project turned out a million times better than what I initially saw on paper,” smiled the homeowner. “We never dreamed that it would all flow from one level to the next. Life is pretty busy for Lonnie Roberts. And he seems to LIKe it that way just fine. As owner of Stone Solutions in Merriam, Kan., Lonnie’s days are spent assisting contractors, designers and homeowners seeking outdoor pavers, paving stones, segmental wall block and natural stone. The Dodge City, Kan., native has been immersed in the hardscapes industry since 1984 and is well-versed in creating sensational outdoor living spaces using products ranging from pavers and stone fireplaces to lighting and outdoor kitchen accessories. So perhaps it’s no surprise that one of Lonnie’s finest outdoor creations can be found right in his own backyard. Built in 1977 by Lonnie and his wife, Sally, the Roberts’ Shawnee, Kan., home is surrounded by pine, oak and ash trees and steeped in quiet charm. But the two-story home and one-acre lot have evolved much over the years. The vibrant couple have shared a lively 38 years in their home while pursuing successful careers, raising their daughter, Amy Rehkop, bookkeeper for Stone Solutions and son, Scott, a high school principal, and hosting myriad gatherings of family and friends while, above all, enjoying life.

fun in the sun The family has always enjoyed spending time outside, but their alfresco recreation reached a new level when the couple had a spacious L-shaped, in-ground heated pool installed in 1984. “We built the pool, a pool house, added stockyard pavers and created a railroad tie retaining wall,” says Lonnie. That was the beginning of the Roberts’ backyard transformation. And from then on, the Roberts’ home was increasingly tapped as the preferred gathering site for family and friends.

Dive right into this tranquil midnight oasis. Few things can evoke that idyllic image of sun-kissed bliss like a shimmering pool of aqua in a verdant backyard. And cooling off in refreshing ripples of water when the Heartland sun blazes down during the summer months? Even better. But when one couple purchased a Leawood home a few years ago, they decided to forego the splashy amenity. The couple, whose kids were nearly grown, were downsizing from a larger home with a spacious pool to a smaller home with a nice grassy backyard. However, it wasn’t long before the homeowner, a former Kansas City professional baseball player, and his wife were rethinking their decision. After seeing a neighbor’s pool and realizing they missed having a pool for relaxing and exercising, the couple decided to upgrade their backyard space. They wanted to enhance their outdoor living amenities and add on to the outdoor kitchen and covered patio they had already implemented after purchasing the house. Their three children were older and two were out of the house, but the homeowners still enjoyed entertaining friends and family. So they enlisted the bi-state assistance of Backyard by Design in Overland Park, Kan., and Blue Springs, Mo.’s SwimThings.

The home’s backyard presented a compact, rectangular space to work with, so the couple sought a pool that would complement the yard design. “They liked the clean lines of a rectangular pool,” says Vince Davenport, president of family-owned SwimThings. “They basically wanted something that would fit well in the space, including a hot tub they could use year-round. They also liked the sound of water and the idea of a serene garden setting.” SwimThings designed and installed a heated 18-by-36-foot gunite pool with a marbled midnight blue finish. While the pool’s deepest point is five feet, the rich hue gives the illusion of expansive depth. Frost-proof 6-by-6-inch ceramic tiles were used at the waterline while a natural travertine tile border frames the elegant pool and spa. Rounding out the salt water pool’s features are steps, a lap lane, a sun ledge and cozy spa at the shallow end of the pool and a custom copper sheer descent waterfall at the deep end.

Backyard by Design completed the pool decking with Belgard Mega Lafitt pavers in natural Aspen Blend, complementing the project’s Mediterranean-inspired appeal. A rough cedar pergola graces the side of the pool and offers an intimate setting for reading or relaxing conversation. Backyard by Design emulated the style from a pergola the homeowners spotted in a magazine. The cedar structure features breezy lattice, a fan, comfy ®

cast aluminum Hanamint seating and an audio system feeding from the residence. “We basically created the pergola with a nice little seating area to fit the space,” says Todd Higgins, president of Backyard by Design. “Also the lattice was designed to match the latticework on the back side of the house.” The 9-foot-tall pergola offers an airy 7-by-14-foot space steeped in alluring shade and shadows. Serbian spruce trees, rose bushes and other picturesque landscaping adorn the fence line and grant plenty of privacy to the property. The natural stone wall and calculated elevation changes along the backyard’s perimeter provide aesthetic appeal and discreet water drainage solutions away from the house and outdoor living areas. All told, between the pool, hardscaping and landscaping, the backyard project — which in good weather would take two months — took about four months to complete. Despite weather-related construction setbacks during the winter months, the stylish outdoor pool and patio were completed just in time for spring’s arrival, much to the homeowners’ delight. The couple has since been enjoying their splendid sanctuary, now a welcoming retreat for cooling off on hot days, grilling favorite foods and spending time outdoors with guests. Davenport says achieving the perfect pool environment is dependent upon thorough assessment of personal needs. “What kind of yard size are you working with?” asks Davenport. “How are you going to use the pool? Will there be kids using it? Is it for grandkids? Do you anticipate entertaining? You need to really evaluate the size, depth and style that will work best for you.” Once the luxurious transformation is complete, there is only one thing left to do: Enjoy. 40

Shinneman and her team took out a couple of walls and opened up the family room, not only creating its spacious feel, but also allowing for additional lighting from the sun. The original floor plan was rather circuitous in that in order to access the dining room from the kitchen, one had to make a U-turn walk of sorts through the den and around the other side. In the remodeling process, the wall perpendicular to the den was torn out, opening up the kitchen to the dining room and ultimately to the family room. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We closed off the doorway to the den and opened up the space into the dining room,â&#x20AC;? noted Shinneman. That accommodation led to an increase in natural lighting, which was truly needed to brighten up the space. While the kitchen, dining room and family room enjoy a wide variety of decorative lighting fixtures, it is the sunlight that truly adds the perfect balance of warmth and glow.

We each have a place and do our part,” he shared of the family business. Mark One Electric has a 65-year history and has been owned by the Privitera family for 35 of those years. Tony and his siblings, Roseanna, Joe, and Carl, all started working in the family business as teens, and continued into more prominent roles as adults. Throughout the years, the family bought many undervalued commercial properties in the area, fixed them up and then made them available for lease. “Both businesses are growing, and equally important, one does not overshadow the other,” Privitera explained of the family’s business interests. If it seems like it would take a full team of people to manage all of the efforts, it does. The size of the task does not deter him however. “My siblings and I work in unity. In fact, if you asked any one of us a question you would very likely get the exact same answer. We are that in tune, that united in what we do. I think that is what makes the business successful –– unity and continuity. It is not about one of us. It is about the betterment of the business, and that is about each of us.” In talking to Privitera, there is a definite sense of history, of being grounded to the past, and linked to the future. A trait he says was instilled in him by his father. “It is about hard work now and saving for the future. My dad used to ask, ’When is it time to save money? When you have it.’ That is something we live by,” Privitera passionately shared. Success may not come easy, but it can come. hen Jackie Beucher landed an inside sales job with Earle M. Jorgensen Company in 1973,

the metal distribution company had to virtually rewrite the rules, because Jackie was breaking

every one of them. “It is still a male-dominated industry, and a woman in sales was almost unheard of. Women were to be secretaries, and were not to eat or smoke at the desk, and certainly not work in sales. I did all of those things,” she laughed. Not only did she work in sales, where most predicted she would not last three months, she excelled. I was promoted to outside sales three years later, when I soon earned one of many “Salesman” of the Year awards. Many of my competitors thought I wouldn’t last long. I proved them wrong for over 23 years in that job. In 1998, her boss asked her to develop business for the aircraft industry, and in the face of opposition, made the division a highly competitive and successful venture for the company. “I guess you can say I have been a trail blazer for 45 years, and have enjoyed every minute of it,” Beucher soundly affirmed. Beucher’s interests span a wide range of areas, but all reflect her willingness to embrace a challenge and not be confined to the expectations of others. “In my spare time, I also participate in the American Legion Riders and the Patriot Guard Riders,” explaining they were interests introduced to her by her ex-husband. Never satisfied to stay still, another passion, astronomy, plays an important role in her life. “I joined the Astronomical Society of Kansas City in 1984, just in time for Halley’s Comet. The ASKC is one of the largest and most active groups of amateur astronomers in the country and own Powell Observatory, which has one of the largest club telescopes and viewing sites in the Mid-West.” Beucher often volunteers at the observatory, which offers many educational programs to the community. It is open every Saturday night to the public. Astronomy has also taken her all over the world, serving as a guide on Full Eclipse tours which occur anywhere on Earth, often in remote locations. “I have had the pleasure of leading tours to magnificent places like Tahiti, Aruba, Greece, Australia, China, and even Siberia. It has been an amazing pleasure to travel and share my passion in Astronomy with others,” she reflected. The adventurer has also served 13 years as a National Officer for the Astronomical League which comprises nearly 2000 societies throughout the world. While she loves her home, and has a special fondness for gardening, she is always ready for the next big adventure.

Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an award-winning sauce creator, private chef, culinary instructor, founding member of the Kansas City Food Artisans; and member of the Flavor Trade team, a company that exists to help small businesses and entrepreneurs with co-packing, incubation, and distribution of their goods in Kansas City.

KCHS: KIMBALL: Be creative. By using two zone and three zone cooking areas, you can control the quality of the finished product. I often use the indirect heat zone to reverse sear steaks, this allows more smoke flavor penetration into the meat before you final sear it over the high heat zone. KCHS:

KIMBALL: Planking delicate meats and cheeses to infuse natural flavors will elevate the quality of taste. Try alderwood planked salmon or trout, or try applewood planked soft cheese like Gouda, cheddar or mozzarella. Another great way to infuse natural flavor is to cook with herbs. Use rosemary sprigs instead of skewers for beef and vegetable kabobs, or toss sprigs of rosemary, sage or thyme over your fire while grilling. This will impart a great taste into your meats. KCHS:

KIMBALL: Overcooking seems to be the biggest mistake in grilling. Understanding carryover cooking can help solve this problem. For instance, to cook a 1 1/2” steak to a perfect 132 F. medium rare, I would remove it from the grill when the internal temperature reaches 127 F. During the resting period, a large cut of meat will carryover cook and increase in temperature by up to 5 degrees. KCHS: KIMBALL: Cooking burgers, chicken and pork to 180 F. for safety is not necessary, you will cook the natural juices and flavor right out! Try cooking burgers to no more than 155 F. Marinated peaches or pineapple, grilled over fruitwood are absolutely delicious. Top them with a scoop of homemade ice cream and a drizzle of port wine glaze! Smoked cheesecake is often requested for our backyard parties. After you’re done grilling your meal, cool your grill to below 120 F., add some fruitwood like peach or apple, add your cheesecake and cover with the grill lid. It only takes about 10 minutes to infuse some good smokiness into the cheesecake. The colder the cheesecake is before smoking, the longer you can leave it on the grill. I will move my cheesecake from the refrigerator to the freezer for a couple hours and then right to the smoker. This will produce a dessert with a cool creamy center and a slightly melted, mild smoky piece of heaven!

Ask these questions in order to better understand your HELOC:

What will cause the Prime index to go up? The interest rate on your HELOC is determined by adding

a margin to the Prime rate. This means that your interest rate will go up when the Prime rate goes up.

The Prime rate changes whenever the Federal Reserve changes their Federal Funds rate. The Fed has

kept its Federal Funds rate at or near zero percent for the past several years. The Fed has indicated that they'll be increasing the Fed Funds rate as the economy recovers. This means that as the economy continues to get better, the

interest rate on your HELOC is likely to go up.1

What happens after the initial draw period? Some HELOCs turn into amortized mortgages after the initial

draw period. This means that your monthly payment would probably go up dramatically from where it

is now if you are currently making interest-only payments. Other HELOCs must be paid off after the

initial draw period because a “balloon” payment will be due. It’s important to find out if you can keep the HELOC (albeit with a much higher payment), or if you’ll be forced to refinance or pay off the HELOC at the end of the

initial draw period.

What would be my blended interest rate if I keep the HELOC? Your blended interest rate is determined

by your total interest expense on all of your loans. For example, assume you locked in a very low mortgage

rate on your first mortgage. Is it really worth it to have two loans instead of one if your HELOC will be

re-amortizing and the interest rate is likely to go up? You may want to consider whether you can combine the two

loans into one and walk away with a lower blended interest rate on both of your loans combined.

What would be my total monthly payment if I keep the HELOC? There will likely be a cash flow difference one way or another if you keep the HELOC or if you combine it into your first mortgage. The1extra cash

flow can be used to invest or pay down principal. The only way1to find out is to ask the question!
