PUBLISHER’S MESSAGE BY RENEE DEMOTT
relax
to rest, unwind, rejuvenate There’s nothing better than taking the time to splurge and soak yourself in a warm, relaxing bath. And the bathrooms these days lend themselves just to do that. The invitation they extend to us…turn on that faucet, fill up the tub and let those daily worries drift away. Inside this issue you’ll find five bathrooms that say come in and stay awhile. Free standing tubs, stunning tile and roomy showers all speak the language we understand –– we’re here to pamper you. Check them out on pages 49-54. And while bathrooms weren’t the only prerequisite for this modern Beacon Hill home that has four full baths; one indulging in a two-person air/water jetted tub with LED lights and music, they definitely add to the style of the home. Built on a corner lot and housing an inviting deck and pool, this home welcomes you when you walk through the door. Take your own tour on page 20. The days are getting cooler and the night air a tad crisper, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to stay inside. It means just the opposite –– it’s time to get outside and take advantage of these precious fall days with the glowing autumn colors they afford. Now is the perfect time to dig out those hiking boots and head over to a trail. From paved to crushed rock to rough terrain, there are plenty of places to lose yourself for a few hours or even a whole day. Not sure what to wear? Check out our hiking finds (page 82) and a checklist to look over before you head out (page 84). After a day on the trail, it’s time to put your feet up by the fire. From fire pits to fireplaces, there’s nothing that warms the soul like the beauty of fire. We found six that we were drawn to plus many free standing fire pits in styles that spark the desire to have one of your own (page 33). Ready to get into the Christmas spirit? Turn the pages and walk into a winter wonderland at JCYM’s Home for the Holidays tour, and these other area holiday tours. This stunning Californiacontemporary gem makes its mark on Beacon Hill STORY BY
Rachael Hedgcoth PHOTOS BY
Samantha Stultz on Wratchford never imagined that a Kansas City snowstorm would lead him to his next home, but that’s exactly what happened in February 2015. “There was a really bad snow storm a year and a half ago and I got turned around and ended up in Beacon Hill,” said Wratchford. A Kansas City Northland resident for most of his life, Beacon Hill, located just southeast of downtown Kansas City, Mo., was a fresh discovery for Wratchford. He quickly became enamored with the rolling terrain, the upscale residential development and the diverse urban vibe of the historic neighborhood. A single father with a grown son and daughter, Wratchford had turned his relocation sights toward the Kansas City horizon. And thanks to the city’s aggressive redevelopment plan for Beacon Hill, generous property tax breaks made Wratchford’s decision to purchase a quarter-acre lot even more lucrative. “I just decided it was time for Dad,” said Wratchford.

towers and a two-person air/water jetted tub with LED lights and music. The suite’s walk-in closet has zebra-print carpet as well as multiple built-in drawers, sliding shoe racks and a built-in tie rack –– further testament to Wratchford’s penchant for organization. One of the main floor’s most eye-catching elements is the 48-foot-long gallery which is punctuated by 12 feet of sliding glass doors and 12 feet of windows framing the sparkling cobalt pool. “Basically, over half the space of that hall is windows and doors,” said Wratchford of the unique design. “The hallway has about 200 square feet of windows and natural light so it feels like being outside with the pool just steps away.”
I ANYTHING BUT ORDINARY I Upstairs, three artfully-appointed bedroom suites with walk-in closets ensure guests will enjoy plenty of space as well as panoramic vistas of downtown Kansas City and Crown Center. An open-concept staircase outfitted with dark oak stair treads and chrome closet rod railings connects all three floors and serves as a focal point of the home. “Randy and I came up with that on the fly,” said Wratchford of the unusual design. “We were just messing around and we needed to meet the building codes.” The end result is a commanding pattern of linear compositions, smart style and contoured shadows thanks to the stairwell windows.

The staircase continues to the cozy lower level retreat where a theatre area, stylish bar, dance floor, seating area and full bath set the stage for quiet, conversational or lively intermissions from life’s daily grind. Full of daylight, the lower level’s subtle shades of gray and impeccable décor reinforce the home’s overall sense of serene composure. Outside, the courtyard offers an al fresco dimension that begs for family, friends, good food and great times. The rectangular pool, outdoor kitchen and seating area, smoker, grill and fire pit make the refreshing retreat an ideal year-round escape. Patio lighting and LED uplighting on the home’s front and side add further illumination at nightfall.
I INSPIRING ENVIRONS I In the short time he’s lived in the home, the good-natured, gracious homeowner has hosted several gatherings. “I already know far more neighbors than I ever did in the Northland,” said Wratchford. Happy with his relocation decision, he is drawn to the diversity, cordial culture and raw energy of the Beacon Hill and Union Hill neighborhoods. “It’s very sociable and very urban,” said Wratchford. “It’s about the most diversified place I’ve ever been. Everyone has front porches and people are always out.” At the end of the day, Wratchford achieved his goal of creating a residence that eloquently exemplifies the hallmarks of contemporary architecture: dynamic and eclectic yet also understated and wonderfully livable. His luxurious home fits right into the urban mix of renovated traditional homes, historic Kansas City houses and trendy modern housing. “Don is a builder’s dream,” said Dalrymple of working with Wratchford. “He understands the process, knows what he wants and has the vision to make it happen.” He added that the character of this California-contemporary residence is part of what makes it, and other Beacon Hill homes, so special. “Think of Beacon Hill as a gallery of art pieces,” said Dalrymple. “Everything is custom and has its own character. Each architect has done his magic on these houses.” For Wratchford, that magic couldn’t be more perfect. “It’s like living at a resort in the middle of the city,” said Wratchford. “You can literally lay in bed and look out the door and see the pool just 20 feet away. It’s a great way to start the day.”

After they saw a spectacular outdoor fire place at a neighbor’s home, this family knew they had to have Land Design Group (LDG) design and install one in their Overland Park backyard. “The homeowners love to crackle the fire and wanted a wood burning fireplace and dining area, along with a pergola,” noted Chris Feldkamp, owner of LDG, whose team went to work on constructing this fully custom-made rugged yet stylish design that encourages lots of family time for nearly year-round usage. Not quite the traditional outdoor fireplace, this contemporary and warm design has the confidence to simply be itself. After the three fire sculptures draw you in with their mesmerizing silhouette effect, you then become aware of all the beauty that surrounds this space, from the natural stone to the evergreen landscaping. Created by Maverick Landscaping and Outdoor Living, owner and designer Maverick Pickering brought together a palette of colors and textures to appeal to the client’s contemporary tastes. Giving the homeowner a backyard gathering spot that would architecturally complement the home yet still remain functional for this Leawood family resulted in this comfy backyard gathering spot designed and installed by Stonebridge Outdoor. The circular patio and curved hearth with sitting wall seem to embrace you and invite you to sit down and relax for a while as the wood burning fireplace and contrasting dark charcoaled mortar and lighter colored fieldstone mimic somewhat of a fairytale setting that makes you feel as if you are nestled in the woods on a cozy autumn day. For a family that spends an appreciable amount of time at the lake camping out and enjoying the great outdoors, it was time to recreate that feeling right at home. Curtis Stroud, an owner of Rosehill Gardens, gave his Overland Park backyard that same feeling with this lake house-like fire pit so he and his family can keep the lake tradition alive at home. Intentionally created with a feeling of seclusion, it sits away from the house and the neighbors, surrounded by appreciable plant materials and trees that definitely provide the feeling of “We’re camping!” ROSEHILL GARDENS PHOTOS COURTESY OF ROSEHILL GARDENS

Passionate about the outdoor life, the residents of this Cedar Creek home in Olathe knew they wanted a backyard that catered to that desire. Partnering with B.L. Rieke Custom Homes and Rosehill Gardens landscape professionals, the owners had a pool house built, complete with a wood burning fireplace, all architecturally designed to mimic the style of the home. In addition to the fireplace structure, Rosehill Gardens also installed all of the landscaping to truly make this the perfect place to feel as if you are surrounded by nature while you relax at the end of the day with a refreshing beverage. Relax, unwind and wash away your worries –– the bathroom is more of an experience than simply a room.
Like it or not there’s a lot of time spent in the
bathroom, much of it in the shower or in front of
the mirror. So it’s no wonder design has worked its way into this room, making bathrooms a place where we can relax or invigorate ourselves.
They’ve taken on a personality all of their own with the endless options for lighting, sinks,
tubs, showers, cabinets, and vanities. Colorful,
contemporary, elegant or bold, the style is up to
you. Turn the pages and become motivated and inspired –– you might just find the perspective you need to create what could potentially be the best seat in the house!
Schloegel Design Remodel PROJECT DESIGNER:
At first glance, it’s tough to know whether
this is a bathroom or a work of art. Although designed and installed by Schloegel Design Remodel, and overseen by designer Megan Bringman, the bathroom’s primary occupant, a 14-year-old boy in the family, had his say in the final product. “He definitely had a vision for everything in this space,” expressed Bringman, who, together with the client, produced a winner, artfully incorporating into this full bath an espresso-colored vanity with side pullout storage; a Corastone countertop with matte finish; pendant lighting and round mirror partnered with blue linear tile that adds a decided layer of personality. Noble Designs PROJECT DESIGNER:
A decided layer of warmth and comfort is written all over this master bathroom. The long and narrow space provides so much in terms of form and function. The large slate, charcoal-colored tile wall behind the mirrors –– definitely a visual treat –– stands in stark contrast to the linear light fixtures and vessel sinks set atop a floating walnut vanity. “The clients were looking for a more modern look to the space,” noted designer Sara Noble of Noble Designs, who worked with Melissa Thiede and Roy Cashman on the design of their bathroom. Complete Renovations was the contractor responsible for the installation of this project. Even though there was not a significant amount of space with which to work in this bathroom, Noble Designs comfortably and stylishly brought it all together. “By changing out the fixtures to a beautiful and timely brass finish, all from Kitchens and Baths by Briggs, the bathroom was brought up to date,” Noble said of this older, yet classic home in Fairway, Kansas. Large windows at the rear embrace the free-standing soaker tub. The all-glass enclosed shower enjoys a porcelain tile finish, working in tandem with the porcelain tile flooring. The long runner rug adds a bit of warm color to the room.

Ramsey Interiors PROJECT DESIGNER:
When the homeowners of this Shawnee beauty wanted to take their outdated, floral-inspired bathroom and transform it to something new, Kathleen Ramsey of Ramsey Interiors knew exactly what to do. “The clients have very contemporary tastes, which are reflected in this design,” expressed Ramsey, referring to the sleek color scheme joining a deep charcoal gray with white and hints of black. “The clients favor masculine textures and this color palette caters to that while still feeling light.” Replacing the old shower that used to be open to the ceiling is a closed-in feature now, accented by strong linear lines in the tile that show through the glass door. This zero-entry shower is glass enclosed with a partial wall for privacy, and stands adjacent to a large glass window that allows extra lighting into the space. The same decorative tile was used behind the large soaker tub, which replaced the old Jacuzzi tub. All of the tile accents in the bathroom were custom designed, including the herringbone pattern in the floor, that lends a subtle hint of texture. Additionally, the existing cabinets were painted black and a tower was added to one of the vanity areas. The contrasting torque vanity countertops by Cambria continue to support the contemporary feel of the space. A paisley wall paper decorates the toilet room and all plumbing fixtures were supplied by Kitchens and Baths by Briggs.

Classic Kitchens Design Studio PROJECT DESIGNER:
This 20-year-old Overland Park residence has good reason to smile. With a recent master bathroom makeover, it is probably one of the most inviting rooms in the house! Homeowner Susan Winterman was fully engaged in the remodeling process, choosing all of the finishes and working side-by-side with designer Pam Vernon of Classic Kitchens Design Studio. “I wanted to update the bathroom and add clean lines in a classic, yet not overly-done, way,” expressed Winterman. “It’s now a very pretty and soothing room. I really love it.” Vernon confidently took to the task of making this a very elegant and entirely usable space. The former L-shaped vanities were removed and replaced with separate his and hers vanities. An oval-shaped window was added to invite more light into the area and to add style while a new window over the tub replaced the original window. Additionally, the ceiling was raised in the center to house a beautiful chandelier and to uniquely synchronize with the sophisticated feeling of the room.

Custom Renovations PROJECT DESIGNER:
When the owners of this Leawood residence wanted to put their love of modern,
contemporary styles to work, they definitely let it show in this stunning master bathroom. After employing the custom design expertise of Custom Renovations by Kenny Choikhit, the highlights of the room speak for themselves. Taking center stage is the Bain Ultra tub, an air tub that, unlike one outfitted with water jets, blows air through tiny holes. Accent colored lights within the tub offer relaxing light therapy. Floating walnut shelves above the tub give a strong nod to the homeowners’ tastes, providing a feeling of simplicity while simultaneously making a bold statement. The curbless walk-in shower adheres to the clean lines appeal, set atop a porcelain tile flooring that takes your gaze to the walnut vanity, adorned with a Caesarstone quartz counter top and accented by two separate mirrors framed in the same walnut material. Even though the overall lighting in the room is perfect for evening, the owners still wanted the daylight to shine through. “We put a window above the vanity to allow some natural light to flow into the room,” noted Choikhit. The vanity also has a great inset shelf or niche area, perfect for storing a few extra towels.

Architectural Craftsmen PROJECT DESIGNER:
This stunningly sleek master bathroom with a decided monolithic presence has class and style written all over it. Design and installed by Architectural Craftsmen, this bathroom is a show-stopper with its harmonious color palette of gray, taupe and tan all complementing the clean lines that always give your eyes something unique and appealing to see without overwhelming them. Completed as a dramatic makeover for a formerly darker and outdated bathroom, the owners wanted to create a more uniform and solid look, which was accomplished by an appreciable number of breath-taking changes. “Where the large shower is now was formerly where the oversized, built-in tub used to be,” noted Mary Thompson, of Architectural Craftsmen. “The old shower was clear at the back of the bathroom and was much smaller and darker.” The new shower is truly a dream, its solid form coupled with enough aesthetic appeal to add a layer of fun without distracting from the consistency of style. The spacious vanity with vessel sinks atop an impressive piece of quartz, coupled with the artistic tile throughout bathroom (those effervescent bubbles made of marble, porcelain and glass tiles on the shower floor won’t go unnoticed!) speak to an element of fun while pulling all of the pieces together. The former high ceiling was brought down on the vanity side with the clever incorporation of a soffit, accented by linear pendant lights. The personality of the chandelier above and the dark tower storage cabinet complete the look. 54

Craig describes this contemporary Wolfgang Trost designed home as a museum. It abounds in art work and sculpture at every turn. His approach to decorating it for the holidays? –– “Keep it simple and make a focal point!” For Craig, the perfect placement of an object says as much as the object itself. As an example, the location for a vessel may need to be low enough to see down into it to appreciate and enjoy the design fully. One word of advice from Craig is that you purchase things you love! Styles change but you will always enjoy your surroundings if you follow your instincts.
Welcome to artful living in this striking contemporary home. Amazing interiors include art walls, soaring ceilings, walls of glass, architectural lighting, artist fixtures and custom ironwork.

with curved walls and eye-catching art and craftsmanship. The fascinating floor-to-ceiling elliptical walls and windows lead into the living and dining room areas. Conversation groupings surround the modern fireplace and offer panoramic views of the yard and pool. Furnishings in golds and cerise create beautiful contrast, form and texture. The vaulted beamed ceiling and classically elegant lighting warm the room for gracious living. Not to be missed is a painting over the console table as well as the two long pieces hanging between the kitchen windows. Commissioned by an artist in Vail, Colorado, these exceptional works of art encapsulate the enduring design seen throughout the beautiful home. There are uniquely painted walls in the hall leading into the master bedroom. This sleek, tailored room includes a door to a private martini deck. The master bath continues the luxurious finishes with a recessed ceiling, intriguing wall treatment, soaking tub and modern leaded glass windows. The husband’s office with clean lines and dark surfaces showcases his sports memorabilia. A hospitality wet bar is a gathering spot accessible to a deluxe modern kitchen. It features a free-form island, cone pendant lights, contemporary cabinetry and chef-inspired high-end appliances. The hearth room adjoining the kitchen includes an inviting oval table and additional sectional seating. A soaring fireplace features an offset heavy mantel and three-dimensional objet d’art. TUSCANY RESERVE 3406 W. 138th Street, Leawood, Kansas The beauty and color of the asymmetrical landscape design, added to the warmth of the iron gate, lanterns and front door, instantly draw you into this lovely Leawood home. Columns, archways and pitched ceilings allow for the vast openness of the large living space of the main level. Dove gray tones in the dining and living rooms are accented with soft goods in shades of blue and green and furniture with mixed finishes of stone, wood and mirror, all resulting in comfortable conversation spaces. Gorgeous light fixtures throughout the home direct your eyes up to the interestingly enhanced ceilings of different colors and textures. A walk through bar is centrally located and accessible to the living room, dining room, kitchen and casual eating space, allowing for easy entertaining. The trompe l’oeil design of the wallpaper in the bar gives the walls and arches the effect of aged stone. Each of these beautiful living spaces is defined by sculpted area rugs on the rough-hewn wooden floors. In the kitchen, the rich flowing colors of the granite countertops are repeated in the contrasting light and dark finishes of the cabinetry and island. The apron-front sink and beautiful wood paneled refrigerator doors give this workspace a well-designed, custom look. The cozy hearth room is wrapped in windows and anchored with a stacked stone fireplace. Also on the main level is the gorgeous master bedroom suite. Mixed textures of tone-ontone bedding give this room an elegant yet comfortable ambiance. An interlocking geometric design crowns the ceiling, giving yet another example of the designer’s attention to detail. In the master bath a footed tub, crystal lighting, artistic mirrors, along with marble and tile detailing in the shower, make this an attractive, functional space. The stairway leading to the patio and lower level is overlooked by a curved balcony at the top and panels of beveled mirrors on the wall. The peaceful garden patio is a tranquil retreat encompassed by privacy plantings, a stone fountain, fireplace and areas for seating and dining. The expansive lower level boasts a combination kitchen/bar, family room with a

A graduate of De Paul University, she has worked on many plays in Chicago and St. Louis including Disney’s Aladdin. When given the basic idea of wanting to create a life-sized, walk-through storybook of The Night Before Christmas, Marianna researched vintage drawings to find a style that complimented the décor of Kristen Ridler as well as the architecture of this Rodrock home. SUMMERWOOD ESTATES 12711 W. 160th Terrace, Overland Park, Kansas Picture yourself in a luxurious retreat high atop a majestic mountain. That is exactly how you will feel as you open the mahogany front door to the aptly named Telluride-styled home. As you enter, there is an ethereal quality to the floating staircase and the delicately suspended twenty-two foot cascading light fixture in the grand foyer. The floor of the study is a warm blend of multi-species wood that reflects the glow of the contemporary lighting. The openness of the floor plan allows for a spacious view of the dramatic great room and lanai, each one enhanced with natural rock fireplaces. Reclaimed 1920’s Missouri barn wood above the mantel adds texture and history to this residence. The family dining area also opens to the lanai with large sliding doors. KCH&S October/November 2016
KCHS: FREEBERN: This year, Christmas colors and decorations are very much inspired by popular home shows, and the styles they showcase, especially by the aesthetics of Joanna Gains. The trends reflect a clean, farmhouse look with lots of galvanized accents. KCHS:
FREEBERN: Certainly, getting a certain look takes time, direction, and effort even for professional decorators. However, getting the farmhouse look is very possible, and a fun process. Start by thinking about how to add more sentiment without overfilling the tree. The look is casual and old fashioned. We are seeing the use of retro looking plaid buffalo ribbon and lots of red berries to bring this look together.
A Victorian Christmas in Leavenworth KCHS: FREEBERN: My favorite looks this year hit both sides of the spectrum. I love the old fashioned look and we are featuring that look in store with our focal point tree in white and decorated with 18 old fashioned churches, and lots of organic accents like Paper Birch logs tied with ribbon. Another of my favorite looks is a bit more glammy, using turquoise and peacock feathers. KCHS: FREEBERN: Of course we are still seeing lots of reds, but another popular trend is gray and cream and leanings toward more natural colors like green and brown. The decorations are simple, like dough bowls filled with pine cones, lanterns, and the use of burlap. Magnolias are also extremely popular this year and you will see them in garlands and wreaths. KCHS: FREEBERN: At home I am adding a Charlie Brown tree, with open wispy branches. It will have the farmhouse look. Very vintage and old fashioned. In fact, I am using a galvanized tub instead of a tree stand.

For businesses, Miller can create an environment that is distinctive and unique; which is the outcome of collaboration with business owners in order to meet the businesses’ objectives. “I will want to know what makes you stand above your competition,” she explained. “The interior design of the space your business occupies is either an asset or a liability. It’s not about what you own, it’s about how you create a warm and welcoming place to gather, share stories and laughs. It’s about the memories you create.
This approach is what starts a project and leads it to a successful conclusion, even when working in a particular discipline of interior design for the first time. It is why when working as one of the architectural Project Manager’s working on projects for a national retail chain it was stated to Miller that she had received more complements from the client than all the other Project Managers (six total) put together. Or why the interior design reviewer at the Louisville Army Corp of Engineers with 15 experiences as a reviewer stated, “We finally found someone to do this work” while working on their Department of Defense projects. chiefs time Score a touchdown with a successful watch party
Like any party, planning with as much detail as you can is a huge factor in the success of the event. For a Chiefs watch party, that includes getting the invitations out, and the rsvps back, early. Knowing how many people you’ll be accommodating will help you with everything that follows from food to beverages to seating. A lot of folks might think planning and organization are one and the same. I disagree. You can have everything planned out perfectly with plenty to eat and drink and lots of seating options for the game watchers and the few who don’t, but if your timing is off

or your primary food isn’t ready at halftime (the only window you have), you could be left with a lot of food people don’t eat or some unhappy Chiefs crazies being dragged away from the game at an inopportune time. In other words, don’t bring a knife to a gun fight. I love fine wine, specialty cheeses and trying new recipes. But, if the crowd loves beer, pizza and chicken wings then give them what they love. Except for Moscato and White Zinfandel. That, I cannot and will not serve! I know this sounds contradictory to what I just said, but hear me out. If you’ve got a group that’s looking for pizza and wings, that’s fine, but don’t settle for mediocre carry out fare. If you like to bake, find a pizza dough recipe and make it the night before. For the wings, buy fresh at the store, brine them in some water with salt and sugar for a couple hours, pat them dry, sprinkle them with a good all-purpose dry rub, then grill them up. They’re great just like that, but you can also serve a nice hot sauce on the side. Want to try something different? How about substituting the Louisiana hot sauce for a Primal Cried Thai hot sauces or the Born with Seoul Korean Gochujang sauce. Oh my!

Do Your Research There are hundreds of trails around Kansas City and surrounding areas. Area parks and lakes have plenty to choose from that range from paved to crushed limestone to rocky terrain. If you’re looking for a weekend getaway, Kansas and Missouri have plenty to choose from that are within a 3 hour drive that will afford you a full day of exercise and the beautiful scenery of the season.
Tech Is Your Friend We’ve all been there. You are strolling along, taking pictures of the beautiful colors of the landscape and you look up and are completely turned around. Don’t fret my little wanderer. You can find a GPS on almost anything these days –– watches, phones and specialty GPS products. Note: Always tell someone you know where you will be hiking and when you expect to return. Check in with them so they know you are safe. And speaking of pictures, yes your phone can take some pretty decent photos, but don’t forget about Mother Nature and her surprise pop up showers. If your phone or camera isn’t waterproof, be sure to carry a waterproof bag to slip it into so it stays safe and dry. Finally, make sure to download this bad boy before you venture out.

only makes it amazingly simple to see the degree of difficulty and length of the trails, but also allows you to download maps and gives you ratings of each one. So awesome!

Pack The Right Gear You’ve reached a high cliff and you want to stop, rest a minute and take it all in. For those really wanting to relax for a bit, pack a lightweight stowable hammock –– they can be assembled in seconds, and are super easy to pack. Warning: They’re incredibly comfy and you may nod off for a bit. Before you know it, dusk is approaching and you still have 6 miles to go. Not a great thing if you’re in the middle of the woods. If you’ve been outside at all, you know the bugs are out in full force and can be even more brutal in the middle of the woods. From flies to midges and ticks to chiggers, there’s nothing more irritating than nasty little insects bothering you the entire time. Keep yourself protected with insect repellant. Look for ones that contain DEET or if you prefer natural, there are herbal blends of essential oils that work together to discourage unwanted flies, mosquitoes and other insects. Also, wearing long sleeves and long pants will help thwart these pesky guys. When hiking long distances, it is always best to take extra care.

The last thing you want to do is be stuck in the middle of a trail with the sunlight quickly disappearing. Use extra precaution and carry a water and a weather resistant light of sorts. A head lamp is perfect for when the sun goes down and you need to keep your visibility as optimum as possible.
Hydration Is No Joke When you are active, you are quickly losing electrolytes. Before you even leave for the hike, it is important to drink at least a liter of water. You should take plenty of water with you as well. Aim at carrying enough water to enable you to arrive at the next source well hydrated, but not so much that you get there with a couple of

liters still to drink.
Dress Appropriately There are so many options now; it can be a bit intimidating to buy the right clothes for hiking. Especially with the weather changing the way it does this time of year. Start with a great pair of comfortable and rugged hiking boots. Make sure your feet stay dry with the right socks –– look for words like breathable, synthetic fiber or wool. Layering clothing is important too. Choose a lightweight, breathable jacket and remember, brighter is better
