WELCOME … WELKOM … VELKOMMEN … BIENVENUE … BENVENUTO … (by) WANDA JULIAN On behalf of international life-style and fashion magazine Contessa’s Court, and on my behalf as its U.S. Editor-in-Chief, as well as on behalf of my European counterpart Gordon Flynn, and our world-wide readership, I’d like to welcome Renaissance man William Maltese to our pages with his recurring Haute Men’s Fashion column. We should all be familiar by now with this author, artist, bon vivant, collector, entrepreneur, clothing designer, and fashion aficionado, if just as a result of him and his works having been featured in previous issues of our magazine: a review of his cookbook (one of seven), EVERYDAY GOURMET: A MEMOIR, in our September 2015 issue; his exceptional acrylic artwork in our October 2015; his Draqual Clothing/Accessory line and the review of his MEN, SEX & FOOD self-help book in our February 2016; and, the write-up of his candle collection, How to Look Good in Candlelight, found in this issue. Plus, you’ve likely seen the two-page spread promos for his No Boundaries Radio Show which he co-hosts every Wednesday night with Joanne “JoJo” Crockett.


CONTESSA’S COURT: You’re hardly a stranger to fashion, men’s and women’s, are you, William? WILLIAM MALTESE: I was very lucky to have been exposed to fashion at a very early age, both in the U.S. and abroad, allowing me an early peek into the world of haute-couture, including the famous fashion houses on the continent and their runway shows. In fact, I cut my teeth writing magazine articles, like my The Death of Bespoke Tailoring in the U.S., before I made the shift to writing books; and, of course, I was the fashion editor for the on-line QMO lifestyle magazine for quite some while. CC: Being friends with many an important icon in the fashion industry in the process? WM: Friends a bit of an overstatement, in that the fashion world is more often filled with nodding acquaintances than bosom buddies. Certainly, though, it has been my pleasure to have been, at one time, on a “nodding basis” with Ingrid Sischy, Oscar de la Renta, L’Wren Scott, Calvin Klein, Halston, Alexander McQueen, Yves St. Laurent, Gianni Versace … certainly with more than my share of fashionista and fashionisto, especially during my Studio 56 days. CC: Having allowed you to write more than one novel with the fashion industry as backdrop? WM: I’ve published three such novels, so far: My Stud Draqual Crimes of Fashion mystery series (A SLIP TO DIE FOR and THAI DIED with RUNWAY SHOOT in the works), and my Vlad Draqual (cousin to Stud) vampirein-fashion series The Draqual Vampyre Chronicles. Presently, too, I’m under contract with traditional publisher Wildside Press to do my novel HINTERLAND MODELING CONTEST: ONE JUDGE’S PERSPECTIVE, as well as my non-fiction work MALTESE ON MEN’S FASHION. What’s Haute?

Smith Chapeau season is upon us, but are they “whoa” for you, or a “go?” With temps still a trifle chilly we can still rock the felt fedoras which come in a variety of styles, with wide brims, not so side brims, feathers adorning them or a simple unadorned hat found in a myriad of colors. Or if a hippy chick resides inside, you might opt for the floppy wide brimmed boho chic look. After all Boho Chic is so in since Nicole Richie resurged the look a few seasons ago. And these hats go so great with the fringed vests, lacey long tunic tops and leggings. Or is the romance of days gone by more your cup of tea??? If that is the case you may fall in love with the classically chic cloche, (one of my favs) such a statement of mystery. And the cloche can be found in many different styles in and of itself, an asymmetrical style is just one of the many choices you’ll find when shopping this en vogue style. Neither of those your style, too girly you say, then try a wide brimmed felt style cowboy hat, so cool yet so absolutely aloof. After all cowboys wear these and not just as an affectation, its utilitarian right? Yet another style a little more played down, the newsboy cap is a little more casual yet still cute and fun. Speaking of cowboys, we were a couple sentences ago, there is the riding cap to choose from you know the one. Female equestrians sport them in their competitions. You can find them in all sorts of colors and patterns, some even sporting glitter and glam embellishments. But for the major girlie girl there are those that resemble structural buildings with pom poms adorning the bands, feathers that build to a peak, twisted spirals covered with glitter reaching for the sun. These are the chapeaus which resemble ones sported by the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, and her entourage. Personally we find these very appealing in their uniqueness and sheer beauty. Let us say that you are a tomboy and none of these are you, but you still want to be stylish in your choice. This next style might be a possible option for you; the glam baseball cap not like the everyday caps you find at Sporting Goods stores. These have longer bills, are adorned with glitter and gems and everything any girl would adore. So which is it?? With so many styles to choose from there surely has to be one you can fall in love with. One you can pull low on your forehead, hiding your eyes almost and smile coyly up at that person starting intently at you thinking to themselves, how stylish that woman is --love her chapeau. HAUTE MEN’S FASHION WILLIAM MALTESE Seeing Pattern in Patterns Pretty much everyone knows the rules of fashion. As example: don’t wear socks with sandals; an old coat is a lost cause; brown and black don’t mix; navy and black don’t mix; red and pink don’t mix; sweatshirts are exclusively for casual wear; men’s wear is just for men; only wear one bold color at a time; wear silver or gold jewelry, not both; don’t wear white between Labor Day and the advent of Spring; …and, of course, patterns don’t mix. As regards the latter, the reasoning behind it is evident to any man who has ever pulled pattern clothes from his wardrobe and scattered them haphazardly with one another to see just how glaringly uncomplimentary these contrasts can be when lumped together. Large and garish prints can resound louder than sonic booms. Largecollar print shirts can provide far too much of a good/bad thing. A perfect match of a print shirt, with neutral tie and trousers, can go catastrophic with any attempt to substitute a print for either of the neutrals. That said … all rules are made to be broken when and if no one is actually hurt in the bargain and no permanent damage is done to one’s reputation for fashion consciousness. In fact, men who risk rule-breaking are, more often than not, the stand-out leaders of fashion, where the majority of their peers are more comfortable with the safety inherent in merely blending in with the more conservative majority. Personally, when given the choice, I prefer to stand out in any crowd, even daring, on more than one occasion, to sort through my closet to find pattern pieces that actually “do” go together, drawing attention that’s not negative but that has actually provided compliments from people who have always thought mixing prints a taboo. Fashion synergy among patterns can often be achieved simply by combining a vertically blue-striped shirt with a gold/black diamond-patterned tie, or a simple black-and-white pin-drop shirt with a subtle gray-plaid tie. Once you’re assured you have the knack for such basic combinations that work, you can feel free to venture even farther out of the box. Not that there’s anything at all wrong with simply sitting back, and obeying ballyhooed rules, letting fashion trail-blazing be attempted by the rest of us. Admittedly, not every man is up to, or willing to, risk the tsk-tsks from family and friends who are firmly rooted in the more-accepted-and-traditional, albeit often-flawed, norms of the time. The choice is yours.

HOW TO LOOK GOOD IN CANDLELIGHT WILLIAM MALTESE In truth, there’s really no big secret about the how of looking exceptionally good in candlelight. Candle flames register around 1900 on the Kelvin Scale, which has them providing very warm and gentle reddish/yellow lights that are very complementary to human skin, concealing, unlike sunlight, human faults like large pores, acne, and facial fuzz. What’s more, the favorable effect is often enhanced by candles in ideal placements (mid-level and slightly above tabletops) that provide the most flattering light not only for people but for rooms. So, while we’re left with little choice but to look better in candlelight, such controlled by scientific principles, we do have the option of deciding just which candles will be doing the good deeds. Candles of various shapes, sizes, colors, and, even, fragrances are available just about everywhere. In fact, a recent Google search — Where do I buy candles? — provided about 51million (yep, million) alternatives. While some may correctly say that candlelight is candlelight is candlelight, I’ve opted an awfully lot for candles custom-made by the candle-maker, “Jfay” (since retired). Admittedly, my penchant for candles may well have some historic root in that my ancestors, way back when, before some incident (a witch burning?) soured them on their inherent ability, had a reputation for being candle-readers who could divine future events by noting how a candle flickered, how its wick burned, how its wax melted and/or pooled. Early on, I began celebrating the publication of many of my works by commissioning candles. While the candle for my novella A RENDERING OF SOULS might seem particularly appropriate, considering the storyline includes a human melted down for tallow … such as was reported as happening during the English Civil War, 1649-1657 … most of my candle collection has more to do with a book’s cover graphic than with any reference to any candle or candles in the text. One glaring exception, of course, is my WILLIAM MALTESE’S FLICKER: #1 BOOK OF ANSWERS, first in a projected series specifically centered around candle-reading, including a cast of shape-shifters, vampires, werewolves, witches, warlocks, ghouls, ghosts, a dragon, and even a chimera, as mysterious forces, in the badlands of central Washington State USA, around Dry Falls, begin siphoning all world-wide magic from the adult population and channeling it into a select group of teenagers without a clue as to how to control it. Not only did I commission a candle for the cover but a second, Blood and Chocolate, in honor of one charming adult vampire character, Gregory, who prefers the blood of a victim who eats Xocai®.



The first editions of the first two books in my Stud Draqual Crimes of Fashion mystery series, with a protagonist who owns his own silk-producing industry and is the head of a haute-couture house initially concerned with ladies’ silk lingerie but later branching out into women’s clothing and men’s ware, each got a candle. A SLIP TO DIE FOR warranted one chockablock with pseudo bullet holes. THAI DIED got a beautiful red candle echoing the book’s original cover that imaged a billowing red-silk backdrop. The spin-off series, The Draqual Vampyre Chronicles, showcasing Stud’s cousin, Vlad, a blood-sucker turned fashion designer whose runways shows often occur in abattoirs, came complete with its own coffin and stake-to-its heart. My extensive on-going collection, I would hope against hope, will provide me with enough good lighting to keep me looking good into old age. By the way, did I mention that candlelight exists within enough absence of light to cause the pupils to dilate? Pupil dilation is an indication of arousal that not only makes you more appealing to your partner of the moment but vice-versa? Just sayin’!
