Editor’s Letter This issue is dedicated to my mother, Katie, this month marking a year since she passed away. And a really great issue it is, too, with a cover of Madonna, and content filled with, among other things, the genuinely amazing designs of London’s Royal Fashion Day. The magazine and I have grown and changed a lot this past year, and I look forward to more changes as I follow my dreams and passions in the months ahead. Certainly, look for me to begin designing once again!

Model of the Month Sarah Swifty My name is Sarah Swifty or "Swifty" for short, I’m a 25 year old female model, born and raised in Nottingham. I have a full time job in the NHS, so modeling for me is a wonderful world full of many possibilities. If you can dream it, you can do it. My journey in modeling has been a whirlwind and I am loving every second, I’ve met so many lovely people along the way and made some friends for life. There is nothing better than leaving a shoot feeling that you have created something amazing with other like-minded artistic people. I will keep pushing my boundaries and exploring every opportunity that presents itself to me, I am so grateful for every single person that has supported me and kept me going when others have tried to knock me back. Every girl is beautiful, and I hope to use modelling as a way of showing that to the world. One of my idols is Beyonce, she’s fabulous, strong, and confident, and everything a woman should be. I’m really looking forward to what the future may hold and the new and exciting challenges it may bring. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of those that have stood by me and supported me (you know who you are) Onwards and Upwards.... the only limitations are the ones you set yourself.

Fine Artist of the Month
William Maltese
How long have you been producing art? I’ve been producing art for quite sometime, interested in it from a very early age. I remember as far back as grade school having painted a picture of a European castle atop a high escarpment that was judged first place by my peers. As far as becoming a professional artist, I never, originally, had that as a goal, or even as a vague intention, any more than I ever expected to become an internationally best-selling author. My art just kind of “happened”, my first sale occurring in South Korea, of all places, where a good friend of mine was very interested in bringing the work of several Korean artists to the United States; a lot of my paintings, since then, have ended up with buyers in the Orient. Then, of course, I found myself continually encouraged to “keep at it” by some very successful artists, in their own rights, and one specific gallery owner, all of whose opinions I respected. In a way, it’s ironic that at the time I began more extensively to travel the world, with access to all of the really great European museums and their great masterpieces, I’d already made the decision to devote less time to my art, more time to my writing, since it was easier to carry around writing accoutrements to the distant outposts of the world, than it was to lug along canvases, paints, brushes, and easels.
What mediums do you like to use and why? By way of the mediums in which I’ve worked, I remain genuinely fond of ink, graphite, or charcoal on paper or parchment, but I’ve done the majority of my work in acrylics on canvas, mainly because I like the vibrant colors acrylics can provide, and possibly because that’s what I started out using.
What are some of your favorite subjects to paint? I did a series of plants and flowers which was popular, although I made it more interesting for me, and tapped the macabre side of my psyche, by selecting flora of a very poisonous kind. Once disconcerted about never having had a flower named after me, I painted an imaginary “Maltese Orchid” just to say there was one. Also, I’m genuinely fond of nudity, having drawn and painted a good deal of it, including a series of selfportraits when I was younger, fitter, and spent more time in front of a mirror. Many of these are just isolated innocuous body parts. There is, though, a more explicit series of those called, “Censored” which relies upon my painting technique to disguise the subject matter to a point where a lot of people, unless in-the-know, are without a clue and provide their own, less erotic, interpretation of the content; which is just fine with me — individual interpretation, after all, is what art is all about.
What inspires you? When I’m painting a commissioned piece (which is pretty much all I do, these days, by the way), any of those require inspiration provided by the subject a client has requested, but I can get, and have gotten, excited by a whole lot of things, as simple as the rain, Christmas-tree ornaments, fireworks, a horse’s head from the Elgin Marbles in the British Museum, a vampire bat, a grouping of Easter eggs, and especially the night sky. As regards the latter, it has been pointed out to me, more than once, that my work often resembles those galaxies, nebulae, gas clouds, and star clusters as recorded and relayed back to Earth, by the Hubble Telescope.
Do you have a preferred place to work while you’re doing your art? I’ve no specifically designated place, or actual static studio space, in which to work, but I usually require somewhere quiet, preferably indoors, just me and whatever, or whomever, the model. I get distracted easily, and my painting technique usually requires an awfully lot of concentration in placing an awfully lot of acrylic dots on canvas.
What are your favorite pieces that you’ve done? Call me narcissistic, but I did several self-portrait nude torsos of which I became so particularly fond that I almost didn’t sell them, despite buyers actually agreeing to pay the exorbitant prices I’d attached to each of them in expectation of keeping those particular paintings for my very own.
Are there artists who inspired you? Among the artists who’ve provided inspiration are Maximilien Luce, Hippolyte Petitjean, and George Lemmen.
Who are your favorite artists? As far as my favorite artists, I’d go with Praxiteles in sculpture, Caravaggio in painting. More contemporary, I’d opt for Kenneth Callahan, a northwest-school artist, whose works I once collected; I still have a die-hard penchant for his “horses”.
Do you have any favorite techniques that you like to use for your art? My work requires a lot of paint dots placed on the canvas, and I always welcome anything that can make that placement easier, whether it’s a new brush, an arm-rest, wrist-support, or a needle-thin paint-tube nozzle. I’m
known, too, for incorporating a lot of black in my work, into which a lot of my pictures seem to be dissolving; more often than not, I find myself starting out with a canvas that has been, or has almost been, entirely blacked out, working from there.
At what places have you had your art displayed? I was trying to think if there had ever been any displays of my work that have occurred outside the private residences in which the artwork was hung, and, you know, I really can’t recall a one. Mainly, because I’ve never, at any one time, acquired enough of a stockpile of unsold work to provide the quantity of pieces required for a viable exhibition. Usually, you’ll find me, especially these days, producing pieces, one at a time, at a client’s special request; the artwork out the door before hardly anyone, besides the buyer and I, see it, except, later, in the photographic (these days computer) record. I’ve had offers for retrospectives, but gathering up pieces distributed world-wide, only to get them returned undamaged to their owners, at show’s end, is just more of a task than I’ve ever wanted to see tackled, or likely ever will. There’s the possibility that I may take up one of the offers I’ve had recently to show prints, based upon my original artwork, especially since I’ve not only retained all rights to most of it but have serendipitously run across a printing company (owned and operated by two artists), that I feel I can trust to do a good job. Up until now, quality-control has been my major concern, as regards any prints, especially since the printer has to work with my photographic records which I would have been done differently if I’d ever originally had prints in mind. Recently, though, I had two almost simultaneous requests for a print of my “Stargazer Lily”, from my “Poison Plants” series, and I did a limited print-run of five that turned out well enough for me at least to contemplate making some future attempt as regards some of the others.
Do you have any traditional schooling for art or are you self-taught? I’ve not had any traditional schooling in art, per se, unless you want to include my exposure to commercial art in connection with the university degree I received in advertising/marketing. As for fine art, I do consider my associations with some mighty fine artists, both as a fellow artisan and as a collector, as an education in its own right. I had a school friend, Bruce Selchov, who skyrocketed, for a brief time, on the international art scene, before tragically bleeding out on someone’s couch. During our shared times, he introduced me to Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquat, Keith Haring, Robert Rauschenberg, and Roy Lichtenstein. For a long time, I lived in Seattle, Washington, USA, where I was taken under the wing of the city’s premier gallery owner, Gordon Woodside, who got me up close and personal with Paul Horiuchi, Carl and Hilda Morris, Paul Havas, Kathleen Gemberling Adkison, Guy Anderson, William Ivey….and all the Northwest School “mystics”: Kenneth Callahan, Morris Graves, William Cumming, and Mark Tobey. Also, I did a bit of modeling in my time, and there’s an existing private collection of over forty works, “Artists ‘do’ William Maltese”, contributed to by over thirty contemporary artists, based upon a couple of black-andwhite nude photos of me.
(William Maltese’s artwork is available exclusively on a referred-commission basis).

Help for Heroes By Gordon Flynn
GORDON - Can you tell us where you got the inspiration from for this show and why you choose that location? My inspiration has come from all directions. After years in the industry I've seen all the good and the bad sides to it and I was determined to do things differently. I took everything I had learned and threw the rule book out the window to make this something very personal to me. The location has long held a special place in my heart. It is beautiful and seemed the perfect choice for show. GORDON- can you tell us a bit about yourself and your history in the fashion Industry. I am a very down to earth person from a perfectly ordinary background. I have been modelling since a young age and I love the whole industry, but I have also seen the negative side of things, and I have a passion and determination to help shape things in a different direction. I want to put the fun back into fashion. GORDON- I know you arrange a lot of photoshoots . Tell us a little about this and what kind of shoots you like to do . I love my group shoots. I really enjoy the diversity of them and love watching different creations come together to produce some amazing images. Whatever location we are at I always make sure my groups shoots are fun, friendly and fab! GORDON- It seems like it must of taken a lot of work to pull a show like this together . Can you tell us a how you pulled it all together ? Ah yes, months of planning, most of which was all in my head. Once I got my team assembled and shared my vision with them it was full steam ahead, and six months after my vision it all came to life beautifully. GORDON- Can you tell us the Best and worst part of the show and getting it all together ? Oh there are so many good parts, but my personal favourite was when the first model (Elsa) walked out onto the floating catwalk. The breeze caught her veil, her smile beamed and the crowd gasped. It was just perfect. The worst moment was when one of my make up artists was stung by a wasp and needed to go to hospital. Luckily she soon recovered and came back like a trooper. GORDON - So tell us about the day. What was involved ? It's an industial secret! Haha! Seriously though, a lot of hard work went into it from me and my amazing team. The secret to a good show is lots of meticulous planning and attention to detail. It's often the little things which can make a day so special.
GORDON - what kind of reaction have you had so far from people about the show? The reaction has been amazing from everyone. The audience reaction on the day spoke for itself, with people gasping audibly at some of the designs being walked. Since the show I have had people stopping me on the street and in shops asking if I was the lady who organised 'that' fashion show and complimenting me on how great it looked. GORDON- What made you choose the diversity of designers and Models? For me personally I wanted the general public to be able to relate to the show, and to do that I had to take chances. As I mentioned earlier, I took the conventional rules for a fashion show and pretty much tore them up. Also I gave models and designers the chance to walk or showcase when they might not normally have been given a chance. GORDON- What was your favourite part of the day ? To be honest it was the opening of the show with Elsa floating down the catwalk, that was just perfect. But you know what, the whole show was perfect. My models did me proud, my designers rocked it, and my MUAs smashed it. As I said, perfect!

What’s Haute?
By Cheryl M. Smith This month we cover a growing trend the mystery of; Leggings, uncovering the truth….. There really is some confusion about this garment we women love. After all what’s not to love about the comfort, and now sooooo many styles to choose from. WE have the best jeans ever-- in the form of jeggings, they look like cute jeans and feel like sweats. There are corduroy ones, slim fitting and oh so soft, not at all like the ones the College Professors used to sport. And for fun style and warmth, we now have the latest and greatest addition; FLEECE leggings, in all sorts of colors and patterns. We see them in hounds tooth, different sizes of stripes from pinwale to wide-wale, windowpane, fun geometric pattern, and bright graphics. The styles are varied, and there are many to choose from so very stylish and warm. What leggings are NOT are what you will see in some of these photos, they are never sheer, and they are barely opaque at best. LEGGINGS cannot be seen through at all. And it is vividly evident some of you are confused by what we see out in public. We the general populous should not be privy to your private parts. Ladies please do refrain from sporting TIGHTS as leggings, or pants. Even if the department store has mislead you by attaching a tag that states they are leggings—these cute patterned tights simply are not leggings. Instead try our test we suggest in the next paragraph. The fool proof test--put them on your head, yes I said your head-- if you can visibly see thru them, they need to be worn with a dress or a long tunic please, they are still darling we agree. You just need to style them differently. Don’t embarrass you and or we please, refrain from wearing them as pants. They simply are not PANTS!!! Okay I am ready for you our readers to weigh in on the subject, should there be a size limitation to who should wear tights and or leggings? Do you disagree; you think they are all leggings whether they are made from nylon, spandex or a fabric??? Do you think both should always be worn with a longer tunic style top or dress? Do you like them?? If you do which is your favorite and how do you style them? Do you hate them; have you not embraced this fun trend yet?? If not why not??

"Quality is never casual; it is always the result of a clever effort”.
The ITALIAN FAMILY brand was launched by Gabriele Santoriello who, after honing his skills with various Italian clothing companies, decided to start his own project, Italian Family, with the help and collaboration of his own family, that has gained a thirty-year experience in the field and specializes precisely in the tailoring of classic trousers and men’s suits. Revisiting a classic menswear staple keeping the cut, the rich fabrics and refined details unchanged is the major aspiration of the designer, who blends Made in Italy sartorial tradition with a unique product. The choice of the materials is a key factor that determines the quality and beauty of every Italian Family garment. For this reason, quality standards are extremely high, always ahead of the times and always on the hunt for innovative production techniques.
