Sock it to me! Sock it to me! I’m still trying to figure out who it was who first misinformed men that it is in anyway fashionable to wear shoes without socks while wearing a suit. If you’re wearing casual wear with flipflops, or sandals, that’s one thing, but … Just the other day, I spotted a male celebrity (who dresses these people, anyway?) seemingly, at first glance, to be exceptionally well put together in a well-fitting expensive Canali suit. And his shoes were stylish and pricy Esquivel. However, before heading out and about, he’d obviously not stopped to look in any mirror, nor had some friend tell him, just how disconcerting were the expanses of his bare, hairy, and ghostly white ankles visible in the space between his trouser-leg bottoms and his shoes?! Did he really find socklessness comfortable? Personally, I once experimented to see if comfort was the contributing factor, and I ended up with more blisters and hot spots than when I was breaking in my new hiking boots to climb Mt. Rainier. My resulting talks with feet specialists have always confirmed that not wearing socks with shoes can result in smarmy, sweat-wet, tootsies — especially if the shoes don’t breath — with all sorts of resulting fungal disorders — think athlete’s foot — and just plain stinky feet.

What man can ever think that fungal stinky feet are sexy?

And, please, don’t try and provide me with the argument that you’re actually wearing “half socks” that provide the sockless look but keep your feet from ever getting fungal and/or stinky. Under no circumstances, especially when wearing a suit, do any man’s bare ankles look aesthetically pleasing or fashionably correct, except, possibly, to someone with an ankle fetish.

Those of you who know the Canadian calendar may be familiar with its Victoria Day (on every Monday preceding May 25 by way of celebrating the birthday of Queen Victoria), and you may suspect I’m days premature in writing anything about it now. You’d be right, except, I’m not referring to it, but, rather, to an individual, Victoria Day, U.S. citizen, resident of Post Falls, Idaho, who is the official spokesperson for — ta-dah — the taco. Scroll through Victoria’s facbook page any day, and you’ll likely find one, or more, favorable comments about this folded hand-size corn or wheat tortilla, stuffed with culinary goodies, origin-unknown but likely dating back to a Mexican Olmec diet; Victoria apt to throw one of her renown taco parties on any day, of any year, including on whatever holidays exist on foreign calendars. Recently, I sat down with Victoria at Spokane, Washington, U.S.A.’s Osprey Restaurant when it turned out we were both attending the launch party for the latest issue of Bozzi Media’s Spokane Coeur d’Alene Living magazine. WILLIAM MALTESE: Why the taco? VICTORIA DAY: At a young age, probably about 8 years old, my aunt was babysitting me, and she made the tacos her Sicilian mom had taught her to make. Initially, without my having tasted them, I was uncertain about even giving them a try because they had potato and carrots in them and a strange spice I’d never had before. She also made a cheese sauce for them. Upon eating them, though, I was in Seventh Heaven; those were the best tacos I had ever eaten in my life. It was also my first time trying fried corn tortillas; it made a great combination. I had my aunt show me how to make them, and, then, I became the official taco maker of our family. WILLIAM: Any preferences, as regards shells and fillings? VICTORIA: We all have our likes and dislikes when it comes to those. Tastes vary regionally, locally, and by family tradition. I grew up with my mom making ground beef with tomato paste and spices. Our toppings were ones she liked, such as black olives, tomatoes and cheese, very simple, since she didn’t like anything too hot/ spicy. We always used flour tortillas fried in oil. WILLIAM: About your taco parties which have become quite famous, over the years, as being fun places to be? VICTORIA: When I was in high school, my mom would have taco parties, and I would invite my friends. We kept it simple. I carried on the tradition as I got older and had a place of my own. Whenever I would come home to visit, that was the meal we always had; my mom would say, “I just can’t make them as good as you do, Victoria.” So, I would always be the taco maker. My taco parties have evolved over the years and I have tried different meats and fishes. I always go back to the ones I grew up with, which are the ones my friends seem to love, too. We have had tacos for birthdays, holidays, and, most recently, Thanksgiving. With large gatherings, everyone is in charge of bringing something such as their favorite topping, especially since I don’t use lettuce, onion, or jalapenos. People bring chips and salsa, side dishes such as rice and beans, dessert, or whatever we decide we are drinking. I provide the meat, taco shells, and some toppings. For me, these parties are to bring the people I love together and feed them. We make new friends, laugh, play games, and take home great memories. Clean up is a group effort and it’s done in no time. Our Gentleman of the Flowers by WILLIAM MALTESE

I readily confess to having had my penchant for flowers for a very long time. In the early years of my artistic career, I was primarily known for my Poison Plants Series of mixed media artworks, including the beautiful Stargazer Lily and Autumn Crocus. I still remember the pleasure I took in receiving five-dozen long-stem orange Voodo Hybrid Tea Roses, and how thoroughly wonderful it was to wake up, at least for the time they lasted, to their wondrous beauty and perfumethe-air smells. While I’d always known women enjoyed receiving flowers, and had obliged on various occasions, that was the first time I knew I was, likewise, thoroughly hooked. As far as more long-lasting blooms, because they’re portrayed by paint on canvas, I first become confronted with the floral fields of artist Steven A. Scroggins on a very cold, wet, dreary, gloomy-doomy evening in the eastern Washington State end-of-nowhere spot of Spokane. Since the city wasn’t then, nor is it now, known as any kind of art-destination, I can’t tell you how surprised I was to be presented with artwork that not only made me smile, but, actually, made my outside surrounds far less depressing. As it turns out, Steven isn’t the only international artist, among the handful, who can somehow survive and thrive in the hinterland Spokane area. Actually, he lives in Coeur d’Alene, just across the Idaho border to the east, come there by way of Palm Springs, California, with his charming wife Trudy. My sister and I have floral pieces by Steven in our private collections, and, while Steven would prefer that collectors, like us, would pay much more attention to his artwork, sans flowers, I’m afraid I simply can’t help myself. On many a cold, wet, dreary gloomy-doomy day, I’ve found myself turning to a Steven A. Bridging the Gap

with Brenda Robinson Burgett Bridging the gap between staying positive and falling into negativity can be a humorous venture. It should be if it isn’t. Seriously it can be if you want it to be. How? Thought you’d never ask! What would happen if you attempt to see the doomsday person sharing their opinions/beliefs as talking heads? You know the blah blah heads in the cartoons? Concentrate on the intensity of the eyes, the lines in their forehead and the best part-their mouths. No need to look at body language because their talking heads Remember? That would not be unkind because they can still believe they are converting you or scaring the life you have left, out of you. They probably believe you are interested and won’t notice the distant glazed look on your face and in your eyes. You will give them their time and hopefully you’ll get a smile out of it? I had a lady tell me about her horrific child birthing experience. I was in my ninth month of pregnancy. The baby must have been listening as well it took ten months to convince the child to come on down and out! Bridging that gap of pregnancy and giving birth, was not a happy thing for me or the baby. What was she thinking? Maybe she meant well. It was much too late to change my mind at that time. I would give birth –eventually and it turned out that it wasn’t as bad as the fear that she had planted in my young mind. I learned from that experience and bridge that gap means not sharing anything about labor and delivery with anyone. I have developed a script for those having babies. If they ask, I say, “Don’t ask me I have no comment. You’ll know when you get there. I might even say something like, ask your mother?” Have you ever been around a friend or enemy, who is so positive all of the time that you occasionally fantasized about taping their mouths shut? Of course, you haven’t, but just in case you have or will someday, remember this suggestion to stay away from them. Enjoy your raincloud, until you get bored with it, or run out of someone to listen. Bridging the gap from living mostly happy or not is your choice. Seriously it is. A short attention span can be of great benefit during those times. Lack of an audience is helpful as well. A willing ear is helpful at times, Just a word of caution, watch the listeners eyes and if they are glazed overyou might want to save your breath. Hey, much love to you. Laugh at yourself before anyone else gets the chance? Remember to bridge the gap between living life to its fullest or not. Being happy is a choice, as is seeing the humorous side of life. Happy is a four-letter word with a spare!!! Go forth and annoy people with your happy self.

SUE MAY Interview

by Brenda Robinson Burgett It was a spring morning. I had a list of things so long, that no one human could possibly handle. I was hurrying through our local dollar-etc. store. The bright well-stocked building was packed with bargain hunters. And like myself they mostly seemed in a rush. Everyone seemed to be preoccupied and late for something. There didn’t seem to be time to smell the daisies or enjoy the day. I just needed a few things, but as usual I had an armload. Looking at the checkout lines, I noticed a clerk with the brightest smile that I had seen in a while. Now, that’s the line I want to be in I thought. It was apparent that other shoppers felt the same way. Her checkout line was long but her pleasant smile was worth waiting for, so I waited my tern. It was a small thing at the moment, but I left the store thinking that I needed to interview that happy clerk. I wanted to find out what made her so happy, in a busy store full of shoppers, who weren’t equally so happy? It would be a month later, before we could meet. We chatted like old friends at my kitchen table. The area was set up with the equipment I needed for the interview and I was excited to hear Sue’s story. Q: So, Sue, what makes you so darned happy? Sue, laughed and said. You keep asking me that and I really don’t know except that I choose to see the light side of things.? I don’t have a lot and I don’t need a lot. My dad was my inspiration, he always said, “leave people with a smile.” I don’t always remember. but I try to do that.

Q; Where were you born- raised and launched? Sue: I was born in Wenatchee seventy years ago. It was usual for that time to marry right out of high school, and I was no exception. I married and had two children, which I raised mostly by myself. I was amazed that she was seventy years of age. She looked much younger. I was impressed that she had no resentment for having to work two jobs to meet the needs of her family. Q: What was your childhood like? Sue: My parents were hard working. Dad worked in the fruit. He started picking fruit in California and followed it as the fruit seasons progressed to the apple and soft fruit orchards in Wenatchee, WA. Mom worked and I pretty much raised the kids. Q: Have you always been so happy? Sue: I think so, but of course not always. I try to keep busy. I went through a quilting phase. The kids finally said, no more, they didn’t have any more walls or room for quilts! My passion is flowers and my backyard garden. I’m the happiest when I there. I have a small home and small yard. The backyard has a fountain and lots of flowers. My friends enjoy it with me. Q: If you could have anything you wanted what would it be? Sue: I am pretty content, but maybe have a garden center with flowers and landscaping business. I’m always trying to improve myself. Sue has definite ideas and is her own person. Her politics are her own and she talks with knowledge and passion about her beliefs. She is pleased with the job she did raising her children. She says, that she was the mother, and she did what was expected of her. Sue, has a great sense of humor and this shows in her answer when ask what she liked to read. She said, that she enjoys reading the local newspaper, which includes the obituary section. She laughed saying, that she reads it to make sure she’s not in it! Q: Do you have any advice for the young women of today? Her advice to young women of today, is to take time to know who they are, before they commit to a relationship. She would have them ask themselves what it is that they want out of their lives. She admits to feeling like she should have taken more time Sue believes that she doesn’t stand up for herself enough, and that she hasn’t always had enough self-confidence. She questions that I she had waited to enter a life of marriage and children; she may have developed more confidence. Sue, was proud of the fact that she had helped with the raising of her four sisters, saying that is where she believes she learned to go beyond than just doing her job. Sue, takes pride in being a responsible person and tries to give more then she takes. Sue could retire, but is not anxious to and says that will probably work for awhile longer. I, personally hope so! She is a happy spot in our world. She knows who she is and has a way of making others feel good about being in her shopping line. There is so much more to Sue then we had talked about. My appreciation for having spent time with her was genuine and uplifting. Thank you, to Sue and the people who make our everyday life just a little bit brighter There is a world of stories behind those who choose to work with the public, and Sue’s is an honor to share. Circumstances have brought you here. And they aren’t necessarily the most joyous circumstances. You might be wondering how can someone understand you and possibly help you when doctors haven’t succeeded. It’s time to meet Danijela Strauss. She can offer you more insight and advice than most doctors. Why? Because she has been there. She has lived through the struggle and heartache. She has been told the same or similar things you have probably heard. “It’s too late. You are too old.” But that didn’t stop her and it shouldn’t stop you. Here is her story: “I was supposed to have a baby by now.” As I look back on my struggle to get pregnant, I realize, it is such a distant memory. I am no where similar to the person I was back then. As now, I am a mom. I successfully made the transformation, from A to Z. I was always a “strong” woman. No one could tell me “it couldn’t be done.” I believed, ANYTHING can be done. But, I came from a culture where it was and still is shameful to be childless. My family and friends would feel sorry for me, pulling me into this belief that I was a failure, looking at my own body as if it was broken. I grew up with the mindset that hard work was the answer to everything. I came to find that this was also true in having a baby. I was healthy. I received my monthly period. I did not think anything further in how a baby was created. I figured it would be, and often is, as simple as not using protection. Most couples get pregnant pretty quickly after stopping contraception. It never crossed my mind that my fertility journey, my journey to motherhood, would be so hard. Most couples are holding their baby within the year of starting to try conceiving. I did not envision that I would be submitted through excruciating emotional pain. I married at the age of 36. We started to work towards becoming parents immediately. Every month that passed, our hope diminished. After 6 months, I became anxious because I was not “late.” What if. What if. Soon a year passed. Every month, I sat on the bathroom floor with tears streaming down my face as I cursed my body. We went to see doctors. We did all the tests. We did whatever we had to do. All to achieve: “Unexplained Infertility.” That was my diagnosis? Mine? Infertility was a knife stabbing my heart. What did it mean?

What makes a woman unique is her ability to produce a child. How can one not get pregnant? Everyone tells you: you get married, you have a baby, and life goes on. As I processed my diagnosis, my life swirled around me. Panic encased me. Fear encased me. I started becoming obsessed. I had 3 IUI’s. Nothing. I got on the roller coaster of despair and obsession and kept turning around and around. Up and down. Upside down. In an actual roller coaster, the rider feels the adrenaline and excitement. This was the exact opposite. Those who have gone through this “diagnosis” knows this roller coaster is an ever constant state of anxiety. For me, it was also a state of emergency, which is the worst place I or anyone else can be in when trying to get pregnant. My fear of never becoming a mother and my feeling that I was unworthy crippled me. “I may never have a baby. How will I continue without one?” Was spinning in my head. I envisioned familial and friend gatherings and looking “weird.” The ONE without a child. I did not have the mindset I have today. I wish I did. They suggested IVF. “What is that?” The doctor told us they would take my eggs and explained the remaining details, but it felt like I was looking down upon the situation and someone else was controlling my body. I heard “In Vitro.” I screamed in my head, “I DO NOT NEED THAT!” There was still hope I could get pregnant just the next month. Hope and despair made a vicious cycle. We were informed that I would have a 12% chance of it working for the first time. “Was it worth a try?” We tried. Once. Twice. Three times.

We changed doctors thinking, hoping, anything, that the next one would right my world. Fourth time. The roller coaster kept spinning me around including depression and more despair to the mix. Words from the doctors were my seatmates on the roller coaster. Never being quiet: “Your chances are less than 1%. With your age, it might be time to consider a donor.” Their words crushed me. I turned to research. Studies told me that women who were diagnosed with infertility experienced the same or even greater stress levels than a woman dealing with cancer. Cancer. You can talk about cancer. You know people are actively working to find a cure. You know people understand what is happening. But, infertility? It is not like cancer. People don’t really understand how hard it is and how much pain it causes. This roller coaster ride is very silent and lonely. Now, it felt like I was pushing the roller coaster up the incline. I realized I was grieving. I was grieving for the loss of my potential child, for my soul, for who I was. I suffered from high anxiety and stress. I was triggered by so many unexpected and unpredictable things: a pregnant woman walking down the street, a pregnant nurse who was prepping me for egg retrieval, family members getting pregnant, ANY gatherings involving children or new babies, and the constant question: “What are you guys waiting for? Why are you not pregnant?” I felt unsupported by my husband who would ask me how I felt about these situations. I told him, “Pain.” In return, he said I was being negative and should be happy for them. I was not being cruel. I was not being mean. A childless life was a sinkhole, a black hole. The roller coaster tossed me into a place I couldn’t get out of. It consumed every aspect of my life. It was like infertility was tattooed on my forehead. I eventually had to give up. I needed to heal my mind and body. I needed to relearn that I was worthy no matter what. There was a point, a significance, behind my struggles. I aimed to regain control over my emotions and my mindset. In order to move forward, I had to transform myself. This happened by finally quieting the voices in my head. I worked to accept myself and live in the moment during this period.

I made a few commitments to myself, but this one was what I attribute to my final success at motherhood: I stayed positive. I desperately needed to remain optimistic. Moving away from despair was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. But, it was the best decision I have ever made. Yes, I did “everything right.” I followed all the rules and was one of the 1% of the “lucky” women who ovulate with Lupron, this is related to IVF. However, I truly believe that my mindset and my absolute determination to look at every step of the journey as potential rather than an obstacle change my fate. I became pregnant. There was no doubt to do “just one more.” That was an easy decision. The first clinic I went to called me. My first embryologist, my angel, asked what I wanted to do with the embryos that we left with them frozen. They were our last hope. Every day I pinch myself while looking at my son. I watch him as he plays and he is so perfect, so smart, so beautiful, and so REAL. He is here. He was and is my reason for my determination. What age were you when you started competing? I started competing from the age of 15 years old. My Pageant history has been ongoing for 12 years.. I dreamed of representing my Country as Miss Universe Great Britain. The beautiful women inside and out had a purpose, they were influencing the world with their female empowering causes, they were intelligent and are beautiful. I was inspired from a young age in pageantry and would practice my walk for hours in my bedroom. Furthermore, I firstly represented my London Borough as Miss Camden, and went on to compete for Miss London Borough. I was crowned as Miss Most elegant UK and then the overall title Miss London Borough UK. This title followed on to a international title as Miss UK Eternal international . Secondly, I went on to compete in Miss England semi-finals and made the top 10. Thirdly, I went on to compete in Miss Great Britain semi-finals and won the Miss Great Britain sponsors choice. Fourthly, I competed in the 4th biggest pageant in the world named Miss Earth UK. I represented Miss Earth London UK and went on to win Miss Earth Air 2017. Fifth Pageant, I took the International stage representing Miss UK Worldwide, I won the overall international Miss Worldwide title and I won a side award. Best Eco fashion wear. Sixth pageant I competed in United Kingdom Elite Miss International. I won three titles such as Miss Best Interview United Kingdom Elite 2018, Miss Best in Fashion United Kingdom Elite 2018, and the overall Miss Great Britain Elite 2018. I also have won a charity photo competition and was crowned Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s British Sweetheart. I was meant to compete In Gibraltar in 2018, however the Beauty Pageant unfortunately went into administration. So, had to move on, however, I counted my blessings and never gave up my dreams in continuing to make a difference and pursuing pageantry. Seventh pageant, I represented the title Young European International London. Eighth pageant, I competed was an American pageant named Pure International Pageants, However, to go to internationals, you had to win the National title in your own country in order to compete internationally. So, I entered as a Pure UK finalist. I went on to win the National title as Pure International Miss United Kingdom 2019! I also went on to win the charity crown 'crowned to serve', I competed also in the super championships and side awards. The side awards I won was Best in Interview, Best in evening wear, Best in fashion wear and Best of the best winner Super optional championships. I then won the overall super championships. I Won an international place to compete in United states Orlando Florida. where I placed as International Queen 2nd runner up and Special Recognition award, Miss Congeniality International. I went on to win 8 awards such as Special award Recognition Academic winner, Super star International competition creative writing, Special recognition award charity title, 'crowned to serve', super star international Print model, Super star international Artwork and Super star international Be the impact in community service award. My Ninth pageant I have entered one of the biggest pageants in the world Miss Universe Great Britain. I am presently a Miss Universe Great Britain 2020 Finalist. Competing for the title in July 2020. This is the only Entry route to Miss Universe. I am so honoured, to have been selected as a finalist. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lifelong dream of mine to compete in Miss Universe Great Britain.

Of your titles do you have one that is more special than the others? Every Title I have won and represented have all been equally special in there own unique way. I have been so grateful to be given the chance to make better change with my platform and titles.They have embodied great experiences and amazing opportunities to represent a charity close to your heart such as a sisterhood charity., However, As a current Miss Universe Great Britain 2020 finalist. it has been a long time dream of mine since a child.so I feel very honoured to have been chosen as a finalist. it has been life changing to just be celebrated for being yourself. This has certainly been a very special chapter being a MUGB 2020 finalist. How do you feel about the success that you have? Thank you so much, I am very appreciative to many who have believed in what i do. I always saw not how far I got to go, but how far I already came. I love that I can still achieve my dreams but I don't need fame to make me feel wholesome. When I get sent messages from other girls saying how I inspired their modelling career and competing in pageants. It gives me joy to know that, the love and inspirational messages I give out, is helping someone develop themselves personally and professionally. I am always happy to help those people, because I know what it’s like to go through childhood hardship. I am helping others and making a positive difference in their lives. It is always what I wanted to do to help inspire others, motivate them and help build each other up. In the past, as soon as the crown was placed on my head, it wasn’t about me anymore, it was about the people who needed my help who was counting on me. I felt like I had a responsibility to bring out the best in those women. What was it like doing the Egyptian photoshoot? The most awaited ‘Cleopatra and Nefertiti’ photo shoot was the biggest international project that San Dias has ever done so far. It took the team 8 months to plan, organise and prepare everything for this international project. Being on location was like going back in time in Ancient Egyptian, the sets, the props , the designs the photography and modelling came together from an astounding team. it was shot in a carpet tapestry shop with some of the carpets dating back almost 300 years old. the location was sponsored. just wearing the outfits brought to life ancient Egypt and how they lived, it seemed like an empowering creative project that was a dream to do. How did it feel to play such an amazing person? I loved playing Cleopatra. It was my dream to play her, I put my heart into that shoot and worked very hard with the team to achieve what we all achieved. It took 7 months to bring the project together and an 8 hour day shooting. I made it my own, of course I never be like the real Cleopatra, no where near how regal and incredible she was, I know that, you know that , but I am proud to honour Queen Cleopatra’s legacy as a strong empowered independent women of history . Also it was inspired by the beautiful Elizabeth Taylor as she made a remarkable Cleopatra. This is a beautiful sophisticated and artistic project. A Talented team coming together to create beautiful art in such hard economic times, to bring happiness and imaginative content to people. What an honour to be selected as Queen Cleopatra a strong and empowered women of history! With my sidekick The Beautiful Phillipa as Queen Nefertiti. Someday I like to publish a motivational book of dreams.

What are your goals and dreams? The plans I have for 2020, is to fulfil my lifelong dream that I been working towards for many years. That’s is to give it my all on the Miss Universe Great Britain stage in 2021. I walk for those women who never got a chance to walk, who never had a chance in the education sector, the women who are survivors transforming their pain into power. It’s those women I will remember on the stage.I continue to support and fundraise for the sisterhood charity. Also, my duties in being a charity Chairperson for Ladies of All Nations Organisation. Mentor women survivors under the Loani Global team in partnership with Worlds women conference. I like to continue my charity work also in Indonesia Bali on campaigning on the plastic free movement affecting our ocean wordwide. I would like to Publish my self-help book and inspire women to be the best version of themselves. Lastly, I would like to continue modelling. Where would you like to be in 5 years? Honestly, I feel really fulfilled! I have already achieved this goal by my voice being heard on the plastic free movement. As a woman, to receive an award of recognition my ‘Coat of Arms’ by the Government of Bandung (Bali) and being named in Indonesia as the no plastic princess. Has been so rewarding. Where we have created new wave lengths and a strategy on combating the issues of plastic. For example, advising businesses to make their packaging, straws and water bottles plastic free. Because of our visit, they are using bamboo and got rid of plastic bag use. This has created big improvements on the waste management and saving marine and wildlife. On the other hand, we still have a long way to go with women’s rights in developing countries. I hope I can continue to support women survivors and turning them into leaders on a global scale. Where every girl can feel safe in her own vicinity, a right to an education, a right to have equal rights and choices, to be respected for her skills as women. I wish to become the best person for those women and help them in any way I can. To create positive change to this world and to make a difference, utilising the research skills from my degree, I like to help others as much as I can and make an impact. I also like to continue my modelling career for as long as I can. I hope to inspire other girls to fulfil their dreams and be am inspiration for them. I will dedicate myself to female causes. And let the work speak for itself.
