South Island
The North Island is a fantastic mix of stylish cities, panoramic landscapes and endless beaches. Discover Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city or go north, to Auckland the ‘City of Sails’ with its beautiful harbour.
The South Island boasts possibly the most magnificent scenery found on Earth! National Parks abound with majestic mountain peaks surrounded by icy blue glaciers and separated by ancient fjords that cut deep into the landscape leaving breathtaking waterways abundant with marine life.
Alternatively, experience Maori country and Rotorua’s thermal pools, or take time out and stay at Lake Taupo beneath the soaring volcanic peaks of Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu.
The largest city is Christchurch, known as the lively English-style "garden city" while the rugged West Coast provides a diverse landscape of sea, mountains and activities. For fun and adrenaline, there's nowhere like Queenstown, a ski resort in winter, yet year round its full of action as it’s become the unofficial adventure capital of the world!

For the more active, sail through the spectacular Bay of Islands, swim at a secluded beach or walk in Waitomo’s glow-worms caves.

The Contiki Menu
Tunes while you travel
Great holidays involve entertaining your taste buds along the way. Contiki don’t just dish up a feast of adventure and fun - we make sure you sample all the delights authentic Kiwi cuisine has to offer. So while you’re busy feasting your eyes on the wonders of New Zealand, you can count on us to provide great meal ideas and dining experiences.
We know music is central to most peoples' lives, that's why we've always seen music as an important part of the overall Contiki experience. Our state of the art stereos pump music through our speaker system on board each of our vehicles.
New Zealand is home to loads of delicious dishes from tender lamb to some of the world’s best seafood in particular the famous large green mussels from down south. There’s also the chance to experience a traditional Maori Hangi consisting of food cooked in an underground pit. With New Zealand’s fantastic lush agricultural landscape, there’s something to suit everyone’s taste buds! Every Contiki tour serves up a selection of breakfasts, lunches or dinners. While some meals are included, we have deliberately left other meal tims free so you can sample the local cuisine for yourself. Please Note: If you have any special dietary requests please make these known at the time of booking. Although we’ll bend over backwards to make sure it happens, standards can sometimes vary from place to place. Unfortunately we can’t be held responsible for local meals that don’t meet your exact requirements. It’s all part of the adventure!
In addition, your Contiki crew carries a wealth of music and uses it to enhance your travels and appreciation of New Zealand. They've got theme music that connects you to a city or sight you're visiting, dance music to inspire you on an evening out or the latest tunes to ensure entertaining scenic drives. If you have your own favourites, we encourage you to bring them along as others may want to hear your Top 10!
Charging on the Go! Flat batteries are no longer an excuse for missing out on a great photo, because we’ve fitted the vast majority of our coaches with charging units. And you’ll never have to worry about going cold turkey just because your ipod or mp3 player died minutes after you hit the highway. Just don’t forget to bring your Australasian plug adaptors. Also, if you want to send brag-mail to your friends and family stuck at home, there are plenty of internet cafés that will help you rub it in.

On each itinerary page, you'll find a 'FREE TIME' box with a sample of the Optional Activities offered on tour. So you know about them in advance and to help you budget, a complete list is available on our website - go to www.contiki.com.au/newzealand - click on the tour you're interested in, then click on the 'Optional Excursions' button. Here you'll find descriptions of each Optional Activity, prices and some additional web links.
9
A complete Optional list with pricing will also come with your final documents.
When do I choose and how do I pay? Optionals are arranged and paid for on tour, not beforehand. By leaving the final decisions until then, you'll have the following benefits: • You’ll be able to choose what interests you, at the same time as your new friends. • You'll get great value, as we’ve negotiated the best rates for each Optional. • An experienced Tour Manager who'll offer you personal advice as well as take care of all the arrangements. • Some activities are seasonal whilst others are weather dependent. So deciding on tour, rather than before, makes sense. This will make your holiday hassle free, better value and more enjoyable, ensuring greater fun, bigger laughs and better stories. Payment will be made on tour and can be made by cash, travellers cheques ($NZD) or by credit cards.
IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ Some of these activities involve outdoor adventure and can be physically demanding, so there’s always an element of risk. You should make your own decisions about these activities and only participate in activities that you feel comfortable you can handle. It’s also a good idea to check that your insurance includes your participation in adventure activities.

Travelling with Contiki is an adventure you won’t forget – new places, amazing people and what’s even better is that we can do our bit to protect the planet along the way so that those who follow will also have plenty to enjoy.
What we are doing about climate change Global tourism can place additional pressures on communities around the world. Overcrowding, damage to the environment and loss of cultural heritage are some of the impacts being seen. There are significant challenges but our core belief is that by fostering sustainable tourism and acting now to prevent further climate change we can truly make a difference. We are working with our hotel and excursion partners to reduce our carbon footprint and reduce resource consumption and waste. We are also ensuring that our own offices reduce their carbon footprints through ongoing recycling and energy reduction programs, and adopting new initiatives which help to protect the environment and support the communities in which we operate. Contiki’s modern coaches are one of the most environmentally friendly ways to travel so you can breathe easy that your footprint will be a little lighter too. Contiki’s coaches are among the best in Australia and New Zealand and by continually updating our fleet we ensure that not only do you travel in style but that our engines are fuel efficient & environmentally friendly too. You’ll be happy to know coach travel emits less carbon emissions and other harmful greenhouse gases per passenger than most other forms of transport including cars and trains. Check out the facts….

Our Group of companies are donating US$1 million per year to fund much-needed conservation, community and sustainable tourism projects that will create a better world for future generations to enjoy. To ensure every dollar goes to people and places in need, each project is carefully vetted by the Foundation’s independent board of trustees, with Contiki also donating staff time and additional resources to the Foundation. What you can do There is a lot you can do to make a difference while travelling. Even simple things like respecting the local culture of the countries you’re visiting and making sure to live a little greener, by recycling your rubbish, saving energy by switching off air-conditioning and lights in the hotel rooms you are staying in, and conserving water, means the special places you visit will remain as you experience them. In the fight against climate change, reducing carbon emissions has to be the top priority, but carbon offsetting is another small thing you can do to make a difference. You’ll find links on our website where you can calculate your carbon emissions and pay a small fee that goes towards sustainable energy projects that reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. So visit www.contiki.com.au/sustainabletravel for more tips on what you can do. We hope that while you’re painting the town red, you don’t stop thinking green.
Please either pass this brochure on to someone else when finished, or recycle it.

How much money do I need? We recommend you carry Travellers Cheques in small denominations and a credit/debit card. You’ll need to allow enough money to cover lunches, some dinners, souvenirs, shopping, drinks, optional excursions and activities, entrance fees to some attractions and evening entertainment. Please do not depend solely on a credit/debit card for cash. A full list of optional excursions and activities available along with the approximate costs is available at www.contiki.com. How much luggage can I bring? Luggage is restricted to a maximum suitcase size of 73cm x 50cm x 25cm (29" x 20" x 10") and maximum weight of 20kg (44lbs) plus one small hand/day bag that can go on the coach with you. Your regular luggage will be stored during this time. NO EXTERNAL METAL FRAME BACKPACKS PLEASE, their bulky shape makes coach packing difficult. Contiki reserves the right to refuse to accept larger suitcases on tour. If you have your own ski/boarding equipment, you may bring one pair of boots & skis or snowboard. Otherwise, your Tour Manager can arrange these for you in Queenstown on tour. Baggage is carried at the owner’s risk and baggage insurance is strongly recommended. Remember, if your tour includes a flight you are also subject to airline baggage restrictions.

Remember that early or later in the season you will need warmer clothing as well as a raincoat/anorak. Please note that casinos do not allow jeans or denim clothes. A pair of comfortable walking shoes is essential. For further details, please refer to your ‘Travellers Guide’ information book.
Brochure authenticity We have put a great deal of effort into producing this brochure. The information given and literature produced by Contiki has been compiled with care and is published in good faith. Sometimes, because of circumstances outside our control, we have to alter some excursions due to seasonal closing or repairs to buildings, etc., especially early or late in the season. If this happens, alternative excursions will be arranged.
