“action expresses priorities ” - MAHATMA Gandhi It’s easy to believe in things, but much harder to live them. For over 50 years we’ve had some immutable truths. They’re not just words we say, they’re words we live by: Make every moment count. You only get one shot at life, but if you do it right that’s all you’ll need. We’re about people, not things. It’s people’s individuality, diversity and a little bit of craziness that makes the world go ‘round.
04-05 Live Every Moment_Contents .indd 2
Life’s an adventure. Push yourself - you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve.
Do things with passion. Life isn’t just there to be lived; it’s there to be loved.
Be young, and stay that way no matter what your age. Always see the world through youthful eyes.
Tread lightly, respect our world and its inhabitants. Walk around the world, not over it.
Challenge everything. Disregard what seems impossible. Embrace change.
Be part of the story. Don’t sit on the sidelines - get involved and make your mark.

Melissa, from South Africa My passion for travel and soaking up new cultural experiences led me to Asia after being a Contiki Europe On-site Team Member for 2 years. Being a traveller at heart, I love sharing with you the little perks that Asia has to offer like the local markets, cuisine, history, beaches and, of course, the people. Helping create long lasting memories for you is what I am here to do, and it’s been a dream come true to be able to do that here in Asia.

Exploring new cultures through food is one of the best things about travel, and there’s no better place to spoil the taste buds with exotic local cuisine than Asia. We’ll take you on a journey of spectacular flavours, from fresh Amok curry in Cambodia, to authentic Phat Si-Io in Thailand or zesty G i cu n in Vietnam. It goes without saying that we’ll fast track you to the best on offer in each destination. Travelling the Contiki way is about authentic local cuisine that you won’t find anywhere else. Each region we travel to has its own special delicacies & traditional dishes. We tailor the food to your trip & we’ll take you right to the best on offer. We include breakfast every day & loads of evening meals, but we like to leave some well-placed gaps (like lunches) for a few reasons. Rather than having to time your day of exploring around an included lunch, we believe in maximising your ME Time to let you discover the local flavours on your terms. Plus, it allows us to make the meals we include even better. You’ll have the chance to grab a recommendation from our team or just follow your nose to amazing food market down the road.

Contiki has an insatiable appetite for discovering new things in every nook & cranny of the world. To continue sharing our discoveries with young travellers for decades & centuries to come, we need to respect & protect those places through everything that we do. We’re at the start of a very exciting journey; the journey to becoming a more responsible & sustainable company. We’ve done some great things, but we’re ready & raring to do a whole lot more. We seek inspiration from some incredible humans. From renowned environmental explorers taking on the World, to individuals in our own Contiki Team taking charge with office sustainability; the people who get involved with Contiki Cares inspire & challenge us to be the best we can be.
CÉLINE COUSTEAU Environmental activist, explorer & documentary film maker. She’s also the grand-daughter of legendary oceanographer, Jacques Cousteau & a big source of inspiration for Contiki. We are excited to have partnered with Céline for 3 years now. Her passion & connection with both our travellers, team & the ocean never ceases to amaze us. As a documentary filmmaker & gifted storyteller, Céline has a fantastic ability to connect with people from diverse cultures. It’s through these real life stories that she helps educate & encourage us, our travellers & everyone around her, to become responsible global citizens & to better understand our natural environments. Constantly travelling the globe, Céline has ventured on countless expeditions, from deep explorations into the Peruvian Amazon to recently swimming with sharks & our Contiki travellers on our Earth Month expedition in the Galapagos Islands. She is a super human to say the least.
A chat with CÉ CÉline Contiki: You recently travelled to the Galapagos Islands as part of Contiki’s Earth Month expedition. What was the most meaningful part of the experience for you? Céline: Visiting the Galapagos is itself a huge privilege. However, seeing the travellers get involved with a conservation initiative while enjoying a once in a lifetime journey was the reward for me. Witnessing them give back to the place they were visiting & have fun doing it added a deeper meaning to the journey itself. I imagine it will be something they take home with them as something really special. Contiki: You spent time with our travellers on their Ecuador & Galapagos Island Hopper trip while you were there. After interviewing the travellers, what do you think they took away from the experience? Céline: I loved hearing how many of them never thought they would swim with sharks. They were thrilled they had the experience because it made them realize it’s not what you see on TV; it’s exciting of course & yet, serene. I think they took home a better understanding of these animals & their underwater realm. Plus it was just an amazing place! To read more of the interview with Céline visit contiki.com
R:EVOLVE Contiki’s army of gung-ho eco-warriors. Contiki offices across the globe are developing localised environmental initiatives under the guide of R:evolve leaders – the chosen individuals who’ve proven their care & commitment to sustainability. These R:evolve leaders even had hands on training with the MAR Leaders on their projects & spent a week in Mexico with Céline Cousteau. The projects R:evolve leaders & their teams work on around the globe include: staff volunteer programmes, Oxfam chocolate campaigns, swap stalls, charity bike rides & incentivised staff car-pooling schemes. Our New Zealand team even purchased hybrid cars for their sales teams! It’s one of the many ways we’re empowering our staff to make changes from the ground up.

YOU Over the past 50 years, we’ve been overawed by the conscientious attitude of so many of our travellers. From taking time to clean up a beach in New Zealand, to attending a charitable dinner in Cambodia, we’re constantly inspired by the selfless ways in which people choose to use their time abroad. If you have an idea for us, want to know how you can get involved or just feel like a chat, send an e-mail to contikicares@contiki.com We’d absolutely love to hear from you.

Some of the positive impacts of this include saving more than 54,000* trees per year & reducing landfill waste that produces harmful greenhouse gases. In addition, the paper used is rated “Excellent” by the World Wildlife

GOT A
QUESTION? QUE Answers to frequently asked questions & things you need to know:
What’s included? • Coach, train, boat, ferry transport, internal flights & ‘on tour’ airport transfers listed in the Backstage Pass Includes section on the trip pages. • Accommodation, breakfasts, lunches & dinners listed in the Backstage Pass Includes section on trip pages. • Sightseeing listed in the Backstage Pass Includes section in each trip itinerary. Unless specified, entrance fees to these locations are included. • Experienced Contiki Tour Manager & Local Guides.
What’s not included? • Personal expense money. • Visas, passport fees, personal insurance & medical fees. • Excess baggage fees & tips for porters. • Sightseeing, visits & entrance fees other than those specified on trip pages. • ME Time optional activities such as cooking classes, etc. • Lunches (unless specified under Backstage Pass Includes section) & some dinners. • Anything not specified in the Backstage Pass Includes section.
Included flights Flights as specified on individual trip itineraries are included as part of the price. As detailed within our Booking Conditions (p.35) under ‘General’, we rely on international conventions regarding air travel & other transportation as specified. Through enrolment & payment for your trip you acknowledge & accept such. Individual electronic tickets may not be issued to you prior to travel due to the group nature of the air/flight booking. In such circumstances, you acknowledge that by receipt of any applicable boarding pass &/or by boarding the aircraft you have accepted the airlines terms & conditions of travel, the application of all relevant International Conventions & applicable national & international law governing air transportation.
Group size Contiki’s group size in Asia is a maximum of 30, a group size small enough to have an intimate Asian experience but big enough to have ultimate fun.
Will I get more information? Upon receipt of final payment, your trip documentation will be released 21 days prior to your departure. Make sure you visit contiki.com/guide for our Travellers Guide. It’s packed full of essential info for your holiday. You’ll also receive a comprehensive day-by-day itinerary including full details & costs of all ME Time optional activities available on your trip. Your free Contiki document wallet* & luggage tag will be sent to you with your travel documents. The wallet is a safe place for your tickets & passport. * Contiki reserves the right to substitute an alternative travel accessory for the Contiki document wallet.
Brochure authenticity We have put a great deal of effort into producing this brochure. The information given & literature produced by Contiki has been compiled with care & is published in good faith. Sometimes, because of circumstances outside our control, we have to alter some activities due to seasonal closing or repairs to buildings, etc, especially early or late in the season. If this happens, alternative activities will be arranged.
How much money do I need You will need to ensure you allow enough money to cover optional lunches & dinners, souvenirs, shopping, drinks, optional activities, entrance fees to some attractions & evening entertainment. When travelling with Contiki in Asia, you’ll find that you’ll often be using local currencies, particularly in remote areas. The local currencies encountered on
34-35 Q+A_Cond's.indd 2
tour are the Riel (Cambodia), Kip (Laos), Baht (Thailand), Yuan (China) or Dong (Vietnam). The countries we visit rely largely on cash as opposed to credit cards or travellers cheques. In the larger cities you’ll find that established stores will accept credit cards readily, while local market stalls will operate on a cash only basis – accepting only local currency. Local currency is readily available through cash machines in each country. Obtaining a small amount of local currency before you travel is also a good idea. ATMs that dispense local currency are widely available. However, you can’t depend solely on a credit/debit card for cash as they are not accepted in all areas. We advise you also carry $US cash in small denominations that you can use as an alternate form of payment. Please note that travellers cheques are generally only accepted in big cities at money exchanges or banks to change to local currency.
me time optional activities WHEN DO I CHOOSE? Optionals are arranged & paid for during your trip. By leaving the final decisions until then, you can choose at the same time as your new friends. You’ll get great value as we get you great rates. Some activities are seasonal & weather dependent. Our optional activities offered on Contiki Asia tours are operated by 3rd party operators. While every attempt is made to ensure the safety of all activities, the nature of the region means that public liability protection that is offered in many countries, may not be applicable in many cases. A waiver will need to be signed by all tour participants to ensure that these conditions are understood & accepted. Note: Travel insurance is compulsory for all Contiki Asia tours.
Past traveller 5% discount Eligibility for this discount is based on clients having booked & travelled with Contiki (or one of our Travel Corporation sister brands, visit www.thetravelcorporation.com for details) within 5 years of their last trip. Travellers must have completed a trip before they can redeem the discount on a subsequent trip booking. Only one discount can be redeemed per past traveller annually. A deposit must be received before the discount can be applied to the land component of the booking. It is not available on pre & post-trip accommodation rates & other selected products such as internal flights. The discount applies to brochured land prices only & cannot be combined with any non-brochured special market promotions..
Do I need vaccinations At the time this brochure went to press (October, 2013), the following immunizations are recommended for travellers in Southeast Asia by the CDC (US Centres for Disease Control & Prevention): • Diphtheria & tetanus • Hepatitis A • Hepatitis B • Typhoid • Rabies • Japanese B Encephalitis Malaria & dengue fever are also an issue within this region. You should consult a travel doctor who specialises in travel medicines or your local doctor to advise on what vaccinations and/or preventative medicines would be required. Don’t forget to bring with you any medication that you may require en route such as antihistamines, antibiotics, etc.
Do I need visas? Please read carefully. Depending on your nationality, you may require visas to enter certain countries included in your trip. You are fully responsible for obtaining all necessary visas prior to
the departure of your trip. Contiki is not legally permitted to knowingly allow anybody who does not have a valid visa to join a trip. Visa & other entry & exit conditions (such as currency, arrival/departure taxes, customs & quarantine regulations) change regularly. In Asia, some visas but not all, can be purchased at the border. At www. contiki.com/travel-resources we have put together some information for all of the countries that we visit on our Asia tours. Consult your travel agent or visit www.visadirect.co.nz to determine which visas you require & how to obtain them. Your passport must have at least six months’ validity remaining when you arrive. Local immigration authorities may deny entry & deport people who do not meet this requirement, even if they intend on staying only for a short period. Important to consider: 1. Visas can take up to six weeks & a fee is normally charged. 2. Failure to obtain all necessary visas could cause you to miss part of your trip & will result in you incurring considerable expense & inconvenience. 3. It is better to apply for all visas through your travel agent before you leave home. Be aware that some visas can be purchased & arranged on arrival. 4. It is very important that the entry & exit dates are correct on the visa. Your travel agent will contact Contiki for full details.
How much luggage can I bring? There are some things to consider when packing for a Contiki Asia tour: • Due to the large number of flights on Contiki Asia tours, your luggage needs to meet the weight & restrictions imposed by airlines. These limits are imposed by the airlines, not by Contiki. Contiki is not responsible for any costs incurred by overweight luggage. • You are responsible for carrying your own luggage. At times this will be in hotels without elevators (as is common to the region), or onto various forms of transport, such as trains. • At hotels without elevators, there may be porters to assist with bags, but this is not guaranteed.
On our trips, luggage is restricted to a maximum suitcase size of 73cm x 50cm x 25cm (29” x 20” x 10”) & maximum weight of 20 kg (44lbs) plus one small hand/day bag that can go on the coach with you. Contiki reserves the right to refuse to accept larger & heavier suitcases on tour. Use of a backpack/rucksack is suggested, but not required. Wheeled suitcases can be used on Contiki tours in Asia. The Contiki Tour Manager may suggest you store your main luggage & utilize a smaller bag for overnight rail journeys, overnight Junk Boat or overnight stays at guesthouses. A small daypack/ backpack of approx 26L capacity is suggested.
no compulsory tipping reward only excellence! Every country in the world has different tipping policies & in Asia, within service industries, tipping is common practice. Tipping is totally optional & only given if you feel the service has exceeded your expectations. If you think your Contiki Team have done an exceptional job then you may wish to tip them. This is entirely discretionary – it’s completely up to you. No compulsory tipping – reward only excellence!
Booking Security Contiki has been running tours for young people since 1962 & in all countries where Contiki operates we fully comply with local industry laws. In New Zealand Contiki is an allied member of the Travel Agents Association of New Zealand (TAANZ).
Online check-in It is strongly recommended that you check-in to your trip prior to departure at contiki.com/checkin. Checking in will save you time on your first day of the trip, give you essential information & also ensure that Contiki can contact you in the unlikely event of any changes to your trip due to matters out of our control. For more information on how to get more before & after your trip see p.18.
Gold Seal Protection Coverage for Cancellation: Most tour operators are interested in their passengers only after they reach their destination. With Contiki, however, you get a great deal even before you leave New Zealand. Pre-paid Cancellation Option NZ$99 per person: By paying NZ$99 per person Cancellation Option Fee with your deposit, the full amount of your deposit &/or payment to Contiki Holidays will be refunded should you cancel your tour for any reason prior to departure from New Zealand. This cancellation option covers the Land arrangements made by Contiki Holidays only. On Your Tour: Should you, or your travel companion, leave at any time during the tour for personal sickness reasons or be required to return to New Zealand due to injury, sickness or death, you & your companion will be refunded NZ$40 per person per day for the unused portion of the tour. (Please note that in some cases hotels require a one night cancellation fee). A Doctor’s certificate is required. The Cancellation Option Fee is not refundable for any reason. * Medical certificates as proof of all illness claims must be supplied.
Travel Insurance Cancellation, unexpected medical expenses, injuries, theft, lost luggage or money can significantly disrupt your holiday. It is compulsory that you take out comprehensive travel insurance before you travel. Contiki has the right to refuse passengers without the required insurance cover to join our tours. Your insurance must cover personal injury, death, medical expenses, repatriation expenses and evacuation expenses. We strongly recommend your insurance also covers cancellation, personal liability and loss of personal property. If you intend to participate in adventure sports and activities when travelling then please ensure your policy covers such. Some policies exclude certain adventure activities.
