Ever thought there must be more to life?

Contiki Australia

There is. Think of 2 words:

Australia. Contiki. Australia, because it’s packed full of things to see, do and love. Contiki, because we’re the people to help you see your world. So if you want to meet people your age and on your wavelength to share fantastic times travelling, there’s no better way to go. This could be the beginning of the rest of your life! We’ve been a family owned business since 1962 and have led the way since day one, helping generations of travellers discover the world.

Adventure and passion – that’s the Contiki spirit. It’s what we stand for… and after travelling with us, you just might too!

he best value You know the feeling? When you’ve done something so fun, you just want to do it again? That’s Contiki. And that’s why people come from all over the globe to explore Australia with us.

nly the best bits

ompletely 18-35

No younger. No older. Just everyone in between. Travel with us and you’ll meet people your age and build your global network big time! All with the aim to see, smell, taste and live Australia AND share some incredible times together. Are you ready?

We’ve done some hard bargaining across Australia so you get the best deals. You’ve probably already noticed that what others call ‘extras’ – to us, are all included as part of the package. So you know exactly what you’re getting, so you can plan to a tee (more on page 12). Some of our nice ‘surprises’ include fitting our modern coaches with power charging units & loads of included sightseeing.

Like the idea of travelling with your own personal travel guru? Our crew are trained to help you get the most from your holiday, from visiting the sights, to finding and doing things a little more ‘off the itinerary’. Tap into their local knowledge and get all the help and advice you need. And trust us, they’ve made it through training ‘boot camp’ to get here, so they know their stuff.

o hassle

Truth is, travel can be hard work. Like when it’s late and you’re lugging your backpack in the rain, up a crowded street, in a new city, looking for street signs whilst juggling a map. Not fun. We take all the hard work out of your holiday, so you can get down to clocking up some seriously good times – everything a holiday should be about.

Why Contiki?

want ‘me time’ We hear you. We know you need your own time to check things out, explore the back streets, find a great place for a meal or just enjoy some chill out time. All our trips have flexible free time in every day. There’s also Explore More optional activities (pages 10-11) that let you pick and mix, whether you’re into culture, adventure sports, music or food, the choice is healthy and we’re pretty confident you’ll find something you just can’t say no to.

After 47 years in the business, we have built up quite a reputation. We’re a member of Tour Operator Associations worldwide and we’re recognised globally for our reliability and quality. Sure, the company may’ve grown and evolved, but that essential Contiki spirit is as strong as ever.

ngenious! There’s lots to cover in this fantastic country! So we’ve got smart and created a way of showing you the best of them by making our tours into ‘modules’. This means there’s a load of flexible options to see exactly what you want, in your timeframe. You can choose to cover the entire country with our Aussie Explorer tour or if you’re short on time, choose any number of tour combinations (modules) from 3-25 days.

That’s what you’re after isn’t it? To explore the places you’ve seen in films, read about in books and daydreamed of visiting! We call them Included Highlights and they’re a part of every Contiki itinerary, every day.

Kakadu cruise in Wildlife rine the Ka hty mig The

Best of all, they’re included in the cost of your tour so you can score extra bang for your buck and be sure you will see the things that are key to every destination. Stuff like locally guided tours, some entrance fees, city orientation tours, organised evenings out – they’re just some of what’s included. Follow the footprints for a bit more of what you’ll see…

Value & Deals. Travelling responsibly.

When you hit the road with us, there are two very good reasons to feel great (and probably more)! First one is the feel-good factor of knowing you’re about to begin the trip of a lifetime. Second, you’ll feel even better knowing that travelling by coach emits less carbon emissions and other harmful greenhouse gases per passenger than most other forms of transport including cars, trains and planes! International air travel is key to getting you on the road to your world adventure and most airlines have options for you to carbon offset, if you choose to. Coach is by far the most carbon efficient way to travel around.

Bags packed & ready to go? Or just thinking about it? Wherever you’re at with your travel plans, joining the Contiki community online will help. Here’s where you can connect with lots of travellers your age all with the aim to get out there and live the travel dream!

Contiki’s coach fleet is one of the best around and we’re regularly updating it so that all our engines remain fuel efficient and environmentally friendly. For the full story go to contiki.co.nz/responsibletravel. We’re also founding partners and have helped establish The Leading Travel Companies Conservation Foundation. US$1 million is awarded annually to projects that protect the environment, help underprivileged communities and support sustainable tourism. In 2008, the Foundation helped protect three million hectares of Atlantic Forest in Brazil, supported indigenous sustainable tourism, funded wildlife research centres in Africa and work to preserve important monuments and archaeological sites throughout Europe, like the sinking city of Venice. For more on the Foundation’s work see tltc.com/foundation

What else can you find at contiki.com? • Contiki videos & mini-movie • Cool competitions • The latest deals • More detailed itineraries, prices & Explore More activity options • Plus there’s contikipedia… our very own wiki full of answers to every Contiki question imaginable written by our tour managers and past travellers.

You’ll find advice and comments from past Contiki travellers to answer all those little questions (and the big ones)! And there’s a healthy amount of pre-trip meeting going on too, so you can often find trip mates from your tour before you even leave home. For more got to contiki.com

The Contiki Menu Of all the memories you’ll make on your trip, what you ate will be right up there with the best of them. Australia has amazing foods to excite (and challenge) your tastebuds! From juicy steaks to some of the world’s best seafood unique to Oz like barramundi fish and Moreton Bay bugs. There’s also Aboriginal bush tucker like witchetty grubs, kangaroo and crocodile. Not to mention the whole other dimension of flavours due to the multi-cultural nature of the country. We include lots of fresh and tasty meals on all of our tours, but we leave enough mealtimes free (particularly lunches), as you’ll be out exploring in your free time, discovering and doing your own thing. If you’ve got any special dietary requests, you need to let us know at the time you book your trip. We will try very hard to make sure you’re accommodated, but sometimes things can vary from place to place and we can’t guarantee that you will get meals to your exact requirement.

Charge it on the go You wouldn’t travel anywhere without your music or a camera, right? That’s why most of our coaches are fitted with charging units, so you’ll never have to worry about your iPod, MP3 or camera batteries running out of juice. Just charge up onboard and you’re good to go – how convenient is that? Don't forget to bring your adapter plug.

One of the ‘must do’s’ in Australia is diving the Great Barrier Reef. Exploring this reef is hard to beat, whether you are a beginner or you’ve dived before. It’s the largest on the planet, a natural wonder of the world and a World Heritage site, complete with 400 different types of coral and 1500 species of fish! You can even dive the reef at night for a whole different experience!

Learn to dive

Dive to adventure

5 Days from NZ$925

3 Days from NZ$745

The 5 day PADI ‘Open Water’ dive course is by far the most popular way to do learn to dive. The adventure of learning to dive combined with staying out on the reef for 2 nights onboard a boat is really unique. The course takes you to 9 of the Great Barrier Reef’s best dive sites and features 2 days of classroom and in-pool training, then it’s onto the live aboard boat for the actual reef diving. There’s also plenty of time to snorkel, relax and just enjoy the reef experience. Days 1-2: Cairns The first 2 days of the course are spent at Pro Dive Cairns modern training centre learning the theory and practical skills of scuba diving. Each day finishes around 5.30pm. Days 3-4: Cairns to the dive boat The next 3 days and 2 nights are spent living onboard a premium live aboard dive vessel. You’ll have the opportunity to participate in 9 dives on a variety of our 16 exclusive dive sites on the outer Great Barrier Reef. Your first 4 dives will complete your open water certification and then as a certified diver you are able to take up to 5 more recreational or ‘pleasure’ dives. One of these dives is a guided night dive! These extra dives will be a highlight of your course and a truly memorable experience. Boat (L,D) (B,L,D). Day 5: Dive boat to Cairns Return to Cairns in the late afternoon where there’s the option to join your new diving mates and crew for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant. (B,L).

What’s included • 2 nights accommodation on nights 3 & 4 onboard the boat • Transfers from Cairns accommodation to training centre and boat • 2 breakfasts • 3 lunches & 2 dinners • PADI ‘Open Water’ certificate & manual • Log book • Scuba equipment Daily except Sunday. Tour code CLTD Important Info An Australian Diving medical certificate is needed. It can be arranged at a cost of A$49.50 on Day 1. Some taxes are payable directly to Pro Dive at the end of the course including the Environmental Management charge at a cost of A$45. Course is open age. You’ll need to arrange your own accommodation on nights 1 & 2 of this package – ask your agent or Contiki to help. If you’re staying at an alternative hotel in Cairns to our recommended Cairns Colonial Club, you’ll need to let Pro Dive Cairns know so they can arrange your transfer (prodivecairns.com). Safety dictates that you can’t fly or go to an altitude of 300m or over within 24 hours of your last dive.

This 3 day liveaboard dive and snorkeling adventure will show you the very best of the Outer Great Barrier Reef. It’s also unmatched for value. You’ll participate in up to 11 dives over 16 exclusive dive sites. Day 1: Cairns to the dive boat An early pickup (5.55am) this morning and it’s off to the dive boat and out to The Great Barrier Reef to start the adventure. The sites you’ll visit have been selected for their variety and quality of coral and marine life as well as great visibility. Boat (L,D). Answers to frequently asked questions & things you need to know. What should I pack? Seasonality & Comfortable, casual clothing for day climate? wear and ‘smart/casual’ for dining and

Explore More Optional Activities When do I choose? Optionals are arranged and paid for on tour. By leaving the final decisions until then you can choose at the same time as your new friends, you’ll get great value as we get you great rates and your Tour Manager can offer personal advice. Some activities are seasonal and weather dependent as well. How do I pay? You pay on tour with major credit cards or cash (A$).

What’s included? • Coach, train, air transfers, and ferry transport as specified. • Accommodation, breakfast and evening meals as detailed on page 15 and under ‘What’s included’ on tour pages. • Sightseeing as detailed on pages 8-9 and in the itineraries on tour pages. Unless specified, entrance fees are not included. • Experienced crew as detailed on page 14 and on tour pages.

What’s not included? • Airport and ferry transfers to tour departure point. • Personal expense money. • Visas, personal insurance, medical fees. • Sightseeing, visits and entrance fees other than those specified on tour pages. • Optional excursions and activities such as white water rafting, helicopter flights, bungy jumping, hot air ballooning, etc. • Some meals as specified under “All this included”.

Will I get more information? Upon receipt of final payment, you’ll receive a copy of Contiki’s ‘Travellers Guide’ – an information book about your holiday. You’ll also receive a comprehensive day-by-day itinerary including full details and costs of all optional excursions available on your tour.

Your FREE Contiki document wallet and luggage tag* will be sent to you with your travel documents. The wallet is a safe place for your tickets and passports, something you’ll want to keep and use again. * Contiki reserves the right to substitute an alternative travel accessory for the Contiki document wallet.

How much luggage can I bring? Luggage is restricted to a maximum suitcase size of 73cm x 50cm x 25cm (29" x 20" x 10") and maximum weight of 20 kg (44lbs) plus one small hand/day bag that can go on the coach with you. On tours which include Flotilla Sailing, a small bag suitable for the extremely limited luggage space is required. Your regular luggage will be stored during this time. NO EXTERNAL METAL FRAME BACKPACKS PLEASE, their bulky shape makes coach packing difficult. Contiki reserves the right to refuse to accept larger suitcases on tour. Baggage is carried at the owner’s risk and baggage insurance is strongly recommended. Remember, if your tour includes a flight you are also subject to airline baggage restrictions.

How much money do I need? You should be able to use debit and credit cards for most items. You’ll need to allow enough money to cover lunches, some dinners, souvenirs, shopping, drinks, optional excursions and activities, entrance fees to attractions and evening entertainment. It is advisable to have some A$ with you when you start your tour.

Am I expected to tip on tour? Every country in the world has different tipping policies and in Australia, within service industries, tipping is common practice. Tipping is totally discretionary and only given if you feel the service has met or exceeded your expectations. Your Tour Manager will assist you with any questions about this while you’re on the road. The same idea applies to your Contiki Crew - if you think they have done a good job then they would be grateful for your recognition by way of a tip, however this is not mandatory – it’s completely up to you.

Brochure authenticity We have put a great deal of effort into producing this brochure. The information given and literature produced by Contiki has been compiled with care and is published in good faith. Sometimes, because of circumstances outside our control, we have to alter some excursions due to seasonal closing or repairs to buildings, etc., especially early or late in the season. If this happens, alternatives will be arranged.

Do I need vaccinations? At the time this brochure went to press (February 2009), no vaccinations were necessary. However, it is wise to check up-to-date information with your travel agent prior to departure. Don’t forget to bring with you any medication that you may require en route, such as antihistamines or antibiotics.

Being such a large landmass, Australia is prone to seasonal climate changes. This will mean that at certain times of the year some of our brochured itineraries may need to be slightly changed. For example: Northern Territory itineraries during the wet season (December to April).

Travel insurance Contiki very strongly recommend you take out insurance cover for cancellation, medical expenses, personal accident, personal baggage, money & public liability before you travel. You may not be accepted on a Contiki holiday unless you have arranged satisfactory insurance. You also agree to indemnify us against all third-party claims, actions, damages and remedies against us arising from your participation in the holiday. For insurance details, please speak to your Travel Agent at the time of making your booking.

Security Contiki has been running tours for young people since 1962 and in all countries where Contiki operates we fully comply with local industry laws.
