Nothing compares to that feeling of experiencing something new & amazing for yourself. The colors of Carnival, the lush Amazon rainforest, walking the same paths as the ancient Incas, the outstretched arms of ‘Cristo Redentor’ & seeing Sugarloaf Mountain rising from the sea. South America’s diversity makes it so special. It’s colorful characters, the rich traditions, the incredible landscapes & the unique ancient cultures that still thrive today.

Discover\ South America\ South America. Contiki. And you. Discover more. Because we’ve been around since 1962, our years of experience in showing travelers the world means we’ve perfected the art of travel for 18-35s.
Choose your adventure. The rich culture & color of Peru, the buzz of Argentina & the action & beaches of Brazil. No matter what kind of trip you’re after, how much time you have, what you want to see (or if you want to see it all) there’s a South American adventure that’s right for you. With 6 trips from 8 – 24 days across Peru, Argentina & Brazil, there’s guaranteed to be a trip to suit.
It’s about you. From your Tour Manager & Local Guide, to our customer service teams, everyone at Contiki has one single focus – to make your vacation the trip of the lifetime. We take the hassle out of traveling, so there’s more time to create your own adventure & discover more in the places that count. Going solo or first big trip? No worries. You’re guaranteed to link up with other young, adventurous & like-minded travel friends (18-35s is all we do). And we don’t charge supplements if you’re traveling solo either, we’ll match you up with a same-sex room-mate, or you can opt for the privacy of your own room for a little extra.
Do more for less. There’s so much to see in South America, so we make sure you see the best bits, for no extra cost. There’s no required local payments. There’s more authentic local meals, so you can really taste the flavors of South America. We include more sights, like a cruise to the islands & beaches of Buzios, getting up close to (the most famous symbol of the Incan Empire), Machu Picchu, visiting the colorful markets of Cusco & staring out over Rio from Sugarloaf Mountain (plus many more). With Contiki you’re guaranteed to get more included in your trip. We also save you time & money. Time, because we take the hassle out of travel (like including flights to get you there faster). And money because we also offer some seriously great discounts, like early booking, booking with friends, or past traveler deals (see p.14 for more).

Your trip, your way. We all travel for different reasons. Want an indepth cultural experience, but want time to relax & take it easy? Or want to get the adrenaline pumping? You can do it all. We make sure there’s plenty of free time to create your own adventure, so you can do what you want. Use it to relax, check out a “football” game, or get up to some more adventurous stuff like hiking or speed boating in Iguassu. We’ve put together an inspirational range of Explore More things to do, to help you get more out of your trip. You can do as few or as many as you like. See p.12-13 for more.
Live it local. When you travel, you want to get the real, local experience. Eating where the locals eat, dancing the Tango or Samba, or exploring the back streets of Buenos Aires by bike. We’ll help you scratch beneath the surface of the countries you visit. Our team live in South America, so they’re perfect for giving you access to real, local experiences. The insider knowledge of our expert Local Guides complements our Tour Managers perfectly with their in-depth knowledge of our amazing destinations. More on p.10.
Fantastic overnights. Our accommodation in South America really sets us apart. You’ll sleep easy in clean, comfy twin-share hotels (or single rooms for a little extra), with each spot being specially chosen based on its charm, location & facilities. There’s no pitching tents, rolling out mattresses, or bunking with groups of other people – it’s all about comfort so you can really relax. We also give you some extra special experiences, like our jungle lodge in the Amazon where you’ll sleep amongst the luscious rainforest. See p.8 for more.
Small groups. On our tours, the maximum group size is around 30 people, so it’s the perfect size for discovering South America. There’s plenty of new friends to be made, but not too many, so it’s great for easily getting around the places we visit.

Amazon Rainforest Special Stay
Our accommodation means you’ll sleep in comfort. It’s what makes us unique. Rooms are twin-share & well located hotels are key, so you’re amongst the action in the places that count. Like in Rio & Buzios in Brazil, we’re close to the beach & in Arequipa & Cusco in Peru we’re next to the city’s main square. They have great facilities too, like pools & bars, so you can indulge in a Pisco Sour or Caipirinha – it’s about comfort, the best facilities & getting a great nights sleep. We also like to keep it local with some authentic experiences like our Amazon Rainforest Special Stay to give you a taste of something different.
Going solo? We don’t charge single supplements for solo travelers. We’ll match you with a same-sex room-mate, or if you want, you can always opt for the privacy of your own room for a little extra – it’s up to you.

Our accommodations are unique, cute & reflect the surroundings that you’re visiting, like a colonial era hotel in Cusco. It’s all about great overnights that are characteristic of the places we visit.
Amazon Special Stay Nestled in the jungle & built from cane, natural woods & clay, our rainforest eco-lodge Special Stay is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. Each room features an en-suite & open-walls, leaving you sleeping virtually amongst the luscious rainforest. With the soft glow of candles & lanterns, it’s a great place to relax & chill. Note: The accommodation mentioned is by no means a definitive list of all our accommodation, which can vary on occasions. Some South American hotels can be smaller & less equipped in comparison to some other Western countries & the standard, style & location of hotel can vary from region to region. Check your Contiki Travel Documents for accommodation confirmation.

One of the best things about South America is food. The different flavors, tastes, aromas & regional specialities are what make each place so unique. To make sure you get a taste of it all, we include lots of meals in your tour price, like breakfast every day & about half your evening meals. But we don’t include every meal (especially lunches) so you can go exploring & go local, whilst having the independence to do what you want, in your budget. We’ve included some extra special meals in our prices, like a Tango show, complete with drinks & a Brazilian BBQ dinner– where you’ll indulge in succulent beef & chicken roasted over an open fire.
Taste South America Succulent Argentinean steak, sizzling Brazilian BBQ’s & delicious fresh Peruvian ceviche... Experience the unique flavors of South America...
There’s some other great meals at local spots in the tour prices too, so you can really get a taste for the places you visit. Think mouthwatering Argentinean steak in Buenos Aires, delicious local fish in Puno & feijoada washed down with an ice-cold Caipirinha in Rio. No matter what your tastes, you’ll love what we serve up. If you’ve got any special dietary requirements or restrictions just tell your Tour Manager at the start of your tour.

Our Team\ What’s better than an amazing vacation in South America? Having the best people taking you on the adventure of a life time. Our team knows the places we visit like the back of their hands. They’re great for local knowledge and even know the locals themselves! Meet Brent, our man in South America. “Even after nearly 10 years of living in South America, I still wander the streets & imagine the different feeling of the eras gone by. South America is my passion. What’s the best thing for me? Presenting a new culture in a fantastic place – something new that people can really be a part of. It’s about the people. They’re amazingly welcoming & want you to be involved. They want you to see the best side of their countries & cultures. As a traveler I yearn to really experience the places I visit, so I know what you’re after. Traveling means something different to everyone, but culture, free time & fun, are all integral parts of anyones journey. Bringing the best of South America to life is what I strive for. Respect for the people, the places & differences in the destinations we visit, is hugely important to me. We’re all about supporting the locals, giving back to the communities we visit, whilst giving you access to the most authentic experiences possible.”
G
We keep it local too – with our English-speaking Guides, & local suppliers on hand to give that essential local knowledge that you’d expect. They know how to bring South America to life for you through history, knowledge & expertise on the places that count.
Getting around\
Say goodbye to 18 hour bus journeys to get you from A to B. On our trips, we include flights between some destinations – it’s a great way of getting around. By including flights, we get you there faster, so you’ll see & experience more of South America’s hotspots. We mix it up on our trips - think private buses (so you’re not crammed in with other travelers), vans & boat rides with friends! A trip to South America wouldn’t be complete without including some fun, local ways to get around too, like triciclos, canoes & cable cars! It’s about comfort, but giving you a taste of how the locals do it. It’s all part of the adventure.

The Inca Trail Trek Walk in the footsteps of the Incas as you hike to one of the 7 new wonders of the world, Machu Picchu – the Lost City of the Incas. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is Peru’s most famous site, with thousands of travelers wanting to experience the magic of this ancient place for themselves each year.
Trekking with Contiki
The important stuff
We’ll take the train to “Kilometre 104” your starting point for Machu Picchu, where we’ll begin your trek with our local professional guide. You’ll experience amazing views of the Andes as you head through the cloudforest & discover wildlife & waterfalls along the way. As you walk along the original stonewalk path, through the Sun Gate you’ll catch your first glimpse of majestic Machu Picchu. There’s time to explore when you reach the site, before heading back to Machu Picchu Pueblo for the night.
• Book early! To help preserve Machu Picchu for future generations, the Peruvian Government closely controls the number of travelers on the trail, with only 500 pre-purchased permits available each day.
For tours that can do the hike see pages 16-17, 18-19, 22-23 & 24-25.
Essential booking requirements When you book your tour (as early in advance as possible) please let us know the following details:
• Inca Trail permits are non-refundable & non-changeable so it’s essential that you let us know your correct passport details at the time of booking so we can process your application quickly. Contiki will process your application on your behalf. To ensure you get your chance to hike the trail, book your spot early. It’s advisable to book at least 3 months before traveling in the low season (between October & April) & 6 months before traveling in the high season (May to September), although it is at times possible to get permits within these timescales. We will process your application within 3 days of booking; we cannot guarantee permit availability.
• Your full name (as appears on passport), your date of birth & gender • Your passport number & date of expiry • Your nationality
contiki.com/incatrail
12-13 Explore More_Inca_USD.indd 3
It’s also important that the passport information that you submit with your application is exactly the same as what you will be traveling with in South America. It’s best to play it safe - if your information changes it can result in a fine, or cancellation of admission to the trail. No refunds will be given.

Contiki Loves Our Foundation.
Recycling.
We’re founding partners of non-profit The Travel Corporation Conservation Foundation. Our foundation has committed more than US$2 million to help underprivileged communities & support sustainable tourism around the world.
We’re committed to using 100% recycled, chlorine free, FSC & PEFC paper for our brochure pages, 95% of which is post consumer waste (that’s litter to you & me). Using recycled paper means we’re using less trees, sending less waste to landfills & consuming 1/5th of the energy refining the fiber to make the paper. Between Contiki & our Travel Corporation sister companies, we’re saving over 70,609 trees* a year.
From sponsoring the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards encouraging tourism operators to develop & share sustainable tourism practices globally, to our own special causes such as ocean conservation. Keep reading…

Helping to protect our oceans.
Loving it local.
Covering 71% of the globe, but with less than 1% under legal protected status, oceans are not immune to human influence. Right now, precious marine ecosystems are being harmed or destroyed completely.
We’re proud to support local businesses on our trips, whether it be via the activities we do, the places we eat or the accommodation in which we sleep.
Contiki actively supports 2 projects involved in the critical task of marine protection, including backing young environmentalists in their hands-on work protecting the world’s second largest barrier reef via the Mesoamerican Reef Leadership program. And supporting Oceana’s valuable research work in the Mediterranean. Learn more at contiki.com/responsibletravel

In South America, almost every one of the places we stay are locally owned, so profits feed directly back to the local communities. Where other travel operators may own their own vehicles & run their own show independent of locals, wherever possible, Contiki work only with local suppliers & businesses.
What about you? Taking care of the environment shouldn’t stop when you travel. Simple stuff like re-using your drink bottle, choosing products with less packaging, recycling on the go or simply turning off the lights when you leave your hotel room are all ways to lessen your environmental impact.

Group size Contiki’s group size in South America averages around 30, a group size small enough to have an intimate South American experience but big enough to make the group dynamic rock.
How much luggage can I bring? Baggage is restricted to only one reasonably sized backpack/suitcase & one carry-on bag & luggage policies are strictly enforced. There are some things to consider when packing for a Contiki South America Tour, including leaving space for on trip purchases: • Due to the large number of flights on Contiki South America tours, your luggage needs to meet the weight & restrictions imposed by airlines. These limits are imposed by the airlines, not by Contiki. Contiki is not responsible for any costs incurred by overweight luggage. Please refer to contiki.com/luggage for more info. • You are responsible for carrying your own luggage. At times this will be in hotels without elevators (as is common in the region) or on various forms of transport.
brands, visit www.thetravelcorporation.com for details) within 5 years of their last tour. Clients must have completed a tour before they can redeem the discount on a subsequent tour booking. Only one discount can be redeemed per past traveler annually. A deposit must be received before the discount can be applied to the booking. It is not available on pre & post tour accommodation rates & other selected products. The discount applies to brochured prices only & cannot be combined with any non-brochured special market promotions.
How much money do I need? You will need to ensure you allow enough money to cover optional lunches & dinners, souvenirs, shopping, drinks, Explore More optional activities, entrance fees to some attractions & evening entertainment. When traveling within South America, you’ll find that you’ll often be using local currency, particularly in remote areas. The local currencies are the Nuevo Sol (Peru), Peso “Argentino” (Argentina), Real (Brazil). The countries we visit rely largely on cash as opposed to credit cards or travelers cheques. In the larger cities you’ll find that established stores will accept credit cards readily, with VISA as the most readily accepted & normally charging a surcharge. Local market stalls will operate on a cash only basis. Local currency is available through cash (ATM) machines however you shouldn’t depend solely on a credit/debit card for cash as they are not accepted in all areas & ATM maintenance is often neglected. ATM’s are available in Lima, Buenos Aires & Cusco airports. We advise you carry cash in small denominations of both $US & local currency. Please note that travelers cheques are generally only accepted in big cities at money exchanges or banks.
Explore More Optional Activities Contiki’s Explore More optional activities are all operated by independent third party operators and it is at the clients own risk to participate in such activities whilst on tour. It’s important that you check your insurance includes your participation in adventure activities & be aware that some of our optionals can be physically demanding & therefore involve some risk.
Acceptance of risk It’s important that you acknowledge that at times traveling on a Contiki South America tour may be more adventurous and presents greater challenges than your normal daily life. The civil infrastructure, medical facilities, transportation, telecommunications & accommodation standards may not be what you are used to, and cleanliness and hygiene standards also vary. As such there is some degree of personal risk inherent in traveling South America and as a Contiki traveler you accept this.
• At hotels without elevators there may be porters but this is not guaranteed.

Depending on your nationality, you may require visas to enter certain countries included in your tour. You are fully responsible for obtaining all necessary visas prior to the departure of your tour. Contiki is not legally permitted to knowingly allow anybody who does not have a valid visa to join a tour. Visa & other entry & exit conditions (such as currency, arrival/departure taxes, customs & quarantine regulations) change regularly. Visit contiki.com/visas for more information. Local immigration authorities may deny entry & deport people who do not meet this requirement, even if they intend on staying only for a short period. Important to consider: 1. Visas can take up to six weeks & a fee is normally charged. 2. Failure to obtain all necessary visas could cause you to miss part of your tour & will result in you incurring considerable expense & inconvenience. 3. Your travel agent will contact Contiki for full details.

Am I expected to tip on tour? Every country in the world has different tipping policies & in South America within service industries, tipping is common practice. Although it may not be customary to you, it is of considerable significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels. Tipping is optional & only given if you feel the service has exceeded your expectations. Your Tour Manager will assist you with any questions about this. Tips for Local Guides & Drivers are included in the cost of the tour. Be aware that services & standards in South America may not be equivalent to those you find at home. If you think your Contiki team have done an exceptional job than you may wish to tip them. This is entirely discretionary – it’s completely up to you.
Will I get more information? Upon receipt of final payment, your documentation will be released 21 days prior to your departure. Log onto contiki.com/satg for our comprehensive “Travelers Guide” filled with all the info you need about South America & your tour. You’ll also receive a comprehensive day-by-day itinerary including full details & costs of all optional activities available on your tour. VACATION DETAILS AND CONDITIONS 4.1 The information in our brochure is correct to the best of our knowledge at the time of going to print (April 2011) but we cannot guarantee that any item or amenity mentioned will be available, especially where we have no direct control over it. 4.2 With respect to their touring program Contiki will do their best, at their discretion, to select accommodation, sightseeing tours and transportation to give you good value for your money. 4.3 Contiki constantly strives to improve tour itineraries and features. If such improvements can be made, or unforeseen circumstances beyond our control make changes necessary, we reserve the right to vary itineraries and to substitute hotels. Contiki cannot guarantee special meal requests nor will assume any responsibility or liability if clients special meal requests are not fulfilled. 5. LIABILITY 5.1 Contiki is responsible for properly arranging and conducting your vacation. 5.2 As a Tour Operator, Contiki makes arrangements with carriers, hoteliers and other independent suppliers to provide you with some or all of the travel services you purchase. These parties are independent suppliers over whom Contiki has no direct control. Unless caused by its own negligence, Contiki is not responsible for and accepts no liability in respect of any claims, losses, damages, costs or expenses arising out of: a) personal injury, sickness, disease, accident or death, however caused, including without limitation, where same results from your conduct on vacation. b) loss or damage to or delay of baggage or other property unless resulting from Contiki’s negligence in which case Contiki’s liability shall be limited to the actual loss but in no event would exceed the total vacation cost; c) delays and loss as a result of government action, weather, mechanical breakdown, equipment failure, labor disputes, sickness, acts of war, insurrection, terrorism, Acts of God or any other causes beyond Contiki’s direct control. Contiki cannot be responsible for interruption of air carrier service due to airline default. d) acts or omissions, whether negligent or otherwise, of suppliers of services or their personnel (including, without limitation, transportation and accommodation services) or of any other person or body unless such a person or body is employed by us, or is an agent of ours, and is acting within the scope of his or her authority. In no event is Contiki liable for the acts or omissions of independent third party contractors or of its own employees or agents acting outside the scope of their duties. e) loss of enjoyment, upset, disappointment, distress or frustration, whether physical or mental, resulting from any of the following: (i) any matter or topic described in sub-paragraphs (a) to (d) inclusive above. (ii) your failure to obtain the necessary documentation to travel. (iii) your failure to arrive on time for initial departure or for connections within the tour or to stay within or join your tour at any time after initial departure. (iv) your leaving the tour prior to its completion. (v) the need for Contiki to change itineraries or substitute accommodation or services, provided that Contiki makes every effort to supply the most comparable services and accommodations available. (vi) cancellation of the vacation by Contiki provided that a full refund of all monies paid is made to you. (vii) Many of our activities are action and adventure orientated. Sports and similar activities inherently involve risks of injury greater than those that would be encountered if you were not participating in such, and therefore, by voluntarily taking part in any sports or other such activities, you thereby acknowledge and assume any of the risks inherent therein. In the absence of negligence on our part, or on the part of our agents and representatives, neither
26-27 Q+A & Booking_USD.indd 3
we nor they accept any responsibility for, and shall not be liable for, any injury, illness, damage, loss, accident, expense, delay or any other irregularity resulting from your participation in any of the activities made available to you. (viii) We take every reasonable precaution possible to assure your comfort, safety, and enjoyment while you are taking part in a Contiki vacation. Contiki vacations are generally for the young, and not for the frail or those not generally enjoying good health. A change of climate, food, time and varied cultural habits often affects travelers differently. We therefore recommend that you advise your doctor that you are taking one of our vacations and ask if he or she recommends anything for your trip, even for something as seemingly benign as an upset stomach. Since the brands of any medication to which you are accustomed may be unavailable in places to which you are traveling, we recommend you bring your own supply of any medication you will require and carry such medication in your hand luggage. Prescription drugs should be carried in the original labeled bottles. Should you fall ill during your Contiki vacation, we will make every reasonable effort to make prompt, sanitary, safe and proper medical care available to you. However, if at anytime or anywhere treatments of any sort are suggested to you that do not meet your needs or expectations, you should not hesitate to contact your own doctor. Also, please note that the same sorts of activities that can expose you to certain types of diseases at home can just as easily expose you to those same diseases abroad. This information is provided only for your convenience and we are not responsible or liable for any damages resulting from your failure to confirm or ascertain health information or medical precaution, if any, for the places which you will be visiting. (ix) Contiki is responsible for taking care to arrange and conduct your vacation properly. With you in mind, we have accepted applications from and interviewed numerous potential employees, and then we select only those people whom we believe in our best judgement would be responsible and congenial, Tour Managers, Representatives and Drivers. Although we firmly believe, based on personal interviews and certain disclosures made to us by our employees, that all of our employees enjoy excellent health, we, like other tour operators, are legally unable to confirm this in most, if not all, instances. YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES 1. BOOKING YOUR VACATION 1.1 In order to reserve your vacation, a deposit of US$200, per person per tour, or the full amount payable if booking is made within 45 days of departure, must be submitted to Contiki by you in respect of that vacation. This payment is in addition to any deposit required by your travel agent. The deposit is accepted as a first installment of the vacation price by Contiki only once the booking has been confirmed in writing by Contiki or your travel agent. 1.2 Your land reservation will be confirmed on receipt of a non- transferable, non-refundable deposit of US$200 per person for the first tour booked and then a deposit of US$200 for second and subsequent tours booked which must be paid within 3 days of booking or the reservation will automatically be cancelled. 2. IF YOU CHANGE YOUR BOOKING 4.1 If after your booking has been confirmed, you wish to change to an alternative departure date or you wish to change to a different Contiki vacation, you may do so subject to availability and provided the new vacation date is also in this brochure. 4.2 A fee of US$30 per person will be charged for any revision or alteration made to a reservation after the booking is confirmed. Any alterations, risk the loss of air space or increased airfares. Name changes or corrections will be treated as a cancellation of air and all normal air cancellation fees will apply. During the tour, Contiki may make arrangements with carriers, hotels and other independent suppliers to provide travel services.
