Europe. Winter. See Europe. The French Riviera. St Peter’s Basilica. The Brandenburg Gate. Christmas Markets. Ski in Austria. Share Europe. Meet 18-35 year olds from all over the world. Make friends for a month, and know them forever. Love Europe. We’re a family-owned business and we’ve been travelling the world since 1962. We’ll never stop. It’s always different. It’s always fun. It’s always an adventure. That’s the Contiki spirit.

Meet
Contiki
Here’s why people come from all over the world to see Europe with us. Only for 18-35s. No younger, no older. Meet people your age. Make friends from all over the world, who love travelling and want to have a good time.
Lots of holiday. Less hassle. Lugging a heavy backpack in the rain? Getting lost? Hanging around, wasting time? Not with Contiki. We do the hard work for you. So you can get on with having a good time. You can also use the Contiki Basement as your London HQ. Store luggage there. Meet people. And get useful info about London, like tips on the cheapest price for shows, how to get around on the Underground and the best place to exchange money.
The best bits. And more of them. The best time of day to see the Mona Lisa in Paris? We’ll tell you. The tastiest paella in Barcelona? We’ll show you. The most far reaching views in the Swiss Alps? We’ll take you there. Where to go. What to see. How to get there. Our crew don’t learn from a guidebook. They’re put through their paces on an intensive training trip of Europe. So they’ve studied hard, made the grade and they’re ready to help.

More extras. For less. Your Contiki tour gets you lots of extras, for no extra cash. A private motorboat in Venice. A night tour of Paris with champagne. A guided tour of the Acropolis in Athens. All included (plus more). You’ll know exactly what you get for your money, so you can plan your trip (and your budget) before you go. More on pages 6 & 9. Then there are the extras you can’t buy. Like charging your phone and gadgets as you travel. There’s more unique Contiki extras on page 10.
Still exploring. 48 years on.
Free time. Your time.
In 1962 New Zealander John Anderson went to London. He had an idea. He hired a minibus. He filled it with young people who wanted to travel. They toured Europe together. And Contiki was born.
All our tours have free time, every day. So you’ll get plenty of time to do your own thing. Explore the backstreets, find a great place for a bite, or just sit back and chill. It’s your free time, and it’s completely flexible.
48 years later, the Contiki spirit is stronger than ever. We travel to even more places in Europe - and beyond. We have more fun. We meet more people. And we’re trusted by travellers all over the world.
There’s even more things you can do with our Explore More optional activities (page 7). Whatever you’re into - art, adventure sports, music or food - we’ll sort it out and we’ve negotiated great prices for you.
Know. Then go. Check contiki.com to see our latest tours, and Definite Departure dates (our most popular tours that are guaranteed to go). We travel to over 40 countries throughout the world, across 5 continents.

ON THE ROA D
your crew. who’s who? Your Contiki Crew don’t just organise your trip, they’re part of it. They’re young, friendly & they’ve done their homework on where you’re going to help you find what you’re after. The result? You’ll have more time to enjoy each place.
“Hi I’m Mark, your Tour Manager” Not everyone’s cut out to join Contiki’s Crew. We need to make it through some pretty intensive training. We’re tested on the road, so we go where you go and see what you see – and know everything about it.”
Here’s why we make the difference... Troubleshooting
Always looking for ways to “ make your trip hassle-free.”
Passionate
I live, eat and breathe “ travel. It runs through my veins.”
Professional
I look after every detail, “ so it all runs smoothly. You just enjoy your holiday.”
Tour Manager Think of your Tour Manager as your walking, talking guidebook. They’re there to help you make the most of each day. That’s because they know their stuff – facts on where you’re going, the best things to see & ideas for your free time.
Tour Driver Handling jam-packed city streets & fast-moving freeways, our drivers know their way around. Best of all, they’ll drop you at your door, so you won’t have to lug your bags around. Sit back until your next stop.
Better trained
Contiki’s training is the “ toughest in the industry. (If we don’t pass, we don’t travel)”
Knowledgable
“I’m here to help you make the most of your trip. Want to know why the tower leans? Or how much the Metro costs? I’ve got the answers.”
Talk the talk
Kann ich die Rechnung bitte? “ I’ll give you a few words and phrases to try out with the locals.”
Friendly
I’m about the same age as “ you, so I’ve got a pretty good idea of what you’re after. And I want everyone to have a great trip.”
From all over Tour “ over meet from
Managers come from all the globe, so you’ll a cool mix of people many cultures.”

TRANSPORT— Getting there. Modern coaches
Chat, sit back with your iPod, or listen to your Tour Manager tell you about where you’re going, as your driver takes you there. Our air-con coaches are the best in Europe & we update our fleet regularly to make sure they’re environmentally friendly. Then there are the Contiki extras, like reclining seats & power points for ‘charging on the go’. Just don’t forget your adaptor.
Part of a team
FRESH FOOD— EVERYDAY.
Flexible
All our tours include breakfast & lots of evening meals. We don’t include every meal, especially lunches, for a reason. We give you the flexibility to explore in your free time, meet some locals & try all kinds of foods, unique to the places you visit - like a Swiss cheese fondue or French Croque Monsieur.
I’m just one part of a “ bigger Contiki crew, all working together to make sure you have the trip of a lifetime.” Sure, we’ve got an “ itinerary, but I keep things flexible when I can. I’ll move stuff around to suit the group and the day.”

Hopfgarten Village
What makes us different? Where you’re headed Hopfgarten village, in the Austrian Tyrol, is the perfect location for a ski holiday. At the gateway to Europe’s top ski resort, Ski Welt, it’s an ideal spot to indulge in loads of on & off piste action. This tiny village is packed with restaurants & lively bars so you really get to know the locals, whilst having a great time with fellow snow hunters. It’s also close to the world famous Austrian towns Innsbruck, Kitzbuhel & Salzburg, so they’re easy to check out too.
Ski Welt region Ski Welt is perfect for serious skiers (or boarders) & learners alike. The area boasts over 250km (155 miles) of pistes, with gondolas & chair lifts. Boasting near perfect terrain & with one of the biggest artificial snow making machines in Europe (just in case!), great conditions are guaranteed.
Getting there – 2 ways to go: Choose to travel on the coach from London, or meet us there. If you prefer to fly, we offer free transfers from Innsbruck airport & Wörgl train station (easy links to Munich & Salzburg airports). To help co-ordinate your flights with our transfers & for info on pick up times from Innsbruck & Wörgl visit contiki.com/ski.

Hitting the slopes
Where you stay & what’s included Our own Gasthof Schoneck chalet with its buzz of activity & welcoming vibe features single, twin, triple & quad share rooms (most with private facilities), plus internet facilities & WiFi. It’s a great place to come home to. Hang up your boots & chill in the bar, or join one of our famous party nights. You’ll start the day off right with an included hot buffet breakfast for a small pre-booked supplement. We’ll also include five 3 course dinners (or 10 for a 2-week holiday), all prepared onsite by our resident cook.
The Contiki team The knowledge & expertise of our team is what makes the real difference. They all live in Hopfgarten, so they know all about what’s hot to do both on & off the slopes. They’re young, friendly & they are there to make sure you have a fantastic holiday.
More than just a mountain There’s much more to a skiing/boarding holiday than just heading up the mountain, so why not spend your free time checking out some of what else is on offer. From whizzing down the mountain on a toboggan, tandem paragliding, ice skating or a horse drawn sleigh ride, there’s plenty of action off the slopes too.

Après ski
Only with Contiki exclusive inclusions Personal Ski Guide: Get to know the mountain right from the start on our free guided piste tours. Our Local Ski Guide runs 2 free mountain tours per week, once at the start to show you the ropes, then later on to help uncover some hidden spots. Relax & explore this stunning World Heritage Listed Old Town, overlooked by Hohensalzburg Castle. Sit at a café, get your shopping fix at the city’s many great stores or check out the birth-place of Mozart – there’s loads to explore. The Contiki Grand Slam: If you’re feeling up for it, have a laugh with your ski buddies & show off your skills with our downhill ski race.
Après ski European après ski is an essential part of any holiday, it’s as important as the mountain itself! Literally meaning ‘after ski’, from drinking, dancing & socialising in Hopfgarten’s bars, late night clubs to traditional outdoor schnaps stands, it’s a perfect way to finish up your days.

Will I get more information? Upon receipt of final payment, you’ll receive a copy of Contiki’s ‘Travellers Guide’ – an information book about your holiday. You’ll also receive a comprehensive day-by-day itinerary including full details and costs of all optional excursions available on your tour. Your FREE Contiki document wallet and luggage tag* will be sent to you with your travel documents. The wallet is a safe place for your tickets and passports, something you’ll want to keep and use again. *C ontiki reserves the right to substitute an alternative travel accessory for the Contiki document wallet.
How much money do I need? You should be able to use debit and credit cards for most items. You’ll need to allow enough money to cover lunches, some dinners, souvenirs, shopping, drinks, optional excursions and activities, entrance fees to attractions and evening entertainment. It is advisable to start your tour with some cash in local currencies such as Euro, Swiss Franc and Great British Pounds.
Explore more Optional Activities When do I choose? Optionals are arranged and paid for on tour. By leaving the final decisions until then you can choose at the same time as your new friends, you’ll get great value as we get you great rates and your Tour Manager can offer personal advice. Some activities are seasonal and weather dependent as well. How do I pay? You pay on tour in cash (Euro, Swiss Francs, Great British Pound or US$ only).
Am I expected to tip on tour? Every country in the world has different tipping policies and in Europe, within service industries, tipping is common practice. Tipping is totally discretionary and only given if you feel the service has met or exceeded your expectations. Your Tour Manager will assist you with any questions about this while you’re on the road. The same idea applies to your Contiki Crew - if you think they have done a good job then they would be grateful for your recognition by way of a tip, however this is not mandatory – it’s completely up to you.
Brochure authenticity We have put a great deal of effort into producing this brochure. The information given and literature produced by Contiki has been compiled with care and is published in good faith. Sometimes, because of circumstances outside our control, we have to alter some excursions due to seasonal closing or repairs to buildings, etc., especially early or late in the season. If this happens, alternatives will be arranged.
Security Contiki has been running tours for young people since 1962 and in all countries we fully comply with local Travel Industry Laws. In South Africa Contiki is a member of the Association of South African Travel Agents (ASATA).
How much luggage can I bring? Luggage is restricted to a maximum suitcase size of 73cm x 50cm x 25cm (29” x 20” x 10”) and maximum weight of 20 kg (44lbs) plus one small hand/day bag that can go on the coach with you. On Ski Holidays you may bring one pair of ski boots and skis or a snowboard. Any luggage over the restricted size or amount can be stored with Contiki in London at a nominal charge. Baggage is carried at the owner’s risk and baggage insurance is strongly recommended.
Do I need vaccinations? At the time this brochure went to press (June 2010), no vaccinations were necessary. However, it is wise to check up-to-date information with your travel agent prior to departure. Don’t forget to bring with you any medication that you may require en route, such as antihistamines, antibiotics.

Do I need visas? Please read carefully. Depending on your nationality, you may require visas to enter certain countries included in your tour. You are fully responsible for obtaining all necessary visas prior to the departure of your tour. Contiki are not legally permitted to knowingly allow anybody who does not have a valid visa to join a tour. Consult your travel agent to determine which visas you require and how to obtain them. Schengen Visas The majority of our tours travel in countries that are covered by the Schengen Agreement which relates to visas. Citizens of many countries – eg. Australia, United States, Canada, New Zealand – can travel in the Schengen area without a visa. If you require a visa to enter the Schengen area you only need to obtain one visa which will allow you to travel in all Schengen countries. Multiple Entry Schengen Visas Schengen visas can be issued for single entry or multiple entries. If your tour travels outside of the Schengen area at any point you will require a multiple entry visa. The tour that requires multiple entry Schengen visa is listed below: Spanish Spree. Visas for Non-Schengen Countries Some of our tours also visit countries that are not covered by the Schengen Agreement. You may require visas for countries including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Egypt. Depending on your nationality it may be possible to obtain visas for Egypt upon arrival – you should check before you depart for your tour. Important: 1. Visas can take up to six weeks and a fee is normally charged. 2. Failure to obtain all necessary visas could cause you to miss part of your tour and will result in you incurring considerable expense and inconvenience. 3. It is better to apply for all visas through your travel agent before you leave home. Your travel agent will contact Contiki for full details. 4. Contiki will provide you with Visa contacts from our London base at the Royal National Hotel, if necessary.
Gold Seal Protection Coverage for Cancellation & Return Flight Security: Most tour operators are interested in their passengers only after they reach their destination. With Contiki, however, you get a great deal even before you leave home. Pre-paid Cancellation Option R590 per person: By paying R590 per person Cancellation Option Fee with your deposit, the full amount of your deposit and/or payment to Contiki Holidays will be refunded should you cancel your tour for any reason prior to departure from South Africa. This cancellation option covers the Land arrangements made by Contiki Holidays only. On Your Tour: Should you, or your travel companion, leave at any time during the tour for personal sickness reasons or be required to return to South Africa due to injury, sickness or death, you and your companion will be refunded R90 per person per day for the unused portion of the tour. (Please note that in some cases hotels require a one night cancellation fee). A Doctor’s certificate is required. The Cancellation Option Fee is not refundable for any reason. Return Flight Security: If you or a member of your direct family in South Africa should fall sick* while you are on your Contiki tour, we will take care of the additional cost of tickets for your earlier or later return home in the same class of air travel on the first available flight, provided you hold roundtrip airline tickets on Contiki’s recommended airline(s) booked through Contiki Holidays, South Africa. *Medical certificates as proof of all illness claims must be supplied.
Travel insurance Contiki very strongly recommend that you take out comprehensive insurance cover for cancellation, medical expenses, personal accident, personal baggage, money and public liability before you travel. You may not be accepted on a Contiki holiday unless you have arranged satisfactory insurance. You also agree to indemnify us against all third-party claims, actions, damages and remedies against us arising from your participation in the holiday. For insurance details, please speak to your Travel Agent at the time of making your booking.
Where will I stay? Accommodation is in superior tourist class hotels, ships, and trains. These are described on page 16 and on individual tour pages. On trains in Egypt, two people share a two-berth couchette and facilities are shared. Other train journeys are as detailed in individual itineraries. On overnight ships, cabins with facilities are provided. Depending on the numbers and configuration on your tour, availability of singles can sometimes be limited in some locations. On certain occasions, alternative hotels to those listed in this brochure may be used. Whilst it is the Company’s intention to use hotels of a similar standard and location, no liability can be accepted for any variation of either. Ski holidays: Refer to pages 38-41 for details of accommodation in Austria.
