Set your pulse racing when you ski the slopes at Lake Tahoe, go ‘gator spotting on a high-speed New Orleans swamp trip. Buckle up for a heli-hiking adventure through the Grand Canyon or discover the “real ‘OC’ on a tour around Orange County’s Newport Beach”. And it doesn’t stop there! Ride up front on a Wild West jeep tour in Sedona, enjoy a pint of beer at the Cheers bar in Boston or countdown to blast off at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Don’t rest ‘till you’ve met Mickey at Disneyland or hiked a trail in Bryce Canyon National Park. Once you’ve partied like a rock star, shopped like a celeb and been ‘seen’ in an A-list hang out - it’s a wrap! More on pages 28-48.

CANADA

Cross the border into the wild northern frontier and be blown away by the Rocky Mountains’ jaw-dropping beauty.

Witness a surprising mix of cultures as you travel East to West across the land of the maple leaf, from French-speaking Quebec to the melting pot of Vancouver. Ice walk on the Athabasca Glacier, fly over the rugged Rockies in Banff or discover Jasper’s pristine hiking trails. Paddle your way around Whistler, experience a full throttle quad bike tour in Banff or saddle up for the world’s most famous rodeo - the Calgary Stampede. But if the bright lights of the big city beckon, then get your groove on in a Montreal jazz bar, cheer on the big hitters at a baseball game in Toronto or wander along Gastown’s charming cobbled streets in Vancouver. More on pages 22-25.

Why stick to the storyline when you can choose your own adventure? You’ll be amazed how much free-time you have on a Contiki. Whether you are getting busy, or chilling out in your downtime, we’ve put together the perfect mix of Included Sightseeing and Free Time, allowing you the flexibility to create your very own trip of a lifetime with our optional activities! Of course, everyone is different, so in your free time, Contiki gives you a choice to build on your itinerary with our Optional Activities & Special Evenings Out. We’ve honed the list of what’s on offer based on what our past travellers have asked for, and just as the name indicates, you have the option to opt in or opt out – doing exactly as you like.

Here’s a taster of what’s available: 

Head to a Rodeo

Sunset Cruise harbour

White Water Rafting

4WD Jeep Tour

Boston Trolley Tour

Scenic Mountain Gondola Ride

Universal Studios

Horseback Ride & Steak Fry

Hot Air Ballooning

New York TV & Movie Sites Tour

Helicopter Flights

Disneyland

What are my choices and how much do they cost? On each itinerary page, you'll find a 'FREE TIME' box with a sample of the Optional Activities offered on tour. So you know about them in advance and to help you budget. A complete list is available on our website - go to www.contiki.com/america (or /canada, /alaska, /hawaii, /mexico) - click on the tour you're interested in, then on its 'Optional Excursions' button. Here you'll find descriptions of each Optional Activity, prices and some additional web links. A complete Optional list with pricing will also come with your final documents.

When do I choose and how do I pay? Optionals are arranged and paid for on tour, not beforehand. By leaving the decisions until then, it means: You can choose what interests you and do it at the same time as your new friends. You'll get unbeatable value, as we’ve negotiated amazing rates for each Optional.  An experienced Tour Manager who'll offer you personal advice as well as take care of all the arrangements.  Some activities are seasonal whilst others are weather dependent.  

So deciding on tour, rather than before, makes sense. This will make your vacation hassle-free, better value and more enjoyable, ensuring greater fun, bigger laughs and better stories. Payment will be made on tour and can be made by cash, travellers cheques (in $USD in America or $CAD in Canada) or by credit cards only.

IMPORTANT NOTE please read These options are authentically local, so we don't own or operate them. Some of these activities involve outdoor adventure and can be physically demanding, so there’s always an element of risk. You should make your own decisions about these activities and only participate in activities that you feel comfortable you can handle. It’s also a good idea to check that your insurance includes your participation in adventure activities.

Make a Difference Traveling with Contiki is an adventure – new places, amazing people and what’s even better is that we can do our bit to protect the planet along the way so that those who follow will also have plenty to enjoy.

Our Conservation Foundation To show our commitment we have set up The Leading Travel Companies Conservation Foundation, a non-profit organization that will invest in supporting long term sustainable tourism. Our group of companies is contributing US$1 million per year to fund much needed conservation, community and sustainable tourism projects that will create a better world for future generations to enjoy. To ensure every dollar goes to people and places in need, each project is carefully vetted by the Foundation’s independent Board of Trustees, with Contiki also donating staff time and additional resources to the Foundation. Visit contiki.com/responsibletravel for more information on our Foundation.

We’re a greener way to travel Contiki’s coaches are one of the most environmentally friendly ways to travel so you can breathe easy that your footprint will be a little lighter too. Contiki’s coaches are among the best in Europe and by continually updating our fleet we ensure that not only do you travel in style but that our engines are fuel efficient & environmentally friendly too. Travel carbon neutral and reduce your footprint There is a lot you can do to make a difference while traveling. Small things like switching off air-conditioning and taking shorter showers can save both energy & water. Or refilling your drink bottle instead of buying a new one each day – it all adds up! You can choose to travel carbon neutral and offset the carbon emissions from your flight, accommodation or tour, or all of the above! By paying a small contribution, you’ll be supporting sustainable energy projects that work to reduce the harmful greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. See www.contiki.com/responsibletravel for more on offsetting your travel.

Contiki’s committed to making a difference We’re working with our hotel and various other partners around the world to continue to find ways to save energy and reduce resource consumption and waste. Not only do we think globally, but we act locally within our regional offices with initiatives such as introducing comprehensive recycling schemes and being proactive with educating our staff how they can ‘make a difference’ to the environment both at work and at home. One exciting program we have launched in 2008 is our Staff Volunteer Program where Contiki encourages each team member to select a charity of their choice and gives them two work days per year to get out there and lend a hand. Our Company believes and is committed to the ecological and economical use of raw material and the re-use of existing resources. This brochure has been printed on environmentally friendly paper certified by Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) meaning the pulp used for its production originates from well managed forests and other controlled sources.

Please either pass this brochure on to someone else when finished, or recycle it.

Ole! Contiki is bursting to announce the release of our brand new destination! All about Mexico: 3 words that perfectly describe Mexico: culture, history and fun! It’s a place that never ceases to amaze travellers. Diversity and long, colorful history incorporate influences from the ancient Mayan civilization, the all – powerful Aztecs and Spanish colonialism – all providing a rich mix that make up today’s Mexico. From the modern metropolis of Mexico City, Contiki’s Mexican tours cover the country’s contrasting landscapes - wind through beautiful mountains and hills, visit deserted beaches, turquoise waters and glitzy resorts on the Pacific coast, explore the lush jungles of the Yucatan, scramble over ancient ruins, and wander through time-warped colonial towns.

The low-down on our Mexico destinations Mexico City: a fantastic cosmopolitan city with a strong culture of art and history, a mix of colonial and modern architecture, and world class shopping from boutiques to bazaars Acapulco: located on a beautiful bay, with calm beaches, white sands and an unbeatable nightlife. Morelia: a colonial city, with a reputation for great festivals and traditional artisan crafts.

And it’s not all tacos and burritos! Mexican food is second to none – with a huge range of regional specialties and fresh seafood. Plus to top it off, the people in this country love a good party, which means the club and bar scene is sizzling.

Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo: a picturesque area with a traditional Mexican feel. Ecotourism features strongly as do its gorgeous beaches.

Mexico with Contiki: Contiki has designed it’s 3 touring itineraries in Mexico to combine a balance of the best the country has to offer - culture, food, nightlife, shopping, adventure activities, beaches... the list goes on. From cities to resorts and even an island stay, we’ve packed the good stuff in.

Merida: this place is all about food, music and traditional Mayan heritage!

Travelling with Contiki in Mexico means a slightly more intimate sized group. Of course, you’ll be in the capable hands of our professional and knowledgeable Tour Managers who work with local guides to ensure you get the most out of each spot you visit. And you’ll do it in style in modern, fully equipped coaches with 2 hotel and resort stays – there’s no camping on our trips!

The pre-Hispanic culinary heritage has created a fusion of Spanish, French and Cuban cuisines which is quite unique. Isla Mujeres: known as ‘The Island of Women’ and featuring a temple to the goddess of fertility. Isla Mujeres is a beautiful Caribbean island and snorkelling is world-class. Chichen Itza: this is one of the 7 new wonders of the world, an ancient Mayan capital, and important archaeological site. Cancun: a famous and spectacular beach resort destination on the Caribbean Sea, offering all sorts of watersports and a big nightlife!

So much to do! do There’s so many activities to choose from - check some of these out!*

NEW FOR 2009

For those who love the snow, or want to try it out for the very first time, Contiki have introduced ski and snowboarding departures to the Winter playground of Lake Tahoe. These departures are incorporated into the winter months of 3 of our existing year-round tours - Wild Western, LA to the Bay and California Highlights.

Itinerary WINTER CALIFORNIA HIGHLIGHTS (+ski) For days 1-4 see days 8-11 below; for days 5-7 see page 29 for California Highlights year-round itinerary. WINTER LA TO THE BAY (+ski) For days 1-7 see pages 30-31 for LA to the Bay year-round itinerary; for days 8-11 see below. WINTER WILD WESTERN (+ski) For days 1-7 and 12-14 see pages 42-43 for Wild Western year-round itinerary; for days 8-11 see below.

How does it work? These itineraries are exactly the same as the regular year round itineraries on each tour, right up until the day they depart Las Vegas. Then they skip the visit to Yosemite, take 1 night less in San Francisco and instead, pack 3 fun-filled days of snow action at Lake Tahoe instead. Lake Tahoe is one of North America’s most beautiful lakes and also one of it’s premier ski resorts, straddling 2 states - California and Nevada. The views are magnificent - undulating snowy mounds providing a striking contrast to the forest of green pines, glistening blue water and pale snow-capped mountains. It’s the perfect blend of amazingly spectacular scenery, pristine mountains and a pumping nightlife. Where else

can you find a place that offers amazing natural beauty plus the 24 hour non-stop bling of Vegas-style casinos and clubs? Contiki travelers can choose to hit the slopes at 3 of Tahoe’s best ski areas including Heavenly, Kirkwood & Sierra-at-Tahoe. The average annual snowfall here is 10.67 metres, so you’ll be sure to enjoy fantastic conditions. And with so much fantastic terrain, there’s a perfect balance of something for everyone – beginners, intermediates and advanced alike. Activities abound including skiing (both downhill and cross-country), snowboarding, ice-skating and snowmobiling. In this absolutely unbeatable setting there’s definitely something for everyone!

Days 8: Las Vegas to Tahoe. Say goodbye to the party in the desert and hello to the adventures awaiting you in the mountains around Lake Tahoe. Days 9–10: Tahoe. For the next two days, hit the slopes of 3 world-class resorts for legendary skiing and snowboarding. Or try out the many other snowbased activities available, like ice-skating, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, or sledding. And when you’re ready to head indoors, tap into the Lake’s highenergy nightlife with its Vegas-style casinos and bigname entertainment. Day 11: Tahoe to San Francisco. Head down from the mountains to the rollercoaster streets, countless countercultures, and salt-lick breeze of San Fran.

Head to contiki.com for full daily itineraries on each of these tours in the winter months.

Please speak to your travel agent or visit the U.S. State Department website: www.travel.state.gov

What are the age restrictions in bars and casinos? Laws in the United States dealing with purchasing alcohol, entering nightclubs & bars, and gambling in casinos differ from many other countries around the world. In the United States, you must be 21 years of age to purchase alcohol, enter most nightclubs & bars, and gamble in casinos. Acceptable forms of identification to prove age include a valid passport or United States driver’s license. Laws in Canada differ from the United States, with 18 being the legal age in Alberta and Quebec and 19 being the legal age in British Columbia and Ontario for the above activities.

Do I need vaccinations? At the time this brochure went to press (July 2008), no vaccinations were necessary. However, it is wise to check up to date information with your travel agent prior to departure. Don’t forget to bring with you any medication that you may require en route, e.g. antihistamines, antibiotics.

How much money do I need? Credit and debit cards are accepted in the USA & Canada however you should carry some US Dollar Traveler Checks as they are easy to change into local currency and are a good backup if you are unable to find a bank. Remember to budget for lunch, some dinners, entrance fees to attractions, optional excursions, nightclubs, souvenirs and drinks. A full list of optional excursions (payable by major Credit Cards, Cash or Traveler Checks) and approximate costs will be sent with your travel documents or can be found online at www.contiki.com

(ix) Contiki is responsible for taking care to arrange and conduct your vacation properly. With you in mind, we have accepted applications from and interviewed numerous potential employees, and then we select only those people whom we believe in our best judgement would be responsible and congenial, Tour Managers, Representatives and Drivers.
