FROM ONE MAID OF HONOR

hile this magazine, and probably most magazines of this nature, focus a lot on giving the bride advice and ideas, I wanted to take a moment and not forget about a very integral part of the wedding process: the maid of honor! As I said earlier, I was a maid of honor in my dear friend’s wedding last October, and it really was one of my most cherished experiences. There’s stressful moments, don’t be fooled, but there’s nothing quite like being trusted by your closest friends to do one of the most important tasks.
TO ANOTHER Tips and tricks for the MOH by Mackenzie Tewksbury photos by Matt Neal

23
So, while I am by no means an expert, I wanted to share some tricks and tips that I learned for anyone reading this magazine in the maid of honor season of life that will hopefully help you through being the on-call therapist, best gal pal, the party-planner, the righthand woman.
1
Be a decision maker! I’ve heard from many brides
2
that their groom was a “Whatever you want, honey!” groom and while that’s admirable at times, brides make a lot of decisions, and it can get easily overwhelming. I remember my friend once texted me and said “I’ve made so many decisions today. Just tell me which one to pick.” So, don’t be afraid to tell her what you think!
There is really no such thing as too early. Get the contact information for the other bridesmaids as soon as possible. Start connecting early. Make sure everyone knows each other. Be transparent so there are no surprises later down the road about plans, dates, money or anything. Coordinate calendars right away! Be the line of communication for any questions or confusion.
3
It’s really all about communication! Have a legit chat with your bride about what her perfect bridal shower, bachelorette party, engagement party, etc., look like. Honor those wishes to the best of your ability.
4
Be a pal! If there is anything that the bride needs to do that you can do instead, go ahead and do it. Take anything off of her plate that you can.
24
Her
I've made so many decisions today 5
Be a liason. The less the bride has to worry about, the better. The more you can answer, the better.
6
Pinterest and Etsy will be your friend for all the cute ideas and props. I got a ton of cute little props on Etsy for cheap!
7
Practice makes perfect when it comes to the probably most dreaded part about being a maid of honor: the toast. I chose a cute little story I had about the bride and groom and I practiced it on my way to work every day. Oh, that reminds me: don’t forget about the groom in your speech!
8
I made an “Emergency Kit” for the day of the wedding and stuffed it with solutions to absolutely anything that could go wrong. Bobby pins, band-aids, Q-tips, tampons, chapstick, breath mints, advil, granola bars, etc.
Just tell me which one to pick. W E D D I N G

9
Make sure your bride eats. She will be so overwhelmed and busy at the reception, it’s often hard for her to eat a lot. And lots of alcohol on an empty stomach is not a recipe for success.
10
Be in tune with your brides style. Follow her pinterest board. You’re the maid of honor for a reason, so make sure you can make your own suggestions or pick up something at the store that you know will fit into her vision!

TO MY BRIDE AND GROOM, Congratulations. Months of planning have gone into this day. I’m always excited for you the most. What gave you inspiration for you wedding? What first dance song sings to you as a couple the most? What are your stories, morning glories? This line might be “stolen” from another movie but my absolute favorite moment of the wedding is when the wedding couple see each other for the first time at opposite ends of the aisle. When I was in my best friend's wedding, I didn’t look to see her coming down the aisle, I knew what her dressed looked like (perks of being the best friend). I looked to her future partner. His goofy grin said everything. He was in love. She was in love. They were in love, and still are, and I’m still beaming thinking about it. I hope that the two of you are here because you truly love each other. I hope you gathered you family and friends to join you on the special day, but that you make it about the two of you. I hope you have fun, seriously! You’re paying for the event and my paycheck, you have got to go have fun! Don’t party too hard, because the morning will come sooner than you think! I hope that you helped each other plan the wedding too. So often I have seen weddings that you could tell were very one sided. You both have an idea for what you want, make sure you put the care into voicing those wants during planning! I hope it rains because rain on a wedding day is good luck! I hope you eat everything on your plate! If your secret service agents are doing their job, you should be able to eat in peace. I hope you smile, because we, the wait staff are smiling for you. We hope that you live a beautiful life together. There will be trials and tribulations, we won’t sugar coat that. At times you will need space from each other. We hope you give each other that space. Cry together. Laugh together. Dine and talk with each other, but also be comfortable with silences at time. Dance with each other tonight and never stop dancing. May you live a long life together full of moments that make you realize how much you love each other. We hope that we could be the best wait staff for you. Thank you for your patronage, and get home safe.
SINCERELY, YOUR WAITER. www.reflector.com/her
