From the Publisher's Desk

A Lake Less Traveled "I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference." – Robert Frost, “The Road Not Taken” How true this often is for many of us. We make plans to achieve certain goals, and we assume those plans will take us down certain paths, but in fact as John Lennon once observed, "Life is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans.” This is how I remember the day when my full time journalism career began more than 25 years ago. I had my heart set on working for a daily newspaper in the Greater Boston area where I grew up and went to college. But for some reason, the opportunity did not materialize. Finally in May 1993 I went on an interview at The Citizen, a small daily paper in Laconia, N.H., on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. On the drive up, I kept thinking, “I really don’t want this job. I will just enjoy the beautiful scenery.” Then the interview went really well, I mean really well, and I knew they were going to offer me the job. Why? Before I knew it, I found myself covering the onslaught of thousands of bikers during Motorcycle Week at Weirs Beach, structure fires, motor vehicle accidents, petty crimes and misdemeanors, and I had no idea what I was doing. The Lakes Region and I were not the best bedfellows. I wasn’t a downhill skier, and I didn’t own a boat, so what the heck was I doing here? Simple. I needed a full-time job and experience and this was the opportunity that presented itself. If I had rejected it and waited for the next bus, I might not get another chance. So I made the best of it; I worked extremely hard, paid my dues, got paid next to nothing and just kept getting better at my chosen profession. During the first few months, I was convinced I would end up going home to Massachusetts. But that did not happen. Instead, I met my wife, Mary, on a blind date at the Tilton Diner, and we ended up getting married in the summer of 1995. We lived in the Lakes Region for six years, and I grew to love the place. We ended up owning a boat, a 19-foot open bowrider and mastering the Big Lake as well as all of the other nearby bodies of water including Winnisquam Lake, Squam Lake, Newfound Lake, the Rangely Lakes and Sebago Lake. I grew to appreciate the beauty of nature and simple things like the peace of mind of sitting beside a summer campfire or witnessing a deer swim from one island to another

as part of its morning commute. The Lakes Region is also where I took up golf, a game that I still love. In truth, my post-college, adult life began there and contributed a great deal to who I am today. I went from someone who was afraid to drive long distances for fear of breaking down when there were no cell phones to save us to someone who loved driving everywhere. When we bought our first SUV in 1996, we drove everywhere from the top of Mount Washington to Prince Edward Island, Canada. I also had no fear of driving in the worst winter weather because when you are a reporter you don’t get to pick and choose when breaking news happens. You just go. I remember times when I drove out on frozen Winnipesaukee to get to the scene of a fire at some island cottage or through Franconia Notch in a snowstorm just to cover a court hearing in the North Country. Each time I came back with the story, I felt like I really accomplished something.

Eventually, both of our career paths took us to the New Hampshire Seacoast in 2000 and to Maine in 2006 where we live now. The Citizen, a casualty of the digital age, is gone now. Whenever we take our son, Patrick, to places like Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough, Brewster Beach to swim in Wolfeboro or for a traditional summer jaunt up to North Conway, I see the years I spent working and living near the Big Lake in a different light. Robert Frost once wrote that he had a “lover’s quarrel with the world.” I always felt that way about Lake Winnipesaukee. It was once the source of my greatest stress and anxiety when I was a reporter, and it was also a place that gave me so much happiness and wonderful memories. Even today I find it hard to reconcile the two.

The greatest takeaway for me is that sometimes we go where life takes us and hope that we end up doing the work we want to do. It takes great courage and strong will to follow your passion. When we choose to be true to ourselves and pursue worthwhile goals, wonderful things often result. This was the case in 1993 when I found myself plying my trade on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. The same was true when I started Neighbors of the Kennebunks Magazine in the fall of 2015 and continues to be true today thanks to so many of you who have made this endeavor so worthwhile and special. Now let’s get back to summer. Robert Cook is the publisher of Neighbors of the Kennebunks Magazine. He can be reached at robert.cook@bestversionmedia.com.

August Feature Potential, The Salvation Army, Animal Welfare Society, Habitat for Humanity of York County and a scholarship fund for the arts at Kennebunk High School. Freeman of Hurlbutt Designs echoes McConnell’s sentiment. “This year we were able to raise over $81,000 for our community and make the festival once again represent our values and goals,” she says. “People stepped up and said, ‘I can spearhead this event.’ John Martin at The Colony took on the tasting event, Stripers for their pig roast, Maine Art Hill for the block party. Walker’s Maine took over the chef’s night out event,” McConnell explains. “All of these people who had been involved before said they could shoulder more of the planning work.” The Colony’s Martin adds, “I have had some history with the festival and have had strong opinions on ways it could be better. Realizing that the previous organization was not open to suggestion/change, I took a backseat and substantially reduced The Colony Hotel's participation for the past few years. As things were unfolding, I realized that there was an opportunity to make a change for the better and it would not happen if I sat back and watched. In short: You can't participate if you don't have a seat at the table.” Freeman sums up the decision for Hurlbutt Designs: “We wanted to save this festival and bring it back to our community.”

Residents and Business Leaders

Chart a New Course for Port Festival When local residents and business come together, great things happen. After Maine Media Collective cancelled the annual Kennebunkport Festival on April 30, it took a village to turn what could have been a loss for the local community – and for area charities that benefit from the festival’s fundraising efforts – into a best-ever event. “We had five weeks to pull it off,” says Emily McConnell of McConnell, LLC, who was hired as the festival’s director on May 1. As a former employee of Maine Media Collective, she had extensive experience with the festival and was able to jump in and oversee all the details in the super-short timeline. Local businesses and 4

residents met on May 2 with a shared goal: preserve the spirit of the Kennebunkport Festival to the best of their ability. McConnell is quick to credit the many hands that made the event a success: John Spain of Maine Art Hill, Louise Hurlbutt and Melissa Freeman of Hurlbutt Designs, John Martin of The Colony, Justin Grimes of The Kennebunkport Resort Collection, Danielle Johnson Walker of Walker's Maine and Jim Darroch of Sunset Grown, who worked together as the Kennebunkport Festival Steering Committee to make sure the show would go on.

June 4-10 marked the reinvention of the Kennebunkport Festival into a week of fun and festivities, all to benefit great causes. “I am thrilled with how it went this year,” McConnell says, pointing out that through the group’s efforts, the festival raised a record-breaking amount for local charitable organizations. In the past, the festival generally raised about $30,000, she explains. “This year, we were able to raise more than $80,000.”Charitable contributions included all ticket sales and net proceeds and benefitted such local organizations as The Good Shepard Food Bank and Community Outreach Services of The Kennebunks, Full Plates Full

NEIGHBORS OF THE KENNEBUNKS

This year’s festival preserved favorite events such as the cocktail party and Art of Dining dinners while recreating some of the large-scale events from the past and offering new ones. Each host was able to choose the charity that would benefit from their event. Martin, like McConnell, was inspired by the willingness of the community to step up. “In the process of planning the event, I have been inspired by the response I received from the local food and beverage community. As most know, this is a challenging business with little — sometimes no — profit. So many of our local restaurants were immediate in a response to participate. I then had the chance to connect with business owners. I think other than the day of the event, my best day in late May was where I was going from restaurant to restaurant hanging out in the kitchens and talking with chefs and owners. Most were busy and kept working while we met. A real treat.”

opportunity for our company to give back to those most in need. I viewed my involvement in the steering committee as an opportunity to preserve this tradition and to put the Kennebunkport Resort Collection's resources towards making a positive difference for so many worthy, local charities,” he says. “I love that our spirit of community is so strong,” Freeman says. “It is truly amazing that we were able to come together in a matter of a few short weeks and pull together a festival that almost tripled charitable contributions of festivals in previous years. Everyone involved was incredibly giving of their time and resources. I am proud and honored to have been involved.” “This experience has demonstrated the resiliency of our community. The level of hard work, determination and commitment that went into preserving this annual event was awe-inspiring. The business-to-business comradery that was created and strengthened through this experience makes me proud to live and work in the Kennebunks,” Grimes says. “The Kennebunkport Resort Collection is very excited to continue the tradition of the Kennebunkport Festival, and we look forward to what the future has in store for the event.” Also looking to the future, Martin adds, “I think we have a great opportunity to make an event that will promote our town and all of the wonderful things it has to offer. Now is the time for lovers and haters of the old Kennebunkport Festival to work together to make a ‘true’ Kennebunkport festival.” Learn more about the Kennebunkport Festival at its website, https:/ kennebunkportmainelodging. com/kennebunkport-festival-review/. Jennifer Saunders serves as the content coordinator of Neighbors of the Kennebunks Magazine. She can be reached by calling jsaunders@bestversionmedia.com.

“We saw a lot of community members participate in the event and come enjoy the festival, there was an excitement in the community,” McConnell adds. “The greatest benefit to the community is the amount of money we were able to give to these organizations that do so much for the Kennebunks, York County and the whole the state.” Grimes, who is managing director of the Kennebunkport Resort Collection, agrees. “The Kennebunkport Festival has been a perennial

How do you update a building known for its architecture and long history of being a landmark on Kennebunk’s Main Street? “Very carefully and with a lot of patience,” said Jim Dowe, project leader for the Main Street renovation and facilities manager at Kennebunk Savings. Originally constructed in 1806, the building located at104 Main Street has been home to Kennebunk Savings since it opened for business on May 1, 1871.

Please stop by 104 Main Street in Kennebunk on Friday, August 24, from 4-6 PM to see the newly refreshed interior! Jenn Straetz serves as the public relations and events coordinator at Kennebunk Savings Bank in Kennebunk, Maine.

Today, the building anchors the picturesque streetscape of Kennebunk’s downtown. It is an iconic local landmark known for its colonial architecture, beautifully manicured gardens and charming curb appeal. That’s why maintaining the Main Street building’s original architectural elements has been of utmost importance to the bank throughout the remodel of its interior. This renovation marks the first major upgrade to the interior of the bank since the 1980s.

As a nod to the history of Kennebunk’s downtown and the bank’s 147-year presence there, the lobby walls will showcase three large, historic photos of the area circa 1890 through 1940 furnished by the Brick Store Museum. “It was important that we honor the history of the bank, the distinctive qualities of the building’s architecture and our ongoing commitment to the success of the town of Kennebunk,” said Bradford C. Paige, president of Kennebunk Savings since 2009. The original structure was a three-story building that was completely rebuilt after burning down in 1870. After its reconstruction, Kennebunk Savings moved in and occupied a small room within Ocean National Bank. The building was enlarged in 1893 and again in1903 to accommodate the two banking institutions. Then in 1927, a new addition was authorized to the rear of the original structure. As the assets of the bank expanded and the area served by the bank grew, there became an even greater need for space. In 1965, Kennebunk Savings purchased the entire building and has had the honor of being its caretaker ever since. The public is invited to Kennebunk Savings’ Main Office for an open house reception to view the remodeled lobby and enjoy light refreshments.

Thanks to fundraising and generous donors, the Kennebunks now have two new beach wheelchairs to loan out to the public. One chair is stationed by at the Seaside Inn for use at Kennebunk beaches, and the other chair is stationed at the Tides Beach Club at Goose Rocks Beach. Both are available to rent through the towns' recreation departments, Kennebunk Rec and Kennebunkport Parks & Recreation ($15/daily). "I spent my summers on Maine beaches, I fell in love with my husband Michael on the beach," said Melanie Montembeau, who was paralyzed two years ago in an accident and now uses a wheelchair. "This new beach wheelchair opens up the possibility of enjoying my new 'normal.' This gives me an additional piece of healing. My happy, calming place has always been staring at waves and smelling salt air." The Kennebunk-Kennebunkport-Arundel chamber of commerce spearheaded the initiative two years ago after fielding multiple requests for beach-accessible wheelchairs.

Always open

Visitors will appreciate a brighter, more open and welcoming lobby and transaction area with improved office and meeting spaces that provide more options for privacy. Special attention was paid to the building’s interior architecture, the treatment of the large windows and even the antique clock that has hung on the wall for decades. Another significant change includes the replacement of the traditional tall teller counter with a lower profile counter that improves opportunities for interacting with customers.

"We researched options in the area, and there were very few in the area, and none in Kennebunk," said Laura Snyder Smith, marketing & events manager for the Chamber. "We had a mother call, looking for a wheelchair for her daughter, who was returning home from Boston in a wheelchair after a paralyzing accident. That really stuck a chord because the beach is one of the most therapeutic places in the world for me, for many people. Everyone should be able to access our local beaches." Over the next two years the Chamber collected donations raised at the 2016 Harvest Fest pancake breakfast, 2016 Prelude shuttle, 2016 Prelude Gingerbread House Festival, plus donations from McNamara Family Foundation in memory of Tommy McNamara, the Kennebunk Portside Rotary, Kennebunk Rotary Club, Rosa Slack's Kennebunk High School advisory class and the Bruen family. "From the bottom of my heart, I thank everyone who was involved in acquiring the chair," said Montembeau. "I hope it brings immense joy to others.” For rental details and information, call the Chamber at 967-0857 or visit GoKennebunks.com. METHOD: Preheat your grill to 375 degrees farenheit. Combine the mango, cucumber, jalapeno and red onion as well as the chopped cilantro in a bowl.

'Wicked Tuna'

BY DEBBIE MEIER

Debbie Meier grew up in Canada and has always had a passion for the culinary arts, cooking and sharing the delicious foods she prepares with others. She is well known in the Kennebunks for her delectable meals. Her focus is on simple and easy tips that save time and money in the kitchen. Look for her monthly feature right here in Neighbors of the Kennebunks magazine.

Squeeze your lime over the mixture, and set aside. Brush the tuna steaks with a good olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Brush some olive oil on the grill before placing your steaks on it.

Recipe This Summer

Cook the steaks for approximately three-and-a-half minutes on each side. The center should be raw like sushi or the tuna will be tough and dry. Allow steaks to rest for five or 10 minutes before serving.

DEB’S TIPS:

This month's recipe is a combination of three of my favorite things: grilling, mango and my favorite TV show, “Wicked Tuna!” That's right folks, we are going to grill a tuna steak accompanied by a mango salsa! I've named this recipe after my friend Tyler McLaughlin, whose boat the Pinwheel was the winning boat on this season's “Wicked Tuna.” This dish is not only juicy and succulent, it is also vibrant with the colors of summer that will make any mouth water. This recipe is simple and nutritious with basic ingredients that pack a big punch of flavor. Nothing says summer like this dish. It certainly is a crowd-pleaser, so let's get grilling!

1.

Make friends with your local fishmonger! They are the experts and usually like to show off their knowledge. Take advantage of that; you will appreciate that for your future purchases.

2.

Using lime juice not only adds acidic value to your recipes, it also brings out the vibrant colors of fruits and vegetables as well as preventing them from browning.

3.

As with a thick beefsteak, you should always let your seafood steaks come up to room temperature before cooking. This ensures an even temperature throughout the fish.

INGREDIENTS: MANGO SALSA

TUNA STEAKS

2 ripe mangos, peeled and diced

1/2 cup cucumber, peeled and diced

1/3 cup diced red onion

1 tbsp chopped jalapeno

1/3 cup roughly chopped cilantro leaves

3 tbsp lime juice

The number of steaks depends on how many you're serving. Make sure you get your local fishmonger to cut your steaks at least an inch-and-a-half thick

and all approximately the same size. This insures even cooking for all steaks.

4 tbsp olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

Trust Trail Fest

Ready, Set, Run! BY DAVID JOURDAN | PHOTO COURTESY OF JOE CARTER FILMS

It’s a warm, sunny day in August, just perfect for a jog through the woods and a cold beer at the finish. The crowd of 10K trail runners is gathered at the edge of the Emmons field, the more ambitious half-marathoners alongside on the tree-lined Gravelly Brook Road. “Good luck!” I say to the runner next to me, a new-found trail buddy. A last warning from the starter ... “Watch your feet, stay on the course, and have fun!” The signal sounds, and we’re off! It’s an easy lope down the wide road for a few hundred yards as the crowd quickly disperses, competitive runners already disappearing around the bend as I jockey for position with the others, careful not to step on the heels in front of me. In a minute, I hear the course marshal shouting directions, “Half-marathoners keep going, 5K and 10K to your left!” I duck into the woods and follow the line up the hill and head for the green blazes of Jenne’s Loop.

Garage Doors for every budget!

Now we’re on a real trail. Roots and rocks, twists and turns at every step. “Pick up your feet!” I keep reminding myself. Soon I come to the first stream crossing. The old narrow, bouncy (and sometimes slippery) catwalk I remembered had been replaced by a stout, wide, level boardwalk! Cool! Over the previous fall and spring the volunteer trail crew had been working hard to upgrade all the crossings, often with help from local businesses and high school volunteers. Good work!

Now the field is stringing out as slower joggers are falling back and the “real” runners have scampered on ahead. I try to keep an eye out for the green blazes, but it’s risky to glance up ... then I notice the distinctive course logo blazes the appear from time to time, placed

conveniently lower so one can follow the right track without looking up and risking a stumble. I hardly notice the beautiful Batson River on my right ... making a mental note to come back and enjoy the burbling Teal Hole Falls some other more appropriate time! Soon the “10K - 1mi.” marker appears, and I plow ahead. Back onto the open Emmons field, I pass the KCT Headquarters as the crowds cheer us on. A quick drink at the water stop before the Batson River bridge, and it’s off to the Learning Trail. No time to stop and read the interpretive signs, but I’ll be sure to come back later, with the kids. I do notice the spooky Washburn Cemetery and appreciate the curvy boardwalk over the swamp. At the far end of the Learning Trail the 5K runners peel off to the left as I press on along the Batson River Trail towards Tyler Brook. Through thick forests, across open fields and along the banks of the wide river it’s hard to keep focused! Another marshal directs traffic as we cross Beachwood Ave., loop around Tyler Brook and head back. I hit the 5-mile marker as we recross Beachwood, on the home stretch now! Returning to the Learning Trail, we continue around the loop, rejoining the 5K route. As I emerge onto the Emmons property and open fields the 6-mile post goes by, and it’s just a few hundred yards to the finish line and a cold beer! Half-marathon runners get to enjoy the beautiful Smith Preserve as part of their 13.1 mile run, with only a one-mile stretch of country road to interrupt their woodland experience. Whether you’re looking to break a personal best, or just out for an easy 3-mile walk in the woods, come on out and enjoy the trails at the Trust Trail Fest!
