A Coruña OCEÁNICA Y ‘COOL’

A Coruña no es sólo una ciudad; es un océano, el Atlántico, que la tiñe, abraza y estimula. Todo en ella, desde su especial luz hasta el latir de su día a día, está marcado por el mar, presente en todos sus rincones. A Coruña es no cansarse de otear la inmensidad del océano Atlántico, desde el mirador del monte de San Pedro, o desde el paseo marítimo más largo de Europa, más de 13 kilómetros de playas, acantilados y calas.

A Coruña es también caminar por las callejuelas medievales de su Ciudad Vieja,

en sus parques y jardines o ante las fachadas acristaladas de la avenida de la Marina. Pero siempre se siente cerca el mar, su olor, su sabor, sus murmullos. Una grabación captada en la playa de Orzán en la que se escuchan olas y gaviotas ha sido considerada el sonido del mar más bonito del mundo, en un concurso organizado en Slupsk (Polonia). Es el océano que nos llama y nos cita en Galicia, en A Coruña.

Avilés

ASOMBROSA Y ‘COOL’

Avilés invita al paseo sin prisas, a la contemplación serena. A recorrer con tranquilidad las amables calles de su casco histórico, apreciando sus soportales, plazas, iglesias y palacios como etapas de un viaje a través de la historia y sus estilos arquitectónicos, desde el siglo XII hasta el presente. A dejarse llevar por sus paisajes naturales en verde y azul, adentrándose en sus extensas dunas, asomándose a sus acantilados, sumergiéndose en el mar de sus playas.

Dinámica, fresca, audaz. Gijón, desde luego, tiene una historia milenaria -los romanos instalaron termas en ella-, viejos cafés, un jardín botánico maravilloso y el poso que le da encontrarse en pleno Camino de Santiago y en el vértice cantábrico de la Ruta Vía de la Plata. Pero lo que más sorprende al descubrirla es su vitalidad.

Aquí siempre está pasando algo.

Conciertos de los grandes grupos internacionales en gira y de los nuevos músicos locales en pequeños

espacios. Festivales como el de FicXixón, con su cine alternativo.

Actividades continuas en la calle, en el emblemático Teatro Jovellanos o en la inmensa Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura…

Desde esta atalaya asturiana sobre el mar Cantábrico, no extraña que algunos estén “locos por Gijón”.

Santander ELEGANTE Y ‘COOL’

Pocos conceptos tan difíciles de definir como la elegancia. Tiene que ver con el buen gusto, con la gracia en el estilo, con la belleza sin duda, con la armonía… Se es elegante o no se es. Y la capital de Cantabria lo es.

Basta con situarse en la península de la Magdalena, ese hermoso montículo entre playas, y levantar la vista hacia el Palacio Real en el que veraneaba la Corte española y ahora lo hacen los estudiosos de la Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo.

Santander es elegante por su forma de asomarse al puerto y la espectacular bahía, miembro del exclusivo club de las más bellas del mundo. Por sus grandes avenidas, sus serenos jardines y el pintoresco Paseo de Pereda, con sus típicas casas con miradores. Pero también por su tradición marinera y por sus rincones en los que disfrutar de un vino y un pincho. Por su manera, sencillamente elegante, de armonizar tradición y vanguardia.

San Sebastián COSMOPOLITA Y ‘COOL’

Será por la proximidad de la frontera francesa. O por su pasado como lugar en el que veraneaba y jugaba a la ruleta la realeza y el ‘gran mundo’.

Será por el influjo de las grandes estrellas de la pantalla que visitan su Festival de Cine cada septiembre y de las de la música, presentes a lo largo de todo el año. Será por los ciudadanos de todo el mundo que por unos días gustan disfrutar de su calidad de vida. O por la propia visión internacional de los donostiarras.

Será por todo ello que Donostia / San Sebastián es la más cosmopolita de las ciudades vascas.

El cosmopolitismo no es el único secreto de una capital capaz de tener un tamaño pequeño, a escala humana, pero con la actividad cultural de una gran urbe. De combinar la belleza de sus montes al borde del mar con su actividad urbana. De moverse a pie o en bicicleta y practicar surf sin dejar de ser referente gastronómico internacional.

as ‘cool cities’ de la España Verde son para vivirlas a pie y sin planes predeterminados, compartiendo los espacios urbanos con sus habitantes, dejando que nuestros pasos nos guíen libre y caprichosamente por el laberinto de sus calles, estando abiertos a lo mucho que estas ciudades a escala humana nos ofrecen. Detrás de cada esquina puede aparecer una sorpresa.

Hay que caminar, desviarse, fijarse, asomarse, curiosear. Callejeando podemos tropezar con… el mayor conjunto acristalado del mundo. Pasa en la avenida de la Marina de A Coruña, que por algo es conocida como la ‘ciudad de cristal’. Los vidrios sin fin de sus fachadas reflejan todas las luces del día.

Podemos perdernos por calles solitarias de aire antiguo, capaces de hacernos sentir en otro tiempo y, sin salir del mismo casco histórico, aparecer en mitad del actual y vitalista bullicio de las zonas de bares y restaurantes en las que reponer fuerzas es un placer.

0, 1, 2, 3, 4… y así hasta 16. El paseo de la Playa de San Lorenzo, eje y lugar de encuentro de Gijón, está jalonado por números, que identifican las 16 escaleras de acceso a la playa. A la duda de por cuál bajar se suma la de si volver atrás y perdernos por otros rincones de la ciudad. _

El sol está a punto de esconderse tras el mar Cantábrico, que cambia mil veces de color antes de dejar paso a la noche. Un momento mágico que podemos vivir desde… ≤

Las plazas, calles y callejas de los cascos históricos, hechas a la medida del peatón, ejercen un fuerte influjo, pero en las ‘cool cities’ también escuchamos la llamada del mar. Hay paseos marítimos que no nos cansamos de recorrer, porque siempre son distintos. Los cambian la hora del día, las estaciones, el tiempo meteorológico y hasta nuestro estado de ánimo. Si nos gusta andar, en San Sebastián nos aguardan siete kilómetros de paseo urbano sobre el mar sin tener que cruzar ni una carretera ni apartar la mirada del horizonte.

Sentimos el ruido de nuestros pasos sobre el pavimento, acaso deambulando protegidos por soportales como los de la calle Galiana de Avilés, hasta que decidimos parar y sentarnos en una plaza en la que nos quedaríamos para siempre. Seguro que encontramos la nuestra.

¿Dónde vemos anochecer hoy? _

En nuestro caminar, podemos encontrar un establecimiento artesanal o un comercio a la última. O bien dejarnos arrastrar por los olores y colores que ofrecen los mercados tradicionales de alimentos frescos, como el de la Esperanza, en Santander.

VERDE COBRE. Es el característico color de la fachada del Palacio de Festivales de Cantabria, centro de referencia de la música clásica con el Festival Internacional de Santander o el concurso de piano Paloma O’Shea.

ROJO. Así luce el vestido de ‘La niña de los pies descalzos’, que pintó Pablo Picasso en A Coruña.

Una ruta permite seguir sus huellas en la ciudad en que vivió de niño y por primera vez cogió los pinceles. ≤

NEGRO. Tanto como una buena novela negra. O como la Semana Negra de Gijón, que desde su nacimiento en 1988 congrega a los

La amplia paleta cromática de las ‘cool cities’ se inclina hacia los tonos azules, pero aquí nos quedamos con cuatro colores menos evidentes.

BLANCO. Igual que las formas curvas del Centro Niemeyer, que impulsa la creación cultural desde Avilés. Un sueño que empezó cuando el arquitecto brasileño dibujó sus líneas sobre un papel en blanco. ≤

L

as ‘cool cities’ son medianas en cuanto a tamaño pero grandes en actividad cultural. Al visitarlas, no hay que dejar de echar un vistazo a sus intensas agendas de propuestas. Junto a importantes festivales, con programaciones sólidas de carácter internacional, conviven otras citas de menor formato a menudo innovadoras, estimulantes y sorprendentes.

Las creaciones artísticas no sólo se quedan en galerías y museos, sino que buscan nuestra mirada al aire libre

Sí, la cultura se disfruta aquí en minúsculas y en mayúsculas. En grandes equipamientos, como el Centro Botín, flamante espacio artístico que busca despertar la actitud creadora en Santander. O el potente conjunto de tres Museos Científicos Coruñeses mc2. O, en Avilés, el Centro Niemeyer. O en San Sebastián (Capital Europea de la Cultura 2106), el palacio Kursaal, sede de su Festival Internacional de Cine. O Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura en Gijón, un espacio colosal con programaciones incesantes. Las manifestaciones de primer nivel conviven con otras propuestas creativas, en salas públicas y privadas, para todos los gustos.

La oferta es plural y contenta tanto al fan del terror o el cómic como a quien adora la música independiente o el cine de nuevos directores.

El arte plástico sale de la feria ArteSantander, de las galerías y museos para buscar nuestra mirada desde la misma calle, en forma de numerosas esculturas al aire libre. Eduardo Chillida nos abraza en Gijón, que se autoproclama “distrito creativo”, con ‘El elogio el horizonte’ y vuelve a acariciarnos en su San Sebastián natal con otro lugar imprescindible, ‘El peine del viento’.

“Romper los esquemas” es uno de los objetivos de Art Street Palacio Valdés, una iniciativa singular que promueven en Avilés artistas plásticos, con la colaboración de creadores de otras disciplinas, comerciantes y vecinos. Organizan exposiciones atípicas en varios locales o por la calle, montan acciones de ‘bookcrossing’ y actividades culturales de lo más variado.

Algo se mueve en las ‘cool cities’, donde nunca deja de sonar la música, la clásica, el jazz y toda la actual. En festivales de referencia o aquí y allá, con música en vivo que apreciar desde la proximidad de los pequeños locales. _

Viajes en el tiempo.

_ Cuando la arquitectura nos traslada a las sensibilidades de otros siglos o a las incógnitas del actual _

L

a arquitectura no es un arte sólo para contemplar. Nos envuelve y organiza espacios en los que podemos entrar y movernos, ocupar y vivirlos. Construcciones singulares y otras no tan llamativas nos ayudan quizás a conocernos y a comprender la personalidad de cada ciudad.

Los edificios tienen también algo de máquinas del tiempo con capacidad para trasladarnos a las necesidades, preocupaciones y sensibilidades de épocas pasadas. En las ‘cool cities’, la arquitectura nos puede llevar hasta el siglo XII entre las sólidas piedras de iglesias románicas y cascos históricos como el de Avilés.

Las construcciones y nuestra imaginación nos permiten viajar a aquellos primeros años del siglo XX, la ‘belle epoque’. Así lo sentimos junto a la elegante pareja que desde hace más de cien años forman el hotel María Cristina y el teatro Victoria Eugenia en San Sebastián. Primero esa ciudad y a continuación Santander fueron entonces lugar de veraneo para la corte española y el cosmopolita mundo que la acompañaba. No cuesta imaginarlo en el palacio de la Magdalena, cuyo arquitecto Javier González de Riancho dejó otro edificio característico en Santander, el Hotel Real.

Los diseños ideados por los arquitectos nos pueden hacer abrir la boca, como ante la monumentalidad del conjunto que desde mediados del XXI fue la Universidad Laboral de Gijón, reconvertido ahora en Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura”. O sorprendernos con la ola de cristal que el británico Nicholas Grimshaw ideó para la sede de la Fundación Abanca en A Coruña. Sí, por las ‘cool cities’ conviene pasear con los ojos bien abiertos. _

… “La piedra logra la transición del pasado al futuro, es lo que hace al edificio perenne, único y con identidad”, ARATA ISOZAKI. Para levantar la Domus en A Coruña, el japonés utilizó 11.000 toneladas de granito y 6.600 piezas de pizarra.

… “El arquitecto contribuye a que una ciudad se mantenga viva”.

El navarro RAFAEL MONEO dio vida a San Sebastián con sus cubos traslúcidos del Kursaal, pero los iniciados saben que su joya escondida es la iglesia de Iesu.

Las ‘cool cities’ nos permiten adentrarnos en la obra de algunos de los grandes arquitectos de nuestro tiempo, los que han dicho…

… “Lo que me atrae es la curva libre y sensual”, ha afirmado el brasileño OSCAR NIEMEYER. Y sin duda lo demuestra en su única creación en España, que lleva su nombre, el Centro Niemeyer (Avilés).

… “La luz natural contribuye a la experiencia mística que surge al contemplar obras de arte”. Palabras del italiano RENZO PIANO sobre su diseño del Centro Botín en Santander.

… “Todas las localidades deben ser de la misma categoría. No es admisible un anfiteatro altísimo y alejado de la escena para espectadores de segunda categoría”.

Esto no lo dijo un arquitecto actual sino, allá por 1948, LUIS MOYA BLANCO, creador del edificio Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura, en Gijón.

Los sabores de la tentación. _

Cuando la pregunta de cómo y dónde comeremos hoy tiene muchas respuestas… y todas igualmente irresistibles _

E

n las ‘cool cities’ se come mucho y bien. En restaurantes tradicionales y en ‘templos’ de la cocina de autor, en comedores reconocidos y en otros por descubrir. La gastronomía ocupa el centro de la vida social. Y hasta hay un centro universitario de alta cocina, el Basque Culinary Center de San Sebastián, en el que podemos degustar y comentar lo que sus estudiantes guisan.

Descubrir San Sebastián, Santander, Gijón, Avilés y A Coruña es sucumbir a sus encantos culinarios. En mesa y mantel o de modo informal y en pequeñas dosis. Los pinchos o tapas, de los más tradicionales a los más sofisticados, permiten combinar el placer gastronómico con el ambiente ciudadano. En San Sebastián reclaman la paternidad de su ‘boom’ con barras llenas de tentadores pinchos en la Parte Vieja y el barrio de Gros. Pero los hay hasta en A Coruña, donde el concurso Picadillo premia la elaboración de tapas.

Estamos en tierras que se caracterizan por sus productos de primera calidad, del campo y, por supuesto, del mar. Degustar marisco en A Coruña es una experiencia difícil de olvidar, tanto como paladear pescado recién llegado al puerto y preparado sencillamente a la brasa. Quizás en la calle Tetuán o en el Barrio Pesquero de Santander. O, con el paquete ‘Pescado de la Rula de Avilés’, visitando la lonja, donde adquiriremos el pescado que nos prepararán en el restaurante que elijamos. Más fresco imposible.

Otra experiencia recomendable es convertirnos en catadores de la bebida típica de Asturias en la Ruta de la Sidra de Gijón. Además de la sidra, conviene probar dos vinos blancos con Denominación de Origen, el Ribeiro de Galicia y el Txakoli de Getaria (Gipuzkoa). ¿Queda hambre? De postre, podemos conocer la tradición chocolatera de A Coruña, seguir las rutas del ‘Gijón Goloso’, degustar la típica quesada pasiega en Santander o acudir a Sweet Llambión, el salón de la pastelería de Avilés. _

n la España Verde, la naturaleza no es algo al margen, separado, sino integrado en la vida y en la propia trama de las ciudades. Un ejemplo: Gijón, con cuatro playas urbanas, otras seis en su entorno, 52 parques y 7 jardines. Como joya, su Jardín Botánico Atlántico, 15 hectáreas en las que pasear entre 2.000 especies vegetales diferentes. Su modelo turístico sostenible han hecho de ella la segunda ciudad del mundo certificada como destino ‘Biosphere’.

ten sentir la tranquilidad de la naturaleza a dos pasos de los cascos urbanos. Por ejemplo, en los tres pequeños montes que rodean a San Sebastián o en sus magníficos parques (Cristina-Enea, Aiete) que las guías turísticas apenas mencionan.

El litoral de Avilés es zona de dunas, que apreciaremos en la extensa playa del Sablón o en el monumento natural de las Dunas del Espartal. Pero siempre volveremos a su pulmón verde, el imponente Parque Ferrera, escenario para el ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’ de Woody Allen… o para nuestras propias películas. _

Aislados en hermosos parajes al borde del mar, rodeados de una atmósfera de romanticismo y aventura, los faros son lugares mágicos en los que respirar al aire libre.

FARO DE CABO MAYOR: Preside con rotundidad la entrada a la bahía de Santander. Tras un paseo por su senda, recuperemos fuerzas con una ración de ‘rabas’ (calamares fritos).

FARO DE LA ISLA SANTA CLARA (San Sebastián): En mitad de la bahía de La Concha, la pequeña isla, sólo accesible en barca, es un oasis de paz y naturaleza iluminado por un faro. ≤

FARO DE AVILÉS: En la margen derecha de la Ría, su emplazamiento es una espectacular atalaya.

TORRE DE HÉRCULES (A Coruña): Los romanos lo pusieron en marcha y, veinte siglos más tarde, podemos contemplar su haz de luz tumbados en la playa de las Lapas.

os aficionados a practicar deporte están de enhorabuena. En las ‘cool cities’ no faltan opciones para activarse.

Pueden unirse a los ciudadanos locales en la práctica de las modalidades náuticas: natación, vela, wind-surf, piragüismo, ‘Stand Up Paddle’, submarinismo,… y, por supuesto, el surf. Muchas playas son idóneas para refrescarse cabalgando olas sobre tablas. ¿Y si preferimos golf o equitación?

También hay instalaciones. Aunque también baste con caminar, hacer jogging o pedalear en bicicleta para sentirnos mejor, al tiempo que conocemos las ciudades desde otro punto de vista.

Los visitantes más perezosos también están de enhorabuena, que se encuentran en tierra de balnearios.

Cuidar el cuerpo con circuitos termales y tratamientos de salud, belleza y bienestar es un lujo al alcance de la mano. Cosmopolitan and ‘cool’ It may be due to its proximity to the French border. Or because of its past as a place where royalty and the “beautiful people” idly spent their summers playing roulette. It may be for the citizens from all over the world who choose to enjoy its quality of life for a few days. Or for the international outlook of the local people. It may be for all these reasons that Donostia/San Sebastián is the most cosmopolitan of the Basque cities.

Cosmopolitanism, however, is not the only secret of a capital that, while being small in size, built on a human scale, boasts the cultural offering of a large city. Green Spain’s ‘cool cities’ are to be experienced on foot, without any pre-established plan, sharing their urban areas with the residents, letting your footsteps lead you freely through the maze of streets as the mood takes you, your mind open to the great deal these human-scaled cities have to offer. A surprise awaits you around each and every corner.

You have to walk, wander, keep your eyes peeled, peer and explore. Leisurely wandering the streets, you can come across... the largest collection of glazed façades in the world. This is what you can find on Avenida de la Marina in A Coruña, which is known as the ‘City of Glass’ for a reason. The endless glazing of its façades reflects all the different types of light throughout the day.

You can wander through solitary streets with an ancient air, capable of transporting you to another age. Without leaving the old quarter, you emerge all of a sudden into the lively contemporary hustle and bustle of areas dotted with bars and restaurants where getting your strength back is a veritable pleasure.

On the way, you can come across an establishment selling artisanal wares or a shop selling the latest designs… or get carried away by the scents and colours of traditional food markets, such as La Esperanza Market, in Santander.

You will hear the sound of your footsteps on the pavement, perhaps when strolling under the protection of arcades such as those in Galiana Street in Avilés, until you decide to stop and sit in a square where it would be nice to stay forever. You are sure to find just the one for you.

Tailored to pedestrians, the squares, streets and lanes of the old quarters exert a strong influence, but you also hear the call of the sea in northern Spain’s ‘cool cities’. There are seaside promenades that you will never tire of walking, because they are always different. They change with the time of day, the seasons, the weather and even your mood. If you like walking, seven kilometres of seaside promenade await you in San Sebastián, without having to cross a road or pull your gaze away from the horizon.

The promenade bordering San Lorenzo Beach, Gijón’s central axis and meeting place, is dotted with numbers that identify the sixteen sets of steps leading down to the beach. Black, white, green, red The wide palette of colours of northern Spain’s ‘cool cities’ tends toward blues, but here we want to highlight four less evident colours.

Black. Or noir, like a good crime novel. Or like Gijón’s Semana Negra (Noir Week), which, since its inception in 1988, has brought together fans of crime fiction at its get-togethers, tributes, panel discussions and fiestas.

White. Just like the rounded shapes of the Niemeyer Centre, which promotes cultural creation from Avilés. A dream that began when the Brazilian architect sketched its outlines on a blank sheet of paper.

VERDANT green. Like the parks and hills of San Sebastián, where British-style picnics are organized, livened up by gentle, select music.

“Please tread on the grass!” is the slogan of Musika Parkean.

COPPER green. The characteristic colour of the façade of the Cantabria Festival Centre, a reference venue for classical music which hosts events such as the International Festival of Santander and the Paloma O’Shea Piano Competition.

Red. Like the dress of “The Barefoot Girl”, who Pablo Picasso painted in A Coruña. A tour allows you to follow in his footsteps through the city where he lived as a child and where he first took up his paintbrushes.

‘Cool cities’ are medium in size, but large in terms of cultural activities.

When visiting them, you simply have to check out their broad range of cultural offerings. Festivals with well-established programmes of an international scope coexist alongside other events on a smaller scale that are often innovative, exciting and surprising.

Yes… culture is enjoyed here in both small and capital letters. In large facilities, such as the Botín Center, a brand new art venue that seeks to awaken creative sensibility in Santander. Or the commanding collection of three Science Museums in A Coruña, known as “mc2” (Museos Científicos Coruñeses). Or the Niemeyer Centre in Avilés. Or the Kursaal Convention Centre, home to the International Film Festival, in San Sebastián (European Capital of Culture 2016). Or the Laboral City of Culture in Gijón, a colossal site with a ceaseless programme of events. Leading manifestations of culture coexist alongside other creative proposals in public and private venues for every taste. The offering is wide-ranging, to the delight of horror film fans or comic lovers as well as followers of indie music and films by new directors.

Art steps out of the ArteSantander fair, galleries and museums to captivate the viewer’s attention right in the street, in the form of numerous outdoor sculptures. Eduardo Chillida embraces you with his “Elogy of the Horizon” in Gijón –which has proclaimed itself a “creative district”– and caresses you once again in his native San Sebastián with another essential spot, “The Wind’s Comb”.

“Thinking Outside the Box” is one of the goals of Art Street Palacio Valdés.

This unique initiative aims to promote art in Avilés in collaboration with artists from other disciplines, shopkeepers and residents who organize atypical exhibitions in various establishments or in the street as well as setting up bookcrossing events and a wide variety of other cultural activities.

Something is on the move in our ‘cool cities’, where music never ceases to be heard… classical, jazz and all the latest sounds. In premier festivals or live music here and there to be appreciated in the immediacy of small, intimate venues.

Buildings and your imagination enable you to travel back to the early 20th century, the ‘belle époque’. That is how you will feel in the environs of the fashionable couple that the Maria Cristina Hotel has formed with the Victoria Eugenia Theatre for over a hundred years in San Sebastián. Both this city, first, and then Santander were summer resorts for the Spanish court and the cosmopolitan world that accompanied it. This period is easily evoked in La Magdalena Palace, whose architect, Javier González de Riancho, left another characteristic building in Santander, the Hotel Real.

The designs conceived by architects can make you gape in admiration, such as when standing before the monumental ensemble which from the mid-20th century was Gijón’s Universidad Laboral, now transformed into Laboral City of Culture. Or surprise you with the glass wave conceived by British architect Nicholas Grimshaw for the Abanca Foundation headquarters in A Coruña.

Yes, you should keep your eyes wide open when strolling around Green Spain’s ‘cool cities’. _

Architecture is not only an art to behold.

It envelops us and brings order to an area, allowing us to enter it and move around, occupy it and experience it.

Unique buildings –and others not so striking– perhaps help us to understand one another and the personality of each city.

Buildings are also in some way time machines, capable of transporting you back to the needs, concerns and sensitivities of the past. In our ‘cool cities’, architecture can take you back to the 12th century

Our ‘cool cities’ allow you to explore the work of some of the great architects of our time, those who have said... ... “Stone manages the transition from past to future, it is what makes the building perennial and unique, conferring it an identity”, ARATA ISOZAKI. The Japanese architect used 11,000 tons of granite and 6,600 pieces of slate to raise the Domus in A Coruña. ... “What attracts me is the free and sensual curve,” stated the Brazilian architect OSCAR NIEMEYER. He has certainly demonstrated this in his only creation in Spain, one which bears his name, the Niemeyer Centre (Avilés). ... “The architect helps a city stay alive”.

Navarran architect RAFAEL MONEO gave new life to San Sebastián with the translucent cubes of the Kursaal, but those in the know are aware that its hidden gem is actually the Church of Iesu. ... “Natural light contributes to the mystical experience that wells up within when contemplating works of art.” Words by Italian architect RENZO PIANO on his design of the Botín Center in Santander. ... “All the seats must be equally worthy. A really high upper circle far from the stage for second-class spectators is just not admissible”. These are not the words of a contemporary architect, but those spoken back in 1948 by MOYA LUIS BLANCO, creator of the Laboral City of Culture building in Gijón.

Tower of Hercules (A Coruña): The Romans first raised this lighthouse, whose beam of light can still be seen twenty centuries later on Las Lapas Beach.

Avilés Lighthouse: On the estuary’s right bank, it stands on a spectacular vantage point.

Cape Torres Lighthouse (Gijón): Forming part of Campa Torres Archaeological and Nature Park, it serves as an observatory for watching the seabirds to be found in the surroundings.

Cape Mayor Lighthouse It commandingly presides over the entrance to Santander Bay. After a walk along its footpath, you can get your strength back with a serving of ‘rabas’ (fried calamari).

Isle of Santa Clara Lighthouse (San Sebastián): In the middle of La Concha Bay and consequently accessible only by boat, the islet is an oasis of peace and nature illuminated by its lighthouse. ≤

In Green Spain, nature is not something apart and separate, but forms part of the life and the very fabric of its cities. For example: Gijón, with four beaches in the town itself, six others in its surroundings, 52 parks and 7 gardens. In our ‘cool cities’, the food is both good and plentiful. In traditional restaurants and the ‘temples’ of signature cuisine, in well-known eateries and in others yet to be discovered. Gastronomy is the hub of social life. There’s even a haute cuisine university centre, the Basque Culinary Center, in San Sebastián, where you can taste and discuss what the students cook.

To discover San Sebastián, Santander, Gijón, Avilés and A Corunna is to succumb to their culinary charms. In a formal restaurant or a more relaxed setting, as well as in small tidbits. Pinchos and tapas, ranging from the most traditional to the most sophisticated, allow you to combine gastronomic pleasure with a popular ambiance. San Sebastián lays claim to ‘fathering’ the boom in finger food with its bars replete with appetizing pinchos in its old quarter and the district of Gros.

But tapas can also be found in A Coruña, where the Picadillo competition awards prizes for the creations made there.

These are lands characterized by quality products, country produce and, of course, seafood. To taste shellfish in A Coruña is an unforgettable experience, as is relishing fish that has just arrived in port and is simply grilled. Perhaps in Tetuán Street or Santander’s fishing quarter.

Or, with the ‘Avilés Fish Market’ package deal, visiting the fish market where you can purchase the fish that they will then prepare for you in the restaurant of your choice. You won’t find anything fresher.

Another appetizing experience is to become a taster of Asturias’ traditional brew on the Cider Trail in Gijón. Besides cider, you should also try two white wines that boast their own Designation of Origin, Ribeiro de Galicia and Txakoli de Getaria (Gipuzkoa).

Still hungry? For dessert, why not delight in A Coruña’s chocolate tradition, follow the ‘Sweet-toothed Gijón’ routes, taste the typical quesada pasiega cheesecake in Santander or pay a visit to Sweet Llambión, Avilés’ cake and pastry salon.

Paths surrounded by greenery allow you to experience the peace and quiet of nature just a stone’s throw from any of the city centres. For instance, on the three small mountains surrounding San Sebastián or in its magnificent parks (Cristina-Enea, Aiete), which the guidebooks barely mention.

The coastline of Avilés is dotted with dunes, which you can enjoy on lengthy Sablón Beach or at the natural monument of El Espartal Dunes. Although you will always return to its ‘green lung’, imposing Ferrera Park, one of the settings for Woody Allen’s ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’... or for a film of your own making! _

Pampering your body.

When the doubt lies between practising sports yourself or letting others

take care of your body Sports lovers are in luck. There is no lack of options to get moving in our ‘cool cities’.

You can join the local residents in the practice of nautical activities: swimming, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, standup paddle boarding, diving and, of course, surfing. Many beaches are ideal for cooling off while riding the waves on a board.

And if you prefer golf or horse riding, there are also facilities. Although you only need to go walking, jogging or cycling to feel better, while getting to know the city from another perspective.

Less energetic visitors are also in luck, as they are in the land of spas. La Perla del Océano was opened back in 1912 right on La Concha Beach (San Sebastián). The spa is still there, though now under the name of La Perla Talaso-Sport, maintaining the tradition of using seawater for physical toning and relaxation, but now applying new technologies.

Pampering your body in spas with health, beauty and wellness treatments is an accessible luxury. In A Coruña, Termaria Casa de Agua offers 43 different types of massages and treatments, in addition to Europe’s largest active seawater pool.

Situated on the seaside promenade in the same city, the Metropolitan La Solana spa and fitness centre occupies some 28,000 square metres.
