Multi Award Winning

HE was a man well-known for his iconic dune buggy. For 30 years, Noosa’s Ron “Yum Yum” Broughton travelled the sands of Teewah Beach delivering food to the Noosa North Shore in ‘The Buggy’.

Daughter Vicki Baker said it all started in the late 1970s when Ron had a dream of driving the beach to provide a food service to the sand miners and tourists.

“He found a VW Beetle and two VW campervan pop tops, and with the help of Howard Larsen and OZ East, The Buggy was born.

“Dad was big on promoting all the small businesses around Noosa and Tewantin. So he decided to take Mum and The Buggy on a promotional tour from Darwin to Toowoomba and Sydney, giving away Noosa holidays.

“He had sold promotional spaces on the buggy and away they went putting Noosa on the map.

“The Shopping Wheel was created for the compendiums in accommodation, the Noosa Treasure Trove Map for beachgoers and tourists to find what they were looking for while on holiday, the Yummy Tide Charts were created weekly by Noosa Graphica for 30 years, and of course Dad had his Friday 4SS beach report promoting Yummy Promotions.”

Ron was also an inventor.

“He developed the drinking chair in the 1960s, winning a New Zealand furniture exhibition award. He then reinvented the drinking chair in the 1980s Noosa style.”

Ron was also commissioned to upholster the seating for the Opera

House opening in the early 1970s.

Vicki said her dad was also a gentleman and protector.

“Dad had a great sense of responsibility and love for his family. He was always the provider and made sure his family was safe and secure with the help of Mum.

“The Eliza Fraser Story was important to him and for the area and he created leatherwork to tell the story.

“One of the most important things to Dad was the Noosa River and the Noosa Dreamtime.

“This is where Mum is and this is where Dad will meet her.”

Ron passed away on 30 June. He had two daughters, Vicki and Tracey Tyrie; two grandkids; and four great-grandchildren.
