Cooran State School student Romany Heaton emerges victorious in the Premier’s Coding Challenge.

Romany racks up second win for the record books

A COORAN State School student has won a prestigious award - again. Romany Heaton, 12, won the Year 5-6 Open Premier’s Coding Challenge for 2021. She won the same challenge in 2020. Romany’s Mum, Kym, told the Cooroy Rag that she won it last year for building an app for kids to prevent cyber bullying, and this year she won for building an app for cyber safety online. “Her apps will be developed further and used as part of a Queensland Education Department initiative to help other children. “She has received a robot on both occasions, and is turning the two robots into a super bot (one entity). “Out of all the private and state schools around Queensland, Cooran State School has had a finalist for the last four years. “But Romany is the only winner and we think the only one to win twice in the history of the awards.”

The hard work pays off for teacher Rebcca Tierney and talented students, admiring the new work.

Students create stunning new mural

After returning from maternity leave in Semester 2020, Noosa District State High School Pomona campus teacher Rebecca Tierney, together with her ART082C and ART072I students and the Art Club, have created a new mural. Mrs Tierney and her art students undertook the mammoth task during lunch breaks and some class time to create a mural to cover a graffitied wall near the Pomona tuckshop. The mural has been designed in consultation with the school’s Indigenous Liaison Officer Kajal Charlton to ensure that it is culturally significant to the area. The talent in this school community is absolutely outstanding.
