Playground put to first flood test BY ALEX PURCELL WHEN floodwaters inundated Cooroy’s almost-finished multi-million dollar playground last week, the site flooded as “modelled and predicted”. Hundreds of millimetres of rain was dumped on Cooroy, submerging equipment and infrastructure at the Lower Mill site. Noosa Council Director of Infrastructure Services Larry Sengstock said given the extent of the rainfall, the site “flooded as modelled and predicted” with much of the floodwaters receding once the heavy rain eased. “The site drains very quickly as the creek recedes and initial assessments indicate that this is exactly what occurred this time,” he said. A flood assessment prepared for Noosa Council in 2019 for the Hinterland Adventure Playground found Cooroy Creek flooding is the “dominant source of flooding at the Lower Mill site” and noted Cooroy Creek has a “relatively short response time, meaning that flooding can occur without much warning”. Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President Chris Bell said the speed at which floodwaters from Cooroy Creek rose was so fast they had to evacuate caravans from the RV Stopover on the other side of the creek from the Lower Mill site. “We had to move all the vans to the sports complex during the night.” Evacuated RV Stop Over visitors Pete and Audrey Haynes have thanked emergency services and the Cooroy community for their assistance. “Thank you to the emergency services, in particular a young man who walked into the water to show us the depth as the road was covered, that came and evacuated us from the Cooroy

RV park. “Also thank you to the Cooroy community for allowing us to stay at the sports complex and Chris, who came out to check how everyone was. "What a great town. We’ll definitely be back.” Cooroy Hire Service owner Max Arbuthnot said in the 20 years he has had his shop on Maple St, he has witnessed the Lower Mill site underwater two to three times. At a Special Meeting in January 2021 to discuss plans for the playground, the view of Council’s

consulting hydraulic engineer that “elimination of the flood hazard at the site” was not possible, was addressed. Therefore, Council developed a Hinterland Playground Flood Risk Assessment and Emergency Management Plan (FRAEMP), in the event of a flood when the park opens. This includes an automatic audible and visual flood warning system to alert visitors to evacuate the site as soon as floodwaters begin to inundate the playground.

Cooroy Car Parts owner Mouette van Diggelen said it was sad this has happened, just weeks out from the playground officially opening. “They were only weeks away from finishing and now this, it’s pretty sad. “Two bobcats are underwater and apparently things have been washed away. "Who knows what the damage is?” At the time of printing, Mr Sengstock said it was too early to deter-

mine the extent of the damage or whether the flooding would delay the official opening. “Our staff and contractors will make those assessments once this rain event is finished.” With the $4.1 million Adventure Playground still under construction, Mr Sengstock said it was hoped the damage from the flood would be limited. Construction of the Hinterland Adventure Playground began in April 2021 and should be completed by the end of March 2022.

IN BRIEF

Nutworks cracks on with Cooroy expansion THINGS are going nuts in Cooroy – in a good way. Expanding to meet increasing domestic and global demand, Yandina-based Nutworks has opened a new processing facility in Cooroy. The Cooroy facility also provides a new product for Nutworks under the label of the Fresh Macadamia Company, namely a unique roasted-in-shell macadamia with a special cut making them easy to hand crack. The whole macadamias are dried in their shell, precut and then oven roasted, or soaked in a sea salt brine and then oven roasted for a salted version. A unique key to open the shells is included in every pack. Nutworks CEO Wayne Gersbach said the new Cooroy operation greatly increased processing capacity and opened up new employment opportunities in the area. The goal is to increase annual processing to 5000 tonnes within the next five years, by utilising the latest

technology while still retaining close personal relationships with suppliers. The new acquisition allows for up to one tonne of macadamias an hour to be roasted, a massive increase in capability from the current 250kg per hour at Yandina. “Increasing our processing capacity means we can take more product from growers, which is important in an industry that is expanding, with many young trees set to increase production in the coming years,” Mr Gersbach said. “That also ultimately means increases in jobs and an overall benefit to the industry whilst at the same time providing consumers with more variety

and continually improving products.” Approximately 80 macadamia farmers around Queensland supply nuts to Nutworks and many were treated to a tour of the new facility, and were impressed with what they saw. Looking to diversify, Childers farmers, Norm and Donna Anderson, have been supplying macadamias to Nutworks for six years. “We’ve been with Nutworks since we started growing. This opportunity has come along at a good time and we like the plan for Nutworks to grow while keeping the personal touch, which has always been great,” Donna said. Candy Johnson, who

owns macadamia farms at Downsfield and Tandur, said the Cooroy facility gave their company security to go forward. “I love the cut nut product. It is much tastier than the traditional roasted nut,” she said. The Yandina facility will continue to run as a retail outlet as well as for production associated with roasting, chocolate coating and the confectionery line of products. Established in 1993, Nutworks is internationally recognised for its commitment to quality and innovation in its range of macadamia products. Chamber calls for CCTV support BY ALEX PURCELL WITH the completion of Cooroy’s multi-million dollar playground just around the corner, the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce is planning to extend the town’s CCTV coverage to the playground. Several years ago, the Chamber, courtesy of a Federal Government grant, installed a CCTV network throughout the Cooroy CBD of 31 strategically placed cameras, including three with automatic number plate recognition. Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President Chris Bell said the Chamber recently applied for a further grant to install six additional cameras in the playground, that would connect with the existing network. “Unfortunately, the Chamber has been advised that we were unsuccessful. “It seems that we could well be victims of our own success as there are other communities with no CCTV network whatsoever, that are considered to be more in need than we are. “In other words, they want what Cooroy already has, and who can blame them?”

Despite missing out on the grant money, Chris said the Chamber was fully committed to extending the coverage to the new playground and its surrounds. “The existing cameras across Cooroy do a fabulous job at keeping undesirables out of our town. “It is, therefore, our intention to do whatever we can to continue this with new cameras providing coverage for children and families who use the amazing playground. “The new cameras will help keep everyone who uses the attraction safe. It is as simple as that.” Cooroy Police said they were supportive of the initiative and Noosa Council is working with the Chamber to enable the installation of the new CCTV cameras. “Police support the initiative by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce to fund cameras that are linked to the current system in order to deter criminal damage and predatory behaviour,” said Cooroy Police Sergeant Mal Scott. Acting Noosa Council CEO Larry Sengstock said Council was working col-

nature-based playground to the community in late March in time for the school holidays,“ he said. The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce is now calling on local businesses that might be interested in sponsoring these state-of-the-art

cameras. “The cameras we are planning to install will not only be activated after hours by the presence of intruders but as a deterrent, a warning light will activate. The system will also have the ability to play a pre-recorded ‘we are watching you' style of message," Mr Bell said. “There is no doubt that these cameras will help keep our town and its infrastructure safe”. The Chamber is hoping to secure sponsors from local businesses for each of the six cameras to be installed. “Since putting the idea out there at the Cooroy Community Forum, which was hosted last year by the Bendigo Bank at the Memorial Hall, we have already had two businesses approach us who are keen to get involved in the absence of the grant funding. “That time is now. "In total, the installation is going to cost the Chamber well in excess of $20,000.” Any local businesses that would like to sponsor a camera for the new playground CCTV system can contact Chris Bell on 0412 043 843.

Beware of the bitumen bandits COOROY Police are warning people living on rural properties in the Noosa Hinterland areas of Cooroy, Pomona, Eumundi and Kenilworth to be aware of unscrupulous bitumen layers who are giving out on-thespot quotations and putting pressure on vulnerable people to commit to work that either is not commenced, or commenced and completed to a very poor standard. Recent letter box drops, and people observed taking photographs of rural properties, have been reported to police. Officer in Charge at Cooroy Police, Sergeant Mal Scott, urged caution. “Please thoroughly check the credentials of any persons purporting to be licensed bitumen layers and do not hand over any money prior to all work being completed. Preferably, seek the advice of a trusted friend or professional person knowledgeable in this area before engaging these people for driveway or other work. “Please report any suspicious activities to the Cooroy, Pomona or Eumundi Police or via Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.”

It's time to tool up, ladies A SkillWomen workshop to be held in Pomona this month offers a great opportunity for women of all ages to master the use of hand tools and basic power tools. The Pomona & District Community House is hosting the free workshop on Saturday, March 26, with help from Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen (SALT). The workshop will provide a unique opportunity to be taught by a team of skilled tradeswomen who are offering one-on-one guidance. All materials are provided. Participants will build a timber cutlery caddy to take home, where it can be displayed with pride. During the half-day workshop, trainers will show how to use measuring tools, cordless drills, hand saws,

hammers, jig saws, drop saws and different fixings. The SkillWomen workshop has already been delivered to girls and women in nearly 400 schools and communities across Australia. In 2014, SALT created the SALT of the EARTH volunteer initiative and has now sent out seven teams of female tradies to assist farmers in drought-affected areas of NSW and Queensland. “We absolutely love what we do,” said SALT President Fi Shewring, “whether it’s presenting these workshops or volunteering out west.” “We meet so many amazing people. "The oldest participant in a workshop so far is a 96-year-old whom we met in Orange, NSW.” “We just love it when

someone challenges the preconceptions of what is possible.” The workshop begins with essential safety talks and procedures, after which participants will be allocated a tradeswoman to assist in their project. Bookings are essential as places are limited, so early registration is recommended. The free workshop (donations are welcome) will run from 10am-2.30pm at Pomona Campus, Noosa District State High School, Summit Rd, Pomona. To register, phone 5485 2427, and you will be given full details about what to wear and what to bring, which should include your lunch as there are no food outlets nearby.

A NEW podcast is aiming to help parents increase the online safety of their children. Parenting in Cyberspace is a podcast that provides resources and information for parents or carers dealing with issues such as cyberbullying. An initiative of the registered charity and public company ‘yourtown’, the podcast will feature guests such as recording artist Vanessa Amorosi, Kids Helpline counsellors, and young people with lived experience involving mental ill-health and recovery. Launched by yourtown’s service Parentline on the recent Safer Internet Day, Parenting in Cyberspace highlights the availability of the free Kids Helpline phone service to young people aged 5 to 25. Latest data from Kids Helpline reports 3871 contacts from children and young people about bullying

last year, with 1164 of those specifically related to cyberbullying. Additionally, 3991 young people contacted Kids Helpline about a cyber or online safety issue. yourtown CEO Tracy Adams said one in five young people experienced cyberbullying, and research showed the need to support parents and carers seeking to increase their knowledge about online safety. “This podcast series has been produced through

funding provided by the Queensland Government in response to the recommendations of the Premier’s cyberbullying taskforce,” Ms Adams said. “We know that children and young people really want to be able to go to their caregivers about cyberbullying, their online wellbeing and safety, but they’re afraid of the reaction they may receive in doing so. “We want to encourage parents or carers to feel confident when talking to their child about cyberbullying. We want to give them a resource that helps break down some of those common communication barriers and helps them to empower and support their children.” Visit the Parentline website (parentline.com.au) for easy access to the podcast and counselling services, or call through to Parentline on 1300 301 300.

Calls to change laws as circus promo falls flat BY ALEX PURCELL

CALLS are being made for the revision of a local law after The Great Moscow Circus was forced to take down its inflatable clowns because they didn’t comply with Noosa Council’s endorsed advertising signage policy, which was ratified by the previous council. Several inflatable 3D clowns were removed from private properties across the Noosa Shire, causing uproar in the community. The Great Moscow Circus marketing manager Mark Edgley told the Cooroy Rag that the bylaw definitely needed to be looked at. “With the local law in place for outdoor advertising, I would understand if our clowns were on Council land. But they are on private properties," Mr Edgley said. “I’d understand if they were on people’s properties without their approval, but the people have approved them and they pay their rates and taxes.” Under the local law, any type of signage erected within the Noosa Shire without a permit is also prohibited signage. This includes signs on Council land or private property. The local law also covers event signage, specifying that event signage must not exceed six signs and must not exceed 900mm x 600 mm in size. Development Assessment Manager Kerri Coyle said the local law on advertising signage was introduced in February 2020, with the purpose to preserve the look and feel of Noosa’s unique environment. “We received a number of complaints about the inflatable signage and under the local law, inflatable and third-party signs (signs for

someone else's business/ event on your property) are prohibited in Noosa,” she said. Mr Edgley said nine out of 10 people loved the clowns. “I understand that certain things go on and people push boundaries, and that upsets people, but we don’t do that. We make sure advertising clowns are neat and clean and 99 per cent of the community support us.” Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart said she first became aware there was an issue with the clowns when she was contacted by a person in whose yard a clown was located. “I requested information from staff regarding why they were being removed and it was then that I was advised it was because they didn’t comply with the Advertising Signage Policy endorsed in February 2020 by the previous council. “I was so concerned and with hands effectively tied, I called for a round table meeting with councillors and the current CEO, outlining my concerns in light of ‘The Great Moscow Fiasco’.

“This policy needs to be looked at and there is an opportunity for this council to revisit certain aspects of the signage policy in the future.” Mr Edgley said this was the first time The Great Moscow Circus had visited Noosa in over 10 years. “We pay a good fee to come here and bring money to the community. To be told that we can’t advertise, well then, what’s the point? “These clowns are our main form of advertising and as soon as we put them up, ticket sales go up. When we pull them down, people think we’ve left town. “It’s disappointing. This will hurt our business and other businesses. Why should that happen when we're not hurting anyone? “We’ve been in lockdown for eight months, with the art industry having been hit hard. We respect local laws but would appreciate some government and local authority support.” The famous animal-free circus is in Noosa at the Noosa Pirates Complex in Tewantin until Sunday, March 6.

QUT Architecture students will take a fresh look at Pomona on March 12.

Pomona in the spotlight BY BRIAN O'CONNOR ONCE a year, the people of Pomona have an opportunity to re-imagine how their town could look, when architectural students from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) arrive to inquire about what characteristics make the place special. More than 100 students will be in Pomona on Saturday, March 12 to ask residents about how they live, play and generally appreciate the town – and to examine what could work better. Groups of students are then assigned a major building to redesign, based on the feedback from their "clients". In past years, the locations examined have included The Majestic Theatre, the Noosa Shire Museum and the pavilion at the showgrounds. Student assignments must be ready mid-year and students are marked on their interpretation and design in keeping with Pomona’s ‘tin and timber’ colonial streetscapes. This is the ninth year that the students have made this annual pilgrimage as part of their studies. This association began when townsfolk were dissatisfied with the austere industrial design of the new

fire station in Reserve St. As a result, the help of the QUT architectural students was sought to rework the plans along the lines of what exists today. The determination of people to have a fire station in keeping with the town ‘vibe’ convinced the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) to amend the plans substantially. Today, the citizen-designed fire station takes pride of place in town. The three students involved -- Henri Chau, Josh Pyke and Ololade Adeniyi – subsequently moved successfully into their professional careers. Ololade Adeniyi, the youngest of the students, said she had learned to interact effectively with people of different age groups, genders, occupations and ideals to strike the balance reflected in the final design concepts. “I am very grateful to the Pomona community for giving me my first opportunity to gain hands-on experience in professional architectural practice,” she said. Describing his experience as ‘humbling’, Josh Pyke said that he had discovered that effective consultation was the key to fostering good design solutions. Henri Chau said: “As a university student, real world experience with clients does not come often. This oppor-

tunity allowed me to gain valuable insight, not only into working with clients, but also with government departments.” The nature of the exercise involving the QUT students has meant that locals have not had the opportunity to see the result of their labours. That will change this year when Marissa Lindquist, an award-winning architect and Senior Lecturer at the QUT School of Design, organises a display of past students’ work at the Pomona Memorial Hall on the same day that the students are in town. Posters and mock-up re-interpretations of Pomona’s major buildings will be on show. Following the students’ visit in 2021, four student interpretations of Stan Topper Park were presented to Noosa Shire Councillors and senior staff, ahead of the finalisation of plans to install trailhead facilities associated with the upgrade of Noosa Biosphere Trails between Pomona and Cooran. The Council is discussing additional tree planting in the park with organisers of Pomona Country Markets . This year, the QUT students will focus particularly on the Pomona Showgrounds and the Rural Futures Centre, headquarters for Noosa and District Landcare.

Funding lift boosts fire preparedness for Noosa NOOSA Mayor Clare Stewart has welcomed Federal Government funding of almost $1 million in support of innovative bushfire detection technology being developed at Peregian Beach Digital Hub. The FireTech Laboratory will undertake trials of its fire monitoring and detection technology with the help of a $989,875 grant. Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien said the grant would extend the FireTech Connect commercialisation program for a further two years, delivering a series of critical technology pilot trials for bushfire preparedness, prediction, detection and intelligence at Noosa’s Living Laboratory, which is a set of purpose-built facilities that simulate real-world bushfire environments. “The FireTech Laboratory

is a world-leading project that will help prove the viability of new firefighting and detection technologies, and will benefit not just Wide Bay but communities throughout Australia and internationally by improving our long-term bushfire-fighting capabilities and resilience,” Mr O’Brien said. “Noosa is becoming known internationally as a centre of excellence for developing bushfire-fighting technologies, and this funding will support FireTech and build on the remarkable work being carried out by companies like Helitak and McDermott Aviation. “This is a significant investment by the Coalition Government that is about protecting property, lives, the natural environment and wildlife by preventing destructive bushfires.” Ms Stewart said the significant funding would

put Noosa at the forefront of bushfire preparedness. “The work the Peregian Digital Hub’s FireTech Connect program is groundbreaking and the adoption of innovative solutions could change the way regional Australia prepare, predict and detect future bushfires,” she said. The FireTech Laboratory also received a $1,894,503 grant through the Local Economic Recovery program as part of a joint investment of $36.8 million for locally led bushfire recovery projects, announced in August 2020 by the Australian and Queensland governments. Mr O’Brien said the FireTech project was one of more than 18 projects in Wide Bay among the 524 projects funded under the $390 million Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants program.

Highlighting life lived in harmony HARMONY Week is an opportunity to celebrate multicultural Australia and the successful integration of migrants into our community. Supported by Noosa Council, Pomona Community House is celebrating Harmony Week with two free special events. The first event is on Saturday, March 19 at the Pomona Country Markets, where our region’s rich cultural heritage will be showcased. The second event will be on Friday, March 25 at the Pomona Community House Lawson Shed, where a cultural awareness workshop will be the key event. Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world and annual events that celebrate our diversity help to maintain this achievement. Organisers say Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, and being united by a set of core Australian values such as respect, appreciation, gratitude and empathy. Officially celebrated on March

21 every year to coincide with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Harmony Day promotes the principle that “everyone belongs” and reinforces the importance of inclusiveness to all Australians. Orange is the colour used to symbolise Harmony Day, being chosen to represent social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. The Pomona Country Markets will run from 8am-12.30pm on March 19, and while the markets are in full swing, short segments of music, dance and weaving workshops for children and adults by local legend Kilagi Nielsen have been organised, and a variety of food stalls will serve snacks and meals. The celebrations will be launched by the acappella group LASCCA singing folk tunes in different languages. Then from 9am on the main stage, duo 4Good will perform and at 10am the official Welcome to Country will take place. Other performances will include: Craig Ellis on the Scottish bagpipes; South Sea

Island dancing by Sam Jones and family; singer-songwriter Mish Shell; and Indonesian folk songs with Albertina Banks, who will be joined by Kin-Kin Primary School children; as well as musician Jay Bishoff and friends. The event will finish with Sunshine Coast duo Alan Kelly & Kirsten of the Barley Shakes performing their favourite Irish-Celtic tunes. The second special event will be held the following week on March 25 from 10am-12.30pm at the Pomona Community House Lawson Shed. This interactive cultural awareness workshop will be facilitated by Albertina Banks and will explore amusing cultural differences through the sharing of personal stories, as well as funny video clips to highlight cultural misunderstanding. Kilagi Nielsen of Papua New Guinea ancestry will then demonstrate how to make coconut oil, with this followed by a delicious food tasting experience. (COVID-19 protocols will be followed.) A limit of 20 people for the event means bookings are required – phone 5485 2427.

It may not look like much just now, but this little carriage could become something sweet.

Ice cream shop idea rolls in A HUNDRED-YEAR-OLD train carriage on Daddows old parking lot in the main street of Cooroy could be a new ice cream shop. Block owner Rocky Mahony said the old carriage was currently being restored to be permanently mounted on the block with the plan of opening it as an ice cream shop. “It is all subject to Council approval but the old carriage is currently undergoing a five-week restoration program to restore it back to new. "The builders are pulling it all apart and putting it all back together piece by piece.

"Any timber that needs to be replaced will be recycled timber. “Once it is finished it will be moved into a permanent position on the block and the plan is to open it as an ice cream shop but if that doesn’t happen it will be a nice prop for our other business.” Rocky bought the block, known as Daddows old car park, in Maple St a year ago, specifically for his mobile pizza business. “I’ve been in the pizza business for nearly 20 years, with catering and mobile pizzas all over Australia. “We bought the block for our mobile pizza van.

"The whole site is going to be redeveloped with a new slab, walls, extensive landscaping, trees and shrubs. "And we're putting in a walk-in open theatre." Rocky said that throughout the restoration of the carriage and after, they will provide employment for eight locals. “We are using all Cooroy services for the restoration and will continue to provide jobs for eight Cooroy locals when it is finished.” The train carriage, a “beauty” built in 1915, was trucked up to Cooroy from the Blue Mountains in NSW. Dig into tales of old buildings WHAT: Matt Bushell Exhibition WHEN: Until March 24 WHERE: Bendigo Bank, 36 Maple Street, Cooroy

SUPPORTED INDEPENDENT LIVING (SIL) HOUSES

COST: Free INFO: mattamation.com

WHEN it comes to finding new ways to help local artists to showcase and sell their works, it’s hard to go past the efforts of the teams at the Tewantin and Cooroy branches of the Bendigo Bank. As part of the bank’s “profit for purpose” agenda, the branches have opened themselves up as free exhibition spaces and offered local artists a month-long residency where all revenue made from any sales goes directly back to the artist. Cooroy branch, at 36 Maple St, is playing host to Noosa-based author and photographer Matt Bushell’s exhibition which coincides with the launch of his book Memories of Australia - Abandoned Buildings and Their Stories.

24/7 support in a home Matt Bushell, pictured, is exhibiting at Bendigo Bank Cooroy.

Matt, who studied Design and Communication at the University of the Sunshine Coast, with a minor in Photography, found himself drawn to telling the stories of abandoned buildings through photography, almost by accident. He was working in Singapore and spending his spare time taking photographs of graffiti, when he found the buildings the graffiti was in were just as good a subject. Taking the concept further, Matt returned to Australia and started to put together his 240-page book capturing our abandoned past. “How do we engage with places that once played a pivotal role in our communi-

ties?” Matt asks. “Memories of Australia explores this question by documenting abandoned buildings across Australia. “Witness how nature is leading a successful takeover of old convents, power plants, textile factories, skate parks, and houses that now sit idle, awaiting their fate.” Matt’s images provide a glimpse into a previous era, prompting questions around our changing culture and the architectural legacy of our past. Matt’s work will be on show until March 24 in the branch. It can also be seen online at his website mattamation.com

ROCKETSHIP LANDS IN COOROY The centrepiece of the Hinterland Playground in Cooroy has arrived. The rocketship, which is almost seven metres tall and weighs around two tonnes was craned into position following its short journey from Studio Steel in Cooroy. Project Manager Paul Brennan said the stainless steel rocketship has been constructed using an old cooling tower that used to be part of the original mill works. “The stainless steel cooling tower along with old fire pits, large steel rings and recycled bridge timbers have been recycled and repurposed as play equipment for this unique playground,” Paul said. “It’s been an important aspect to the creation of this space to maintain a connection to the history of the site and the rocketship is a great example of this.” Construction will be completed in coming weeks and this unique nature-based, all-abilities playground is scheduled to open to the public in March 2022. The project is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies program in association with Noosa Council.

KIN KIN RECREATIONAL HALL WORK UNDERWAY Local community looking forward to works being completed in coming months Work to clean and disinfect the Kin Kin Recreational Hall in preparation for remediation building work has been completed. The cleaning and disinfecting work was required due to long term damage by Microbat Guano which can be dangerous to humans. The good news is that the Guano is all gone, and

Page

the damage was not as bad as expected, so the external weatherboard cladding and major structural elements of the building can be retained, keeping the heritage look and feel of the hall. According to Kin Kin Community President, Jann Bonsall, the community is very much looking forward to the

works being competed. “Once the work is finished, we hope to welcome many different community groups back to the facility from babies and toddlers play groups to craft, reading and social clubs,” Ms Bonsall said. Work will now start to refit the existing community kitchen,

restore the internal VJ cladding and flooring within the building’s upper level as well as electrical and lighting work. This project is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s South East Queensland Community Stimulus Package in association with Noosa Council.

BRIDGE UPGRADES IN FULL SWING Work to replace the existing Wahpunga Lane Bridge in Kin Kin is underway and, weather and construction conditions permitting, will be completed in approximately four months.

Workouts for seniors The Ageing Well Noosa program for seniors is offering fun-filled and interactive Zoom workout sessions.

The bridge is a key connector between Sister Tree Creek Road and Gympie-Kin Kin Road. The single-lane bridge provides access to Kin Kin and users of the Noosa Trail Network. The timber bridge was identified as a high priority for replacement based on a condition assessment. Reusable timber parts of the existing timber bridge will be salvaged and used in other council projects.

The self-paced classes are designed to improve different areas of health and wellbeing and still stay connected while at home.

bridge,” Dennis said.

According to Project Manager, Dennis Luinstra, the current single-lane timber bridge will be demolished and a wider concrete single-lane bridge built in the same location.

“The construction of the new bridge will use a Modular Bridge System which means that most components can be pre-fabricated, delivering a quicker build time and reducing workplace health and safety risks associated with traditional bridge building methods,” he said.

“The new bridge will have a design life of 100 years, comply with all current bridge standards and will require less maintenance than the existing

This renewal follows the recent complete replacement of Tablelands Bridge B in Cooran which provides vital access to residents, accommodation,

users of the Noosa Trail Network, and visitors to the lookout. These bridges are part of a comprehensive bridge refurbishment program jointly funded by the Australian Government and council. Other bridge work being delivered under this program includes the Cooroy Belli Creek Road Bridge, Lawnville Road Bridge, Garth Prowd Bridge and Lake Doonella Bridge.

COMMUNITY GRANTS APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN Funding supports environment, sporting, arts and cultural projects Applications for the latest round of council grants are now open, in the categories of Community, Environment and Climate Change, and Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF). Grants will be awarded to eligible not-for-profit organisations, local individuals, businesses and environment organisations, providing the opportunity to improve facilities, purchase equipment, host several new events and programs, and to achieve the aim of net-zero emissions by 2026. The Climate Change Response grants will also consider applications from community groups to install sustainable infrastructure such as solar

panels or energy-efficient lighting etc.

FREE classes are available until 1st April 2022 - $5 cost thereafter. Please contact Michaela to register with the ‘Ageing Well Noosa’ Program and to participate in Zoom Classes - 0449 047 746. To find out what new activities or workshops are coming, subscribe to the Ageing Well Noosa e-newsletter on council’s website.

Free weekend buses Free weekend buses are now a reality in Noosa as council kicks off a 12-month trial that sees free weekend travel. All existing Translink services that operate within Noosa are now free every weekend. Building on the success of the free holiday buses at Christmas and Easter, the aim is to change the longterm behaviour of travellers, making it second nature to get on a bus to get around.

In 2021, not-for-profit group Eco Trio, namely artists Rosie Lloyd-Giblett, Helena Jackson Lloyd and Yanni Van Zijl, secured a RADF grant to undertake the project: A River’s Tale.

The trial includes services 626, 627, 628, 629 and 632. The success of the trial will depend on the uptake and patronage of weekend services.

The trio worked with environmental groups to provide a visual documentary raising awareness about the importance of the Noosa River ecosystem.

ThornBird flies solo for the first time SHE'S sung with some of music’s great storytellers such as Bob Dylan, Paul Kelly and Missy Higgins, and now Vikki Thorn has some of her own stories that she’d like to share with you. After 28 years of performing as one-third of the iconic Australian folk rock group, The Waifs, Thorn is celebrating the release of her debut solo album ThornBird, by showcasing her new material in The Brewery at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Friday, March 18. Her new songs explore the recurring theme of home and connection to place, and portray the humour and heartbreak of life. Known for her evocative song writing, Thorn’s new solo material was born out of 10 years of living in the canyons of Utah and sparked by a return to Western Australia during the pandemic upheavals. “Turns out I found myself with

a year of canceled Waif engagements,” she said. “Turns out I had a bunch of songs sitting in a box.” “Throw in a chance encounter with some fellow musicians keen to collaborate and this all turns out as an album”. Adding to what promises to be a memorable evening of new music will be the appearance of Nambour-based Australian/Fijian soul artist, Andrea Kirwin. Kirwin’s original music is an earthy blend of folk, roots, hip hop, funk, reggae and soul, and her unique vocal style

ranges from honey-toned and calming, to a bluesy, soulful gospel wail. Thorn herself is renowned for her powerful vocals and blues harp playing. Her new songs weave through country and blues, slightly side-stepping away from the folk format of The Waifs. This show is an 18+ event and proudly supported by Live Music Australia – a Federal Government initiative. Tickets are $40 (plus booking fee) and are available through Oztix. The latest labour force data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics underlines the strength of the Palaszczuk Government’s Economic Recovery Plan for Queensland. During January, Queensland recorded the highest growth in employment, and the largest fall in unemployment of any state in Australia. Queensland defied expectations of an Omicron-induced downturn, creating 17,400 jobs in the month. Australia would have gone backwards without Queensland, given employment increased by just 12,900 across the nation. This strength is thanks to our world-leading health

response, which allowed our economy to stay open until Queenslanders had sufficient access to vaccinations. Since we were first elected, the Palaszczuk Government has seen the creation of more than 1000 jobs, on average, every single week in Queensland. That’s 376,800 new jobs under Labor.

Nine local groups share in $250,000

Congratulations to the nine local organisations which were successful with their applications for a grant in Round 112 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. Gympie Auto Sports Club, Hunchy Community Association, Lily House, Nambour

Golf Club, PCYC Sunshine Coast, Sunshine Valley Men’s Shed, Nambour Tram Co, 2nd Nambour Scout Group and Woombye School of Arts each took a share of the $250,000 awarded across the Nicklin Electorate. The Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) is Queensland’s largest one-off community grants program and distributes approximately $60 million each year to not-for-profit community groups. From 2022 the program changes to include one super round with grants of up to $100,000. Applications for the Super Round opened on February 21, so get in touch with my office for more details.

John Taylor Your Denture Expert

What a Difference a Precision Denture Makes

HOLISTIC CHIROPRACTIC Would you like a denture that fits comfortably and gives you a natural appearance? Imagine what it would be like to smile and talk without embarrassment. Wearing dentures that are past their used-by date can cause irreversible changes in your mouth and appearance. Over time your jaw bones naturally shrink, and the supporting tissues change. When dentures become loose and the biting surfaces of the teeth become smooth the fit and function is greatly impaired. You may experience head, neck or shoulder pain, jaw pain, clicking jaw joints, difficulty chewing and sore pressure spots. Your face may look older or appear sunken in as you begin to lack support around your mouth. Your lips may disappear. Ill-fitting dentures also create digestive problems which may affect your overall health. Are you finding it difficult to eat certain foods? A new precision denture will restore

your facial muscles, which will improve your appearance, and eating your food will become more comfortable and enjoyable. Your dentures are vitally important: They are directly related to your quality of life, and Precision Dentures offers expertly designed natural looking teeth, crafted by hand with superior comfort and function. During your private, personalised consultation with John Taylor, your concerns will be listened to and you will be given advice on your denture requirements so you can make an informed decision on what is best for you. Trusted advice and quality dentures: John Taylor has been providing residents in the Noosa area with quality precision-fitting dentures for over 40 years. He is assisted by his son Luke, and your denture will be individually made in their in-house laboratory to your satisfaction.

Free weekend bus trial underway Council’s 12-month trial of free weekend bus travel is under way. The initiative is an extension of the Go Noosa Free Holiday Buses that operate during the Christmas and Easter holidays. The Free Holiday Bus program increases the use of public transport.

It is hoped the weekend trial will encourage more residents and visitors to use public transport. This initiative is helping work toward Council’s sustainable transport goals. The weekend trial helps more people access busy locations like Hastings Street, where it can be hard to park. With the start of the 12-month weekend trial, it’s a significant amount of free travel we are now offering, and we hope to really change the long-term behaviour of travellers. Sandy Bolton State Member for Noosa

No harm in taking the time to walk a mile in another’s shoes WITH the Omicron wave having reached its peak and some relaxation of restrictions with more to come in coming weeks, it is still important to stay vigilant as COVID is very much amongst us. Indeed, future waves and variants are currently projected for up to two years. However, as we have seen, changes to projections occur rapidly! In your COVID ‘toolkit’, measures such as handwashing, distancing and masks are still standard, and ATAGI highly recommends boosters to increase protection, with Novavax vaccinations now available as a choice from February 21. Whilst we have an amazing community where we see extreme compassion and empathy, we have also seen, creeping in during COVID, a lack of empathy on a range of matters, such as ‘labeling’ those with a different belief, and some quite unbelieveable commentary that has led to me scratching my head in confusion and disbelief. This was especially prevalent in my recently completed Legal Affairs and Safety Committee’s inquiry into serious vilification and hate crimes across Queensland. Empathy, according to Dr Google, is ‘the ability to understand and share the feelings of another'. That is not easy unless you have walked in another’s shoes, experiencing the mud that sticks, or the soles that are well worn from effort. Hence why broadening

our knowledge of their world and experiences, through their sharing and our conversations, is so important. Whether speaking at events, in Parliament, or sharing in columns or Facebook about what is going on in our community, the aim is to increase understanding and to decrease division, as these detract from the common ground that is required to better our world and get through disasters including COVID. Many ‘observers’ ask where I get my patience from when responding to criticism of my efforts to unite versus divide. After some brutal misconceptions regarding my sharing of key messages on social media from a recent rally, I realise that many are confusing my ‘patience’ with what is ‘empathy’ for others. This can at times be in direct conflict with my own beliefs, or in line with those who actively politic against me! Differing viewpoints or perceptions are nothing to get angry or abusive about. It is an exercise in understanding how the belief was formed. And you can only get that by listening and accepting that we do not know everything, and that our perceptions of a situation are filtered by our own experiences. Others may be able to explain better, including Confucius who said, “Real knowledge is to know the extent of one’s ignorance” and Socrates who wrote that “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know

nothing.” For our community to prosper and move beyond COVID and a raft of other issues that impact our world, we require empathy and preparedness to listen and learn. Empathy for others with opposing viewpoints does not weaken you or your beliefs. It demonstrates a raft of very admirable qualities, decreases divisions whether in your personal or work relationships and community endeavors, as well as lessens social unrest. Most importantly, it is key to ending vilification, and moving forward to a place where ‘hate crimes’ are another part of our past. I see this as one of the most important social contracts we can have with each other. As we move from COVID into the many other realms that require us all to come together, take a moment and ask, are you a contributor, a bystander or changemaker in this space? From the incredible people whose very many diverse viewpoints I work with every day, if any community across QLD can lead the way in achieving greater empathy as part of increasing knowledge and moving forward, we can. Until next edition, keep updated by checking in at Noosa 360 on www.sandybolton.com/noosa360, join us on Facebook and if there are any concerns, please call us on 07 5319 3100 or email noosa@parliament. qld.gov.au Sandy

Noosa Christian College 2021 Dux Alyssa Brownell is off to study physics at QUT.

Alyssa gets all her Dux in a row IT was worth the wait for Alyssa Brownell, when she was finally announced as Noosa Christian College 2021 Secondary Dux. The new ATAR system and delayed results meant that Alyssa could not be honoured as Dux at the 2021 end-of-year Awards Ceremony but she was thrilled when she received the good news last month. Commenting on the achievement when it was announced on the school’s Facebook page, proud mum Piia Brownell joked that Alyssa now had all her dux in a row, having received the honour at both primary and high school levels. “As your mum, I am ever so chuffed at your dedication and love of education,” she said. As well as her wellearned Dux Certificate, Alyssa receives $200 cash from Noosa Christian College. To cap off an outstanding Year 12, Alyssa achieved

marks of 100 per cent on all internal QCAA moderated assignments in Physics and Chemistry. It might pay to take a deep breath before reading this full list of Alyssa’s 2021 awards – it’s as lengthy as it is impressive: Secondary College Dux Award, Year 12 Cultural Award, 2021 Certificate of Excellence for Outstanding Performance in Senior Chemistry by the Royal Chemical Institute, 2021 Certificate of Excellence for Physics for Outstanding Performance in Physics by the Australian Institute of Physics, 2021 Australian Defence Force Future Innovators Award for Innovation and Learning in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (includes a $550 prize). Alyssa also achieved Top Subject Awards for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Visual Art and a Commendation for English Literature. Last

year, Alyssa received the William and Hilde Chenhall Research Trust Scholarship, which is awarded each year to a student with exceptional talent and interest in Science. With such impressive results in her final year of secondary school, Alyssa now enters the next exciting stage of her education and has accepted a placement at Queensland University of Technology in the Bachelor of Physics (Honours Program). She is yet to decide whether to major in Geophysics, Nanophysics or Astrophysics. Due to privacy, Noosa Christian College declined to reveal Alyssa’s ATAR score, but a school representative said it was “very impressive”. “A huge congratulations to Alyssa for her achievements and for being a great student leader at Noosa Christian College. We are very proud of you,” said the school representative.

Planning continues for Field Day A LOCAL car club is the driving force behind the 2022 Cooroy Field & Heritage Day to celebrate the history of the region. The Combined Coastal Car Club is organising the inaugural event. The original date had been set for Sunday, March 13, however the rains of the last week have forced the organisers to postpone until a new date - to be advised when it is known. When the event does happen, it will shine the spotlight on the families and businesses that have contributed to the development of the Cooroy region and surrounds. Car Club spokesman Ian Skipworth said this type of event was becoming popular across Australia but he believed it was the first time one had been hosted in Cooroy. Like many things, the arrival of the Cooroy Field & Heritage Day has been affected by COVID-19, with early planning starting pre-pandemic, but its launch being delayed as everyone’s focus moved to fighting the virus. The idea for the day was conceived at a monthly meeting of the club more than two years ago, when it was decided the annual Car Show & Shine in October should be joined by another event in the first half of the year. The club had previously hosted an annual Truck & Tractor Show, so it was agreed to re-launch this event with the addition of farm machinery such as stationary engines, hay bailers and ploughs. “Thus, the name ‘Field Day’ came about,” Mr Skipworth said, noting that traditional “Field Days” showcased all kinds of equipment and vehicles used on a farm. “COVID-19 entered our lives and everything was put on hold,” Mr Skipworth said, “although enquiries continued to be made about how field days were organised elsewhere.” A number of antique machinery clubs were contacted in South East Queensland and it was discovered that March was free of annual events. So the date was chosen and,

with Cooroy’s heritage being dairy farming, small cropping, timber and, importantly, the families and businesses that have thrived in the region, the name Field & Heritage Day was decided upon. Mr Skipworth said that, as the planning gained momentum, it became clear that people were genuinely interested in the heritage of the area in which they lived. Discoveries included that the Cooroy Pony Club building was once a co-op drop-off and pick-up point for local smallcrop producers. In early November last year, car club members contacted every local group they thought would be interested in participating in the event. “Most replied and it is heartening to see that many of these groups agreed to have a display on the day,” Mr Skipworth said. Participants include: Cooroy RSL, Camphor Laurel Club, Cooroora Woodworkers Club, Cooroy Noosa Genealogy Group, Noosa Council, Noosa Museum, Gympie Stationary Engines, Wide Bay Historic Engine Club, Historic Truck Clubs and the Black Mountain Fire Brigade. On display will be vintage cars, trucks, tractors and farm equipment, while operating stationary engines will be fired up and a blacksmith will demonstrate the forging of small items. Trades and crafts of days gone by will be highlighted,

along with the history and ancestry of our community. Keeping with the theme, car club members will be cooking damper in camp-ovens and making billy tea. The Tewantin/Noosa Lions Club will provide more contemporary food and a coffee van will attend. The Camphor Laurel Club has kindly donated a coffee table for a raffle, and other items have been donated as prizes. The Cooroy Pony Club will

manage ticket sales and be the recipient of any proceeds. With the region’s anticipated strong support, the Combined Coastal Car Club is confident the inaugural event’s success will lead to an annual staging. Admission will be $5 for adults, with children under-15 gaining free access if accompanied by an adult. The Cooroy Coastal Car Club’s next show which will be the main show of the year, will be on October 16, 2022.

Tennis ace nets top job FROM winter in London to summer in Cooroy. That’s the journey Cooroy Tennis Club’s new head coach, James Webber, and his young family took at the end of last year. The Webbers landed in Brisbane in December after James had applied for, and won, the role as the new coach, while they were still living in a COVID-lockeddown London. “The club is looking to rejuvenate itself after losing a lot of membership during COVID,” James said. “They were looking for someone to come in and revamp the program and that is what I’ve been doing in London.” James, who grew up playing competitive junior tennis in Queensland and attended the Tennis School of Excellence at Kelvin Grove State High School, competed at the national level before opting to follow the path of tennis coach rather than player. He left Australia 20 years ago to travel and coach, and has coached players of all ages and abilities in the US, New Zealand and most recently in the United Kingdom, where he ran one of the largest recreational tennis academies in London. He also managed the Hotshots (Mini Tennis) Program at the National Tennis Centre for several years, and has coached high performance players who have gone on to participate in Junior Grand Slams and gain tennis scholarships in the USA. James said that once COVID hit in the UK, the

tennis academy work changed and so did his perspective on where he wanted to be next. When he and his wife Viktorija celebrated the birth of their little boy Arthur, they turned their minds back to Queensland. “It’s a massive change. It’s a completely different lifestyle,” he said. “In the end though, we were living in the city without any of the benefits of living in the city.” For James, the first impressions of tennis in Cooroy have been strong. A “Come and Try Day” held at the start of February brought more than 70 players out for a game and he said that he’s already starting to look for assistant coaches to help out, as his

coaching sheet is starting to book out. “It’s a great little spot. The courts are excellent. Although the clubhouse is a little bit dated, it has a lot of character and is a great place to play at. I didn’t realise how far people travel from around the place to play here.” James’s goal is to deliver a comprehensive junior and adult program that offers coaching sessions that cater to a wide range of different ages and levels. To find out more about tennis at Cooroy Tennis Club, including the offer of a free trial lesson for new players on junior or adult group classes until the end of March, visit allplaytennis. com.au or phone James on 0473 569 501.
