Pickled Possum popular with patrons

THE annual Cooroy Fusion Festival on 14 May is a showcase of everything wonderful about the Noosa Hinterland. Pickled Possum is

one of firm favourites with festival goers but it isn’t a local delicacy, it’s the name of the festival bar! “The Pickled Possum

Bar is situated in an ideal location with a great view of the entertainment on the Bendigo Bank stage and all the surrounding

crowds throughout the markets. This year thanks again to the sponsorship of Cooroy RSL we’ll also be hosting a special sponsor’s and volunteer’s hospitality event in the Pickled Possum Bar so it really will be the place to be and be seen!” explained Chris Bell, Chairperson of Cooroy Fusion committee. “We couldn’t resist sponsoring something as iconic as the Pickled Possum Bar at a fantastic community event like Cooroy Fusion Festival. This event is all about the community and what the wonderful Noosa hinterland has to offer which is something we feel passionate about at Club Cooroy RSL. The volunteers that run this event should be applauded, as it’s a great free day out and we hope to see you there!” said

Cooroy RSL manager, Tina Mayfield. Cooroy Fusion Festival is run by the Cooroy Future Group Inc and couldn’t be produced without the support from festival partners Noosa Council and Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank and sponsors Greenwood Grove, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, Cooroy Supa IGA, Club Cooroy RSL, Suttons Cleaning Service, Raine & Horne, Wimmers, John Maddill Toyota, Gelignite Jacks, Cooroy Service Centre, Mower & ATV Solutions, Cartwrights Lawyers, Fiona Winter Realty, Palm Lake Resort, Chapmans Auto Repairs, McDermott Aviation, Max Watterson & Associates, Firefly Solutions and Sunsign Coast. This Easter, hop aboard Noosa’s free holiday buses

Meeting the Easter Bunny are (L-R) Acting Mayor Frank Wilkie, Cr Ingrid Jackson, Cr Joe Jurisevic and Cr Jess Glasgow. SKIP the pressure of parking this Easter with Council’s free holiday buses. Travel will be free on five local TransLink bus routes until April 17, with a free shuttle on the road

between Peregian Beach and Noosa Heads. “The free holiday bus initiative is ever-popular,” Acting Mayor Frank Wilkie said. “Tens of thousands of people typically board

the buses during the Easter and Christmas holidays. Once again we’re pleased to deliver this initiative in cooperation with Sunbus and TransLink.” The free holiday buses

are a great, free opportunity, for residents and visitors to try public transport. “More than 60 per cent of passengers polled during the recent Christmas free holiday bus initiative said they had access to a car in Noosa, so it’s great to see people actively choosing to take the bus instead,” Cr Wilkie said. More than 55 per cent of passengers polled were locals. Travel on a range of regular services, and a temporary service will be free this Easter. Regular services: Route 626 – Tewantin to Sunrise Beach via Noosa Heads; Route 627 – Tewantin to Sunshine Beach via Noosa Heads; Route 628 – Noosa Parklands to Noosa Junction, via Noosa Civic; Route 629 – Tewantin to Noosa Junction via Noosa

Civic; Route 632 – Noosa to Cooran via Cooroy and Pomona. Additional temporary service: Route 064 between Peregian Beach and Noosa Heads. For residents living between Peregian Beach and Noosa, instead of catching Route 620, the temporary service, Route 064 (operated by Sunbus) is for you. The Boreen Point Flexilink service and Noosa Council Cabs services will also be free from April 8 to 17 (normal booking procedures apply). Generally, a weekend timetable will operate on most public holidays. Timetables are available at www.translink.com.au or call 13 12 30 anytime. Most of the free services terminate by 7pm. For more information visit Council’s website: www.noosa.qld.gov.au or call (07) 5329 6500.

news The joy of learning is alive and well at Pomona School

COOROY RAG OUR local educators and students are now on their well-earned Easter break. But before they headed off, some preppies at Pomona State School took some time to say thank you to a valued sponsor. Funding from the Pomona agency of Bendigo Bank has helped support the purchase of a number of books for the school reading resource room. The young students are now learning to read these books through a specific method of teaching. Synthetic phonics involves words being broken up into the smallest units of sound, called phonemes. Children learn to make connections between the letters of written texts and the sounds of spoken language. Pomona State School principal, Alyson Covey said synthetic phonics also teaches children how to identify all the phonemes in a word and match them to a letter in order to be able to spell correctly. “Learning to read is like

learning to solve a code,” Alyson said. “Children must learn how the written symbols called letters and words can be translated into language. The synthetic phonics approach teaches children to read words by saying the sounds the letter represents and blending those sounds together fast, from left to right throughout the word to read the word,” she added. As children gain phonic knowledge and practise the skill of blending sounds together, along with a developing bank of sight words they will become more confident readers and read increasingly more complex texts. The funding for the books the children work with is part of a sponsorship package from the Pomona Agency of Bendigo Bank which has helped support the school’s Breakfast Club program. Since the launch of the agency is April 2015, the cross section of sponsorships has also included the Mini Lit program for the younger grades (abbreviated from

Preppies Pippa, Tyson, Claire and Joshua in Pomona State School Library with Principal, Alyson Covey and Bendigo Bank’s Geoff Edwards Meeting Initial Needs in Literacy). It’s another teaching program designed to help improve children’s reading and writing skills. It builds on each student’s progress and, in turn builds confidence and selfbelief in each students’ own literacy learning ability. Geoff Edwards is manager of the Pomona agency

and Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. He said his most recent visit to Pomona State School was another opportunity to see the great work that’s being carried out through the sponsorships of the Pomona agency. “We’re loving the relationship we’re developing with Pomona State School,”

Geoff said. “Our financial support comes from working with the school to find ways to complement what their needs are from a community perspective. We’re here because the people of Pomona wanted their own bank and this is one way our profits can benefit the students of the area,” Geoff added.

JOYCE Cunningham has received an award from the Endeavour Foundation in recognition of her 32 years of volunteer service at the Cooroy Endeavour Foundation Op Shop. Before retiring to Cooroy and beginning her long stint as an Endeavour Foundation volunteer, Joyce, who had been a member of the Australian Women’s Land Army during World War II, had only worked on farms. She began volunteering day a week with Endeavour on January 16, 1985. At that time it was the only Op shop in Cooroy. “Most things then were priced at 5 and 10 cents an item, and a frock could be bought for under $1,” says Joyce. “There wasn’t a warehouse available for new stock for the shop. The only stock available was donated from the public. At the end of the day if we had

made $30 we would say ‘that was a good day’. Any stock that wasn’t suitable for sale in the shop was cut up for rags to sell. A bag of rags, weighing ten pounds was sold for $5 and we couldn’t keep up with supply at times as they were very popular. “I have enjoyed the work and the fact that the money raised goes to help the disabled lead a better life,” says Joyce. “I haven’t expected any rewards or recognition for what I do, as that is how my mother taught me to help others.” Endeavour Foundation Op Shop is still in Maple Street Cooroy, and volunteers are always welcome.

Questionable question time In our Federal Parliament we have a Daily Question Time, Quite devoid of interest or any reason or rhyme. A Government member asks a question of the relevant Minister, (Who makes sure the question does not contain anything politically sinister). The Minister knows the answer, of course, he probably wrote the question, It’s jocularly called a Dorothy Dixer, more an invitation. The Minister spends a minute or so in self praise and self-congratulation, The balance of time is spent abusing the Opposition. The Opposition in turn will ask a question, perhaps with a bit of sting, But often gets abuse, and rarely gets told anything. The Speaker, when questioned on a point of relevance, If unsure can usually dig up an ancient reference. I think he does a great but difficult job, Controlling that unruly noisy mob. Why can’t they have positive questions, and positive answers too, And limit the Dorothy Dixers to only one or two? It’s such a farcical waste of time in its present form, Make it a circus or a theatre, so that they really could perform!

WHAT a wonderful time of year Easter is. I hope you have plans to celebrate and relax with family and friends. Now that Easter is upon us again, how many of us are thinking about a different type of egg - the nest egg? We all strive to save our hard earned money, which is getting more and more difficult with life’s ever increasing expenses. There will be many key times in our lives that will make us think about our budget. Like starting a new job, getting married, buying a home, saving for a holiday and many more. Any time is a great time to think about your budget and planning to grow that little nest egg. Many of us struggle with budgets; they’re too hard, too complicated and too restrictive. A budget is a great tool to use to help start a savings plan and take more control of your money. Most banks will offer help with budgets, whether it’s an online calculator that you key in your information, or a budget planner you record your own details. These need to be used to help track your income and expenses. For your income, take into account all of your wages, pensions, family payments, interest, dividends etc. That is usually the easy part, knowing what we earn. The expenses can be harder to work out. Put these into sections such as necessary expenses for your usual bills and non essential for other items such as entertainment, holidays, treats etc. To accurately work out your expenses, use your bank account statements, credit card statements

or your bills to find out what you spend your money on. Remember those other bills that may come in less frequently, such as rates or car registrations. Once you have these completed, you can then work out your disposable income, this is the amount left over once you have allowed for all of your expenses to be paid. Your bank can help you choose an account that’s right for you to save your extra money. Depending upon your situation, this may be in an offset account if you have a home loan or in a special savings account that will pay more interest. Remember to allow yourself some flexibility within your budget and be realistic. It’s no use having a great budget on paper if in reality it can’t work. If you would like to discuss your budget or a savings account, please contact me on 5447 7131 (Cooroy), 5485 1786 (Pomona). You can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

COOROY RAG

Think you know life insurance? Think again Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* THESE five facts – some little known and others commonly misunderstood, will shed a whole new light on life insurance. Whatever your goals in life, everyone wants to ensure their loved ones are looked after should the worst happen. Most people think they understand life insurance – you pay the premiums and your insurer pays out a lump sum in the event of your death. But it’s a subject that’s commonly misunderstood. Here are five facts about life insurance that might surprise you: You could get life insurance even if you have a pre-existing medical condition. There is a myth that having a pre-existing medical condition automatically excludes you from buying life insurance altogether. This is not true. You can take out life insurance, however your pre-existing condition may be excluded, or you may be required to pay a higher premium for your insurance cover. Different

companies define preexisting medical conditions in different ways, so it’s important to read any disclosures thoroughly and shop around if necessary, and remember that you have a legal obligation to disclose any pre-existing conditions to your insurer – otherwise you run the risk of your claim not being paid. The life insurance cover that comes with your superannuation may not be adequate. Did you know that more than 70% of Australian life insurance policies are held inside super1? This can be a tax-effective way to pay for life insurance as the cover can be paid for out of your pre-tax contributions rather than your take-home pay. But the life cover bought by super funds is often based on averages and may not be tailored to your individual circumstances. Statistics also show that 95% of Australians have inadequate life cover2, so it’s important to review the life insurance provided through your

super fund to ensure it’s sufficient. If not, you could consider buying additional cover – either inside or outside your super fund. Life insurance can be tailored to suit your needs. Just as with other types of insurance, life insurance is not one-sizefits-all. You can adjust your cover to reflect your changing circumstances – such as having children, buying a home or retirement – to ensure your cover remains suitable to your needs. Doing this will also mean that you are never paying more in premiums than you need to. You can alter your life insurance premiums. Some people think that insurance premiums only go one way: up. But there are a number of ways to alter your premiums should you need to. Firstly, your policy may have a feature that automatically increases your cover each year to keep up with the rising costs of living. This means, however, that you may pay higher premiums

for the increased cover. If you don’t need this additional cover you can cancel your next automatic increase and your cover remains the same. Your policy may also allow you to fix your premiums at their current level. If you choose this option you will retain your cover, but the amount of cover you have will decrease each year on your policy anniversary. And if you make positive lifestyle changes that improve your health, you can request an insurance reassessment to see if you can decrease the cost of your cover. You can also control your premiums by opting for longer waiting and benefit periods. Renewals are guaranteed even if your circumstances change. Once you’ve taken out life cover, it will automatically renew each year regardless of changes to your health until you either choose to cancel it or reach the maximum age under your policy. But if you let your insurance lapse you will no longer be covered,

Now OPEN at NOOSA CIVIC

and you may not be able to get the same level of cover again in the future, so a good strategy is to take out cover when you are young and healthy – and retain it. If you would like to discuss or find out more, please call us on 07 5447 7740. Source:

ELLIE Graham, a year 11 student at Noosa District State High School, has been dancing and cheerleading with Ausfunk in Coolum for many years now. In 2016 she was part of Ausfunk teams who competed in cheer competitions in Palm Springs, California, and in Hip Hop Dance competitions in Hawaii. “Element” is an all girl hip hop crew aged 1421 who have been performing together for two years. In November 2016 the girls competed in the AASCF National Championship, and came first in their category, and runner-up hip hop grand champion. This achievement gained them an invitation to compete in Florida in the USA in April 2017 at the United States All Star Federation Dance and Cheerleading World Championship, competing against hip hop teams from over 40 countries around the world, which is the highest level these girls can compete at. The Element girls have worked hard training and preparing for their trip and are really looking forward to dancing in a very competitive environment and doing the best they can. They have been raising funds for the trip, and started a Go Fund Me page https://www.gofundme.com/helpausfunk-dancers-compete-in-usa to help pay for

the competition costs such as music copyright and entry fees, dance costumes, shoes, team travel clothing (team jackets etc.). The girls continue to train and rehearse during the school holidays, with increased sessions as their departure date gets closer.

news Let’s become champion recyclers

Heart & Soul

COOROY RAG

NOOSA Shire residents are already some of the best recyclers in Australia with nearly 5000 residents voluntarily recycling their garden waste. Council is calling on all residents to ramp up their recycling efforts in readiness for the roll-out of the new three-bin system in September, as part of the Towards Zero Waste initiative. More than 9000 homes and duplexes in urban areas of the shire will receive a new garden waste bin, in addition to their usual recycling and general waste bins. Council’s Waste and Environmental Health Manager, Wayne Schafer, said: “If 14,000 households are all using their garden waste bin correctly, we will be diverting thousands of tonnes of organic waste from landfill per year. “This means that we will be reducing the amount of global warming methane gas we produce and at the same time extending the life of our landfill. It is a classic win-win. “Council recycles garden waste by turning it into garden mulch and making it available back to resi-

dents for free,” Mr Schafer said. “We ask residents not to contaminate the garden waste bin, or the recycling bin, with plastic bags or other non-recyclables. These items seriously reduce the quality of mulch and our ability to process recyclables at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). “Plastic bags can only go into the general waste bin because they also contaminate the recycling bin. “As a Council we are very keen to recycle as much as possible, so we are also making larger 360L bins available from September 1 for both recycling and garden waste, upon request,” Mr Schafer said. Property owners who would like a 360L bin are urged to contact Council before 30 April if they want to order a larger bin for the start of the new three-bin system in September. Phone (07) 5329 6500. For more information about the new garden waste bin service please visit www.noosa.qld.gov.au/garden-green-wasteservices

Noosa Council Waste Manager Wayne Schafer says residents will receive an information flyer in the mail in early April. Unlike previous years, the collection will take place during the week, instead of on the weekend. Rubbish will need to be at the kerb before the Monday of the collection week,” Mr Schafer said. Residents must sort their rubbish into three separate piles: Useful household items that can be easily repaired; Metal items for recycling; Other rubbish. Each pile will be collected by a different

Patience appreciated as storm clean-up calls flood in

Injury compensation Commercial & building disputes Debt recovery Civil legal proceedings Personal & Professional service

THE clean-up in the wake of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie continues with 24 Council crews still on the ground. Parks and Natural Areas Coordinator Sara Cooke said staff were working through more than 600 requests from residents about fallen or damaged trees and storm debris. “We really appreciate residents’ patience as we work through a very long list of requests,” Ms Cooke says. “We will get to all of the requests as soon as possible, but it may take a little longer than usual given the number and nature of the requests we’re dealing with because of the storm. “But the community can rest assured we have all hands on deck to assist us with the clean-up,” Ms Cooke says.

“We have seven tree crews and nine Council Parks and Natural Areas crews clearing up vegetation, making areas safe and assisting residents with debris.” Ms Cooke said the initial priority had been making sure the busy public areas within the shire were safe. It’s a similar story for Council road crews, says Council’s Works Coordinator Edwin Hamill, with eight crews out and about the coastal area where most of the wind damage occurred. Council’s hinterland crews are busy dealing with damage caused by flooding. “Again, we appreciate residents’ patience as we work through the clean-up, and we will get to each job as quickly as possible,” Ms Cooke added.

THE residents of west Cooroy would like to congratulate Mr Milligan on withdrawing his appeal against Noosa Council’s decision to reject his intensive chicken meat complex at Ridgewood, west of Cooroy. We would like to reiterate that we are not against sustainable farming practices and support Mr Milligan’s horticultural pursuits, but this operation had the potential to affect local air quality, be a noise nuisance, and the heavy vehicles servicing the farm would have taxed already inadequate local roads. Finally, thanks to everybody who supported our cause, and particularly the community corespondents who ensured that locals had a legal voice in the appeal and could join with Noosa Council’s legal team to protect the Shire’s hinterland, Rod Ritchie Co-convenor No Broiler Farm Cooroy

Anzac Day in Cooroy

for Easter

EASTER TRADING Good Friday - Closed Saturday - 6am-2pm Sunday - 6am-10am Monday - 6am-11am

BELVEDERE NEWS 4 Diamond Street, Cooroy

PH: 5447 6018 The Shop on the other side of Town THE Dawn Service will be held at the Cooroy War Memorial in Tewantin Road commences at 4.55am and the Memorial Service at 10.30 am, also at the Cooroy War Memorial Anzac Day 2015 was a special day when we remembered the first landing at Gallipoli on 25th April 1915. However Anzac Day 2017 is no less important as we remember important and tragic anniversaries that took place 100 and 75 years ago. 1917 was the worst year in Australia’s history for war casualties with 76,836 Australians becoming casualties in battles such as Bullecourt, Messines, and the four-month campaign around Ypres known as the battle of Passchendaele. For New Zealand, it was equally bad. In two days of fighting at Messines in June, and two one-day battles in October, at Passchendaele, the New Zealand division had 9,700 casualties, 30 per cent more than their casualties in eight months fighting at Gallipoli. The memorial services on Anzac Day will give us all an opportunity to remember the “black days” of 1942, 75 years ago, when in a series of disasters for Australia, in Malaya, Singapore, and the islands to the north of Australia, 22,000 Australians were captured by the Japanese and more than 3000 became casualties in land, sea, and air battles in early 1942 The Royal Australian

Navy lost 7 ships during the year, 670 sailors killed in enemy action, and over 1000 Australian aircrew became casualties flying in Bomber Command in Europe in 1942. Darwin and other northern towns were attacked on 100 occasions in 1942/43 and Sydney was attacked by Japanese submarines as well as merchant ships being sunk off the eastern coast of Australia. 1942 was a bad year for the people of Cooroy and district when many young men from this area became prisoners of war. The Cooroy war memorial has the names of ten local men who died in World War Two; seven of whom had been captured by the Japanese in February 1942, and became prisoners of war. Frank Berg, Arthur Brockhurst and Albert Finney died building the notorious Burma to Thailand railway, and Robert Young died as a prisoner working in Malaya. Basil Honor and Domenic Picone of Cooroy, died during the Sandakan “death march” in North Borneo, which remains the greatest single atrocity committed against Australians in war. Colin Olsen, from Tuchekoi, was a commando captured at Rabaul. He died as a prisoner when the Montevideo Maru, the ship carrying him and more than a thousand Australian prisoners, was sunk off the Philippines in June 1942.

NEW Look

This sinking is Australia’s greatest maritime loss. For the Dawn Service in Cooroy, Tewantin Road will be closed to through traffic from 4.30 am and the Queensland Police Service and SES will have traffic diversions in place so that the area around the Cooroy war memorial will be safe for those attending the service. Those attending are requested to bring a small torch so that they can read the order of service. The annual Anzac Day march will take place on the eastern side of the railway line and will proceed to the war memorial for the mid-morning service. Assembly for the march will be at 9.45 am in Pearl

Lane behind the Cooroy Village Shopping Centre and the march, which will be led by the Noosa Pipes and Drums band, will commence at 10 am. The march will proceed up Pearl Lane and into Diamond Street where spectators will be able to follow the march to the Cooroy War Memorial. Ex-service men and women are invited to join the parade as are the children and grandchildren of war veterans. Students of the district schools are marching, as well as the Cooroy Scout Group, and other community organisations. The Memorial service will commence after the march at about 10.30 am

Fields of Poppies THE poppies to create our special tribute to our fallen Diggers are flowing in thick and fast. Our local community have now amassed 1200 poppies so far with more to come. Thank you to our local craft groups, Tewantin CWA ladies, and other wonderful and dedicated ladies in the community who have put in so much time and effort, (especially those suffering from arthritis in the hands) to help make this wonderful field of poppies as a tribute to our local heroes that sacrificed their life for us. All the poppies are different and very special, just like our local servicemen were.

news Timber Milling exhibition & big slabs

THE Cooroora Woodworkers Club milling team recycles unwanted logs into useful timber. The team’s equipment level is basic and consists of a trailer with an electric powered winch plus a few steel cables. Using this gear augmented by two lever bars, a chain saw and manpower the milling team has been collecting logs from various properties around Cooroy for many years. After cutting to a length of around 2.5M, the logs, some exceeding 1000Kg, are taken by trailer to the milling site at Ringtail Creek. A Lucas Mill fitted with a horizontal chain saw is used to cut the logs into slabs. Alex Findlay who is the timber milling convenor has been using the machine for over 14 years, says that milling team has cut many thousands of slabs. Each year the Lucas Mill is brought to Cooroy

for the Cooroora Wood & Craft Show and visitors can see the milling team in action. The mill is set up on the concrete slab adjacent to the Log Maze in the Lowermill Precinct. The cut slabs are offered for sale off the saw but seasoned slabs will also be available. Some slabs have been surfaced making them ready for use as bar and table tops. The show takes place on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th May. Entry is $2 pp (under 16 years Free). The Cooroora Wood & Craft Show is an independent show in co-operation with the Cooroy Fusion Festival. The milling exhibition always draws a large interested crowd and a lot of the timber is eagerly purchased. The timbers being milled varies from year to year but Camphor Laurel and Silky Oak are usually available as well as some rarer species.

Easter fun at Eumundi Markets

HOP along to the Original Eumundi Markets in the Easter school holidays! A highlight for kids visiting the markets is our FREE annual Easter Treasure Hunt, taking place on Easter Saturday 15 April. It’s open to the first 300 children to register at the market office (the pink building in the centre of the markets) from 8am. Treasure hunters are given clues and must find the answers as they make their way through our colourful markets. They can take their time and enjoy the market fun as they go along, and when they complete their journey, each young treasure hunter will receive a delicious chocolate Easter treat. Children visiting the market can also come along to our Kids Craft Workshops. The team from ’Bush Critters’ will help young market visitors to show their creativity in making their own artworks; foraging through baskets of natural materials such as seed pods and vines, using clay and paint to perfect their individual ‘critter’ which they can take home on the day!

This unique activity is FREE for the first 50 children who visit on Saturday 15 April and only $5 per child thereafter on Saturdays 1, 8 and 15 April between 7am and 2pm. We’re also very excited to have ‘Make Your Own Candles’ here with us on Saturdays 1 and 15 April from 7am to 2pm. This inexpensive, creative concept allows visitors of all ages to make their own candle right here at the market in less than 5 minutes! Let your creativity flow as you select the colours and scents of your choice, layering in your glass jar (just like you would with coloured sand) to create your own candle. A must-do activity this Easter school holidays! Eumundi Markets is renowned as the best art and craft market in Australia – where you can meet the artists and the makers face-to-face. Discover something different, something special, something handmade at our magical outdoor gallery under the trees.

First-time exhibition in the eye of the beholder THE works of artist Ann White are on public display for the first time at the Pomona Railway. Ann has been painting, drawing and sketching for 10 years. She has mostly honed her considerable skills either in her home studio in Pomona or while travelling in various exotic locations of the world. Her very first public exhibition features a range of figurative works in acrylic, oil, pen and ink and mixed media. The subjects are often still life, with the occasional surprise. The exhibition is called “The Common Thread of Beauty”, a reference to the one element these works have common. Ann has been inspired by the patterns and shapes of subjects as diverse as vintage china, the colours in an Indian scarf, the symmetry of a building, fruit and flowers picked from a hinter-

land garden or the unexpected discoveries made during adventures in India, Africa and Cuba. “Some of my favourite things are travel, the garden, and finding vintage and antique treasures,” Ann said. “I very often use these as inspiration for my work. They are such rich sources of beauty and painting or drawing them allows me to enjoy them even more. “I am thrilled, if a little nervous, about my first ever exhibition and I am grateful to the Pomona Railway Station Gallery for the opportunity to share some of my work.” The exhibition is at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery. It opens at 11am on Saturday 22 April and runs until 24 May. Find out more at pomonartgallery.com or facebook.com/ Pomonarailwaygallery.

ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS

A community conversation to counter suicide IT’S a natural response to the tragedy and crisis of suicide to want to get people moving, to get the community moving and to want to address the effect of what’s happened by ‘doing something’. It’s important that people and communities affected this way have a sense of control and that they believe the safety of the community can be restored. They also need to feel that the possibility of more suicides can be reduced. Pomona Community House, in conjunction with the StandBy Response Service at United Synergies, is providing an important community workshop to be held at the House on Wednesday 19 April, led by Lynda Neville. The workshop will deal with the sensitive issues of suicide and the bereavement suffered by individuals and the community when it occurs. The all-day event will be split into two parts. The morning session, ‘Responding to the River’, addresses the often challenging subject of “talking about suicide.” It aims to equip participants with basic suicide prevention and bereavement care approaches and will identify self-care needs for anyone exposed to suicide crisis. The afternoon session, ‘Crossing the River’, will address post-suicide concerns such as, “What do I say? What do I do?” It will equip service providers

and community caregivers with basic suicide bereavement intervention skills. The aim is to inform interested community members of the complex and sensitive issues surrounding suicide, according to Kathryn Shewring, Community Coordinator at Pomona Community House, “The sessions will be able to equip participants with basic suicide and bereavement care approaches. Ultimately, the day is about enhancing and further developing our community’s capacity to respond to suicide, trauma and related issues.” Kathryn explained, “It is a complex matter and one we should be aware of. The better we are taught how to talk about suicide, how to deal with the effects of traumatic loss and the complications of grief and crisis intervention, the better able we are to use appropriate techniques to assist those involved. The morning session starts at 9.15am and the day finishes at 3pm, with lunch between noon and 12.45pm. While registration is free, a charge of $3 applies to cover the cost of the lunch. Late registrations will be received on the day. Register by Friday 14 April in order to make catering easier. Please advise of any dietary requirements. For more information and registration call Lynda Small on 0407 766 961 or email lsmall@unitedsynergies.com.au

Living with eczema ECZEMA, also called dermatitis, is a group of conditions in which the skin is dry, itchy and scaly (note: not “hot,” which is usually more a sign of infection). In severe outbreaks the skin may become raw, red and bleeding. It affects up to 30% of pre-school aged children (5 years or under), and 1 in 6 school-aged children in Australia. Eczema is thought to be triggered by different factors for different people. Some common examples include: • Irritants (e.g. soaps and shampoos) • Allergens (e.g. dust mites and pet hair) • Microbes (e.g. some types of virus and bacteria) • Hot/cold temperatures (and humidity changes that accompany these) • Foods (e.g. dairy products and eggs) • Stress • Hormones Some of us live with this skin condition every day of our lives. The team at your LiveLife Pharmacy are here to help you and your family to look after your skin. Some lifestyle hints that we may recommend include: • Avoid excessively hot water when showering and bathing • When towelling dry, pat rather than rub your skin • Apply cool, wet compresses – the affected area may even be covered with bandages and dressings to help protect the skin and prevent • Avoid dry conditions (e.g. air conditioners and heaters) • Avoid soap based products - Use a soap-free cleanser or bath oil. Also try to avoid colours and fragrances in these cleansers. • Apply a thick moisturiser to the skin once or twice daily (best applied imme-

diately after a shower/bath to retain the moisture in the skin). Consider increasing this frequency of application if living/working in a dry/air-conditions/heated environment. • Wear clothes made of natural fibres where possible, so the skin may breathe • Avoid any known triggers and irritants • Wear protective gloves when using any type of chemical or detergent • Avoid chlorinated pools if possible. Otherwise, ensure you shower then moisturise your skin well when you get out. • When using a new cosmetic, try testing it first on a small, inconspicuous area of skin such

as your forearm. That way if you experience a reaction, you can avoid using it again. • Try to avoid scratching the skin, as this can lead to infection or scarring – keep your fingernails short! • Choose mild/unscented laundry detergent. Remember to consult one of our pharmacists should your symptoms persist. We have many more products such as steroid creams and antihistamines, and even complementary therapies which may be beneficial for your skin. Don’t suffer unnecessarily with skin conditions. Speak to your LiveLife pharmacist today and start living!!! Phone 5447 6028.

Not your average medium PSYCHIC medium, Ruth Perry, will be holding a psychic development workshop for beginners on Saturday, April 29 from 9.30am to 4pm at the Cooroy CWA Hall. The workshop will help you discover and develop psychic awareness and different ways to communicate with spirit. Ruth says she saw her first ghost when she was ten years old. “She just appeared at the end of my bed one night, wearing a white dress. I was already being abused by then so was used to keeping secrets, but she really scared me and I wanted to tell someone about her,” says Ruth. “So I told one of my friends at school. With what I would hope were the best of intentions she then told everyone else. The playground became fraught with ‘woooooo-oooo’ noises after that, and taunts like ‘liar’ and ‘weirdo’ whenever I appeared, so that didn’t help much. “But in the weirdest way, and completely unexpectedly, the lady did, over time, become my friend. “Spirits just kept popping in with information for whoever I was with at the time, and it was an insult to keep ignoring them. I have been as scared and confronted as anyone would be over the years, but have learned how to protect myself from spirits who have less than good intent. Anyone can.

For the very large part spirits come with good, communicative intentions, though sometimes they’re cheeky too, and I have had a lot of laughs over the years with them and my clients. With regard to my ability, and with no ego whatsoever, I am blessed to say it seems to be growing (especially since I got back to Australia in 2011 after two very confronting years in The Middle East), and am discovering other aspects of Mediumship which I hadn’t really given much thought to previously. Remote Locating and telekinesis to name a couple.” Besides a Sociology degree (which Ruth says is fascinating when you apply it to how Western society approaches all things spiritual) she also has a Cert 4 in TESOL. The workshop cost is $80. Morning and afternoon tea is provided. For more information phone 0468 349 123 or email notyouraveragemedium@gmail.com

The first step to injury prevention WHETHER it’s keeping up with your New Years resolutions of staying fit and active or commencing pre-season training for winter sports it is important to look after your body and stay injury free this year. Although many people are aware that warming up and stretching are important aspects prior to sport and exercise they can often be executed poorly or even in some cases missed, resulting in tight muscles and stiff joints. Poor flexibility and reduced joint range of movement have been shown to be factors contributing to the development of numerous injuries. A warm up should always take place prior to exercise as it allows your body and muscles time to produce heat and increase oxygen and nutrient supply to the muscles preparing the body for the specific demands required ahead. Recommendation is performing between 10-15 minutes of light cardiovascular exercise such as jogging, cycling or sports specific drills to gradually increase your heart rate and circulation. This produces an increase in blood flow where the muscles contract and relax through their full range of movement, improving your muscle elasticity. This will result in an increase in muscle and joint flexibility, reducing the risk of muscle strains

www.cooroyrag.com.au

or tears. Stretching should be performed as part of your warm up but often people are unsure of what type of stretching they should be doing. There are two types of stretches used, dynamic and static stretching. Dynamic stretching involves controlled, gentle movement which takes the muscles and joints continuously through their available range. Static stretching involves lengthening a muscle to its end of available range and holding it for a period of time, progressively increasing muscle length. Prior to exercise and to assist with your warm up, dynamic stretching has been shown to be more effective in preparing your muscles and body for the functional demands of sport or exercise. It actively improves your muscle flexibility and joint range of movement, reducing the risk of injury. Static stretches on the other hand, cause a cooling effect to the body and muscles and should be performed following sport to reduce the likelihood of muscle tightening, maintaining flexibility and assist with recovery. If you have any questions or concerned about your warm up routine feel free to give us a call at Hinteractive Physio on 54425556 and we can give you some advice to minimise risk of injury. Writing from the body

A WEEKEND of creativity and play with award winning writer, Natalie Sprite is being held at the Cooroy Library Community Access Room on Sat-

urday, April 22 from 10am to 3pm and Sunday April 23 from 10am to 2pm. “The body doesn’t lie. When we write from our bodies, we reach a deeper, more authentic place in our work,” says award winning writer, Natalie Sprite. Recently returned to Australia after a three month Asialink residency in Indonesia, Natalie will be visiting the Sunshine Coast later this month to teach a weekend workshop in writing from the body. “I’m interesting in authenticity,” says Natalie.

“Powerful work comes when we stop trying to be who we think we should be, and begin to write from a deeper, quieter, wilder place.” Having spent more than 20 years writing, meditating and practicing yoga, Natalie has only recently brought the three disciplines together. “Writing from the body allows us to access the stories only we can tell. When we write from our core - the dangerous places, the wilder parts of ourselves - when we let that loose on the page, our writing really starts to sing.”

Spread over two days, the workshop will cover: • Creating work that has authenticity and power • Mindfulness, presence and the creative act • Writing from your senses to create immediacy and sensuality in your prose • Character and plot and how they intersect • Writing dialogue that reveals the core of your characters and moves the story along • Point of view and tense – what’s best for your story • Structure and plot – how tell your story for the

greatest impact • The art of seeing. Finding wonder in everyday moments and using this to make your writing sing. • Writing as ritual, how to build a writing practice. Writers will leave with a strong body of work, some new tools and a lightness with their own writing practice. Suitable for all levels of writing experience. Cost: $135 / $115. For bookings and more information phone 0434 967 367 or go to: https:// nataliesprite.com/workshops/

Tall Trees Exhibition seeks submissions from local Artists

Holy crap!

WELL known for its diverse creative offerings, the 2017 Tall Trees Art Festival is again inviting local artists to be a part of the community led event in the Noosa Hinterland. Held in the picturesque township of Cooran, the event aims to promote and bring together local artistic talent and provide a unique opportunity for artists to share their work in a public space and offer them for sale over the busy weekend to patrons from near and afar. Event organiser Mia Hacker says the high quality of work produced by local artists in the hinterland is exciting and a wide variety of artistic mediums is again expected to attract the attention of an artistically supportive community and event patrons. ‘It is a real pleasure for us to share in the enthusiasm for creative pursuits in this community and to offer local artists the opportunity to exhibit their work and we really enjoy curating the pieces through a subjective and sensitive process of deliberation as we seek to identify the artist’s in-

spiration’, she said. For the first time, this year’s event will take place at multiple venues in Cooran and be a real collaboration between local businesses and the community. The event’s opening night will occur on Friday night the 30th June at a ‘meet and greet’ with artists and continue until 5pm on Sunday 2nd July. Residents of Cooran and surrounding hinterland areas are encouraged to contribute and to share their creative pursuits as experiential, emerging, part-time or experienced artists. The closing date for Expressions of Interest is May 1st 2017 and artists of all creative mediums are encouraged to apply. Please register your interest via email to talltreesart@internode.on.net with your contact info and if possible, a sample photo of your artwork. Alternatively, you can contact Mia Hacker on 0437 721 966. Visit Tall Trees Art Exhibition on Facebook for more details. By Jacqueline Bazzo

Social ballroom dancing Jeff White snapped this pic on the Thursday we got all the rain from Cyclone Debbie. The open pit at the pump station at the bottom of Pearsons Road was spewing out raw sewage and toilet paper. He said he reported it to Unity Water but was told this was always going to happen when we got big floods. Ewww!

IT was great to be out and about for the Women’s Invitation Day at Cooroy Golf Club on Tuesday 4 April after the cabin fever caused by Cyclone Debbie. Although numbers were disappointing, those who participated had a great time with very good weather. The day was generously sponsored by Cooroy Supa IGA. Many thanks to them and to all those who supported the club in organising the day, setting up, supplying morning tea, donating prizes for the raffle, selling tickets, etc. The winners of vouchers from Cooroy Supa IGA were Helen Coogan from Cooroy and Yoey Coogan from Gympie, a formidable mother and daughter team. Runners-up were Lee Boyle from Caloundra and Eve Hunt from Cooroy who also received Cooroy Supa IGA vouchers.
