Colony driving residents batty BY ALEX PURCELL

FLYING foxes roosting behind Cooroy’s aged care facility, Kabara, are causing angst for in-care residents and neighbours. NoosaCare Chief Operating Officer Jamie Oakley said the colony moved in almost two months ago creating an “unbearable amount of noise and smell” on a daily basis, and that there was nothing the business would be able to do about it. “They are right on our fence line and they are horrendously noisy and they stink," Mr Oakley said. "We had Noosa Council come out and they said there is nothing we can do. We can’t move them on. “They’ve obviously been displaced elsewhere, because we have been told they are a black or grey variety that doesn’t move around very much. So they are here to stay.” Mr Oakley said out of 81 residents, only two haven’t complained. “Majority of the residents find them distressing. In fact, the bats were raised at the last resident meeting, with many concerned about the noise and their droppings.” Concerned resident Lisa Lister, who lives nearby on Topaz Street, said that someone has to do something. “Bats have a right to be wherever they choose to nest and that’s probably true to some extent but I’m up at 4am in the morning because they start to squawk, and then they’re noisy all day until they fly off around 6.30pm," Ms Lister said. “They’re a bother to me

and yet I can run away from it during the day to work. The residents of Kabara can’t and the bats live right behind these poor people. “Someone needs to do something. "The two most vulnerable groups of people are our children and our elderly. “I’m for the environment but within reason. The bats don’t belong behind an aged care facility.” Noosa Council Acting Environmental Services Manager Shaun Walsh said flying foxes are an important and protected fauna species in the Noosa Biosphere. “Council's environment team is aware of the Cooroy colony and is in the process of visiting the site," Mr Walsh said. “Council does not currently have a management plan in place for this colony, but we have submitted a grant application to prepare a management plan as part of the recently closed funding round. The State recently funded management plans for colonies at Kin Kin and Wallace Park and Council looks forward to positive consideration by the State Government for this new flying fox colony.” Member for Nicklin Robert Skelton said some residents had raised concerns about the flying fox colony with him and he has been in touch with Noosa Council to see what they could do about it. “Under legislation, councils can manage these sites without the need for a permit from the Environment Department,” Mr Skelton said. A Department of Environment and Science spokesperson said they were

aware of the flying fox roost behind Kabara and had provided advice to Noosa shire council about ongoing management issues, including information to support the development and implementation of a flying fox roost management plan. “The Noosa shire council has an as-of-right authority to manage flying fox roosts in Urban Flying-Fox Management Areas, with management activities limited to non-lethal methods and carried out according to a strict code of practice. “This allows local governments to make roost management decisions that best meet the needs and expectations of their communities, without needing a permit from the Department.”

“Under its as-of-right authority, Council has a number of options at its disposal, including destroying a roost, driving flying foxes away from a roost, or moving flying foxes within a roost by using water sprinklers, floodlighting, or tree trimming, to create a ‘buffer’ between flying foxes and sensitive sites. “The Council is not compelled to exercise its as-of right-authority, and Noosa Shire Council has not notified DES that it intends to conduct as-of-right authority activities, or has a flying fox roost management plan in place for the Cooroy site.” Continued, page 2

Mr Oakley said that Council has engaged a specialist to come and see the colony, but he did not hold any hope of a solution being found. “The bats are half on our land and half on state land so again, Council says it is not their problem.” “We’ve been told that we can get in as close to our building as possible and remove foliage, but have to apply for a permit. “At our Tewantin facility, Carramar, we recently built a new building. We had to remove foliage on the property for the build and a few days beforehand a bat colony moved in. “We had to apply for a licence from Brisbane to move them on. It was very

costly and it was approved because we had these plans to build. But because we’re not building at Kabara, we can’t apply. “We’re between a rock and a hard place. We’d like to see them moved on in a way that is considerate to the flying foxes.” The DES spokesperson said that landowners who can demonstrate they were suffering economic loss or health or wellbeing impacts from flying foxes can apply to DES for a damage mitigation permit to manage them. “Members of the public can conduct low-impact activities at roosts according to the ‘Code of Practice’ such as mulching, mowing watering, or weeding under or near roost trees, minor trimming of roost trees, and

installation, maintenance and removal of infrastructure," they said. “Members of the public, corporate bodies such as schools, and body corporates, may also apply for a Flying Fox Roost Management Permit to manage flying fox roosts on their own properties under the code of practice." Operating outside of the code of practice was not authorised, and may have legal consequences. “Flying foxes play a vital role in dispersing seeds and pollinating flowering plants and are crucial to keeping native forests healthy," the spokesperson said. "Pollen sticks to their furry bodies and as they crawl from flower to flower, and fly from tree to tree, they pollinate the flowers and aid

in the production of honey. “They are protected animals under the Nature Conservation Act 1992, and it is an offence to deliberately take, injure, interfere with roosts, keep or use them without authorisation.” But for Mr Oakley and Ms Lister, the question is who is more important: flying foxes or our elderly? “Our aged should be a protected species too,” Ms

Lister said. DES is delivering a $2 million, four-year grant program to local councils to support the management of flying fox roosts. All councils are eligible to apply for grants. While Round Three of the program has recently closed, Mr Skelton said he would like to see Noosa Council put its hand up for the next round.

Reluctant soldier fights for recognition BY ALEX PURCELL HE calls himself a reluctant soldier because he went to a place he didn't want to go and did a job he didn’t want to do. For 11 years, Cooroy’s Allan Price served his country in a national service unit, helping with flood and fire relief in Australia before heading to Malaya during the Malayan Emergency, and later, Maralinga. But it was his time at Maralinga that cost him one of the most important things, his health. Today, Allan suffers from numerous health concerns. He believes they are the result of his time at Maralinga and the work he did there. And all he wants is recognition. “Years ago I went to the doctor and said I believe my health issues are because I served at Maralinga and he said, ‘What’s that?’” Maralinga, in western South Australia, was the site of nuclear tests by the British Government during the 1950s and 1960s. “I found myself in Maralinga in January 1960. Australians were the ground

troops, with the English controlling them. We were called the colonials and we were treated as such,” Allan said. Allan has signed three secrecy acts so he has to be careful about what he can and can’t say. “One time we were burying material. With equipment, we dug a hole and lined it with concrete. We put a big wooden crate in there and lined it with lead sheet and again with sheets of glass and we stood in that box in the pit, in shorts, boots and hat, and were handed boxes by some of the boffins, all of whom were wearing hot suits and respirators,” he said. “And me with my cheekiness said, ‘What are we handling? Why are you wearing hot suits and why aren’t we wearing something protective? And they said, ‘Just do as you’re told. You’re here to work, not ask questions’.” “I said, ‘I’m curious, what are we handling?’ and they said, ‘We’re in hot suits for the simple reason that if one of these boxes happens to fall, we can handle it without any problems.

Cooroy's Allan Price, pictured as a young soldier, is fighting for justice regarding ongoing health concerns he believes are the result of his time at Maralinga and the work he did there.

“I said, ‘So in other words, the material is hot?’ and they said, ‘Just do your work’.” “So we boxed it all up, put a sheet of glass across the top and puttied it up, and with a big sheet of lead soldered it all together, then put a wooden lid on the top and then covered it with concrete.” “What were they burying? Toothpicks? "Later on they made comment that over the years they never even buried anything at Maralinga. I have photographs of the burial pits.” Allan spent four months at

Maralinga and was present for six tests. “They claim there were 12 bombs. A bomb is something dropped from an aircraft or hung from a balloon. But there were quite a number of those pieces of apparatus where they left the casing off them, so that they couldn't call them a bomb. I wasn’t there for the big bombs, the ones that cause the big mushroom cloud. The big ones were equivalent to 50,000 tonnes of TNT. "The smaller ones, which were only equivalent to 50 tonnes or 100 tonnes, still make a big bang. But the

material wasn’t dispersed in such a large area. "The big bombs atomised everything, and put it up in a big cloud that was dispersed down the wind pattern. "The smaller ones didn’t atomise, but were reduced down to small pellets, the size of split peas and only dispersed over a 500m circumference area. "That was pure plutonium and cobalt and quite dangerous. We weren't told. "We had a number of safety talks but we didn’t really get the information necessary to practise self-preservation.” Allan said he first started making waves about Maralinga because of his health concerns. "We screamed long and loud to get recognition for our service so we could receive health benefits. "About eight years ago our service at Maralinga was recognised by John Howard. He gave us a medallion before the elections.” Allan's health concerns include leukemia, macular degeneration, arthritis and respiratory issues. Yet, as debilitating as they are, he is thankful that he is alive.

“With the Australian servicemen, Navy, Army, Airforce and civilian contractors, collectively there were around 50,000 who went there. Out of the many servicemen who were there, only about 300 are still alive. I touch wood that I am one of them. “We’re not looking for monetisation, but recognition and justice regarding our health. Allan said that he had had considerable trouble dealing with authorities regarding his service in Maralinga. “First they refused to accept I was even there. I had to produce three affidavits to eventually convince them,” he said. A spokesperson from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs said any veteran who had health concerns due to participation in British Nuclear Testing, including at Maralinga, should contact the Department of Veterans’ Affairs for support. The spokesperson said the Veteran Gold Card was available to ADF members and certain civilians who served at Maralinga if they were able to meet a range of criteria.

GemLife remains committed to its plans for a Cooroy resort LIFESTYLE resort developer, GemLife has advised it remains “committed” to fighting for approval for an over 50’s resort in Cooroy. At a recent meeting with GemLife planners, Cooroy Golf Club members were told that GemLife remained committed to the project. “Independent consultants have been assessing and reporting on the ecology of the creeks as seen by the tagging of trees,” their statement said. “GemLife have modified their footprint to accommodate an increased setback to the northern end of the project and are addressing issues raised by the inde-

pendent experts.” Noosa Council said that GemLife has advised Council of these changes. “The applicant has advised that they intend to make minor changes to the proposed site layout, including increasing the development’s set back to the waterway - and will be filing these changes with the Planning & Environment Court in the next few weeks.” Noosa Council refused GemLife’s application for a retirement resort on land next to the Cooroy Golf Club last year. GemLife then engaged a legal team in its fight to appeal the decision.

As part of the development proposal, GemLife had committed to deliver to the Cooroy Golf Club a new golf house, a pro shop, golf buggy storage for 40 carts, a new sealed 100 space car park, a new entry road and course improvements as well as 246 new golf memberships. At the recent meeting, Cooroy Golf Club members were assured that the proposed benefits to the Club were still in place and the Club will be given an opportunity in the near future to review the revised footprint and plans. GemLife was contacted for comment.

Cooroy Rag to put in my two cents worth. The majority of the community condemn such driving behaviour and rightly so. To say it’s just “the lads out having some fun” is far from the truth. Several Friday nights ago “the lads were out having some fun” in Forest Acres and as shown in the pictures below, the fun turned to pain very quickly. This driving behaviour, on public roads, shows a complete contempt for community safety and to defend these hoons shows a similar

attitude to the hoons. Luckily, the three occupants of this vehicle survived with relatively minor injuries after allegedly narrowly missing an oncoming vehicle that was travelling in the opposite direction. The driver of the vehicle now faces serious police action in regard to this incident, which could have been a lot worse if someone had been killed or more seriously injured. Please continue to report hooning offences on Police Link 131 444 or the Hoon Hotline of 134 666.

It's not cool to be a hoon Sergeant Mal Scott Cooroy Police I’m no social media guru but apparently a recent post on a Cooroy social media site that depicted numerous burnout marks on Cooroy roads, certainly started an animated online discussion, with some all for hooning but most against. I’m all for free speech, and good on people for having a say, as long as it’s done in a thoughtful and respectful manner, and hopefully based on some semblance of fact. As mentioned, I’m not into the keyboard warrior stuff, so I thought I’d turn to the good old pages of the

Date is set for play AFTER more than a year of construction, the official opening of Cooroy’s multimillion dollar playground is planned to take place on Friday, May 6, 2022. At the time of printing, Noosa Council said that the official opening will be on this date but staff are still finalising the details. Construction of the playground began in April, 2021 and was due to be completed by December that year. However delays pushed the date out to March 2022. Then, after the severe weather event in February that saw the playground site receive approximately 1000mm of rain, Council further revised the completion schedule. Council said that the builders, Aspect Contractors, cleaned up the site following the flood event, including replacing landscaping where required, and were currently completing final construction

New supermarket proposal IN a first for Eumundi, a major supermarket is being proposed for the Hinterland town. Peregian Beach-based property developer Altum Property Group has lodged an application for a Material Change of Use with Sunshine Coast Council, to develop a $4 million “architecturally designed supermarket and specialty stores” on a 9915sqm site at 10 Memorial Drive, Eumundi. The site is out of town, past the Eumundi Pool, as Altum Property Group director Rob McCready said that there is insufficient developable land within the Eumundi local centre to accommodate the proposed development. “We believe the proposed design and location are sympathetic to and compatible with the existing character of Eumundi, while also offering substantial positive community benefits to local residents as well as the wider community,” Mr McCready said. The proposed development includes a 1472 sqm retail centre (consisting of a 1200sqm limited line supermarket) and 272 square metres of specialty retail as well as 76 car spaces. An approved service station development covers

the remaining 4,293 square metres. Fellow director Alex Rigby said the site’s location out of the town also ensured residents could access convenience goods without the congestion that “sometimes arises in Eumundi due to visitors to the Eumundi markets”. Mr McCready said residents of the Eumundi area currently needed to travel to either Yandina, Cooroy or Noosa to access supermarket facilities. “Retail supply is limited to the Eumundi local centre, which is primarily focused on day-trippers and visitors," he said. "As a result, residents in the identified trade area must travel a significant distance to access a supermarket or convenience-based speciality retail of any size or range.” Mr Rigby said the building design, created by local architecture firm Blackburne Jackson, interpreted and articulated a “localised response to Eumundi’s builtform character”. “The building will be low rise with a maximum height of about 6.5m and setback 6m from the street frontages, in a manner which minimises the building profile and limits height impacts," Mr Rigby said. “Substantial landscaping is

provided to the street frontages, which will assist in softening the development and contribute to the entry statement into town.” A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson said Council received an application on 24 February 2022 for a shopping centre at 10 Memorial Drive, Eumundi. “The impact assessable application will be assessed on its merits and will include public notification before a decision is made on the matter,” the spokesperson said. Ratepayers are able to access application details to stay informed or make a submission or comment on the application through the website Development.i. If approved, construction of the supermarket and specialty stores will take about a year. “The development will generate additional local employment opportunities, with the construction costs anticipated to be in the order of $4 million over a 12-month build, while the operation of the supermarket and retail stores would generate employment demand of approximately 44 direct employment opportunities and 10-12 indirect employment opportunities,” Mr McCready said.

Fresh track for King of the Mountain 2022 AFTER changes to last year's King of the Mountain, there is another significant change to the 2022 challenge. King Of The Mountain Chairperson Heather Manders said that due to changes required by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, the track would be changing. "The King of the Mountain races and the general public are no longer able to use the trail between the base of the mountain and where the metal stairs begin,” Heather said. "This decision was made to protect the mountain due to severe erosion that was happening to that part of the track. "The new course is 5.2km long and has more than 390m of vertical climbing. For anyone who raced the old course and knew how tough it was, well, the new course is even tougher." The other change is to the start. Instead of starting at the old ANZ bank, as it has done for many years, the mountain challenge will begin from the start of Hospital Street, opposite Pomona Post Office. "The race will head along the street, then into the bush near the Scout Hall as usual. Instead of scrambling up the path at the bottom of Noosa Trail Network 4, runners will follow the trail to the right around the bottom of the mountain, to the track on Jampot Creek Road," Heather said. "From here they will wind up to where they would have entered the trail, at the bottom of the first set of metal steps and proceed as they used to." The day will also feature the Prince & Princess Race, the Mountain Bike Ride, car display, animal farm, pony rides and music on the main stage. On the King of the

Mountain weekend, other community groups will host the Pomona Markets, Art In The Paddock, art exhibitions and silent movies. "Last year allowed us to change the format of the day from a festival to an event that focuses on what KOM is all about, runners tackling the mountain, witnessed by those who understand the purity of the challenge," Heather said. The 43rd annual King of the Mountain event will be held on Sunday 24 July 2022, and is a project of the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club. For more information, visit: https://kingofthemountain. com.au/ INTERESTING RACE FACTS: • The race runs from the centre of Pomona township, past streets crowded with wellwishers and supporters, then heads ‘bush’ towards the mountain. • It covers a distance of

5.2km race to the top of the mountain and back. The runners commence climbing a set of low hills before confronting the mountain. The track up the mountain is little more than a goat track, with parts now modified with steps. In some places, it is only wide enough for one or two runners. The mountain provides a steep, almost 45 degree climb. The return down the mountain requires strength, agility, a good sense of balance, and an immunity to fear. Entrants in the King of the Mountain come from all over Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Rim and the United Kingdom. The race has eight categories: Male Open, Female Open, Male Veteran, Female Veteran, Male Masters, Female Masters, Male Junior and Female Junior.

FROM the sea to the land, and into the hot houses, Jeffrey Norman Von Blanckensee certainly left few stones unturned in his 72 years. Jeffrey, who traces his history back to one of Pomona's first settler families, died on March 28. He is survived by his wife, Delmae, and children, Tanya, Kara and Dale. Born on the November 11, 1949, Jeffery grew up on Elizabeth Street in Noosaville. He attended Tewantin State School and Noosa District State High School. After school, Jeffrey went to Brisbane to build boats at Bulimba, before moving north and finishing his trade at the Maryborough Boat Builder. Delmae said Jeffrey once rolled a Rick Morgan Boat off the sandblow at Noosa, and it took them 12 hours to swim to shore. “He worked with his father and brother on a prawn/spanner crab trawler on Noosa River, then on the trawler for years until we built our own boat,” she said.

The couple built the Delta Dawn FRMF, which was later bought out by the government. In 1987, when Jeffrey was working as a senior linesman for Telstra all over Queensland, he broke his hip and femur as well as receiving other debilitating injuries in a workplace accident. Delmae said that in 1995 they found their own piece of heaven in the form of a block of land at Cooroibah, and built on it a few years later. “This was his dream - Jeff's and my paradise," she said. "We then grew gerberas for 17 years. "We built three hothouses and had 6500 plants. "We worked tirelessly on this including many weekend markets in the area, such as Yandina, Maroochydore and Noosa.” Dalmae said that while they were private people, they made friends for life over the years. “Rest in peace my darling, my soul mate," she said. I will always walk with you by my side, hand in hand.”

CHEF Matt Golinski recently clocked up 295km, on foot - running the equivalent of seven marathons. His partner Erin Yarwood said that Matt set himself a challenge in February to run 10km every day for the month. “Matt loves to set himself good challenges, and always sticks to them! February’s challenge was to run 10km every day.” That’s a whopping 280km! “But….while Matt was out on one of his 10km runs earlier in February, he was thinking and went ‘gee… if I run 295kms… that will be equivalent to seven marathons in the month.’” Matt is pictured above running up the driveway of their Pomona home on his “final hurrah”.

Pub takes a break but will come back in better shape KIN Kin’s only watering hole is now closed for major renovations. After purchasing the Country Life Hotel in May, 2021, the owners have suspended normal trading hours to embark on renovations to the main building. It is expected that renovations will last several months. “During this period, we will be announcing occasional opening times and a few pop-up dining events to maintain some form of a pub offering in Kin Kin while we undergo these essential works,” the owners said in a statement. The renovations will be focused on restoring the original heritage hotel back to its former glory. “We will be making repairs to the verandah, using local native hardwoods just as it was constructed in 1914. "We will re-instate the bar in the main building, with the historical memorabilia intact. "The rooms upstairs will be relaunched with a similar heritage plan.” The news received an outpouring of support on Facebook from fans and

past users of the pub. Margaret Leggett said: “So wonderful to hear that our dream to preserve this historic pub will be carried on. Terry and I were the owners from 1983 until 1989, and yes we had floods and a tornado, but met some of the best characters you could ever meet! "We have nothing but fun, loving memories of our Nik Nik days! "Not sure if Shelly is still working there, but she worked for us as well! "I do not know if you are aware that it was the Country Life, which that was the first massive portrait you saw in the People's Pavilion during the Expo in Brisbane all those years ago!” Another post from Michelle Jade praised the venue for its communications: “Thanks for letting us know! "We’ve been driving past regularly when travelling to or from our block in Wolvi and waiting for it to reopen. "A few weeks ago we discovered it was! "Such an amazing atmosphere and beautiful setting. We look forward

to its grand reopening and stopping by more often.” Those sentiments were backed by Stefanie Davis, who said she looked "forward to seeing it all done up.” Keisha Sunderland said: “Our favourite pub on the Coast! Look forward to the re-open. You have done an amazing job!” The owners said they also received a “tremendous show of support” for the interim pub garden program that ran during the summer months. “It has been an invaluable learning experience for us to assess how we will best renovate the pub to protect from future flooding events, and how to orientate our future trading program to become a more family friendly offering with great food, local ambience, and a place to gather with other members of the community, while maintaining the rural identity of Kin Kin.” For updates on upcoming dining events, opening hours, and renovation news, locals can subscribe to the pub’s email mailing list by visting countrylifehotel.com. au/.

FREE TWO WEEK HEARING TECHNOLOGY TRIAL WORLD-LEADING Danish hearing devices are proving popular for those requiring enhanced communication. Compared with previous technology, these devices have been designed for quicker acceptance. And offer a more realistic listening experience. They fit comfortably. And are also less noticeable. They shift you into a world of increased clarity. A world where you better

understand what is said. And a world where you’re more aware of your surroundings. They enhance your hearing on the phone. Voices come through smoother and clearer. Everyone can watch TV at a similar volume. You can set the TV to the level others prefer and better follow what’s said. Soft sounds are more audible. So you’ll improve your understanding of people who speak soft-

ly. As well as pick up the sound of footsteps from a greater distance. Loud noises receive less focus. So your hearing sounds as comfortable as possible. People will find it easier to talk to you. You’ll better understand what they say. So you can join in on more conversations. The technology is engineered to detect background sounds and transition a portion of them to where they belong

— in the background. Less background noise makes gatherings more enjoyable, as your listening effort is decreased. All sounds are processed automatically, so you don’t have to fiddle or press any buttons. Better still, they can be easily recharged overnight. In summary, the technology helps you better connect to the world around you. And with additional speech clarity and reduced

listening effort, your quality of life will likely improve. Some people will experience difficulties sooner, but everybody’s hearing ability degenerates naturally over time. Research confirms that the sooner you seek treatment, the better your results will be. This is because sound stimulation preserves the hearing part of your brain, keeping it active. So, if you feel you miss a lot of sounds, it’s time to

COOROY Golf Club president Terri Cairns, pictured right, and club manager Wayne Patston have been overwhelmed by the support of local businesses for the club's fundraising raffle. Tickets are on sale now at the club and the winners will be drawn on Saturday, April 23 between 3pm and 5pm. Wayne said all money raised from the raffle would be put toward fixing the damage to the course caused by recent flooding. Donations, prizes or vouchers are still being accepted at the clubhouse.

Flood damage more than cleaning up and moving on THE flood clean-up might be over but now the real work begins. Suicide Prevention in Local Communities Hinterland and Sunshine Coast Community Development Worker Ben Burns said the response to the floods had been to “clean up and move on” but this could cause problems down the track. “I'm hearing a lot of stories about tough Aussie grit, of people cleaning up after the floods and starting again. After all, what else can we do? “Although this ability to bounce back is commendable, if we don't acknowledge the harm we have experienced and spend time tending to the heartbreak, we may cause unintended harm down the track.” Ben said when we experience traumatic events

like flooding, it was “very destabilising” and there was every reason we may be feeling unsteady and shaken up. “Now is a good time to allow yourself to grieve, to acknowledge the heartache of the losses and not be tempted to move on too soon," he said. “Let's clean the wound and give it a chance to breathe before we stick the Band-Aid on and get going again.” Ben said they had noticed there was also the temptation to “minimise our own experiences because others have it worse”. “It’s important to validate each of our experiences and acknowledge, rather than suppress the impact of these events on each of us, no matter how small.” To help, Ben and The Suicide Prevention program are hosting suicide

prevention training in Kenilworth. “We're hosting SafeTALK training on Saturday, 28 May, from 2pm to 5.30pm at the Kac Shack in Kenilworth, with a barbecue afterwards. “This training will increase confidence talking with and helping someone thinking of suicide. If you'd like to learn practical skills to make a difference in your community, please consider booking.” Ben said the Cooroy Working Group would also be working towards hosting another Barbed Wire BBQ or another similar event later in the year. BY GRAEME WILSON IF you specialise in leaving your gift buying until the last minute, then the Noosa District Orchid and Foliage Society has you covered. The Society’s Annual Mother’s Day Show will be on May 6 and 7 in Cooroy’s CWA Hall, with members joined by commercial growers, to display and sell hundreds of orchids. Society President, Dave Lyons, said up to 80 members would have flowers on show for judging and sale, with major local sellers, Robertson Orchids and Darryl Banks Orchids, stocked up for the expected rush of buyers. Mr Lyons said the show also served as a membership drive for the Society, with current members keen to pass on “the bug” to newcomers. “We encourage people to get the bug,” he said. “There will be a couple of members floating around on the day to give guidance and tips to anyone buying a plant.” Mr Lyons said orchids were not fragile plants, but without such guidance they could be killed with kindness. “They’re easy to kill and we’ve all killed them, but if you look after them properly, they can last a long, long time. They can continue to grow and grow for years.” Plants usually flower once a year, but can flower two or three times, with some of the flowers lasting up to three months, while others will only display their full glory for a couple of days. The time of year that they flower can vary, but Mr Lyons said that for each plant, it was generally the same time of the year “plus or minus a couple of weeks”. With a background as

an agricultural chemist, and an associated love of agronomy, Mr Lyons himself caught the “orchid bug” after being presented with a spectacular plant as a gift for his appearance as a guest speaker. “It was a Dancing Lady and must have had about 100 flowers on it,” he said. “I then spent about $200 on about 20 plants and after that I caught “the bug”. It’s a “good bug” to have. “It’s a great sense of achievement taking orchids from a small size into something quite spectacular. And everyone can do it.” There will be many varieties of orchids on display at the Mother’s Day Show, with judges looking for excellence in shape, colour, stem arrangement, and symmetry. Buyers on the other hand, are more likely to snap up a plant that simply catches their eye. “It’s amazing – people come in, see orchids and grab them irrespective of the variety or price – it’s incredible,” Mr Lyons said. The Noosa Orchid and Foliage Society promotes itself as a group of likeminded people, learning to grow orchids, fostering

friendship and promoting conservation of orchids. Members, from as far north as Gympie and as far south as Beerwah, include “some experts, some fairly knowledgeable growers and some real novices”. Mr Lyons, who has about 500 plants himself, said that the common thread was a love for these beautiful plants and a desire to share enthusiasm. “We normally pair new members with someone experienced to help them with any problems and to build their knowledge,” he said. Mr Lyons said that many of the new growers were a bit shy about bringing along their orchids to shows, but a significant increase in prize money this year would hopefully encourage them to have a go. As well as the Mother’s Day Show, from 8.30am4pm on May 6 and 8.30am2.30pm on May 7, the Society hosts an annual Spring Show in the Cooroy Memorial Hall. This year it is on September 16 and 17. WHAT started out as a sweet idea is blossoming into something much more in a beautiful Eudlo garden setting. Since the launch of her Rosebed & Finch food business in 2017, Cheryse Healy has been on a self-proclaimed mission to produce the most beautiful, delicious and natural fare on the Sunshine Coast. The original focus was on creating healthy cakes and sweet treats but more recently there’s been expansion into weekly preprepared vegan and glutenfree meals for a growing clientele around the Coast. And while food production remains key, there’s a new desire to share the little oasis Cheryse has created with husband Rhys in the front yard of their Rosebed Street home. Easter Sunday will mark the official launch of Rosebed & Finch’s community garden, where locals will be encouraged to visit and share in seasonal

produce grown there and also take the chance to plant their own seedlings and join in community composting and recycling. “I’m hoping it will become a community hub,” Cheryse said. “It’s such a safe space for young families to come to.” For the 10 months leading up to its closure last Christmas Eve, the garden area was home to a popular café supplied by Rosebed & Finch’s adjacent cottage kitchen, which produces its sweet treats for selected wholesale outlets, plus the weekly pre-prepared meals. But while the café was going from strength to strength, Cheryse was finding it increasingly difficult to maintain an acceptable work/life balance and something had to give. “The kitchen was originally going to be just the place to do the catering from but then we got a coffee machine and it turned into a café – which was great, but it was essentially like taking on a second business,” she said.

While it was a difficult decision to close the café, Cheryse said it was definitely the right decision. “I’m so much happier,” she said. “At the end of last year, I think I was at burnout. It was long hours and family balance was so out of whack.” With the café gone, Cheryse had more time to spend with Rhys and their two growing boys Franklin and Alfie, and it also brought the opportunity to launch the community garden in the now vacant space. “Because we’d put so much effort into the outside area, it just made sense to turn it into a community garden to give something back to the town we love,” she said. The area will be available to the public seven days a week, except for rare occasions when it is being hired out for birthday parties or family gatherings. While always part of the grand plan, the recent devastating floods proved the catalyst to move forward

with the community garden project. “It gave us a bit of a kick up the bum to start getting the community garden organised,” Cheryse said. “The soil was nice and soft to dig plants and it’s so nice to have the garden back to looking pretty.” “Looking pretty” also flows through to the food created, particularly the cakes and cookies lovingly decorated with organic flowers grown locally. “I’ve always been a creative person and it’s a creative outlet,” Cheryse said. “The fun part is the decorating.” Rosebed & Finch prides itself on supporting its local farmers, with Cheryse spending each Monday driving around the area to

source fresh produce from local farm gates. “They’re so passionate and so knowledgeable and it’s nice to drive around and meet the farmers,” she said. “They know what they’re talking about and it’s nice to build relationships. It’s good to see them every week.” With the available fresh produce ever-changing, the weekly menus are also constantly evolving. “I always like to bring in new meals each rotation but there are also favourites that we keep rotating through – our Thai Massaman Curry for example is hugely popular.” Other examples from the menu are Slowcooked Italian Ragu and Japanese Cabbage Pancakes. Saying cheers to 10 busy years at Wimmers WIMMERS and Cooroy Mountain Spring Water are two national brands that have helped put Cooroy on the map. Ten years ago, local family, the Lavins, bought Wimmers and Cooroy Mountain Spring Water out of receivership and through their business, Noosa Beverages they have continued to grow the household names. Manager Cailtin Lavin said the biggest thing they have done in that time is building a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Lake Macdonald. “It’s a 9000sqm building on the site of the PGA Brickworks," Caitlin said. We recycled as many of the brickwork materials as possible to build the warehouse.”

This warehouse is where Wimmers Premium Softdrinks are made, while Cooroy Mountain Spring Water is bottled from the source of the spring at a facility on Cooroy Mountain Road. “Wimmers is the carbonated line while Cooroy Mountain Spring Water is pure, still, spring water from Cooroy Mountain.” The family-run business supports locals and buys local as much as possible. “All of our staff are from Cooroy. Our sugar we buy locally from Bundaberg regardless of the price.” Noosa Beverages also supports numerous local charities and events. “We get hundreds of requests weekly for support and we sponsor or donate

to local events, charities, schools and groups. Sometimes it is with product and we either give a little or a lot.” The company are also for the environment and recycle as much as they can. “We are a premium product in everything we do, so the plastic is of a quality grade so we encourage purchasers to reuse them. “Every part of what we can’t use we donate. Our sugar bags we give to gardeners, the plastic lids to kindergartens. Everything we don’t use again we give away for other purposes to people.” To learn more about Noosa Beverages and Wimmers and Cooroy Mountain Spring Water visit: http://noosabeverages. com.au/.

exhibition is informed by societal and environmental concerns and is created as a “reaction to the control and repression of women through fashion, religion, language and societal norms. Recent events, in particular the Me Too movement, Grace Tame, and the rise of women in governance are slowly changing our society for the better,” McIntyre said. Utilising children’s play dolls and various

In so doing, McIntyre incites strength in numbers. Sunshine Coast Environmental Portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez said schoolaged students are encouraged to submit an artwork that realistically portrays an

Australian animal or plant. “When selecting their subject, students should consider why they chose the species, whether it’s threatened, if they have a connection with it and whether they have learnt anything new through the creative process,” Cr Suarez said. “Our aim is to help create a deeper connection and respect between children and their natural environment and we encourage all eligible students to enter.” There are three ages categories – 8 years and under; 13 years and under; and 19

years and under. The Wild HeART Student Art Prize is generously supported by Friends of Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens, Friends Regional Gallery Caloundra Inc., Wildlife Preservation Society of Qld - Sunshine Coast & Hinterland Inc. and Qld Wildlife Artists Society Inc. Four top artists share their talents at The Art Hub Prices are set to rise

Come in before prices rise! CERAMICS, jewellery, flowers, landscapes, and seascapes will be among the range of works on show at The Art Hub in Cooroy this month. Artists Ann Caporn, Norma Street, Susan Moore and Liz Crowe will bring their talents to the table, or the easel, to showcase their latest works across a range of mediums. For Ann Caporn, inspiration comes from the landscape, particularly when there's water in view, such as lake, dam or ocean. Selftaught, she paints in acrylics and oils. Norma Street is known for her flowers, landscapes and seascapes. She has recently been working on a

modern abstract approach to her painting that requires more texture and layers, creating a 3D perception that makes you feel are part of the scape of the painting and want to reach into it. Clay is the passion of Liz Crowe. The Canberra-based artist has a long standing passion for pottery and the work you can create using the technique. "Pottery is an ancient art form and humans have been creating with clay for thousands of years," Liz said. "Pottery has integrity, it is natural, enduring and honest." For Susan Moore, Liz's sister and fellow artist, jewellery is where she finds

her joy. While Susan has had a lifelong interest in drawing and design, once she discovered the craft of silver smithing she was hooked. Susan said she fell in love with the technical challenge and artistic possibilities of silver and other metals, and creating wearable art.

Dogs at heart of new Expo WHAT: A Dog's Life: Pet Expo

g n i n e p O

WHEN: Sunday, April 24, 8am-2pm WHERE: Tewantin Noosa Lions Park, Gympie Terrace, Noosaville COST: $5 per person, $15 per family. Supporting PTSD Dogs Australia

IF you dig your dog and want to meet a lot of other dog lovers and their four legged friends, then A Dog’s Life: Pet Expo to be held at Noosa River on Sunday, April 24, should be in your diary. The event, new for the river, aims to offer dog owners the chance to find everything that they need to keep their furry friends happy and healthy, with experts on offer to talk about nutrition, grooming, training, treats, accessories and more. There’s the chance to listen to educational speakers and panel discussions, watch working dogs in the showcase arena, and to let your pooch play in the doggie play zone and participate in doggy Picasso. The event will be

broadcast live from Noosa River by the Today Show, and will be officially opened by Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart, with live music by MC Andrea Kirwin. The family day is a celebration of the special bond between humans and their furry companions – a relationship that can save lives, as event organiser, Lea Bye, knows well. Lea’s father is a Vietnam war veteran who served two tours and was affected by PTSD and night terrors. “My family home was always filled with dogs,” Lea said. “I believe their calming presence helped save my dad.” When Lea heard PTSD Dogs Australia provides assistance dogs for free to veterans and first responders, she says organising the fundraising expo was a ‘no-brainer’. “I’m passionate about raising money for not-for-profits,

and because of my dad, PTSD Dogs Australia is a charity that’s close to my heart.” The event is being run in support of local Sunshine Coast charity PTSD Dogs Australia who rescue, rehabilitate, and train psychiatric PTSD assistance dogs for veterans and first responders who are suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as a result of their service to our community. All entry donations will go directly to this valuable community service. CEO, Founder and Pack Leader, Angie Weeks, says the charity, which has been matching rescue dogs to eligible clients (handlers) since 2018, has impacts that can be life-changing, and in some cases, even life-saving. Cooroy's Gymnastics team were in action recently at the Queensland State Championships in Chandler and sent through these amazing images of the boys in action. From top left - clockwise - Dean Chandler on Pommel, Lyam Chandler tackling the vault, Mackenze Jones in the middle of a floor rountine, and Finlay Jones staying strong on the Roman Rings.

IT'S a Wrap! Cooroy Gymnastics sent a team of five gymnasts to the Gymnastics Queensland’s 2022 Senior States at the start of April. The State event is over two days where gymnasts compete on the first day for the all around award and qualification to the apparatus finals. The Championships also are the qualification event for the Australian Gymnastics Championships which will be held in five weeks on the Gold Coast. Cooroy came away with two State Championships and impressive 12 medals including capturing a clean sweep of the podium in the level ten vault. Each gymnast did Cooroy proud coming home with at least one medal.

Placings for Day 1 Allaround: Level 7 Open: Mackenzie Jones 11th. Level 9 Open: Felix McWilliam 2nd. Level 10 Open: Finlay Jones 3rd Dean Chandler 6th Lyam Chandler 8th. Placings for Day 2 Apparatus Finals: Level 7 Open: Mackenzie Jones 3rd high bar Level 9 Open: Felix McWilliam 2nd high bar, 2nd pommel, 3rd floor. Level 10 Open: Dean Chandler 1st vault, floor 3rd. Lyam Chandler 2nd vault Finlay Jones 1st parallel bars, 3rd vault 3rd rings. Cooroy Gymnastic's Craig Jones said what made

the boys achievements so impressive was that each of them went into the competition with less than ideal preparation because of the many interruptions to their training schedule. "All but one were impacted by Covid and required to isolate - two were still feeling the impact of long-Covid," Mr Jones said. "Flooding also took out more training time, then there are the life commitments outside of training and competing. "Mac is in year 11 and Felix is in year 12, both are full time students, both work part time - with Mac even attending an outdoor education camp the week of the comp and commuting back into Cooroy to train those nights. "Dean is an apprentice plumber working fulltime. He backs up a day of physical

work with another 4 hours of training 5 days a week. "Lyam is in his 3rd year of a degree studying fulltime. Finlay coaches as well as studying fulltime in the second year of his degree. "Life outside of 20 hours of training a week is hectic for these boys. Yet somehow, each one balanced their load to arrive at this point." Cooroy Men's coach Greg Smythe was happy with the results. He said he was hoping to get to the national event without any interruptions to training and that even though the preparation for states was less than ideal, he was impressed that all of the club's level 9 and 10 boys were selected to the Queensland Team to compete at Nationals next month on the Gold Coast.

NOOSA District State High School Year 12 student leaders coordinated this year's World's Greatest Shave fundraising event held in the school hall on March 24. Two brave students opted to have all their hair shaved off to raise awareness and money for the Leukaemia Foundation. Local hairdresser and former NDSHS student Heidi Painter volunteered her services for the shave. “Was a pleasure helping out. Those kids were great doing what they did today,” Ms Painter said. Students and teachers donated money to support and watch participants have their heads shaved or hair coloured. All money raised from the event will be sent to the Leukaemia Foundation.

Posties deliver literacy

Enrol Now “Building Pathways to Success”

Kindergarten Prep Primary Secondary

The children were all ears when Australia Post's Chrissy Cummins and Jason Bedbrook dropped by to share the bilingual book Moli det bigibigi (Molly the Pig).

AUSTRALIA Post has put its stamp of approval on a new celebration of indigenous languages, with a Tewantin childcare centre receiving a special book reading to mark the program’s launch. Children at C&K Childcare Tewantin were visited last month by local Australia Post postal manager Chrissy Cummins and postie Jason Bedbrook, who introduced them to Moli det bigibigi (Molly the Pig), a bilingual story written in both Kriol and English and authored by Binjari woman Karen Manbulloo. Kriol is Australia’s most commonly spoken Aboriginal language today and the book reading aligned with the start of the United Nations’ Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032). It also underlines Australia Post’s ongoing support of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, which has seen more than 190,000 books

delivered to children in more than 325 remote indigenous communities since 2020. Australia Post Head of Community Nicky Tracey said she was excited the book was being shared directly with communities across the country, helping to introduce children and adults to the joy of Kriol. “Our partnership with the Indigenous Literacy Foundation helps to ensure children across Australia have access to quality books, and more than 40 per cent of these feature indigenous authors or illustrators,” Ms Tracey said. Australia Post National Indigenous Manager Barbara Sheehy said she was proud of the way the organisation’s community activities connected more Australians with First Nations culture. “This joyous and fun book, written by Karen – a proud Binjari woman – complements the overall

work we do towards reconciliation by connecting with others through language and storytelling,” Ms Sheehy said. Mrs Cummins said she was delighted to visit the childcare centre and share Moli det bigibigi (a fun story about a hungry piglet) with her local community. Moli det bigibigi is also available for $9.99 at participating outlets and online at auspost.com.au/ shop. Free bookmarks also allow readers to scan a QR code to watch a video of the author read the story, and view an animated version of the Binjari Buk mob’s illustrations. Binjari Buk is a group of Aboriginal women from the Northern Territory. For more information on Australia Post’s partnership with the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, visit auspost.com.au/literacy.

children are planning kindness missions for Emilie to complete in between her home school studies and her exploration of our beautiful country. The children are excited to hear about her adventures and kind deeds through messages and video chats along the way. Emilie's first mission is

to leave kindness notes at the towns that she and her family visit. The Kindness Club is VERY proud of Emilie! For more information about The Kindness Club or to share a kindness story, please contact Wendy at thekindnessclub@outlook. com Cooroy Rag, 13 April 2022 Page

Digestion & Dentures

your say

Frank Wilkie Noosa Deputy Mayor DIGESTION is extremely important for your health: Eating heathy, nutritious foods is the key to a health digestive system. It is also especially important to consider how we chew and break down food for proper absorption. Digestion begins in the mouth: Teeth break down foods and chewing your food thoroughly, along with saliva, releases enzymes in your stomach that help break down food particles, which your body converts to energy, Chewing comfort: Is often compromised for many people who wear dentures, and you may resort to eating softer foods. However, these foods are often high in fats and sugar, and lower in fibre. Without a diet that includes fibre, vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables and protein-rich meats, the result often leads to constipation, and insufficient nutrients being absorbed. Food particles that are not broken down properly can cause bacterial overgrowth in the colon, which can lead to bloating, constipation, and other digestive problems. Good fitting Precision Dentures will help reduce these digestive issues.

You need good teeth: To chew and digest food, with the upper and lower teeth meshing with precision. The pleasure of food: A common complaint from denture wearers is the frustration experienced when eating. This tends to complicate many situations since food is such a centrepiece of gatherings. From family dinners to lunch out with friends we tend to ‘gather together’ with food. Does your denture fit securely? When dentures do not fit securely, the pleasure of savouring foods is often accompanied by the fear of embarrassing slips or clicks. Yet, another repercussion of poor-fitting dentures exists: a compromised digestive system. Issues such as indigestion, heartburn, headaches and low energy or fatigue could occur. Your ability to eat: Missing teeth can also create difficulties in biting or chewing food. If your dentures are older than 5-6 years, it is time for an assessment to discuss the best options for your needs.

Flood recovery will take time

be completed as responsibly and quickly as possible.

The 150-metre long landslip on Black Mountain Road remains a source of frustration for residents in that community. Despite experts working as quickly and as carefully as possible to effectively repair the road, the time frame is estimated to be months, not days. The area has been stabilised to allow the directly affected residents access to their homes. Community development staff continue to work with residents to link them to support services and grants and to help ensure waste and other obligations are met. In the meantime, travel distance to Cooroy via the diversion route is now some 24 kms, compared with the former seven kms. Repair work will continue on the Middle Creek and Anderson’s road detour as will the geotechnical investigations preceding rehabilitation works that will

Human response

Community members made 600 disaster-related calls to Council staff who in turn made 250 welfare calls to affected residents at the height of the flooding. To gain support and advice, some 150 residents attended the 11 Recovery Outreach Meetings. About 270 people joined the Noosa Mud Army and made a great contribution to the clean-up. Council’s Community Recovery 2022 Floods web page has details about the clean-up, donations, health and wellbeing contacts, plus grants. We don’t always know what burdens our fellow community members carry, especially now, so a special thanks to the many who practice kindness daily. Lifeline is 131114

Damage worth millions affected the contractor rebuilding the Wahpunga Lane bridge at Kin Kin when flood water engulfed three excavators, a 20-tonne crane, an eight tonne roller, trailers, offices, sheds and other expensive, crucial equipment. The 245-280mm of rain that was predicted to fall over 72 hours was exceeded when 390mm dropped in a six-hour burst. This led to water levels 1.2m to 1.5m above road level at the bridge, and flooding across the wider region at a rate which surprised many. The rebuilding of Wahpunga Lane Bridge is subsequently halted and the restart date, while currently unknown, is being worked towards as rapidly as possible. Traffic will continue to be detoured via GympieKin Kin Road and Sister Tree Creek Road

election 2022

Battle for Wide Bay kicks off AT the time of going to print this edition, the Federal Election had not yet been officially called. Campaigning has already begun in Wide Bay though and voters so far have six candidates to vote for, including incumbent Llew O'Brien (LNP). The other five, are Craig Armstrong (Greens), Tracy Bennett (United Australia Party), Nathan Buckley (One Nation), Geoff Williams (Labor), and Andrea Newland (Informed Medical Options). The Cooroy Rag approached all candidates with the opportunity to introduce themselves to the community over the coming editions and Tracy Bennett was the only person to submit in time for publication. We will continue to follow the election over coming editions and hope to introduce more candidates along the way.

MEET THE CANDIDATE

Tracy Bennett (U.A.P.) Tracy Bennett moved to Queensland, Australia from the North of England in 2007, proudly becoming an Australian citizen in 2015. Tracy now lives in Cooran, part of the beautiful Noosa Hinterland with her husband, Max and their rescue dog, Chyna. "My career has been a diverse mix of business and industries, everything from small family-owned through to large global multinationals, but specialising in sales and marketing," Tracy said. ‘In 2020 life changed for me, along with many Australians, when the government began a campaign of fear and control against the very people whom they were elected to protect.

"The last two years have taught me a lot about myself and as a result I have decided to be the change I want to see in our country, by taking the decision to renounce my UK citizenship and relinquish my pension rights to fight for Aussie freedoms and those of our future generations. "Wide Bay is one of the original Federation seats and since 1901 has been held by only nine gentlemen. "I believe it's time for change. "Time to give an honest, caring, community-based woman an opportunity to represent the constituents of Wide Bay. "Let's put an end to career politicians who do not have our best interests at heart. "They have proved this to us over the last two years’. "The UAP are the only party with the people and the policies to save Australia. "Let this be the year when we the people vote for change and form new government’.

The dreaded Hoof abscesses!

With all this rain the hoof abscesses are a very common problem! How and why do horses get hoof abscesses? There are a few reasons: 1. When we go from dry weather conditions to wet, the hooves could be a bit cracked or have some separation, when the wet weather comes along mud and debris can then pack into these areas causing bacteria to form an infection/ abscess. 2. When we have continuous wet conditions the hoof sole becomes quite soft, and any sharp object or rock can bruise or penetrate the sole. Thin or flat soled horses suffer the most with this problem. 3. There are times when a horseshoe nail placed too close to or into the foots sensitive inner structures can introduce the bacteria thus creating an abscess. Why are abscesses so painful? The hoof is a hard capsule so when an infection or the puss forms inside of it, this creates a lot of pressure causing intense pain. Especially when they must walk around on it 24-7. In some cases, the horse will lay down trying to relieve the

pressure and pain. What can you do? Your vet or Farrier are the best to call. Depending on the severity of the abscess, pain/autoinflammatory medication should be given. In the meantime, if you cannot get them, start by cleaning your horse’s hoof and try to find at what point the horse has bruised of had a penetration. If you can see some swelling around the coronet of heal bulb this is most likely where the abscess is going to burst out, being the point of least resistance. In most cases once the abscess has been released the lameness will be gone just as when we pop a bit zit! If this is not the case you need to look at the sole of the hoof and scrape the soft sole away trying to find a black line or mark, this will be the bruised or injured area. You may need some hoof testers or a small hammer to pinpoint the most sensitive area. Once located scrape this spot out so that the puss, a black, brown, stinky substance can ooze out. Try not to make this too big as the hoof still needs to repair the hole and the bigger this is the longer and more likely more infection can occur. Once I have found and released the abscess what do I do? You should always have

antiseptic solution, poultice (animalintex) vet wrap, Elastoplast and good old silver tape in your horse’s medical kit. Clean the entire hoof with the antiseptic solution and put some into the hole if you have made one. Cut the poultice to size wet it and put it cotton side onto the sole. Wrap the entire hoof with the vet wrap up to the pastern. Wrap the Elastoplast over the vet wrap, not too tightly, and slice the Elastoplast in the front down to the coronet band to make it more comfortable and not too much pressure for the horse. If you have a boot that will fit over your wrapped hoof, put this on to protect your poulticed hoof dressing. If you do not have access to a boot, take your silver tape and wrap it around the hoof forming a waterproof covering and protection from the horse walking though the poultice too quickly. If you have wet muddy yards keep your horse in a dry stable or clean grassed area to help your poultice dressing last longer. Change this every 24 hours for the next three days until you have a clean poultice with no more puss like substances being drawn out. If your horse still has lameness or still looks to have an infection, please call your veterinarian.

Welcome to ‘dive right in’! We’re going to be talking all things water sports, starting today with kitefoiling, a quickly growing sport that combines hydrofoils and traditional kitesurfing. Feel free to stop here and go google what it is, don’t worry, I’ll wait. Kitefoiling is an extremely fast sport, professionals speeding across the water up to 80km/ hr. Whilst some just like to cruise around and enjoy the scenery, others prefer to partake in racing around a oddly shaped course defined by buoys in the after, much like traditional sailing classes. Over the past 3 or 4 years this discipline has grown incredibly fast, and is even going to be included in the 2024 Paris olympics. Suitable for all ages, genders and sizes, kitefoiling is a great way to stay active and social whilst being on the water and learning new things.
