Council says no to retirement village BY ALEX PURCELL NOOSA Council have refused the application for a retirement resort on land next to the Cooroy Golf Club. Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart said all councillors were unanimous in their decision to refuse the development application at a general meeting on March 18.

“Our decision protects the character of the hinterland and is in keeping with the Noosa Plan 2020,” Mayor Stewart said. Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie said the proposed development lies outside the urban boundary for the Noosa Planning Scheme, on land set aside for rural and open space recreation purposes.

“We place a very high value on open space, recreational lands and rural lands.” Councillors say the development would have resulted in a high density residential development outside the Urban Growth Boundary. Cooroy Golf Club secretary Andrew Dick told the Cooroy Rag that members

are disappointed with the decision. “The benefits to the Club would have been significant, not only for the members but also the non-member social players who make up over half the rounds played at the course. “The Club will continue to provide sporting activities for the members and the community but the missed

opportunity to improve the facilities and engage the wider community with a new clubhouse venue has been lost.” As part of the development proposal, GemLife had committed to deliver the Cooroy Golf Club a new golf house, pro shop, golf buggy storage for 40 carts, a new sealed 100 space car park, new entry

road and course improvements as well as 246 new golf memberships. The decision comes after Noosa Council agreed to a request by the developers to postpone its decision until March 18 to allow them time to make a case to councillors following Council Planning Staff’s recommendations to refuse the application.

Cooroy Anzac Day services

COOROY – EASTER 1910 BY LINDA SIVYER COOROY town was surveyed by Surveyor Wainwright in 1907 and the first sale of allotments took place in 1908. By 1910, Cooroy

consisted of three banks, two hotels, several houses and shops. This photo was taken at Easter 1910 from the Maple Street side of town looking towards the Railway Station.

Today, Cooroy is a thriving town and has grown considerably but it rests on the shoulders of those early settlers who were there before the town was gazetted. Belated Happy Easter!

BOUQUETS & BRICKBATS BOUQUET to the Cooroy RSL Sub Branch for all their planning, hard work and dedication to provide us with Anzac Day services this year. Lest we forget. BOUQUET to Wythes Real Estate for their innovative expo that featured so many local businesses. BOUQUETS to NoosaCare for this lovely Certificate of Celebration. Thank you! The Cooroy Rag team. BRICKBATS to the driver that nearly cleaned me up on the pedestrian cross-

ing on Maple Street. Lucky I stopped or I’d be dead!

COOROY Anzac Day services have been given the green light to go ahead this year. After being cancelled at the last minute in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub Branch Vice President Peter Watts said they are very pleased to be able to go ahead with this year’s events, starting with the dawn service. “The National Day of Remembrance will start with a dawn service at 4.55am at the War Memorial Cenotaph on Diamond Street, Cooroy. “To comply with Queensland Health’s COVID-safe requirements, there will be four entry points. At each point there will be hand sanitiser and a QR code. Anyone attending the dawn service will be required to use the QR code to check-in. “Attendees are encouraged to stay within their family groups and practise social distancing. During the dawn service, roads around the Cenotaph will be closed and local police will be on duty. Following the dawn service, a Gunfire Breakfast will be held at the Cooroy RSL Club. “The breakfast will start at 6am and cost $5 with all the food donated by local businesses. “The event will come under the RSL Club’s COVIDsafe plan with up to 350 people allowed in the facility.”

Then, gathering at the Cooroy Butter Factory at 10am, the parade will step off at 10.30am and make its way up Maple Street, which will be closed to traffic. “Starting with the vehicles carrying disabled vets, the Light Horse, Noosa Pipe Band, veterans and school students, the parade will make its way up to the roundabout before returning to finish outside the Memorial Hall RSL Club. After the street parade, a short service will be held in front of the Memorial Hall where the School Children that are carrying the Tablets with the names of our fallen will be handed back to the RSL Sub Branch Custodians for safe keeping. And for the first time in many years, Two Up will be played in the Cooroy Memorial Hall from 2pm to 5pm. “This event will also be covered under the RSL

Club’s COVID-safe plan.” After completing a 70 page COVID-safe plan for this year’s services, Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub Branch president Tricia Geelan said it is wonderful that they can go ahead. “It is great that we are back this year and so glad we can but if anyone is unwell please don’t attend.” As well as all the planning, the Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub Branch executives have been working hard on the War Memorial on Diamond Street. “We have done a lot of work on the gardens and have had a permanent dais, ship anchor and propellor, set up.” With such a huge amount of work put in for locals to be able to come and honour our soldiers both past and present, be sure to attend one of the Anzac Day services and remember them. Lest we forget. For further information call 5447 6131.

Circa. Photo: Steve Campbell Design

Old Circa building sells for $1.75m THE Circa building in Cooroy has sold at auction for $1,750,000. Colliers agent Jesse Howitt told the Cooroy Rag the buyer is a local investor who “will lease the property out initially but then plans to put his own new exciting concept in there”. More than 20 people attended a public auction on 26 March with five of those registered to make a bid on the day. “This result proves yet again that investors have

high levels of confidence in ‘railway towns’ across the Sunshine Coast and more specifically Cooroy,” Jesse said. The premises on 34 Maple Street were remodelled in 2018 from Madill Garage into Circa Cooroy, a commercial restaurant with a woodfired pizza oven, bar and two dining areas. After closing in 2019, Circa was for lease for a period of time before going on the market in mid-February.

KARA Harry isn’t one to be pushed around. The beautiful mum-ofthree and “true blue Cooroy local” is strong and vibrant. So when she was given a devastating terminal brain cancer diagnosis mid-last year, she didn’t let it defeat her. Instead, she defied it. Kara told the Cooroy Rag the diagnosis came as a complete shock after she went to see her GP because she had lost feeling and sensation on the left side of her face. “My GP thought it might have been Bell’s Palsy but sent me for an MRI, better to be safe than sorry. They asked me how I got to the radiologists’ and I said I drove. They told me I wouldn’t be driving home and I had to go straight to hospital. “From that moment forward, I went into hospital and from there I was admitted to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. I underwent neurosurgery for the large mass on my brain but unfortunately, six days later I was diagnosed with stage four glioblastoma and given an average of 15months to live.” Kara has since had a second lot of neurosurgery because of the tumour’s rapid growth, due to stress.

“People never underestimate the power of stress on your body especially when it already has a spot that is weakened.” Now, months later, Kara is fighting her stage four glioblastoma, naturally, and is feeling good. She said she chose a holistic approach to her treatment because she wants quality of life. “I did a lot of research and decided to take a different approach because the adverse reactions are next to none. And my last MRI results were really good and my doctor and the cancer support people were really happy.” But treating her cancer holistically, isn’t cheap. “It has been costing me $720 per week and that doesn’t include the herb protocol cost each week and I’m wanting to purchase the holistic device (frequency) energy bed, so I can heal in the comfort of my own home instead of being chauffeured two hours each way to Brisbane and with the bed, I can give others time on the frequency bed too, to generate an income.” The cost of the device is $15,000 and as the sole parent of two young children still in her care and

unable to work due to the cancer, Kara has organised a fundraiser. “I’m holding an event at the Cooroy RSL on May 15. “The entertainment is the absolutely fabulous SUPERSOAKERS and for those who haven’t heard them play, this is their chance, they are the best band on the Coast. “We also will be running raffles all throughout the night with many fabulous prizes to be won from jewellery, psychic readings, mower repair gift vouchers, tattoo or piercing vouchers, love crystal gift to massage vouchers and so much more.” Kara said if anyone would like to donate anything to-

wards the event to help support her to please contact Helen at the Cooroy RSL or herself. “I am so grateful to each and everyone that has donated and if they can’t I completely understand too. “Just come and support me by turning up on the night, have fun, dance the night away and be in the chance to win some fantastic prizes.” The event starts at 6pm with tickets available for purchase inside the door. All money raised will go towards Kara’s ongoing treatments, herbs, bills and living expenses. “I just have to keep going and rid myself of this thing and that would be a miracle but it is going to happen.”

Anzac Day

“No foreign - except for the Aussie” BY IAN WHISKER After 37 years of service in the RAAF, Air Commodore Ian Whisker AM retired in 1995. Now a member of Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub Branch, he reflects on his experiences with the US Air Force during the Vietnam War. IN 1969, the Australian government offered Australian fighter pilots to the Americans to fly in US Air Force (USAF) Squadrons in the Republic of Vietnam. This had advantages for both countries. For Australia, Mirage pilots gained combat experience, and for the USAF, it relieved pressure on their pilots, who in some cases were going back to the war in South East Asia for the second and third time. Between 1969 and 1971, four Australian Mirage pilots flew tours of about 12 months in American F-4 Phantom squadrons at Cam Rahn Bay and Phu Cat air bases. I was one of those pilots and flew 132 combat missions from Phu Cat air base between December 1970 and October 1971.

It was 11pm in the briefing room at Phu Cat Air Base in central Vietnam in 1971. I was one of eight aircrew sitting in the room waiting to listen to the intelligence and weather briefings before going on alert at midnight for our 12-hour shift. Our four F-4D Phantom aircraft were in concrete and steel shelters just a short run from the ‘alert shack’. The first two aircraft were loaded with 12 500-pound high explosive low-drag bombs each, and the second pair were each armed with six 500-pound high drag bombs and three napalm cans for targets that were close to friendly soldiers. A USAF intelligence officer, newly arrived at the base, entered the room, walked up to the lectern, and began his briefing. “This briefing is secret. No foreign,” the officer said. He looked at his audience of eight aircrew in flying suits and noticed that one was not wearing US rank insignia but rather Australian Squadron Leader blue stripes. One of the Americans explained that I was an

Australian on loan to the US Air Force and that I was also leading the first pair of aircraft on alert tonight. From then on, when an Australian was flying, that briefing officer started with “this briefing is secret; no foreign – except for the Aussie”. I was a member of the 480th Tactical Fighter Squadron, flying the F-4D Phantom aircraft along with about 40 American aircrew, pilots and weapon systems operators. The squadron flew mainly against targets in South Vietnam, with some missions into Laos and Cambodia. The other Phantom squadron on the base also had one Australian pilot, Flight Lieutenant Lindsay Naylor. After the briefings, we put on our anti-G suits and picked up our personal equipment – parachute harness, survival vest, gun belt, survival radios, helmet, knee pad, and briefing notes – and travelled by van first to maintenance to sign for the aircraft and then to the aircraft shelters. I did an external check

of the aircraft with the crew chief and then connected my parachute harness to the ejection seat in the front cockpit. The weapons systems operator did a check of the systems in the rear cockpit while I did the same in the front. After getting the aircraft checked and our personal equipment in place, we walked to the ‘alert shack’ about 50 meters away. The shack had a lounge area for relaxing and a blacked-out room with beds, however, when we slept, we were ready to fly, wearing flying boots and the anti-G suit. If we were ‘scrambled’ (dispatched on short notice) we had 15 minutes to get airborne. On many occasions, however, we sat out the 12 hours without a flight. Most of our missions were planned the day prior, and we knew the time of our take-off, and the general area of the target. Missions were usually controlled by an airborne forward air controller (FAC), normally an American, but occasionally an Australian. Bombing of some

Air Commodore Ian Whisker

targets was directed by precision radar controllers, especially at night, against known North Vietnamese bases in South Vietnam. The F-4D Phantom had many advantages over the Australian Mirage IIIO for the war in Vietnam. It could carry a larger weapons load, a greater variety of weapons, had greater endurance, and could be refuelled in the air. In 11 months’ flying with the USAF in Vietnam, I

carried 12 different types of weapons, and on each flight had a weapon load of about 3,000 kilos, 10,000 litres of fuel, and a take-off weight of about 25,000 kilos (almost twice the weight of a fully loaded Mirage IIIO). For his service in Vietnam, Ian was Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the US Distinguished Flying Cross with two Oak Leaf Clusters and the US Air Medal.

Photobombing Anzacs caught on film IF you have been the Cooroy RSL in the past few years, chances are you have seen this photo on the far wall of the building. But chances are you don’t know the back story. This photo was donated to the Cooroy RSL by Pomona local and Vietnam war veteran, Wasyl Malar. Waz told the Cooroy Rag he had been at an auction with a friend when he saw this photo. Unbeknown to him, his

friend bought it. “He presented it to me and said, ‘I saw you looking at this so I bought it for you’.” Waz said he took the photo home and hung it on his wall. But after a few weeks he decided it needed to be shared with the greater public. “I realised it was too precious to be hanging on my wall at home. It needed to be somewhere where everyone could see it. So I donated it to the Cooroy RSL.” This photo is a remark-

able one. On Sunday, January 10, 1915 the 11th Battalion contingent of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) crashed a photo on the steps of the Cheops Pyramid in Egypt. What was supposed to be a photoshoot for the officers of the battalion, the Aussies, with their sense of humour, all decided to join in. Sadly, two weeks later, on April 25 at Anzac Cove, 80 per cent of the soldiers in this photo would be killed in battle.

When you look closely at this photo you can see some of the stories captured before this tragic event. In the front row, behind the officers, are four diggers with their arms linked. They are a father and his three sons. On the top right, fourth row down, there is a young soldier not wearing a hat who is thought to have been only 14 to 16 years old. It is believed there were a number of young soldiers in this photo who lied about their

age to enlist. Also in this photo is a soldier who died a few days before. His comrades, deciding he was part of the battalion, dressed him accordingly

and propped him up for the photo. If you haven’t yet, head down to the Cooroy RSL and look at this photo close up and remember them.

President of the Military Historical Society of Australia [MHSA] Qld Division and Ridgewood resident IN 1909, the Australian Government offered a prize of £5,000 (approx. $1.5m today) to develop a flying machine for military service. Nobody won it but the idea was right. In 1912, the first flying machines were ordered from the Royal Aircraft Factory in England. A month later, a site was selected as a flying school at Point Cook in Victoria and two days later the government authorised the establishment of a flying squadron with four officers, seven warrant officers and sergeants and 32 mechanics. Military technology was ‘on the fly’. At the completion of flying training, as Australia did not have any aircraft, graduate pilots returned to their home units for a while and more young men were trained as pilots, observers and mechanics. From that beginning, some 3,700 would serve in the AFC during WW1. Australia was the only Dominion to raise an Air

Many lads from Cooroy and Gympie regions had enlisted in the Australian Light Horse, some even taking their own horses to war. And many of them, when given the opportunity, transferred to the AFC and the adventure of those early flying machines built of wood, canvas and wire. Party time for Cooroy’s newest centenarian COOROY resident Wilma (Billie) Ayles turned 100 on March 21. The new centenarian celebrated the occasion with 65 family and friends at Saw & Mill. Daughter Robyn Ayles said it was a wonderful day to celebrate a wonderful woman. “We want to compliment the fantastic customer service and the delicious food supplied by the Saw & Mill on Sunday for Mum’s 100th birthday. “Mum is an inspiration to her family of three daughters, nine grandchildren, 13 greatgrandchildren and one soon-to-be great-greatgrandchild (due at the beginning of April). “She has always said she has had a charmed life, it has certainly been amazing. “She is an inspiration to her family, always showing what can be achieved through hard work and determination.” Billie grew up on a cane farm in Ayr, North Queensland with her three sisters and one brother. “She rode to school on a horse, then bicycle and later as a pillion passenger on a motorbike with her

brother and siblings,” Robyn said. With the outbreak of WWII, Billie and her sister trained as morse code operators in Ayr before travelling to Brisbane to enlist. “This proved more difficult than expected but eventually Mum was enlisted and travelled to Melbourne for training and then to Townsville. “Being in the WAAAF was some of the best years of her life with friends and fun and feeling a part of the war effort. “During these years Mum relayed important messages from troops stationed further north to headquarters in the south.” Billie was transferred to Bowen where her role was communicating with the Catalinas (Flying Boats) that were stationed in Bowen. The RAAF recognised Billie’s contribution recently in their 100th year of service to Australia. All veterans turning 100 years old this year are being honoured with a plaque to commemorate this achievement. It was in Bowen that Billie met her husband-to-be Bill and they married in 1945.

“They became very successful tomato and small crop farmers in Bowen until 1980 when they retired to Caloundra. “During their years of farming they were able to assist in improving the packaging, transport, irrigation practices and storage of produce grown and transported from Bowen to southern markets.” Their community involvement extended beyond their business and Billie was very involved in the Uniting Church and the Guiding Movement throughout their years in Bowen and Caloundra. Billie was also an avid sports lover, playing tennis and golf and then bowls for years at the Caloundra Bowls Club. The ocean and beaches but especially boating were places Billie enjoyed for over 70 years. “Fishing and trips to the Barrier Reef were common in the early years but in the 1970s Mum and Dad discovered the joys of sailing in their 46’ Ketch Tawarri II and then Tambaran, a catamaran they brought to Mooloolaba when they retired. “Sailing the Queensland

Coast and many voyages to the Whitsundays were a highlight especially when joined by friends and family.” After her husband’s death in 1990, Billie continued her community involvement with Probus, the Caloundra Uniting Church, the Caloundra Bowls Club, Meals on Wheels and Trefoil. “She also found time to travel including self

drive holidays throughout England and travels throughout Europe, New Zealand and Australia.” Robyn said Billie has show her resilience throughout her life. “She was quarantined at five years old, alone, having contracted Diphtheria. “Then she experienced quarantine again last year when Kabara went into lock down to protect residents from Covid 19.

“She has lived through war and economic depression. “She has travelled the world, ridden horses and driven many different cars. She learned to communicate using Morse Code and then video chat on her iPad.” Residents of Kabara, where Billie lives, also celebrated her 100th birthday with her at a high tea on March 25. Happy birthday Billie!

Pie drive earns a good crust for charities

A street named... POMONA’S newest road, in a small subdivision off Pomona Reserve Street, has been officially named. A street sign for Trillers Road has now been erected. When asked the significance of the name, Noosa Council Heritage Coordinator Jane Harding told the Cooroy Rag that trillers are a group of passerine birds. “Naming of Council infrastructure, including roads, falls under the Noosa Council Naming of Roads, Parks, Community Infrastructure and Street Numbering Policy. “Among other principles, the policy calls for names that are relevant to Aus-

tralian - preferably local - history, flora, fauna, culture, landscape or physical characteristics. “In this case, a bird name was chosen. “The trillers are a group of passerine birds belonging to the cuckooshrike family Campephagidae, partially making up the genus Lalage. Their name comes from the loud trilling calls of the males. “There are about 12 species that usually exist in southern Asia and Australasia with a number of species in Pacific islands. “Several trillers including the varied triller and the white-winged triller, are found in the Noosa area.”

SEVERAL local bakeries jumped on board an annual pie drive last month to raise money for charities. More than 100 bakeries Australia-wide raised over $40,000 for Grab Life by the Balls and RizeUp during Pyne’s Pie Days. Organiser Shaun Pyne told the Cooroy Rag every bakery in Cooroy, Pomona and Tewantin participated in the drive, donating $1 from every pie sold on March 13 and 14. “We had 75 bakeries in Queensland participate including 34 on the Coast and every bakery in this area. “For locally owned businesses to put their hands in their pockets for charity during tough times...they are all amazing. “We didn’t have a great deal of time to organise this year’s event but we got it done and the result so far is awesome. We’ve raised $40,000 and I’m still waiting on 20 bakeries. “The idea was to raise money and make people aware that domestic violence isn’t tolerated and men’s mental health is real and let’s talk about it.” German Bakehouse Cafe’s Jacinta Ward said they loved being a part of

Pyne’s Pie Days. “The locals in Cooroy came together to support us and in turn support these wonderful charities. “Shaun Pyne does some amazing work supporting small bakeries like ours. We love his work and the work that has been put in to bring small business together. “Thank you Cooroy for the support and helping us to donate. We can’t wait for the event again next year,” Jacinta said. Pyne’s Pie Days will return next year, bigger and better. “We’re going to do it again next year, possibly in May, and it will be bigger and better,” Shaun said.

Many know Tewantin local Shaun for his Pyne’s Pie Reviews. Every Sunday, Shaun posts a review of a pie from a local bakery. “It all started in 2019 when we were travelling

and eating pies and blogging.“I have now done over 100 reviews and it is all about getting people out and supporting small businesses and making them aware, that being a baker is hard work.”

THE Cooroy Rag is celebrating more than 60 years in print...and more. Recently, the management team, welcomed two new staff members. Geoff Crockett, a media veteran with more than 20 years experienced working on local newspapers has brought a fresh look to the old Rag. Similarly, Cooroy-raised Jodi Brennan has brought a wealth of knowledge to the role of administration. The Cooroy Rag is very lucky to have these two

highly experienced professionals joining long-time sales rep Judy Painter and born and raised Cooroy editor, Alex Purcell. The community newspaper also welcomed a new committee, made up of many experienced locals, following an AGM last month. And, come May, the committee will have money to give away. As the only newspaper in Australia to give away all of its profits to the community, the Cooroy Rag is truly

one of a kind. And this is only made possible thanks to the support of those who advertise in the paper. Their support not only pays to produce the paper, it also funds the grants the Cooroy Rag is able to make back to the local community. Since 2000, those grants total close to a million dollars. Applications for funding are open to anyone and submissions can be made to the committee for consideration by emailing admin@cooroyrag.com.au

The not-for-profit event run for the community, by the community, is happening on 17 July from 9am4pm in Kandanga. Festival coordinator and Save the Mary River Coordinating Group Inc President, Glenda Pickersgill said given the uncertainty around changing Covid-19 restrictions, the decision to go ahead this year with the festival was not an easy

one.“We plan to make this a COVID-safe event so there will be a number of changes to make this happen.” The theme this year will be around three R’s – Responsible River Recreation – Leave no trace. Glenda said they want to build on the awareness, appreciation and respect for “our natural and cultural heritage around the Mary River”. “This river is very special

to our communities and it is important that we all, young and old, share and learn how to care for such an important asset in our environment.” Glenda said they are welcoming anyone with creative ideas to join in the next planning meeting being held on Thursday 25 March at 5pm Kandanga Community Reserve. Hearing aid manufacturer Oticon, leapfrogging the rest of the pack

PICTURED ABOVE: Hans Demant, the founder of Oticon, was highly driven to help his hearing-impaired wife.

OTICON are known for the best quality sound, reliability, and ease-of-use throughout the world^. This is because they pioneer cutting-edge technology and never compromise on quality. Oticon’s mission began in 1904, when Hans Demant wanted to help his wife Camilla live a better life, unhindered by her hearing loss. Hans helped Camilla with one of the first electronic hearing aids in the world. From this foundation of care, Oticon grew with a passion to help people who needed hearing support.

Oticon works constantly toward their vision of a world where hearing loss has no limitation. Oticon innovate lifechanging technology – and if that means they need to challenge conventions, then that is what they do. At their scientific research center in Denmark, their discoveries show us how they can do things differently and develop the hearing technology of the future. Oticon think very much outside the square about hearing loss compared to many other manufacturers, by starting first instead

with the brain. This is because you actually hear with your brain – not with your ears. By understanding how the brain makes sense of sound, Oticon can help people more effectively with hearing aids. Moreover, they can understand how to protect the brain from hearing loss-related risks such as cognitive decline. Oticon’s innovations come from setting the bar higher and higher. While many other manufacturers settle for directional hearing, Oticon have pioneered

360° open sound. In fact, they always aim to achieve the impossible and like to challenge conventions to get there. Book into Acoustic Hearing Clinics to find out more about Oticon’s cutting-edge portfolio of technology. With 5 Sunshine Coast clinics and 1 Gympie clinic, there is a clinic close to you.

LONG-TIME local and well-known swimming teacher, Peppie Simpson has written and illustrated a series of children’s books. Peppie told the Cooroy Rag they are self-empowering books for young children aged three to six. “I wrote about all the things that I love as an adult, that relate to children, with a little magic to engage them. “Each book begins with ‘I believe I can…’ and there are six books in total: I Believe I Can Swim, I Believe in the Power of Rainbows, I Believe I Can Talk to Animals, I Believe I Can Dance on the Waves... “I Believe I Can Swim includes basic skills, but is set in a magical way to

activate a child to want to learn to swim. Like, when you learn to swim you can see a dolphin.” Peppie said the aim of the books is to change the words kids use when it comes to tackling something new or uncomfortable.

“Instead of using the words ‘I am scared’ or ‘I can’t do it’, I am changing them to ‘I am going to try’ and getting children used to the words ‘I believe I can’. “The books are about empowering young children in that beautiful state of learning about life without fears and resistance and showing them they can do anything. They are a little educational but they will interest any child.” Peppie is now considering the next steps for her six books, which are yet to be published. “I would like to get them published so the children can get hold of the books but I am not sure whether I should look for a publisher or self-publish.”

Since its begining in 1961, the Cooroy Rag has always been supported by the advertisers in our community. And today, it is because of those advertisers that the Cooroy Rag has money to give back to our community.

Off market sales as local property demand spikes MORE houses have sold than been listed in the past three months, according to data sourced by the Cooroy Rag from local real estate agents. From January to March, 2021 in Cooroy and surrounds, approximately 80 properties were listed and 96 properties sold. One real estate agent said they are selling properties before they are even listed as more “southerners” flock to the Coast. They believe it is still building and the market will only get busier. However, two others said the majority of their buyers are other locals who want to sell their home in town for a property in the hinterland or families upsizing to acreage. While one real estate agent said that some vendors are trying to gain a quick sale, this isn’t necessarily the best option. Selling before the property hits the market is appealing for many vendors, but they said the issue they then face is having nowhere to go and limiting their exposure to the broader market which means potentially not achieving the best sale price.

Pomona cafe on international TV Another agent said another factor influencing sales is “FOMO”. For many sellers it is the ‘fear of missing out’ on a house once they’ve sold and for buyers it is the FOMO on a new house for sale. Therefore buyers are happy to pay elevated prices for their new property. This is reality due to the number of buyers outweighing the sellers. One real estate agent said along with demand, prices have also increased. According to realestate.com.au, the median house price in Cooroy is now $630,000. As for rentals, in the past

three months, approximately 70 properties in Cooroy and surrounds have been leased with around six properties currently vacant and available. According to realestate.com.au the median rent per week, tenants are now paying $540 for a four-bedroomhouse. As you can see the ‘state of real estate’ is hectic to say the least in having to meet the varied demands of both buyers and sellers in such a fast-paced market. Hats off to all the local agents for all your hard work in keeping on top of a very challenging market!

POMONA’S Village Kitchen will feature on an international TV show. Filming for Season 4, Episode 12 of House Hunters International was in Pomona last month, following couple Rob and Hannah around while they hunted

for a home in the hinterland. Aussie Rob met Hannah while backpacking in England and 10 years later, he wanted to return home to the Queensland. Rob found a job in Pomona which brought them to the hinterland to begin their

house hunt. While house hunting, they take part in the King of The Mountain festival and watch the race up Mount Cooroora. The episode featuring Pomona is expected to air in Australia within a few months’ time.

Rumour has it... AFTER being on the market for more than $1m, rumour has it Kin Kin’s Country Life Hotel has sold. Reportedly, the new buyers are Noosa locals with

extensive hospitality experience, who have plans to turn the iconic pub it into a “destination”. It is believed the pub could close for extensive renovations. Watch this space...

Colourful collaboration on show IT’S unlikely you’ve missed it.The vibrant reds, yellows and black catch your eye and draw your attention to the Pomona Railway Station. This beautiful mural was painted by Peter Mulcahy, a Sunshine Coast Indigenous artist who has Mungaran Aboriginal Art. He worked with students from the Pomona State School to finalise the design. Now it can be seen from various spots in Pomona and by every visitor who travels the Queensland coast by train.

FROM outside looking in – the role of a volunteer on the Mary Valley Rattler is often assumed to be ‘just a free train ride’, yet it is so much more. An operational day begins at 4am as our workshop volunteers light up the engine in preparation for the arrival of the train crew. They grab a quick bite to eat before spending the next seven hours firing, shunting, and navigating the tracks of Mary Valley line. Our volunteer drivers, guards and fireman all have the love of trains pumping through their veins and the smiles from ear to ear are a constant testament to that fact. That ‘free’ ride for a Club Car volunteer is a busy one. The clock begins to tick and in a narrow window of time every table is dressed in linen cloths and rolled napkins. Flowers from our hundredyear-old garden adorn the table, along with a cool drink and cooler, all meticulously set out accompanied by a lunch menu and copy of the local community newspaper. Club Car being the VIP passenger experience, is often regarded as the ‘elite’ of the GE (guest experience) volunteer roles. Our Club Car guest experience volunteers need to have several finely tuned skills up their freshly ironed sleeves to deliver the very best of our Rattler on-board services. An RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) qualification is an absolute must and each volunteer on the Rattler is SARC certified. All our fleet of carriages have been refurbished to an exquisite standard by our workshop

volunteers. However, once back at the station, the GE volunteers ensure they remain that way from beginning to end of each service. After a three hour ride this volunteer role continues as each ensures discarded muffin bags, scone containers and downed coffee cups are disposed of before taking on the task of sanitizing and scrutinizing each seat ready to welcome a whole new day of excited Rattler travellers, and volunteers back on board. So next time you stop to wave at our beautiful train as she passes by, spare a thought for our dedicated team of wonderful volunteers. Our volunteers are the heart and soul of the Mary Valley Rattler and worth their weight in gold. We value each one for the dedication, skill, professionalism, and welcoming smiles they bring to their individual roles. At the end of every operational day, amongst the banter and excited chatter around the table in the Volley room, our volunteers are rewarded with a delicious lunch from our Rusty Rails Café Menu. The prestige of being accepted as a Mary Valley Rattler volunteer is a well-earnet one. Being not for profit, we are a registered volunteer organization. We welcome anyone to give us a call if considering joining our Rattler volunteer family. We have loads of fun and for many, it becomes just the life change they were looking for. Sounds like you? Emotional journey of development for students

FOR some students ‘growing up’ cannot come soon enough, but a very touching ceremony under gloomy skies at the Noosa River mouth stopped the clock, if just for a moment, and allowed deep reflection for both student and parent. The Year 9 students at Good Shepherd commence the Rite Journey program as part of their Christian Studies program. It is a program honouring the transition from young person to young adult and is a collective partnership between student, parent, teacher/mentor and broader College community. The official launch of the

program is the “Calling and Departure” ceremony, with close to 115 Year 9 students and their families attending. The ‘Calling’ encourages students to show gratitude for their childhood and calls them on their journey to young adulthood. The second component to the ceremony is the ‘Departure’, which involves parents, carers and teachers/mentors joining the students for an opportunity to learn, reflect and look forward. Program coordinator Nicole Drew said students and parents were able to connect through reflection of memories of significant events or items from the

child’s formative years. “Then, together as a family, the notion of transitioning from child to young

adult and what this process would challenge students to let go of or change was discussed over breakfast.”

The journey represents the pathway of learning and personal growth for the students.

Looking back on a year of bushfires, a pandemic and more

BY PERLE STONE, NDSHS HAPPY late New Year everyone! Finally, we have escaped what felt like an excruciating year. 2020 was full of unexpected, let

alone unwanted, surprises from COVID-19 to the Beirut explosion, that felt unbelievable to occur in our timeline. But what exactly happened in 2020? To begin the year of simply great, as early as 6 March, Australia faced horrendous bush fires known as “black summer”. These fires burnt an estimated 18.6 million hectares, destroyed over five thousand and nine hundred buildings and killed at least thirty-six peo-

ple. Unfortunately after the ‘black summer’ occurred, koalas have been under consideration as an official endangered species. Multiple charities opened across the world to help and save those in need. Everyone is aware of the infamous COVID-19 and the lock down the world went through on the behalf of everyone. I would like to say being able to stay home in pyjamas and doing online schooling was

the only fun part about being stuck at home. Other than that, it was awful. During 2020 Corona virus spread to over 200 countries and territories across the world, infecting up to 104 million people - all I know is that is a lot of masks. Lakers legend Kobe Bryant and ‘the black panther’ Chadwick Boseman unfortunately both died during 2020. Kobe died while in a helicopter crash with his daughter Gianna Bry-

ant on 26 January. The claw some Chadwick died due to his ongoing battle with colon cancer on 28 August. Rest in peace Kobe, Gianna and Chad. In August 2020, an explosion occurred at a warehouse at the port of the city of Beirut. It killed approximately two hundred and injured over seven thousand. This explosion left of three hundred thousand civilians homeless. 2020 was the year of hell.

Buddy bench says no way to bullies IN support of the National Day of Action against bullying and violence, Eden Private Hospital CEO Jo Munday and hospital social worker Judith Thomson gifted a Buddy Bench to the Noosa Christian College Primary students on Thursday, 25 March. The students and staff were invited to wear orange, the colour recognised for Bullying No Way National Day of Action. The bench will be placed under a tree in the playground with the aim to encourage student inclu-

sions and friendships in the playground. Eden Private Hospital is part of one of Australia’s largest mental health service providers (healthecare) and schoolyard bullying and positive mental health is a passion project of healthecare and Eden Private Hospital. On behalf of the Noosa Christian College community, we thank Eden Private Hospital and healthcare so much for coming to our school with this gift. We appreciate it very much.

A basketful of kindness for local families in need THE Easter Bunny had assistance from some special helpers this Easter. The Kindness Club children were more than happy to step in and help the furry little guy show kindness to others! The children prepared hampers of chocolate bunnies, Easter eggs, card games, and a snuggly plush toy, and then with the addition of love and best wishes, the hampers were sent on their way. These special surprise deliveries were made to local children and their families by our new friends at Cooroy

columns Great news for the hinterland Clare Stewart Noosa Mayor GREAT news for our hinterland. Noosa Council has ratified the Noosa Trail Network Masterplan. It sets out an exciting vision for a nationally significant trail network that links the coast to the hinterland and paves the way for new tourism opportunities. Having the masterplan will help Council to secure more funding from both the Federal and State Governments. Last year we received $1.6m in funding under a Local Economic Recovery Grant to get the ball rolling. That funding will improve the 9km Pomona to Cooran trail with better signage, trail definition and better access plus car parking, a shelter shed, bike racks and horse-riding facilities. The aim is to have this completed mid 2022, which will not only improve our trail network, but will provide construction jobs and boost our visitor numbers. Talking more about our hinterland region, Council continues to hold roundtable meetings with stakeholders and community advocates. We held another this month with members from hinterland community groups, Qld Police, Sandy Bolton MP, Council staff and officers from

Transport and Main Roads. I instigated these roundtables last August 2020 as we need to understand and work with our community at every level on this incredibly important issue. Only recently, after our last meeting, I called on Kin Kin Quarry operator Cordwell Resources requesting that they avoid truck movements near schools during school drop off and pick-up times. The request comes after Council issued another round of $27,000 fines for alleged breaches of the Quarry Management Plan, relating to truck movements. This takes the total in fines to $133,450 over a six-month period. Council continues to work with the community and residents to gather evidence for proposed legal action against the quarry operator and alongside Sandy Bolton MP who has written to the Premier and spoken out about this issue in Parliament, demanding further action for the safety of our residents. We are doing all we can to continue to stand for and with our hinterland community. As many of you may now know, Councillors were unanimous in the decision to refuse the GemLife Development in Cooroy recently. The decision is in keeping with the Noosa Plan 2021 and it protects the character of the hinterland. Council places a high value on open space land and rural land. The development proposed sat outside the urban boundary for the Noosa Planning Scheme on land set aside for rural and open space recreational purposes. Similarly the development was inconsistent with

the SEQ Regional Plan and contrary to State Planning Policy. The Short Stay Letting Local Law has been eagerly anticipated by many in our community. As of 9 April 2021, it is out for comment to the community and we are inviting all residents and stakeholders to have a say on a proposed local law to manage short-stay letting and home-hosted accommodation here in Noosa Shire. The proposed local law will help Council manage the impacts of short-stay let properties on residents and ensure owners who let their properties for short-stays are managing issues and dealing with complaints. The draft local law has been reworked since the consultation in 2019 by the previous council and changes reflect community and stakeholder feedback, legal advice, the new planning scheme and State Government input. The State Government has deferred its plans for a state-wide framework to manage short stay letting which is disappointing as the impacts of short stay letting on residential amenity continue to be an issue for some in our community. But now is an opportunity for you to have a say and tell us what you think. We want to hear from you, our community, so please do take the time to provide feedback via yoursay at www.noosa.qld.gov.au from 9 April 2021. Until next month, stay safe and may the blessings of our Easter period be with you and your loved ones, Clare.

Noosa Trail network masterplan on track Better signage, better access, more carparking, a shelter shed and more are on the list of upgrades planned for the 9km Pomona-to-Cooran Trail over the next 12 months. Mayor Clare Stewart said the masterplan, created by Tourism Noosa with funding from the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation, set out an exciting vision for the Trail which would be open in 2022. “It’s one that will deliver a nationally-significant trail network that links the coast to the hinterland and paves the way for new tourism opportunities,” she said. “The masterplan sets the scene for Noosa’s Trail Network to become a world class attraction in its own right, showcasing the Noosa Biosphere and its iconic destinations. “Having the masterplan finalised will also assist our efforts to secure state and federal support to fund the upgrades.” Mayor Stewart said last year the Queensland and Australian Governments had announced a $1.6million Local Economic Recovery Grant to get

the ball rolling on improving the network. “That investment will deliver improvements to the 9km Pomona-to-Cooran trail, including better signage, trail definition and better access, plus car parking, a shelter shed, bike racks and horse riding facilities,” the Mayor said. The trail upgrades are expected to generate an economic boost for the hinterland as materials and labour are needed to have the work done. “The now-funded first stage will create an estimated 15 construction jobs, and, once complete, is predicted to attract an additional 32,000 visitors to Noosa region,” the Mayor said. Environment and Sustainable Development Acting Director Anthony Dow said Council was now in the process of auditing the existing trails to check on their condition and look at opportunities to extend them. “We look foward to seeing locals and visitors enjoy the new facilities and upgrades on the Pomona-to-Cooran Trail in 2022,” Mr Dow said.

columns Happy birthday to the Cooroy Rag! Sandy Bolton State Member for Noosa 60 years of our Cooroy Rag. What an incredible achievement. Happy Birthday! It was fabulous to sneak back to share in the celebrations in between Parliament and travelling throughout regional Queensland for the public hearings on the Youth Justice Bill and catch up with some old buds at the same time. Thank you! Heavy haulage vehicles in our hinterland continue to be a priority, and we await response from Minister Scanlon regarding the issues surrounding the review process by environmental authorities. Multiple efforts continue including Council’s preparation for legal action. Design work has begun on the replacement Six Mile Bridge #7, with an expected completion date by late 2021 and construction scheduled to start in the first half of 2022. This project is now listed on Department of Transport & Main Roads website under ‘projects’ via www.tmr.qld.gov.au. Finally, we were able to obtain an update regarding the Cooroy intersection improvements consultation

begun over a year ago. TMR investigated both roundabouts and traffic signals as part of early planning for upgrades, and identified traffic signals as the preferred option. However the community favoured roundabouts. TMR advise they will re-engage with key stakeholders and the community when funding is available to progress this project. After meeting with State Planners during Parliament regarding legislation and our housing crisis, I look forward to updating stakeholders on progress at our next Housing Action Group meeting. In the meantime, if you know of anyone homeless, or at risk of this, please call the Homeless Hotline on 1800474753 or contact your MP, either Rob for the Nicklin electorate (5406 4100) or myself in Noosa (53193100). Maritime Safety QLD and Noosa Council have jointly selected the members of a new Noosa River Stakeholder Reference Group from submissions received during the recent Expressions of Interest. We look forward to the first meeting and subsequent improvements to many aspects of our river management, including those ‘gremlin’ moorings! Thank you to everyone who reported turtle hatchlings on Noosa North Shore recently. This resulted in prompt responses and some very happy youngsters making their way to the ocean! A timely reminder for anyone travelling on the beach, especially from Freshwater Lake track up to Double

Island Point, to go slow. It will be discussed at the next Teewah Cooloola Working Group as to how we can better protect during turtle seasons and was raised with the Minister for Environment during Question Time in Parliament. Changes to camp site bookings at Cooloola Recreation Area and number plate recognition cameras are some of the measures implemented as part of addressing poor and dangerous behaviours with more improvements to come, including dealing with those mobile blackspots. Working for Noosa Communities

Boost for recovery Llew O’Brien Federal Member for Wide Bay RECOVERY, whether from illness, adversity, or natural disaster, is never a quick process. It’s been almost 18 months since the bushfires that devastated parts of Noosa, and the Morrison Government remains committed to helping heal the scars those fires left on our environment and in our communities. As part of these recovery efforts, I was pleased to announce $149,750 for the Noosa Environmental Education Hub to run a bushfire recovery education program in three local schools and $29,952 for Noosa Integrated Catchment Association to rehabilitate parts of Girraween Nature Reserve. As we have seen recently with the snap lockdown in Brisbane, we are not yet out of the woods with COVID-19, and if Australia’s economic recovery is to remain on track, we must remain cautious and adhere to medical advice. People aged over 70, or with certain health conditions, are now eligible for the vaccine which is being rolled out to more than 4,000 general practices by

the end of April including in the Noosa area. To check your eligibility, or find your nearest practice providing vaccinations go to australia.gov.au or 1800 020 080. You may also be aware that I recently supported a motion for a Royal Commission into Veteran Suicides. Countless veterans have sacrificed their mental wellbeing to keep us safe, and we owe them, at the very least, our support in their recovery. With veterans twice as likely to take their own lives as the rest of us, there is clearly a significant problem that we must take action on. We need to examine how we can maintain the mental and physical wellbeing of veterans, including the provision of adequate funding for the services like advocacy and occupational therapy. I was also pleased to be appointed to the Select Committee into Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, which will examine a range of findings and reviews of the current mental health system in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2019 bushfires.

We have a wealth of experience in all things NDIS and have been recognised as providing the highest standard of Plan Management.

With Plan for Me you can choose how much involvement you would like in the process, you can leave it all to us or engage with us every step of the way. It’s all about your choice and your control. VOLUNTEERING can be so rewarding and a whole lot of fun! Just ask Irene Bell who is a regular at Kabara NoosaCare. Every week, Irene visits the residents with her Lolly Trolly, and understandably is greeted with smiling faces as she supplies their sweet treats and other goodies. This is just one of the activities that the volunteers get involved with. Crosswords, bingo, painting, colouring in, newspaper reading, bus trips (including shopping) and craft activities, just to name a few. Special events on the calendar are always celebrated with high teas, barbeques, etc. The library is always

well stocked, but residents can receive their own supply of books monthly, courtesy of the wonderful staff at the Cooroy Library. Kabara also boasts their own coffee shops, which are run by volunteers. COVID-19 hit aged care particularly hard, but entertainers are gradually returning, much to the enjoyment of the residents. Over the past few years, the residents have looked forward to the fortnightly visits by the Grade 3 students from Noosa Christian College. They too will be back soon. DESPITE 2020 being a difficult year for everyone, with restrictions imposed upon us, our local RSL Sub Branch continued to offer support to our members as well as members of the local community wherever we could. Our welfare and transport teams were kept busy supporting ex service personnel, service widows and those in the area reliant on public transport. 17840km were travelled and in excess of 900 volunteer driver hours logged. Some 260 trips were made to local hospitals, medical centres, dental surgeries, optometrists and physiotherapists. Members and their families were called weekly for well-being checks with over 2000 phone calls made. Visits to members

at home, in hospital and aged care were strongly curtailed but we still offered the support wherever possible. When allowed, weekly trips to the local shopping centres resumed with some 580 grateful people making use of this service. Support was offered to those experiencing financial difficulties and $2500 in donations were made. Lawns were mown and assistance was given to those who were unable to accomplish small tasks around their home. Highlights of our year were: • The presentation of 75 Year Medallions to Joyce Cunningham, Elsie Dalzell, Max Biddulph, Bill Brown, Brian Cunnington and Gordon Edwards. These six

ON 20 March, many friends, artists and supporters gathered to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the gallery. The gallery is made up of original buildings for the Pomona Rail Station. When Queensland Rail no longer wanted these buildings, Robyn Jones had a vision for them. She worked with the Hon. Alex-

Linzi Ward displayed a range of mosaics in glass, ceramic and shells, and a beautiful statue of “Lady Celeste”. Of special note was the display of clothing made by residents for “Uniforms 4 Kids” - where discarded uniforms are converted into clothing for disadvantaged children.

The Rag Review By The Rusty Fork WELCOME to our latest version of The Rag Review. This month we selected Cooroy Chinese in Maple Street. This has been a family favourite of the “Forks” since we moved here a number of years ago. In fact, if Mrs Fork is ever away, good old Rusty heads straight to the Cooroy Chinese for a take-away. Quite often I sit chatting to other deserted dads on the seat outside, and keep updated with the real estate for sale in the Hinternoosa window. The menu is very traditional for a Chinese restaurant in an Australian country town. The food is absolutely fantastic. It is quick, fresh, tasty

and without the grease and msg so often, found in their competitors offerings. Make no mistake, this is no gourmet Michelin star destination. It is clean, bright, fresh and quick. If you are meeting some friends with their kids in tow, the restaurant is perfect. But if you want to make it an occasion, take it away and enjoy it in your hinterland home. Our family favourites are the combination chow mein with crispy noodles, Mongolian lamb, fried rice, spring rolls and of course beef and black bean. Keep an eye on the specials board. There are always lots of tasty seasonal offerings, and my all time favourite: deep fried ice cream. The young staff in the

window are very efficient, friendly, polite and make sure your wait is kept to a minimum. Overall, this is a great, cheap dinner for the whole family, and has my mouth watering just thinking about it. It must also be mentioned that this family has lived and worked in Cooroy for many years, always running an excellent business and employing young people. A great success story of a diligent hardworking family that contributes to the local community. Well done! Fork ratings (out of 10): Food Service Atmosphere

MOTHER’S DAY SHOW COTA Queensland Aged Care System navigator information session GETTING support as we age - where to start WE are all getting older and deciding we need some assistance can be a difficult decision to make Navigating Australia’s Aged Care system can seem complex, but a little bit of information can greatly assist in getting the support we need to continue living as independently as possible. The Australian Government subsidises a range of supports and services to keep us living as independently as possible but understanding what is available and how to access it can seem complex.

Pomona and District Community House is partnering with COTA Queensland as part of a national aged care navigator trial to provide an information session on aged care support in Australia. The information session will cover the three main types of support subsidised by the Australian government. It features: •how to access those supports • what your costs might be • how to think about what support is important to you. Join us for a cup of tea with COTA Queensland at the Lawson Shed, Pomona on Wednesday 21 April at

9.30am. Here is what some participants have said: “Very informative”; “Very pleased with the service available, can never learn too much as we age”. COTA Queensland is a statewide not-for-profit organisation providing a connection point for older people, their families and communities, organisations, and Governments at all levels to address issues for Queenslanders and co-create change. This Aged Care Navigator Trial is delivered by COTA Queensland as part of a consortium led by COTA Australia and funded by the Australian Government.

And on Saturday, April 24 from 7am, you’ll get your chance to pick up and enjoy some of the loveliest and best cared-for plants in the shire. Yes, it’s the great Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends Plant Sale happening again, with something for everyone to enjoy and brighten their home and garden. FNBG member Jane Darling said foliage plants like alocasias, philodendrons, and caladiums will be on sale. “And we’re having a sale on items such as bromeliads, ferns and cordylines,” Jane said. “We also have succulents, some Australian native plants as well beehive ginger, heliconias and bat plants, all of which are flowering now in the gardens and look spectacular on show.” She said indoor plant interest had taken off since television’s Gardening Australia added a new segment featuring Instagram-infamous plant collector Craig Miller-Randle. The big sale starts at 7am continuing through to 11am, and there is no

longer a need to make an appointment – just turn up – but social distancing still applies. As a special bonus, the Noosa Botanic Shade Garden will also be open from 9am to noon, and with the rest of the beautiful Botanic Gardens right on the doorstep, why not bring a picnic and make a day of it? A coffee van will also be available. You can also visit the Shade Garden on Sunday April 4 on its regular first-Sunday-of-the-month opening from 9am to midday. The Friends’ propagation shed is located at Noosa Botanic Gardens car park on Lake Macdonald Drive, about 4km north of Cooroy town centre. More details can be found at www.noosabotanicgardensfriends.com.

1) What’s available? Great outdoor resources for our kids and families in the local skate parks we have- Cooroy, Pomona and many other hinterland locations (eg. Imbil). 2) What you do/what does skateboarding do to help kids? Teaching my own kids from a very young age I see them learning confidence in their own physical abilities and co-ordination as well as learning social skills and vitally important skate park etiquette Without these social skills in a really busy park environment, that’s when accidents can happen. It’s so important for skate park users to learn about taking turns and the spacial awareness of being in a busy park. But above all, it’s about kids getting active and having fun! 3) What about school holidays? School holidays are a great chance to get out to skate parks in our local community, spending time with family and friends. Some of the parents are even getting back on a board to spend time with their kids. Now the weather’s getting cooler, it’s the perfect way to burn off holiday energy. I like to get down there most days with my kids in the school holidays. 4) Local? For how long? I’ve been local on the Sunshine Coast since 1993

and my wife Sarah and I bought our home in Pomona in 2018. We love living in such a great little community. And the awesome skate park I used to travel to from elsewhere is now just down the road. 5) Your background/ history? Growing up in a small country town west of Gympie I had to make my own entertainment. At age 14 I built my first halfpipe in my backyard. Later, as an apprentice chef on the Coast, I would spend

all my free time skating with mates at Alex Skate Park. Over the years I’ve had four different sponsors and have skated in comps and demos with touring US pro skaters. I’ve been casually teaching skateboarding to kids all over the coast for about seven years now. I love it because I’m teaching them how to skate safely and with proper technique. Skateboarding is a real skill and one that I’m enjoying passing on to a new generation who will take it to a whole new level.

Magick reveals her equestrian talent WHEN you love your sport and your ponies so much but the nerves kick in and make it hard, there is no better feeling than overcoming these obstacles, in whatever form they are presented. Sometimes you just need your faithful pony to jump over them for you! Cassidy Magick has - with the help of her family, friends, community and fourlegged companion – pushed herself beyond her limits to overcome the nerves that would normally threaten to slow her down. There seems to be an increasing amount of pressure on young people regarding competition, time constraints, fitting in sport and recreational practice around school and wanting to do well – it can be nerve racking – no matter which sport it is. Cassidy has shown that despite all this, with the help of her crew – family, friends, community supporters and other positive influencers - you can overcome your fears and push yourself to the next level. How important this is to keep believing and keep trying even when it feels difficult! Cassidy’s mum Cathy said it involved getting 11-year-old Cassidy outside of her comfort zone to reach a bit further. “Cassidy would normally ride locally as part of the Pomona Pony Club but this time we tried something a little bit different as Cass decided to try her luck at

Interschool Equestrian. It was a very nervous and emotional start to her day, but with the help of friends, she finished by gaining some great experience and a big smile. She then went back to complete day two of the Victory College Interschool Show Jumping and looks forward to the next.” Representing the Pomona State School in this interschool event, Cassidy and students from approximately 25 other schools were able to compete in the Victory College’s state of the art facilities. Being long standing Pomona locals, the Magicks were proud to be showing the wider community what impact our little local rider can have. It is important also to know that these opportunities are out there and many may not know how to take the next step to test themselves. Students can always contact their school to find out, or in this case contact www.qld.equestrian.org.au to register and to see which events are coming up. Cassidy and her family would like to say a big special thank you to Madeleine and Annabelle Graham for helping Cassidy conquer those nerves. And thank you to coach extraordinaire Kirstie Ansell for helping Cassidy get this far. Look out for further local Magick. There will be no stopping Cassidy now!

Ray White Eumundi is expanding its office SINCE December 2019, when experienced real estate professional Vicki Pain opened Ray White Rural Eumundi, lots has happened in the real estate industry. Our office has a prominent location directly opposite the Eumundi Markets. This position, as well as the dedicated staff and Ray White brand, are all part of the growth of the office. Vicki, who also owns Ray White Rural Dayboro, felt now was the right time to expand the office so more buyers and sellers have the opportunity to work with Australasia’s largest real estate brand. Vicki is excited to be able to offer customers more exposure and greater coverage, with a team dedicated to the local community from the two established offices. Growing up with a rural background, as Vicki’s parents Dell and Bill Pain owned a cattle and grain property on the Darling Down and later semi-retired to acreage in Cooroy, Vicki also spent four years on a cattle station on the

edge of the Simpson Desert. This has given her the knowledge in Lifestyle and Rural properties. With a strong focus on the customer, Vicki with her team including her mum Dell, has built a reputation for maintaining exceptionally high standards of customer service. “We are about building relationships on trust and professionalism. We are a growing team dedicated and committed to the sale of your property or management of your investment property. “We provide smart solutions and strategic marketing campaigns to achieve the best results. Working closely with you,

we aim to exceed your expectations. We want you to feel confident that you are working with an agency that has your best interests in mind.” Our clientele is after a particular lifestyle. They may want to move out of the city and base themselves in the hinterland or near the ocean, but still be close enough that they can commute if necessary. Being able to utilise both locations and reach a wider audience, at both lifestyle and rural level, is extremely beneficial for our vendors and buyers. Come and meet Miek and Jen, Vicki and Dell and have a look at our beautiful new-look office.
