Have your say on dam safety upgrade impacts

Lake Macdonald Dam wall and spillway - Photo Marc Raffaele Photography THE next step in the upgrade of Lake Macdonald Dam is underway with the community invited to have their say on the potential impacts of the project and provide input for project planning. The almost $100 million upgrade of the dam will involve building a new spillway and reconstructing the earth embankments to better protect the dam against extreme floods and earthquakes. This will be the first major upgrade of Lake Macdonald Dam since the walls were raised in 1980 and will take up to two years to complete. With construction scheduled to begin mid-next year, Seqwater is seeking feedback from local residents, businesses, recreation users and interest groups to understand the potential impacts the project may have on the environment and community. Seqwater External Relations Manager Mike Foster said Lake Macdonald was just one of several dams in South East Queensland to be upgraded in the next few years to meet the latest design standards and safety guidelines. “Dams like Lake Macdonald are large-scale public infrastructure and while the probability of a dam safety incident is very low, it is a risk we must manage,” Mr Foster said.

“The project is expected to have a range of impacts so it’s important we work with people to understand what they will be and plan for them.” Mr Foster said the temporary lowering of the lake ahead of construction next year was one aspect of the project Seqwater was seeking feedback on. “We will need to gradually lower the water level in the lake by about 5-6 metres to protect people living downstream and working on the dam during construction,” he said. “We recognise this will have impacts on the natural environment, as well as residents living around the lake. Once the upgrade is complete, the dam will be allowed to naturally refill to its original full supply level. One way to reduce the impacts of the lowering will be to salvage and relocate aquatic species in the lake. This is a common approach to managing aquatic life when working in waterways and will require planning and support from key stakeholder agencies and local experts.” Feedback received over the next few months will be used to develop an Impact Assessment Report to assist with environmental and regulatory approvals. Once the report is complete, it will be available online and at the Cooroy Library and Noosa Shire Council offices. Continued Page 2

FOLLOWING a growing number of complaints about cats – both domestic and feral – killing native wildlife and even other people’s pets Council is warning cat owners to contain their pets to their own properties or risk a fine. Council’s Local Laws Manager Phil Amson says it is every cat owner’s responsibility, under Noosa’s Local Laws, to prevent their pet from roaming, be it through natural areas, neighbourhoods or other people’s properties. “In order to deal with nuisance and aggressive domestic and feral cats Council’s Local Law and Environ-

ment Officers are working with affected residents to capture wandering cats using approved and humane devices,” Mr Amson said. “The cat’s owner can expect to pay a $250 impoundment fee to retrieve their pet, in addition to a $261 infringement for allowing the cat to wander. And if the cat isn’t microchipped, which is required by law, the owner may be issued with an additional $261 fine,” Mr Amson said. Council’s Environmental Services Manager Craig Doolan said microchipping not only helped staff reunite cat with owner, it distinguished a domestic cat from a feral one, which staff may euthanise. “Roaming cats can attack and maim local wildlife as well as other people’s pets. The roaming cats themselves are also at risk of being attacked and injured by feral cats. “The message is simple,” Mr Amson said. “It’s in every cat owner’s best interest to keep their cat contained, not only to avoid a fine, but to spare our birds and other wildlife.”

Letter to the editor

The road between Pomona and Cooroy has always been known as Yurol Forest Road. I was a little surprised a couple of weeks ago to see a new sign along the route stating I’m on Kin Kin Road. Who decided on this??! The confusion continues with two signs north of Cooroy on the old highway to Pomona stating the road is Yurol Forest Road plus south bound on the old highway another sign stating Kin Kin Road. Which is it council? Can anyone explain to me why Boreen Point is in brackets and also why Cooran does not rate a mention considering that the first meeting of the Noosa Council was held in the Cooran Hall in 1910. MARY River Road Bridge in Cooroy has been closed between Marara Street and Lower Mill Street and is currently undergoing demolition works. Current works are on schedule with the construction of the bridge to commence this week with the installation of the foundation pilings. The foundation work will be take two weeks (weather dependent) and involves the installation of 16 concrete piles. Noise and some ground

vibration will be experienced during this stage of work. Piling work will be carried out Monday to Saturday between 7am and 5pm for two (2) weeks, weather dependent. Council has allocated $2.1m for the project, which includes funding from the Australian Government Bridges Renewal Program to construct the bridge. Completion of the bridge is expected in November, 2018.

Have your say on dam safety upgrade impacts From Page 1 How to get involved There will be a range of engagement activities occuring between August and September 2018, including: • Online interactive impacts map – provide feedback on the impacts we have identified (pinned) on the map or add your own localised impacts in areas such as traffic, noise and dust, recreation and environment. • Business impacts survey – tailored survey for business owners and operators to understand the perceived impacts to the local economy. • Social impact survey – answer a series of

questions to help us better understand the perceived impacts the project may have on your way of life. • Information stand at the Cooroy Library – visit the library any time during opening hours to find out more about the project and fill out a feedback survey in person. Staff will also be available to collect your feedback and answer questions at the library on 18 August and 21 August 2018. COOROY RAG

THE Noosa Country Show is on September 7th and 8th at the Pomona Showgrounds. Happy faces and the chitter chatter of old friends catching up. That touch of excitement from a treat of fairy floss, a showbag or winning in your competition section are just a few of the traditions that our families love to share. What’s the

fab popular new toy this year? Who’s the best in show? What’s on the prize list for the major raffle this year? Who did you vote for in the People’s Choice? The gentle sway of the champion stud beef cattle as they are led around the ring. The confidence of the junior handlers surely reveals our country show and rural pursuits are in safe hands with our Next Gen. The belt buckles, jeans and cowboy hats are just what the town ordered. Share in the stories of triumph, grab a coffee, a snag or a bit of bacon with egg. Paddock to Plate

Retro themed Aprons, Batik Fabric and recycled challenges are just for fun in this zone. The cakes and slices to amaze us all, the jams and biscuits just leave you wanting more. Champions Café is the place to be, share recipes and memories as you read the plaques of past winners. Head downstairs (there is a ramp too) smell the beauty of our green thumbs’ hard work and their creative flair in the arrangements and the orchids are always spectacular. Can you spot the

THE Combined Coastal Car Club, commonly known as the Cooroy Car Club, is celebrating 25 Years in August 2018. The Club was initially formed in Gympie in the early 1980’s and called the Gympie Early Holden Club. As member numbers declined it incorporated all makes and models and was renamed Golden City Car Club. The dominate make was still Holden but all were welcomed. The Club started holding Motorkana events and car shows in Gympie. In the early 1990’s the Club relocated to the Cooroy Soccer Club grounds where the Cooroy RV Stopover is now. The Soccer Club relocated over to the Showgrounds side of Mary River Road to be with the “people” sports and the Cooroy Pony Club relocated over to Johnson Park. The Car Club was invited to join the Cooroy Sporting Complex Committee, an opportunity we jumped at. A major makeover of the complex occurred. The Car Club was involved from the start in working with the Noosa Council, Cooroy Sporting Complex Committee and the Community. To become a member of the Sporting Complex the Club had to be incorporated, have public liability, a name that reflected the Noosa Shire, and a constitution that reflected what we were about. From early 1991 we started having Shows with our Motorkana events and then Swap Meets – all the time improving the grounds which were pretty average to say the least. In the early years there wasn’t a clubhouse so we had meetings at the Potter’s house and the hotel. The membership grew mostly from the Sunshine Coast as far south as Beerwah and north to Gympie and beyond. In 1994/95 it was decided we needed a clubhouse. There was a derelict building on site which the Soccer Club was planning to renovate before they relocated. The roof had been removed because of asbestos, but the outside frame and walls were okay. A truss roof was fitted along with roofing. The internal walls were removed and a lot of work was done by members, Noosa Council, the Sporting Complex and many local businesses to rebuild. We kept on improving it to what we have today. In order for all this to happen we had to change our name to reflect where we were…. The Combined Coastal Car Club was born. The Club now holds its annual car Show and Shine in October each year. This year the event will be on Sunday 21st October. The last couple of years have been hampered by wet weather but with a “show must go on” attitude by club members, our sponsors, the local community and car enthusiasts the events have been a success and enjoyed by all who attended. Several local organisations have benefited with donations from the Cooroy Car Show. These include Brighter Future 4 Kids, Life Flight, SES, Katie Rose Cottage and the Rural Fire Brigade. A week-end of events to celebrate 25 Years as the Combined Coastal Car Club is planned for 25th & 26th August. All Life members, current and past members are invited to attend. More information can obtained by emailing admin@combinedcoastalcarclub.com or phoning Darryl on 0407 588 697.

news Is it time for a business health check?

COOROY RAG

Simone Flavelle, Senior Branch Manager, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches We’re now into August and another financial year. How did you fair last year? Inevitably some business owners will be smiling, others hoping nothing else will go wrong, and yet another group wondering why all their hard work has amounted to so little profit. Whichever group you see yourself in, now is the ideal time to do a health check of your business. One of the first outward signs of a business in ill-health is its relationships with customers and suppliers. Little things start to slip. Customer requests and orders get misplaced or are not followed through. Quotes and invoices contain errors or are not sent. Suppliers are not kept up to date with changing circumstances and are frequently asked for favours. The word ‘sorry’ becomes a common part of conversations with customers and suppliers. The next sign to look for is reluctance among customers and suppliers to deal with you. Early indications of this are customer orders being limited to items that cannot be sourced elsewhere, where previously the order was for a wider range of items or services. Other indications include a reduction in the amount of contact you are receiving from customers and suppliers, and continual postponements of visits or meetings with them. Financially, cash-flow is the heartbeat of the business. While it goes up and down in every business as customer payments are received and suppliers and expenses are paid, the variation should be kept to a minimum, and the trend watched very carefully. Another important element to include as part of the health check is a reality check. That is, it’s a good idea to reflect on what the business actually is, which may be very different to what you hoped it would be and how you are trying to promote it.

One final check is to take a look at the future, short and long term and realistically assess whether your business is in a fit state to cope with it. The key assessment in this context is to understand the economic and competitive environment your business is likely to be facing and whether the business is ready for the range of scenarios it may encounter. A key question to answer in this regard is: Who are my future customers, where will they come from and what will they want? If you would like to have a chat about your business, please contact me, Geoff, Darryl or any of the team on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona). It’s great to be with you.

Vietnam Veterans Day Service in Cooroy

Superannuation and separation: Who keeps the money? Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* DEPENDING on the situation, you might get some of your expartner’s super, or they may get some of yours. A divorce from your husband or wife, or a separation from your de facto, could mean a division of your assets and debts, whether they’re held separately or together, and superannuation is no exception. Another thing to note is even if one of you hasn’t contributed to super for many years, that person could still be entitled to a percentage of the other’s super. We explain some of the key points below. And, if you’re a de facto couple living in Western Australia, remember different rules may apply as you’re not subject to the same superannuation splitting laws. How is super divided? A superannuation agreement can be put in place before, during or after your relationship, as part of a broader ‘binding financial agreement’. This agreement can specify how super is to be split upon separation or divorce. If you and your partner don’t have a binding financial agreement in place already but have agreed how you would like super to be split, an Application for Consent Orders can be filed in court without your attendance to formalise the arrangement you’ve both come to. If you can’t come to an arrangement together, you might instead look to obtain Financial Orders, under which a court hearing will determine how super is to be split between the two of you. Because there are rules around when super can be accessed (for instance, you may need to have retired from the workforce), remember that splitting super won’t necessarily result in an immediate cash payout, as super is treated differently to other assets and debts. What does the process involve? You may want or need to get information regarding the value of the superannuation that is to be split. And, you’ll need to provide

various forms to the super fund to get this, which you can locate in the Superannuation Information Kit on the Federal Circuit Court of Australia website. You can do this if it’s your super fund, or your ex-partner’s super fund, but keep in mind fees for providing this information may be payable by the person who has requested the information. Depending on your circumstances, you may also wish to establish a ‘flagging agreement’ whereby the super fund is prevented from paying out any super until the flag is lifted, which may also result in a fee. Once the super splitting order is made, whether by consent or after a court hearing, you’ll also need to provide a copy of the order to the super fund for it to be effective. Splitting super - what to keep in mind Some people prefer to avoid lengthy disputes by choosing to forgo some of their entitlements. The trouble with doing this is that it may have significant financial consequences down the track, so it’s important to be armed with all the information you can to ensure the decisions you make are sound. Working out what you’re entitled to can be complicated, which is why it’s important to seek legal advice, and regarding other financial matters please contact us on 07 5447 7740 if we can be of further assistance. VIETNAM Veterans Day is commemorated on 18 August every year and Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub Branch are holding a service at the Cooroy Cenotaph at 11am. The special guest speaker for the service is Ian Mansfield, an ex-engine officer for the Australian Army who later worked for the United Nations finding and detonating land mines. Ian has written a book, “Stepping into a minefield: A life dedicated to landmine clearance around the world” and in recognition of his humanitarian work was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2010. After the service, light refreshments will be served at the Cooroy RSL. Vietnam Veterans day was originally known as Long Tan Day, chosen to commemorate the men of D Company, 6RAR who fought in the battle of Long Tan in 1966. On that day, 108 Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought a pitched battle against over 2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops in a rubber plantation not far from the small village of Long Tan. The Australians prevailed, but only after fighting in torrential rain for four hours. They were nearly overrun, but were saved by a timely ammunition resupply, accurate artillery fire from the nearby Australian base, and the arrival of reinforcements by armoured personnel carrier. Eighteen Australians lost their lives and 24 were wounded, the largest number of casualties in one operation since the Australian task force had arrived a few months earlier. After the battle the bodies of 245 enemy soldiers were found, but there was evidence that many more bodies had been carried away. On the third anniversary of Long Tan, 18 August 1969, a cross was raised on the site of the battle by the men of 6RAR. Veterans from the battle gathered at the cross to commemorate the fallen, and the day was commemorated by them as Long Tan Day from then on. Over time, all Vietnam veterans adopted the day as one to commemorate those who served and died in Vietnam. In 1987, following the very successful Welcome Home parade for Vietnam veterans in Sydney, Prime Minister Bob Hawke announced that Long Tan Day would be known as Vietnam Veterans Day. The Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub Branch invites the community to attend the service at the Cenotaph to commemorate the all the men and women who served in Vietnam and all other conflicts and peace keeping missions.

THE Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank are two of more than 300 that continue to change the banking landscape around Australia. Already having returned more than $700,000 to the hinterland and $50,000 of that to the Cooroy Memorial Hall project, the branches have just welcomed two new staff members in senior roles. Working with well-known local banking identity, Geoff Edwards, is new senior branch manager for Cooroy and Pomona, Simone Flavelle. Known by many in town for her role in the Cooroy branch some years ago, Simone has returned to lead the branches. “There are a lot of customers who remember me and I look forward to reconnecting with them and creating many new banking relationships in the hinterland. There are a lot of community events I’ll look forward to attending, too,” Simone shared. “Our branches are here because locals wanted them. Through their banking we continue to feed into the prosperity of our communities, not from them. Once customers see the difference their banking makes to where they live, extraordinary things start happening. It’s powerful stuff and it’s great to be part of,” Simone said. Simone grew up on the coast and went to school in Buderim. She’s passionate about her community, local sport and has been involved with her local surf club for more than 15 years. Somewhat of a Bendigo Bank veteran, Simone started at the Cooroy branch in 2010, moving onto Tewantin and later managing the Maroochydore branch for three years. Not only has Simone joined Geoff Edwards, who will now be working in his new Business Development Manager role but another experienced

Darryl will be the new Customer Relationship Manager at Cooroy and Pomona branches. Originally from New Zealand, Darryl moved to the coast in 2006 attracted by the positive outlook on life of the people, the amazing outdoors and warm winters. “I’ve worked in the banking industry for the past 27 years, most recently was working in the lovely community of Maleny. I jumped at the opportunity to work for Bendigo Bank in Cooroy and Pomona because of their strong community profile and their support of local community groups. It’s been such a great start and I look forward to all that lies ahead. We have a great team,” Darryl said. NATURE is amazing! While our calendar is saying it’s still winter, buds and flowers are appearing and the birds are nesting. Spring is arriving! And a timely reminder to review our gardens – what’s looking tired and needs replacing, where the empty spots are, and what additional plants or concepts we might like to incorporate. The Friends at the Noosa Botanic Gardens are very aware of our Spring gardening needs and for the 4th consecutive year will be holding their annual Father’s Day Plant Fair. And this year they’ll have plant stock aplenty available. In addition to having propagated many more plants in their new propagation shed, there are several new stall holders this year to complement all of those returning from previous years. And if you have a question or three to ask or just want to be better informed about all things gardening, another fabulous array of speakers have been lined up for this year’s event.

What better place to enjoy Spring weather than at the Noosa Botanic Gardens on the banks of Lake Macdonald at Cooroy. And as the Plant Fair is always held on Father’s Day, and you need an additional excuse to visit, why not grab Dad and the kids and a picnic and head out there. There’s lots of areas for the kids to run around – or dig for dinosaurs in the new children’s activity space. And Dad will love the gardening toys – oops I mean tools! And the classic cars on display. Keen gardeners and garden clubs always have this Fair in their diary. But it doesn’t matter whether your garden is big or patio size or you just want some beautiful unique or aromatic cut flowers or decorative garden items, you’ll be surprised at the diversity of the stallholders. Entry is free. And all net proceeds go back into supporting the Noosa Botanic Gardens. Open at 9am. Food and beverage available. Put it in your diary now. Sunday 2nd September. See you there.

New bridge for Cooran’s Old Noosa Road CONSTRUCTION will start on a $1.5M replacement for the Old Noosa Road Bridge at Cooran in mid-August. Infrastructure Services Director, Carl Billingham said, “Council is pleased to deliver this new bridge, which has been made possible by an Australian Government grant. “The Bridges Renewal Program grant is contributing approximately half of the cost of this project,” Mr Billingham said. “This is a much-needed hinterland project and Council is pleased to jointly fund this important piece of hinterland infrastructure.” The current, single-lane timber bridge has a load limit of only 16 tonnes. “The new, single-lane concrete bridge will have a load-limit of 44 tonnes. It will be longer and wider than the old bridge. It will have safety barriers and it’s been designed to last 100 years. “The new bridge will be a much better bridge and is designed to serve the community for generations to come.” The bridge will be under construction for four months and it is due to reopen in December, weather permitting. “There will be detours

COOROY RAG

INSPIRED by Cooroy’s historic, CBD laneways, the Butter Factory Art Centre is putting on a pseudo laneway party of its own. ‘Unwind at BFAC’ is a free event, open to all ages and featuring an American-style food van, a live show all the way from Western Australia and a cash bar. Perth-based two piece, The Hardey McMurrick Two will play two sets on the night. The first is live music, the second performance featuring a slapstick variety show called ‘The Weird Ticket’. “We’re excited to host these guys during one of the busiest times of the calendar for Hinterland artists,” BFAC co-ordinator Alicia Sharples said. ‘Unwind at BFAC’ shares dates with the final weekend of the annual Noosa Open

Studios – an event where artists in the region invite the public in to their studio spaces. “We’re inviting everyone to come and be the audience after a busy couple of days!” Ms Sharples said. “They can just grab some food, a cold drink, and enjoy the show! Maybe network a little, swap notes with each other on how they’ve gone. “We see it as almost, an industry event for our artist network – but everyone is invited to our little laneway down the side of our entrance.” Unwind at BFAC features Cooroy business, The Wing Stand as food stall, with their American-style menu (incl. vegan and gluten free options) available from $6 to $10. ‘Unwind at BFAC’, 4pm – 8pm Saturday August 25 at 11a Maple Street, Cooroy. DELICIOUS WINTER MENU

SUNDAY 26th of August marks the final day of Seniors’ Week and the first day of Op Shop Week and to celebrate both, The Indee Theatre at Yandina is staging a reprise performance of last October’s sellout comedy The Op Shop Ladies. It’s another in the occasional series of Sunday Laughter-noons, where audience members pay whatever they think an afternoon of laughs is worth – so each person decides their own ticket price. The show (with nearly all the original cast)

allows the actors to refer to their scripts (but not read them). Apart from that it’s a normal show with sets, costumes etc. Op Shop Ladies will be at two o’clock at the Yandina School of Arts and although it’s pay at the door, you can still book your seats on 5472 8200. There’ll be complimentary tea and coffee, plus wines and snacks on sale. The School of Arts is air-conditioned and it’s relaxed table seating

THE Kindness Club are very excited to announce that we will have a regular presence in the Cooroy Rag! We will be sharing news about our projects, introducing you to our members, profiling kind people in our town and surrounding areas, writing stories, and inviting our lovely community to take part in kindness challenges. A wonderful opportunity to share a little kindness! Here is a little about us... The Kindness Club, based at Cooroy Outside School Hours Care, was formed in April 2014 by Wendy Scott and Lisa Hill. After discussing a shared love of random acts of kindness and the feelings of satisfaction and joy they bring, we decided to share that joy with the children and the Kindness Club was formed. The aim of the Kindness Club is to simply spread happiness and kindness and to inspire others to do the same! At each Kindness Club meeting, children are invited to share their kindness experiences, whether it’s a kindness they have shown to someone or a kindness extended to them. We discuss current projects and share ideas for new ways to show kindness to others! The Kind-

ness Club participate in regular projects, big and small. The children’s kind hearts and thoughtful ideas are supported (and delighted in) and extended through a variety of kind deeds and community projects. Our members range from 5 to 12 years of age. Over 50+ children have joined the club over the years! All children in our care are welcome to join and to participate in our projects. Many of our members have moved on to high school, however, still return to take part in Kindness Club’s projects on occasion. The Kindness Club encourages kindness, empathy, awareness of others, and a sense of belonging within the community. The children learn that their participation and contributions are important and appreciated. They are shown that they really can make a difference. The Kindness Club are very grateful for the support they receive from the community and look forward to sharing more kindness with you! “Little hearts can make a big difference” The Kindness Club would love to hear from you and share your experiences! Send your kindness stories to thekindnessclub@outlook.com or to: The Kindness Club, c/- Cooroy Outside School Hours Care, P.O Box 816, Cooroy.

Congratulations to Ron Corr and Kevin Summerfield who both celebrated 60 years as JPs this month. Pictured: Back - Hazel Corr, Ben Treloar, Marty Hunt MP, Laurel Summerfield. Front: Ron Corr, Kevin Summerfield and Esme Armstrong (OAM)

It’s certainly silver! THERE’S a very special Silver Anniversary with a shimmering lining coming up – 25 years Lifeline Cooroy has had its doors open! Lifeline Cooroy’s manager, Deb Daybell, is thrilled to know that not only has the store assisted those in need and provided vital help to our community in so many ways, but their contribution has saved lives. “We enjoy welcoming our delightful regular clientele and the many visitors and holiday makers who pop in when we’ve been recommended,” says Deb. “Each and every one supports our Charity Shop just by their mere presence. “Many may remember our combined efforts with the Uniting Church and the CWA in the early days – with fashion parades held around Melbourne Cup Day, then our toy sales near Christmas time, our shelves bulging with beloved playthings that found their way to another deserving youngster

for Christmas. “Now we pride ourselves with our yearly Denim Sale – 12 years so far and getting rather a reputation as it grows and grows. So much so that next year in May we will be holding it in the newly refurbished Cooroy Memorial Hall. “So we are making a huge deal of our very special Silver Anniversary happening in August. To celebrate we are slipping into everything silver, sassy and shimmery! “We shall have coffee and cake for those popping their heads in the door at around 10am on Thursday, August 16. And we shall woop it up for a week with a daily ‘Silver Spot Sale’ – you may just bag your ‘cloud with a silver lining’. “25 years for Lifeline Cooroy is your celebration. Thank you to everyone, however you have supported us, and we plan a further 25 years now that Gold is in sight.”

COOROY AUTO WRECKERS & ENGINE CENTRE

COORAN hosted Beachmere on a glorious Saturday evening as the top two sides faced off in what promised to be a slobber knocker. Showing their intentions clear from the kick off the Cutters muscles up in defence & showed the Pelicans they were in for a much closer contest than the last encounter. After a couple of penalties & the lions share of possession Gus Sullivan was able to barge over to open the scoring. Beachmere hit back with a clever try from a scrum to take the lead 6-4 but turned possession over from the kick off. A converted try just before 1/2 to Jonah Hodgetts saw a 10-6 lead to the Cutters at the break. After 6 minutes a 70 metre try to Riley Lourigan took the score to 16-6 after Gus Sullivan converted. With Grant Adams’ kicking game on point the defence lifted. The Pelicans started dropping the ball early in their sets which lead to the returning Ben Hayes crossing from another mistake. After being reduced to 12 men Gus Sullivan scored from a scrum to take the final score to 26-6. Every player stood up but it was Jonah Hodgetts getting 1 point, Grant Adams 2 & Riley Lourigan 3 points. The Cutters made the trek to Yandina to take on the home team. With the Raiders needing to win to stay in touch for a finals spot it wasn’t going to be an easy game. The Yandina defence stood tall early before a Riley Lourigan try broke the shackles. Ricky Bobbie Brown scored from a

In Loving Memory of Arlo Son of Cutters President Dylan Crawford Window & Treasurer Erin Crawford Window bomb the Yandina fullback allowed to bounce & another try just before 1/2 time took the score to 18 nil. A couple of tries just after the break to the Cutters made the score 30 nil before a try to ex Cutters player Jordan Stubbins jolted the boys back into action. The last 20 minutes saw end to end footy with the Cutters taking out a 44-10 win at the end. Another great team display but Brock Mavin took home the 3 points, Josh Javernig 2 points & Grant Adams 1.

‘Osso Bucco’ is an Italian dish made of shin or veal containing marrowbone stewed in wine with vegetables. However our ‘healthy’ version substitutes the wine for chopped tomatoe; use whatever takes your fancy. INGREDIENTS 4 (800g) beef or veal shanks 1 to 2 tbsp thyme leaves] 2 large carrots, cut into thick rounds 420 can cannellini beans, drained, rinsed 410 g can chopped tomatoes with roasted capsicum METHOD Place the shanks in the slow cooker. Coat with thyme and season generously with sea salt and cracked pepper Add the carrots, then the cannellini beans Pour over the tomatoes with roasted capsicum Swirl 1/3 cup water around the empty can of tomatoes to remove all the sauce and add Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours or until the meat is tender
