Cooroy Rag 30 April 2024

THURSDAY 25 April is the day the nation collectively comes together to stop and reflect. To reflect on the ultimate sacrifices made during the many wars Australia has participated in. It is also the day where we collectively give thanks. Thanks for the freedom we now relish and thanks for the

lifestyle that we now have. The Cooroy Parade was symbolic of these two gestures, with young and old coming together, and Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub Branch President Jennifer Walker echoed these sentiments.

“This is the entire community having a national day where we give thanks for what we have and the freedom we have – and hav-

ing the schools get involved is so important,” Jennifer stated.

Anzac Day in Cooroy started with the Dawn Service, with a crowd of around 2,000 attending.

“This was my first Dawn Service here and it was a great reflection of the community and their commitment to their forefathers – certainly people who have been here for a while have told me that

the numbers keep growing each year and this was the biggest that they have seen.”

Taking over as President in early February, Jennifer said that she definitely hit the ground running.

“Part of being President is that you have to run Anzac Day and I have to say that I’ve been very lucky with people like Peter Watts who have helped me, and also

Whilst only new to the Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub Branch, Jennifer has long been involved in the RSL and veterans movement with tenures in the Army Reserve within the Intelligence Corps, as National CEO with Legacy, and she has been on the Veterans’ Review Board.

Cooroy History

WHAT a huge edition we have featuring our dedicated ANZAC day coverage from the Cooroy Parade. As always it was well attended by the local community and featured many generations and I hope you like the many photos we took on the day

This day on April 25 each year is a day to celebrate the incredible sacrifice that so many made for our way of life. When I hear that bugle played on sunrise I can’t help but think of those in my family who served including my Mum’s father, Robert Friend who was stationed in Papua New Guinea in World War II. A Sergeant in the 31/51 Australian Infantry Battalion he left from Richmond in Queensland in 1941 and was ‘discharged’ five years later. I never met him as he passed away before I was born but I am so thankful for what he did. I see his photo and think about how young

he looks, and I am very aware that these young men and women grew up quickly and that what they had to face would have been brutal. We are forever grateful for what they did and will never forget. Ness

Noosa represented by Dylan Hafey at Queensland Youth Parliament

AN INTEREST in helping others and being active in the community led Pomona’s Dylan Hafey to think about entering the world of politics. Through determination and volunteering, Dylan is now fulfilling his goal and is representing the Noosa electorate at the 2024 YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament (QYP).

Dylan recounted that in order to really get things done and to help, political office is the best way.

“I’ve always been interested in politics and ever since I was young all I have wanted to do is help and you can do the most if you get into politics,” Dylan said.

Dylan knows the area well: he went to Pomona State School and then to Noosa District State High School, and he worked at Pomona IGA, a job which he said gave him good all-

round experience.

Active in the community as well, Dylan also volunteered with local environmental groups including the annual Clean Up Australia Day. He is also an Australian Scout Medallion recipient and the current treasurer for Noosa Toastmasters.

When the QYP was announced for 2024, Dylan saw it as an opportunity to get hands-on training and valuable insight into how political office runs.

“There’s one Youth Parliament member from every electorate. We run a mock parliament, we put up bills, and it’s a very hands-on way to see how parliament works,” Dylan said.

Run in partnership by the YMCA and Queensland government, each year the QYP selects 93 new youth members between the ages of 15 and 25 – one from

every state electorate – for the program.

The program has been seen as a great way to have younger people involved in politics. It also provides many opportunities for personal development in the areas of leadership, public speaking, working collaboratively, and gaining legislative experience.

“I’ve got a lot of learning to do and I am so grateful for this opportunity as well as being selected for the Justice, Police, Community Safety and Corrective Services portfolio,” Dylan said.

Just like in the ‘big house’ of politics, the QYP members also have specialist areas that they look after.

“Any mock bills we pass are actually given to MPs for their consideration and I’m really looking forward to working with the other 92

youth members on legislation, speaking with stakeholders, and having some good ol’ fashion debate in the chamber on many issues.”

Dylan cites his “very grounded” upbringing in the Noosa hinterland as one of the key drivers for him wanting to do good within the community he knows and loves.

“I still live in Pomona and it’s just really good here. People say hi – it’s a real community here and thank you to everyone who supported my nomination. I am immensely proud to be representing Noosa.”

Dylan Hafey in his role as the youth member can be contacted via noosa@ ymcaqyp.org.au. For more information on the QYP, please visit https:// ymcaqueensland.org.au.

Anzac Day

Continued from page 1.

Retiring with her partner onto their longheld block of land at Belli Creek last year, Jennifer thought she would casually join the local RSL; however, she was quickly convinced to take over as Sub Branch President.

“Cooroy in particular is a great community and I’ve always felt that it’s a growing town,” Jennifer said.

And growing it sure is, with one of the biggest Anzac Day Parades ever seen this year.

From 10am onwards, crowds started to gather for the official Anzac Day Parade which left from the library, proceeded up Maple Street, around the clock tower, and culminated outside the RSL.

The Parade was led by the sound of bagpipes, and behind them, the veterans, who were met with claps from the crowd as they marched past.

School children from local schools proudly marched behind those who have served,

and a crowd of around 1,000 flanked Maple Street and watched the procession. Treasurer Melissa Roberts stated that participation from the school children was so important.

“Involvement from the younger generations who are involved in cadets and scouts and by way of school will ensure that the branch, which has been going for 103 years, continues.”

We will remember. Lest we forget. Did you attend the Dawn Service or the Parade? Tell us what you thought by sending a letter to the editor at editorial@ cooroyrag.com.au

Cooroy Denim & Country Fest set to be biggest yet

THE biggest selection of all things country, denim, and Australiana is set to be available for purchase as Cooroy Lifeline holds its annual ‘Cooroy Denim & Country Fest’ from 4 May while stock lasts.

The huge event will see the entire shop transformed and stocked with unique festival items, with all money raised going to fund Lifeline’s much-needed crisis support hotline 13 11 14.

This little shop located at 22a Maple Street will be your one-stop shop for all things with a denim, country and Australiana aesthetic.

The sale is also a way to do your bit for the environment – buying second hand is a much ‘greener’ option.

Store manager Deborah said she has been collecting all year for the festival.

“This year we have a lot more western gear.

“There are lots of nice western boots and leather jackets, and we have 180 boxes in our warehouse ready to come here.”

Deborah, who hails from the bush at Mt Isa, saw the fest as a way to further raise much-needed funds for the vital Lifeline counselling service.

“We are the only ones who do this and it’s big. I recommend getting in early on the first day.”

The fest will stock a huge range of items including western clothing, vintage items, cowboy boots and hats, denim clothing and Australian brands such as Driza-bone and Akubra, amongst many others.

The Cooroy Denim & Country Fest will run from 8:30 am to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday 4–5 May, and from 9 am to 4 pm on Monday 6 May. The fest will then continue in-store under normal operating times.

New deputy in town at Noosa Council

THE NEWLY elected Noosa Council has formally announced their deputy mayor and who will take on the role of Local Disaster Management Group deputy chair.

And the winners are? Cr Brian Stockwell as deputy mayor, and Cr Jess Phillips as Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) deputy chair.

Mayor Frank Wilkie said the councillors voted for experience when making their decisions.

“Councillor Stockwell offers extensive council

experience and depth of knowledge on the strategies and policies that have made Noosa what it is today – its points of difference,” Cr Wilkie said.

“Likewise, Councillor Jess Phillips, in her former role as a Queensland police officer, has worked in the emergency services space and taken part in disaster management events previously.

“She talks the language and is the best candidate for the role,” Cr Wilkie said.

The positions are pivotal

for the smooth running of council, and Cr Stockwell, now in his fourth term, stated that he was “honoured and privileged” to take on the role.

“It’s something I will not take lightly and will give it my best for the next four years,” Cr Stockwell said.

“There are significant challenges ahead for the community and I look forward to the opportunity to work with the mayor as a leadership team in this council to deliver a future that keeps Noosa different by nature.

As deputy chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, Cr Phillips will support the mayor in his role as chair.

Cr Phillips said she was humbled and excited to take on the role.

“I have 15 years of policing experience. I’ve been a first responder through cyclone, flood, fire and the pandemic, so I think that experience will help to ensure the community can have faith in council during times of disaster,” Cr Phillips said.

Community Bank Cooroy gives back

THE COMMUNITY Bank Cooroy has two main objectives: to look after your financial needs and to empower the local community. When a bank dedicates up to 80 per cent of its profits to the community, it’s more than a promise: it’s a testament to values, and community banks understand the importance of investing in the well-being of the communities they serve.

The success of Community Bank Sunshine Coast began in the late 1990s when Cooroy faced the closure of the big four bank branches. Instead of accepting the loss of banking

convenience, locals partnered with Bendigo Bank to establish the Community Bank Cooroy, followed by Marcoola and Tewantin-Noosa branches.

The Cooroy community led the way in ensuring locals were looked after and empowered.

Owned by local shareholders, these community banks have given back over $4 million via the profit-with-purpose model.

Trish Radge, chair of Sunshine Coast Financial Services Limited (SCCFSL), stated that most profits are channelled back into the community.

“Banking with Bendigo Bank becomes a powerful way for you to make a difference and we all need a bank so why not choose one that benefits you and your community?”

Last year, over 70 organisations benefitted from the giving-back programs associated with the local community banks.

Notable donations include helping to fund local DV housing, a projector for Noosa Arts Theatre, and studio refurbishing and tech upgrades for Noosa FM101.3. The community banks have also supported the film industry, sponsored meetups at Peregian Digital Hub, and provided educational scholarships.

Your choice in banking matters, and it can impact lives daily in a positive way. Community Bank Cooroy manager Steve is committed to serving the community and helping you with your banking needs.

For more information reach out via socials at ‘Community Bank Sunshine Coast’ or via phone on 5447 7131.

New owner for Wildflower Fashion business spotlight

WILDFLOWER Fashion has undergone a bright transformation under the stewardship of new owner Janine Searl who took over the business in late January of this year.

Janine, who lives in the Noosa region, brings a wealth of experience from her previous ventures, one of which has included her

online jewellery store ‘Love From Noosa’.

Full of sassy personality and with a unique eye for all things fashion, Janine saw Wildflower up for sale and bought the quaint, funky and stylish boutique and is inviting the community to come in and say hello.

The first point of business was to put her own touch on

the premises.

“I’ve made some huge changes internally – lightened everything up and made it very feminine and opulent with a lovely chandelier and flowers.”

With cool weather approaching, the boutique has all the winter favourites including items from Ping Pong and Foil, and Janine stated that she will be stocking a range of luxurious bamboo clothing. Timeless classics and summer items are also available.

“I have some lovely knits and beautiful corduroy jackets that come in a range of colours.”

Wildflower also stocks a large selection of jeans and locally made jewellery.

Janine is always on hand and ready to help people with their styling, offering tips and suggesting items that will suit.

With Mother’s Day coming up, Wildflower has an extensive range of items that will impress, or a gift voucher can be purchased.

Wildflower Fashion Cooroy is located at 1/14 Maple St, Cooroy.

Beauty of natural area to be showcased at Community Bank

FOLLOWING on from a successful inaugural exhibition in Tewantin, the Community Bank Cooroy will be exhibiting the works of artist Rob Ramage throughout the month of May.

Rob said his work to be featured was inspired during the COVID lockdowns.

“I began taking my art seriously during the pandemic, using my painting as a form of meditation.

“After searching the internet for online art courses I discovered Scott Christensen’s Paint the Ocean. His art literally spoke to

Mother’s

me,” Rob said.

Whilst still learning, Rob is keen to show his acrylic and oil works which he states are bold and colourful.

“The online courses and Scott’s tuition were very easy to follow and designed to inspire and create your own colourful artwork.

“I’ve found I have used both Scott’s and my own style of painting to produce some vibrant local beach scenes that are easily recognised.”

With so much natural beauty in the region, Noosa and the hinterland made for the perfect inspiration.

“I’ve always been inspired by the colour and beauty of our beaches, the Noosa River precinct and our beautiful hinterland, and I hope my paintings reflect the passion I have for the area.”

Rob is also keen to paint more and utilise local arts groups.

“There is a great art community in the area which has groups from the beaches to the hinterland and I’m looking forward to becoming more involved with them.

“Having recently rearranged my garage, I now have a small area set up for a little studio where I find time just disappears as the colours flow onto the canvas.”

Rob said he was incredibly proud when asked to exhibit at the Community Bank Cooroy.

Rob’s exhibition will be in the Community Bank Cooroy, 36 Maple St, from Tuesday 30 April to Friday 31 May, with all paintings available for purchase at very reasonable prices.

War Memorial takes Art Exhibition on the road

COINCIDING with Anzac Day, Noosa Regional Gallery is proud to announce the opening of a special exhibition ‘Art In Conflict’.

Art in Conflict is a new touring exhibition of contemporary art from the collection of the Australian War Memorial located in Canberra. The touring exhibition has been on the road since 2022 and the Noosa Regional Gallery stop is the second last destination. Exhibition curator Dr Anthea Gunn said that the exhibition is a way to further understand.

“The exhibition reveals neglected histories and untold stories, and deepens our understanding of Australia’s experience of conflict, both past and present.”

Gallery Director Michael Brennan furthered the sentiments: “Like many of the exhibitions we share at Noosa Regional Gallery, Art In Conflict showcases the diverse responses of contemporary artists to difficult topics – in this case, the untold stories of our country’s involvement in conflict.”

Three major new bodies of work debut in this exhibition: two recent official war art commissions from Susan Norrie (Iraq, 2016) and Megan Cope (Middle East, 2017), along with a landmark commemorative work by Angelica Mesiti.

Megan Cope said she was honoured to have her work featured at the Australian War Memorial.

“It certainly is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience and I never would have expected it, to be honest, so I hope that people like the work and ask lots of questions, and think about our relationship with the Middle East.

Art In Conflict includes more than seventy paintings, drawings, films, prints, photography, and sculpture.

Leading Australian artists are represented, such as Khadim Ali, Rushdi Anwar, eX de Medici, Denise Green, Richard Lewer, Mike Parr and Ben Quilty. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art – a collection priority for the Memorial in recent years – is featured, with works by Tony Albert, Paddy Bedford, Robert Campbell Jr, Michael Cook, Shirley Macnamara, and Betty Muffler.

Art In Conflict will run until 9 June and entry to the exhibition is free. More information is available at www.noosaregionalgallery.com.au

Booklovers and bookworms invited to Rotary Bookfest

ONE OF the biggest events on the calendar for those who enjoy reading is about to happen, with the 2024 Rotary Noosa Daybreak Bookfest taking place from Friday 3 May to Sunday 5 May at the Noosa Leisure Centre on Wallace Drive, Noosaville.

Mount Everest will have nothing on the mountains of books available at Bookfest!

Bargains will also be the order of the day with all books $3 each and children’s books $1.

There will literally be thousands of books available to purchase, with all money raised going to projects dedicated to helping the local homeless.

A spokesperson from Rotary Noosa Daybreak said that the annual event is a pivotal way for the group to support the community.

“This year we will focus on continuing our work with the homeless in Noosa Shire and nearby surrounds.”

Funds from previous events have supported mental health initiatives, facilities for Noosa Coastguard, support for pro-

grams at the Salvation Army, and research into treatments for prostate cancer. Local organisations supported by Bookfest include Sunshine Butterflies, Hear and Say Centre, Noosa Surf Lifesaving Club, Childhood Cancer Support, Noosa Hospital, Sunshine Coast Rescue Helicopter and University of the Sunshine Coast, amongst others. Support for flood relief has been a priority in recent years and significant contributions have been made to individuals and organisations affected by the floods in the Noosa Shire. Through these partnerships, funds raised by the strong local support for Bookfest have encouraged many of the partners to contribute additional funds to support the local community.

“I encourage all keen local readers and those who love their books to come along to Bookfest Noosa to buy from the huge range of books available on every conceivable topic. All books have been thoroughly sorted and only the best quality books will be offered for sale.”

Upcoming exhibitions at Butter Factory

THE COOROY Butter Factory Arts Centre (CBFAC) is proud to announce its next exhibitions which will run from 17 May until 16 June and will feature a diverse range of artworks across four separate shows.

Mother and daughter Ilana Cowan and Sara Yael will come together to present an eclectic gathering of paintings, indigo textiles, and furnishings in the front galleries. Their ‘In Bloom’ exhibition is inspired by the Japanese concept of Oubaitori which is the idea that people, like flowers, bloom

in their own time.

Robert Faulkner’s exhibition ‘From Vietnam to Life Transitions’ will be showing in the Butterbox gallery and charts a life’s journey.

Robert depicts the very real repercussions of service to country, incorporating the nightmares, despair, humour, self-assessment and then eventual redemption.

Robert hopes the viewer perhaps recognises the madness and futility of war, and will find much to reflect on and comprehend the price to be paid. In the upstairs gallery,

Christian Dunham and Jodie Allen’s collaborative exhibition ‘Sentience’ seeks to unravel the artistic nuances surrounding the perception of sentience, with a specific focus on the human eyes as a symbolic gateway to understanding consciousness. This profound concept is explored through large portraits in charcoal. The official opening will be held on Saturday 18 May from 3 to 5 pm at 11 Maple St, Cooroy, and everyone is welcome to attend.

A NIGHT of immersive and world class

Spanish classical compositions will be on for just one night at The Majestic Theatre on 24 May with critically acclaimed local musician Andrew Veivers bringing his new project ‘Guitarra y Cuarteto’ to the Pomona theatre.

With a nod to Spain in its title which directly translates to Guitar and Quartet, Guitarra y Cuarteto introduces a fresh blend of Veivers' original compositions and iconic Spanish works performed with unparalleled finesse by the Black Square Quartet and Veivers himself.

“I am really excited to share the concert with audiences; it’s going to be an extortionary night of Spanish and classical music,” Andrew stated. The concert series, which will be touring across South East Queensland, draws on Veivers' extensive career and deep passion for flamenco guitar and is inspired by legendary musicians such as Manolo Sanlucar, Steve Reich and Manuel de Falla.

Intertwined into the show will also be Andrew’s new artistic direction which includes Spanish waltzes, movie scores, lullabies, theatre music, Brazilian jazz and flamenco.

“These are musical styles that I have enjoyed socially with family and friends for decades, but for the most part, have only rarely drawn on for my composition and performance,” Andrew stated.

“This project has afforded me the perfect opportunity to infuse elements of these beautiful musical traditions into my work.”

When considering the project, Veivers knew the Black Square Quartet would be the perfect group to collaborate with.

“The Quartet are formidable musicians each in their own right, and with their commitment to championing new and Australian music I knew they would bring a fresh perspective and unparalleled dedication to the work.

“Their passion for pushing musical boundaries aligns perfectly with my vision for this project, making them the ideal collaborators.”

Guitarra y Cuarteto will perform for one night only at Pomona’s Majestic Theatre, Friday 24 May from 7 pm. More information at www.redchair. com.au

The Guitarra y Cuarteto tour is presented by local performing arts company Red Chair with the support of the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.

THREE Sunshine Coast artists have combined their talents for a mixed media exhibition titled ‘Melange a Trois’ at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery from 27 April.

Stella Edmonson, Tina Pietzsch and Suzanne Beaver have all explored and developed different techniques, with their pieces imbued with texture, design and colours to create abundant variety.

Stella specialises in the ancient art of rug making with her folk-art-style embellished hooked rug tapestries. Tina’s medium is abstract acrylic paint pouring and modern abstract art. Tina also uses the ‘skins’ from her pours to make jewellery. Suzanne works in watercolour and acrylic paints, and, according to how the mood takes her, varies between traditional and abstract style paintings. Throughout their lives, all three have been involved in some form of crafts or the arts, including dancing and acting, until their new passions emerged in more recent years.

Their exhibition will continue until Wednesday 22 May.

The volunteer-run Pomona Railway Station Gallery is at 10 Station St, Pomona. Opening hours are 10 am to 4 pm Tuesday to Friday; 10 am to 2 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Vaccination saves furry lives Animal talk with Craig

THE DEVELOPMENT and use of vaccines and their effectiveness in controlling infectious disease has made huge inroads into the prevention of human and animal death and suffering since the field of immunology kicked off with Edward Jenner in the 18th century. I am in a privileged position to have avoided having to treat and manage the scourge of parvovirus and distemper that was rampant through the 20th century until effective vaccina-

tion became available. In the Cooroy and surrounding localities, we enjoy a very low to negligible prevalence of the diseases that we as vets vaccinate against. This is testament to the widespread use of quality vaccinations which not only protect individuals but also confer ‘herd immunity’. Strong herd immunity makes it very difficult for a disease to become established in a population and is an important aspect of vaccination programs.

In dogs, the core component of the vaccine stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies that protect the individual from parvovirus, canine distemper virus and canine adenovirus (infectious hepatitis). Of these, parvovirus is the main concern and although I have not diagnosed a case locally, there are pockets of risk on the coast and from Gympie northward.

This is a horrific condition that strips out the gut lining leading to a high chance of death from dehydration and septicaemia. Exposure can occur from environmental contamination in areas where the disease occurs, and the virus can survive well in the environment. Infectious hepatitis and distemper are, in my opinion, of negligible concern in this area. Vaccination is extremely effective in preventing dogs from succumbing to parvovirus.

The other two components often incorporated with distemper/ parvovirus/adenovirus vaccine are Bordatella and Parainfluenza, the agents responsible for canine tracheobronchitis or “kennel cough”. Up until about

18 months ago we did not see a lot of this but unfortunately the cases seen with this condition has increased. This is not a fatal condition unless the patient already has a severe respiratory or cardiac condition but is very contagious. Most of the patients I see are exposed in areas of high dog traffic such as beach access and dog parks and occasionally boarding/day care facilities.

I compare the effectiveness of vaccination with ‘flu vaccine in people; not a guarantee of immunity but symptoms if exposed will be much milder and of shorter duration.

There are a range of vaccine protocols and products available, and your veterinarian will be happy to discuss and advise of the best way to protect your canine companion. Next edition we will look at cats.

Building

Grant ensures masters swim club stays afloat

NOOSA MP Sandy Bolton has once again helped out many local community groups by way of funding which comes from the budget of the Noosa electorate office and the Noosa Masters Swimming Club were one of the many lucky recipients.

Ms Bolton distributes as much of her office operating

budget back into the community and this year Sandy provided Quick Start Grants again to help offset rising costs for local organisations.

“Thank you to all of our amazing community organisations who applied, with more applications this year than we have ever had.

“You and your volunteers are vital to our community,

providing essential services, supports and activities that we are deeply grateful for,” said Sandy. State Members of Parliament have a set amount of funds allocated to operate their Electorate Offices for the purchase of equipment, mail outs, community event hosting as well as other ‘day to day’ expenses.

SO, YOU want to have a toned and healthy body? Lucky for you it’s actually easier than you think! While there’s no one-size-fits-all formula, incorporating these five tips into your fitness routine can help you achieve your goals effectively. Here are my top tips for making and keeping a strong, athletic and feminine body.

Strength Training with Focus: Incorporate strength training into your workout routine, starting basic and working up to more complex compound movements. Compound exercises engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously, promoting overall muscle growth and toning, basically giving you more bang for your buck. Gradually increase resistance as your strength improves, and don’t shy away from challenging yourself! It’s the key to sculpting a defined physique.

Cardiovascular Exercise: Activities like swimming, running, cycling, boxing, or HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) are ideal. Not only does cardio help shed unwanted body fat, but it also improves heart health and boosts metabolism and overall health. Plus, (assuming you pick something you love doing) it’s fun!

Nutrition – FUEL Your Goals: Repeat after me: ‘I will never diet again!’ Instead of focusing on reducing your calories, focus on adding more nutrient density from whole foods to ensure you fuel your body with the right balance of macronutrients. Prioritise lean proteins, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Remember, nutrition is just as crucial as exercise in sculpting a feminine physique.

Consistency and Patience: Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither is a sculpted physique. Stay consistent with your workouts and nutrition, understanding that progress takes time. Set realistic goals and track your progress along the way, celebrating small victories as you move closer to your goals. Rest and Recovery: Rest is not a break from the program: it is part of the program! Allowing your muscles time to repair and grow is imperative if you want to achieve the results you work so hard for. Get plenty of sleep, stay hydrated, and consider practices like yoga or stretching to improve flexibility and reduce the risk of injury.

“Noosa District SHS’s commitment to providing diverse opportunities reflects our dedication to fostering a supportive and dynamic learning environment.

THE 2023 Noosa District State High School (NDSHS) captain and recipient of the Best All-Rounder award, Hayley Kirkpatrick, has been recognised as one of the winners of the TJ Memorial Award for 2024.

The TJ Ryan Memorial Medal and Scholarships are awarded each year to support Queensland students who show outstanding

“Hayley’s achievement undoubtedly serves as an inspiration to her peers and underscores the importance of perseverance and determination in pursuing one’s goals,” Mr Merrett said.

The TJ Ryan Memorial Medal represents a long-standing tradition of recognising educational achievement in Queensland.

The award is a memorial to Thomas Joseph Ryan –former teacher, barrister, and Queensland premier (1915–1919).

Mr Merrett further stated that educational excellence

The Kindness Club is turning 10!

THE KINDNESS Club will be celebrating ten years of spreading kindness in the community on Friday 24 May at Cooroy State School and all members past and present are encouraged to come along.

The Kindness Club has been spreading kindness through a variety of projects and activities since 2014 –that equates to a decade of kindness, caring, community connection and sweet little hearts.

The Kindness Club is

based at Cooroy Outside School Hours Care and comprises children aged 5 to 12.

Over the years the group has made gratitude journals, bookmarks, kindness rocks with positive messages and many other projects which all focussed on being kind and spreading happiness.

Kindness Club coordinator Wendy is putting the call out for people to get in touch and to share their memories.

State and non-state secondary schools can nominate one high-achieving Year 12 student for the award each year. Nominees should demonstrate outstanding leadership in their school and community, and academic excellence.

“Our initiatives not only foster academic excellence but also promote personal growth, creativity, and a well-rounded development in students, and we are incredibly proud of Hayley,” Mr Merrett stated.

Cooroy Gymnasts compete at state championships

EIGHT girls from the Cooroy Gymnastics Club finished their competition season recently at the Queensland State Championships.

The state championships saw the girls vying for selection to the Queensland team to compete at the Australian Championships, or the Border Challenge event which is held in conjunction with the Queensland State Club Championships, to compete against girls from Vic, NSW and WA.

After building into the

2024 competition season by attending the Premier Gymnastics Invitational and the SEQ Snr Regional Championships, the eight girls in levels 7–9 put their skills to the test against over 200 competitors from around Queensland. Polly Boyd was named the reserve for the Queensland level 8 team. Polly and team mate Leah Wilson both gained selection in level 8 to represent Queensland at the upcoming Border Challenge event.

Other members from the club had strong performances at the state championships. Grace Austin who unfortunately sustained an injury in the build-up to the event and was not able to complete her full program, placed second on the Floor Exercise and third on Beam in the level 9 U15 event.

Polly Boyd in level 8 U14 won the bronze medal on the Uneven Bars with Leah Wilson taking home bronze on Vault in level 8 Open. Arabella Fancourt missed out

Cooroy boxing a knockout

OVER 140 boxers converged on Noosa District State High School on Saturday 20 April for the Sunshine Coast Regional Boxing Championships.

The event showcased 70 pre-matched bouts over 12 hours and was the biggest single-day amateur boxing tournament ever held on the Sunshine Coast.

Event organiser and boxing coach Mark Evans said the event gave local Cooroy-based boxers the rare opportunity to fight in front of their home crowd.

by 0.1 on a bronze medal on Floor in level 8 Open. Likewise, Keely Willison put in a strong performance on Beam missing a bronze medal by 0.3.

The girls will wind up their season by attending the Maroochy Beach Invitational and the Border Challenge/ Queensland State Club Championships.

Anyone interested in joining the club can do so by calling 5442 5800 or emailing admin@cooroygymnasticsclub.com.au

“It was a great opportunity to showcase some of our local kids who otherwise never get a chance to fight in their hometown.”

Around 200 boxers travelled from all over Queensland as well as from interstate to compete.

Cooroy’s Impact Boxing had 12 local boxers competing, with nine taking home wins.

“A couple of our younger kids had to push through some nerves fighting in front of friends and family, and it is great to see the growth that comes for them from it.”

Mark said a standout was

Kane Cooper, who stopped his opponent in his first round to win the title.

The tournament is in its fifteenth year in Cooroy and the second in its current format, with plans to grow even more next year.

“We will have to have a second boxing ring so that we can have two fights going at the same time next year,” Mark said.

The event was warmly received by the local community and Mark stated there must have been over 400 spectators.

“To keep growing and expanding year-on-year is awesome and we are just so appreciative to the local community for their incredible support.

“We would also like to thank local businesses whose sponsorship makes events like this possible.”

Mark trains his fighters from his gym, Impact Boxing and Fitness Centre, at the Cooroy Business Park.

Strength and conditioning classes and training are available to everyone and the timetable can be found via Facebook.

Swimming pools can provide fertile breeding grounds for algae, bacteria, viruses, fungi and other Pathogens if the water is left untreated. Microbial contamination can create a variety of problems, ranging from aesthetic unpleasantries, such as slimy green water to serious health risks such as fugal, bacterial or viral infections. Their growth if left to go unchecked can result in sufficiently dense masses of organic material to clog and foul waterlines and valves, contribute to rot or corrosion.

Swimming pools usually require continuous chemical treatment which usually involves addition of chlorine and other halogen material on a continuous basis to establish a desired level of free available halogen commonly known as FAH. It is known that hypochlorous and hypobromous acid when added to water has an oxidizing effect which results in the removal of nutrients from the water and can prevent microbial infestation as well as algae infestation.

In view of the above it is desirable to provide an algal suppression method that addresses some of these shortcomings particularly the burden of regularly topping up the pool chemicals whilst still providing a pool which is suitable for use.

The Pulz ball contains mineral beads for inhibiting algae growth in a water body.

It has been found that placing the mineral beads into the ball and placing it in the skimmer box which allows the swimming pool water to flow through the ball results in reducing or taking away the need for adding chemical additives for maintaining the pH of the pool and preventing or at least suppressing the growth of algae in the swimming pool for up to three years thereby either reducing or completely taking away the need for adding any top up chemicals. in pools smaller than 30,000 ltrs the ball is expected to last up to five years.

Customer feed back has indicated that the Pulzball has killed off their black dot mold, that they have used a lot less chemicals and the water feels much better…

New council settling in THE COMMUNITY has chosen a great mix of councillors, with five returned and two new representatives, all with a love of community at heart.

Since being sworn into office on Wednesday, April 3, the group has been in constant training. A key principle all of us are keen to adhere to is financial sustainability. Responsible financial management guarantees all the services you expect can continue to be delivered now and well into the future, despite rising costs and the disruption caused by natural disasters.

A secure financial footing is not something we take for granted. Many councils are operating in deficit. Thanks to excellent advice from finance staff, success in attracting grant funding and

a disciplined approach by councillors, although there is always room for improvement, we enjoy quality services for a relatively small council. Planning for the first budget of the term is also well underway.

At the first meeting, the councillors voted for experience in choosing the Deputy Mayor and Deputy Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group. They are Cr Brian Stockwell and Cr Jess Phillips. Brian has over ten years Noosa Council experience and Jess, a former police officer, has worked in disaster management operations previously.

Looking ahead, we’re preparing to take council meetings to community halls where we can catch up in person to chat on issues that matter to you.

Butter Factory

You may have noticed activity around the Cooroy Butter Factory where a new ceiling has been installed and the exterior is also about to get a facelift. With this project it was essential to respect the volunteers and staff who activate this space, the rich history of the site. Thanks to the Butter Factory staff and the Cooroy Future Group for their patience during the works.

New Police Helicopter

WE NEED a police helicopter in the Sunshine Coast which will be an invaluable asset for fighting crime. One of the first funding decisions our new Premier Steven Miles made was for a new police helicopter in Townsville. I’ve heard from police who have told me about the massive impact this has made in Townsville. That’s why I met with the Police Minister to call on him to deliver a new police helicopter for the Wide Bay and Sunshine Coast region. This will build on my work fighting to deliver new police stations in Cooroy and Nambour which will ensure that our local police have the best tools available to keep our community safe. You can sign my petition for a new police helicopter at robertskeltonmp.com.au/ new-police-helicopter-

Backing our farmers Queensland farmers are among the best in the world, and they deserve to earn a fair return for keeping food on our plates. That’s why our government has just announced we’ll develop a best practice production cost model. It means farmers can access the information and training to get the best deal for themselves, their families and their farms. We’ll also hold workshops in each major growing region to upskill farmers to better advocate for themselves in those big business talks.

Energy and Jobs Plan

I spent the last week in Parliament advocating for our world-leading Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan. Our Energy and Jobs Plan will deliver investment in cheap, reliable, publicly owned renewables. This will create 100,000 good secure jobs and keep the electricity rebate that provides vital cost of living relief. All of that is at risk under the LNP, who voted to privatise our energy grid just last week. They will cut investment in renewables, cut jobs and increase power prices.

Arts in Noosa

THE SHIRE of Noosa is getting back to business with the dust slowly settling following the declaration of the recent local government election. Diversity, along with Noosa’s cultural identity, connection to each other and to place sits at the very centre of who we are and what we collectively value.

The significance of our heritage is reflected in the Heritage Levy that appears on the Noosa Council Rates Notice. Together with the Noosa Cultural Plan they harness and direct resources, as well as energy, and are supported by stakeholder’s who support the vision for a flourishing future for arts, culture and heritage. Heritage, Arts and Culture in conjunction with our creative Arts industries plays a vital role in bringing together our collective stories and identity while contributing to

economic development, innovation and diversification of local business.

ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day Service remains significant in our local area with our community respectfully coming together to remember the courage of those who gave their lives. The Service Clubs, monuments, and parks throughout the Noosa Shire outwardly display the value we as a community place on our history and heritage.

Art in Conflict is a new touring exhibition of contemporary art from the collection of the Australian War Memorial. Three major new bodies of work debut in this exhibition being held at the Noosa Regional Gallery from 20th April to 9th June 2024. A showcase of diverse responses to war, the exhibition includes more than seventy paintings, drawings, films, prints, photography, and sculptures. Contemporary artists’ responses to conflict bring to light untold stories, reveal neglected histories and deepen our understanding of Australia’s experience of conflict, both past and present.

The exhibition highlights how war art can lead us to consider different ways of thinking about current and recent conflicts.

The acceleration from a 1.4% growth rate in Q4 2023 to 1.6% in Q1 2024 highlights a pivotal shift towards the lower end of the market in most capital cities, driven by the increasing pursuit of affordability and tighter lending standards.

Amid these broader trends, our Noosa Hinterland market has displayed exceptional performance. This is particularly evident in Hinternoosa’s recent sales, which underscore the vibrant activity and

levels of demand:

• 16 Yatama Pl, Cooroibah, sold before auction.

• 29-43 Dierdre Dr, Eumundi went under contract in just two weeks.

• 213 Black Pinch Rd, Black Mountain attracted multiple offers and went under contract in 10 days.

• 1407 Cooroy Belli Creek Rd, Belli Park, under contract in 7 days.

• 32 Justin Rd, Doonan, stood out as the most

viewed property in QLD on realestate.com.au when it went live and attracted over 60 groups to inspect in the first week. It went under contract in 10 days with multiple offers.

These successes not only highlight the robust interest in Noosa Hinterland properties, but also Hinternoosa’s expertise in navigating the market.

As we look forward to the rest of 2024, with predictions of interest rate reductions

expected to further increase buyer activity, the NoosaHinterland remains an attractive prospect for both current and aspiring residents. Savvy buyers are acting now. As owner of Hinternoosa, Sirah Robb has a true passion for providing a platform for her team to reach their full potential in offering industry leading client services and achieving above market results.
