Happy 100th Rosa

Cr Frank Wilkie and Cr Sandy Bolton with Rosa

On the 14th November 2014, a very special woman, Rosa (Rosie) Lamont, turned 100. Rosa’s parents Exavier & Carolina Wyss sailed from Switzerland to New Zealand in 1904. They took up dairy farming and had two daughters Eileen & Rosa. In 1927, they came to Australia and settled in Queensland. Their Swiss friends had a job waiting for them at Wahpunga, Kin Kin on Noonan’s farm. They moved into a new home and spent a few happy years before Rosa’s father died. Things were tough but Rosa said people were very kind and they somehow survived. Rosa has many tales to tell of the fun they had, hard work, dances and riding horses for miles to the coast for a swim. Rosa then moved to Cooroy and worked at the hotel (as a waitress) which was situated where “Railway Square” is now. She met and married John Lamont in 1935, had two daughters, Marie and Joyce (deceased). The family tree continued to grow from there with 6 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 13 great, great grandchildren and 1 great, great, great grandchild. Rosa and family wish to thank the many hundreds, who came to her morning tea, sent flowers and cards from near and far, phoned and visited her and made her 100th Birthday so special. Her house looked like a garden and was quite overwhelming for Rosa who never knew how many friends she has. It was a very fitting celebration for an extraordinary woman.

Seventh straight dividend for bank share holders IT’S been said that you can’t run a successful business in an unsuccessful community. That seems to be the ultimate compliment paid to our Sunshine Coast community, because while some businesses continue to work through its ongoing economic challenges it’s a far different story for investors in three of the coast’s Community Bank branches. In fact it’s developed into an ongoing celebration of a home-grown Sunshine Coast success story. Just over 700 shareholders, who have supported the Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin Community Bank branches since their inception have now received their seventh dividend in as many years. Rick Cooper, Chairman of Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited (SCCFSL), who own and operate the Cooroy, and

Marcoola Community Bank branches, said shareholders have now each received a share of the $130,242 the total dividend, based on 7.64 cents per $1.00 share of 1,704,238 fully franked shares when the dividend was issued in December. “Receiving a nice dividend payment is a great way for our company’s investors to start 2015. This latest result is a culmination of a lot of hard work and local support from our surrounding communities. As we continue to say, bank with us and everybody benefits,” Mr. Cooper shared. “The directors of SCCFSL - our Community Bank Company, decided the dividend is a fair and just reward to all the shareholders who initially funded the establishment of the branches, and who have been enthusiastically watching their development.

“Business revenue has grown every year since our inception in 2002, and it’s another great result for our shareholders and our board, branch managers and staff who are all very proud of our continuing work in our communities. Without share holders’ support, our branches simply wouldn’t exist,” Mr. Cooper added. Cooroy Community

Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards said the shareholders won’t be the only locals to benefit from the seventh dividend. “The company’s remaining profits are being channelled back into communities via a range of donations and sponsorships. By 30 June 2015, the total funds given back to our communities will

have exceeded $1.7 million,” Mr. Edwards said. “In coming months the board will continue its program of community grants that will release further funds to assist with a wide range of projects. We’re really proud to be involved with a bank that’s giving locals a real say in the shaping of their own communities,” Mr. Edwards concluded.

news Cooroy Highway Service Centre meeting a success

COOROY RAG OVER 100 residents listened with interest as Peter Zipf and his planning team described their proposal for a highway service centre and tourist park at the southern entrance to Cooroy during a town meeting in the Cooroy Memorial Hall on the evening of 10 December. The appropriate Council planner also attended as did Councillors Wellington and Bolton. As a precursor to the public consultation phase of the application which begins in January, attendees raised a

number of issues including concerns about the effects of storm water, traffic issues with the Elm Street railway bridge, noise abatement to nearby residences, effects on existing town businesses, and the need for such a complex at the proposed location. This proposal seeks a major change in the local planning scheme (currently it is zoned rural) to develop land that runs from the corner of Myall Street and Ferrells Road, along the southern side of Myall Street

(opposite the golf course) to the new Bruce Highway roadworks. The application is for a mixed use development comprised of tourist accommodation (including site manager, amenities building, 10 cabins and 27 van parks), a combined 24-7 service station and fast food outlet, including drivethrough, a retail food store, self-storage units, and a four-bay manual carwash. As part of the application, a detailed town planning report has been commissioned by

the developer. A revised site plan has recently been submitted which indicates a reduction in the scale of the development. Stage One of the proposal includes the service station, food shop, take-away outlet, and the tourist park. Stage Two is the carwash, and Stage Three is the selfstorage sheds. An economic assessment of the effects on Cooroy’s current retail mix has been presented to Council as part of the application. Noosa Council has be-

gun its assessment of this application and is looking at the economic impacts, traffic flows, acoustic issues with nearby residential areas, waste management, and whether the proposed tourist park, car wash and self-storage operations are best sited here. The community will have a chance to comment on the application and before this CARA is hosting a General Meeting about the proposal where the developer will answer questions from residents and others interested.

OVER the next few months Noosa Council wants to explore a range of options for the Butter Factory’s future so they can develop a new direction that meets hinterland needs, is actively supported by the community and is more viable. Council has called on the public for input. The first major proposal by Bruce Cresswell and Jeanette

Alfredson seeks to continue the interest and passion of current users in the future of Cooroy Butter Factory. A component of the solution is to build an Interpretation Centre that will attract tourism to the hinterland as well as the greater Noosa Shire by building on Noosa’s reputation as a tourist destination. At the meeting 25 November in the Butter Factory council staff gave a

presentation on five favoured proposals from the list of submissions. Lead concepts: 1. U3A Cooroy subbranch (U3A Noosa) proposal: Establish a sub-branch of U3A Noosa within the Butter Factory, offering classes and activities. It could incorporate existing Butter Factory activities and extend to other groups. 2.Community man-

aged: For example this could be the Lower Mill Board managing on behalf of the community. 3.Council managed: This would basically maintain the status quo. 4. Interpretation centre, (Bruce Cresswell, Jeanette Alfredson): Create an interpretation centre using the historic Cooroy Butter Factory sitting at the geographical centre of the Noosa community biosphere. It

would extend the existing arts components by adding new segments of nature, indigenous and heritage tourism. 5. Centre for ceramic excellence (Rowley Drysdale): To establish a local, national and internationally acclaimed Cooroy Butter Factory Centre for Ceramic Excellence which would incorporate exhibitions, retail sales, workshops and accredited classes.

“We wish you a Merry Christmas” to residents of Kabara Aged Care Home THERE’S something rather charming about the sound of young

voices singing Christmas Carols. And in the last couple of weeks

the voices of the Grade 3 class from Noosa Christian College,

Cooroy were heard in the hallways of three aged care homes across the Sunshine Coast, including Kabara in Cooroy. The students had practiced their Christmas Carols Medley for a few months under the guidance of their class teacher and pianist, Mrs Angela Gray. “This is an annual community service activity for our Grade 3 class but this year I was so delighted to watch them engage with the residents after their presentation. They chatted to the older

folk, gave them their handmade gifts and several students received hugs” she said. Reflecting on the experience she added, “It’s such a simple, but significant blessing to share the joy of Christmas through music”. Staff from OzCare in Tewantin, Kabara in Cooroy and the Adventist Retirement Village (ARV) in Caloundra all shared their appreciation for the visit and welcomed the opportunity for a visit again in 2015.

Australia and Abroad Australia and Abroad will be held at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery from 10 Jan to 10 February. The exhibition is showing works by two local artists, Natalie Barlow and Jeff Fraser. Natalie will be exhibiting paintings in oil and watercolour of the Australia landscape, wildlife, as well as inspirations from her travels in Africa and India. Jeff Fraser is a wood turner and spoon maker. His bowls and spoons are an example of recycling a piece of old wood into something of great use and a pleasure to look at. Natalie finds living in the Hinterland inspiring and peaceful which motivates her to continue to paint the bush and birds which surround her.

Where’s the rolled up Rag? OUR favourite poet is a bit under the weather, So to show our appreciation we all pulled this together. It took longer than we thought to make a little rhyme, And trust us Jim, we struggled, as we were running short on time. I know you said to use one, that you had written earlier this year, But we thought we’d use this space, to send YOU a little Christmas cheer. So we wish you all the very best, and I’m afraid try as you might, I refuse to accept your subtle hints, you’re not resigning without a fight. As much as our readers love your poems, we love you even more. And we sincerely hope come Christmastime you’re not still feeling poor. Merry Christmas, Jim, get well soon, love from Brenda, Janet and Kerry (The Ragettes)

WELL, how amazing was Christmas in Cooroy this year? Our wonderful community event just seems to get better and better every year and our Community Bank branch loves being part of it. Christmas means different things to different people in our community depending on your beliefs, but one beautiful part of Christmas is spending time with family and friends and giving gifts to others. Our beaches and parks are usually packed with families en-

joying the day swimming and playing games on the beach or in a local park. Our homes are generally bursting at the seams with food, family and friends. But Christmas can also be a stressful time for families. Especially given the ongoing economic climate means a lot of families may be unable to find those extra dollars to participate in the celebration of Christmas. As I mentioned in my last column, one way to plan ahead for Christmas and the extra financial pressure it brings is to

open up a Christmas Club account with your Community Bank branch. A Christmas Club account is typically an interest bearing passbook account with no or low fees, that you are able to deposit into during the year but can’t withdraw from until a set period. This set withdrawal period is usually November 1 to January 31, so you catch those post Christmas sales. You can arrange a transfer from your savings account or even from your pay office into the Christmas Club ac-

count and that way it is like a forced savings. Set down a budget of how much you think you can put aside each pay day, it does not have to be large, but it does have to be a realistic amount, because if you need to withdraw the funds usually a penalty fee will be applied to the account. Why not ask you bank for a Christmas Club account and start early for next year’s celebrations? So in closing, on behalf of all our team here I wish you and all your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

If you have any questions about opening a Christmas Club account or would like to discuss any other banking matter, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

New program makes financial sense A NEW program at Cooroy library will help adults make better sense of their finances. Dollars Making Sense has been made possible through a $46,000 Financial Literacy Australia grant. Noosa Council Libraries and Galleries Manager Kerri Contini said the initiative

would build on Council’s literacy and numeracy support programs. “It will explore dayto-day financial issues with the aim of improving participants’ understanding of money and their ability to make informed financial decisions,” Ms Contini said. The Library is

seeking potential tutors to deliver the program who will undertake 10-12 weeks of training in early 2015. “We’re really pleased to be able to deliver this program in conjunction with Financial Literacy Australia and we’d like to hear from anyone interested in becoming

a tutor,” Ms Contini said. “Financial literacy is especially important in this age of credit cards and electronic banking with individuals facing a plethora of complex financial contracts whether buying a phone or renting a house. “Dollars Making Sense will help

empower those members of the community who are struggling with dayto-day financial issues.” To volunteer as a tutor, or for more information about the program, email libraries@noosa.qld.gov .au<mailto:libraries@ noosa.qld.gov.au> or phone (07) 5329 6534.

Virtual Cooroy now as good as the real thing

Congratulations Ray & Dawn Kelly who celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on December 12, 2014 with family and friends at the Appolonian Hotel. Many more to come! Lots of Love Nicole, Jason, Sharon and families

EXCITING things have been afoot in the virtual world with Cooroy’s online presence getting a revamp and upgrade. The highly popular Cooroy website has had a top to tail refurbishment with a great new look and more features than ever before. This website attracts approximately 40,000 visits per month which is a great achievement and promotes Cooroy in a very positive way. The most popular pages are the What’s On Calendar and the Business Directory and these pages are likely to get even more usage now they have a new look and easier navigation. In addition, the Cooroy Facebook page has been a great success. In just its first year it has nearly reached 2,000 fans and is always a great source of information about what is happening in and around town. The Cooroy App is also constantly growing with more people downloading it onto their mobile devices and more information about events and specials being updated every day. When you add in the printed guide to Cooroy, the Kurui which is going to be redesigned and printed early in the New Year there is a fantastic wealth of information available to visitors and locals alike. The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce proudly runs all of these projects for the town making these great community assets that reflect the diversity and natural assets of Cooroy and surrounding areas. The benefits are obvious for busi-

nesses too as the Cooroy Chamber’s Platinum membership package now provides one of the most comprehensive benefits and advertising packages of any Chamber with promotion across all of these platforms for the one low fee of $270/year. “All of these initiatives are aimed at promoting Cooroy to locals and visitors alike. We are really lucky to have just about everything you need right at your fingertips and our aim with the Cooroy website, App, Facebook and Kurui is to encourage people to shop locally and support our local businesses so that Cooroy will continue to be a strong and thriving community into the future,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Danielle Taylor. “The Cooroy Chamber is a really strong chamber with over 130 members and it has been running as a not for profit organisation for over 30 years achieving a multitude of projects during that time. It is because of the fantastic support from the businesses, a huge volunteer effort and great support from all levels of government that the Chamber continues to go from strength to strength. One of the best things you can do for your business is join as not only does it benefit your business but it benefits the community too.” For more information about Cooroy and the Chamber visit www.cooroy.com.au or www.facebook.com/Cooroy or download the Cooroy App at www.thecooroyapp.com

Good turnout for the 2nd Rural Futures field day FOLLOWING the successful first meeting in September, we had 40 people turn up on Saturday 29 November at the Rural Futures Centre in Pomona to hear several interesting speakers and discuss several topics based around the theme It’s That Time of the Year. After an introduction on rural sustainability by Cr Sandy Bolton, Peta O’Neill, a volunteer Community Educator

with QFES, showed two videos on Bush Fire Survival Planning and was keen to point out that the recent rain was no reason to stop preparing for another fire season and that there is a real need for everyone to have a bushfire plan for action should a fire threaten your property. Graeme Elphinstone, a Grazing Lands Extension Officer, returned to Country Noosa along with MRCCC expert Brad Wedlock, to give

another entertaining and educational talk on Dry Season Management of Beef Cattle. His talk was complete with facts and figures concerning the economics of feed selection on various grazing land types, when to sell cattle, which cattle to sell, and pointed out the FutureBeef website with its mine of information. Landcare general manager Phil Moran’s

talk on How Landcare can help with sustainable farming – a case study and approach to grants, gave plenty of pointers on the topic based on Phil’s years of directing landowners to appropriate funding sources. Finally, Dr Garry Bright, a local holistic vet, delivered a very interesting talk on alternative veterinary practices which included acupuncture and treatment of the animal owner as

part of the cure. Coming Up 1. World-renowned regenerative farmer Joel Salatin is visiting Noosa to hold a masterclass titled “You Can Farm” on 28 February and we plan to organise an evening “primer” on holistic farming shortly before his visit. Details to come. 2. We plan to run a field day on 21st March to cover pasture plant identification and a riparian zone case study.

Generosity in 1,300 shoe boxes arrives in Timor CHRISTMAS has once again arrived early in East Timor. Educational care parcels in the form of 1,300 shoe boxes left from Cooroy, Tewantin and Pacific Paradise State Schools in June have made it through storms and a school-term break to arrive in Timor Leste. There may have been delays in the transfer of the precious cargo, but thanks to determined community effort the

educational parcels arrived at Sao Miguel (St. Michael) at Raikotu, a school about 30 minutes west of Dili where thousands of students were waiting eagerly. The school has about 150 kindergarten students, 250 of primary age and some 200 junior high school kids. With the help of the Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank in Tewantin, Cooroy and Marcoola the Rotary

Clubs of Noosa, Cooroy and Mooloolaba , the school was identified as a community school with no help from the ministry of education in Timor. Each parcel took the form of a decorated shoe box with enclosed items including exercise books, rulers, erasers, pens and pencils, all topped off with a personal item from each student from Cooroy and Tewantin State

Schools to the child opening it at the other end. The Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank in Cooroy, Tewantin and Marcoola and the Rotary Clubs of Noosa and Cooroy shared the shipment costs because both organisations saw an opportunity to support a cause that would instil a sense of responsibility into each student who compiled these special gifts. Cooroy State School Principal, Des Deighton said learning of the arrival of the shoe boxes has brought an emotional reaction from his students and will really bring home the spirit of the project to the hundreds of students who got involved at the school. “The kids had a ball putting the care parcels together and it’s great to see their hard work and the fabulous support of their families, the Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank and Rotary have finally made their way into the hands of the kids who need them most,’’ Mr. Deighton said.

“It’s great to see their thoughtfulness come back in the form of heart warming photos and video. We were so excited to see the parcels in the hands of the kids who need them most and we’re excited and proud to have been part of it. Every shoe box was personally decorated and had educational items to further the education of a child less fortunate than themselves. Each student also enclosed

something small of theirs such as a soft toy or tennis ball. It added something simple but personal to each box,” he said. Manager of Cooroy Community Bank branch, Geoff Edwards said he feels the project has continued to build on something special. “Our Community Banks are all about giving back and in this case the community recipients have been international ones! This project

started in 2008 and has now grown to include 3 state schools. “This is about community partnership. We’re delighted to collaborate with the Rotary who always want to help. We all helped collect and pack the shoe boxes in June, and it’s great to now recognise so many of them now the video and photos of their arrival has made it back to us. We all love it and will do it all again in 2015!” Geoff said.

SUSTAINABLE the winning entry in the inaugural Eumundi Sculpture Prize was unveiled by four locals whose families have strong connections with early Eumundi on Friday, 12 December. The Eumundi Sculpture Prize of $15,000 sponsored by Experience Eumundi was awarded to Hew Chee Fong and L M Noonan (known as Fong and Loretta) following a national competition organised by the Foundation for Culture and Arts Eumundi (known as the Eumundi Foundation). The theme of the competition was to pay homage to Eumundi’s early days as a timber town. Ten finalists were chosen by three professional art judges and each artist created a maquette, a scaled down version of their proposed finished sculpture. These maquettes including the winner’s entry are on display at Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre. Fong and Loretta have successfully manufactured, project managed and personally installed 28 public art projects in Australia including several on the Sunshine Coast. During the same period, several large scale private commissions have been installed here and overseas. For the most part, their public artworks such as Sustainable are designed and manufactured at their Peachester studio on the Sunshine Coast. They have maintained independent exhibiting careers in public and private galleries, collaborating mainly on larger projects. Chair of the Eumundi Foundation Clytie Glass said, “Fong and Loretta as well being incredible sculpture artists are also Sunshine Coast devotees and it has been a joy for the Foundation working with them to have the sculpture installed in Dick Caplick Park. We are thrilled also that Sunshine Coast Council as well as a sponsor for the Prize has accepted Sustainable into the Sunshine Coast Public Art Collection and will therefore maintain the sculpture in Caplick Park for its lifetime, expected to be at least 15 years.

IF you have a child finishing high school this year, you could find yourself with a new spring in your step come January, particularly with private schools costing as much as $30,000 a year. And if you’re close to paying off your home loan you’ll start noticing even more of a difference to your bottom line. It’s time to think seriously about how to use your newfound disposable income to secure your financial future. One door closes, another one opens A useful way to think about your personal finances is in terms of separate ‘cash buckets’. For a long time, you’ve needed to allocate a substantial amount of cash to immediate priori-

ties—buckets for today marked ‘school fees’ and ‘home loan repayments’. But now you’ve got a bit more breathing space to think about tomorrow. Perhaps you’ve already allocated some of your extra cash to go towards the buckets marked ‘new car’ or ‘overseas trip’. But it’s also important to think about your future...and that of your kids. No more empty nesters? If you’re expecting some breathing space after the HSC, here’s the reality check. Expenses don’t necessarily end with the 18th birthday party. So if you need quick access to your funds to help put the kids through uni, get on the property

RSL Community Link is a Returned and Services League national remembrance project dedicated to keeping alive the names, memories and deeds of departed Australian or Allied service veterans no matter when or where they

served or when they died. RSL Community Link is not a fundraising project; there are no annual fees, meetings, commitments or requests. RSL Community Link enables people of all ages to attend RSL, school and community

remembrance services as the personal representative of a departed veteran. The representative proudly wears a ‘Veteran’s Memorial Plaque’ which shows the basic details of the veteran’s service and includes a full-colour ribbon bar indicated the medals issued to the veteran. A ‘Representative’s Link Card’ is worn to show the representative’s relationship to the veteran. This representation includes the opportunity to take part in the Cooroy Anzac Day march. If you don’t have the departed veteran’s basic service and medal details, any information

you need can be obtained for free from Australian Government agencies so check the Research Tips on the Community Link section of the Queensland RSL website www.rslqld.org If you don’t have access to the internet or you encounter difficulties with you researching, a Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub Branch member will be able to offer you advice. There is a once-only cost of $19 to cover manufacture of the Veteran’s Memorial Plaque and the Representative’s Link Card. It is quite common for more than one family member to represent the

same veteran – for example several grandchildren all representing the same grandparent at an Anzac Day ceremony and march. This requires the purchase of multiple Veteran’s Memorial Plaques and Representative’s Link Cards. The Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub Branch is pleased to be able to offer you participation in RSL Community Link. We believe it is a very meaningful and personal way for people to be involved in remembering those who served their countr5y and have since passed away. For more information phone 5447 6131. End of year finishes on a high

COOROY State School’s year has finished on a high with a great end of year concert and celebration and Year 6&7 Farewell. These events capped off a terrific which has seen the school receive many acknowledgements including being the Number 1 primary school in the world in the Language Perfect competition. Recently at the end of year concert, parents

and the community were entertained by a variety of acts from all classes as well as the school’s instrumental band, string ensemble and choirs. As well as the great entertainment students also had an opportunity to go on rides and try to dunk the staff on a dunking machine. Students queued to have the chance to hit the target and drop their teacher into the water.

Everything for Christmas at

The longest queues happened when Deputy Principal Karina Honeywell and Principal Des Deighton took their turn. On Thursday 11 December, the school community officially farewelled the students of Years 6 & 7 as they transition to high school. The ceremony which was led by the student leaders was extremely well attended.

A life lesson

In his address, Principal Des Deighton congratulated not only the elected student leaders, but all the students on the fine leadership they had shown throughout the year. He reminded them to go and enjoy everything Junior Secondary has to offer but also to remember to work to the best of their ability. Mr Deighton also acknowledged the work of the year 6 and 7 teachers and in particular Sandra – Lynne Underhill. “Mrs Underhill has taught hundreds of Year 7 students over the 16 years she has taught year 7 at Cooroy SS and has been a tremendous influence on their lives,” he said. In 2015 she will be teaching year 4. Students were presented with academic, cultural, sporting and social awards at the ceremony which was attended by over 500 people. The school has been supported by many wonderful sponsors, including the Cooroy Rag, and Mr Deighton thanked them for their support.

A NOOSA District State High School Year 8 class was provided with an invaluable life lesson on empathy and the value of racial and cultural diversity as they met their pen pals from English as a Second Language (ESL) school Milpera State High face-to-face yesterday. Year 8 SOSE and English teacher Bridge Muir arranged for her class, 8C to begin a letter exchange with students at Milpera State High School from the beginning of Term 4 as a part of their study of the novel The Diary of Ali Ismail Refugee in English class. 8C were provided with an interesting insight into life as newly arrived teenage immigrant in Australia, and they found it fascinating that many of their hobbies, pursuits and life goals of the students from Milpera SHS were similar to that of their own. NDSHS Year 8 student Jarod Nettheim was moved to read in his pen pal’s letter that had he not escaped Afghanistan and come to Australia that he would be dead.

War, fear of persecution and religious discrimination were concepts very foreign to 8C and trying to imagine other teenagers experiencing such hardships was difficult for them to comprehend. 8C met their pen pal’s for the first time, spending their first lesson at Milpera together learning more about each other, including how to pronounce names; favourite foods; how they travel to school; and their pets. The students spent the afternoon in the library, with 8C students partnered up with a Milpera student who they assisted one-onone with their reading.

The day at Milpera was a rewarding and very positive experience for both the students from Noosa District State High School and Milpera. Cross-cultural friendships were made and the Noosa District SHS students learnt about lives and experiences vastly different from their own, whilst Milpera students were assisted with their literacy and learnt firsthand about life as a Sunshine Coast teenager. Perceptions and preconceived ideas 8C had about immigrations and refugees were challenged and ideas evolved.

Cooking tips for Christmas fare TURKEY: 1. OVEN: Make sure you have the right turkey for your oven. This may seem basic, but a 5kg turkey actually won’t fit in a 3kg oven. 2. COOKING TIME: Remember every kilogram is 1 hour of cooking. eg/ if you have a 3kg turkey it needs to cook for 3 hours at 180 degrees 3. MOIST: Combine butter, salt and spices such as rosemary and sage and put this under the skin of the turkey. This will ensure the meat doesn’t dry out and is kept moist. 4. GOLDEN: During the last 20 minutes turn up the oven to 200 degrees. This will make the skin golden. 5. REST: When you take the turkey out of the oven, rest it UPSIDE DOWN on a cooling rack. This allows all the juices to flow into the turkey breasts, ensuring the best possible flavour. 6. CRISPY: Once the turkey has rested for 20 mins, put it back in the over for an extra 5 mins. This will turn the golden skin into the perfect crispy skin. HAM BOOK: Book the ham in advance. If you haven’t already done it, do it! SKIN: The first step is to remove the skin and score the ham 1cm apart. In each score, place a clove. This is for decoration but will also add flavour. GLAZE: Keep the glaze really simple. All you need is brown sugar and a little vinegar for a sweet and sour effect. Glaze all over, bake the oven at 160 degrees for 90 minutes and add glaze every 20 minutes until completion.

text just that once because you’re in a rush. Driving is about having the right attitude and having the mindset that every time you get into your car you are potentially taking your life into your own hands simply by making a bad choice at the wrong time. I personally have seen the results of these bad choices. Normal everyday people, who got into their cars like they do every other day not knowing that they were about to become a statistic. Last Christmas holiday’s seven people were killed in the Central Police Region and the Queensland Police Service has set the target of zero people to be killed on our roads this Christmas New Year period. The Queensland Police Service makes no apology for taking a zero tolerance to people who breach any of the Fatal Five of offences. Cooroy Police will be out every day and night targeting drivers not doing the right thing so please do the right thing and avoid

THE 2014 Christmas and New Year Holiday period is upon us and the push to keep the travelling public safe has kicked into full gear with all available police out on the roads targeting the fatal five causes of fatal and serious traffic accidents. For those of you who don’t know what the Fatal Five of traffic offences are I can advise that they are; Drink Driving, Speeding, Seatbelts, Driving whilst fatigued and driving whilst distracted and lack of attention. As of the 11th of December, 2014, 217 Queensland Family have suffered the horrendous situation of losing a loved one to a road accident with 95% of these accidents caused by one or more of the fatal five. Road safety is about people being individually responsible for their own driving habits and taking responsibility for always doing the right thing on the roads. It is not ok just break the law a little bit. It’s not ok to just speed a little bit or just talk on the phone for a minute or answer that

a fine or worse a serious traffic incident. Of particular concern of late has been the number of suicides and attempted suicides that we have been attending. Several people around Cooroy have taken their own lives lately which is a huge concern and very distressing for the family and friends. Can I ask that anyone who is feeling depressed and to the point of giving up that they take the step of asking for help. There are many agencies out there who are well equipped to help so

don’t try and shoulder the burden by yourself and know when to ask for help. If in need of some advice people needing help can call Lifeline on 131114 or call your local Police Station for a referral to a help agency or in an emergency Police are able to respond and call in other First Response organisations to assist. Locals would be aware that the Cooroy Butchers shop was badly damaged by fire a couple of months ago with the Fire being deemed as deliberately lit by fire investi-

gators. Police are following up on various leads with good information coming in from members of the Cooroy Community which hopefully will lead to an arrest over this matter. Any persons out there who has any information whatsoever about the origins of this fire are urged to call the local Police Station on 54425030 or call Crime Stoppers on 1800333000 if you wish to remain anonymous and wish to obtain a cash reward for your information. Noosa Hinterland Shares in QLD’s Property Market Recovery THE Noosa Hinterland is among the state’s regional areas reaping the benefits of growing confidence in Queensland’s residential property market – with strong house and land sales recorded over the last 12 months. Hinternoosa Estate Agent Murray Brown said Cooroy in particular was proving a highly popular choice for buyers with significant improvements in key market indicators over the 2014 year. “In terms of recovery – one of the stand out areas of improvement for Cooroy is in the number of residential lots sold in 2014,” Mr Brown said. “According to RP Data 27 residential lots have sold in the Cooroy area in 2014 so far – more than double the result in 2013. “In fact, the results have been so strong that we now face a shortfall in available residential land locally. “This basically means that anyone with an interest in buying residential land and building a new home really has to act fast.” Mr Brown said current residential land available in Cooroy was spread across three key developments, Erindale Park, Cordwood and Brialka. “Cordwood has about eight blocks remaining and Brialka just three,” Mr Brown said. “Erindale Park has sold six out of seven available lots this year and is offering the next release of 4 lots on a pre-sale basis, to provide buyers with more choice in the Cooroy market.” Mr Brown said the recovery in local residential land sales was on the back of strong state-wide results in 2014, which REIQ predicted would increase further in 2015. “REIQ’s latest research shows house sales activity across SE Queensland continued to improve over the September quarter with preliminary sales numbers up five per cent across Greater Brisbane. The Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast recorded an increase of seven and three per cent respectively,” Mr Brown said. “On the back of consecutive quarterly increases in sales volumes and strong increases in median house prices – the property cycle is definitely rising.” Mr Brown said with all the indicators pointing upwards – it was a good time for people wanting a new home to jump into the market. “Release Four Erindale Park, known as Masonary Street, has house and land packages available for purchase

off the plan - allowing buyers the chance to lock in prices now before the market rises further,” Mr Brown said. “It also gives buyers time to plan a new home, or even sell an existing property, without worrying about increasing prices. “House and land packages along Masonary Street have been developed in conjunction with awardwinning local builder Ausmar Homes. Homes in this prestigious pocket are designed for buyers looking for luxurious internal finishes, top-of-the-range kitchen appliances, stone bench tops and premium bathroom fit out, all set amongst the privacy and tranquility of Erindale Park’s vast parkland area.” House and land packages along Masonary Street range from the 246 square metre Alexandria Plantation priced at $482,250 to the 274 square metre Waitara priced at $524,160 Mr Brown said Ausmar’s house and land packages set a high benchmark for the Masonary Street precinct, however buyers were welcome to create their own customised designs using a builder of choice. “Buyers are not required to use Ausmar, however there is an expectation that homes demonstrate superior quality, with excellence in design and style to maintain the overall standard in the Masonary Street cul-de-sac in Cooroy.” For more information about Erindale Park visit www.erindalepark.com.au or phone David Crerar from hinternoosa on 0418 712 054 or (07) 5447 7000 or email:davidc@hinternoosa.com.au

Christmas in Cooroy 2014

FRIDAY night kicked off with the opening of the Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy “Remember When…” photo exhibition in the Butter Factory Arts Centre with Jacob Baeklund and Stuart Chapman taking out 1st and 2nd in the junior category and Andrea Ames and Leo Wiles taking out the senior category prizes. The exhibition continues on until 24 January 2015. At the turning on of the beautiful Ri-con Christmas tree everyone had an absolute ball and were witness to a Christmas miracle as snow fell on Maple Street at the foot of the Sunshine Coast’s most spectacular tree! The Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group Great Santa Race raised $1,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation with siblings Sam Blake and Alexandra Blake taking out first male and first female and Andrew Cowan and Jay Clark receiving 2nd and 3rd prizes. The street was lined with people and umbrellas to see the ever popular Bendigo Bank street parade and the floats were of a spectacular standard this year. Over 40 businesses and community groups participated and the Wild West theme was a big hit. Tadpoles Early Learning Centre snatched the

title of Best Float this year but it was a tough competition with Cooroora Woodworkers, Cooroy Uniting Church, Lakeridge Health and Beauty and the Christmas Crackers all close on their tails in the scoring stakes according to judges Cr Frank Wilkie and Cr Sandy Bolton. The East Side Traders were ecstatic to retain their title in the East versus West Tug of War for the third year running. The free activities had cues of people all evening with the free Cooroy Rag rides, the Cooroy Family Practice sponsored face painting and the Bucking Bull sponsored by Gelignite Jacks and Cooroy Poolwerx all enormous hits with the crowds. “There is a long list of people to thank for this event including over 50 sponsors, the thousands of people that come to the event despite the rain, the volunteers, the Christmas in Cooroy committee, Rotary Club of Cooroy, Noosa SES, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, Cooroy Police and our MCs who all gave up copious amounts of time. It’s the fantastic community spirit that Cooroy has that makes this event so special,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce president, Danielle Taylor. How to avoid burn out during the silly season ONCE again Christmas is knocking on our doors. In just a few weeks we will be facing highly stressful periods organising yet another unforgettable festive season for our friends and families. We will be organising or family to come and stay with us, organising a massive feasts, presents, and overall a more remarkable experience than in previous years. Unfortunately those experiences come at a cost, and usually also involve eating way too much yummy foods, drinking heaps of alcohol and disagreements with the family. To avoid those kinds of outcomes here are some tips on how to stay on track and not getting completely drained, so we can start the New Year on a positive note. 1. When planning a Christmas feast, create a plan. Write down those ideas that are in your head, so you can actually look at it when its right in front of you. In this way you have clearer idea of what is achievable and realistic, and you can cross off the things that would create only problems and stress for you. 2. Keep it simple and plan from the heart, If you are just trying to impress your family, you just set yourself up for failure, which create regret for you, and your family will not be impressed with you at all. 3. Spend the money you can afford. Nothing worse than starting a new year with your credit card completely maxed out. 4. Presents don’t need to be massive, and expensive. Think of a creative way to give a present. For example, pick out some old photos and put them in a frame with a nice personal note. 5. Start early with your planning

and use the time when nobody else is in the shopping centres yet, to buy your gifts. 6. Don’t be afraid to ask your family for help to get things organised or to get some ideas. If your family is involved in the arrangements, they are less likely to critise you for your ‘poor’ performance afterwards, plus it brings more joy and a brings the family closer together. 7. Christmas is the time to drink more alcohol than usual, so stay well hydrated with water, that keeps your body happy , which also means you can easier deal with challenges. 8. Most likely you will be challenged with heaps of yummy food temptations, so make some time to go for walks. You can motivate your entire family to go walking or even for a fun afternoon playing games in the garden or the park. 9. When you start feeling like everything is getting out of your hands, step back and take a deep breath. If you are still not feeling better, take 10 mins and lie in your bed with your eyes closed and just focussing on your breathing. I promise you will feel much better afterwards, and you can take a new approach to solve your problems. 10. If you are still completely stressed out you can give us a call, for a treatment to restore your well being, we will be on call during Christmas and New Years, helping you to start the New Year in a healthy and happy way. If you need some help with coping with stress, call the team at Maple Street Acupuncture and Natural Medicine, phone 5442 5526.

Courtney joins Hinteractive team COURTNEY Vella, a local Cooroy girl, has returned home to work at Hinteracitve Physio after completing her tertiary education at Griffith University on the Gold Coast. Her love for physiotherapy blossomed at a young age and proved her interest by graduating top of her Health class from Noosa District State High School in 2009. Keen to further her education, Courtney moved to Gold Coast to complete a Bachelor of Exercise Science and Master of Physiotherapy degree. Throughout her education, Courtney participated in yoga, pilates, martial arts, musical events and multiple volunteering opportunities. Courtney is excited

to begin her journey as a physiotherapist at Hinteractive Physio in the new year. Owners, Rebecca and Craig Steele, are thrilled to be able to secure the services of a local person who would like to stay in the area long term. Great team work! AS many of the community may be aware Lakeridge Health and Beauty in conjunction with Variety have been fund raising for a local school. Kids & Fitness FITNESS is such an important addition to anyone’s life, kids included, says Erin Yardwood at E Fitness. “Obviously, there are certain limitations to take into account with the littlies, but it definitely doesn’t mean no exercise at all. “As childhood obesity is on the rise, with Australia being up there as having some of the highest rates in the world (how sad is that!?) it is so important for us to encourage youngsters to engage in physical activity. “At E Fitness I hold Mums & Bubs classes twice a week, which are the perfect way for Mum to workout in the presence of her bub/toddler/youngster. “It is so lovely to see the kids running around, having fun with their Mum and sometimes even mimicking the exercises. It’s super cute seeing a 20 month old doing squats or a 2 and a half year old holding a plank! “After a lot of interest and enquiries from parents

I have decided to start a weekly Kids Kickboxing class in 2015, a course that will run during the school term. “This course is open for kids aged from 4-10 (I am flexible with other ages too) and will begin on Tuesday 3rd February 2015. “Kickboxing is not only a really fun way to work out, but is also great for coordination and balance; two factors extremely important for developing children. These classes are in no way vicious or full contact, they are purely for fun and fitness. And a great team building activity too. “To ensure commitment, courses will run for an 8week block, and as spots are limited bookings are essential. I will be limiting the classes to 10 and due to popularity will aim at increasing class days in term 2.” So if you believe your little one will benefit from the fun of Erin’s kids kickboxing classes, please feel free to give her a buzz to find out more on 0423 905 744.

COOROY RAG

LOCAL girl Anna Quayle is now back on the Sunshine Coast having been based overseas for the last nine years performing professionally in musical theatre and cabaret. She’s worked on cruise ships, in panto, musicals and touring cabaret shows. And has recently returned from Tokyo Disneyland where she played the lead in two musical productions. Anna discovered the thrill of musical theatre when at age 9 she took part in ‘Oliver’ at Noosa Arts and then played the lead in Annie at BATS. She studied Music and Theatre at the University of Wollongong, and immediately after, moved to London to see if she could fulfil her dream and become a profes-

sional performer. On her second audition, she got a job as a Singer Dancer for P&O Cruises. “I could not believe my luck! P&O UK is quite a posh cruise line, so they have top entertainment. They brought in West End producers, directors and writers, so we worked with the best people. “That job was a massive learning curve. No longer was I learning a show over the course of 5 months, I was learning a complete show in 5 days! It was a definite shock to the system, I learnt more in those 8 months than I had ever done on any course.” Since then Anna has continued to work as a performer. Between jobs she enjoys being a freelance Ballet and Musical Theatre teacher and has a Ballet Teaching Diploma from the British Ballet Organization in London where she also taught ballet. Now that she is back home, Anna intends on spreading her passion for Musical Theatre to others on the Sunshine Coast, and has established the ‘Coast Academy of Song and Dance’. I’ll be holding after school classes in Cooroy, Eumundi , Noosaville, and Coolum and two Christmas Holiday Workshops at Good Shepherd Lutheran Campus, Noosaville in January We’ll be working on putting on a mini musical - Hairspray between the 5th & 9th, and Oliver from the 12th to the 16th Jan, for both boys & girls. “I can’t wait! I love to teach and am so passionate about performance; it is wonderful to watch a student’s skill level improve.” To find out more about the Musical Theatre Holiday Workshops and After School Classes, contact Anna on Ph: 0466 508 489 or Email: annaquayle@hotmail.com ‘Coast Academy of Song & Dance’ www.songanddancenoosa.com.au

Don’t let your Christmas lunch upset your pet’s wellbeing

AS the festive season commences and we begin to indulge in the abundance of sweet, rich and tasty treats on offer at the Christmas table, be extra mindful of their furry friend’s diet. While the holiday period should be fun for all your family members, including pets, pet owners must resist the temptation to slip their pets Christmas food scraps under the table, as rich foods can be detrimental to their pet’s health and wellbeing. Feeding your four-legged friend Christmas leftovers including cooked bones, ham offcuts, trimmed steak and sausages can cause problems such as obstruction and pancreatitis, which in turn could be potentially fatal and require serious medical attention. It’s important to keep your pet’s diet consistent all year round. Animals have very different digestive systems and metabolism rates compared to humans so take caution when choosing what treats to give your pet and remember that pet specific treats are always the best. Be alert when cooking the summer BBQ, as onions and garlic are both toxic to cats and

dogs and can cause liver damage. Feeding pets tomatoes can also be dangerous as they contain Atropine which causes vomiting, diarrhoea and can leave your pet feeling weak and lethargic. Christmas sweets including candy canes and chocolates are in abundance during the holiday season, however, it’s important to keep these out of reach of pets. Such treats can be toxic to animals, causing vomiting and diarrhoea and can result in seizures and heart failure. Other sweets to avoid include Christmas pudding, grapes and macadamia nuts. New seasonal additions to the home including Christmas trees, decorations and power leads can pose as potential hazards, as they can be very tempting for pets to chew. If your pet is prone to chewing things, pet owners should try to keep these items out of reach and keep an eye out for destroyed items. While many people love to fill their homes with beautiful summer flowers, cat owners should be wary that certain types including lilies, tulips and daffodils, which are poisonous to cats and can result in kidney failure if consumed.

Bendigo Bank to open in Pomona

Rick Cooper (left) is joined by Pam Hoens and Geoff Edwards from Bendigo Bank and the rest of the community committee after the announcement IT’S official folks! In news that will delight Pomona and Noosa Hinterland residents, Bendigo Bank will be opening an Agency Branch in Station Street, Pomona in early 2015. The formal announcement was made at the AGM of Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Ltd (SCCFSL) last week. The company owns and operates the Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank and company

chairman Rick Cooper said the Pomona community spoke clearly about wanting to have a real say in its own future. “By sponsoring the Pomona King of the Mountain Festival for a number of years we’ve been aware of Pomona’s desire to have Bendigo Bank in town. It’s always been a great idea, but now the timing is right,” Rick said. “The initial community meeting happened in June and since then we’ve seen a steady progression over the past

few months to where we are now. It’s very exciting for everyone, not just for what this means for Pomona, but also because of the track record Bendigo Bank has developed throughout Noosa. The Cooroy Community Bank branch has returned more than $500,000 to its hinterland community since 2008 and continues to be involved in the sponsorship of many community events, schools and clubs. ”More than 300 Community Bank

branches across the country have now returned more than $125 million and changed the Australian banking landscape for the better. The bank has a great history of improving the banking experience because we focus on people, and we look forward to bringing that to Pomona,” Rick added. Anticipated to open in late January or early February, the agency will be located at 3 Station Street, beside Lozza’s Rock’n Roll cafe. It will have its own ATM and will start opening three days a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, open 10.00am - 3.00pm to start with. The agency will have full banking and lending services, able to process home loans, personal loans, business lending and credit cards. There will also be opportunity to book in financial planning and business banking appointments. Mr. Cooper said that while the news is exciting, the success of the agency will depend on the Pomona community getting behind the venture.

“Our message is simple - the more support the Pomona agency receives, the more support we can give back to the community. Every savings or investment account, every home or personal loan, every insurance policy, and every product or service we offer, money goes back into the community. As one of the new agency’s customers, you not only make a decision that benefits you, you make one that benefits the whole community,” Rick concluded. Agencies represent about 20 percent of Bendigo Bank’s retail outlets and the new Pomona agency will be fully supported by the Cooroy Community Bank branch. Manager Geoff Edwards and his Customer Relationship Officer, Pam Hoens will oversee proceedings at both Cooroy branch and the new Pomona agency. If you have any questions regarding the new agency, call Geoff and his team on 5447 7131 for further information.

Govt to sell emerging cultural asset in Mary Valley THE Mimburi Upper Mary Aboriginal Association is a community based organisation based at Belli Park, Queensland, along the banks of the Mary River and Belli Creek. Mimburi is located in the Mary Valley. This 400-acre piece of land was recognised as being environmentally and culturally significant by the Queensland Government during the controversy over the Traveston Dam. The Government strongly encouraged the Mimburi Upper Mary Aboriginal Association to take up a lease

over the property. After promises of support with business planning, resources and finances, the Association agreed to take up the lease. However, Bianca Bond, spokesperson for the Association, said that little help was provided and earlier this year, Queensland Government officers informed members of the Association with startling news. Ms Bond added that while much has been done with the land, the Association was told that the land would be sold. This news came after only a little over 2

years of holding the lease, and with almost none of the promised support. The Mimburi Upper Mary Aboriginal Association is a community based organisation based at Belli Park, Queensland, along the banks of the Mary River and Belli Creek. Ms Bond said that they are not in a position to purchase the land. This means that all the hard work they have put into the cultural, environmental, social and health development for their community will have been for naught. Mimburi is an Aboriginal learning and healing place; a place whose flow reflects the confluence of the rivers, traditional Indigenous crafts and agricultural practices, and cross-cultural exchange. A support group has been formed to work with the Mimburi Upper Mary Aboriginal Association to work towards saving this valuable

land. A petition was launched to support Mimburi and over 800 people signed this petition in the first 2 days: www.communityrun.org/ p/savemimburi Ms Bond said that Mimburi could be one of the jewels in the Mary Valley crown. Instead, the Queensland Government is going to sell it to the highest bidder. She added that the Mary Valley Economic Development Strategy makes only little mention of tourism, and is completely silent on cultural issues.

Keeping in Touch...

THE rain clouds cleared just in time for our Touch Grand Final Day to be played under a shining sun. Spectators and players alike enjoyed an afternoon of sizzling touch action, fairy floss, popcorn, snow cones and a jumping castle just to make sure everyone was entertained. A special presentation was made in the form of a $2,500.00 cheque donation made to our juniors from the Eumundi Sporting & Youth Club who provides financial

assistance to various junior sports in our local area. Noosa Touch would like to thank them for their continued support, so if you can get along to Joe’s Waterhole at Eumundi on a Friday night and grab some raffle tickets. In our U 10 division Screaming Iguanas proved too strong for GSLC (boys), Mexican Amigos managed to hold out Blazers and Purple Panthers finished in front of Pink Storm and GSLC (girls)

in their three way tussle. The Team Players of the Season were Parker Dean, Maddie Dwyer and Ben Anderson. U 12 results saw a drop off (our version of extra time) required to find a winner between Saints and Vipers with Saints being the eventual victors. An exciting finish for everyone involved! Devils and That Cool Team played well with Devils taking the win, Banana Split came out on top in a very close

encounter with GSLC (girls) and Purple Storm went down fighting to Scorpions. Abbi McDonald, Georgia Haack and Tamatoa Casimro were awarded Team Players of the Season. Finishing off the afternoon there were a number of extremely close games in the U 14/ 16 division. Two of our games, STSS (Pansies) v Average Joe’s and GSLC (boys) v Sunshine Rebels were both dead locked at the final siren forcing the dreaded drop off into force. Average Joe’s and Sunshine Rebels came away as title-holders. In another tight finish only one touchdown separated Inferno and NDSHS 8’s (boys) with NDSHS in front when the final whistle blew. NDSHS 9’s won against SBSHS, NDSHS 8’s (green) defeated GSLC and NDSHS 8’S (blue) went down to STCC. Team Players of the Season in this division were Tyla Te Moana, Giverny Robinson and Rueben Gemmell. Tom Kennedy was

awarded Referee of the Season with Noah Kelly receiving the Referee Encouragement Award. Lewis Hallyburton was successful in obtaining his Level 2 badge whilst officiating in the Senior Finals. Well done to these up and coming referees. Congratulations to all of our players for a terrific season and for the great sportsmanship shown across all age groups. Thank you to all of our coaches, managers and parents for your continued support. A very special mention must go to Barry (Baz) O’Neil for his unfaltering involvement in our junior competition. From coaching, refereeing and fundraising, nothing is too much trouble for Baz. Last but definitely not least nothing but praise for our referees who are there each and every week so these games can be played. Please look out for our sign on dates early in the New Year. Until the next touchdown...

WELL that brings an end to another year for the Impact crew. We again had some brilliant achievements this year with numerous fighters all winning Australian, titles, Qld State titles, South East Qld titles, National Golden Glove titles and Qld novice titles. “I am extremely proud of all of our fighters for the way they continue to conduct themselves inside and outside of the ring,” said coach Mark Evans. “You have all learnt the importance of being humble in victory and in defeat and you have all shown great sportsmanship and I believe that these attributes are the most important of all in the sporting arena.

Your Solution

“Congratulations to everyone who received an award at our end of year Xmas party and Presentation day. Well deserved to all recipients. I would like to make a special mention to my wife, Mel Evans for her continued support, for without that support i could not do what we do. “A big thank you also goes out to all the parents that continue to support their kids and our club as these kids chase their dreams. I would also like to thank the Cooroy community for their on going support with these kids and our club. Your support means the world to us. Boxing is not a hobby, it’s a lifestyle! You don’t play boxing! I look forward to another great year training with you all next year and hopefully we will see some new faces as well. “We have a big start to 2015 with three of our Impact Boxing champions competing for the honour to represent Australia over seas.

sent Australia at the World mens junior championships in September to be held in Russia. “All three boxers have an extremely good chance of representing their country next year. They are all ranked number one in their respective weight divisions and Boxing Australia has been keeping a close eye on them for most of this year. We will travel to Melbourne for a week long Hi-performance camp in January as part of our selection process. This camp will feature some of the top kids from each state of Australia that Boxing Australia believes could go on to represent their country. Exciting times ahead for our club & Cooroy. Hopefully Cooroy will be the home to three World Champions in 2015,” coach Mark Evans said. “Stay active over the Xmas break. Get outside & ride a bike, jog, swim, surf & enjoy your holidays. Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year.” Mark & Mel

Clinton sets Pan Pacific record

Clinton Stanley pictured with mum, Sue, who was recently nominated for Volunteer of the Year and one of eight finalists

MORE than 14,500 people from Australia and the world converged on the Gold Coast to be part of the ninth edition of the world’s largest biennial masters games. Cooroy’s “Super Fish” Clinton Stanley competed at the Pan Pacific Masters Games with his 22 team mates from Noosa Masters Swim Club. He competed against main stream swimmers in his age category of 35 to 39 years. The games gave Clinton the opportunity to swim at the world class venue following the redevelopment of the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre for the Commonwealth Games in 2018. There were 445 swimmers from 11 counties competing from the age of 18 to 96. Noosa’s very own Joyce Faunce who happens to be 93 competed in the 50m Freestyle and of course was victorious winning a Gold Medal.

Clinton’s first event was the most difficult event in the pool. Not many people venture into swimming the 400m Butterfly. It is a gruelling swim and Clinton swam a 20 second PB to win the race with perfect execution of the stroke. Clinton’s time set a new 400m Butterfly Pan Pacific Record in the age group 35 to 39 years, a remarkable achievement considering Clinton was born with Down syndrome. It was also a very special time for Clinton having his 91 year old Nanna there to cheer him on with his proud team mates. It was a wonderful 3 day competition for Clinton achieving 2 Gold and 1 Silver individual medals. It just goes to show what you can achieve when you are dedicated to the sport you love and enjoy having fun with your teammates.
