Meeting to decide future for our hall? A PUBLIC community meeting was held in the Cooroy Memorial Hall on the 9th of November 2015 to inform the community of the current state of the hall, and seek community input. 29 members of the community attended this public meeting along with 5 Noosa Shire councilors. It was the intention of the Board to firstly give a brief history of the hall and how the Trusteeship came to the hands of the Cooroy RSL & Citizens Club back in 1979, to explain the Deed of Grant of Land and the ownership of the hall building belong to the community. Phil Hutchinson chaired the meeting and gave a detailed explanation of the Hall stakeholders and their roles regarding the Hall. An overview of the visible and underlying structural issues such as functionality of the kitchen and toilets facilities, plumbing, termite damage and electrical report issues was provided. A financial report was tabled that was relevant to the Cooroy RSL as Trustees along with the RSL’s input of labour and funds. It was explained to the community that the Cooroy RSL does not have sufficient available funds, is not in a position to raise adequate funds and does not achieve sufficient income from the Hall to make continued upkeep or required refurbishment feasible. It was also made very clear to the community that Bendigo Banks potential past funding was no longer available at this stage and it was re-enforced to the public that the Hall is ‘community owned’ but by no specific entity and that it is located on a combination of titles and that the Cooroy RSL merely act as trustees. It was hoped that by informing the community of these current issues, members of the community would understand the needs of the hall and come

together with possible solutions, such as a steering committee. It was expressed by the community that it if no incorporated local entity is prepared to take responsibility for the hall and the present trustees relinquish the trusteeship of the hall, an option would be to pass the ownership of the Hall to state government or local council. The local councilors present at the meeting suggested this as an option and requested that Board of Trustees on behalf of the community, write to Council before relinquishing trusteeship of the Hall. It was noted that at a meeting held with Peter Wellington MP on the 21st of October 2015 that he confirmed by letter his original advice. Mr Wellington suggested that the best way forward would be for the RSL as trustee of the Cooroy Memorial Hall, to transfer its trusteeship of the hall to new trustees, who have no connection with the RSL, and while the trustees may change, there is no intention to change the trust document. He had been informed that this is not a difficult process to have trustees of a trust replaced.

It was decided that another community hall meeting be held 4 weeks’ time and if no steering committee or other Incorporated entity come forward, we the Board of Trustees will have no other choice but to relinquish their trusteeship as outlined in the paragraph above. In the interim, on the 10th November 2015, the Board of Trustees held a special meeting to deter-

mine that the Hall should be temporarily closed to protect the safety of the community. When the hall is deemed safe, it will be reopened. Note that this does not mean the Hall will be compliant, but will no longer disallow some community usage. Next meeting will be held on Wed 9th December at the RSL at 6pm There will

be an update from a community group that may be able to assist in the future of the hall. Although electrical works have been done there is the need for another safety audit which is why the hall remains closed at present. Cr Sandy Bolton has been researching funding opportunities, and will update everyone on the night with those.

Council updates Noosa’s planning scheme NOOSA Council has made changes to the planning scheme to ensure it’s up to date. Noosa Mayor Noel Playford said the amendments would update elements of the nine-year-old planning scheme until Council starts work on a new scheme in 2016. The amendments deal mainly with bushfire and flood hazard mapping, rear setback distances for new homes, and cuts to red tape to support business in the hinterland. Council updated the flood mapping to include the latest modelling, historical information and new flood mitigation work in Tewantin and Pomona, which alleviates major flood threats for some previously flood-prone properties. Cr Playford said information from the community had helped shape the amendments, particularly with flood mapping, where photographs and historical informa-

tion provided were assessed by Council’s consultant. Setting up some hinterland business enterprises, such as small boutique farms, wellness centres, classes, and bed and breakfast accommodation, will be easier as a result of the changes. “For example, the amendments will mean a property owner in a rural zone could use up to three of their bedrooms to create a bed and breakfast operation without need for a development approval,” Cr Playford said. The Sustainable Planning Act requires councils to review their planning schemes at least every 10 years. These amendments will prolong the life of the Noosa Plan until work begins on the new scheme. The Noosa Plan, which commenced in February 2006, has been amended several times. The new amendments will now go to the state government for review.

AFTER three years of deliberations, proposal revisions, and conflicting scientific reports, Noosa councillors meeting as the General Committee this morning voted to reject the Cooroy broiler farm application. The motion, ratified at the 19 November Ordinary Meeting, was carried six votes to one. Proposing the motion, Cr Wellington said planners had this time chosen to ignore some of their previous recommendations including visual amenity, roads and aspects of the dust and odour pollution. He also questioned whether some of the effects on health had been taken into account. Mayor Playford noted that approval

Star for a caring heart ONE of the Cooroy Ri-con Christmas Tree stars will shine extra bright this year for a man who had a caring heart and a deep love for his family and community, Ron Scott. A retired pharmacist, Ron passed away in October this year and his wife Irene said, “A star on the tree is a fitting tribute for Ron as he was my shining star and I deeply miss him.” Ron re-established the pharmacy in Eumundi after a previous closure and was involved in the building of the shopping complex where the pharmacy is still located today under new ownership. He was a hardworking, dedicated man who was passionate about his profession and the health of his community and customers and always loved helping people. network was inadequate for the heavy vehicle traffic proposed. They claimed that as well as having such a minor economic benefit to the community, and a negative impact on the town of Cooroy, the proposal had the potential to pollute local waterways. There have been mixed feelings from the community with residents in the area who would be directly impacted obviously pleased with the decision whilst others believe our farmers should be supported in their efforts to diversify and this is a missed opportunity that would have created more local jobs. The applicants have the option of appealing the decision.

Celebate Christmas in Cooroy WHEN it comes to Christmas Celebrations, Cooroy has the competition beat with their annual Christmas in Cooroy event. Attracting over 10,000 people, this event has the biggest program of FREE activities on offer and you can be assured you’ll see things you won’t see anywhere else! If you could only go to one event this festive season, this is the one you won’t want to miss so put Saturday 5th December in your diary now. One of the highlights of the afternoon is the Bendigo Bank Street Parade and the theme this year is “Fairy Tales & Legends” with floats decorated in all sorts of imaginative ways making their way up Maple Street with lots of giveaways and lollies handed out into the crowds. Over 30 community groups and businesses are all eagerly preparing their floats and costumes for this wonderful display of community spirit. Cr Wilkie was not satisfied that the conditions placed by the planners could be enforced, while Cr Bolton was concerned about the haulage route and the enforcement of chicken pick-up times, and Cr Pardon indicated his opposition to intensive agriculture in rural residential areas. Only Cr Abbot voted to accept the planners’ report. Taxation – one of life’s two certainties The political situation is as usual, discomforting, This time, taxation is causing the trouble, The Government has announced it’s going ahead, With taxation reform, in spite of the expected rough and tumble.

When the PM comes back to reality, He’s got a big job ahead, really grim, He has to reform the Taxation System, in totality, Or the system will be reforming him! We don’t want the country to run out of money, We don’t need another big depression, If Malcolm doesn’t get us some revenue, We could find ourselves in a recession.

Recession is when you have to tighten your belt, Depression is when there is no belt to be tightened, The last stage is when you haven’t any trousers left to tighten, That’s when you’re feeling a bit politically frightened.

Where’s the rolled up Rag?

Most of the trouble occurs when they try to explain things, Quite a few of the members cannot do that, I think they get mixed up with people on boats, refugees, Or they are just simply no good at the chit-chat. Before they begin talking, they don’t know what they’ll say, When they’re talking they tend to become slightly bemused, And when they finish, they don’t know what they said, Is it any wonder, they get everyone confused!!! My suggested slogan being: Look Ahead to the greatest Olympics ever. Ted Davis, Tugun THE Rotary Club of Cooroy would like to thank everyone who supported the Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival held on 18 October this year. We have received some wonderful feedback from many people who enjoyed the day and the spectacular views from the top of Mount Cooroy. This was a fund raising event and at the Cooroy Sports Hub on Saturday 07 November. I was delighted to be able to present a cheque for $8,000 on behalf of the community to Leanne Walsh of Sunshine Butterflies for their ‘Our Backyard’ project. This worthy local charity that helps disabled people to have a better life. The Festival would not have happened without the very substantial backing of Cooroy Mountain Spring Water and McDermott Aviation and the generosity of our sponsors, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, Cooroy Rag, John Madill Motors, Cooroy Family Practice, Noosa Lifestyle, ATV Mowers Cooroy and the donation of raffle prizes by Mitre 10 and many Cooroy businesses. NOOSA’S Disaster Coordination Centre Chair Bob Abbot is urging residents to develop bushfire, storm and flood survival plans for their households ahead of summer. It comes as Noosa’s Local Disaster Management Group took part in Operation Firestorm, a scenariobased emergency response exercise involving Noosa, Gympie and Sunshine Coast local disaster management groups and emergency services. This year’s scenario involved major bushfires burning simultaneously across the three local government areas, including three fires within Noosa Shire. “These annual exercises test our readiness for disaster and our disaster plan, as well as ensure coordination across all emergency services and agencies in responding to a disaster event,” Cr Abbot said. “However, being well-prepared to weather a disaster is everyone’s responsibility, and it starts at home. “With summer approaching it’s important that we are all prepared for potential fire events, and it’s timely for residents to talk to their families about developing not only a plan for fire events, but storms and floods, which occur all too often in Queensland,” Cr Abbot said. A bushfire survival plan details how residents will prepare and what action they will take if threatened by a bushfire. For information about developing a bushfire survival plan, visit the Rural Fire Service Queensland website at www. ruralfire.qld.gov.au<http:// www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au> Cr Abbot said Operation Firestorm helped councils and state agencies fine tune their disaster response. “There are always learnings, and communications are the key. These sorts of exercises help build trust and foster strong working relationships between all of the agencies involved,” he said.

CHRISTMAS means different things to different people in our community depending on your beliefs, but one beautiful part of Christmas is spending time with family and friends and giving gifts to others. Our beaches are usually packed with families enjoying the day swimming and playing games on the beach or in a local park. Our homes are generally bursting at the seams with food, family and friends. But Christmas can also be a stressful time for families. Especially given the current economic climate, a rise in mortgage interest rate or loss of employment can all mean that families may be unable to find those extra dollars to participate in the celebration of Christmas. One way to perhaps plan ahead for Christmas and the extra financial requirements it brings is to open up a Christmas Club account with your local bank. A Christmas

Club account is typically an interest bearing passbook account with no or low fees, that you are able to deposit into during the year but can’t withdraw from until a set period. This set withdrawal period is usually November 1 to January 31, so you catch those post Christmas sales. You can arrange a transfer from your savings account or even from your pay office into the Christmas Club account and that way it is like a forced savings. Set down a budget of how much you think you can put aside each pay day, it does not have to be large, but it does have to be a

realistic amount, because if you need to withdraw the funds usually a penalty fee will be applied to the account. Why not ask you bank for a Christmas Club account and start early for next year’s celebrations? Now I’m off to access my Christmas Club account to do my present shopping. If you have any questions about opening a Christmas Club account or would like to discuss any other banking matter, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at Geoff .edwards@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

30 years and still in Kindy

Diana Markovits with some of her 2015 kindy kids A BIG congratulations to Diana Markovits who celebrated her 30 year milestone as Kindergarten Director at Cooroy Community Kindergarten this year. The Cooroy Community Kindergarten has the highest rating in the State and I’m sure this is in no small part due to Diana’s commitment. After such a long career in the one place you would have to wonder if teaching thousands of four year olds had lost some of its shine for her but Diana’s passion for the job, or what she considers ‘a calling’, is obvious. Her enthusiasm is genuine and as she says, “If I wasn’t extremely happy doing what I do, I wouldn’t still be doing it”. “Every year … in fact, every day and every child, presents its own challenges, interests and rewards,” says Diana, who has seen many

changes at the kindy during her 30 years including three major curriculum changes, revamping and extensions to the building and the increasing involvement of fathers in the kindergarten community. “Once upon a time if a male walked through the gates everyone would stare like some alien had entered our space, but now it’s common place for fathers to be the volunteer parent, which is great,” she says. But she says, while some things change, some stay the same. “The children’s interest in dinosaurs, fairies and pirates is a constant. As are the cubby houses which go up and down below the big mango tree every year. Favourite colours remain pink and purple, and there’s not much I don’t know about four year olds and what they

can create in a sandpit,” she laughs. “It’s a privilege and a joy to be here and I couldn’t do it without the support I get from parents and the community,” says Diana. “I’ve met some wonderful people, had amazing assistants and committees. I’ve had children I’ve taught bring their own children here and worked on the committee which is quite surreal,” she says. When asked if there’s anything she’d change she laments the small amount of time the department allocates to complete non-contact responsibilities which means that 10 hour work days are common. “I’d say that is unsustainable, but here I am,” she laughs. Here’s hoping you’ll be here to nurture our next generation Diana.

Can you help Peter get life saving brain surgery? PETER Glover is a father of 2, a loving husband of Donna Glover and a new Poppy with his beautiful Grandaughter Madison who is just 15 months old and my daughter. Peter is used to living a very active life, working full time, is a fishing fanatic and spending one on one quality time with his beautiful daughter Alisha. Only a month ago Peter felt tingling and some strange sensations in his face and finger tips down one side. So he went to the doctor. After many tests and an MRI they discovered an unusual and suspect shadow on the scans. After a risky biopsy Peter was told he had terminal cancer in his brain stem. Next stage was to start radiation and chemotherapy straight away. The devastated family were trying to come up with other options for Peter and were told about the famous brain surgeon, Dr Teo. He operates and saves lives when other brain surgeons can’t or won’t. After managing to get an appointment, Dr Teo has offered to operate on Peter to give him a longer life span, saying if all is successful he may get 95 percent of the brain tumour from Peter’s brain stem. However, the surgery is going to cost the family $85,000. They have found $60,000 and are trying to raise the funds to find the rest to give Peter a longer life, more time with his precious family and beautiful grandaughter Madison. If you can help, there is a ‘go fund me’ web page set up for donations. Please go to https://www.gofundme.com/nubwrrtc

Cooroy wins in Christmas Spirit stakes IT’S beginning to look a lot like Christmas, thanks to a wonderful group of Christmas elves who have been hard at work for months to put together the magical community celebration that is Christmas in Cooroy. In terms of Christmas spirit nobody does it quite like Cooroy does! The decorations are up around town and look fantastic with a record number of elves volunteering to tinsel up town this year. The official turning on of the lights celebration kicks off on Friday 4 December at 6pm with free nibbles at the opening of the Guardian Photo Competition & Exhibition in the Butter Factory Arts Centre with a beautiful array of local photos on display. Cooroy debaters win local state school THE ‘affirmative’ took on those in the ‘negative’ in the fourth annual Noosa District Debating Cup held at Noosaville State School held on Monday. Students representing Cooroy, Tewantin and Noosaville State Schools from eight teams participated in a competition where round robin debates occurred on various subjects, such as “homework is worthwhile”, “animal testing should be banned” and the final debate “reward is better than punishment.” The skills and the passion were on display for all to see, and for the record, Cooroy’s junior and senior teams were crowned champions for 2015. Since 2012, the tournament has proved to be a real hit with students from Grades 4, 5 and 6 finding a fun way to inspire debating with a little competitiveness between the schools. Tournament co-ordinator, Barb Allen said the Noosa District Debating Cup was a great success and is now a sought after title between the schools and sees the tournament growing from strength to strength. “The kids have really embraced the annual Debaters Cup and we thank the Cooroy and Tewantin

Cooroy State School's victorious Junior and Senior teams at the Noosa District Debating Cup Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank for their financial support of this event. It was with their help we were once again able to purchase medallions for each place getter and trophies for the junior and senior winners of the competition and provide each student who took part with a certificate of participation. “They even provided the funds for the kids to have a lovely celebratory after-

noon tea. I think all of us have been blown away by the standard of competition again in 2015 and most importantly, had a lot of fun,” Ms. Allen said. “The students have worked really hard under the guidance of their coaches and debating is a great skill for the kids to have as they get older. We certainly have a few budding experts on our hands, but at the end of the day

the tournament’s success is in the enjoyment the students had in taking part,” she added. Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards said the bank is delighted about its continued involvement in sponsoring tournaments that develop students’ learning and sportsmanship. ‘‘We’re really proud to sponsor this competition and I was so impressed with the poise and delivery

of so many young debaters in the finals. I must say though, it was great to see the kids from Cooroy doing so well and taking out both titles,” Geoff said. “This is just an extension of the great relationship between our Community Banks and all the schools represented and we look forward to offering our support for the Noosa District Debating Cup in 2016,” he added.

CHRISTMAS is a happy time of year full of holiday festivities. And if you plan ahead, you can avoid a New Year budget hangover when the bills arrive. Here are seven tips to help you scale back on the festive season expenses. 1. Plan well ahead: This may seem obvious but once you have a plan and a budget, you have to stick to it to make it work. Divide your spending into the major categories of gifts, catering, entertainment and travel–list the necessary items in each. Work out how much you will have to spend overall then you can put a spending cap on each category. 2. Save: Set up a special Christmas bank account and put money into it each week or use a regular auto payment option from your pay so you are not tempted to spend it. Start saving as early as possible. It could be worthwhile starting a savings plan as an option to help you reach your savings goals sooner. 3. Decide who is naughty and nice: First draw up a gift list so you can edit it if you need to, then work out the cost per item. Consider giving thoughtful gifts such as a voucher for a home-cooked meal, lawn, garden or home handyman work to save money. Talk to friends and family about having a spending cap per gift. A ‘Secret Santa’ is perfect for work teams or bigger families as you buy only one bigger gift for someone in the group

rather than buying for everyone. 4. Shop smart: Have a shopping list, as it’s easy to spend too much if you don’t have clear goals. When you find something you like, be smart, compare prices and be prepared to bargain or at least ask if the shop will match cheaper prices elsewhere. Pick up bargains in the sales during the year and put them aside. Reasonable alternatives for cheaper shopping are outlet stores if you can get to them. Avoid last-minute shopping as it can result in rushed and expensive decisions. Above all, make sure your head rules your heart and you stick to buying what you can afford. 5. Plan your meals: Christmas can be a time of overindulgence. Plan ahead so you don’t waste food or money. Work out what events you will be catering and estimate a budget for each. Can you ask others to contribute by bringing a dish or drinks? Yuletide treats such as Christmas cakes and puddings can actually improve with age, so you can make them ahead of time. If you’re stuck for ideas, try some online meal planners. For alcohol, compare bottle prices using the website boozle. 6. Easy money savers: Look for savings around the home. Re-use decorations from previous years or consider making your own

rather than buying them. School holiday prices can be expensive so this is a good time to use any discounted tickets or special deals to popular attractions such as theme parks, movies and zoos. And don’t forget a packed lunch will save you money too. Try breaking up the school holiday boredom with free activities such as a treasure hunt around the house, a crafts day or a family cooking session. 7. Get away and travel smarter: The holiday season is one of the most expensive times to travel as higher demand for transport and accommodation push prices up, so it may be worth considering house swapping or a staycation. There are plenty of ways to take a break without breaking the bank. But most of all, it’s important to remember the reason for the season and that above all, it’s a special time of year to enjoy with your nearest and dearest. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 are authorised representative and credit representative of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. Vietnam Vet presented with Quilt of Valour FORMER soldier and Vietnam veteran, John Waddell, was surprised recently by the presentation of a Quilt by the government recognised group, Quilts of Valour Australia. The group was formed after a Victorian lady became aware of The Quilts of Valor Foundation, begun by an American woman in 2003. Quilts of Valour Australia Inc was formed in 2012 and so far have presented some 500 quilts to returned veterans. The magnanimous thought behind Q.O.V.A. is, as its American counterpart, “to wrap the wounded in love, care and healing” Mr Waddell, though not physically wounded in Vietnam, still bears the emotional scars of that fateful time in Australia’s history.

Pop Up Art at the Butter Factory

GREAT RANGE of FABRICS - RIBBONS & PROJECTS at

POP Up Art is delighted to have as guest artists for our final month the two brilliant artists who decorated the J for us earlier this year. Well known and popular artist, Pam Walpole and the equally innovative Yanni Van Zijl are bringing to us displays of their very clever chandeliers and fascinator hats, laboriously cut from recycled plastic bottles. All part of a statement about plastic in our environment. Yanni says “The fascinators are a fun use of this material and I am amazed at the way I can manipulate it to pass for attractive head wear.

Yanni is a free lance photographer who is currently exploring environmental and ephemeral installation work as well as ceramics. She enjoys working in a collaborative way with Pam and Jan Dunlop where ideas are pooled and large scale works are created. Pam is recognised as a contemporary landscape artist whose popular works are constantly in demand. She is lesser known as an accomplished sculptor and she and Yanni have frequently graced our suburbia with temporary sculptures which are often statements about the environment. The rolling exhibitions will also display the

Yannis chandelier works of 60 other artists and will open on Friday, 4th December at 6pm in conjunction with the Christmas in Cooroy event at the Butter Factory, Maple St Cooroy. (Next to the Cooroy Library).

COOROY RAG police beat

Planting the future for Noosa Botanic Gardens

with Sergeant Mal Scott

CCTV Camera systems have become an extremely valuable tool by which police are able to detect criminals and solve crime thus stopping further offences from occurring. I can think of many times where minor and major incidents have been solved by a simple image captured on a CCTV camera system. One that comes to mind in the recent past is the case of 29 year old Melbourne woman Jill Meagher when she was attacked, raped and murdered on the streets of Melbourne in 2012. Initially her case was treated as a missing person inquiry however upon investigation a full blown murder investigation was launched by Victorian police. All available CCTV footage in the area where she went missing was obtained and painstakingly examined and a breakthrough in the case came when Jill was seen walking past a shop window front with a male following close behind. History will tell that 6 days later, Jill’s body was found dumped on the side of a

road 50 km’s away. Police initially had no leads however the vital footage captured on a small $500 CCTV camera installed by a shop owner was the vital piece of evidence that allowed police to quickly identify the offender and prevent further offences from occurring. In my time as Officer in Charge of the Cooroy Police station I have utilised CCTV footage from a number of the larger businesses of Cooroy to solve such crimes as Armed Robbery, Assault Occasioning Grievous Bodily Harm, Burglary and break and enter offences. In the past CCTV systems where seen as expensive with only the larger businesses being able to afford them however as with most technology the costs have now dramatically decreased to the point where good quality standalone systems can be purchased and installed at minimal cost to es to better protect them from being victims of crime. In another proactive approach at keeping Cooroy safe, The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce has initiated discus-

sions with a CCTV Specialist who has provided advice and costings on what can be provided to small business owners and at what cost. The Chamber are also involved in discussions in regards applying to have a system installed at several points around town to monitor public space however at this stage Government grants etc are not available so these discussions have been placed on hold pending further advice. Believe it or not, Cooroy has just under 200 businesses and shops within a compact Central Business District and Industrial Area. If we could get 5 to 10 percent of these shops to install their own CCTV Systems, which in many cases would be tax deductable, Cooroy would go a long way to better protecting itself from crime and going one step further once criminals became aware of this, deter those criminals from committing offences in Cooroy and simply go someplace else. The Chamber of Commerce with the help of the Cooroy Police Volunteer in

policing, Anne Winnings are asking for expressions of interest from member of the business community who would like further information in regards costings and types of systems available. It is envisioned that if we received enough expressions of interest an information night will be organised. Of course this would all be obligation free and completely reliant upon the individual business needs. We are seeking expressions of interest in this Cooroy CCTV initiative. Please contact the local Volunteer in Police, Anne Winning on Winning.Anne@police. qld.gov.au to register your interest. Expressions of interest can be forwarded to Anne up until 18 December 2015. Please think carefully about this initiative as I am often asked by members of the community on how best to protect themselves from crime and how to best help police solve crime and I am in no doubt that this initiative will go a long way in further reducing crime in Cooroy.

IT’S that time of the year when organizations are having their AGMs and electing their new office bearers for 2016. One local Noosa group has certainly found an appropriate match between their activities and the name of their new President. Horticulturalist and regional ABC radio gardening presenter, Paul Plant, has been elected as the 2016 President of the Friends of the Noosa Botanic Gardens. Paul is also the Editor and owner of the gardening magazine, Sub Tropical Gardening, on the Steering Committee for the recently established Friends of Brisbane Botanic Gardens and an active member of the Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens.

“I plan to proceed into 2016 with all the gusto and energy created over the past year by the Friends Committee, Garden Maintenance and Guides teams and all the volunteers” said Paul on accepting the nomination. “My aim is to complete current projects; repeat flagship events such as the Father’s Day Plant Fair and develop new projects in conjunction with Noosa Council and its Noosa Botanic Gardens team.” Paul made particular reference to implementing a ‘Living Collection Policy’; a plant database and planning tool existing in other Botanic Gardens in Australia. “This document will provide guidelines on what and how to incorporate new plantings and how to protect and enhance

Paul Plant identified ‘significant’ collection species”. “2016 shall be a year of both consolidation and growth – particularly in encouraging new members with fresh ideas to assist both in the gardens maintenance and as guides as well as for our varied musical and other events.” For further information: email FNBGsecretary@gmail.com

ON Tuesday, November 24, the Junior Secondary Campus at Pomona was contacted by emergency services advising they had received a bomb threat to the campus from an unknown person. In accordance with our school emergency and evacuation procedures all students and staff were safely evacuated at second break. The school liaised with Emergency Services Personnel and after being advised that the risk of the threat was deemed to be low, a coordinated search of the campus was conducted by the QPS and QFRS. The emergency services team deemed the area to be safe just as students were departing for the day.

DID you know that the power plant for the Cooroy Butter Factory was run by steam, the operator being Harry Walter. Fuel for the boiler was timber, and for an unknown reason was called foot wood. It was obtained from outlying areas and split into post like slabs and stored in stacks ready for use. Water for the boiler was obtained from a well across the street (Mary River Road) from where the library now stands. From the factory a pipeline existed underground along Mary River Road to Carpenters Road, where there was a piggery. Through this pipe flowed buttermilk from butter production for pig consumption. At 1PM a steam powered horn signified the buttermilk was on its way. I am told the pigs got to know this and stirred ready for its arrival. I have checked to see if the well cover is still there but I think the clothing bins may be over it. Alex Lowe, Cooroy

LOCAL author and illustrator Gregg Dreise’ children’s picture book Silly Birds, has now received awards nationally and internationally. The last illustration in Silly Birds was shortlisted to represent Australia at the Bologna International Book Fair. It is a huge honour. I was very excited to be invited to Bologna Italy. I played the didgeridoo and handed over to Jackie French to open the Australia Party during the biggest book fair of the world. It was a great experience, one I will never forget. The exposure to the international market was a fantastic eye opener. Gregg was also excited to win the Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year 2015. children in Australia are diagnosed with some kind of support required for their speech. To know that speech pathologists promote the value of reading to children as the best way to mimic sounds and improve speech is great. To know that they highly recommend my book to help young children is extremely exciting. Gregg is also the author and illustrator of Kookoo Kookaburra and Mad Magpie. All of these stories are about teaching morals. Silly Birds is based on the saying, “It’s hard to soar like an eagle when you are surrounded by turkeys”. Kookoo Kookaburra is based on the saying, “Kindness is like a boomerang - if you throw it often, it comes back often. If you never take the chance to throw it, it never comes back”. Mad Magpie is based on the words, “Stay calm like the surface of the water, yet strong like its current. And know that there is a song out there for everyone.” Gregg is a gifted storyteller and musician, and he features the didgeridoo and guitar in his performances at schools and festivals. He will be doing a free performance at A Little Shop of Soul in Cooroy on the school holidays on Tuesday the 15th of December at 10am. Come along and have some fun, and don’t miss your opportunity to get a signed copy of one of his books.

THE 2016 Noosa Art Award is open for entries. BETTIE Wormald will also be remembered as Sister Brittain by long term residents. Bettie was born in Busselton WA. She graduated as a registered nurse and midwife then later studied maternal and child welfare. Bettie moved to Brisbane and worked for 12 years doing maternal and child welfare services. In the early 70s she moved to Sunshine Beach

where they built their beach home. That’s when Bettie started working at the Noosa District Community Hospital. Bettie was a gifted knitter and encouraged staff to knit tiny baby clothes for the hospital nursery. In that time she delivered a lot of children. Bettie sold her Sunshine Beach house to Les Girls entertainer Ken “Handy” Johnson. She then moved out to Black Pinch Road, Pomona. Bettie worked at the hospital until it closed in 2000. In 2000 Bettie started volunteering at Cooroy Lifeline, working every Monday (never had a sick day). Bettie was passionate about our fashion parades. She loved to dress up. She had done so many, even planning her holidays round them. Trish and I was were fortunate to go around in October with a beautiful bunch of flours to give to her for her 15 years Golden Wattle award which Lifeline acknowledges. Bettie was well known around the community with her connections to Cooroy Tappers, Noosa VIEW Club, and International Folk dancing, amongst others. Bettie was not only generous with her volunteering to Lifeline, she bequeathed her home contents to Lifeline Sunshine Coast in aid of our suicide prevention counselling service. Her lofe of life, dancing, holidaying and sharing laughter has shown us all how to live. Thanks Bettie. It was Bettie’s wish that a memorial service in her honour was not to be held. CYRIL was born in Murgon Qld on March 30, 1922, the seventh child of 11 born to Carl and Martha Bichel. Cyril passed away on Sunday, November 1, aged 93. After finishing his school years, Cyril helped out on the family farm, until 1938, when he joined his brother Wally working on his dairy farm in the Gympie area. With the second World War breakout, he rejoined the family, which by now were residing at Kauri Street, Cooroy. He then worked with his father in the timber business, mainly cutting cord wood for the boilers at the Cooroy Dairy Factory. After a period of some years, Cyril commenced working as an off-sider to a local carrier by the name of Jim Bell. This was his main job for many years, which he thoroughly enjoyed, because Jim often called in at the local for a few beers after work! After his retirement with Jim, Cyril kept a very quiet life often helping his mother in the garden, cooking and chopping and keeping the wood pile stacked to perfection to use for the stove3 and copper. After the death of his mother in 1982 and his brother Cameron in 1992, Cyril lived with his sister Sylvia and brother-in-law Johnny Kenzler for approximately 15 years. After suffering some ill health, he was admitted to Kabara Nursing Home here in Cooroy until his passing. Cyril was always a very quiet person who loved his creek and river fishing, along with his love of the local Saturday night pictures at The Memorial Hall in Cooroy. I can’t recall him ever missing this picture night. He was a common sight walking around town hoping for a chat

with someone. Before the overpass opened in 1950, Cyril used to open the railway gates after the trains had gone through, spending time watching for them to come. He used to love when family members visited the family home, wanting to make everyone cups of tea, and eager to show you anything new or of interest to him. He thoroughly enjoyed life at Kabara. He was always looking forward to their numerous outings and lunches at the Cooroy RSL Club. Staff at the home have said he was a lovely, kind man and was happily signing Waltzing Matilda with them the day before he passed. He was well looked after at Kabara, and we thank them for their kindness. Ronald BIchel

before and during a disaster. Martin Drydale, Noosa’s Local Disaster Coordinator, said the Get Ready Friday initiative is all about people being aware of the risks around their home and neighbourhood and developing an emergency plan. “We all need to talk with our families and friends about what we will do in a flood or a bushfire, if mum or dad or both can’t get home for one reason or another, and how we prepare for a cyclone or a bush fire.” he said. As well as the movies Get Ready Friday will also feature a four-minute video about how you can get ready for the storm season. It’s been made by kids attending Noosa Flexible Learning Centre.

Your hormones and weight loss: how to find balance SCIENTISTS are discovering there’s a hidden key to shedding pounds, and it’s got a little more to do with calories and willpower. Meet your hormones and the surprising effect they have on weight. Say you eat a doughnut. The doughnut you deserve because it’s a hellish day, and carbs are what will make this week. Oh, the bliss when that powdered sugar hits your system! Until, inevitably, you crash, which leaves you exhausted and depressed... and sniffing around for another doughnut. Because a doughnut is never just a doughnut. It’s a Molotov cocktail that you’re lobbing into your hormonal ecosystem. Hormones are the chief executives of the body, governing everything: our sex lives, our stress lives, our immune response. Research has implicated hormonal imbalance in everything from breast cancer to short-term memory loss — as well as what we eat, why we eat it, and what happens to the body once the food is down our throats. Which means that when you picked up that doughnut, you weren’t just having a weak-willed moment. You were obeying your team of internal managers. The Hormone-Weight Link: A complex concoction of some 200

hormones circulates in the bloodstream at any given time, each can signal different things to different parts of the body. The most influential for weight loss are the thyroid hormone, which helps regulate metabolism, and insulin, which allocates sugar in the bloodstream. (The doughnut prompted insulin to flood your system, directing glucose to your muscles and liver and converting excess sugar into fat. The resulting plunge in glucose led to the sugar crash.) If this sounds like you and you have had difficulty in shedding and keeping off excess weight in the past, the good news is that there is help right here in Cooroy. Make A Difference Health & Fitness are offering the only practitioner delivered weight loss program in the local area that is claimable with your private health fund. Called ‘Shake It’ you will experience comprehensive testing and information gathering to formulate an individual treatment plan for you. Don’t wait until the new year, give us a call today to discover an easy to follow weight loss program which is based around eating normal food! Crowded teeth and developing jaws DID you know, three out of four children have crowded teeth and incorrect developing jaws? These problems can be seen from as early as five years of age. “Modern research has shown that crowded teeth, incorrect jaw development and other orthodontic problems are not caused by big teeth in small jaws or hereditary factors. Mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, reverse swallowing and thumb sucking (known as incorrect myofunctional habits) are the real causes,” says Dr Wei Shen of Wattle Street Dental. “Allergies, asthma and an open mouth posture also contribute to incorrect jaw development. Growing up, most of us have had one or more of these myofunctional problems, which may have been the cause of incorrect dental and facial development.

“Just getting braces, with or without extractions, does not address the underlying causes of crooked teeth. This is why once the braces are removed, the teeth usually crowd up again, unless poor oral habits are corrected. This is why treatment with braces alone commonly results in the need for life-long retainers. This is done through the use of a series of removable dental appliances that are worn for just 1-2 hours each day and overnight while sleeping. “Daily use of myobrace combined with regular activities (to improve breathing, muscle function and tongue posture) results in straight teeth and improved function, leading to optimal facial development and healthier smile.” For more information call Wattle Street Dental on 5447 7669.

Healthy Harold still changing young lives AFTER years of planning, Cooroy State School has just welcomed a new version of an old friend. As many of our local primary school aged students know, Healthy Harold the Giraffe is synonymous with the Life Education program. Well, this year Healthy Harold has a brand new home. The old Life Education van provided our kids with health and drug education in Noosa for many years. Now a brand new van is continuing that good work. Life Education was established 36 years ago and has helped more than 5 million young Australians to make healthy and safe choices. The program teaches children ways to keep

their bodies healthy and to equip them with the skills to make appropriate choices and a way of learning to stay secure in potentially unsafe situations. It remains a not-for-profit organisation, which operates in close partnership with our local schools and communities and relies on student fees and local community funding to meet costs and that’s where Bendigo Bank has helped to subsidize the program. Through its sponsorship, the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, via its parent company Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited (SCCFSL) offsets the program costs that’s professionally

THE Pomona King of the Mountain race is rightly considered a tough event, drawing super-fit endurance athletes from around Australia and abroad. It’s a dangerous course, where injury is just one wrong step away. Finishing is an accomplishment, winning is nothing more than a dream for most. So what do the fittest competitors from the Pomona King of the Mountain race do when they need an extra challenge? They think big. And Mt Edgecombe in Kawerau, New Zealand, more than fits the bill. In late October, an AllStar team from the Pomona event made the trip to New Zealand to compete in its sister race. Together, these races are known as the TransTasman Challenge. The Pomona race is 4km long, including the climb up 438m Mt Cooroora. By contrast, the Mt Edgecombe course is 7.5km long and the climb is 820m. The record finishing time stands at 45 minutes, 54 seconds. So the Australians had a task ahead of them. Lachlan Challis, Ben Duffus , Neil Labinsky, Amos Saraber and Leslie Saunders shaped up against the best mountain racers New Zealand had to offer. Leslie Saunders, the 2015 Women’s Winner of the Pomona King of the Mountain race, offered an insight into her training regime for the much tougher Mt Edgecombe event. “I run up and down Mt Cooroora two or three times each run”, she said. “I focus on strong, continuous climbing and also run 10 – 16km per session to build endurance. Finally, I compete in local trail runs and do lots of strength work.” “It is a highlight in my life

and I love the race and people”, said Leslie. “The climb is amazing, it seems to go on and on, and the downhill is so different to Pomona. Volcanic scree makes for a speedy, sliding, almost skiing descent.” Ben Duffus agrees. “The course is very different to anything else I’ve run on”, he said. “Running down the thick volcanic soil feels a bit like running down a ski field, except there are a few obstacles along the way.” Runners have been known to dodge wild pigs while competing in the Mt Edgecombe race, but this time Ben’s obstacle was a little more solid. “About a quarter of the way back down the mountain I clipped a branch while jumping off a ledge, which left a rather impressive gash on my torso. But other than that things went nice and smoothly.” Ben is a veteran of several international endurance events, including the Skyrunning World Championships held in the French Alps. This is an 86km ultra-marathon, and in the 2015 event he finished 3rd overall. He’s also competed in the World Long Distance Mountain Running Championships, this year held on Pikes Peak in Colorado, USA. Pikes Peak takes the competitors to 4302m – for perspective consider that Mt Kosciuszko is 2228m – and at the end of that race Ben literally needed an oxygen tank to recover. Despite their experience in a range of endurance events, Ben and Leslie both consider the Mt Edgecombe race to be special. “Just like at Pomona, the local community really gets behind the race, which creates an amazing vibe on race day and in the lead up to it”, said Ben. “It really is an amazing race”, Leslie agreed. “The community is so friendly and the Australian runners are treated so well.

Ben Duffus We stay with local families and participate in all the Festival’s pre-dinners and meet and greets. We visit the local school and the kids perform the Haka. We were also very lucky to have with us our team manager and organiser of the Pomona King of the Mountain, Barry Stewart. He held the Aussie flag proudly at race finish for Ben and me, as well as our other team members.” So how did the Australian competitors fare? They did us proud. From the 200 starters, Ben Duffus won the race

outright in a great time of 46:27. His win was only the 3rd time an Australian has won this race in 30 years of competition. Leslie Saunders was the second woman past the line in 1:8:55. She came first in the Veteran Women’s Division, retaining the title she won last year. Neil Labinsky was 8th overall, with a time of 57:40. Lachlan Challis was 5th in the Junior Men’s Division, finishing in 58:24. And Amos Saraber came 3rd in the Veteran Men’s Division, in a time of 1:4:35.

Team manager Barry Stewart noted that finishing the race in under an hour is an excellent achievement that all top runners try for in this race. “They all competed at the highest level and were great ambassadors for our town and race”, he said. The Pomona King of the Mountain race is organized by the Cooroy/Pomona Lions Club, and the next event scheduled for July 2016. With competitors like these five in the mix, it might be best if the rest of us start training right now.

THE best cricketing environment on the Sunshine Coast just became even better. Under the leadership of President John Hope, the Cooroy-Eumundi Cougars Cricket Club has renewed and increased their commitment to developing junior cricketers in the area. Recently the Cooroy Eumundi Cricket Club was awarded a 2 year CommBank Club Sponsorship after being one of 65 clubs selected from over 1800. Thanks to tremendous support from the Commonwealth Bank, the club has been able to purchase an extensive range of much needed cricket gear and training aides. The club has also appointed a Junior Coordinator to develop a strong and structured environment where young cricketers can learn at a pace that suits their development while extracting the most amount of fun possible from Australia’s favourite game. The Cougars are the reigning Sunshine Coast under 12’s premiers and are well placed to perform again this season, while the under 14’s and under 16’s look set to make their mark. The under 10’s play under lights in a festive atmosphere each Friday night. The Cougars welcome all boys and girls aged from 6 years old and up to join in the fun. Trainings take place on Monday and Wednesday 3:30 - 5:30 and the Cooroy sports ground. For further information please contact Junior Co- Dale, Shane and Jake Scanlan have combined for the Cooroy Eumundi Cricket Club to make it a family affair ordinator Darrel Forrest on 0416335106.

Congratulations to Wayne Brogden who was voted in as a Life Member of the Cooroy Golf Club at their recent AGM. It was 25 years ago that his father, Loftus (pictured congratulating Wayne), became a Life Member of the Club. The honour was a just reward for Wayne’s 41 years of commitment and dedication as a member of the Club.

He believes very strongly in the program. Coming through the ranks himself, he knows the program works. He has a great rapport with the youngsters and gets the very best out of them in a fun and nurtur-
