MISTRESS

Cooroy says no to crime COOROY clearly said no to crime recently with the community taking to Cooroy – Heart of Noosa Country Facebook page to express their outrage about the crimes committed in Cooroy at Sunshine Mitre 10 and their support for Cooroy’s police sergeant Mal Scott who was injured during one of the incidents. “The support from the community was overwhelming with hundreds of messages for a quick recovery. We have such a wonderful community and I very much appreciate everyone’s kind words and thoughts,” said Sgt Mal Scott. Police have charged 5 people with more than 45 charges and Sgt Mal Scott is back on light duties this week which is a fantastic outcome all around. Cooroy might be a small town but it is taking a big stand against crime with the installation of a CCTV camera system funded by a $200,000 grant awarded to the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce from the Australian Government’s Safer Streets program. Sergeant Mal Scott is impressed by the system saying, “When the crimes at Mitre 10 were committed we only had a few cameras online but even that small amount of footage was useful in our investigations which ultimately resulted in the apprehension of the criminals. When fully installed there will be over 20 cameras located at strategic points throughout the Cooroy CBD and they will send live feeds back to the police station. This system will definitely be a deterrent to criminals and will also assist greatly in the capture and conviction of criminals in Cooroy,” said Sgt Mal Scott. “This project has been 12 months in the planning between Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and the Cooroy Police. It’s been an extensive process with a lot of work from volunteers but

Sgt Mal Scott, Volunteer in Police Anne Winning, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President Danielle Taylor, Hon Tony Abbott MP & CCTV Specialist Doug Grant at the announcement of the funding last year it is worth it as it will ensure that Cooroy sends the firm message to criminals that Cooroy is not an easy target,” said Danielle Taylor, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President. Initially Volunteer in Police, Anne Winning spoke to all the retailers in town about the project and having CCTV cameras located throughout town. “Anne got overwhelming support for the project from all the businesses so we saw the value in the project straight away. With input from myself, local businesses and the Chamber, we had CCTV specialists recommend the locations for the cameras which formed the basis of Cooroy Chamber of Commerce’s application for the grant,” said Sgt Mal Scott. The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce was successful with their application as announced by ex-prime minister The Hon Tony Abbot MP and Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien MP in a visit to Cooroy in May last year. “In October, we received the final agreement from the Australian Government

which meant we could start work on the project in November. This is a fantastic win for Cooroy with $200,000 of investment into our town. It will enhance the great work that is already undertaken by the Cooroy Police and is aimed at making our streets even safer by deterring and solving crime. Installation is progressing ahead of schedule with over half of the cameras already operational and the entire project should be up and running

by end of February,” said Danielle Taylor. This project is wonderful example of what can be achieved when the community and local business work together with community organisations, businesses, volunteers and the local police all involved in the project. Under the terms of the funding, the CCTV system is owned and maintained by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce with local businesses funding related elec-

tricity costs. The CCTV camera feeds are transmitted straight to the police station. It’s important to note that not one cent of tax payer’s hard earned money has been used to buy and install this system as it is fully funded by the Australian Federal Government through the proceeds of crime act where money confiscated from criminals is used to fund projects that make our streets and communities safer.

New home for iconic Body Art Festival THE iconic Australian Body Art Festival has found a new home in the beautiful Noosa hinterland. The 2017 event will take place at the Lower Mill Site in Cooroy on the weekend of 8 and 9 April 2017, attracting artists and spectators from across Australia and overseas. Cooroy Chamber of Commerce were excited to bring the event to Noosa after it had been successful run in Eumundi since 2009. “It’s such a wonderful festival with some terrific artists and a great community, family vibe which will be a perfect fit with the artistic Cooroy community. We’ve had fantastic feedback about bringing the event to Cooroy and artists registrations have been flowing in steadily. We can’t wait to see all the wonderful living artworks that are created,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Danielle Taylor. The event is centred on competitions in temporary body painting with compe-

titions in the categories of brush and sponge, airbrush, special effects and face painting. The event also showcases competitions and exhibitions in wearable art and photography. Amateur and professional artists are being urged to enter the 2017 Australian Body Art Festival which has a theme of “Wonderland”. Danielle says the theme lends itself to a wealth of interpretations, “Wonderland conjures up thoughts of Alice in Wonderland, Winter Wonderland and anything in the wonderland of your imagination such as mystic dragons and magical forests.” “We encourage and challenge artists from a range of backgrounds to get involved as there is something for everyone – artists with experience in fine art and visual art, make up and special effects, textile art, street art, airbrush sign craft, spray painting, graphic art, fashion and photography.” “If you’ve never competed in an event like this, it’s simply a matter of adapting your skills to use body

paint on the canvas of the human body! And for the wearable art competition, use your skills to create funky fashion using recycled materials.” “Past entrants tell us that it is an experience like no other – a unique chance to work alongside fellow artists and a chance to showcase creativity to a large audience, with some great prizes and a whole lot of fun.” Competition details have been released and registrations are now open on the w e b s i t e www.australianbodyart.com.au. Early bird entry fees apply for all registrations before 1 February 2017. The Australian Body Art Festival is a free non-for profit community event thanks to the generosity of its funding partners Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, Firefly Solutions, Cooroy App, AFABA, Gelignite Jacks, Funtopia, Cooroora Woodworkers, CCTV Specialists and Studio Republic. After making England, New Zealand, then Sydney and Brisbane her home, Simonne Celestine has settled very nicely into the utopia that is commonly referred to as the shire of Noosa. After buying a modest little cottage on Black Mountain she can’t stop wishing that she had discovered the peaceful surroundings she now enjoys a few decades ago. Just last year she scoured the internet to find the perfect writer’s retreat, only to find she already had it beneath her feet. In June 2016 she published her first book, called “In The Shadow of The Acropolis”. It is a memoir based on the experiences of a close friend, also a native of the Sunshine

Coast. Awarded Silver Four Stars by Pacific Book Review, In the Shadow of the Acropolis is a riveting true story of Julia Roberts, an Australian woman who is falsely imprisoned in a Greek prison. Roberts’ story is told to Celestine and readers will be enthralled by her struggle for freedom. Roberts is traveling through Greece, but is detained by police on the suspicious of smuggling drugs into Athens. She is then sent to the notorious Korydallos Prison, which is near the historic Acropolis. Roberts is mistreated for many years and suffers many hardships in prison. While her health suffers, she bonds with her fellow

female prisoners and never gives up hope that she will be exonerated and will return home to Australia. In the Shadow of the Acropolis is a harrowing, but also inspirational story. Celestine brings Roberts’ story to life with her skillful writing and vivid descriptions of Roberts’ life in prison. From the horrific living conditions to the simple joys of eating chocolate croissants in Korydallos, Celestine captures Roberts’ story with meticulous detail. Roberts’ growth from frightened inmate to brave activist is a subtle evolution. She is shown as being sympathetic to the plight of other female prisoners and bonds with them as they deal with life in jail.

In this book In the Shadow of the Acropolis, the Greek prison system is put on trial. The description of the corruption of Korydallos prison is laid bare with Roberts’ account of how the prison complex abused male and female prisoners. Simonne Celestine will be in house at the Cooroy Library on Tuesday, February 14th, coinciding with Library Lovers’ Day, then at the Noosaville Library on Wednesday, March 8th, coinciding with International Women’s Day. She would love the opportunity to say hello, so please come in and talk with her. She would be delighted to personally sign a book for you. Her book “In The Shadow of The Acropolis”

is available at a number of on-line book distributors, both in paperback and ebook form. You can also pick up a copy from The Written Dimension Book Shop & ABC Centre in Noosa Junction, as well as in the recently opened shop at the Butter Factory Arts Centre in Cooroy.

The Lord help those caught helping themselves When we are treated to another infamous exhibition, Is it any wonder that politicians are viewed with well-earned derision?? While the Minister displayed such utter contempt, Who is going to be next, no MP seems to be exempt. It’s like a disease, a drug, an addiction, Sometimes it appears to be almost an obsession. The legislators have craftily made the job description, Almost impossible for a true interpretation. Which makes it convenient to present an excuse, And plead innocence for a blatant misuse. Many are obliged to pay ill-gotten gains back, In private enterprise offenders would face the sack. The public mistrust them, they have no pride, They come from every party, they leap from every side. The system has been plundered for any an expensive year, And no one is game to fix it, due to plain political fear. The taxpayers are fed up, and justifiably cranky, And they demand the rorts be fixed, and they’ll brook no hanky-panky. When half the people realise they get paid for not working and the other half realises that it is not worth working because half the money goes to someone else, then that is the beginning of the end for any nation! Jim Dunstan

COOROY RAG RV Caretakers Dave and Jo moving on

DAVE and Jo Hanchard and Ms Minnie have been caretakers at the Cooroy RV Stopover for the last six months. “It’s been a wonderful break off the road for us and we’ve been able to catch up with

friends and family,” said the couple. “We were pleasantly surprised by the growth of Cooroy since we left in 2013. It has been an absolute pleasure to promote our old home town and the many unique businesses here. Most of which we have patronised while here. We shall miss our mates at IGA, Mulberry Café, German Bakehouse, Dhoms and RSL and all the friendly people in town. We’ll also miss the girls at the Cooroy Rag and Jim Dunstan’s poems. We hope Sgt Mal has a speedy recovery.” Although it has been quiet since the very hot weather has hit, Dave says just the receipts handed in by travellers, amounts to an average $11,000 per month that’s going back into the town. “We hope the Cooroy RV Stopover will continue to prosper and we’re sure to be back again. Please welcome Lin and Alison who take over from us on February 1st.”

news Insurance – don’t be caught without it Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy IT’S never an easy subject to talk about and we hope we never need it, but I’m regularly in discussion about the life’s unexpected outcomes with our customers. Discussions range from unexpected employment or job security or possible reduced hours. Another is the perceived lack of alternative employment options should they wish or have to change employers or career paths. We tend to insure our home, cars and housing contents. However, we aren’t aware or simply don’t often tend to insure one of our most vital assets - our income. Take Personal Risk Insurance for example. What is it? Personal Risk Insurance comes in a number of forms but essentially it is an insurance policy that is taken out to cover an individual in the event they suffer from a serious illness, an injury or death. This includes Income Protection Insurance, Total and Permanent /Disability Insurance, Trauma Insurance and the most commonly known, Life Insurance. Income Insurance is also becoming more and more important these days. This type of insurance is designed to replace your income if you are unable to work due to illness or injury. Most policies can cover up to 75% of your before tax income and it is paid directly to you the customer. They don’t pay it directly to banks or realestate agents etc. There is generally a waiting period which means it does not cover people for short term illnesses such as mild cases of the flu or an absenteeism of 2-3 days. More and more people are now being encouraged to look at Income Insurance for a number of reasons, including:

• A heavy reliance on two incomes to service bank debts and lifestyle. What happens if one of the incomes suddenly disappears? • Insufficient savings or back-up options should income cease. • An increase in statistics around likelihood of ill health before the age of 65. • An increase in statistics around serious illness such as cancer, heart disease and stroke. The topic of Income Protection Insurance is a big one. Some people may already have some limited coverage through their employee superannuation. Additionally premiums paid for these policies often can have tax advantages. My advice is to speak with a professional Financial Planner who can listen to your needs and then advise you of your options. Next time, I’ll go into more detail about Trauma Insurance, Total and Permanent Disability Insurance and Life Insurance. If you have any questions about insurance of any kind, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

What is trauma insurance? Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* TRAUMA insurance is a safety net that can support your family while you get back on your feet. With one in two Australian men and one in three Australian women expected to be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85 1, many families are learning first-hand how an illness can interrupt their lives. But should the worst occur, the home loan and school fees will still have to be paid – on top of medical expenses – while you work towards getting better. Trauma insurance can help you achieve this. How does it work?

Trauma cover provides you with a lumpsum payment if you’re diagnosed with a specified medical condition – such as cancer or a stroke – undergo a specified medical procedure, or are seriously injured, as set out in the policy. In most cases, once your claim has been approved, you’ll receive your lump sum without a waiting period. And you don’t have to be employed to receive the lump sum. So whether you’re working or not you’ll be able to recover without financial stress. If you’re a parent, you could consider insuring

your children too. If your child becomes ill or injured as set out in the policy, a lump sum could help relieve the burden of your child’s ongoing care. As with any type of insurance, it’s important to understand how much insurance you need. What about private health cover? Private health cover will generally only help pay your hospital and medical bills, and possibly some rehabilitation expenses, depending on the extras cover you have. A trauma insurance lump sum can help you meet expenses on top of this, such as additional medical costs,

repaying your home loan and other debts, covering the costs of rehabilitation or any modifications you may need to make to your home, in the case of a serious illness or injury. Make sure you get back on your feet It’s easy to avoid thinking about challenging life experiences like an illness or injury. In fact, it feels better when we look on the bright side. But it’s possible to be positive and practical at the same time, by insuring yourself for when you and your loved ones may really need it. Please contact Provision Wealth about how trauma

insurance could help you and your family. Do you ever wish you could capture all of your dog’s special moments, photos, stories and unique, funny and naughty things they have done? In the moment, you think you will remember that special moment or the random funny photos will remain somewhere on your phone, camera or computer, only to find months or years later your memory has faded or the photos have disappeared? Unfortunately, our precious pooches are only with us for such a short time, but their personality and friendship leaves an impression on our hearts for a lifetime. Belinda Marinus, head dog trainer at Heel Sit and Stay knows how it feels, which lead her to create a new product for dog lovers called “My Life as Your Dog - Milestones, Messes and Mementos”. “My four legged friends both present and past have all been uniquely different with quirky personalities and behaviours with some incredibly funny moments along with some destruction and

mishaps,” says Belinda. “As a dog trainer I have met hundreds of dogs and they are so individual. I love hearing their good, bad and funny stories but I decided it wasn’t enough just to talk and laugh about our funny four legged friends, I wanted to capture those memories in a tangible way forever.” “My Life as Your Dog – Milestones, Messes and Mementos” is a wonderful keepsake book for all dog owners to record their pooch’s individual personality, misadventures and of course, their important information. This wonderful interactive book has room for your own notes, photos and stories, some beautiful illustrations and even tips and tricks to entertain your four legged friends. IT was Jean Leigh’s dream to create a Boutique Pet Hotel that was, in her own words, that would be ‘ small enough to really care’. This has come to fruition as 4 Paws Pet Boarding in Traveston. Located on a serene 28 acre property, 4 Paws Pet Boarding can cater for 12 cats and 6 dogs in great style. The cats can be accommodated either in 6 Chalets or 6 Balcony suites, either of which has its own individual outside area. Each one is decorated in a style that replicates a home. The 6 dogs rooms are designed in a Motel style all having a sleeping area and a lounging area as well as an outside run. The Motel rooms are large and 4 of them can easily accommodate 2 dogs from the same family. Each one is themed in a different style eg. Beachy, British or French. THE Shop @ BFAC, which opened on 1 December, is a new addition to The Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre, and has attracted more than 36 participating local artists, exceeding all expectations. Sales were exceptionally strong in the lead up to Christmas and volume has continued into the New Year attracting not only local residents, but visitors from the south-east, interstate and overseas. Work by the artists reflects a range of art forms including paintings, pottery, glass, silk painting, paper, jewellery, artists’ greeting cards and mosaics. The shop is manned by the artists as volunteers who are on hand to explain their work to visitors. “It’s really an artists’ co-operative”, said Carol Watkins, member of the Board of Cooroy Future Group Inc, and member of the Butter Factory Management Committee. “Each

artist curates his or her space, spends time in the shop, greets visitors and handles sales. It’s a model that is working well, with both artists and visitors liking it”. Most of the artists have indicated they will continue their presence in The Shop @ BFAC over the coming months and this has contributed to the expansion of the Butter Factory’s presence in the Noosa hinterland. Businesses in Cooroy have attributed additional growth to the extra visitors being generated by the rejuvenated BFAC. The Butter Factory Arts Centre has been enjoying success over the last 12 months with a variety of exhibitions and workshop and has just entered its second year of operations under the Cooroy Future Group Inc’s management since being handed back to the community by the Noosa Shire Council.

health Help Nathan achieve his dream

COOROY RAG

15 year old Nathan Horan has just been chosen in the Queensland Under 17 State Emerging Team for basketball which is traveling to the USA in June. Nathan’s been playing basketball for around 7 years representing the ACT for 5 of those years in various age groups before he and his family moved to Black Mountain 2 ½ years ago. Since that time he’s represented Noosa Cyclones, Sunshine Coast Phoenix, Sunshine Coast Schoolboys and Noosa District High School in various age groups. For the last few months Nathans has been travelling to and from Brisbane and Caloundra trialling for the Queensland Under 18 Team. Following the Under 18 State Championships, which were held in Caloundra last week, he was notified of his selection in the Queensland Men’s Under 17 Basketball Team to travel to Los Angeles in June to participate in various tournaments. Nathan is trying to raise funds through gofundme.com/nathans-usacampaign to help with travel costs, accommodation, uniform purchase, food and so on. “It has always been my dream to play in the USA and to be selected to play for Queensland is such a great honour,” said Nathan. “I decided to set up the fund raising page, not because I am lazy, but because of my heavy training schedule (training for Queensland team and also Sunshine Coast Rep team at same time … training 4 days a week and playing in competitions 2 days

Nathan Horan shoots for the US per week), school commitments and I am also doing a school-based traineeship at You First Personal Training Studio. All of this doesn’t leave much time for any other fundraising activities as my Mum and I travel over 1200km a week for basketball.” If you can help Nathan achieve his dream visit gofundme.com/nathans-usa-campaign to donate.

Volunteers wanted

What’s the big deal if you get dehydrated? WHAT is the big deal if you get dehydrated? Well, did you know that more than half of your body weight is water?! No wonder we feel that we are not able to survive for more than a few hours without having a drink! We NEED water for our bodies to function correctly, and without it, we will end up very sick ... here’s why!! Water is the biggest part of all the fluids that travel around in the body, and there is a large amount of water inside your cells too. Even your bones have a considerable amount of water in them. The water moves as part of the blood and lymph circulating through the body, giving food and oxygen to the cells and helping waste to be taken away. Water also carries digestive enzymes around our gastrointestinal tract, so that our food can be broken down. Anything that the body doesn’t want is also carried with water in the blood to the kidneys, which make urine, and some water stays in the gut, then comes out as faeces. The body also uses water to keep our core body temperature at about 37degrees Celsius. Water is in the fluids that keep joints moving smoothly. Water is also the main component of saliva and mucous in the body. So what are the most common signs you may notice in a person who is dehydrated? Increased thirst, Dry or sticky mouth, Feeling tired or sleepy, Deceased urine output (with urine looking a dark yellow colour), Sunken eyes, Few/nil tear production in the eyes, Headache, Dizziness, Sunken fontanelles in an infant (the soft spot on the top of the head), Poor skin elastic-

ity (skin sinks back slowly to its normal position when pinched). Oh you usually have a sports drink when you think you’re dehydrated? You’re wondering why you should pay extra to use the Oral Rehydration Salts from your pharmacy. In order to rapidly rehydrate the body and retain the fluid that has been consumed, it is important to have the right levels of glucose (sugar) and electrolytes (salts, and in particular sodium) in the solution. Usually, sports drinks have lots of sugar (to make them taste good) and not enough sodium, therefore interfering in the rehydration process. Rehydration formulas from our LiveLife pharmacies are formulated to contain the correct concentration of these active ingredients. So here are some final tips from liveLife Pharmacy in Cooroy on preventing dehydration this Summer: Avoid the hottest part of the day for sporting activities if possible Wear loose, light-coloured and comfortable clothing – remember that dark colours absorb heat Ensure you are wearing sunscreen and a hat that shades your head, neck, ears and face – sunburn may stop your body from being able to cool itself down properly Hydrate with water or oral rehydration salt therapy before, during and after sport/ exercise/alcohol consumption. Alcohol dehydrates the body, so avoid drinking any alcohol if you are going to be doing anything that may increase your risk of dehydration. Be alert and check for symptoms of heat stress and dehydration LiveLife and stay cool and hydrated this Summer!!

What are Vestibular disorders PHYSIOTHERAPIST Lara Titlestad at Advanced Physio Cooroy has worked as a specialist neurological physiotherapist in the UK and has gained experience in the assessment and treatment of vestibular disorders. What are Vestibular disorders: The vestibular system is a three dimensional spirit level that orientates us to the environment and gives the brain information about head and eye movements. There are many reasons why someone may suffer from a vestibular disorder. It may occur following a virus, an infection or a heavy hit to the head. In some cases dizziness or vertigo is caused by crystals, which are located in a part of the vestibular system, being displaced and results in a condition known as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). However, vestibular disorders may also occur without any clear cause. If the vestibular system is not working properly you may experience symptoms such as: Vertigo (feel as though the whole room is spinning around you); Dizziness or lightheadedness; Nausea; Problems with your balance; Feeling as though you are veering to one side; Sensitivity to head and eye movements; Falling or having near falls; Visual disturbances (blurring or increased sensitivity with certain activities such as walking in crowds, reading or working on a computer); Reduced concentration or increased anxiety with certain activities. Vestibular disorders can be very debilitating and many people wrongly believe that they should avoid certain activities that make them feel dizzy or otherwise provoke their symptoms. This can however result in longer term problems with dizziness and balance. At Advanced Physio Cooroy, Lara can effectively assess your symptoms and provide you with a rehabilitation program that will help to retrain your brain to effectively cope with the actions or

environment’s that provoke your symptoms so that you can become symptoms free and regain your confidence. If your symptoms are the result of BPPV, there are a number of manoeuvres that can be performed which serve to reposition the crystals in your vestibular system and effectively treat your symptoms. If you would like any further information regarding vestibular disorders or would like to book an initial consultation with Lara, please contact Advanced Physio Cooroy on 07 5447 7670. Initial consultations for vestibular patients are 45 minutes in length to allow an appropriate time to assess you and start a treatment plan.

Bed 3; Bath 1; Car 2; Pool; 2021m2. Offers over $410,000. Cooran is considered one of the prettiest places to live in the Noosa Hinterland - and this potentialpacked property is located in the town’s best street! Boasting 2 road frontages, amazing mountain views, a separate studio, swimming pool and a large shed, it’s worth every penny! A much loved family home for more than 28 years, this peaceful, private property sits at the end of a cul-de-sac at the very top end of town, yet is only 150m from the village shop, primary school, sports facilities and train station. Elevated for the views and breeze, the 2021sqm block is level and well established, and really is one of the best locations in the area. Due to its position, it also delivers the most amazing views of not one but three mountains - Pomona, Cooran and Pinbarren - as well as the Cooran Tablelands. The low set, level entry

brick home features 3 bedrooms, all with builtin robes, plus a main bathroom, with separate shower and bath, vanity unit and separate toilet. The master bedroom has a ceiling fan and a glass sliding door to the verandah, as well as plenty of room to add an ensuite. The living areas are open plan, with the added benefit of reverse cycle airconditioning, and pretty views out of every window. The spacious kitchen features a servery to the dining room, as well as a gas cook top, near-new electric oven and a wonderful north-facing view of the gardens from the large window. Neat and tidy throughout, the home also includes a large laundry, wonderful wraparound verandahs, town water and other services. The separate studio is a major bonus here, offering all sorts of uses, from teenager’s retreat, to guest accommodation or even an artist’s studio. Complete with cast iron

fireplace, air-conditioning and a bar fitted with a solid timber slab, this is an extra that’s hard to beat. Mind you, the impressive list of inclusions continues when you step outside and discover the gorgeous, resort-style saltwater pool, complete with waterfall. Ideally positioned between the studio and the main house, it’s just perfect for those hot summer days. Fully fenced with two separate yards, the gardens are ideal for kids and pets, with vehicle access to the whole property and plenty of off-street parking. In addition, there’s a 2bay carport - big enough to park the caravan and the boat! Throw in a separate, lock-up workshop, complete with work benches and shelves. This property would suit many buyers, including first home buyers, families, or even those downsizing from acreage but still wanting a peaceful lifestyle. You’re close to the lovely Noosa Trails Network here, and just 5 minutes from Pomona, where you’ll find shops, restaurants, medical facilities, cafes and schools. The Noosa beaches are just 30 minutes away, and it’s a quick 20 minute drive to the major centre of Gympie. is a delight. Surprisingly large, the home is bright and breezy all year round, thanks to its vaulted ceilings, air-conditioning, ceiling fans and neutral colour scheme. There are 3 comfortable bedrooms - and the master boasts built-in robes plus a delightful Juliet balcony with a view of Pomona Mountain. Spacious and light, with a sink and air-conditioner, this space would be perfect as guest accommodation, a home office, or indeed as an artist’s studio. Space and storage will never be a problem here, with a two-bay shed plus

workshop next to the house, plus a double carport, a lock-up workshop and garden shed. As you’d expect from a property like this, the gardens are both established and picturesque, with a great variety of fruit trees, including lemon, lychee, carambola (star fruit), japoticaba and wax jambu. Your options here are endless - keep the property as is; use the space to build your dream home and rent out the cottage, or take up the subdivision and profit. Neat and tidy and ready to rent out or move right in now, this is a rare opportunity in one of the hinterland’s most sought-after locations. What a year it was for the Impact crew

LAST year on the 13th of December the Impact Boxing Academy celebrated the end of another successful year for the club with their Annual Christmas party and Presentation Day. In 2016 the 16 fight team members that are “Team Impact” had 116 bouts with 83 wins from those bouts. Domestically the team

won 5 Australian Titles, 5 State Titles, 7 Wide Bay Titles & 6 National Golden Gloves Titles. Internationally the team won 5 Gold medals and 1 Silver medal in Poland and 2 Celtic Cup Titles in Ireland. “To say that I am proud of you all is an understatement,” said trainer Mark Evans. “Your results speak for

themselves and are proof of your hard work and dedication. With some of our junior pee wee boxers ready to make their debut next year, the club is continuing to go from strength to strength. Bring on 2017! Team Impact has already had some massive news to start the year. I will keep you posted in the next issue.

Fundraising opportunity for your club THE Cooroy Community Bowls Club are organising an event that could make you many dollars. The Hub in Opal Street, Cooroy, are offering, free of charge, their venue for you to hold a fundraiser of your choice. In the past fundraisers have raised up to $1000 for their clubs. You will have the venue to do as you please, but the suggestion would be – Bowling for 1 hour (longer or shorter, up to you). Other games like ping pong, croquet, even marbles if you like, can be organised. There are many possibilities. Of course raffles always add to the tally. To win this event you are invited to Crack-AJack. Basically, it is a fun event for non-bowlers (or ones with limited experience) to compete against each other in a fun filled weekly event for six weeks. (Note – official registered bowlers will not be allowed. Social players may participate with the approval of the organisers). Your team can have as many people as you want as long as three turn up each Tuesday night for the six weeks. You may even find a sponsor to pay for this. Commencing on Tuesday, February 14, 6.15 to 8pm. Bowls equipment will be provided free of charge. Some tuition if and when required free of charge. The Cost is just $12 per person per week. Contact Yvonne Pattinson justyvonne@bigpond.com or phone 5447 7716 to nominate or for further information.

“A massive shout out to Chris Cashman for all his help in the gym and to all the parents that support these kids as they chase their dreams. A big thank you also to Mel, Payton and Alec for their support for not only the club but my sometimes painful self as well.” 2016 Award receipients: Male Fighter of the year - Tyler Blizard; Female Figther of the year Taylah Robertson; Fight of the Year - Ella Boot; Tenacity Award - Sam Cameron-Hands; Cory Whitmore /Alex Slade

Memorial - Brock Shelley; Most Improved Kayden Mercieca; Best Female Prospect- Chloe Halley; Best Male Prospect - Coen Allman; Most Active Fighter Coen Allman; Impact Champion Awards Most Halley; Lachie Proctor; Byron McKeown; Cameron Little; Ben CameronHands; Luke Martin; Incentive Awards - Coen Robinson; Paige Robinson; Sam Coby; Emilly Coby; Dysis Gray; Slade Gray; Tammin Lange; Sam Proctor; Chris Proctor.

THE Opal Street green will be ready to play today (Wednesday 1st of February) so please come along at 1pm and have a ‘practice day’ to get ready for your Business Bowls tonight, or the High Rollers on Thursday 2nd, or for the Hinterland Local League game on the 4th Feb - or just come along to get the New Year rolling. As this is ‘Opening Day’ of the New Year - this afternoon game is FREE along with a free afternoon tea. Everyone welcome. Please book. Russell 5447 7716.

Gymnastics off to a flying start

THE Cooroy Gymnastics Club is already off to a flying start in 2017 with a new coach, two new grants and 3 gymnasts preparing for Senior State Championships. The Club welcomes new coach Rico Ramerez and his family to Cooroy for the start of the 2017 season. Rico was a member of the Philippines National Team for many years, competing internationally for his country. Since his retirement from competition he has coached in the Philippines, Singapore, China and Australia. He brings a wealth of gymnastics experience to the club and will specialise on the boys program. This year the Cooroy Gymnastics Club will have 3 gymnasts competing at the Queensland Senior State Championships including its first level 10 competitor, Kyle McCartney. The gymnasts, Kyle McCartney, Finlay Jones and Kaitlyn Howser have already started training and will first compete in March at South East Queensland Regional Championships and then in Aprils State Championships. After receiving two grants in 2016 which saw upgrades to landing areas and bars,

the Cooroy Gymnastics Club have received two grants to be completed early in 2017. The club has received a major grant from the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing to install a new competition and training floor area. This is especially good news for our competitive gymnasts as it will be the same floor they compete on at major competitions, but it will also benefit and assist in developing skills for all gymnasts at the club. Cooroy Gymnastics has also received a grant from the Noosa Council to upgrade its foam landing pit which will see the installation of a trampoline underneath to soften entries along with new safety padding. Soon the club will offer one of the best equiped gymnastics training facilities outside Brisbane offering coaching by some of the best coaches. Gymnastics classes start on Monday for the new School term. For enrolment information ph.54425800 or www.cooroygymnasticsclub.com.au

NOOSA Council presents the Noosa Come-n-Try Sports Arvo to give primary school age kids a chance to try out some winter sports ahead of the winter season. Local sporting groups will provide free fun activities in soccer, tennis, rugby league, gymnastics, rugby union, orienteering and AFL on Wednesday 15 February, 3pm5.30pm. The event will be held at Sel Bonnel Oval, Cooroy Sports Complex, Mary River Road, Cooroy. Council’s Community Development Manager Alison Hamblin says past Come-n-Try afternoons have been very popular with local kids. “It’s really a great afternoon out. The kids have a healthy snack before they start, and then they have a go at a wide range of winter sports for about two hours. It gives them a great taste of each to help them choose what they’d like to take up,” she said. “It’s always fun, and it’s really helpful for the local groups that get a few extra signups for the winter season.” For more information about the afternoon visit Council’s website: www.noosa.qld.gov.au/come-try. To register your children, email their names, ages and school to commdev@noosa.qld.gov.au or phone (07) 5329 6451.
