Art Award entry deadline extended NOOSA Regional Gallery has extended the 2016 Noosa Art Award entry deadline to midnight, Sunday 14 February, 2016. Gallery Director Nina Shadforth says she is excited to see this year’s entries. “I’d love to see some really mixed media contemporary works on the wall and see people stretch the theme to its limit. You often see quite literal interpretations, but I love seeing how far people can take it,” she said. “We have received applications from a number of local artists so far and I’m keen to see how far the news of this year’s Noosa Art Award has spread, and what kind of work this will translate to in our second iteration,” she said. Past entrant in the national art award and highly commended category winner, Carley Cornelissen, welcomed news of the extended deadline this week, which will provide her and other artists more time to submit entries. The local mixed media artist, who is trekking in Tasmania, was among the many artists who at-

tended the first Noosa Art Award’s opening night, which showcased a diverse collection of art. “It’s interesting to see what kind of artists you end up showing with,” Ms Cornelissen said. Ms Shadforth said other artists had also welcomed the Gallery’s decision to extend the deadline to Sunday, 14 February. Judges will choose a selection of finalists to showcase in an exhibition at Noosa Regional Gallery, from Friday, 6 May, through to Sunday, 26 June. Winners will be announced at the gala opening, 4pm, Saturday, 7 May, 2016. The Noosa Art Award is a national and acquisitive contemporary award open to Australian artists and designers working in 2D or 3D medium. Entries must reflect the unique character of modern Australia’s coastal or hinterland environments, urban or natural. Entries for the 2016 Noosa Art Award close midnight, Sunday February 14. The days of the old school lunchbox BACK to school. Yes, it’s that time again. Uniforms are ready, books are covered, the littlies have been prepped for life in the school yard and parents are scouring the supermarket shelves for something to pack in their children’s lunchbox that’s nutritious yet tasty enough to get eaten. It’s a tough assignment. My children are well out of school, but occasionally they’ll drag out their days of the old school yard stories and there’s always much eye rolling about the trouble I went to (or lack of it) to entice them to their lunchboxes. So here’s a few tips for those starting out, but don’t be surprised if your enthusiasm wanes after years of packing those boxes, no matter how pumped you feel after buying the latest and greatest cool packs and containers. Remember, there’s nothing wrong with Vegemite sandwiches if that’s what they will eat and an apple a day keeps the doctor away. • You know what your kids will and won’t eat, the trick is to incorporate those foods into the school lunchbox. Don’t pick this time to introduce new flavours to their palate. • Some kids are happy to eat the same thing every day, but most are more likely to be tempted if you offer up some variety. This doesn’t have to be time consuming pinwheel works of art, sometimes just a different bread can peak their interest. (I found that cutting the crusts off the occasional sandwich can be enough of a

change). Try using a variety of breads to keep things interesting. Bread rolls, baguettes, bagels, mountain bread and crisp bread crackers can break up the monotony of a Vegemite sandwich on sliced white. • Peeling and chopping fruit and vegetables into ready-to-eat bite-sized pieces makes them more appealing. A whole orange is likely to be recycled for a couple of weeks. • Adding cheese to a lunch box is a great way to serve children some dairy to boost their calcium intake. Cut some into small squares and add a few crackers to a ziplock bag. • Remember that the food will be in the lunchbox for several hours so include an icepack (one that’s defrosted enough by lunchtime so they’ve got a nice icy old drink to enjoy – water is best but fruit juices (you can water them down) or a flavoured

milk go down better for most. • Make it easy for them. No one wants to eat something in front of their friends that’s messy or smelly. If you make wraps don’t overstuff them so it falls to pieces. Keep the salad simple. It might look fancy to stuff it with every colourful vegetable, but tomato and beetroot go soggy, so stick with cold meats or canned tuna or salmon and cheese, lettuce and carrot, and a smear of mayo or sauce if they like it. • Before you pack the ring pull cans of fruit, fish or whatever, be sure they can open them. • If your children like sushi, this is a great alternative to sandwiches. • Avoid packing too many treats and processed foods such as chips and biscuits or you’ll find this is all they’ll end up eating and the sandwich will go in the bin. School children have different nutritional needs to those of preschoolers or toddlers. Once children start school, their energy requirements increase as they become more active and grow more quickly. School children usually have a high energy requirement for their size and require foods that are high in energy but also rich in nutrients. A good supply of protein, calcium, iron and vitamins A and D is necessary during the primary school years. Calcium is needed for healthy tooth development and, together with vitamin D, helps make bones stronger. Good luck!

One thing that makes me barking made, Is when I read that the Hospice Katie Rose, In spite of the wonderful reputation it has had, Because of lack of funds, may have to close. I wonder if anyone in authority knows, And if they do know, do they really care, About the wonderful work of Katie Rose, And the gift that many have found there. It offers a wonderful contribution, A blessed harbour in our society, A place of humanity, and unconditional dedication, The sheer goodness in these people, their gentleness, their nicety. I feel lost for words when I see, The millions of dollars handed our each year, For the momentary fireworks, which they boast about with glee, Yet they deny Katie Rose, and no doubt other causes, equally sincere. But I don’t mind fireworks as childish fun, I used to enjoy my fireworks when I was a little kid, But examples like this show a loss of bureaucratic feeling by someone, A hint of hypocrisy under the governmental lid.

AN unapproved tomato and cucumber growing facility near Lake Macdonald has been subject to residents’ complaints since it was first constructed in 2013. Generator noise, sediment and erosion control and the safety of Lake Macdonald Drive were issues, but the facility came under increased scrutiny early in 2015, when floodwaters associated with Cyclone Marcia caused debris from the tomato plants, growing media and plastic being washed into the nearby waterway. Council planning staff retrospectively assessed the operation and recommended in November last year that the farm be allowed to go ahead, subject to a list of conditions including: the raising of the plants off the ground on racks; a nominated flood warden to be on site at all times during operation hours, and a “flood refuge area” that can handle “an extreme flood event”. In backing the decision and voting to accept the planner’s, report Cr Wellington said: “It would be nice if people simply started the process of applying for approval when they were supposed to start”, rather than council having to “continually push them”. Cr Jurisevic was also “disappointed that due process did not occur in the first place”. In early December last year, the applicant filed a Notice of Appeal in the Planning and Environment Court challenging 12 of the conditions proposed by council planners.

news Choose your credit card carefully Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy WHEN choosing your credit card it pays to do some research. There are literally hundreds to choose from, but it’s important you ensure you choose one that will suit your individual needs. Consider what your expectations are from your card and the way that it’s going to be used each month and try to stay away from the gimmicks attached to them. Most credit cards have a certain number of interest free days ranging anywhere from around 40 and up to 55 days. If you pay your card off in full each month by the due date, generally a longer period of interest free days may be useful for you, giving you benefit of keeping your funds in other interest bearing accounts. This can be particularly useful for people who have mortgage offset accounts, so keeping more money in this account for longer can help you save interest and time off your home loan. If you use your card in this way, you could make use of a credit card that has a higher rate of interest, generally around 18-20% as the interest rate won’t have any bearing and these may even give you a reward. Most banks will offer credit cards that have rewards accumulated by a points basis dependant upon the amount spent on the card. These can be used for many varied options such as shopping vouchers, flights and much more. For people who are after a higher limit, usually a gold card can be offered which will not only have reward points but may also give emergency, medical, legal and travel assistance For those you don’t clear their card in full each month and are paying off a debt there are other cards that will be more suitable. Choose a card that has a low rate of interest to help reduce your debt sooner. Most banks will offer a credit card

with a lower rate of interest, somewhere around 12% - like Bendigo Bank’s Basic Black card. These accounts may not offer all the options of reward points and travel assistance etc. However, a reduced interest rate would suit more people in this situation. Most credit cards will attract an annual fee and these can vary depending upon the card that is selected. If you are looking for the security of a credit card to use for necessary situations only and won’t be a regular user, choose a card that has a lower annual fee. If you don’t wish to ever use the bank’s credit funds and prefer to use your own money, talk to your bank about a debit card on your normal savings account. This will allow the card to be used for purchases in the same way a credit card is used; however you are only spending your own money. So, have a close look at your credit card and make sure you’re using one that’s suitable for your needs. If you would like to discuss this or any other banking need, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au. Geoff Edwards is the Branch Manager of Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank located at 36A Maple Street.

A recent workshop organised by Country Noosa heard that there was growing demand for food products that are produced sustainably and ethically using free range, low chemical systems by local farmers and graziers. Animal welfare was a high priority with the vast majority of respondents expressing very strong concerns about poultry raised in cages, calves and pigs raised in pens and intensive meat chicken farming. Consultant for the Country Noosa Beef and Local Food Systems Project, Brian Stockwell, told the workshop that his research suggests there is a bright future for local producers who can supply quality product to local buyers and markets. Three-quarters of all people surveyed, both online and face to face in Cooroy and Pomona, aim to buy locally grown produce at least once per week. Supporting local producers was the most important reason for this practice; followed by freshness, supporting the

local community and reducing food miles. Dr Stockwell stated “Free range production was a touchstone issue”. The results of the survey suggest Country Noosa should consider developing a local food brand as part of the action plan being developed on the back of the project. “Consumers would place high importance on a brand if it showed the product was accredited to meet animal welfare, sustainable agriculture, organic and or low chemical grass fed beef standards” Dr Stockwell said. Surveyed graziers were very much in tune with consumer sentiment with the majority considering perceive that branding their product as product of the Sunshine Coast / Mary Valley Region is most important. Farmers also thought health benefit, lower food miles, organic and chemical free attributes of their product would be important if a local brand was developed. The majority of graziers

Training in best management practice and marketing and leadership are high on the priority list. were interested in expansion if conditions were right with almost three-quarters (72%) of all respondents were interested in investigating opportunities to connect to a local or regional food system Country Noosa President, Dick Barnes, was very pleased with the output of the workshop that prioritised recommended actions from the research. “It was great to see that the surveyed graziers were largely producing a product that the consumer would like more of” he said. “Now the challenge is to get the whole supply chain working together to get more fresh local produce to local consumers.” Interviews with local wholesale fruit and vegetable and meat buyers as well as local butchers identified numerous opportunities for increasing local supply of fruit and vegetable and meat for wholesale and retail sale. “Unmet demand coupled with spare capacity within local and regional processing enterprises and storage facilities suggests

IF you’re approaching retirement, it could be a good time to review your insurance. You understand how important your insurance is—because you set it up in the first place to care for your loved ones. Insurance played a vital role in protecting your family as you established your career and built your wealth. And now as you look forward to starting a new phase in your life, it’s a good time to reassess your insurance to see if you still have the type and amount of cover that is right for you. As you make the transition to retirement, every dollar counts. So you don’t want to be paying too much for cover that you don’t need. But equally, if something happens you don’t want to be dipping into your savings to pay the bills and pay for essentials. Different strokes... Of course, we’re all different. And you’ll need to take your own personal circumstances into account when working out how much and what type of insurance you need. If the home loan is paid off, the kids have left home and you’re starting to think about the next phase in your life, you might want to reduce your insurance to reflect your lack of financial dependants or your lower debt. But with house prices what they are, the home loan may not be paid off quite yet. With so many young Australians staying at home until well into their 20s, the kids may not have flown the coop. And with life expectancy increasing, more people are approaching their own retirement with elderly parents starting to need extra care. So if you still have significant debt and dependants, you’ll need to take them into account when reassessing your insurance

EMPLOYING Staff: Good people working in your business can be your greatest asset and could also be your greatest cost. But your responsibilities as an employer doesn’t just stop at finding the right person. There are a number of compliance issues you need to be aware of when employing staff. At first it can seem a little overwhelming, but after the initial set up, hiring the right person could be very important to your business success. Things you need to consider when employing new staff: · Provide a tax file number declaration for your employee to complete, then lodge it with the ATO; Determine if the employee is eligible for the superannuation guarantee (SG); If the employee is eligible for SG, are they entitled to choice of super fund?; Ensure the em-

needs. And even if you are relatively footloose and debt-free, now’s not the time to jeopardise your retirement nest egg. So it’s usually a good idea to retain some level of insurance to protect what you’ve built up and protect your dream of a comfortable retirement. Don’t forget, it’s your insurance. So you’re in charge. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that insurance is no longer relevant. You never know what life is going to throw at you.In 2014 AMP paid out hundreds of millions in claims. And people aged 60 or over accounted for: 36% of life claims; 30% of terminal illness benefit claims; 19% of income protection claims; 15% of TPD claims; 11% of trauma claims. It’s a good idea to seek advice. We can help: work out whether you have the right level and type of cover for your stage of life; suggest ways to make your insurance more affordable by changing your level of cover or the way you pay; work out the best way to extend your insurance past retirement, if you need it; see if there are other ways you can protect what you’ve worked so hard to build up, perhaps by changing your investment mix or by taking out a capital guarantee to protect your investments. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 004. Back to school who pays those extra expenses? AS the end of the summer school holidays arrives, parents often face the financial challenges the new school year brings. School costs can include new school uniforms, classroom supplied, extracurricular activity expenses and school tuition and fees. Although it is an exciting time of year, parents who have been divorced, or separated from one another, may be in a difficult situation of attempting to allocate these extra costs between themselves. Even if child support is fully paid, it does not necessarily mean the support will cover these seasonal extra expenses. Australian Law requires that parents have a primary duty to support their children. But what does that really mean? The amount of child maintenance one parent receives from the other is determined through a basic formula that takes into account, among others, the parents’ adjustable taxable income, each parent’s care percentage of the child, and each parent’s cost percentage of the child. Often times, however, a child support assessment simply is not sufficient to cover the extracurricular cost of raising children. The amount of child maintenance paid is meant to provide the receiving parent financial assistance for the basic needs of the children, such as food, shelter and other items for their general welfare. Sometimes this means the parent receiving support is often left with the additional financial burden of providing the children with these “extra items” because the paying parent’s obligation is only confined to the assessed amounts. In these situations, both parents may reach an agreement to make their own arrangements for child support, including extra expenses such as school fees, uniforms etc. This process takes advanced foresight on behalf of the parties, and should the parents come to an agreement, it can be part of a parenting plan or a binding financial agreement. Extra expenses for the children can be substantial, and one parent should not bear this burden simply because one parent’s child support assessment does not necessarily cover these expenses adequately. Although there is no hard line rule in terms of coming to an agreement, the best solution, however, may be to anticipate these recurring costs early on and try to develop a plan with the other parent on how to handle these seasonal expenses in a fair and appropriate manner; for your child’s sake. The experienced Family Law team at SPM Law will provide you with guidance and advice and can help you make the best decisions for you and your family. COOROY RAG police beat

A little piece of history

with Sergeant Mal Scott

WITH the increase of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) devices being deployed to monitor the safe passage of motor vehicles on public roads it has become increasingly important to make sure you keep your car registration and driver’s licence up to date including your address and contact details through the Department of Transport and Main Roads. (TMR) With today’s increasingly busy life style it is very easy to overlook the due dates for car rego’s and drivers licenses so people need to be very aware of the severe consequences for failing to keep these very important pieces of paper up to date. By keeping your address up to date through the TMR it ensures you receive your reminder renewal notices in the mail. If you move and the notice gets sent to an old address that is no excuse when found driving unregistered or unlicensed. The best case scenario is that you only receive fines of between $100 and $800 from the police as the worst case scenario is that you have an accident and due to an oversight on your behalf your insurance refuses to pay which can cost $50,000 or more in repair costs. Repeat offenders for this type of offence also face having their car impounded or immobilised for between 7 and 90 days and having the car forfeited to the crown and sold at auction. To make doubly sure you don’t overlook your due dates set reminders on your smart devices so you just can’t forget as we are detecting more and more normally law abiding citizens driving whilst not registered and licensed. The law is very clear on placing the onus on the driver of any vehicle and for that matter the owner of any vehicle to ensure the vehicle they are driving or the person driving there vehicle is properly able to do so. To help out the community I can provided the following information on how best to check up on car registrations and Driver’s license statuses. The Department of Transport and Main Roads provide a number of methods to check your driver’s licence and vehicle registration including: • Attending any Department of Transport and Main Roads office in person.

• Calling the Department of Transport and Main Roads on 13 23 80. • Physically viewing the expiry date on your driver’s licence or vehicle registration paperwork. New methods have also recently been made available by the TMR which include: • Viewing the Department of Transport and Main Roads website to check the status of your driver’s licence or vehicle registration. For vehicle registration inquiries use this link: www.qld.gov.au/checkrego For driver licence inquiries use this link: www.qld.gov.au/ checkdriverlicence • Downloading the QLD Rego Check App from iTunes App Store or Google Play Store for your mobile device. For iTunes App Store use this link: https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/qld-rego-check/ id919723338?mt=8 For Google Play Store use this link: h t t p s : / / p l a y. g o o g l e . c o m / s t o r e / a p p s / details?id=com.tmr.checkrego&hl=en Personal details of the vehicle owner are not displayed during this search. The owner of any vehicle can check the driver licence status of any person using their vehicle using the above mentioned online driver licence check. This is particularly useful for companies who provide authorisation to employees to use company vehicles. Again personal details of the licence holder are not displayed and only basic details including the status of the licence are shown. A little feedback for those members of the community who have complained about the hooning Lamborghini getting around town and the motor cycle going at warp factor 5 along Elm street. Both have had their wings clipped recently and I would be very surprised if they show up driving like that again. The bike rider especially is facing serious driving offences which carry 2 years monitory licence disqualification and the 90 day impoundment of his bike.

50 years ago, on the 14th of February, 1966, Australia officially became a decimal currency. Bruce Staff, who now lives in Cooroy, was Chief Teller at the Kingsford Smith International Terminal Currency Exchange at the time and at 12.03am he handed over the first new Australian dollar bill to Mrs Thelma Stott who was returning to Australia. A photo of the exchange made the front page of the Sydney Daily Telegraph. Mr Staff said he regrets that he didn’t keep the first dollar off the rank as he’s sure it would be worth quite a bit more these days.

Small changes can have a big impact on your health NUTRITION Means (NuMe) was founded by Jodie Persovic, a local Dietitian and Naturopath who has been helping people improve their health for many years. Jodie runs her clinic in Pomona and is available for individual appointments to address a diverse range of health conditions or even those just wanting to eat better. Jodie started her career twenty years ago as an assistant in a herbal dispensary in Northern NSW. Inspired to help people, she gained university training in Nutrition and Dietetics. Later, seeking to formalise her knowledge of natural medicine, she completed her training in Naturopathy and Herbal Medicine. Recently, Jodie has added a new service for her clients, the NuMe Online Nutrition Programs, released last year. The online programs extend beyond the clinic to the home where it can continue to make a lasting change. Even small improvements in eating patterns can have significant health benefits if they are maintained in day to day life. Jodie says, a common problem is reducing carbohydrate intake (especially sugars) and maintaining it easily; “people often follow a fad diet only to find it doesn’t last”. The NuMe Online programs allow participants to create an eating style that satisfies their food preferences and achieves their health goals. Understanding macro-nutrient balance is the key, and this is done with recipe tables linked to a personalised meal plan. Jodie says that “by the end (of the program or consultancy) I am inspired to see my clients knowing as much about macro-nutrient balance as I do”. As an extension to the DIY-style online coaching programs, Jodie is now launching the NuMe Local Groups. This new program gives participants access to the online tools such as tailored meal plans; personal support from a qualified therapist; and the feeling of being part of a group working together. For those who prefer to work one-onone with their therapist, consultations can also be combined with the online program to bring lasting results. Anyone with an eligible Medicare EPC plan can receive a rebate on the appointment and there is Hicaps for those with private health insurance. Her website, nutritionmeans.com.au, has all the details and she is happy to answer enquiries by email (jodie@nutritionmeans.com.au) or phone (0419 668 803).

Why is being Sun Smart important? OVERexposure to both the sun and artificial (e.g. solariums) ultraviolet radiation (UVR) can cause sunburn, skin and eye damage and skin cancers. UV radiation is part of the sun’s rays that damages the skin. Damage to the skin occurs as soon as UVR hits the skin. Sunburn is the extreme form of this damage. UVR cannot be seen or felt. It is NOT related to temperature, and can be high on a cool day (e.g. skiing on snow capped chilly mountains) or on an overcast day. Clouds do not filter or stop UVR at all. UVR is strongest between 10 am and 3 pm. It can be reflected from shiny or white surfaces to increase exposure, including under shade structures. That is why people on the water, or snow, can sunburn more quickly than expected, and why people sitting under trees or umbrellas beside pools or on the beach can also get sunburnt. UVR comes in different wavelengths called UVA, UVB and UVC. Both UVA and UVB contribute to sunburn, skin ageing, eye damage, melanoma and other skin cancers. UVB is mostly responsible for sunburn and UVA for the deeper, long term skin damage. Remember: • Always use a broad spectrum 30/50+ SPF • To be effective, sunscreen must be applied generously, and rubbed in lightly. • Apply 20 minutes before going into the sun to allow it to bind to your skin • Sunscreen should be applied every 2 hours • Physical rubbing e.g. from towels, chairs, shirts being slipped on and off, will remove sunscreen from the skin • Perform self-checks on your skin every 3 months. Follow up with your GP if you find a: • New spot that is different from other spots around it • Spot, mole or unusual freckle that has changed in shape, size, or colour • Sore that doesn’t heal • Skin spot that you are worried about SLIP on sun protective clothing; SLOP on a 30+ sunscreen; SLAP on a hat; SEEK shade; SLIDE on sunglasses Information supplied by Jacqueline Kiel B. health Prevention and early detection can be a lifesaver FEBRUARY 4 is World Cancer Day and the old adage that prevention is better than cure is definitely the case for Cancer. It may surprise you to learn that at least one in three cancer cases are preventable and the number of cancer deaths could be reduced significantly by choosing a cancer smart lifestyle. More than 13,000 cancer deaths each year are due to smoking, sun exposure, poor diet, alcohol, inadequate exercise or being overweight. There are some simple steps you can take to minimise your cancer risk - quit smoking, eat for health, maintain a healthy weight, be sun smart, limit alcohol, move your body and get checked! Early detection of cancer can also be a life saver and owner of Cooroy Family Practice, Vivianne Dawalibi urges you to get checked by consulting with a doctor about what can be done. “Treatment of Cancer can be more effective when cancer is found early. We have screening programs available in Australia to detect breast cancer, bowel cancer and cervical cancer. These programs are free of charge to people where there is evidence that the screening test can find a cancer at a stage when treatment is more effective,” explained Vivianne. The aim of screening programs is to pick up very early cancers in healthy individuals, who do not have symptoms. The other key to early detection of cancer is to keep an eye out for any unusual changes to your body, such as lumps, sores or ulcers that don’t heal, coughs or hoarseness that won’t go away, coughing up blood, changes in toilet habits that last more than two weeks, blood in a bowel motion, new moles or skin spots, or ones that have changed shape, size or colour, or that bleed, unusual vaginal discharge or bleeding, or unexplained weight loss. If you notice any changes, see your doctor immediately. Cooroy Family Practice is one of the few practices in the region to offer 100% bulk billing with no gap fee to you, ensuring the entire community has access to good medical care. They also offer a unique online appointment booking service via their website. Physiotherapy and vertigo ANYONE who has suffered from vertigo will know that it can be extremely debilitating. Often, sufferers don’t know that physiotherapy can help. Vertigo refers to the sensation of movement, or spinning that occurs due to an issue with your vestibular system (balance system). Vertigo may be used to describe feelings of dizziness, lightheadedness, faintness, and unsteadiness. When your head moves, signals are transmitted to an apparatus in the inner ear called the Labyrinth that is made up of three semicircular canals surrounded by fluid. The labyrinth then communicates this information via the vestibular nerve to areas of the brain that control balance, posture and movement coordination. The most common cause of dizziness is BPPV (Benign paroxysmal, positional vertigo). Others include: Inflammation in the inner ear, Meniere’s disease, neck joint dysfunction, vestibular migraine and acoustic neuroma. Rarely, vertigo can be a symptom of a more serious neurological problem such as a stroke or brain haemorrhage. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a condition characterised by episodes of sudden and severe vertigo (dizziness) associated with head movement. Common triggers include rolling over in bed, looking down and lifting your head to look up. BPPV tends to come and go, with sufferers

experiencing days or weeks of symptoms, then a period of no dizziness. Inside your inner ear, semicircular canals set at different angles are filled with fluid. When your head is moved, the movement of the fluid inside these canals tells the brain exactly how far, how fast and in what direction your head is moving. BPPV is caused by small crystals within the canals (calcium carbonate crystals). These crystals are usually contained within a certain area of the inner ear, but sometimes become dislodged and disrupt the functioning of the balance system. These crystals can become dislodged for various reasons including injury or degeneration, but in almost half of cases, the cause is unknown. Physiotherapists can perform an assessment to determine what side the problem is located on and can then perform a special technique to re-locate the problematic crystals. A home exercise program is given as well to re-inforce the treatment. Physiotherapists will also assess your neck to ensure that it is not contributing to dizziness. It is important to see your GP if you are suffering from vertigo or contact a physiotherapist if you have been diagnosed with BPPV to reduce these symtpoms quickly. Rebecca and Craig Steele own and operate Hinteractive Physio in Cooroy. They can be contacted on 5442 5556.

Join an Exercise Group! EXERCISE can be a hard slog by yourself! I’ll give it a miss today, something else has come up, I’ll do it tomorrow, I’m feeling tired today are some of the excuses you may recognize! One of the best ways to overcome these obstacles is to be part of an exercise group. You know what time it’s on at each week, you are working with people with similar goals and you are getting help with a qualified instructor. Make A Difference Health & Fitness based in Cooroy is able to offer small group fitness train-

ing sessions held in their air conditioned private gym with no more than 6 people where you will be helped with an individually written program for you. Alternatively a group exercise session called “At Your Pace!” held at the CWA hall in Cooroy on a Wednesday at 1.30 is also available. Both are very affordable and will not only help you with your fitness goals but also those I’m not going to exercise excuses! Call 5442 6179 or 0407 597 748 to find out more details.

3 bed, 1 bath, 1 car. Auction Saturday, February 27 at 1pm - 15 Garnet St, Cooroy. It is a tired old cliché, but you do need to listen for when opportunity knocks. And it’s knocking now, with the sale of this long held Cooroy Property located at 15 Garnet Street. The property has been owned by the current owner since 1974 and was a home in the area long before that. This old QLD property has seen much of the growth in Cooroy and may even see more of it, if the buyers decide to develop the site and retain the house. This superbly located site has excellent street presence and street frontage to both Garnet Street and Wattle Street in Cooroy’s CBD. Currently zoned to facilitate unit development right now and with possible potential for future rezoning to commercial there are a range of buyers that will certainly see lots of different options for this property. The home itself has been well cared for and maintained over the years and could easily be rented out to offset some holding costs and remodelled and or expanded if needed to sit alongside future development. Or the options is available to remove it completely. The property will be auctioned onsite at 1pm on the 27th February (if not sold prior) The agent Mark Jones of Wythes Real Estate is confident that the sale will attract a lot of interest and will be conducting open For Inspections at 10.30am to 11.00am each Saturday until the Auction day. To register your interest or to gain further information, please call Mark on 0412 884 347 or drop into the Wythes Real Estate office at 36b Maple Street, Cooroy; visit wythes.com.au or real estate.com.au

COOROY RAG

Pomona table tennis open THE interest in table tennis as a sport and leisure activity has been growing in and around Pomona. A spirited Christmas party enjoyed in December by the local Pomona Table Tennis Group expressed great enthusiasm to fill the coming holidays with some highly exciting table tennis – the inaugural Pomona Table Tennis Open was conceived. On the 17th of January players from Cooran, Kin Kin, Pomona, Cooroy, Noosa, Gympie and the Gold Coast took to the tables in the bright and airy Pomona State School hall. In two divisions 25 keen ladies, gents and juniors challenged each other with, top and bottom spins, smashes, blocks, drop shots and general ball trickery to find the champions of our friendly group. Thrilling rallies provided smiles, laughter and great exercise with spectator entertainment right through the tournament. We were delighted to crown Steven Gardner champion of division one and Agi Szollosi champion of division two. The year ahead will see more inter club competitions engaging with other clubs along the Sunshine Coast. We hope to attract more junior and ladies players. Our home is the Pomona State School hall, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday night, from 5pm onwards. Please contact Bernhard, 5485 0888, for further information. Everyone is welcome.
