Doc calls time after 43 years BY ALEX PURCELL IT’S the end of an era. Cooroy’s longest-serving doctor is hanging up his stethoscope. Doctor David Kirkman is retiring after a stellar 43-year career serving the Cooroy community, delivering some 2000 babies (of which I was one), and introducing Australia-first birthing techniques. David said that he first moved to Cooroy in 1979 because he was looking for somewhere he could enjoy rural life and still be near the beach. “I grew up in Perth and after practising there for a few years as a young doctor, I moved to Queensland. “I heard about Doctor Luck in Cooroy so I came to meet him and on 8 January 1979 I started working with him. “In those days, each town had a policeman, an ambulance, a chemist, a pub and a doctor. Doctors lived in town close to where they worked because they were on call 24/7. Paramedics and mobile phones did not exist.” However, Cooroy was one of the few towns in Queensland to have a hospital, and in years to come, it would continue to be at the forefront of the medical industry. “I delivered my first baby in Cooroy Private Hospital in ‘79. I could speculate as to who the baby is and I think she is now living back in Cooroy. “My legacy I believe was to encourage alternative thinking people to consider aspects of scientific evidence-based medicine and bridge the gap between natural and western medicine. “We introduced water birthing. I think we were probably the first place in Australia to do water births.Back then, water birthing was pretty fringe. But there were a lot of people having home births and I was able to come on board and encourage them to deliver in

hospital. We also delivered babies in a vertical position, using chairs, standing or squatting rather than the ‘stranded beetle’ position.” David delivered some 2000 babies, including his own son, David, before Cooroy Private Hospital closed. “Cooroy Hospital then opened as a rehabilitation hospital run by Sundale. It was the first in Australia. “When I first came to Cooroy, Kabara was still on the drawing board and is now an important facility for aged care. "That was a first too. There were no nursing homes back then.” David opened Maple Street Surgery in 1984, in a surgery

that today, is still proudly located on Level One of the old Cooroy Hospital. “Then, doctors owned their own surgeries. "Today, they’re run by corporate businesses, allowing us to concentrate on patient care.” David said that his patients have changed over the years in Cooroy. “When I first came here, patients worked either at the sawmill, brickworks, railway or were small crop or dairy farmers. “Over time a lot of those industries have changed and stopped. The brickworks, railway depo and sawmill closed and there are no dairy farms left and the butter factory became an art house.

“Today, there are more retirees, as Cooroy has become a place for a tree change and to enjoy the environment.” Something David plans to do, as a fellow retiree come March. “I’d like to explore the area and walking tracks that didn’t exist when I first moved here. “We have a property on Sunrise Road. I’m looking forward to spending time on it, in the garden, with the cattle, reading books and playing with the grandkids. “I will continue to work at Katie Rose Hospice, a specialty field I find challenging.” After David and his wife, Jan, a registered nurse who works alongside David at Maple Street

Surgery one day a week, check out of the hospital building for the final time, they are inviting Cooroy to join them to say goodbye. “We are having a farewell at Cooroy RSL on March 5, from 4 pm, and anyone is welcome to come down and join us for a fizzy.” And help David reflect on what has been an “enjoyable career and country life.” “We raised our three children here, Bonnie, David and Claudia and now have three, almost four grandchildren. "I have mixed feelings about retiring. I'll miss all the fine patients and friends I am involved with, but realise I need to open a new chapter in my and my family's life."

From your editor’s desk Cooroy Rag editor, Alex Purcell

Happy 2022! A new year is a new beginning. It means new challenges, new paths and new adventures. And that’s exactly what this year is going to bring for my family. We have decided to travel Australia. With our two kids and two dogs, my husband and I are hitting the road with no itinerary and no preconceived conceptions, except to find a slower pace of life. While I will still be involved in my beloved Cooroy Rag, writing stories from the road on the big community issues affecting my hometown and its wonderful residents, I will be stepping back from the day-to-day running of the paper, sharing the role with other experienced journalists in our team. So rest assured, your community newspaper is still in wonderful hands. I am humbled and so appreciative of your unwavering support over the past 18 months as we took a sadly defunct paper and rebuilt it back into the community voice you deserve. I am looking forward to continuing to champion and advocate for our community, to give it a voice to garnerprovide change. While I am excited to see more of our amazing country, being born and raised in Cooroy and now a long-term resident of Pomona, this is home - and it always will be. We will be back. If you would like to follow our travels, I will be updating our blog www.ravellingaroundaustralia. com.au with our adventures. Until next time, all the best,

Alex

Cooroy History

INSIDE THIS EDITION

Cooroy's first taxi driver BY LINDA SIVYER SID Lettman was the first taxi proprietor in Cooroy. He was born in Brisbane in September 1902. His mother passed away when he was 11 days old and he was raised by his mother’s sister, Ellen Brittain, and her husband Bill (W F) Brittain. The Brittain family came to Cooroy in 1911 and the Cooroy State School Admissions Register has a person named Sydney Brittain recorded as enrolment number 120, on 19 September 1911. William Brittain was engaged in the sawmilling industry for a time but eventually entered business on his own. During 1920 to 1930, William was a very prominent citizen in Cooroy and district. He and Ellen ran a boarding house that was also to become a nursing home. His entrepreneurial skills had him purchasing the Coronation Hall in 1925. The Hall was used for showing the silent movies of the era, with Ellen playing the piano for dramatic effect. He was President of the Cooroy Ambulance Committee, local councillor, and supporter of many charity

and sporting groups. William's example of serving the community became the role Sid took on in his adult life. After leaving Cooroy State School in 1914, research and records indicate Sid only had one occupation and that was as a car driver - and this was the Cooroy Taxi Service. Sid purchased his first taxi in 1927. One must remember that at that time, you could not gain a civilian driver's licence until you were 21 years of age, which in Sidney's case was 1923. So what did he do in those nine years between leaving school and being able to officially gain a licence? It is known that he drove for many years without his official licence but that was common in those days. Sidney assisted his uncle and aunty with the running of Brittain's boarding house people from that time remember it was common to see a vehicle there being converted from bus

to car, with the body being changed over. . Sid Lettman along with his wife Ethel (nee McLean) provided the Cooroy Taxi Service to the citizens of Cooroy for nearly fifty years. They were there during the great depression years of the late nineteen twenties, World War Two and the troop movement as soldiers took leave to Noosa. During the fifties, sixties, and early seventies that saw the development and changing face of Cooroy and the district, the same taxi service was there. Famous car names such as Chevrolet, Pontiac, Dodge, Oldsmobile, Plymouth and of course Holden, were all part of the taxi fleet over the years. From 1936 until 1972, the Cooroy Taxi Service operated from 47 Cedar Street, Cooroy. Today the name of that part of Cedar Street has been changed to Elm. The house is still there, made from the timber of the Coronation Hall that Sidney's uncle, William Brittain, owned. There were not many who were born, raised and lived in Cooroy for the time period of 1910 to 1970, who did not know Sid Lettman.

Council rejects memorial application BY ALEX PURCELL AN application for a memorial to remember four people killed in a tragic accident in Cooroy has been rejected by Noosa Council. Derek Lange, 11, his mother June, 30, Shayne Parker, 9, and Ricky von Blanckensee, 18, were all killed in a tragic accident at Cooroy Creek on Saturday 5 December 1981. With the support of their families, the Cooroy Rag submitted an application to Noosa Council requesting approval for a plaque to be erected at the site of the tragedy. However, the application was not approved by Noosa Council’s Plaque and Memorials Working Team because it “doesn’t meet the criteria of a ‘significant historical or cultural event’, as set out in the Noosa Council’s Plaques and Memorials Policy”. “There is no question that this event was a tragedy for the family and friends of the deceased and very sad for the Cooroy community,” said the responding Council officer, Oscar Rogers. Shayne’s sister, Kym Parker said that their family is very disappointed with the Council rejecting the application. “Since the initial article [in the Cooroy Rag], we have received

plenty of calls with lots of very positive feedback from those who remember the tragedy. “Although it was a long time ago, the worst tragedy that happened in Cooroy’s history should be remembered.” “We feel a memorial on the site would be appropriate, considering that is where the accident occurred. Surely the cost or upkeep of a simple memorial isn’t too much to ask.” June’s husband and Derek’s father, Terry Lange, said that he thinks rejecting the memorial application is “poor form” on Council’s behalf. “Personally, I think that it's very poor form by the Council to reject something that is an important part of Cooroy's history.” Despite having her blessing, Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart said that there is nothing she can do to overturn the decision. “While it is disappointing, it is a staff decision and one that we have to abide by. “However, I would be honoured to be involved in this memorial and play any part that the family would like me to, in its launch. “I can’t imagine what these families have gone through. It is an unspeakable tragedy, one that has rocked our community. “It hasn’t been forgotten and it

won’t be forgotten.” As a result of Council’s action, the Cooroy Rag is now taking a memorial for Derek, Shayne, June and Ricky into their own hands. With the generous assistance of the Cooroora Woodworkers Club, a beautiful timber seat will be built to honour the four lives lost and their families. Cooroora Woodworkers Club Inc. President, Steve Chapman, said that they are thrilled to be able to assist with this. “This tragic event is part of our local history and supporting our local community is what we’re about. “We are very happy and enthusiastic to come on board with this project and hope to use wood from a local tree for it.” June’s daughter and Derek’s sister, Rachelle Dewhurst, said that she is moved by the gesture of the Cooroy Rag and the Cooroora Woodworkers Club to proceed with establishing a memorial bench. “This endeavour has a community spirit, just like Cooroy all those years ago. It is nice to know that in this present day, this spirit does still exist. Thank you to all those involved for your efforts. They are most appreciated.” Shayne’s father, George Parker, said that he would like to be in-

which is not far from the site of the tragedy. The bench, owned by the community, will be a reminder to all to remember Derek, Shayne, June and Ricky and to reflect on all that has been lost since that terrible day.

EDEN Private Hospital was impacted by the supercell weather event that dumped 110mm of rain on Cooroy in the first week of February. Water inundated some parts of the hospital, but Eden Private Hospital management acted swiftly to assess the situation and mitigate any risk, working in partnership with other services including the Queensland Health Service and Queensland Ambulance

Service, to safely transfer all patients to alternate nearby hospitals, in accordance with its hospital emergency response plan. A hospital spokesperson said management is actively working to rectify the damage caused by the supercell in order to reopen the hospital and resume operations. “Eden Private Hospital will continue to work with public and private healthcare providers, for the transfer of

patients back to Eden Private once repairs to areas impacted are assessed and repairs are complete. “The safety and care of all patients is paramount and has not been compromised.” The supercell weather event caused severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and power outages to more than 11,000 homes across South East Queensland, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Timber seats get a new lease of life COOROY residents were pleased to see recent repairs to public seating about town, with special attention paid to replacing rotting sections of timber in the seats adjacent to the water fountain outside

the Bloomhill Op-shop in Maple Street. Now, Noosa Council has announced it's Pomona's turn, where the distinctive leaf-shape public seating (above) is a little worse for wear. "Council staff are work-

ing with the artist of these seats on a management plan, with some work expected to commence early in 2022," said Bryan O'Connor, Asset Planning Manager, Infrastructure Services.

Hearing set for Kin Kin Quarry court case A HEARING between Noosa Council and Cordwell Resources in the Planning and Environment Court is scheduled for March in a bid to curb local truck traffic. In its case against Cordwell Resources, affidavits from a traffic engineer will form part of Noosa Council’s push to reduce the number of truck movements from the Kin Kin Quarry . In documents filed and uploaded to the Planning and Environment Court website, Traffic Engineer, Stuart Holland from Holland Traffic Consulting, the independent expert engaged by Noosa Council, stated that after assessing correlations between crash data from 2001 to 2020 and the available truck volume data, he considers that an acceptable number of movements would be a total of ten trucks movements per day. Cordwell Resources will have an opportunity to respond to the material filed by Council. Mayor Clare Stewart said that members of the Kin Kin Roundtable remain concerned by the current conditions of the Pomona Kin Kin Road. “The number of quarry trucks on the Pomona Kin Kin Road has increased in the last two years and we have always said that the Pomona Kin Kin Road is not suitable for the number of quarry trucks currently travelling on this road and they continue to pose a great safety risk,” she said. Cr Stewart said that serious fears for the safety of school children and other motorists using the road, were again raised at Tuesday’s Kin Kin Quarry Roundtable meeting. “With school resuming next week, our hinterland

residents, quite rightly, are terrified about the increased truck movements and the return of school buses on the road,” she said. Cr Stewart said the Roundtable is seeking urgent assistance from the State Transport Minister to intervene under Section 46 of the Transport Infrastructure Act 1994. “We have written to the Transport Minister on several occasions, requesting that he or the Director-General step in and use their powers for an interim stop of the trucks on this state-controlled road.” Cr Stewart said. “We are gathering the necessary evidence for our court hearing, but also are requesting the Department of Transport and Main Roads to consider what it can do in the interim to improve safety,” she said.

Council will now progress its application to the Planning and Environment Court, seeking full enforcement orders centred on alleged breaches by the Quarry operator and seeking to address the intensification of use issues. Acting CEO, Larry Sengstock, said Council remained committed to addressing the intensification of use issues through the courts. “Our legal team and Council staff are finalising the material in preparation for final enforcement orders centred on alleged breaches by the Quarry operator, and seeking the operators to limit the number of quarry trucks per day, to avoid convoying and to ensure movements are within the operating hours, with all truck loads covered,” Mr Sengstock told Tuesday’s Kin Kin Roundtable.

Please wait 10 years for parking - Noosa Council BY BRIAN O'CONNOR FRUSTRATED businesses and residents in Pomona may have to wait another 10 years before Noosa Council will act to provide additional parking capacity in the main business district. In Council’s last formal meeting for 2021, Acting CEO of Noosa Council, Infrastructure Services Director, Larry Sengstock, told Councillors, that based on results from the Noosa Council Traffic Study in 2017 and a recent review of parking carried out in 2021, Council considers: “there is sufficient existing parking supply to meet demand in the Pomona study area to 2031”. "When considering parking supply and demand across the study area, parking demand in Pomona does not exceed 75 percent of parking supply. "Therefore, no immediate intervention is required." Mr Sengstock said no

funds had been budgeted for car parking at Pomona in the 10-year forward capital works program. "We acknowledge that parking availability can fluctuate particularly during busy periods. "But, from the information we have, there is no need for additional off-street parking in the area." Meanwhile, Cooran businesses have sent Council a petition calling for more parking spaces to underpin “sustainable, resilient economic growth” for their town. Businesses affected by a downturn in activity during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, said that they see potential customers "driving through” Cooran

because of a lack of parking. Cara Tynan of Noosa Hinterland Brewing Co., Cooran, said that businesses in the town had lost trade because visitors were unable to find a parking spot in busy times. Cara said this had resulted in cars turning around and going home. Cooran's parking woes were discussed on-site at a recent ‘Meet the Councillors' session, at which relief measures were discussed. Subsequently, at the December General Meeting of Noosa Council, Cr Brian Stockwell tabled the petition signed by 17 local businesses, requesting that the Council act. The petition was organised by Brad Patten of the Cooran Community Store. Councillors voted to accept the petition and requested that Noosa Council CEO consider the issue and 'take appropriate action.'

Dogs sniffing out endangered gliders

DOGS are currently using their noses to help to sniff out the friends and foes of land management practices. Noosa and District Landcare obtained a Landcare Led Bushfire Recovery Grant for a glider survey and restoration project, which started in late January. In the project, sniffer dogs will be trialed to understand how well they can find endangered Greater Gliders, which are notoriously difficult to locate using traditional methods such as nocturnal spotlight searches. Noosa and District Landcare, Business and Partnerships Manager, Rachel Lyons said, Greater Gliders

typically reside in the tree canopy, as high as 30 to 50 metres from the ground. “From the research we have seen, only four to seven per cent of gliders are seen by people using standard visual surveys,” Rachel said. She said the sniffer dogs will be used to locate glider scat in the national park and on private land where they are thought to be found. “We have a team of 15 volunteers who have been trained to work on the project.” Locating glider populations is crucial to ensuring the species’ survival, so land managers are able to focus

their efforts on protecting and managing their unburnt habitat and old trees with large hollows, managing pests and installing nest boxes for the animals where they are needed. “We’ll test the dogs by seeing if their location of glider scat correlates with our normal survey technique,” she said. The $14 million Landcare Led Bushfire Recovery Grants Program is supporting projects in regions impacted by the Black Summer Bushfires of 201920, and is funded by the Australian Government’s Bushfire Recovery Program for wildlife and their habitat.

The trophy, previously held by 2020 winner, Pomona Newsagency, will be up for grabs again this year with the latest news being that the 2022 Pomona Business Christmas Decorations Competition will be more competitive as several enterprises are saying that they hope to exceed the high standard of decorating set by the 2021 Award Winner, Pomona Distilling Co.

RESIDENTS may see low-flying choppers or drones over the coming months as Energex conducts aerial inspections of the power network. Area Manager Kevin Lavender said that inspection of the grid for any damage it may have sustained over the severe weather season, is carried out at this time every year. “Storms, high winds and other severe weather can damage the power network in places you can’t easily see from the ground, so we use helicopters and drones to take high-resolution images of poles, cross-arms and other electrical infrastructure from above,” Mr

Lavender said. “These photos of the network are then sent to our technicians, who look for any damage on the top of the grid and then organise any repairs. “This is a much faster, safer and efficient way of inspecting South East Queensland’s power network, allowing us to prepare and maintain a safe and reliable electricity supply for the year ahead.” The helicopters will be

primarily seen on longer- and harder-to-access sections of the power network, working at low-levels in rural areas and at 300 metres in urban areas. The drones will be operating in more residential and urban areas and are very quiet. Energex’s chopper contractors will contact livestock owners, who have asked to be advised of flight times and dates, in order to prepare or move animals that may be distressed. Anyone with livestock that may be troubled by the aircraft, can contact the flight team on 0410 221 884 to find out when helicopters will be near their property.

Spencer’s great-grandaughter, Linda Sivyer, said that the event on March 12, is open to all of Spencer’s descendants. “It is an opportunity for our family to come together, to have lunch and catch up, and later visit Spencer’s grave at the Cooroy Cemetery or visit the land that Spencer selected in Tinbeerwah in 1891.” Noosa Mayor, Clare Stewart, and Member for Noosa, State MP Sandy Bolton, are expected to be at the event.

Population growth WHILE the Australian Bureau of Statistics is still assessing the numbers from the most recent census, the data analysis site, CityFacts, has estimated the total population of Cooroy, Pomona and surrounds to be almost 11,000 people. Projecting the current population growth patterns forward, Cooroy will be a town of 5174 in 2040, while Pomona will house 4033 people in that same year. City-Facts lists our current populations as follows: Cooroy 3915, Cooroy Mountain 179, Pomona 3066, Cooran 1620, Kin Kin 732 and Black Mountain 1463. Across the Hinterland, the median age is above the Queensland median of 37.6 years. At Cooroy the median age is 45.6, while Pomona has a median of 43.8. Cooran has a slightly younger population, with a median age of 42.7 years whilst Kin Kin's median age is 45.2. Check out further statistics at: www.city-facts.com

Pomona Church, pictured over the years, is about to celebrate turning 100.

Centenary celebrations about to start for historic Pomona Church POMONA’S St Patrick’s Church is celebrating 100 years. In Pomona on Saturday 26 March, the Noosa District Catholic Parish is inviting all to celebrate, with the parish community, the first 100 years of St Patrick’s Church. The church was built in 1921-1922 on a site donated by Vince Bazzo. The timber was donated and cut by Arthur Bull, and Paddy Dwyer gave the timber for the altar. Before the church, mass was held in the Show Hall and later, by Father Wright in the Majestic Hall. The finished church cost about 900 pounds and was quite a large building, being 28 feet wide and over 40 feet long. The church was opened on 26 March 1922, and on this day, the twin daughters of Mr and Mrs Jack Bazzo, Lena and Ella, were baptised by Father Wright. This was the first ceremony in the new church. The first marriage, solemnised by Father Wright, was between Fred Woods and Molly Tierney.

In 1937, extensions were made to the front and rear of the church, and the sanctuary and sacristy accommodation were improved. The old debt had just been cleared and the additions cost nearly 300 pounds. This debt was liquidated in 1943. The church was closed at one point in the 1970s and in 1983, as the new Parish Priest, Father Basil Meaney re-opened Pomona Church for the celebration of Mass. In 2012, restoration work was done to repair and

restore the church. The centenary celebration on 26 March will begin at 12.30 pm for a 1 pm start, with light refreshments followed by onsite entertainment and historical displays. Celebrations will conclude with Mass starting at 4 pm, with Archbishop Mark Coleridge presiding. To assist with catering and seating, bookings are essential. A novel idea for a quirky letterbox has launched a new business - Fun Farmies.

Business born from a cow letterbox WHAT started as a comment about a cow letterbox has grown into a fledgling business. Jen from Fun Farmies said that it was back in May 2021, while having a “glass or two of bubbles” with friends, when someone said that they wanted a cow letterbox for their property. “It got me thinking and as I had access to some timber I decided to give it a go.” Jen said she can’t draw but she can see what she wants to make in her mind. So, with a piece of timber and some rough sketches,

she cut, prepared, assembled and painted (umpteen times until she was happy with the end product), a letterbox that looked like a cow. “I’m a bit of a perfectionist and with the first letterbox turning out pretty darn well, I decided to do a post on Facebook Marketplace to dip my toe and see if there was any interest. “It's now eight months later and my creations are growing in colours, complexity and fun, going to new homes as far as NSW, Toowoomba, the Gold

and Sunny Coasts, and of course in and around the Hinterland.” Jen said she really enjoys the creative process and the challenge. “I welcome new ideas so I definitely hope to be able to expand ‘the herd’ further in the future. “‘From a little hobby, making practical pieces of art, Fun Farmies allows me to bring people's visions to light and smiles to their faces.” * To check out some of Jen’s Fun Farmies’ creations, visit https://www.facebook.com/FunFarmies-101874465588915

Cooroy Chamber of Commerce off to a solid start to 2022 THE year is off and running and our local business community are recharged and ready for whatever 2022 may present us with. It certainly has been an interesting and wet start to the year. We're hearing of more and more locals experiencing Covid-19 themselves and many businesses adapting to accommodate this impact on staff numbers. It would seem that this year will be more of the same regarding living with the virus and those businesses that are proactive, think outside the box and adapt the best will be the ones positioned to thrive the most. We can't start the year without reflecting on the magic that was Christmas In Cooroy in December last year, and thanking all who were involved in this free community event. The street party format was adopted for the second year in a row, after positive feedback was received the previous year, when Covid event restrictions required an adjustment to the usual format. Late night trading, closures of Maple and Emerald Street, food stalls and plenty of entertainment drew crowds that were the size we have seen in past years with the original format. The return of the Santa Race was a highlight for many, with crowds lining Maple Street to see all the action. Santa made an appearance himself and took many Christmas wishes while having photos taken. Every family who had their photo taken, received a show bag packed full of goodies from local businesses. Looks of amazement filled faces as they discovered all the treats inside. Along with the animal

farm, stilt walkers and jumping castle, Miss Donna was a favourite with the younger children and had the entire Cooroy Memorial Hall in stitches with her magical balloon show. The Butter Factory judges of the bike decorating competition had their work cut out for them picking winners from so many amazing entries. Wonderfully decorated bikes paraded along Maple Street as carolers filled the air with Christmas cheer. Before long, the time came for beloved local Helen Duncan, of Sconetime fame, to light the tree. And with the flick of a switch, the fabulous town decorations, including brand new street banners, were complete and the magic of Christmas was alive for all to see. Late night trading, entertainment and the ham wheel were popular with the adults, many of whom made a start on their Christmas shopping by supporting local businesses. The Butter Factory Christmas Party was a hive of activity with live music,

food, stalls and the great throwdown. The night was a huge success due to contributions and involvement of individual businesses, stall holders, food stalls, local police, SES volunteers, entertainers, Rotary, the Cooroy Chamber Executive, Noosa Council and the Butter Factory. We can't thank everyone enough for their support of the event. This free community initiative by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce continues to be a favourite on our community's social calendar. With the positive feedback received from local businesses who took part and all who attended, the event is set to be a bigger, better and an even more magical feature in the festive season for this year. COVID-19 Community Update

COLLABORATION TACKLES COVID CHALLENGES It’s a risk management strategy that has been well received by Noosa business and community groups. Securing a rapid antigen test during January was a bit like a game of snap, but thanks to a proactive partnership between Council and Noosa company Respond Global, supplies of the scarce kits have found their way to local business operators and health care providers. “It has helped us massively,” Dave Langdon, owner of Aspire Property said. “The tests really allowed us to continue to operate, which in turn means we’ve saved a whole lot of people visiting Noosa from having to find alternative accommodation,” he said. “That could have been catastrophic at the height of the tourist season.” Mr Langdon commended Council and Respond Global for their proactive, timely approach to the ongoing crisis. An opinion echoed by Black Ant Café owner Jodie Williams. “You can’t control what staff do outside business hours, but having access to these kits certainly helped me manage the situation and ensure none of our customers were exposed to any risk,” she said.

Ten of her staff tested positive in mid-January over the course of 10 days. While she managed to keep the doors of her Kin Kin café open, The RATs safeguarded her staff and customers and allowed her to adapt to keep operating. Nearly 80 businesses and providers have benefitted from the partnership. Respond Global has distributed the limited supply of RAT kits to cafes, restaurants, health care providers, accommodation businesses and many more. Dr Ian Norton, Owner of Respond Global and his staff also prepared a series of documents and videos to help reduce the confusion around managing COVID in the workplace. Economic Development Manager Anthony Dow praised Dr Ian Norton and the team at Respond Global for their decisiveness and willingness to help. “It’s a gold medal example of collaboration to help our community,” he said. “Respond Global had the knowhow and access, we simply facilitated the discussion and mechanism to make it a reality,” he said. “The business operators

embraced the process and have used rapid testing to safeguard their staff and customers. It has made a tangible difference

and another example of Noosa working together to overcome national challenges to remain open,” Mr Dow said.

MESSAGE TO OUR COMMUNITY

From Kerri Contini - Chair of Council’s COVID taskforce It’s now been two years since Covid-19 was first detected in Australia and we appreciate there is a lot of uncertainty and frustration at the ongoing impacts on our lives. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH STAFF HELP BUSINESSES NAVIGATE PANDEMIC With local COVID cases expected to surpass 5000 as the pandemic peaks in coming weeks, Council’s Environmental Health Officers are working closely with businesses to help keep staff and customers safe while limiting COVID’s impact on the local workforce.

The emphasis is on assisting businesses, answering any questions they have, rather

than enforcing compliance as most are doing their best to follow the state’s directives. Our job is to help them fine-tune the measures they have put in place. “While we have had a few complaints about staff in some businesses not wearing masks, generally across all of our local businesses compliance is very good.”

and council for their ongoing support of the vaccination rollout in Noosa.

It replaces the Noosa Leisure Centre, which has been the vaccination hub for the past five weeks.

“The Noosa Leisure Centre has been a great central location and we appreciate the efforts of the helpful staff. We appreciate Council offering The J as a venue so we can continue the vaccination and booster rollout in Noosa,” Ms Adcock said

Health staff have administered more than 6000 doses at the hub since its opening. Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service COVID prevention lead Karen Adcock thanked Mayor Clare Stewart

Human spirit has been at the forefront of the latest Covid crisis where Noosa Council has worked with health, aged care, disability services to keep vulnerable members of Noosa safe. Key local services including NoosaCare, Maple Street Surgery, and Sunshine Butterflies have worked with council to navigate the crisis.

Environmental Health Coordinator Sunil Kushor said high-risk businesses were the main focus, with Council’s Environmental Health Officers providing guidance on matters such as mask use and vaccination check-in compliance. “Areas where lots of people are gathering at any given time, such as cafes and restaurants, are a major focus for our staff,” he said.

Health care steps up to help vulnerable

“Vaccination is a really important way to protect ourselves against COVID-19 so I encourage the community to

take advantage of the hub at The J Noosa.” The vaccination clinic will operate seven days 9am to 4.30pm. Walk-ins are accepted for both children aged 5-11 and adults. “Thanks to Noosa Council, we were connected to Respond Global who were able to allocate Sunshine Butterflies and other community groups some RAT tests so we could safely bring our support staff back to work to care for our members,” she said. “We were very grateful to be able to get some RAT tests during this extremely difficult time.” Sunshine Butterflies CEO and founder Leanne Walsh said operating as a disability support service and charity during the pandemic has been a challenge. “We are providing care for some of the most vulnerable members of our community so we have been cautious,” she said. “We are grateful for our incredible staff and volunteers who are doing their very best to keep our members living with disability safe and happy. NoosaCare CEO Megan D’Elton said the response from Council and Respond Global has been outstanding: “We have not received any Government stock and if Respond Global hasn’t helped, we would not have had the RAT tests to test all of our staff.” D’Elton said NoosaCare is testing its staff every three days at one site and weekly at the other site, to control the stock use. “These kits have reduced the amount of time employees would otherwise be unable to attend work if undergoing precautionary (PCR) testing. Exhibition explores the price of women pursuing an ideal WHAT: “Objectify” Exhibition WHEN: 5 February to 3 March WHERE: Pomona Railway Station Gallery, 10 Station Street, Pomona

Working for Noosa Communities

COST: Free

THE often fraught relationship between women and their bodies is the subject matter of an exhibition at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery. North Arm artist, Tracy Muche-Williams, said “Objectify” represents the restrictions and rules that society places on women’s lives and bodies, using images of corseted women from 1800s’ fashion plates. “Western society holds appearance and image as increasingly more important than our inner self. “Representations of idealised images can create a distressing gap between the reality of who we are and who we want to be,” Tracy said. Using assemblage, collage

and lithography, the exhibition explores ways for women to let go of these illusory selves in order to accept their own true selves. “Objectify” is on show at the Pomona Railway Station

Gallery from 5 February to 3 March. The Gallery at 10 Station Street Pomona, is open 10am-4pm Tuesday to Friday, and 10am-2pm Saturday and Sunday.

Sewing up a storm for kids THE Cooroy and the Palm Lake ladies are uniting to aid children in need in Tonga. Uniforms 4 Kids is a charity that repurposes used Police, Border Force, Emergency Services, Flying Doctors and other service uniforms, by making them into clothing for children in need. Currently, we are sewing Australian Federal Police Uniforms to assist the desperate situation in Tonga. Hopefully, the Federal Police will be able to distribute these in the very near future. We have made over 800 items just this month! A mammoth task. Well done ladies! As a matter of interest, since we started in Cooroy, we have made just over 15,500 items of clothing. Last year alone we sewed 4,500 items. Of course, Cooroy is just one of the many groups that we have throughout Australia. We would love some help with our endeavors. Many, many used uniforms go into landfill each and every day.

The materials are still in good condition and make excellent clothes. Besides doing so much good for the communities, we all have a wonderful time, a sense of achievement, a new purpose and have made so many new friends. Can you help us?

The Cooroy group meets every Friday morning at the Uniting Church in Maple St. (opposite Eden Hospital). Come and have a cuppa with us and see what we do. See what you can do! Further information call Yvonne 0413 133 791 or Jenny 07 5355 5039.

Rotary launches flood appeal for neighbouring regions ROTARY Club of Cooroy, in liaison with Rotary Club of Noosa Heads and Rotary Club of Maryborough-Sunrise, has established an appeal for donations for flood-affected residents in the Fraser Coast Region. The floods were one of the most devastating in recent years, forcing many residents in Maryborough and the surrounding communities of Bauple, Glenwood, Gundiah, Tiaro, Booubyjan, Goomeri, Gunalda, Kilkivan, Miva, Tansey, Theebine and Woolooga to leave everything and flee to safety. Rotary Club of Cooroy President, David Bell, said that dozens of residents were evacuated with no time to gather their possessions, as floodwaters inundated their homes. “Our Club has already committed some of the funds

raised at our BBQs and events to assist those in need and we encourage everyone to help as much as they can.” Every dollar donated to the flood appeal will go directly to the beneficiaries, with no administration charges, no fees, and no deductions. Federal Member for Wide Bay, Llew O’Brien said that while the Australian and Queensland Governments have a range of disaster relief payments available to assist people who are impacted by the floods, additional support raised through community service organisations like Rotary is always welcome. “Ex-tropical cyclone Seth hit parts of Wide Bay hard. I commend the combined efforts of the volunteers at Noosa Rotary Club and Maryborough Sunrise Rotary Club who are extending

a helping hand to help people recover. “Their generosity demonstrates the strong spirit, resilience and neighbourly care shared between Wide Bay communities.” Anyone who would like to donate to the flood appeal can do so via EFT to Rotary Club of Noosa Heads at Bendigo Bank, BSB: 633-000, account: 135 570 869, reference: FLOOD APPEAL. Cooroy Rotary brings together local people for tackling the humanitarian challenges, helping families in need in our own communities and impacting lives of all ages and backgrounds at the local, state, national and international levels. Ground broken on Permaculture Noosa’s Pavilion

AFTER two years of fundraising and chasing grants, the dream of the Permaculture Noosa Pavilion is one big step closer to being realised. The ground has been broken and the plumbing has been laid in the Cooroy Community Gardens, next to the Badminton Court. This will be a place for growing, cooking and learning about food. With a commercial kitchen, the public will be able to access the foods from the gardens and prepare meals on-site. The initiative brings the community into the kitchen where new recipes and new ingredients can be learnt. President of Permaculture Noosa and Noosa Councillor, Tom Wegener (pictured), said that this will be a big step toward re-igniting local food production and food resilience. “I believe there is a bright future for local agriculture in growing the healthiest food in the world.” He calls the idea the “Olympic Garden,” where Noosa will win gold with healthiest and tastiest produce. This is a credit to the persistence of the Permaculture Noosa team and their dedication to sharing agri-knowledge.

Hudson awarded best writer in Year 6 for 2021 A COOROY State School student has been awarded the Laraine Mahoney Writers Award for 2021. Year 6 student, Hudson Barrett, received the “Best Writer” Award, donated by Cooroy-Noosa Genealogical and Historical Research Group in association with the Cooroy Book Club and the Cooroy State School. The award includes $100 in prize money and a trophy. The “Best Writer” Award was introduced in memory of Laraine Mahoney, a teacher at Cooroy School and advocate for literacy, who sadly passed away in 2018. The award is given annually to the “Best Writer in Year 6”. Hudson loves playing cricket, recently making his first 50 runs, and is a keen scholar who has won a number of awards including the Community Spirit Award. He is interested in conservation and has even written a small book about endangered animals.

Short stay laws, bridge work, and Kin Kin Hall on track WELL 2022 has all at Council being full steam ahead. Noosa’s new short stay local law comes into effect on 1 February 2022. The new law is aimed at managing the impact of short-stay properties on residential amenities. It will help protect guests by introducing minimum safety standards, which property owners will need to meet, and importantly it will help to ensure short-stay property owners are being good neighbours and dealing with issues as they arise. Significantly Council has established a 24-hour complaints hotline, and will trial the use of a security firm to monitor problem properties. Regarding good news, the Tablelands Road Bridge B replacement project at Cooran is now complete. The Tablelands Road Bridge provides vital access for residents, boutique accommodation, users of

the Noosa Trail Network, and visitors to the James M McKane Memorial Lookout. The new single lane bridge, which is wider, safer and stronger than the old one, opened to the community in January, following a 13-week construction period. It has a 100-year design life and meets all current bridge standards. Work has now started on the Wahpunga Lane Bridge replacement project at Kin Kin. Demolition of the old bridge has now finished, with construction of the new bridge starting. The bridge is expected to take four months to complete, weather and construction conditions permitting. Both the Tablelands Road and Wahpunga Lane Bridges will remain single lane, based on detailed cost-benefit analysis of existing traffic volumes, growth factors, existing line of sight, heavy

vehicle and accident history. These two bridges deliver a $4 million investment into the Hinterland community and are part of a comprehensive bridge refurbishment and replacement program jointly funded by the Australian Government and Council as part of the Bridge Renewal Program. In more good news, cleaning and disinfecting work at the Kin Kin Recreational Hall has finished. It means the public health order imposed on the building can be lifted and the site prepared for building remediation work. Work is expected to continue for approximately four months, depending on weather and construction conditions. Once work is complete the hall can be reopened to the community.

Until next month, stay safe,

Clare

Healthcare in the spotlight IT is hard to believe that we are already into February and it’s been a difficult start to the year for many families and businesses in Noosa as we continue to manage the impact of Covid-19. Last week, Minister for Regional Health Dr David Gillespie and I visited Cooroy Medical Practice and Cooroy’s LiveLife Pharmacy, where we listened to staff and gained an understanding of local medical issues. Dr Gillespie and I will continue to work together to ensure people in the Noosa region can access quality, affordable medical care and advice. In January, Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce was in Noosa and together we announced a $1.5 million expansion to the muchloved Katie Rose Cottage Hospice in Doonan. The funding will be used to increase the number of bedrooms from three to five, enabling more than 20 additional people to be accommodated every year. A second lounge room, John Taylor Your Denture Expert

an administrative area and storage room will also be added, and I commend the staff and volunteers at Katie Rose Cottage who provide high-quality compassionate palliative care. There was also some good news for everyone at Sunshine Butterflies disability support service at Cooroibah, which is receiving a $135,000 boost through the Coalition Government’s Building Better Regions Fund to construct a new café, an accessible playground and a stage roof. Sunshine Butterflies has grown to become not just one of the region’s largest employers, but a an incredibly important community resource, and I congratulate

them on their success. Volunteers help give Noosa its vibrancy, creativeness and warmth, and the Coalition Government’s Volunteer Grants Program is supporting their work with $2,530 for the Cooroy Golf Club for maintenance equipment and a first-aid kit; $5,000 for Noosa Arts and Crafts for a new laptop, software, and an ergonomic chair; and $4,998 for PTSD Dogs Australia to provide training for their team. Thank you to the staff and volunteers of all these organisations, and to everyone who contributes towards making Noosa such a wonderful place to live and visit.

Welcome DR PETER STOBBS STARTING IN FEBRUARY

Look in the mirror and ask yourself these questions? 1. Are you putting up with old ill-fitting dentures? 2. Do others notice you have dentures? 3. Does your face look older, or appear sunken in? 4. Are your lips disappearing? You can look natural with dentures: Denture treatment can go a long way in restoring a natural look, as well as improving your ability to chew properly. Well-made and accurately fitting dentures will boost your selfconfidence by restoring your facial muscles. This will help you speak better and improve your chewing of most foods. Current techniques produce truly natural looking dentures. Annual check-up: As dentures depend on the health of the gums that support them, it is important to have your mouth assessed regularly to ensure that your dentures still work properly and effectively.

For those with sensitive gums, or when a substantial amount of gum has receded, there are techniques and options that can enhance comfort and help maximise the remaining gum. If you are about to lose teeth: Or, if your existing denture is more than 5 years old, phone for an appointment. You may consult John Taylor without referral. You are Unique: When you visit John Taylor for your free denture assessment, he will clearly explain the conditions that exist in your mouth and outline the best technique or approach for maximising the experience by taking your individual characteristics into account. Your concerns will be listened to and your questions answered. Options: John Taylor is your denture expert and will recommend a solution that best meets your needs. A reline, precision denture or an implant supported denture may be the answer. John has been providing trusted advice and quality precision fitting dentures in the Noosa area for over 40 years.

Good news on road resurfacing THE Palaszczuk GovernAs we head into 2022, I would like to thank all my constituents for their patience and hard work as we collectively deal with the ongoing effects of the pandemic. Residents along the Eumundi- Kenilworth Rd can look forward to a smoother ride home thanks to the Palaszczuk Labor Government investing $2.9 Million for resurfacing and rehabilitation works. The works will improve the quality of a 2.7 kilometre stretch of the road, and will be carried out in two stages, beginning in late January 2022 with Stage Two beginning in early May 2022, weather and construction conditions permitting. This builds on the $5.7 Million that we’ve invested in the road since 2019 as part of the state’s sixth record road and transport plan that is coming in at $27.5 billion over the next four years.

Round 6 of the popular Fairplay Vouchers are now open for applications. The program supports eligible Queensland parents and carers with a $150 voucher towards the cost of sports registration for kids aged between 5-17. You can apply if your child is: a Queensland resident aged from 5 to 17 years (inclusive) at the time of application; and the holder, or whose parent, carer or guardian is the holder of a valid Department of Human Services Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card with the child’s name on it. Contact my office for more information.

A

NEW Year brings with it a new focus, especially with COVID-19 now firmly living among us. The Queensland government is no longer focusing on where a person has come from, but rather upon restrictions within QLD to minimise risk. This requires an adjustment in how we think and behave. This especially includes that there will no longer being contact tracing or listing of exposure sites because as we have seen, all places have become exposure sites due to the swift spread of COVID-19. The reality is the risk is in every space, and our role is to minimise catching and sharing COVID-19 as best we can. The Christmas break that wasn’t a ‘break’, demonstrated that regardless of efforts to predict, prepare for and prevent impacts from government decisions outside of our control, there are always unwelcome challenges. This included our testers dropping from heatstroke (that led to closures of testing sites), or youngsters rampaging over three nights, terrorising locals and visitors alike. Daily we sought solutions and extra resources, and I am thankful to many including state departments, testing site managers and Noosa Council staff who answered my calls over the break, even on Christmas Day!! Although in letters and speeches months prior, I had raised many concerns about possible impacts over the holiday period due to new rules

and the influx of visitors, as well the need for RATs, the reality brought forward new questions including who is actually making these determinations. I certainly look forward to Parliament restarting! Having recently contracted COVID ourselves, despite being double vaxxed (and no, no booster as not eligible yet!) and being ‘pandemic pedantic’ in our hand washing, masks, distancing and contact with others, Shoey and I have a couple of tips. First and foremost, regardless of vaccination status, you can catch and spread, though those vaccinated reportedly have lesser symptoms and a lower viral load when positive. So please, to minimise risk when visiting our vulnerable loved ones, even if you have no symptoms, do a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT), when they become more available As well, add to your ‘kit’ a small can of sanitising spray or wipes to use on surfaces when out and about! Secondly, be prepared! Even though the majority with whom I have spoken, contract only a mild dose, this was not our experience and after some very rough symptoms, it was 14 days before we had a negative result. Having experienced, as others, the impossible task in accessing RATs, food and other necessities whilst isolating, we were able to use our experience and those of all who contacted me, for further recommendations to the Premier and CHO including that National Cabinet discuss a ‘care package’. Consisting

of RATs, paracetamol and other basics needed for self-care whilst isolating, such a package would assist enormously in reducing risk of further transmission in the community. For those without family or friends to assist when in isolation, please call the Care Army on 1800 173 349. Information on how to be ‘COVID ready’ is also available via a search for COVID ready on the www.qld.gov.au website. Also my latest advocacy to the Premier included the need for financial support for businesses impacted through a variety of avenues and for communications from governments to be simplified in order to require less need for ‘interpretation’ of the many changes to public health directions. With swiftly changing restrictions and rules, adding to the confusion and the commentary and ‘blame game’ being played, remember we were advised at the very start that this virus is ‘novel’ meaning ‘new’. With no template to operate from, governments globally have had to adjust according to new information, data and variants. All can learn much from this pandemic and the respective responses so far, and this is what must now be the focus as we continue on this journey with a very unwanted ‘passenger’. Until next time, Happy New Year! Don’t forget your resolutions, be ‘COVID Ready’, and remember the importance of expressing gratitude for where we live, and with whom we live! Sandy

Pomona Junior AFL Club sign on day

Clinton’s swim challenge to raise money for charity POMONA is home to a special sporting club affectionately known as the Pomona Demons. The Club prides itself on its family-friendly and welcoming environment and unwavering commitment to Junior footy. And this month, the Club is holding a sign on day on 12 February at the Pomona AFL grounds. The Demons have big aspirations for the 2022 season with competitive teams registered across all

age groups (U6-U14) including Under 15 Girls. If you are new to the area or you always wanted to play AFL then please come and meet the Club. The Club has produced talented young players for the past 20 years. Just recently, several players representing Noosa District in U12 and U14 and three of our U14 girls made the Brisbane Lions Academy. The oval is located at the foot of Cooroora Mountain and is arguably the most

idyllic oval in Queensland, if not Australia. The Club was born in 1973 where its first home was the Pomona Show Grounds oval. However, in 1977 the Club moved to the current site on Reserve Road, repurposing the Pomona School’s domestic science building as a clubhouse. The Club survives and thrives through the determined attitude of our Players and Committee, the passionate and never-say-

die culture in the club; and for the inherent love of ‘the game’. Club President, Matthew Conquest is all these things and friendliest guy you will ever meet to boot. The Demons are a small club that needs community support, whether that be in the form of new players, volunteers, supporters or financial sponsorship so grab at coffee at the Pomona Markets and pop down to say ‘Hi’. You can even try out the stationary hot air balloon!

COOROY’S Super Fish, Clinton Stanley, is raising much-needed funds for sick kids. Clinton is participating in the Starlight Super Swim Challenge, to raise money for The Starlight Foundation. Clinton said that he is going to swim as far as he can in the month of February. “My challenge is to swim at least 50 kilometres. “We’ve all recently experienced periods of uncertainty and social isolation, and children and families who manage serious illness, face this every day. “I am going to fundraise to bring happiness to sick kids when it matters most, and it would mean so much to me and The Starlight Foundation if you’d support me in this challenge.” If you would like to support Clinton in his swim challenge, please go to: https://superswim.org.au/clinton “I am swimming under the umbrella of Noosa Masters Swimming Club, where I have been a member for 19 years. “All donations over $2 are tax-deductible and you will be given a receipt for your donation.”

AS we take a deep breath at the start of a new year it’s a good time to reflect on how incredibly fast and vibrant the property market was in 2021 and what’s ahead for 2022. Record prices and a massive demand for property on the Sunshine Coast was seen last year. Independent property researchers, SQM, released the Housing Boom and Bust Report 2022, late last year. Head researcher, Louis Christopher, forecasts that dwelling prices across the nation will drop in the second half of this year, most likely as a result of further intervention by the APRA banking regulator. However, it seems the Sunshine State will top the national real estate market. The area is expected to increase in value growth by 8 to 14 percent, a slower rate of increase than last year, yet still healthy. “And the reason why we say that is for two specific factors: firstly, Brisbane and Qld regions’ house prices, while being overvalued by our measurements, are nowhere near as extremely overvalued as Sydney and Melbourne at this point; and secondly, we’re expect-

On-trend flooring and neutral colour tones are on show throughout, with feature windows and glass sliding doors that allow the views to shine. Your gourmet kitchen will make cooking a pleasure, with an oversized island bench and quality stainless steel appliances along with a butler’s pantry. You will love showing off your culinary skills in this chic chef’s haven, as guests gather at the breakfast bar or relax in the open-plan dining area. The large

ing ongoing migration outflows from Victoria and, to a lesser extent, New South Wales, into Queensland, and that will create an increase in underlying demand”, said Mr Christopher in his report. Locally we will likely see our market go from hot to warm this year. With a large proportion of our buyers historically relying less on borrowings, and therefore impacted less by interest rate rises, the commentary for what may happen nationally is less likely to apply to our market. Certainly, with the volume of buyers we still have ready to purchase the homes on the market, we don’t see a crash nor a reduction in prices any time soon. The increases in values we have experienced over the last 2 years are not sustainable so a change will occur as this seller’s market becomes more balanced. However we see this will result in a flattening of prices, rather than a drop, possibly late this year or sometime next year. It seems things aren’t going to slow down too soon for the Sunshine Coast or our fabulous Noosa Hinterland property market!
