nbn turns on at Pomona and Cooran FEDERAL Member for Wide Bay, Llew O’Brien today said premises in the hinterland communities of Pomona and Cooran are now able to access faster and more reliable nbn internet access. The nbn was activated at Pomona and Cooran last month, enabling 1,100 premises access to superfast nbn broadband, opening up a range of new opportunities for business, students, and local residents. “High-speed broadband enables more opportunities for commerce and people to connect, and the nbn will deliver new economic and social benefits to residents in these communities,” Mr O’Brian said. “Small business will be more productive as the nbn enables access to new online services like cloudbased accounting software. Students will be able to participate in new learning experiences, and mums and dads will be able to take care of everyday tasks including accessing services or paying bills quickly and easily online.” The Liberal Nationals Coalition Government is rolling out high-speed broadband across Australia in the fastest and most affordable way, with every home and business in Australia able to connect to the nbn by 2020. “More than 70,000 homes and businesses across Australia are signing up to the nbn every single month, and there are already over 8,800 premises in Wide Bay experiencing the benefits of the nbn,” Mr O’Brien said. Residents and businesses will be able to sign up to an nbn plan with their chosen retail service provider. A range of plans with various download quotas and speed tiers are available to suit consumer and business needs. More information on how to connect to the nbn is available at www.nbnco.com.au

Weeding out vines

The Australian Body Art Festival is a new event for Cooroy this year just before Easter on the weekend of 8th & 9th April. There is still room for more artists to take part, a couple of spots left for photographers and spaces for market stalls and food stalls. If you fit any of these categories and want to be involved in something big for Cooroy, go to australianbodyart.com.au to get more information and links to entry.

CATS Claw Creeper and Madeira vine are being hunted out in the Kin Kin Catchment as part of the ‘Keep it in Kin Kin’ project. Noosa and District Landcare Group staff and Noosa Council’s Pest Officer Ken English have been scouring the lower Kin Kin Catchment for the nasty weeds over the last two months. “We call these vines ‘transformer vines’ in so far as they can smother and kill otherwise healthy forest,” said Steve Husband, Noosa Landcare’s Projects Manager. “Within the Kin Kin catchment we think we have a chance to bring the vines under control and in particular keep our riparian vegetation intact. “We have spent several days in the field surveying over 120 hectares of creek line vegetation to assess the extent of vine weeds in the lower Kin Kin Catchment. Between Wahpunga Park and the Great Sandy National Park at Elanda we found 92 small infestations. I am really glad to say all of these were mapped and have

since been treated by Noosa Landcare Conservation Services Contracting Crews. This is a great outcome,” Mr Husband said. Further surveys over the coming months are planned for the remainder of the Kin Kin catchment. Project partners Noosa Council, Healthy Waterways and Catchments, Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation and Noosa Landcare will then be able to plan for future vine weed control in the catchment. Mr Husband said Mature Cats Claw Creeper vines were just completing their flower, with some bright yellow bell shaped flowers quite visible. “If you believe you have Cats Claw Creeper on your property and you are in the Noosa Catchment, please contact Noosa Landcare on (07) 5485 2468 for further information,” he said. New Year is here again, along with the usual political fights, And the usual political confusion between responsibilities and rights. The economy is getting flogged, the budget is on a slide, While the pollies are on holidays, scattered far and wide. The problems that await them, seem to have no end, It will be interesting to see what they hopefully recommend. Business is getting itchy, a few are biting the dust, They fear that they are losing, the public and political trust. Apart from global warming, the economy, and defence, To fix those will surely try the pollies’ common sense. Of course, there’s education, that’s going to be a worry, Parliament will hand out a few million, that usually shuts them up in a hurry. All in all it must be admitted, legislation is in a mess, Everything seems to be left to God, and a hope for a lucky guess. So it looks like another season, of Humpty Dumpty and Co., Maybe, they’ll call Donald Trump and see if he’ll have a bit of a go!!

BOUQUET: My husband and I had a number of documents that required witnessing during the holidays. It is hard to find a solicitor or JP during the holidays. We were lucky to be able to attend Cooroy Library where we found a friendly and welcoming volunteer in Joy, a JP who gives up her time to witness documents for people like us. BOUQUET: Today I returned to my car after two and half hours, to find some lovely ladies trying to catch a chicken under my car. One of my hens had hitched a ride from Black Mountain, into town under the tray of my ute and held on! So to Deb from Cudgerie, the lady in the black jeep and the lovely volunteer from Bloomhill - a huge thank you. Your kindness towards a lost animal was very much appreciated. BOUQUET to Sgt Mal Scott who was injured in the line of duty. We hope you get well soon. BOUQUET to the workers who manned the businesses over the holidays with a smile on their faces while many of us were on holidays. We hope you get your turn next year. Australia Day, one of the great days of the year is fast approaching. It reminded me once again of the Great Australian dream...to own your own home! Helping people on the road to that dream is one of the most enjoyable parts of a bank manager’s job. Like the pursuit of any big dream, there’s some work involved and some processes to follow in setting up your home loan. You will need to have saved a certain amount of your own funds as a deposit - which is usually a minimum of 5% of the purchase price. There are also other costs to allow for, such as the loan set up costs, stamp duty for the purchase as well as your own solicitors charges and search fees. Having the deposit is the first big step in the process. You also need to fit the criteria of the lender’s policy for such things as job stability and capacity to repay the loan. These things will all be taken in to account during the assessment period. The assessment process may vary from bank to bank and depend upon what type of loan you’re applying for. For example at Bendigo Bank your local manager will have their own lending authority to approve most credit cards, personal Loans, home loans and small business loans. It’s always a good idea to get to know the staff at your local and the manager in particular. With all the electronic means of banking in this day and age, ATM’s, internet, phone banking, direct credit and debits, not all customers regularly visit their branch and getting to know each other can be difficult. A bank will need to use letters, emails or phone calls to stay in touch with customers they usually don’t see. Nothing is more reassuring during any application process than feeling confident in the representative guiding you through it. So, if you have that Great Australian Dream as we approach our special national day, please call

in or contact me on 5447 7131 or geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

Take good care of your credit record Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* MANY people don’t understand how credit ratings work and the impact they can have when borrowing. A shaky history of paying bills on time or skipping a few debt repayments may seem like minor issues, but money habits from the past can come back to haunt us. Some Australians can save for years to grow a home deposit only to be knocked back for a loan because of a bad credit rating. The trouble is, plenty of people are in the dark about how credit ratings work and the impact they can have. Whenever you apply for a loan, credit card or even a new utilities connection, the lender or service provider will check out your credit history. It’s a record that shows how well you have managed debt in the past - in fact, you’ll have a credit file if you’ve applied for a loan, store card, or even a mobile phone plan in the last five years. These records are kept by credit bureaus like Dun & Bradstreet and Veda, and your financial history is used to develop a personal credit score, which

gives lenders an idea of the sort of risk you represent as a borrower. According to research by comparison site Finder, one in four Australians worry their credit score could stop them getting a loan. And yes, it could. But here’s the rub. Credit scores take into account years of past behaviour, and overdue debts that may seem long forgotten can stay on your credit file for up to seven years. Having a tarnished credit record can be costly. It may mean the only lenders willing to take you on are those that deal with high-risk borrowers in return for higher than normal interest charges. That’s why it pays to take good care of your credit record. The easiest way to do this is by paying bills and debt repayments on time, every time. If you can’t make a repayment, get in touch with your lender to explain the situation. Early action can minimise the fallout on your credit record. There is another good reason to keep tabs on your credit record. Each time an application for credit is made in your name it will appear your file, so it

can alert you to any fraudulent loan applications made using your personal identity. To know how your credit history rates, take a look at Finder’s free credit score check -https:// www.finder.com.au/creditscore , or request a full copy of your credit report by heading to Veda’s website - http:// www.veda.com.au/. Consumers are entitled to one free report annually. If you would like to dis-

cuss please contact us on 07 5447 7740. Digital rates notices on the rise 5,000 (or 16%) of Noosa’s 31,000 ratepayers will this year receive their rates notices via email. That is a 250 % increase from January 2016. Rates notices went out yesterday (Tuesday January 17) and payment is due by Friday February 17 to ensure the early payment discount is received. Noosa Council’s Rates and Revenue Services Manager Kellie Seeleither commented: “We are seeing more people electing to receive their rates notices via email. “This is good because it saves Council, and therefore the community, on postage charges, in addition to being better for the environment by reducing paper and printing usage.

Now OPEN at NOOSA CIVIC

“However, we do understand that some ratepayers prefer to receive a physical rate notice in the mail. “Others have just not got around to contacting Council to have it emailed yet. “We also have multiple options for payment to make it as convenient as possible for people to pay their rates on time. These include: Bpay, online via Council’s website, over the phone on the number provided on the notice, by direct debit, at Australia Post offices and at Council’s office - either in person or by mail.” To find out how to receive your rates notice via email, please visit http:// www.noosa.qld.gov.au/rate-notice-viaemail or call Council on 5329 6500.

Common recycling misconceptions revealed NOOSA Council discovered a number of common recycling misconceptions at the recycling workshops it held during National Recycling Week. “More than 420 residents attended workshops and information sessions held throughout Noosa during Recycling Week,” said Noosa Councillor Joe Jurisevic. “It was encouraging to see so many people keen to learn more about recycling. “The workshops highlighted how many people are unaware of the number of everyday items that can be recycled in their yellow-lidded recycle bin,” Cr Jurisevic said. “As recycling techniques change, things that once weren’t recyclable, can now be recycled.”

Cr Jurisevic urged residents to download a copy of Council’s A-Z Guide to Recycling to keep upto-date on what can and can’t be recycled. Council’s Waste Education officer Emma Menzies said that aerosol cans topped the list of items people did not know could be recycled. “Many attendees were also not aware that pizza boxes, plastic take-away containers and tetra packs could be recycled. “They were also surprised that aluminium foil could be recycled. Ideally it should be clean and scrunched into a ball prior to disposing,” Ms Menzies said. For more information about ewaste and recycling, and to download the free AZ Guide to Recycling, visit Council’s website at www.noosa.qld.gov.au/waste-recycling.

Better chance of survival for injured wildlife “Council is delighted to see the outcome of this $4,778 project, funded by Council’s Community Projects Grants program,” Cr Stockwell said. “Wildcare volunteers provide a 24hr-service, seven days per week, rescuing injured wildlife, and rehabilitating thousands of native birds and animals each year, across South East Queensland. “The Release Aviary will significantly increase the chance of success when transitioning recovered wildlife back into their native, preferred habitat.” The purpose-designed aviary is attached to the top of a box trailer. It’s used to transport rehabilitated birds and animals into bushland areas, where the aviary is set-up and parked to enable the rehabilitated animal to adjust to its new surroundings. The Aviary will be used by Wildcare Australia, local Wilvos carers, local private carers and it will also assist in the release of animals cared for at the RSPCA Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. For more information about volunteering with Wildcare Australia please visit www.wildcare.org.au or call (07) 5527 2444. [L-R] Cathy Castellaro and Rachel Lyons from Wildcare Australia, with Cr Brian Stockwell, at the launch of the new Mobile Release Aviary. Birds, possums, gliders and other animals that have been nursed back to health following injury now stand a better chance of survival when released back into the local environment. It’s thanks to Wildcare Australia’s new Noosabased Mobile Release Aviary. Wildcare Australia’s Rachel Lyons and Noosa Councillor Brian Stockwell launched the mobile aviary in Pomona recently. Voluntary wildlife rehabilitators will use the aviary throughout Noosa Shire.

$250,000 boost for Six Mile flood projects Council has won a $250,000 grant from the Queensland Government to expand its Six Mile Creek Flood Study and equip the catchment with a flood monitoring system. Welcoming the news, Mayor Tony Wellington said Council would commission a more comprehensive study with the additional funding. “This will vastly improve our understanding of the Six Mile Creek catchment, guide future planning and land use decisions, and help us better predict and

manage flooding,” he said. The monitoring system will feed real-time data to Noosa’s Local Disaster Coordination Centre during emergencies, as well as provide information for the study. The Natural Disaster Resilience Program grant includes $83,996 toward the study and $165,600 toward the flood monitoring system. “Combined, these projects will help us better understand the behaviour, extent, velocity and depth of flood water in various

parts of the Six Mile Creek catchment,” the Mayor said. Council’s project manager Adam Britton said the additional funding would also allow Council to fill gaps in flood data for the catchment, which takes in areas of Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran, Kin Kin, Pinbarren and Lake Macdonald. The Six Mile Creek study will be the most detailed undertaken in the catchment. “There have been some smaller studies carried out

but they’re limited and need updating. This broader Six Mile Creek Flood Study will cover a much larger area,” Mr Britton added. The project will follow on from the soon to be completed Noosa River Flood Study upgrade for the Noosa River Catchment which extends from Kin Kin to Cooroibah, Noosaville and down to the river mouth. The Six Mile Creek Catchment projects are now out to tender. “I am delighted we are

able to deliver this project in partnership with the Queensland Government to help boost Noosa’s flood preparedness,” the Mayor said. The Six Mile Creek Catchment Flood Monitoring System and Six Mile Creek Flood Study Upgrade are joint initiatives of Noosa Shire Council and the Queensland Government. It follows Council’s successful recent flood mitigation projects at Pomona and Tewantin.

Can you knit or crochet? A local lady is urging Cooroy / Pomona district knitters and crocheting enthusiasts to help make a field of poppies for this year’s Anzac Day commemorations. Heather Ford said she was inspired to crochet and knit poppies for a 5000 Poppies campaign for this year’s ANZAC Day service after she saw that Melbourne had done this in 2015 for the centenary of the Gallipoli landing. Melbourne then

took their display to London for the Chelsea flower show where it was well received. “I thought it would be fitting to have our very own field of poppies for the RSL, we would love to represent the soldiers that died from this area” she said. “I wanted to open it up to the community, to invite the community to support the field of poppies, and be part of this very special project”, she said.

“The Only Family Owned Funeral Director in the Noosa Shire”

“Our aim is to make 400+ poppies to represent the soldiers this area lost in the wars. “You can knit or crochet them and place them in the marked in the Cooroy RSL. Mrs Ford said people could find patterns on the 5000 Poppies website or pick up a knitting or crochet pattern from the Cooroy RSL. “You can drop off finished poppies at Cooroy RSL – I am hoping we will be

inundated,” she said. Heather will collect them and attach them to hessian or camo nets to make a field of poppies. If you can’t knit or crochet, but would still like to be part of this wonderful project, you may wish to donate some RED, BLACK, PURPLE or GREEN wool for other people to make the poppies with. Wool donations can be left in the marked container at the Cooroy RSL.

BOLD as Love Jewellery are now in their third month of trading in Cooroy and Paul and Susan underwood have been overwhelming by the welcome they have received. “We have had a lovely welcome to the town and have been embraced by the local people of Cooroy and the surrounding hinterland. Time has flown and we have definitely been kept busy,” said Susan. “It has been very pleasing for us to have so many of our customers from Coolum follow us out here and many often enjoy a day of wandering the shops

or dining in the cafes while in Cooroy. “Thank you to everyone who shopped with us over the festive period and we hope there were many pleased faces on Christmas morning. It was a busy but lovely time for us being part of the Possum hunt, holding our Christmas Bon Bon promotion and our first Christmas in Cooroy as a business. “We have created some beautiful pieces in our new premises and it has been quite amazing to hear of so many people who have held onto their jewellery repairs until a jeweller came to town. “For those who do not know much about us, we have been manufacturing jewellery for 16 years and have recently relocated from Coolum Beach. “We take pride in manufacturing unique and/or classic designs and love to restore jewellery, giving it a new lease on life. “Remodelling is one of our specialties and a fantastic way of utilising gold pieces you already have and turning them into something new. This is also a lovely way of keeping the sentimental value of a piece that may either be too worn to wear or not to your liking in design, but has sentimental value to you personally. “We can take care of your jewellery repairs which you will often see Paul working away on at the bench or you may catch him gazing out our lovely big windows in between.” If you have an upcoming special occasion or it is time to spoil yourself, call in to see Paul or Susan to discuss your jewellery piece. They can take care of your jewellery creation right through, from the design to the manufacturing of the completed piece. Paul will design your jewellery to suit your personal style, from the very unique or intricate to the more classic pieces. Paul and Susan look forward to continuing to meet the people of Cooroy and surrounding areas and hope to see you in store soon. Phone 5446 1099.

Claptomaniacs return to Cooroy RSL

The Claptomaniacs (L to R): Jon May, Kenny Gamble, Alan Lander, David Zuric, Jon Brown FIVE-piece Noosa shire-based band The Claptomaniacs has been invited to make a return visit to Cooroy RSL on Saturday February 11, from 7pm. The band last played at the RSL in November, which proved to be a great night - so it’s time to do it all again. The Claptomaniacs specialise in covering classic material by the likes of Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton, Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Rolling Stones and more. The songs you will hear you will know, but not necessarily have heard them too often of late, so they will bring back memories.

Congratulations to Karl Doss and Kathryn Hoens on their engagement. Karl says he had planned to ask Kathryn as soon as they set up their gazebo on the beach on the Noosa North shore. “Unfortunately, our friend’s car was playing up and got stuck as soon as they got on the beach. After lots of pushing I managed to tow them off the beach. I returned and asked Kathryn for a New Year’s Day selfie on the dunes. Once we climbed to the top I dropped a knee pretending to get something out of my bag and popped the question instead. The rest is history.”

The performance will start with some slower ‘dinner’ material, then accelerate into a great night of expertly played dance classics, so be prepared lose some post-festive season kilos! The band has developed a top-drawer reputation across the Sunshine Coast for its high-quality covers, which will include classics like Cocker’s Unchain my Heart and You are so Beautiful, Cream’s Strange Brew, Clapton’s I shot the Sheriff, the Doobies’ Listen to the Music, and great Stones’ numbers like Brown Sugar and Honky Tonk Women. “Cooroy RSL is a great venue for us to play,” drummer and Lake Macdonald resident Alan Lander said. “It’s a cosy, intimate place, with a very enthusiastic audience. It allows us to play at a level which engenders a good atmosphere, but still allows people to enjoying good social conversation without being drowned out.” The Claptomaniacs also features the special talents of lead singer and Cooroy resident Kenny Gamble. The RSL will as usual be laying on a great menu and bar service, and entry is free. Call the club for table bookings, 5447 6131.

THE start of a new year is a good excuse try something new, or refresh some existing health goals. For some, this might be as simple as seeking a better balance between food enjoyment and good nutrition. Some of us are seeking more, maybe even a totally fresh start. Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, says doing a detox is a great way to get the extra energy to see new goals through. “It is sometimes the only new year thing I do and it is not difficult to complete”. The festive season is famous for a little indulgence. If you find this has slowed progress towards your health goals, a comprehensive detoxification program can get your back on track. Jodie says some signs that you could benefit from a comprehensive detox program include: feeling tired or lethargic, weight gain, digestive disturbances, recurrent headaches, muscle aches and pains, poor short-term memory or concentration, allergies or sensitivities, depression, anxiety or mood swings. Jodie has developed the NuMe Detox Program which involves taking specially formulated supplements for a two week period and may also include some dietary changes. For example, participants are encouraged to avoid caffeine, alcohol and processed food as much as possible. Starting a NuMe Detox is easy. Jodie emails a Health Questionnaire to complete before your appointment. Next is your Initial Consultation for dietary and health assessment and Cellular Health and Body Composition report. Armed with your specialised diet and herbal and nutritional supplements you are ready to start the NuMe Detox Program. Two weeks later your Cellular Health and Body Composition is re-tested. Jodie then helps you form a plan to create fantastic health into the future! You can visit the Nutrition Means website for further details. Just go to ‘Join NuMe’ in the menu tab and select NuMe Detox. Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in improving a wide range of health conditions through nutrition and natural health therapies. Hinteractive Physio are pleased to have well known local Robyn Caddell instructing Yoga 2 nights per week.Robyn is an endurance athlete who credits yoga as being what has kept her body supple and strong for her events. She is born and raised in Cooroy and has previously spent 12 years in the Army and now runs her own company Elambah Coaching. Elambah Coaching focuses on women’s transformation through Yoga, Life, Wellness and Endurance Coaching. After completing her 200h Yoga Teacher Training in Vinyasa and Hatha yoga at the Vinyasa Yoga School in Rishikesh India she returned to Australia to start teaching. During the teaching process she found that teaching Hatha was more rewarding due to its inclusivity of all lev-

els of abilities and fitness whereas Vinyasa is far more cardio intensive. Hatha is a general category that includes most yoga styles and is the classical style of yoga practiced throughout the world. It is an old system that includes the practice of asanas (yoga postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises), which help bring peace to the mind and body, preparing the body for deeper spiritual practices such as meditation. Hatha yoga is about finding balance. While the classes are relatively gentle, slow and great for beginners or students who prefer a more relaxed style where they hold poses longer, Hatha Yoga can also be very challenging and rewarding. Regular practice can improve your health and you will likely see improvements in the following ar-

eas: increase your flexibility; increase muscle tone and strength; improve your circulatory and cardio health; helps you sleep better; increase your energy levels; improve athletic performance; reduce injuries; improve your posture; improves anxiety and depression; release endorphins that improve your mood and so much more... No matter your level of fitness or yoga experience come join Robyn for a class and see how the benefits of yoga can impact your life. Classes are 1 hour in duration and cost $15 for a casual visit or you can purchase a 10 class pass for $130 from Robyn directly. N.B. Hinteractive Physio class passes are not valid for Robyn’s classes. Please call the clinic on 5442 5556 to register your interest or contact Robyn on 0490 489 163.

health Why am I sooooo thirsty?!

COOROY RAG

Lots of hot Summer days and parties at night ... it’s hard to believe that the silly season is nearly here again ... so we thought it would be a great time to remind you all about the importance of avoiding dehydration! But what is the big deal if you get dehydrated? Well, did you know that more than half of your body weight is water?! No wonder we feel that we are not able to survive for more than a few hours without having a drink! We NEED water for our bodies to function correctly, and without it, we will end up very sick.....here’s why!! • Water is the biggest part of all the fluids that travel around in the body, and there is a large amount of water inside your cells too. Even your bones have a considerable amount of water in them. • The water moves as part of the blood and lymph circulating through the body, giving food and oxygen to the cells and helping waste to be taken away. • Water also carries digestive enzymes around our gastrointestinal tract, so that our food can be broken down. Anything that the body doesn’t want is also carried with water in the blood to the kidneys, which make urine, and some water stays in the gut, then comes out as faeces. • The body also uses water to keep our core body temperature at about 37degrees Celsius. • Water is in the fluids that keep joints moving smoothly • Water is also the main component of saliva and mucous in the body. So what are the most common signs you may notice in a person who is dehydrated? Increased thirst; Dry or sticky mouth; Feeling tired or sleepy; Deceased urine output (with urine looking a dark yellow colour); Sunken eyes; Few/nil tear production in the eyes; Headache; Dizziness; Sunken fontanelles in an infant (the soft spot on the top of the head); Poor skin elasticity (skin sinks back slowly to its normal position when pinched). Oh you usually have a sports drink when you

think you’re dehydrated? You’re wondering why you should pay extra to use the Oral Rehydration Salts from your pharmacy? In order to rapidly rehydrate the body and retain the fluid that has been consumed, it is important to have the right levels of glucose (sugar) and electrolytes (salts, and in particular sodium) in the solution. Usually, sports drinks have lots of sugar (to make them taste good) and not enough sodium, therefore interfering in the rehydration process. Rehydration formulas from our LiveLife pharmacies are formulated to contain the CORRECT concentration of these active ingredients. So here are some final tips on preventing dehydration this Summer: Avoid the hottest part of the day for sporting activities if possible; Wear loose, light-coloured and comfortable clothing – remember that dark colours absorb heat; Ensure you are wearing sunscreen and a hat that shades your head, neck, ears and face – sunburn may stop your body from being able to cool itself down properly; Hydrate with water or oral rehydration salt therapy before, during and after sport/exercise/alcohol consumption. Alcohol dehydrates the body, so avoid drinking any alcohol if you are going to be doing anything that may increase your risk of dehydration. Be alert and check for symptoms of heat stress and dehydration LiveLife and stay cool and hydrated this Summer!! LiveLife Pharmacy Cooroy & Pomona

At this time of the year there are many demands on the young family’s budget. With the annual sign-on for the football season starting in January some keen young players just might not get the opportunity to start their dream of becoming the next Tim Cahill. With this in mind Sunshine Coast Football Federation Referee (and local Noosa Councillor) Brian Stockwell is helping two local clubs support two worthy families with children wanting to play Federation Football in the Noosa Shire. “I grew up with my brother and sister and a determined mum who had to make ends meet on her own, with widow’s pension and some part time piano teaching. So I know how it’s hard to balance the demands for football, dancing lessons and the like. I recall I got a hand up from my local club to buy my first pair of boots and a mouth guard. It was only $50 but that was a big deal back in the 60s. The boots were the old high leather over the ankle variety – hipsters would be jealous” Brian said. A Masters player himself Brian referees as a hobby, for fun and fitness. “Reffing has reduced the numbers of hours I traditionally did as a volunteer so I thought it would be a good idea to reallocate a $1000 a year from my match fees back to the clubs where I do most of my games. I get the benefit of keeping the weight off and a bit of petrol money.” He said. The bursary recipients will receive funds toward their club registration and kit. As a bonus they will receive registration and kit for a term at the Noosa Football Academy. According to Brian “Having access to development programs run by the NPL Coach of the year Kevin Aherne-Evans is a great opportunity that

we haven’t had in the Shire before “ The bursary is not a talent based scholarship. The skill level of the applicants is not part of the selection criteria. “It’s more focussed on providing opportunities to players (boys or girls) whose family circumstances may inhibit them participating fully in their chosen sport. It’s also a way I can help reward players who demonstrate a commitment to honouring the principles and practices of the FFA Respect Program’s Code of Conduct. At the end of the day learning the virtue of good sportsmanship, team work and respect for officials and the rules is one of the most important aspects of junior team sports” Mr Stockwell said. Applications are now open for the “Brian Stockwell Respect Bursary” with details available from the Noosa and Cooroora Club secretaries. There will be two bursaries available for the 2017 season, one each at the coast’s Noosa Lions Football Club (secretary@noosalionsfc.com ) and the hinterland’s Cooroora United Football Club (secretary@cufc.org.au).
