More than 20 projects funded in latest community grants round is on

MORE than 20 community projects will share in $153,000 worth of funding in the latest round of Noosa Council’s Community Grants program. Community grants support a wide range of cultural, social, sporting and environmental projects. This round provides funding for CooroyNoosa Genealogical and Historical Research Group’s new heritage centre project and Peregian Tennis Club’s retaining wall and seating replacement project. Noosa Open Studios – a new event in which local artists open their studios to visitors – has also received funding, as has Marcus Beach Bushcare Association’s interpretive walks initiative. Cooroy-Noosa Genealogical and Historical Research Group Secretary and Grants Coordinator Julie Kinloch said the not-for-profit organisation was delighted

to receive a grant. “This will allow our committee to start building a new heritage centre early next year. It’s a project we’ve been tirelessly fundraising to build, for 18 years,” she said. Noosa Mayor Noel Playford said the latest grants round had attracted significant interest. “Council established the community grants program to help support the work of our shire’s many community groups and their enthusiastic volunteers,” he said. “Council is pleased to be able to support a host of worthwhile initiatives from the hinterland to the coast.” The assessment panel reviewed each application against a range of criteria including the project’s contribution to the community’s quality of life, local heritage, and sports, recreation and cultural participation.

WHEN: Thursday 21st January 2016, Time: 7pm for 7.30pm- 9pm, Where: Cooroy State Primary School Hall, 59 Elm Street, Cooroy. Permaculture Noosa monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of each month at Cooroy State Primary School Hall, 59 Elm Street, Cooroy, 7pm for 7.30pm- 9pm. Beginning at 7pm with a market place where members share their surplus home grown produce and plants by giving, exchanging or selling. Ending with supper at 9pm. Gold coin donation for non-members. All welcome. Our January Meeting’s Theme:

Guilds. With the success of the November meeting where we trialled a new format, the January meeting on Thursday 21st January 2016 will follow on with the theme of Guilds. A selection of plants grown together to support a primary or climax plant (usually a fruit tree) while supporting each other. Insects and animals are included, all working together. The meeting will be interactive where people will have an opportunity to discuss their experiences and examples. What has worked well and what they have learned. Those that are new to the idea can ask questions and learn from others.

Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society

THE Noosa Club conduct their first meeting for the year on February 6th. Any one interested in growing orchids is welcome to attend as visitors. The meetings are a great place to meet like-minded people and learn to grow their plants. Each meeting we have a mini show, which is judged with points going to an end of the year trophy. It is a great way to show off your growing prowess. I often here the comment I love orchids but they are too hard to grow. This comment could not be further from the truth as Orchids are probably one of the easiest flowering plants to grow. There are over 30,000 species of orchids growing in the world. There are plenty of orchids that grow with ease in the Sunshine Coast area. One of these varieties is Vandas, which are indigenous to south East Asia. Vandas grow very well in our area. With the right varieties they can be grown outdoors or under shade house conditions. I have certain ones growing in full sun. The thing to remember is their natural habitat is warm and has high humidity so when it is dry I keep the water up to them. To learn more about Vandas and other types of orchids you can visit the club meetings, which are held the first Saturday of each month at the Tinbeerwah Hall. The meetings start at 1.00pm. For more information contact John Green Ph. 54832764 or visit the club website.

Call for input into a new Noosa Transport Strategy NOOSA Council is calling on the community to help it develop a new transport strategy to carry the Shire through to 2036. The Noosa Transport Strategy will focus on Noosa’s public and private transport networks, and it provides an opportunity for residents to help set the transport agenda in Noosa for the next 20 years. “With pressures on Noosa residents’ lifestyle from an increasing population and car usage, together with millions of visitors to the region annually, there is an urgent need for a high performing and effective passenger transport system,” says Noosa Council Planning and Infrastructure Director Martin Drydale. The Strategy will include a 20-year vision, an interim 10-year strategy and a five-year action plan. Mr Drydale says it will spell out important priorities to avoid future traffic gridlock. “Transport falls within the responsibility of not just Council but also the state government and the private sector,” Mr Drydale said. The strategy will address: • Ways to improve the existing passenger trans-

Strategies employed between 2006 and 2016 have achieved much, which the new Strategy will build on. These included: the development of a comprehensive network of cycle and

pedestrian paths, the construction of the transit centre at Noosa Junction and the nine-year TravelSmart initiative that was rolled out in schools, workplaces, key destinations and the general community. TravelSmart encouraged travel behaviour change and the adoption of alternatives to car travel such as better use of public

transport, carpooling, cycling, walking and take-up of motor scooters. CARA President’s Report LAST year saw several development applications in our area considered by the Noosa Council, notably the Cooroy Highway Service Centre and the Cooroy Broiler Farm, both of which were refused by Council. The applicant for the Service Centre lodged an appeal in the Planning and Environment Court on 28 August, but there have been no hearings to date. After the horrific accident at the intersection of Swift Road and

Lake Macdonald Drive, CARA decided to host a public meeting on road and traffic issues such as speed limits, parking issues, pedestrian crossings, the Elm Street Bridge congestion, cycle lanes, signage, traffic calming, noise issues, and accident procedures. CARA asked the Noosa Council and State member Peter Wellington for assistance with the Elm Street bridge congestion. Peter replied that the state has a policy of fixing problems that

cause the most fatalities. However, Council has employed traffic consultants who conducted research on the Elm Street Bridge and Elm Street – CooroyTewantin Road intersections, which showed that these are both dangerous. Council is hoping that this research will help when presenting a case to the state government for funding new intersection arrangements. Revising the Noosa Plan After council elections, the new Noosa Council

will embark on the huge task of rewriting the Noosa Plan. To gather ideas on changes that would benefit the Cooroy area, CARA hosted a Cooroy planning breakfast (Cooroy: Where To Now?) at the Cooroy Hub, which was attended by about 50 people and emceed very capably by Richard Hansen of Inspiring Cooroy. Councillors and representatives of the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce spoke, and

attendees presented many excellent ideas on planning Cooroy’s future. A website (www.cooroy.org) was set up by CARA for interested persons to post and discuss ideas on planning changes to council. Next year, we may hold workshops to finalise any recommendations for changes/ improvements to the town plan. Future CARA information nights: Meet the Candidates (mid Feb 2016) and an EDV debate.

OVER the past six months a group of enthusiastic, home-schooled children have come together once a week with a dedicated and engaging teacher, Mr Mike Dash, to learn the many facets of robotics. The Cooroy Scout Hall comes alive with creations every Thursday as the children aged approximately 5-15 work together to build various robotic projects. Each project helps teach an aspect of robotics. The first month students worked on building their own Laser Spy Alarm. From there they moved on to learning to program a Lego-like robot (that was invented right here in Australia) called Edison. The children took their Edison robot on many “missions” designed to help students discover more about programing robots. The students do some pretty incredible and technical projects as well. They learned about binary (zeros and ones) so they could program a customised message into a 7-segment display. To do all these projects students need to know about the parts inside a robot. The best way to do that is by working with

them hands-on. Students got to tear apart old stereos, VCRs, printers and other junk to discover what capacitors, resistors, transistors, LEDs, switches, motors, and many other parts do. Then they took their dissected junk and built their own robots! Recently, they learned how to add more brain power to their robots using a micro-computer called an Arduino. This let them build “Peanut” - a robotic elephant that detects and flings peanuts. Just this month the students learned about how an iPhone touch-screen works; then, using their Arduino, they made their own capacitive touch sensing pianos. To add some flare to the pianos students added multicolour LEDs. To learn how to control these fancy lights we looked at how humans perceive colour, and then experimented with making our own “pixels”. With theory and practical all thrown into the mix, it’s been an amazing educational experience of quite an extensive topic. Mike Dash (robotics.dashx.net) drives more than an hour each way to come up to our Sunny Coast children and stays all day to repeat his

Mike Dash teaching home-school students robotics classes for two big groups. Combined with Kym Fullerton (Great Reasons to Home School, HOME’S COOL, w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / educationideas) who helps navigate the timetable to bring the home schoolers together and who loves to create educational events and promote the wonderful things our home schoolers are achieving in the community and to bring about awareness that home schooling is a viable option for those not wishing to take a mainstream approach. And to give credit where credit is due to the great teachers we find and the awesome things the children are achieving.

Robotics will soon be a big part of the Australian curriculum. Right now in Cooroy, kids can take classes in robotics, programing (Java Script, HTML, Scratch drag and drop), and even humanoid NAO Robots. This technology is huge for their generation and the future. Classes like these also show that home schoolers are not missing out on anything. Everything is still available to us if we seek it out and put it into action. What would be even more beneficial to our home-schooling community though, is a way to fund some of these events to ease the financial burden on

some parents as it can take a huge financial sacrifice for many to make that homeschooling choice. Good teachers are worth the costs and our children are worth it too, but if anyone has any funding or scholarship suggestions and/or contributions please contact Kym Fullerton at the email below. 2016 will also be seeing more of our home schoolers experiencing Mr Dash’s teaching flare in the subject of Science. We can’t wait – HOME’S COOL! For further information, please contact kymfullerton@hotmail.com or robotics@dashx.net or find us on Facebook or the web at robotics.dashx.net.

Another Christmas – where did it go? Another Christmas Season, another New Year gone by, Another advance in our lives, a step forward in anno Domoni. Perhaps we’ll be pleased to see the old year pass out, It contained many things we could well do without. Bush fires, domestic violence, and sporting corruption, Terrorism, wars, refugees, political disruption. Religion is experiencing a disturbing distraction, While drugs, to our youth, are an unhealthy attraction. The nation’s debt is ballooning, unemployment is a worry, Both of these need attention in a political hurry. Sometimes I wonder if anyone cares, If politics is just a game of musical chairs. The first rule in politics, and this applies to any side, Is to never believe anything, until it’s been officially denied. The more you read, the list seems endless, Maybe I’m too old, so I have decided to be stressless. I’ll spend the rest of my days, which can’t be long, Not to be worried whether things are right or they’re wrong, I’m going to relax, and laugh, and be with my friends, That will provide much happier dividends. I’ll be accused of things I never did, even in jest, And praised for virtues I never possessed. I’ll happily let the messy world pass by, And make political comments, or at least I’ll try. I’ll live by the code of mind over matter, If nobody minds, it doesn’t matter. Jim Dunstan

ENSURING you are well informed before casting your vote for the next council elections is the most important thing you can do! The mayor and councillors are the people who will make daily decisions about the future of Noosa. In an effort to help voters get the information they need, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce Inc and Cooroy Area Residents Association (CARA), are hosting a Meet the Candidates Night. “We’ve held these public meetings for many past elections in Cooroy and they are always well attended and helpful. All the candidates are given the opportunity to speak briefly and the audience also has some question time. We urge everyone to come

along and hear what the candidates have to say,” said Danielle Taylor, President of Cooroy Chamber of Commerce Inc. “There is a big field of quality candidates this election so attending a forum like this is a really great way to learn more about the candidates and what they stand for,” said Rod Ritchie, President of CARA. The Cooroy Meet the Candidates Night will be presented at the Cooroy State School Hall in Elm Street on Monday 15 February from 6.00pm. Entry is free and open for everyone to attend. More information can be found on www.cooroy.com.au. All candidates are invited to attend and can confirm their attendance by emailing admin@cooroy.com.au.

Butter making turns to art

AS from 1 January 2016, management of the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre (BFAC) has returned to the community under the guidance of the Cooroy Future Group (CFG), previously known as Cooroy Lower Mill Board, (CLMB) for a 12 month trial. CFG President Tex Pipke, said “We are excited and positive about the coming year. We have welcomed on board Cathy Money as Exhibitions CoOrdinator, and Rachel Bevan as Assistant Exhibitions CoOrdinator. Both are known to many people, including artists in Cooroy, the Noosa area and indeed throughout the Sunshine Coast.

“We are also currently seeking financial members (at a small cost) who wish to become more involved in what is happening at the BFAC”, said Tex. “An application to join Butter Factory Friends (BFFs) can be found on the website under ‘About’.” “We see the BFAC as central to our community and are planning a range of activities such as music recitals, workshops, and They have been busy functions. The site has been reconstituted with significant green space, underground wiring, footpaths, benches and the refurbishment of the Boiler and Hopper are under way. The jewel in the crown has been the opening of the Cooroy Library, a truly modern facility reflecting the needs of the community.”

The spirit of cooperation that the Mill Board had with Council and in particular with the Cooroy Library management, led to new initiatives. Most notable among these was the creation of Cooroy Fusion Festival, joining together the Library, Woodworkers and Orchid Society events on Mother’s Day weekend, an event attracting nearly 10,000 people each year. “We are very excited about where we can take this new project,” concluded Tex.

Wes and staff at Pomona LiveLife Pharmacy

THE end of 2015 welcomed change to the Pharmacy industry in Cooroy and Pomona with the introduction of LiveLife Pharmacy to the hinterland. Jacquie and husband Wesley, bought the Pomona Pharmacy off its previous owners late September and then only a few short months later bought the Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy in December. As you will see the new external signage for LiveLife Pharmacy Cooroy is well underway, with LiveLife Pharmacy Pomona set for a new store makeover in the coming months. Living locally, this newlywed couple is very excited about their adventures and new business in the town as they feel LiveLife will bring excellent service, product variety and value offerings to their customers. With Jacquie based at Cooroy and Wesley at Pomona, this couple are overwhelmed with the support they have already received from customers. You will still see your friendly, familiar faces of the staff in each pharmacy and Jacquie and Wesley would like to welcome you to introduce yourself as they get to know their customers.

They would value your feedback on product and ranges you would like to see available in either town as they look to expand the current offerings. LiveLife is well known around the region, with there being 12 stores here on the Sunshine Coast, and a further 23 stores in other areas of QLD and northern NSW. LiveLife is a community focussed, owner-operated Pharmacy name, basing their central operations in Noosaville, which also employs some Cooroy locals. The pharmacies will continue to offer the same great services, including the Fuji Film digital processing at Cooroy, plus many more services including medication reviews, deliveries, free blood pressure testing, plus many other health promotions throughout the year. To stay up to date with the fantastic offers coming soon, ensure you go into either store and sign up to their excellent loyalty rewards program, which rewards you for shopping locally. Jacquie and Wesley look forward to meeting you at either LiveLife Pharmacy Cooroy or LiveLife Pharmacy Pomona.

THESE tips can help your health, wealth and happiness flourish in the coming year. Another year has flashed by even quicker than the last. Now is the time to look back on whether you achieved everything you wanted to last year and set your goals for the coming year. Here are some tips to help you get organised. Make appointments for health and fitness assessments. Then set your goals and work out a plan for achieving them. Check any fitness club memberships—and your budget—to make sure you will be able to renew them when the time comes. You can also build less-expensive options into your weekly schedule like running, walking, stretching, bodyweight training, and if you’ve got a bike, maybe some cycling too! Finances Your new year will be much easier with your finances in order. • Put a budget in place so you’ll have money to cover everything you’re aiming to achieve in 2016—including Christmas shopping later in the year. • Switch to paperless statements and bills and save on mounting paperwork while you help the environment. • Sort out your superannuation. Find any lost super and bring your super together so you’re not paying additional fees. Consider topping up your super with before-tax dollars too. Salary sacrificing can make a big difference to your nest egg. • Set-up a file for your tax return—with a place ready for filing receipts throughout the year there’ll be no need to go searching and tax time will be much smoother. • Put plans in place to reduce your debt.

Consider putting extra money into your credit card and visit a financial adviser so you can make plans to pay off debt and free up some cash. Make plans now so life’s easier for you and your family: • Think about the things you’d like to have done last year but didn’t, and find ways to spend quality time together this year—do you need to find more worklife balance? • Make arrangements to see people or go places that are important to you¯reminders in your smart phone or diary can keep you on track. • Plan ahead for loved ones’ birthdays and make bookings now so you can ensure their day is special. • Take the stress out of dinner time— consider making mealtimes and shopping easier with food plans and shared responsibilities. Stay on track throughout the year Life’s busy—there’s always so much to do. Tick off your achievements throughout the year and remember to take time to reward yourself as you reach each one! *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd / ABN 52 149 014 004 Authorised representatives and credit representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. Therefore, before making any decision, you should consider the appropriateness of the advice with regard to those matters.

40% of us don’t have one ... Are you one of them? We all know that a Will is one of the most important documents we’ll ever need so why is it that only 59% of us have one? And if you do have one, why do a number of people acknowledge that it hasn’t been updated in many years and doesn’t really reflect their current situation? According to the public trustee service, the average age of a will is 22 years! Yes, time flies. A lot has changed in the world in that time and it’s likely a lot has changed in your life too; business or career advancements, children, even grandchildren? It’s time to redo your Will and plan your estate to protect what you have worked for all these years. And there’s no time like the beginning of a new year to plan and prioritise. If that’s not enough to get your attention here are some more reasons you should have a will.... 1. Your children – to appoint guardians for your children under 18 you must have a Will and to set conditions on when your children can take the benefit from your estate, especially if you wish them to be older than 18. 2. You get to choose who gets what– if you die without a will, the people you want to inherit may not and a “one size fits all” bit of legislation will apply (which doesn’t suit anyone that well). 3. Reduce costs – with a valid Will the administration of your state should be more straightforward and efficient 4. Your Funeral – you are able to appoint a person who can follow your instructions regarding whether you would like to be buried or cremated as well as other details regarding your funeral. This will help your loved ones make decisions for you at a very difficult time. 5. Structures - to leave control of your structures (especially trusts) to a person you trust and/or create structures which may be of significant advantage to your beneficiaries. 6. Protect your family’s future and give yourself and your loved one’s peace of mind by organising your Will today. For more information phone SPM Law at Noosa on 5440 4800 or Gympie on 5482 1733.

Walders celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary

CONGRATULATIONS from the GovernorGeneral Sir Peter Cosgrove, Prime Minister Turnbull, Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey, Premier Palaszczuk, MPs Clive Palmer and Peter Wellington, along with live entertainment from guests including Noosa Councillors Frank Wilkie and Joe Jurisevic, were just some of the huge surprises in store for Eileen and David

Walder when they celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary at Noosa Arts Theatre on Saturday 19 October. Eighty friends and family including grandsons Dylan, Josh and Taylor Crisp, joined them for this milestone celebration with many of guests providing entertainment and revealing to MC Stephen Moore, their connection to the Walders. For most

Page 14 - Cooroy Rag, January 20, 2016

it came as a shock to hear daughter Kerrin tell how the pair met by chance, their early life as a couple and all they have achieved over their 50 years together. Eileen, from England and David from Australia, met in 1965 while hitchhiking in Italy and married just four months later. Following the birth of daughter Kim, they made Australia their permanent home in 1967, moving from Melbourne to the Sunshine Coast in 1979, where they quickly became heavily involved in the community especially through Noosa Arts Theatre and Cooroy Golf Club. Eileen became involved in numerous charities, both Olympic and Commonwealth Games committees as well as being a presenter with SEQ TV and journalist with the Sunshine Coast Daily and Noosa News, before returning to teaching. Since official retirement, she has been a committee member and tutor at Noosa U3A as well as writing several travel articles for magazines. A Life Member at Noosa Arts Theatre and S.E Qld “Theatre

Personality of the Year” in 2000, acting and directing have remained her major passion winning numerous awards. Recently she has found herself in demand again for TV commercials and training videos with even has a small role in the new Rebecca Gibney miniseries to air early next year. David worked for many years as an engineer in light industry and boat building before turning his hand to farming. Many locals recall the Walders’ endless stream of horses, pigs, goats, donkeys and cattle, many rescued from dire situations and becoming pets but requiring the couple still to work full time elsewhere to support the Eerwah Vale menagerie and educate their two daughters. David also became a courier for QML for several years his, humour and good nature made him very popular with receptionists and nurses at surgeries from Gympie and Brisbane. He still enjoys the occasional hugs and chats with ‘his girls’ when meeting them out shopping or socializing. David’s golfing prowess earned him the name of

‘Black Caviar” among friends at Cooroy Golf Club where he again featured among this year’s grade winners, but recent years have seen Eileen drag him along on continuous travel adventures because as she says, “I can’t resist outdoing travel agents by getting my own better deals”. The couple travelled to Gallipoli this year where Eileen ‘encouraged’ knitters to make over 3000 poppies by the time the ship docked. Passengers placed these on the graves at all cemeteries with some continuing on to the Western front. In 2008 the couple established their own charity “Boots for Bali” which has helped equip several village soccer teams and sponsor a little kindergarten in Samuh village so impoverished children can get a start in education. The Walders’ have taken groups with them to enjoy experiences of a lifetime and reveal the true beauty of Bali away from the tourist hype and bad press of the usual hotspots. Oh and just to keep busy, Eileen catered for the event herself!

JANUARY DEL Pain has become almost a household name in Cooroy after many years working at the Cooroy Bowls Club and then at the Cooroy RSL back in 2005. She always has a kind word and welcoming smile for everyone she meets. Del is loved and respected by Cooroy RSL management, colleagues and patrons alike and will be keenly missed around the Club when she retires at the end of January this year. We hope retirement will suit her well and give her more opportunity to get out about town even more and of course have more

free time to play Bingo at the Club. Del is well known for her energy, bubbly personality and trademark voice. She has worked tirelessly to support and promote Cooroy, the RSL and local business. She will always be remembered for hosting the monthly Birthday Parties at the RSL and for greeting each and every member and guest. New Counsellor for the Cooroy/Pomona area ANNA Coats is a counsellor who has extensive experience in assisting people with mental health issues, relationship problems and life transitions. She offers both individual and couples counselling. Counselling can assist people to gain insight about issues, explore their options and develop strategies to meet challenges. We often have an inner knowing which can be undermined by past experience and negative input. Through the counselling process people can tap into their own wisdom, develop confidence, and make informed choices. Each of us, is the expert in our own life. Therefore counselling can assist in finding solutions that best suit the individual. Many of us experience relationship issues which often arise when we can’t communicate clearly. Learning to identify our needs and express ourselves with confidence can assist in healthy relating. Understanding how to set clear boundaries can also benefit personal well being and enhance our relationships. Anna has extensive experience in teaching clear communication and the setting of healthy boundaries. Counselling can be of benefit if you are struggling with any of the following mental health issues: Relationship problems; Depression; Anxiety; Grief and loss; Self Harm; Behaviour problems; Spiritual/emotional alienation; Strong emotions such as anger, fear; Stress Anna uses an integrative approach to counselling which includes talk therapies

such as cognitive behaviour therapy, person centred therapy and solution focused therapy. When people feel ‘stuck’ in emotions like anger or grief then expressive art therapy can help them to transform their emotions and move into a more comfortable space. Feelings can be drawn, written, painted, acted out or symbolised in a sand tray to allow for healthy processing. For the last six years Anna has worked for a Women’s Health Centre providing counselling support and educational programs to women and girls for a wide range of issues. Anna has also worked as a naturopath for the last twenty years providing herbal and nutritional support. Nutritional supplements and a healthy diet can support the nervous system when people are under stress. After working as a naturopath, Anna saw the need to support people with counselling, as their health was often undermined by stress. She went on to complete a Bachelor of Social Science in Counselling and a Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Practice. She is now offering counselling sessions with the option of naturopathic, nutritional support. Anna is a member of the Queensland Counsellor’s Association, PACFA Reg. pomona Yabbaloumba Retreat voted No.1

YABBALOUMBA Retreat, in the Mary Valley near Kenilworth, has much to celebrate. It has been voted the number one accommodation venue in Queensland and number five in Australia by a world-wide accommodation group. And has been awarded a Stellar Stays property earning a place among the top 3 per cent of more than 800,000 properties worldwide. HotelsCombined spokesperson Alberto Castellicchio said the Stellar Stays awards were in recognition of accommodation providers that consistently achieved the highest standards of customer satisfaction worldwide. Nestled in the Mary Valley hinterland, Yabbaloumba Retreat sits on two freshwater creeks which feed the environmentally significant Mary River and is bounded by national parks and States forest. The secluded and romantic get away for couples scored 9.95 out of 10 as voted by more than 300 guests. Neither the owner of the website HotelsCombined or of Yabbaloumba Retreat, Lloyd and Barb Campbell have any input into the Stella Stays award ranking. It is purely judged by guests. It is voted for by guests using a strict criteria such as the quality and consistency of reviews, the absence of recurring or unsolved issues with customers, popularity of the hotel and the overall resulting score of nine or higher. The Campbells are delighted to receive the Stella Stays award both for themselves and the Mary Valley. “We received a rating of 9.95 out of 10 from HotelsCombined and we are dlighted,” Barb Campbell said. “In the Mary Valley we all try to support each other. Through this award we will be able to help promote the Mary Valley, the wonderful and ingenoius people who live here and the niche market industries.” The couple work tirelessly to keep improving their standards and this has been recognised with the awarding of a Stella Stays award. HotelsCombined spokesperson Mr Castellicchio told the Campbells:”You are now officially representing the highest level of customer satisfaction not just in Australia but across the world; an example for the whole industry. This is a significant achievement.” It is not the first accommodation award Yabbaloumba Retreat has won. It has two Tripadvisor Certificates of Excellence and reached the finals of the Sunshine Coast business awards.

Celebrate the month of love I KNOW, I can hear you saying “but it is only the end of January”, however when it comes to LOVE and sharing it you can never be too early. Even though you may still have the food coma from Christmas and the hangover from New Years and only just thinking about Australia Day, we at Lakeridge Health and Beauty are preparing for an entire month of LOVE. You can see our month long treatment specials within this edition and complementing these wonderful treatments are some just as wonderful products. We have Coconut, Lavender and Kiwi body packs of body wash, hot salt scrub and body butter. Beautiful Mini Facials packs which include a free eye cream. Eye of Horus mascara and eye liner packs are always a hit and for him (no we haven’t forgotten the males), Energizing Face Cleanser and Hydrating Fluid duos. As always our Gift Vouchers are popular and versatile. They can be purchased for an amount or for a specific treatment or two. Perfect for that special person who changes their mind often. And now our Gift Vouchers can be emailed to you or direct to the lucky recipient if you don’t have time to drop in and collect in person. Gift vouchers can be redeemed towards IPL permanent hair removal treatment, our new Microdermabrasion Facial, a relax-

ing Bowen Therapy or Massage or maybe a glittering pedicure and manicure. So here’s hoping you had a merry Christmas, a festive New Year and plan a patriotic Australia Day but don’t forget the LOVE and share some around (as we will be) this February. Phone 5442 6239.

COOROY RAG

Two years old and still growing

Alec Bragg, Tim Robinson and Courtney Mallett ADVANCED Physio Cooroy recently celebrated its second year of operation. The Principal of Advanced Physio Cooroy, Tim Robinson, thanked the Cooroy community for their support of the Practice and its professional team. ‘I think there are three main reasons for our success - firstly, we are focussed on the needs of

our patients; secondly, the staff work together as an effective team; and thirdly, all our treatments follow an evidence-based model of care’, Tim says. The success of the Practice has been marked by the appointment of two new staff: Alec Bragg and Courtney Mallett. Alec Bragg - Wisdom and Experience Alec was raised on the land in northern NSW and has extensive experience as a physiotherapist. His interest in physiotherapy developed from his teenage enthusiasm for sports and he regards himself as ‘one of the lucky ones’, as he has never been bored in his professional practice. Alec has a special interest in men’s health, sporting injuries and employment injuries. ‘I have worked in many physiotherapy clinics, as well as running my own practice, and Advanced Physio Cooroy encourages professional interaction in developing the best treatment plans for our clients. Effective communication is one of the hallmarks of a practice which puts clients first’, he says. Courtney Mallett - Enthusiasm and Commitment

Courtney is a local who has chosen to start her professional career as an exercise physiologist in Cooroy. She graduated with distinction from the four-year degree in exercise physiology at the Queensland University of Technology in 2015. ‘I love Cooroy! After four years of working in Brisbane, I realised that the country lifestyle suits me, and I work with people from all works of life’, she says. Courtney’s specialised training allows her to develop exercise and lifestyle programs on an individual basis using the equipment in the Practice’s boutique gym. ‘It is satisfying helping people reach their goals and improve their health’, Courtney says.

How you can help to keep your body happy and healthy every day in 2016? HERE are some important dietary tips to keep your engine running: Don’t set unrealistic goals and starve yourself. Make changes slowly such as adding a salad to your meal or switching from butter to cholesterol free oil when cooking. If you skip meals, you may find you eat more when you do eat and this may lead to a larger stomach capacity! Reduce portion size – use smaller plates at home, order entrée size when dining out or split a dish with a friend. Meat, fish and chicken should be the size of the palm of your hand. Create new eating habits –Eat with others and NOT in front of TV, take time to chew your food as it can take a few minutes for your brain to recognize you’re full. Ask yourself if you are really hungry and try having a glass of water before your start your meal. Use a small fork; it takes longer to eat, therefore the “full” signal occurs before we finish our meal. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it will give your metabolism a kick-start for the day. Eat 3 healthy meals daily, with small additional snacks in between to keep energy levels up and boost the metabolism. Some examples of good “snacks” include raw nuts/seeds, fresh/dried fruit, low-fat yoghurt & vegetable sticks with low fat dip. Fill up on fruit and vegetables – these are the foundation of a healthy diet and should be in every meal. Aim for at least 5 portions per day. Avoid fruit juice and canned fruit as they have high amounts of sugar. Water is a vital part of a healthy diet. It helps flush out waste products and toxins. Try to eat HEALTHY carbohydrates as they provide longer-lasting energy and keep you fuller

for longer as they are digested slowly. These include whole-grains, beans, fruits and vegetables, brown rice and wholemeal pasta. Try to avoid unhealthy carbohydrates such as white flour, sugar and rice; these are digested quickly and cause a rapid spike in energy and blood sugar levels that don’t last. Dietary fibre is essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system, and makes you feel fuller for longer. Good sources of fibre are beans, fruit and oat products. Include good sources of healthy fats in the form of omega-3 as they are needed to nourish the brain and heart. Sources include salmon, avocados, nuts and seeds. Reduce or limit saturated and trans fats. Saturated fats are found primarily in animal sources (red meat and whole milk dairy products) and trans fats and found in margarines, chips, biscuits, snack food, fried foods, and other processed foods. Protein is important as it gives us energy and is the basic building block for our growth and energy. Limit your sugar consumption. Sugar causes rapid spikes in energy that don’t last. Avoid sugary drinks (e.g. Cola drinks) as they can contain about 10 teaspoons of sugar. Salt should be used sparingly (no more than 4 grams of salt daily — i.e. 1600mg sodium). This will help to avoid fluid retention and bloating and can also decrease blood pressure. Canned soups and frozen meals contain hidden salts that surpass the recommended daily allowance. Avoid alcohol –contains lots of calories and puts strain on your liver. Information supplied by Jacqueline Kiel B.Pharm MPS, LiveLife Pharmacy, Cooroy

ON Sunday, January 24, The Cooroy Eumundi Cricket Club will be hosting the Sunshine Coast Cricket Association Division 2 One Day Grand Final and everyone’s invited. Not only are they hosting the game at Cooroy, they are also playing in it. This is quite a remarkable feat given that the last season they were playing four divisions below this level. The ‘new kids on the block’ have had a remarkable year surprising opposition teams by conceding only one game for the season; this match they lost on the last ball and by only one run. Club President, John Hope, was playing coy about what must be unbeat-

able odds for a win stating that “he did not want to jinx the boys’ optimism”. They play Caboolture who have dominated the League for the last five years but succumbed to Cooroy earlier this season. John cited youth as being a major factor in their success. Caleb Hamilton and Tom Mackee are two lads who have progressed through the ranks at the Club to produce consistent youthful talent this year. This together with the balance of experience shown by captain Andy Finn, prolific run scorer James Francis and ex-scorcher fast bowler Matthew Campbell, have resulted in

a consistent and formidable combination this season. The Cooroy Sports Hub, as major Club sponsor, is encouraging local support for the team by offering a ‘Cougar Club’ package for the day that includes access to the marquee at the game where light snacks will be provided and drinks can be purchased from the bar, an invitation to the civic celebration with Councillor Frank Pardon and a post-game dinner with dancing back at The Hub. Tickets ($25) can be purchased from the Cooroy Eumundi Cricket Club. Play starts at 11am, so drop in and help to give our Cougars some real bite!

Martial Arts - join the fun!

Mr Habershon pictured with some of his enthusiastic students MATT Fiddes award winning ‘Mighty Matts’ program is specifically designed to help teach 3-6 year olds the important qualities of Respect, Discipline, Self Control and Confidence They also learn great character and self-defence skills … all done through play. It’s lots of fun and great to hear them all laughing as they learn. Instructor, Mr Habershon is a 2nd Degree Black Belt and has been teaching for Matt Fiddes Australia for the past five years. He believes very strongly in the program. Coming through the ranks himself, he knows the program works. He has a great rapport with the youngsters and gets the very best out of them in a fun and nurturing environment. As the children work their way through up through the ranks they are rewarded with certificates and trophies. The junior program (7-12) works hand in hand with a child’s school work, pro-

sport Thinking of joining a friendly golf club? COOROY Golf Club is inviting women of all levels to join their 9 hole competition on Tuesday mornings. The Tuesday Club is designed for beginners to come along and join in. An Australian handicap is not essential and you can play for 3 weeks before needing to become a member of the club. Memberships are currently available. We have golf clubs for hire, balls, gloves, everything to get you started. Enjoy a coffee with some new friends afterwards. We would also welcome experienced golfers who would like to play 9 holes in our Tuesday Club competition and/or 18 holes on Thursdays. The new year competition will begin on Tuesday 2nd February 2016 at 7am (arrive 6.30am) but you are very welcome to come along any Tuesday and see if our group is what you have been looking for.
