Cheer on our Baton Relay runners THE Queen’s Baton Relay is a unique symbol of the Games with its journey connecting the 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth. Thousands of people across the globe have touched the Queen’s Baton and now its Cooroy’s turn to share the dream. We have four local worthy nominees selected to carry the baton: Abbey Morcom, Yvonne Pattinson, Clinton Stanley and Sue Stanley. The baton begins its journey from Read Park Tewantin at 3.52pm on Monday 26th March, 2018. Abbey’s baton leg is from 124 Hilton Terrace to the middle of Duke Bridge with an estimated start time of 4.26pm. Yvonne will start her leg at 4.33pm from 167 Gympie Terrace to the Quota Park Bus stop. The baton continues to Sue. Her start time is 4.45pm from 62 Noosa Parade to 42 Noosa Parade where she will hand the baton to her son (Cooroy’s Super Fish) Clinton. The baton then continues its way and reaches its destination Main Beach Noosa at 5.30pm. “In my wildest dreams I would never have thought that one day I’d be handing the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton to my amazing son Clinton,” said Sue. “How excited and proud we both are. I feel very emotional about it really.” You may remember in 2006 that Clinton carried the baton through Cooroy on its way to the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. Sue and Clinton will be heading back to the Cooroy RSL after their relay legs and invite you to join them in their celebrations. Yvonne is also feeling excited and a little nervous about having the opportunity to carry the baton on its journey to the Games. She is planning to celebrate with those who wish to join her with dinner at the Saw & Mill in Cooroy (Reservations required). Abbey will be celebrating with family and friends. “I feel very honoured and extremely proud to get this opportunity to be a part of the QBR,” said Abbey. “To be running in front of my parents, family, friends and Sporting Associations that I have been connected to is very special. My grandparents live in Alice Springs NT and Murray Bridge SA so they can’t be here to cheer me on, so hopefully my parents have that covered and are filming it.” Even though the baton isn’t coming through Cooroy, let’s support our community runners and go and cheer them on and share the dream of celebrating this wonderful community.

Our Jim hits a century ON March 19th Jim Dunstan will turn 100! This, says Jim, is something of a surprise to him as he’s led a very adventurous life. “It’s been a wonderful 100 years,” says Jim. “I’ve had a lot of fun, I’ve got a terrific family and made some great friends. What more could a man want.” Jim certainly has led an interesting life. By all accounts as a youngster he lived the life of ‘Huckleberry Finn’ swimming and exploring in and around the Brisbane River. “Barely a day went by when I didn’t come home bleeding,” laughs Jim. “My mother was a very patient woman.” At 14 Jim became the youngest glider pilot in Australia and just after his15th birthday, survived his first serious crash. In 1939 Jim joined the army and spent two years with the AIF in Papua New Guinea. In 1948 Jim joined the then young Ansett Transport Industries as sales manager Queensland/NSW working his way up the corporate ladder. In 1971 he was sent to Madang as manager for Ansett Airlines of Papua New Guinea and in 1973 he helped establish Air Niugini. Jim looks back fondly on his years in New Guinea with his wife Maidie by his side. In 1981 Jim was awarded an MBE for services to civil aviation. Jim has been on the board at Kabara (where he now resides), the Cooroy Hospital Board, a member of Probus Club, Golf Club, RSL Club and until last year was Vice President of the Cooroy Rag Community Newspaper. He had many admirers of the topical poems he wrote for us each edition. A big Happy 100th Birthday to Jim Dunstan for March 19th. Much love from the Cooroy ‘Ragettes’ xoxoxo
Hall opening delayed
COOROY hall has fallen victim to our wet weather. The hall’s opening gala weekend, which was planned for 24 and 25 March, has been delayed by the rain and the opening date has now been rescheduled for April 21. CMHA committee member Mr Phil McGrath said the rain had delayed last minute projects such as the concrete disabled ramp into the hall, and the new front alcove. Both structures needed to be built and certified by Noosa Council before the hall could be used, he said. More information about the rescheduled opening can be found on the Hall’s facebook page, and on the CMHA’s new webpage at www.cooroyhall.org.au

Letter to the editor I AM writing in reference to an article in the Cooroy Rag on the 28 th February 2018 by Jim Cooney. We do agree in one small part of his letter that council lacks some business experience in moving forward with this RV stop over. The ridiculous left over from the last council with the payment of the commission and the set rate is the most we have ever heard of collecting money on 1 day a week from the caretaker and banking it for council . We believe it is money, as the saying goes, for jam. We have been in contact with Cooroy No Worries caravan park every bit of the way and the owner can see that this stop over can make them more income because people like the area and want to stay longer. Remember this is not a caravan park. The RV Park has a limited stay time. This benefits all of the other caravan parks in the Noosa shire and may even support the Cooroy country cottages because the grey nomads may leave the van and stay in the cottages, as we do ourselves. Local government is well placed to run caravan parks and stop overs as they own
the land or it’s under trustee ship and cannot be sold on to developers to build units, flats etc. Council and ratepayers do very well out of the Noosa River caravan park and many other councils Australia wide do the same and it keeps their towns viable. As for being in a flood plain most other parks and stopovers share the same concerns but we as caravanners can be off quickly and the time warning in Cooroy gives the Caravanners enough time to go . The factories, yes they’re there but shut down for the night so you get a good sleep and the beauty of this stop over is it’s close to town and the spends are big by caravan persons in the town of Cooroy. We were asked by the council to submit a report which we did and no notice was taken of it. The big ask by us is to open the toilet block and charge a small sum to cover cleaning costs and a small upgrade with painting and some fittings. The money would be returned in a short time and the increase in patronage would be 30% min return extra at no cost to the ratepayers. The Car Club and the Pony club use these toilets now, so they are not in bad condition. Ray Kelly & Doug Claydon

Message from Marty By Marty Hunt, MP I AM planning to do regular ‘mobile offices’ around the electorate, the first round will commence in the week commencing Monday 26 th March. Mobile offices allow me to get out and about to meet constituents who might not be able to access my Nambour office, and also provides me an opportunity to see first-hand issues of concern to different communities in the Nicklin Electorate. On this occasion I will be visiting the communities of Cooroy, Mapleton, Palmwoods and Kenilworth, where I hope to meet with locals and
various community and business groups. I am currently locking in meeting times and dates and encourage you to follow me on Facebook for final details. Last week in Parliament I asked the Premier for an update on some critical infrastructure upgrades well overdue in this electorate. These projects included the Cooroy Station pedestrian crossing and the two dangerous Cooroy intersections (corner of Myall and Elm Streets and corner of Diamond and Elm Streets), as well as the Nambour Police Station upgrade. I will share the response with
the community when it has been received. Please keep an eye out for me in the week commencing 26 March, follow me on Facebook for final details or call my office (5406 4100) should you require further information.

NEW SEASON
Muir’s Musings With Brigid Muir WE subconsciously judge a person based upon their facial features. I realised I am very much guilty of this today as I observed the interaction of a hospitality worker with a customer. The customer looked weatherbeaten and probably much older than her years. Her greying, thin, knotted hair was a mess and her clothes ratty and stained. She was regaling the staff member with a sad story. Her house in Nambour had flooded and she was in emergency accommodation, awaiting Centrelink payments. The staff member patiently listened to the customer and seemed rather relieved at my arrival, promptly excusing herself from the woman and wishing her well. The staff member had a kind face. She had soft facial features, large brown round eyes and full lips that naturally turned upward when she spoke. I immediately felt comfortable in her presence as she engaged me in polite conversation over my order. It came as no surprise to me to learn that she was studying at the University of the Sunshine Coast to be a social worker. I told her that she would make an excellent social worker due to her friendly nature and kind face. Isn’t it interesting how the ways people interact with a person can be based upon their physicalities, which is purely as a result of genetics and parentage? Some people look mean, angry, snobbish, tired or kind simply based on the shape of their eyes, position of their eyebrows, shape of their lips and their facial expressions. We are drawn to some and feel uncomfortable around others, basically due to the shape and position of their eyes, ears, mouth and nose. We humans are a funny lot. Interestingly, research points to the fact that we attain the face we deserve as the muscles we frequently use depend on our usual disposition,
THONGS ALL REDUCED
creating lines and wrinkles due to habitual contraction. According to this theory, our personality can define our appearance, so perhaps judging a book by its cover is not necessarily off the mark. AUSTRALIAN society suffers from an endemic victim mentality culture. Playing the victim and blaming others or organisations for personal failings is far easier than looking to ways to fix the problem at hand. It is not the supermarkets’ fault that many Australians are unhealthily large. The cigarette companies did not force smokers to smoke. It’s not the fault of a car manufacturer for causing an accident when there’s a drunk driver at the wheel. People are choosing to be disempowered instead of skilling up, making informed choices and developing mental toughness. In some situations, parents are advocating a victim mentality in their children by essentially wrapping them children up in cotton wool, whilst not teaching essential life skills. Ultimately, how we respond to something is within our control. We can be upset, offended and have our egos shot to pieces, or we can shake it off, treating the unkind words, criticism or bad experience like water droplets sliding off ducks’ feathers. Bad things happen, but how we deal with them depends on how much we enable the experience to affect us. The ultimate toolkit of weapons in any adverse situation is resilience, kindness, a smile, commonsense and a good heart. Nothing is more disarming than compassion, empathy and thanking the perpetrator of the misfortune for their advice, insight and feedback. It’s rather amusing and it works!

Break costs beware! Geoff Edwards, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank THE economic climate, doom and gloom, shares are up, then down again. Large, well known companies declaring big losses... There’s no doubt that everyone’s financial situation remains topical. In August 2008, the official cash rate was 7.25%. We’re now in March 2018 and that rate now sits at 1.50%. With a drop of 5.75% this drop has been great for many home loan customers and it has provided relief for their household budgets. The drop is significant, for example: If you had a home loan of $300,000 and you have seen this 5.75% reduction, the payments on your loan from September compared to now have probably dropped by close to $330 per week or more than $1,400 per month. Frustration continues to be felt by those on fixed rates, but break costs can be costly. It’s important you talk to your bank about these and enquire about your options as they can explain the cost to you. It almost seems methodical that people look to the banks to lay blame for problems in the economic community. “bank bashing” can be almost categorised as a national pastime in Australia. But is it really justified? International banks and financial institutions around the world have not fared well as they have been operating in a less regulated banking environment compared to Australian standards. They have also perhaps been lured into non-traditional banking practices. These practices that
Page 6 - Cooroy Rag, March 14, 2018
now have proven unprofitable and sometimes unethical. While all this has been going on internationally our Australian banks have generally kept on following traditional banking practices, taking in deposits and then lending out those funds as home/investment loans. Conservative, but practices they would now be thankful for. Maybe we could be happy that our banks and consequently we (the customer) are not facing the same situations as our international banking colleagues! If you’d like to discuss any of this in any further detail, please contact me on please contact me on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona). You can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au. Geoff Edwards is the senior branch manager of Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank.

news COOROY RAG How to avoid isolation and stay safe in retirement Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* LIVING alone doesn’t have to mean being socially isolated It’s a common enough scenario facing many older Australians: you find yourself living alone, due to divorce or the death of a partner, and the kids have moved away – often interstate or overseas – leaving you with no close family nearby. If this describes your situation, both you and your family might be worried about how you’ll stay safe in retirement. Around one quarter of all Australian’s aged 65 and over live alone, and while you may consider being independent a hallmark of ageing well, avoiding social isolation in retirement is important, and not just to avoid loneliness. Being part of a community and having a purpose can be key to a happy, healthy life regardless of your age. Research has found that people who are socially isolated are at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, infectious illnesses, cognitive deterioration and earlier death. And remaining connected as you get older can also be important for your safety, as a network of contacts can help to monitor your health and wellbeing. Ways to avoid isolation and stay safe • Join a club that gets together on a regular basis to meet with people who have common interests, such as your local Church, golf, tennis, RSL, bowls club, Rotary or Probus club. • Look into programs for seniors run by the local council, such as book clubs, or council-run courses to learn new skills. • Find out if you have a local men’s shed, which run a variety of skill-based classes, such as cookery or woodwork. • Have a scheduled, regular catch-up with a friend or group of friends. • Have a standing check-in with a family member, such as a fortnightly dinner or nightly phone call. • Getting to know your neighbours can provide an excellent safety net and informal monitoring of
both your wellbeing and the security of your home. • Look into services that can put you in touch with volunteer visitors, such as the community visitors scheme, which is available for people receiving home care packages through the government, or the Old Mate campaign. • If you have medical issues, are susceptible to falls or just want some extra peace of mind, invest in a personal or medical alarm. When triggered, this sends an emergency alert to pre-set mobile phone numbers or a 24-hour monitoring service. Consider your living arrangements If you’d like to remain living at home, but health or mobility issues are making things a little more challenging, consider using Meals on Wheels or another in-home community care service. They can provide help with tasks like shopping, cleaning and gardening, plus regular check-ins on your wellbeing, so you can remain in your home for longer. You could also consider making modifications to your home such as adding shower rails, hand rails, ramps or an emergency alarm. To prevent losing touch with the community you could consider your retirement living options – if you’re a social being, perhaps you’d rather be in a retirement community than at home alone? Or if a friend is in the same situation as you, consider moving in together. Not only would you have live-in company, but by splitting the costs of housing and bills you’d both save money too! For further assistance with managing your finances in retirement, please contact us on 07 5447 7740. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management 1 Pty Ltd | ABN 44 164 359 568 and Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd | ABN: 52 149 014 004, trading as Provision Wealth Management, are Authorised Representatives and Credit Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. Mother’s Day fun at Cooroy Fusion Festival COOROY Fusion Festival is on Saturday 12 May, the day before Mother’s Day. Everyone knows how special mums are in our lives and the Cooroy Fusion Festival plans to make it extra special for mums this year! “This year we’ve got Mum covered on several counts. With all the fantastic local market stalls, Cooroy Fusion Festival is the perfect place to do that last minute gift shopping for Mother’s Day. You are sure to find the perfect, unique gift. Better still, why not give Mum the gift of your time by taking her along to enjoy the festival. Thanks to Wythes Real Estate, we’ve also got a great Mother’s Day card making activity using photos taken in a funky inflatable photo booth,” suggested event organiser, Chris Bell. As with almost everything at Cooroy Fusion, the card making activity is free, as is the photo booth. “We are so excited to be major sponsors for this festival because it is a great community event which really highlights what is so wonderful about Cooroy
and the Noosa Hinterland” said Sirah Robb from Wythes Real Estate. “We encourage everyone to drop in to the photo booth at the Butter Factory Arts Centre and get your photo taken. You can then use the photo strip to make a unique Mothers Day card. It’s a really lovely idea with a great personal touch, even if you just give your Mum one of the photos, we are sure she will love it.” Some of the other activities already confirmed for the 2018 festival are the Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank Entertainment Tent; Noosa Council Cooroy Library activities; Cooroy RSL Pickled Possum Bar; Cooroy IGATastes of the Hinterland
Marquee; Raine & Horne climbing wall and bungee trampoline; Tourism Noosa sand sculptor Dennis Massoud; Greenwood Grove Geckoes Wildlife Show; displays at Cooroora Woodworkers, Cooroy Camphor Laurel, and the Butter Factory Arts Centre; the Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society Show in the Memorial Hall; plus market stalls and many other free activities such as rides, face painting and a great entertainment program, none of which would be possible without the generous sponsorships that make this festival, fun, fabulous and free. The community’s voice
Environmental group Cooran Earth Rights have recently begun a survey of their town. Months of preparation and planning behind them have now
prepared them to go forth and ask the question: ‘Do you want your road or land coal mine and gas field free?’ Each residence will receive a visit from two Cooran Earth Right’s trained volunteers, who will have a survey sheet and an information pack for those who want further material. The goal of the survey is to formally declare ‘Cooran Coal mine and Gas field free’. Volunteers all wear an ID badge, and all data collected is kept confidential. The survey is in response to the discovery of a current permit for exploration of coal in the Noosa Hinterland region which stretches north up through to the Wide Bay area. A lot of the rationale for doing the survey is about standing in solidarity with those who have felt the damaging effects of coal mining in Australia. This survey will follow in the footsteps of over 450 other com-
munities across Australia who have already declared their towns Coal and Gas free. It is an opportunity to talk with people about coal mining, present them with a DVD that tells some of the story, the background and the history of what has happened in this country. This is a process that gives communities a voice. Very often, any consultation with community can go by unnoticed, and sometimes, there is none at all. Our economy is heavily reliant on our uniqueness through tourism, and through lifestyle. Cooran Earth Rights are united in their vision and determined to actively work together so that our communities’ remain safefrom inappropriate mining, and mining in inappropriate areas.

A Star is born NOT quite the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard but Bro Hiscock has completed a beautiful job of placing the morning star to the floor of the Cooroy Masonic Lodge room. The placing of the star marks the commencement of plans for the make-over of the aging lodge room. The lodge room has not changed since 1996 when the then “new building” was first opened. The proposed interior design promises to transform the old lodge room into a modern and pleasurable venue to conduct our meetings.

Vintage is the new black THE Shed @ Cooroy has its 1st Birthday this month at its Opal Street premises behind the BP Servo. The Shed has built quite a reputation up and down the Coast for its random eclectic stock of second hand furniture, rugs, mirrors, artworks, decorator items and garden ware which are sourced locally from markets, deceased estates and downsizing homeowners. It’s not your traditional antique or secondhand store but more a blend of both vintage and relatively new goods. Some have already been upcycled but there are always items for you to paint or add your own special touches to and unusually, a great outdoor area with garden items from pots to statues as well as benches and outdoor settings. Andy says that originally, they took over the premises to use as an office for their IT business to get him ‘out of the house’ and the plan was to use the rest of the space to indulge his hobby of buying and selling interesting wares. However, the popularity of The Shed has meant it has turned into a full-time venture with wife Nova joining him on picking trips and being responsible for the ‘look’ of the store. “I would say she’s the brains and I’m the brawn, but she can actually outlift me when we’re moving furniture around,” joked Andy.
Social media has been a big part of The Shed’s success so far. They regularly post new items on many of the local Buy, Swap and Sell pages which has created a loyal following and Andy says many of the more unusual newly acquired items sell over the phone within minutes of them being posted to customers as far afield as Mackay and the Gold Coast, so you have to get in quick. “Nothing haunts us like the things we didn’t buy,” laughed Lou, The Shed’s newest recruit. Another key ingredient of their success has also been their pricing strategy. As Nova puts it “This is our hobby as well as our job, we love going out buying so we have to make sure we can sell what we buy - that’s why we keep the prices realistic and the turnover high. It’s very easy to turn a second hand store into a museum by charging too much - that’s not us”. To celebrate their 1st Birthday, Andy & Nova are offering all existing and yet to be customers a 10% storewide discount until 31st March 2018. Just grab the coupon from this edition of the Cooroy Rag and take it into the store at 4/2 Opal Street, Cooroy anytime between 9-5 Mon-Fri and 10-1 Sat. If you are downsizing or have items to sell, you can also contact Andy by email andy@theshedcooroy.com.au

COOROY RAG
Hello Autumn New Arrivals SUNNY Pool & Spa is a local family run business based in Cooroy specialising in domestic and commercial swimming pool and spa maintenance. Owners, Tim and Anna Russell moved her late last year and say they are absolutely loving Cooroy. “The community feel is amazing,” says Anna. “We had moved from a small country town near Toowoomba to Townsville but none of the family ever really felt settled, whereas we immediately felt right at home here. It’s a great little town to raise our family.” Tim is an easy going country boy, honest and reliable and a having worked in the pump business for many years knows what he’s doing. He can supply, inspect, repair and maintain all facets of the aftermarket pool industry including lighting, pumps, heating, cleaning, pool supplies and equipment. “LED lights are popular, use less power, are brighter and I’ve been replacing old dim or faulty lights that aren’t working with these. You save 80 per cent on power when you switch from old halogen lights. They look stunning at night and are the ultimate mood changer,” says Tim. “We also supply and install Evoheat pumps which are up to 600 per cent more energy efficient than any other heat pump on the market

and even come with a smartphone controller app. Anna takes care of the administration side of the business along with raising their two children Chloe and Travis who are attending Cooroy State School. “Our number one goal is customer satisfaction and making sure we provide a one stop shop service to our customers,” says Anna. “We pride ourselves on our work and are committed to making every client’s experience a memorable one (for all the right reasons).” Sunny Pool & Spa are QBCC Licenced and Insured to inspect pools and issue Safety Certificates. They cover the area from Gympie and inland to Caloundra. Everything needed is in the fully stocked van so everything can be done on the spot, including onsite free water testing. They also stock only quality merchandise from companies like Pool Pro, Spa Electrics, Davey Pool and Spa, and Pentair Pool. With the recent rain, Tim urges pool owners to get their pool checked to get the chemicals back in balance. “Pools turn green quick and it’s best to get on top of it fast,” he says. “You don’t want to end up with blackspot. So, if you need some advice or need a hand with your pool or pool equipment, give Sunny Pool & Spa a Freecall on 1800 786 693. Tim will be more than happy to pop around and help you out.

IT’S not every day an artist is asked to inspire the decision makers of the re-
gion. But that’s what Dale Leach hopes her commissioned painting of the Sun-
shine Coast does, in its new home in the offices of Sunshine Coast Regional Mayor Mark Jamieson. Tasked with the job of creating a ‘portrait’ of the region, the Cooroy-based artist said she wanted it to reflect the area geographically, but also energetically. “It had to be a bit playful, it also had to be fresh, fun and forward looking, without taking itself too seriously,” Ms Leach said. “And then balancing that with the acknowledgement and understanding that this
land also had many much older connections and names. It should remind the viewer that we live in a wonderful part of the world and as it’s custodians we should all treasure and protect it, for the delight of future generations.” I feel very honoured to have been selected to create this piece of work. When I heard that the painting was hanging in the mayor’s office I was delighted and I hope it gives everyone a feeling of joy as it was meant to do.” Based in Cooroy, Dale
Leach spends most of her time in her studio and selling her giftware at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre’s artisan store. Opportunity, she says, comes from all angles. And with a few projects on the horizon, Dale is looking forward to future gallery representation and an exhibition later this year. “This will be based on some pretty twisted fairy tales and nursery rhymes. I am hoping that I will have some pretty special 3D work included in the show as well,” she explained.

Pedestrian safety and traffic improvements for Pomona IMPROVEMENTS to pedestrian safety and traffic management around Pomona State School continue as Council starts work on a new bus turnaround facility and formalised parking spaces. Stage two of the Pomona pedestrian and safety improvements project will deliver a new bus turnaround on Station Street, adjacent to the Pomona Swimming Pool entrance. The project will see the direction of the oneway traffic through the existing car park reversed, plus new formalised parking spaces created on Station Street between Pine Street and the Pomona Swimming Pool entrance. Council’s Project Officer Jaro Bauleka said the improvements would create a safer traffic environment around the school. “Creating a designated bus turnaround will remove the need for the buses to drive through the existing car park to turn around. This will make it safer for children and much easier for the school bus to access the school,” Mr Bauleka said.
“The addition of formalised parking spaces around the school will provide a safer drop-off and pick-up zone for parents and their children.” The first stage of the project, completed last year, provided two all-ability access ramps for the carpark and school entrance, and improvements to the footpath around the existing bus stop. “Council is pleased to carry out these works to alleviate community safety concerns about the current car park and bus stop arrangement,” Mr Bauleka said. Prior to Council work starting, contractors will be on site to relocate Unitywater infrastructure. This work is scheduled for mid-March, with Council crews to start work, once the pipework relocation is complete, in mid-May. Council hopes to complete the new bus turnaround and car park changes in mid-July, weather permitting. There may be some minor traffic delays while work is under way.

‘Feeling Free’ exhibition WENDY Catlin’s first solo exhibition is being held at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery. The exhibition ‘Feeling Free to Play, Experiment and Risk’ opens 17 March in the Carriage Exhibition Room. The paintings are the result of learning to be playful in the studio, not be afraid of mistakes, and not take the creative process too seriously. “At the start an art project, there is no plan, no expectation - I just play and experiment with the paints and tools on hand,” says Wendy.
“You never knowing what is going to happen next or what shapes will appear. “This is my creative process which I find completely fascinating and takes me deep into a quiet space.” “Many of my paintings are abstract, acrylic and mixed media on wood panels. Each panel is different with multiple layers resulting in interesting textures. I am inspired by shapes in nature.” The official opening will be held on Saturday 17 March at 11:30 at the gallery.

dining & entertainment Did & Drum dance masters ‘Wild Marmalade’
AFTER epic shows at the Woodford Folk Festival, Wild Marmalade return to the Sunshine Coast to play at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Saturday 24 March, supported by Flaskas. Taking things to the next level, at all times, in all spaces, the Marmalade boys are poised to raise the roof and deliver the good vibeZ. Wild Marmalade are the pioneers of the didgeridoo and drum sound that is now a global phenomena. From their humble origins as street entertainers in the late ’90s, they have taken their unique brand of didgeridoo and drum dance music to stages, clubs and festivals the world over. Cirque du Soleil were one of the first to be interested in the Marmalade sound. Composer Benoit Jutras said after experiencing Wild Marmalade play for the first time that is it was ”... the most uplifting, energetic live performance I saw in my life... A unique experience.”
With a strong following in Japan, Australia and Europe, Wild Marmalade are the seed of a movement of people that have a taste for dance music played live with human energy and power. They regularly play at electronic dance music festivals such as Boom and Ozora and have toured Japan and Europe every year since 2000. Every performance is a unique journey crafted specifically for the time, place and audience. The band enter the show arena empty handed, with no set list. No plan whatsoever, just free minds in a sea of energy, ready to go. With an ethos of free-play improvisation, the trio create waves of energy that take the audience under their dance spell. In a world where nearly everything is ordered and rehearsed, Wild Marmalade deliver a wholehearted journey into the present moment with a kind of reckless abandon that defies categorisation. Uplifting, inspired, human powered dance music unparalleled in the world today. More than music that jumps out of the box, when the drone of the didgeridoo meets the fire of the drum and the passion of the guitar, then there is no box! Flaskas bring real live tribal acoustic sounds to the doorstep of your senses sharing a multi dimensional and cultural experience that will touch and invigorate your soul. Their trademark sound is a re-imagining they call ’Earth Rock’ – a high-power blend of alternative, coastal roots, funk, folk, blues and Indigenous music utilising native instruments. Through the bands unique magnetic connection and Chris’s thoughtful, philosophical lyrics and soul infused instrumentation-ship, Flaskas has earned a reputation for being a powerful motivating and uplifting act. Tickets: Pre-sale $25 (+ booking fee) through Oztix or at the Imperial Hotel (Ph: 5442 8811). $30 at the door. Doors open 7.30pm.

COOROY Amcal Pharmacy relocated to a bigger premise on 12th February 2018, to enable them to bring a new level of health advice and support to the local area, as part of a 290-strong network of Amcal pharmacies nationwide. The relocation gives the Cooroy community greater access to one of the country’s largest and most trusted pharmacy brands, a reputation built on friendly service, value for money and expert advice. Cooroy Amcal pharmacy owner, Basil Macreadie, said the whole team was excited about their new bigger location and the opportunities it will bring to both staff and the local community. “While Amcal Pharmacy is a big brand, our focus is very much on the local community, and we are excited to continue to have the support of a brand that has been at the forefront of Australian healthcare for 80 years. “Being part of the Amcal Pharmacy network means that we are able to offer Cooroy locals more health support services, including chronic disease management, medication reviews and health screenings,” Basil Macreadie said. “We choose to align with Amcal Pharmacy so we can help make health advice and support more available, affordable and accessible to those in the local area, and HbaA1c Testing, to assist with Diabetes Management and Risk Assessment Screening is just one initiative
we’re extremely proud of. Amcal spokesperson, Kurt O’Brien - National Retail Operations Manager, said the new Cooroy pharmacy location was a fantastic addition to their network and that locals should expect to see the same friendly faces with a refreshing new pharmacy offer. “We want to congratulate Basil and the team at Cooroy on their relocation and continue to help them engage members of the community who may need health advice, to highlight the important role pharmacists play in the Australian healthcare system.” Cooroy locals can experience health services including Medication Management and Reviews, Blood Pressure Monitoring, Weight Management and the support offered through Brandon and his team who specialise in the management of chronic conditions. I encourage community members to visit Basil, Brandon and their team to discuss any health concerns they may have,” he said. The cottage is a peaceful, welcoming and modern home set in three acres of beautiful gardens. The facility also houses our administrative base and is now providing day hospice care, outreach palliative care and counselling services. Following the completion of some modifications to the cottage, Katie Rose Cottage is again ready to welcome day respite guests and plans are well underway for roundthe-clock care later this year. Day respite is currently available two days a week although this may be extended if there is a demonstrated need. This respite service allows the guests to become familiar with the cottage, the staff and the care that is available. Importantly, it also gives their own carers time for things like shopping, resting, some well-deserved pam-
pering or just precious “me” time, whilst knowing that their loved one is being well looked after and cared for. Because of this expansion of services, Katie Rose Cottage is calling for people to volunteer as personal and general carers. Full training will be provided along with follow-up training and constant support from counsellors and the registered nurses – one of whom will be in attendance whenever there are guests in the cottage. If you are willing and able to become a carer, they would love to hear from you. The next training course will be one day a week over a period of four weeks in May. You can email Jane Woodrow at janew@katierosecottage.org.au or call the hospice on 5471 1468 for more information and to arrange an interview. This is a much needed service in our community and they rely heavily on volunteers and supporters to provide hospice care to people suffering from a terminal illness and support to their families and loved ones.

Shingles prevention
MAPLE Street Surgery’s health focus for the month of March is Shingles prevention Shingles is a reactivation of the chickenpox virus. It is a common condition, and Maple Street Surgery has seen several presentations of the virus recently. Unfortunately, there is no way to predict who will develop shingles, or how severe it will be. Common symptoms of Shingles include a painful blistering rash normally on one side of the body. Shingles can be prevented with a vaccination, but approximately 1 in 3 adults may develop shingles
in their lifetime. This risk is increased if you are over the age of 70. In addition to being very painful, Shingles can lead to serious complications including long term nerve pain scarring and vision loss, (source: Seqirus). Our nurses have worked hard to educate our patients on the risks associated with this painful disease. We have an eye catching display in our waiting room with lots of informative pamphlets for patients. As the risk of shingles is higher for patients over 70, we are targeting that age demographic. It’s easy to

get vaccinated. Call one of our great receptionists to make an appointment with one of our Doctors. The Doctor will take the patient through a pre-vaccination screening check list and confirm the patient is eligible to receive the vaccine. Following that one of our nurses will give you the vaccine. The best thing is – you only need the one vaccine for your lifetime! This is the first fully funded adult immunisation program in ten years. To be eligible for the free vaccine you need to be between 70 -79 years of age. Maple Street Surgery has a great team of six doctors ready to see new and old patients alike. We are also pleased to offer our patients a wide range of appointments as we are open 8am – 5pm Monday to Friday, and 830am – 1pm on Saturdays. Most locals may know that Dr David Kirkman established Maple Street Surgery over 30 years ago now, and he still Practices today. Along with Dr Kirkman, the Practice is lucky to have the experience and expertise of Dr Kathy Isbel, Dr Leon Venter, Dr Lawrence Hindley, Dr Aykari Lyn, and Dr Charlotte Byrne. We pride ourselves on being part of the local community, and offering excellent health service to all patients. Ph 5447 6644.
. LIFE in Balance Ayurveda & Yoga is moving to Cooroy. Heidi DeWald Veraa and Joe Veraa have been operating in Noosaville for the past 5 years, and have decided to move their business to Cooroy closer to home. They will be opening up their clinic for consultations and treatments (including massage, detoxes and relaxation treatments) from Wednesday, 14th March. Yoga and meditation classes will also start from that date, with both Heidi and Joe, as well as other local yoga teachers. The Diploma of Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultation and the Advanced Diploma of Ayurvedic medicine will also be offered here in Cooroy. Heidi said that the current Diploma students are just in the middle of their final exams, after 18 months of study. The next Diploma course will start in May. Students come from all over the Sunshine Coast, interstate as well as further afield from over-seas, to study Ayurveda. The Diploma is accredited by the Commonwealth Government and the Ayurveda College has been operating in Australia for the last 38 years and is a Registered Training Organisation, with the another campus operating in Byron Bay by the person who Heidi trained under, Professor Jason Chandler. Heidi said, “moving to Cooroy is like coming home, as we live at Black Mountain and we will be now be able to live and work in our own community”. They were forced to close their previous premises very suddenly, after asbestos fibres were detected in the
building. Joe and Heidi had to cancel yoga classes for some weeks, but were able to run the clinic and college temporarily from their Retreat Centre in Black Mountain. They are now finalising their move to new premises at 50 Kauri Street, Cooroy, right next door to the Copperhead Restaurant. “We have been really humbled by all the support we have had during this time” Joe said. “We have had people offering their premise to help out, and now we have had our Ayurveda and Yoga community help us with moving, painting the new premises, and all sort of other support. It has been amazing”. Ayurvedic medicine is India’s traditional system of healing and helps to restore and maintain healthy balance in the body. Everyone has their own Dosha or constitution, so Ayurveda treats everyone as an individual. It will help prevent disease, address anxiety, fatigue, depression, bad digestion, high blood-pressure, promote weight loss and allows the body to heal itself naturally from re-occurring pain and illness. Heidi and Joe said that they are really excited about moving to Cooroy. They are really looking forward to meeting even more of the local community and those wanting to take their health in their own hands to live longer and healthier lives. For further information: contact Heidi or Joe on 07 5455 5050 or yourlifeinbalance.com.au Life in Balance Ayurveda & Yoga opens in Cooroy on Wednesday 14th March at 50 Kauri Street

COOROY RAG
Why am I so thirsty? WITH lots of hot, humid days, I thought it would be a great time to remind you all about the importance of avoiding dehydration! But what is the big deal if you get dehydrated? Well, did you know that more than half of your body weight is water?! No wonder we feel that we are not able to survive for more than a few hours without having a drink! We need water for our bodies to function correctly, and without it, we will end up very sick ... here’s why!! Water is the biggest part of all the fluids that travel around in the body, and there is a large amount of water inside your cells too. Even your bones have a considerable amount of water in them. The water moves as part of the blood and lymph circulating through the body, giving food and oxygen to the cells and helping waste to be taken away. Water also carries digestive enzymes around our gastrointestinal tract, so that our food can be broken down. Anything that the body doesn’t want is also carried with water in the blood to the kidneys, which make urine, and some water stays in the gut, then comes out as faeces. The body also uses water to keep our core body temperature at about 37degrees Celsius. Water is in the fluids that keep joints moving smoothly Water is also the main component of saliva and mucous in the body. So what are the most common signs you may notice in a person who is dehydrated? Increased thirst Dry or sticky mouth Feeling tired or sleepy Deceased urine output (with urine looking a dark yellow colour) Sunken eyes Few/nil tear production in the eyes Headache
Dizziness Sunken fontanelles in an infant (the soft spot on the top of the head) Poor skin elasticity (skin sinks back slowly to its normal position when pinched) Oh you usually have a sports drink when you think you’re dehydrated? You’re wondering why you should pay extra to use the Oral Rehydration Salts from your pharmacy.. In order to rapidly rehydrate the body and retain the fluid that has been consumed, it is important to have the right levels of glucose (sugar) and electrolytes (salts, and in particular sodium) in the solution. Usually, sports drinks have lots of sugar (to make them taste good) and not enough sodium, therefore interfering in the rehydration process. Rehydration formulas from our LiveLife pharmacies are formulated to contain the correct concentration of these active ingredients. So here are some final tips on preventing dehydration: Avoid the hottest part of the day for sporting activities if possible Wear loose, light-coloured and comfortable clothing – remember that dark colours absorb heat Ensure you are wearing sunscreen and a hat that shades your head, neck, ears and face – sunburn may stop your body from being able to cool itself down properly Hydrate with water or oral rehydration salt therapy before, during and after sport/exercise/ alcohol consumption. Alcohol dehydrates the body, so avoid drinking any alcohol if you are going to be doing anything that may increase your risk of dehydration. Be alert and check for symptoms of heat stress and dehydration For more information contact your LiveLife pharmacy in Cooroy or Pomona.

Auction action AUCTIONS have become an increasingly popular way to sell property in Queensland. Purchasing a property at auction is on very different conditions to the more common private treaty contract process, so it’s extremely important to understand your obligations before the auction. Most importantly, if you are the successful bidder when buying a property at auction there is NO cooling off period and, unless the auction conditions specifically provide otherwise (which is rare), provided that the reserve has been met you will be unconditionally bound to sign and complete the contract from the fall of the hammer. The following checklist and information will ensure you can bid with confidence. 1. RESEARCH – Make sure you research the local market to get an understanding of the market and recent prices for comparable properties in the area you want to buy. 2. INSPECT the property BEFORE the auction– to ensure you understand what you are bidding on. 3. Property VALUATION - You may wish to engage a professional valuer to conduct a valuation of the property as a reference tool and safeguard against personal biases influencing your estimation the property’s worth. 4. INSPECTIONS/SEARCHES – It is good practice to request access for a building and pest inspection where a recent inspection report from a licenced inspector is not provided by the Seller’s Agent. Similarly, any searches you would usually run to investigate the property have to be ordered through your solicitor with enough time to review the results prior to the Auction (at least 14 days is a good guide for most investigations). If you do not conduct searches and discover after the auction that, for example, the land is soon to be resumed for a new road or is subject to encumbrances that will prevent your intended use
www.cooroyrag.com.au
of the land, you might be bound to complete the purchase anyway. 5. Have an experienced LAWYER look over the CONTRACT of sale well before the auction – they will be able to explain and clarify the terms and conditions to you and offer advice. In some cases you may be able to negotiate changes to the contract before the auction. 6. FINANCE – If you are the successful bidder you will be required to pay the deposit immediately when you sign the unconditional (legally binding) contract. It is important that you have pre- approved finance in order and are prepared to write a cheque/ effect transfer of the Deposit (often 10% of the Purchase Price) on the spot on the day of the auction. Acceptable methods of payment should be confirmed with the Agent in advance. 7. BIDDING – The auctioneer can accept bids on behalf of the Seller and may even make bids themselves on behalf of the Seller up until the reserve price has been reached. The auctioneer must announce that a bid is a “vendor bid” and such an announcement tells you there is a reserve price that has not yet been reached. If you are too emotionally invested you are able to get someone to bid on your behalf so you don’t “go nuts” on the day or overpay for lack of a good poker face?. To ensure fairness to both buyers and sellers at auction, legislation in Queensland requires all bidders to be registered to bid (provide name and address and proof of identity). False bidding is illegal in Queensland. Conveyancing in Queensland can be more complicated than in other states of Australia so it’s important to always use an experienced property lawyer to ensure a smooth transaction. SPM Law will be happy to help with your next property purchase. Call us today for an obligation free quote on 5440 4800.

34 Queen Street, COORAN Bed 5; Bat 2; Car 3; 3 acres; pool Where else would you find a 5-bedroom, 2-bathroom home on 3 acres - with a selfcontained cottage and the perfect workfrom-home set-up - right in town? With everything you need within walking distance - including schools - plus the convenience of town water and mains sewerage, it’s definitely a winner. Incredibly peaceful and private, with only the sound of visiting birds, the main residence is stunning. Located right in town at the end of a concrete driveway, the main residence offers a great mix of accommodation, with open plan living plus formal dining. You’ll love the cathedral ceilings, exposed beams and hand-crafted stone feature walls in the living areas. Timber windows and French doors feature throughout and there’s a cosy slow combustion wood heater to warm both the lounge and dining room. The kitchen is spacious and stylish, with hardwood timber bench tops, gas cooktop, Blanco dishwasher, pantry, ceiling fan, breakfast bar and meals area. The master bedroom is very spacious with a large walk-in robe that opens to a private courtyard. The ensuite bathroom benefits from natural light with the large windows overlooking the private garden courtyard. There are a separate shower and bath, double vanity and separate toilet.
In a separate wing, you’ll find the guest suite with an ensuite bathroom opening to a private deck. There are two more bedrooms here, currently used as a home office and separate media room. There’s a gorgeous mix of original, vintage Queenslander timber doors, plus ceiling fans, air-conditioning and a handy guest powder room on entry. Step outside and you’ll discover - a 20metre saltwater lap pool with outdoor shower, covered entertainment area, pool cover and automatic pool cleaner. The large east-facing deck overlooking the pool is just perfect for relaxing and entertaining. But still there’s more: a separate, selfcontained multipurpose cottage comprising 2 bedrooms, separate lounge and meals area, kitchen, combined bathroom/laundry plus FIVE more rooms currently used for a home business. There’s also a large carport with a lockup workshop with bench and storeroom with shelves. If you’re keen to grow your own veggies you’ll have no problem here, as the soil is fertile. In fact, it already offers a fine collection of fruit trees, including bananas, mango, Jackfruit, avocado, macadamia and orange. THIS year marks a huge year for Touch Football. We celebrate the 50th anniversary of the birth of this sport in Australia and its 40th year in the Noosa district. Touch Football is a unique sport which can be and is played by both genders from youngsters to the young at heart. Our local competition for juniors and seniors has been up and running for a couple of weeks, even if the weather hasn’t been kind! The first senior representative event on the calander this year was the 2018 National Touch League. Players from all around the country descended on Coff’s Harbour from the 7th – 10th of March to contest the event. Noosa Touch was proud to have a local contingent of players, coaches and managers heading interstate, into blues territory, to participate against some of the strongest players in the game in various teams and across age divisions from Under 20’s to Over 50’s. We would like to acknowledge Glenn, Mandy, Penny, Shar, Renee, Jason Mac, Shelly, Craig, Dani, Cassie, Isaac, Chris (Jordo), Nikki, Steph, Jake, Ali and Tim On a junior representative level, Noosa Touch held the Sunshine Coast School selection trials for Under 15 and Under 18 last Thursday. In hot sunny conditions and fields still quite damp from recent rain, a high standard of play was on show from kids across the region. All of our local high
schools were represented and should be proud of their students whom all played well and showed great sportsmanship on the day. Thank you to the schools for encouraging the sport and for staff who continue to give up their time for the students. Congratulations to the players that were named to go to the Queensland Titles to be held in Townsville and Rockhampton later in the year. To those who weren’t successful this time around you still have plenty of years ahead, Touch Football is a game for life.

AT 8:30 on Sunday Mornings the Chinese Kung Fu and Tai Chi Academy of Australia is holding a regular Tai Chi class at the Badminton Courts in Emerald Street Cooroy. Designed to take advantage of the spacious hall, the peaceful setting and ample parking, the class offers accredited and experienced Tai Chi instruction. Presented by Stephen Locke, a Tai Chi student with Grand Master Henry Sue for over 35 years, the class will provide a low impact and gentle exercise format suitable for all people and all ages. The hour-long classes will initially look at the Yang-Gar style of Tai Chi- the most well known and popular forms of Tai Chi. However, the club can also cater to the more serious student who might be interested in Tai Chi weaponry and the Chen style of Tai Chi. Above all, the class intends to cater for those seeking a gentle, effective and health-based exercise programme. Instruction is held in a safe and friendly environment. It is designed to create enjoyment, healthy activity and fun for an hour on Sunday mornings. The Chinese Tai Chi Academy of Australia invites all people to come along and give it a go. So what is Tai Chi? Tai Chi originated as a Chinese martial art and a system to enhance overall health. Today however Tai Chi is increasingly known for its therapeutic health benefits. Once only available to the aristocracy and the sons of rich merchants, today Tai Chi is widely practised throughout the world. Recently it has been incorporated into the Olympic Games. Tai Chi is often seen as a graceful pattern of slow moving and interconnected shapes or movements. These are designed to enhance overall
health. The movements involve gentle isolation of joints and muscle tissue. Often called “soft” exercise, Tai Chi practice is suitable for all ages and is beneficial as a preventative health measure and as a tool for rehabilitation. The practise of Tai Chi on a regular basis, according to Dr. Nat Yuen, co-founder of the Chinese Kung-Fu and Tai Chi Academy of Australia and a leading Hong Kong cardiologist, brings many health benefits. Tai Chi’s emphasis on gentle movement and deeper breathing has two primary benefits. Firstly, Tai Chi helps increase the oxygenation of the blood and increases blood circulation in the body. Secondly, it improves the gastrointestinal dynamics of the body. In turn this has many benefits such as improved bowel movement and intestinal absorption. Consequently Tai Chi promotes improved function of internal organs, improved mental relaxation and concentration and above all improved vitality. So come along and enjoy a refreshing and invigorating Sunday morning hour of gentle exercise. It’s a perfect way to set up the day and still have time to enjoy all that Cooroy’s ambiance has to offer. Participants are advised to wear suitable clothing and footwear. Classes commence on the25th March 2018.Bookings can be made c/o Stephen Locke ph. 0409 457 295 or Mark Rutherford on 0408 641 323 E-mail stephen.locke5@bigpond.com OR Arrive at 8.30am at 26 Emerald Street Cooroy ( Cooroy Badminton centre ) from the 25th of March. Tuition fees are $10 per class or $50 for an introductory 6week course. Grand Master Henry Sue.

COOROY RAG
Dragons reach for higher peaks SATURDAY (3rd March) a small group of intrepid members of the Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Union Club set off in the early morning light to ascend Mt Coolum for the first of the season team building events. There were fifteen (15) members in all, ranging in ages from five to 65. Fully kitted out in good walking shoes, sun protection, water bottles and plenty of mosquito repellent they were able to get to the top of the mountain in approx. 45 min, going at a steady pace and enjoying the magnificent scenery that got better the higher they walked . At the summit the walkers had a magnificent view of the coast from Noosa to Maroochydore and all places in between. The younger members of the group were extremely interested in some of dreamtime stories giving some explanations regarding the formation of Mt Coolum, Mudjimba, Maroochy River and the like. To top off a great morning all members of the party drove to Coolum Beach to enjoy a BBQ breakfast in the park just north of the surf lifesaving clubhouse. Those who were prepared with togs and surfboards also enjoyed a quick surf in the crystal waters of the Pacific Ocean. All who participated thoroughly enjoyed themselves and are eagerly looking forward to future social activities that the club will organise in 2018. Club President Doug Toms
