New life for old police uniforms Old police uniforms are finding new life in the hands of the ever creative and resourceful Yvonne Pattinson of Cooroy, mum of Chief Superintendent Debbie Platz, Training and Development Police. Police shirts and trousers that once identified a person as an upholder of the law and bore witness to the best and worst of society are being disassembled and recreated as sweet little dresses, skirts, shirts and shorts for children in remote communities. A lifelong sewer, Ms Pattinson said the idea was hatched between her and her daughter about 18 months ago. “I had a friend visiting an orphanage in Borneo and decided to make up some little dresses for her to give to the children. Around the same time, I had a heap of Debbie’s old police shirts that I was cutting down into little police shirts for pre-schoolers to use as dress-ups,” Ms Pattinson said. “When Debbie saw the little dresses, she thought it would be a great idea to use the uniforms to make children’s clothing for Australian communities.” Since then, discarded police shirts have been pouring in and Ms Pattinson has made hundreds of items of clothing, all thoughtfully designed to be individual but still related to policing. “The blue is a beautiful colour and you couldn’t get better material to work with. I’ve never made two items the same. “Each one is unique with different coloured buttons or trim, or a motif to make them a bit different. I try to make each one of equal value so nobody feels like their dress is not as nice as another child’s.” Ms Pattinson’s clothes have found their way to many remote communities including Coen, Weipa, Napranum and Mapoon as well as Papua New Guinea’s Saibai and Boigu islands. Chief Superintendent Platz said it was a sensational way to make good use of a valuable resource. “We have to destroy the uniforms when we are finished with them so people were chopping them up or burning them, but the material is too good to just throw out,” Chief Superintendent Platz said. “Once Mum had used up my old uniforms other police started donating theirs and staff from across the QPS and PSBA donated ribbons, beads, buttons and other items to help turn the clothes into designer outfits. “The clothes are a real treat for kids who don’t have a lot, and it’s a good way of strengthening relationships in disadvantaged communities. And it keeps Mum off the street,” she quipped. Credit: Police Bulletin, Queensland Police Service
Boost for business mentors NOOSA Council has approved $5000 worth of financial support for a local business mentoring program. Council approved the funding for the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland Noosa branch to support its Business Mentoring Noosa program. Mayor Tony Wellington said the monies would help continue the successful program for the remainder of 2016. “The CCIQ Noosa mentoring program has been tremendously successful since its inception in 2012, with around 200 businesses taking part so far and another 54 currently going through the program,” Cr Wellington said. “Mentoring sees businesspeople benefit from others’ expertise and experience. In this way they can better assess how their business is operating and thus make changes for the better. It also provides a forum for brainstorming and future planning, making the Business Mentoring Noosa program a fantastic tool to assist local economic development.” Council provided the funds from its economic development budget.

Rural Fire Brigade - 21 years serving the community BLACK Mountain Rural Fire Brigade celebrated 21 years of serving the community with a BBQ attended by approximately 60 people including QFES, current members of the brigade, original members who helped to set up the brigade, members of the Cooroy Auxilary Fire Brigade, members of the SES, and their families. Area Director of QFES, Gary Seaman, congratulated the brigade on all the work they have done and commented on the good mix of brigade members - young people mixed with more experienced members. Don Pigedon, one of the original members, spoke of the beginnings of the brigade, and the original station built on
Cooroy-Belli Creek Rd, and how the current station on Mary River Rd is better placed as a more central location to the large area that the brigade covers. The original station was built soon after the formation of the brigade in 1995, but the brigade had to move so the new station was built on Mary River Road and opened in 2009. The brigade has about 30 active members and trains regularly on the 1st & 3rd Thursday of the month at 6pm. The brigade is very active in the community fighting bush fires, doing control burns to assist mitigation of fuel hazards, and assisting the community in disaster situations - all as volunteers!

PEDESTRIAN access to and from Cooroy’s newest residential development Greenwood Grove, will improve significantly following the opening of a brand new two metre wIde, wheelchair friendly footbridge over Cooroy Creek. The bridge was funded by the developers of Greenwood Grove to the tune of $400,000. The developer of Greenwood Grove have also contributed with a multi-million dollar upgrade to the Garnet Street crossing over Cooroy Creek which will free up traffic leading to the Cooroy Sports Centre and local industrial estate. Greenwood Grove spokesperson Rob Midgley said the new infrastructure was an important asset for the local community as Cooroy continues to grow in popularity. “Greenwood Grove is currently the largest residential development in the Noosa Shire and with strong sales recorded over the past year, it’s important that infrastructure is upgraded in order to meet future population growth. “Garnet Street is one of the busiest streets in town as it provides direct access to local shops, the school and sporting facilities. Greenwood Grove will continue to bring
more residents to the area so it is important that we provide current and future residents will quality local infrastructure,” Mr Midgley said. Mr Midgley said with average size lots of 856 sqm, buyers are embracing the opportunity to build a large home for a growing family with room for a pool, shed or an extended outdoor alfresco area. “Stage one of Greenwood Grove sold out in record time and this has partly been driven by the quality of the estate along with the lack of large, flat, fully serviced lots within close proximity to Cooroy’s main street which is only a leisurely five minutes stroll away. “Residents have easy access to local conveniences including the IGA supermarket and other retail shops, the post office, pub, gallery and other local attractions. Noosa Heads is just 25 minutes down the road and If you need to get to the city, Cooroy also has a direct train service to and from Brisbane. “With prices commencing from $228,500, we encourage interested buyers to call our office on 5447 7198 or visit www.greenwoodgrove.com.au for more information,” Mr Midgley added.
New $1.9 million Eumundi bridge complete THE final touches have been added to a new $1.9 million bridge in Eumundi, with Mayor Mark Jamieson joining local councillors and community representatives for the official opening. Mayor Mark Jamieson
said the concrete bridge replaced a failing timber bridge and improved the safety of motorists and pedestrians. This new bridge, which has an estimated life span of 100 years, is almost 6m wider, with two 3.5m traffic lanes, 1.2m road shoulders
and a 2m pedestrian walkway on the eastern side. “This is major investment for Eumundi to improve a well-used travel route and safety, which I’m sure will be appreciated by the residents and the thousands of visitors to the town,” said
Mayor Jamieson. Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson said council had worked closely with community representatives to include a feature balustrade and nearby shelter. “Council has also constructed a welcome state-
ment nearby using recycled bridge timbers and a shelter to provide a rest area for people who walk along Eumundi Range Road.” The new bridge was part of council’s $183 million 2015-16 Capital Works Program.

COOROY RAG
Cooroy – a pleasant place to live Around the town I’m probably considered a maturing old stager, But deep at heart I’m really an observant senior teen-ager. I’ve always wanted to say this before I gave up rhyming, But I couldn’t seem to ever get the right timing. Cooroy has been so good to me, for that my heartfelt gratitude, To find a town where all display such a pleasant attitude. But what I have witnessed, and continually enjoy, Is the happiness and goodness of the folk here in Cooroy. You can honestly agree that shopping is a pleasure, Wherever you go, you are not under any pressure. You are served politely, and smilingly, possibly by name, Throughout the town, that friendly feeling is the friendly same. Help is invariably offered, and if needed, they go to endless trouble, And the traffic, heavy at times, doesn’t make the citizens grumble. In fact the driving is quite simple, the traffic seems to flow, Everyone seems happy, no matter where you go. If you think a bit I’m sure you’ll agree that I am happily right, That Cooroy is a pleasant town, some would even call it a delight. If people behaved as nations do, they’d all be in straightjackets Jim Dunstan
Letter to the editor I WOULD just like to say on behalf of the Rotary Club of Cooroy and myself, what a privilege it was to be a part of this mornings Anzac Day 2016 Dawn Service held at Cooroy. The absolute quiescence of respect from every person attending was exemplary. The microphone had broken down, during the whole service there was no amplification, this did not hinder, in fact it made the service even more special. This silence endorsed the deep feeling, sincerity and empathy to our fallen service men. May I thank the RSL of Cooroy and Ian Whisker for a superb tribute of their 100 years Memorial Service. If this has happened to you too please ring Council before someone is seriously injured or killed. BRICKBATS to the young Cooroy High School idiot/idiots who think it is clever to scream out at Golfers across the road from Cooroy High School as players start their downswing. Your childish prank is not only stupid, but it is dangerous, motorists travelling the busy feeder road to the Highway can hear your screaming and that serves to divert their attention from the roadway. If your immature nonsense caused an accident you and your family would never live it down. BOUQUET a-plenty for the lovely lady who presented me with such a sweet ‘thank you’ when I enquired if I had left enough room for her car when I parked next to her at the IGA. A thoughtful gesture for an appreciative old man. I was so overcome that I left half my shopping behind, to be rescued by those attentive IGA girls. BOUQUET to the gentleman who directed traffic for me to get out of the IGA carpark. You made my day. Plan to improve koalas’ plight RESIDENTS can have a say on Council’s plan to protect the Shire’s koalas. The Draft Noosa Shire Koala Conservation Plan will be open for comment at Council’s Your Say Noosa website, for six weeks. Hard copies of the Plan will be available for viewing and comment at Noosaville and Cooroy libraries and the mobile library. ‘Pop-ups’ at libraries will be manned by Council officers and Coun-
cillors, at various times, where residents can ask questions and have their say. Mayor Tony Wellington said the draft plan followed extensive consultation with key stakeholders, such as koala protection and environment groups, plus members of the public. It aims to protect koala habitat on both private and public land, improve education, community awareness, data collection and

It will also consider targeted wild dog control in koala hotspots. “The Draft Noosa Shire Koala Conservation Plan details more than 20 actions to help achieve these aims,” says Cr Wellington. “These include an audit of current koala infrastructure such as protective fencing. Council support for University of the Sunshine Coast local koala research will be ongoing. “The Draft Plan also pro-

The Draft Noosa Shire Koala Conservation Plan follows on from Council’s adoption of a koala policy last year. “The actions we take to protect koalas will also improve biodiversity in the local area by assisting non-target species,” Cr Wellington said. “We look forward to hearing from residents across the Shire. It can be as simple as reporting koala sightings to Council.” To read the Draft Noosa Shire Koala Conservation Plan 2016, find out more and have a say, visit libraries, visit yoursay. noosa.qld.gov.au or telephone Council on 5329 6500.
news Community Banking … please explain! Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy Life is all about choices. One of them is a choice of where you do your banking, and everyone has to do that somewhere. Each edition I suggest how to take control of your finances in any number of ways through any number of banking products. But today, I want to share why we come to work each day and why we’re growing with our community. The Cooroy Community Bank branch opened in November 2002. Of course we’re sharing in our success as our growth continues, but many locals still don’t know what having the Cooroy Community Bank branch in town actually means for them. Locally, our branch is giving the Noosa hinterland a real say in its own future. We believe successful customers and successful communities create a successful bank – in that order. As we work to provide banking products and services for
our customers, we consider the bigger picture. We have branches right across the Sunshine Coast and provide our communities with more than just quality banking services. Our branches deliver employment opportunities for local people and keep local capital in our communities. Our branch team is passionate about our work, our community and proud to be part of the more than 310 Community Bank branches across the country have returned more than $148 million to date. This result tells us we’re continuing to feed into the prosperity of communities not from
them. In Cooroy, we continue to partner with our community, sporting groups, schools and organisations in assisting the delivery of projects and their messages. By the end of this financial year donations from our Cooroy Community Bank branch will total more than $570,000. That’s just a quick snapshot of what Community Banking is all about. Our team is always happy to share even more of our story with you, deliver the right advice and the products you need. Cooroy Potters Group members take a final look over their exhibition artworks. L-R Monika Juengling, Julie Wall, Pam Walsh, Robin Taylor, Pottery Studio Ceramics Technician Mal Butterworth (at back), Harry Crap and Lin Dillon. A GROUP of hinterland potters have looked to their community for inspiration in their upcoming exhibition which opens this Friday (13th May) at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre. The exhibition, titled Belonging and Association of Place, saw the Cooroy Potters’ Group look closely at what connects them with their local environment. Monika Juengling has drawn on elements of the current Cooroy Butter Factory site and its indig-
enous history as a traditional meeting place, with her works titled “Sound of the Elders”. Another artist Sandy Viney has looked to the patterns in the night sky and worked from photographs to bring those images into her glazing. Long-term group member Pam Walsh, has drawn on images of local landmarks and said initial preparation for the exhibition saw the group talk about their connection to place and what it meant to them.
“We are excited about this exhibition which is deeply personal to each of us,” Pam said. “Belonging to community and associating with place are key ideals of the Cooroy Potters and our feelings of pride in belonging to a welcoming hinterland community are echoed in our diverse creations”. The Cooroy Potters group has been meeting informally for ten years, and more regularly over the last four years. The community potters meet each Friday at the Butter Factory Pot-

Preparation and readiness in the weeks leading up to settlement can be the difference between make or break for first home buyers. Have you been looking for the home of your dreams or an investment property for a while now? If you’re across the costs associated with homeownership, the government rebates available and your loan has been pre-approved by your lender - you’re part way there. The finishing line draws near when you locate the ideal place and put an offer on the table. But, what takes place before you close the deal and collect the keys? We list the steps leading up to settlement, but some of these may differ stateto-state and when buying off the plan. The holding deposit If you purchase a property via a private treaty sale and the seller accepts your offer, you’ll often pay a small holding deposit. You’ll get this back if someone ‘gazumps’ you,
which is when someone makes a higher offer and the seller accepts. The holding deposit shows you’re serious, but it doesn’t secure the property, which may remain on the market until contracts are formally exchanged. If you buy at auction, a holding deposit will not be required but your main deposit will be, so you’ll need a bank cheque or your cheque book ready to go. When purchasing at auction, you’re fully committed to buying the property the second you put forward the highest bid and contracts are exchanged. This is why finalising any building/pest inspections and knowing what is required from your lender is important ahead of auction day. Exchanging contracts You and the seller enter into a legally binding agreement when both parties sign and exchange contracts. If it’s a private treaty sale, often there’s a cooling-off period of several days. If you haven’t already, this gives you a small window to get formal loan
approval from your lender and complete any building/ pest inspections, or request a strata report if you’re buying a townhouse or apartment. Formal loan approval You may have attained pre-approval on a loan but you’ll need formal approval before the end of the cooling-off period. Your lender will organise a valuation of the property as part of the process and will confirm whether lender’s mortgage insurance is required. Usually you’ll only pay this if you’re borrowing more than 80% of the property purchase price. Building and contents insurance If your lender formally approves your finances, they may also require that you take out building insurance from the date contracts are exchanged to safeguard their and your interest in the property. If you’re buying an apartment, you’ll need to arrange a Certificate of Currency from the Body Corporate’s insurer to make sure the property is ad-
equately covered. The cooling-off period If the building/pest inspection raises serious concerns or your finances are knocked back, you can pull out of the contract before the cooling-off period expires, but it’s likely you’ll lose your holding deposit. If all goes well, you’ll sign on the dotted line and pay the full deposit - typically a minimum of 10% to 20% of the purchase price. Remember, cooling-off periods do not apply if you’re buying at auction. Conveyancing Conveyancing is the legal transfer of property from the seller to the buyer. As part of this process your solicitor or conveyancer will do most of the legal legwork, including Transfer of Land, Identification of Certificate of Title, stamp duty application and the Authority to Proceed to Settlement. They will contact the bank, the seller’s solicitor and any relevant parties to arrange dates, times and the necessary payments. A pre-settlement inspection may also be organised to
ensure the property is in the same condition as when it was purchased. Settlement Normally settlement will be 30 to 90 days1 after contracts are exchanged. At this time, you’ll pay the balance of the purchase price (including stamp duty) using your loan, or outright if you have the funds. Then, voila – the keys are yours and you can celebrate the successful purchase of your very first home! Probus Club of Cooroy THE Probus Club of Cooroy has planned another busy month with a dinner outing to Serge’s in Pomona, an introduction to the game of croquet in Noosaville and a coffee morning at Rosie’s in Cooroy. These outings keep our members active, social and well fed while at the same time support the local businesses. Our May Probus meeting enjoyed a chat from Ron McCarthy, the CEO and brains behind The Hub in Opal Street, Cooroy. He spoke of his long and distinguished career associated with the 3 day equestrian events and Australia’s dominance in this extreme sport. A timely topic leading into the Rio Olympics and following the recent tragic deaths of two teenage competitors. Anyone interested in joining the Probus Club of Cooroy should contact Lyn and John Ph 5485 0415 or come along to a meeting held on the first Monday of each month at the Anglican Church hall in Miva Street, Cooroy. Garnet Street update
QUICK Update on the progress (or lack of) of the road closure at Garnet Street. Noosa Council are in constant contact with Shadforths who are actually carrying out the work and due to a series of delays caused by, amongst other things, weather and vandalism - the last completion date of 17th April has now been put back to approximately end of May. Obviously this is still dependent on weather and also there is some tie-up with Unity Water that needs to be sorted out. Patience is a virtue. Cooroy – Heart of Noosa Country
Permaculture meeting PERMACULTURE Noosa Meeting 19th May 2016 Time: 7pm for 7.30pm- 9pm Where: Cooroy State Primary School Hall, 59 Elm Street, Cooroy Permaculture Noosa monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of each month. Arrive at 7pm for a market place where we share surplus home grown produce and plants by giving, exchanging or selling. Entry is a gold coin donation for non-members. The meeting begins at 7.30pm and the night is complete with a “bring a plate” shared supper at 9pm. All welcome. 1. Permaculture project in Vanuatu Presenter – Daniele Bettini Daniele Bettini, who attained his PDC at PRI Sunshine Coast with Tom Kendall in 2013, has been instrumental in managing a new project in Vanuatu using his knowledge and skills. He will be giving us a short presentation on the developments of the project. “Kastom Permaculture is a self-help aid project meaning a project which supports, sustains the local knowledge through the visitors’ knowledge. 2. Care Farming and how to distribute the Abundance Presenter: Elaine Bradley (Mary Valley Country Harvest Co-op) Elaine was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2012 to visit the US to see how small farmers worked together and collaborated. With ideas she gained Elaine has been instrumental in supporting and inspiring local growers to network and work together. She is currently an active director of Mary Valley Country Harvest Coop and assists local farmers to distribute local produce through Dagun Market and a
food box distribution system. This is the 3rd presentation in the four month Permaculture Noosa (PCN) series on: Healthy soil and the critical impact on the health of the species it supports. ie. plants, livestock and ultimately humans. With past farming practices having left a legacy of degraded soils as well as the Australian soils being poor to begin with, a lot of work needs to be done to repair and rebuild our soils. Through the knowledge and tools we have through permaculture, we are able to control what we do to and for the soil. The presenters and discussions at the meetings are considering the role of healthy soil, the impact of good practice on the wider community and the opportunities for each of us to contribute and be rewarded for our efforts. Permaculture Noosa is an ideal group to be a part of for anyone new to the area and setting up a garden. There are many members who have skills and knowledge to share and others who are new to the concepts. Seed Savers Meeting–9.30am Thursday 12th May The next Seed Savers Meeting… will be held at: ”Noosa Namaste” Restaurant 2 Memorial Avenue, Pomona There will be lots of talking about seeds and plants, the how-to’s, the why’s and why nots. There are always questions and answers. You can also try out some seed processing or seed packaging (this is an essential support for the Seed Bank) with plenty of help if it’s new for you. We hope to see you there.

pomona Meals on Wheels meeting the needs of the community
COOROY RAG
DID you know that there is a Meals on Wheels in our region and that we service Cooroy? Pomona and Districts
Meals on Wheels is a not for profit organisation which began operations in 1989. Operating out of the com-
mercial kitchen set-up in the Pomona School of Arts building we deliver healthy meals to our clients’ home not only to ensure their nu-
Cooran Garden Club ON April 29, 1992, the initial meeting of the Cooran Garden Club was held with approx. 11 founding members. The club’s foundation came about because the members previously attended the Cooroy Garden Club. They found it was quite formal – meetings, fees, full official procedures – minutes, agenda, speakers, competitions and judging. This entailed them spending 3-4 hours attending the meeting. In those days, these ladies( mostly ladies then) had to be home when the children came home from school and had to prepare meals etc for the workers in the family. The ladies decided they wanted a less formal arrangement- no fees, no meetings & agendas etc and no competitions. The relaxed atmosphere would be conducive to the sharing of ideas, tips and plants and/ or cuttings. Two of the main driving forces were Audrey Ayers and Hazel Treloar. All they needed was a spokesperson to make announcements each Garden Club(GC) day and to organise venues for the next GC day. Meetings were to be on the last Monday of each month (except December). And the duration of each meeting was until approx 12 noon. The original membership quickly grew to 50+ members. Because of the lack of formality, the Cooran GC soon became the
GC to which to belong. The less formal atmosphere led to the formation of many long lasting friendships. On April 25, 2016, the Cooran GC met at Fred & Audrey Ayers’ garden in Cooran. This was the 24th Annual meeting of the club. Because Audrey was an original member who still regularly attended meetings. The only other member with such a claim was Hazel Treloar. Hazel and Ron had been regulars until late 2015 when ill health prevented this. The members decided that these two original members should be presented with something in recognition of their long term attendance and their meritorious service to the club. So a floral arrangement for each was obtained and, as well, as a laminated award was prepared. These were presented to both ladies & their spouses on the day. Age and ill health are now limiting their ability to attend and provide venues for the club. A large happy group enjoyed the day wandering round Audrey’s garden. A number left with plants & cuttings too. Anyone wishing to join a friendly, casual club can contact Peter (54851472) to find out where the next meeting will be held. All GC meetings are on the last Monday of each month.
Pomona Indoor Bowls Each Wednesday morning, the Indoor Bowlers meet in the Pomona Memorial Hall. Bowling commences at 9.00 am. Because of age and illness, a few of our member can no longer attend each week, so there is room for new members. The only requirement is the wearing of flat soled shoes. Assistance and training can be provided for those who have never played previously. A try out day can be provided free of charge. If you decide to continue, an weekly Admission of $2 applies. If you then feel you’d like to continue playing, an Annual Membership fee of $2 applies. Our club is a friendly place with lots of laughter and many friendships formed
there. To give everyone an equal chance at winning, the games controllers have a dozen or so cards from which one is chosen each week. So even if you’ve had a horrible day you might be the prize winner if the card is Lowest Score. New players are encouraged to come early (from 8.00 am) to enable them to practise before the usual 3 games begin at 9 am. All players are asked to be there by 8.45 to enable the organisation of the teams for the day. A cuppa is taken after the second game. Usually bowls are completed by 11.30 – 12.00. Interested prospective players can either just turn up at the Memorial Hall at approx 8.30 on Wednesdays or you can contact Peter on 54851472.
Pomona School Reunion A school reunion for all surrounding districts of Pomona will be held on Saturday 28th May 2016 at the Pomona Show Grounds from 10.30am till late. Morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and barbeque dinner available. For more details contact Jan on 0401 348 896.

The Soldier’s Wife OVER the past 18 months, a small group of Queensland songwriters have embarked on a truly remarkable songwriting journey – to tell the stories of women whose partners have served in conflict over the past 60 years. The depth of experience was deep with those wives’ partners having served their country in conflicts from WW2 until the present day deployments through Asia, the Pacific and The Middle East. The songwriters have talked to almost 100 women – aged from 25 to 104 years old. From varying backgrounds and conflicts, their stories all have similar themes of love, of loss, of existence of upheaval through varying deployments, of fear for their partners whilst on deployment, of anger for the way their partners have been treated from some conflicts and suffering through their partners PTSD (and often through the children’s PTSD that is passed on) and their strength in raising their children – often on their own. Those wives opened their hearts and bared their souls – talking about their experiences. From there, each of the artists went away and turned those stories into a group of personal, passionate and inspirational songs. The songs have since been performed live at a range of venues including the Brisbane Powerhouse, Woodford Folk Festival and most recently a sold out performance at the Sydney Opera House and Canberra Street Theatre – giving audiences the chance to hear these powerful stories first hand. Now The Soldier’s Wife will be showing at the Majestic Theatre in Pomona on Friday, June 10. Doors/bar and food open at 6pm. Show at 8pm. LOCAL musician and member of the Sunshine Coast’s Davonski Concert Orchestra, Iain McLean, has spent many hours organising a special music concert to be held at the Good Shepherd Lutheran hall at Noosaville on Sunday, May 22nd starting at 1.30pm. All the proceeds go to the Sunshine hospice formally known as Katie Rose Cottage. Iain has put together a broad range of music for the afternoon and has convinced the internationally known Esk choir to make the journey to perform their music in song. Solo violinist Touki Wood accompanied by
Tim Williams will also be on stage and laconic poet from Woodford Festival, Ian McKay will provide his quirky wit through words. Iain said “this hospice service is too important for the Sunshine Coast and we must do everything to support its reopening and provide our ongoing support when it does” Tickets for this enjoyable musical afternoon can be purchased at all Sunshine Hospice Op shops including the Tewantin shop in the Atrium, the Cooroy shop in Maple Lane and the also from the LiveLife Sunrise Beach Pharmacy.

NOOSA District State High School Year 11 student Stuart Chapman competed in Round 1 of the Australian Off-Road Racing Championship at Mildura Victoria, on the last weekend of the school holidays. Stuart drove a Mitsubishi Triton in Performance 2WD class over a 600 km course – 6 laps 100 km long. The minimum entry age is 16 years, however, Stuart was given dispensation by CAMS to race as his 16th birthday was the week following the championship. Stuart finished the gruelling race in first position in his vehicle class, beating the current National champion. The classes are determined by vehicle class – age has no relevance. He placed 20th outright out of a field of 81 competitors who have been competing for numerous years. Clayton Chapman & navigator Adam McGuire entered in the teams Extreme 4WD Triton. They had an amazing prologue time placing 11th outright & their lap times were very impressive – “punching well above their weight” so to speak. A couple of minor problems prevented them from completing the 600kms but they managed to get 2nd in class. Clayton & Adam have been competing in the AORC since 2007 over which time they have been National champions in Production 4WD class and also in Extreme 4WD class. There are 2 more championship rounds for the year. The Chapmans Offroad Team head out to Alice Springs for the Finke Desert Race in June where both Clayton & Stuart will compete.

Should my child see a Podiatrist?
Suncoast Podiatry is now located in Diamond Street, Cooroy A CHILD’S feet are the foundation of their body. A complex network of muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, nerves & blood vessels must work together to enable efficient & pain free transfer of body weight over the feet. If any of the structures in this rapidly growing network are out of balance, the impact can be felt
throughout the entire body. If left untreated in the growing child, foot & leg problems can cause years of avoidable pain & lost activity. This can have long term impacts on the physical activity levels & therefore overall health & wellbeing of your child long beyond the school years. The development of a healthy gait & posture re-
quires good input from the visual, vestibular & proprioceptive systems. Poor foot mechanics (such as in Joint Hypermobility Syndrome, flat feet, in-toeing, tip-toeing) can affect the proprioceptive information the brain receives via the feet. This affects muscle activity patterns and can lead to postural & gait adapta-
tions. If left, these can cause lifelong musculoskeletal problems. Vital stages in gross motor skill & gait development occur before the age of 8. Early assessment is therefore essential. Intervening early, while bones are still rapidly growing, offers the best opportunity to make lasting improvements to a child’s foot & leg health. Should my child see a Children’s Podiatrist? • Any complaint of foot or lower limb pain • Delayed onset of walking • Poor balance/ clumsiness/ co-ordination • Flat feet • Gait disorders (in-toeing/ out-toeing/ tip-toeing) • Difficulty keeping up with peers • Alignment disorders (Metatarsus Adductus, Junvenile HAV) • Trips frequently/ asks to be carried/ wants legs massaged Suncoast Podiatry have moved from the Doctors Surgery in Emerald street, come and visit us at our new location at 7 Diamond Street, Cooroy. Contact suncoast podiatry.com.au or phone 5474 4070.
Getting the burn without burning your time CALORIE Loss Through Cellar Fitness: You might have seen tables showing how much exercise burns off so many calories. For example: twenty minutes of walking to burn off an apple. Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, says this can be depressing, especially for anyone with injuries or health conditions that make exercise difficult. Even relatively active people can find this discouraging. The truth is, you don’t need to do long hours of exercise to burn up calories, as what happens during exercise is a small part of the picture. Jodie says, ‘it is the cellular adaptions that occur afterwards that are most important. We have tiny energy burning units in each of our cells, called mitochondria. Mitochondria increase in number when we exert ourselves. The more mitochondria you have, the more fat and glucose you will burn over the course of the day’. Jodie explains that short intervals of high intensity activity followed by a rest period, and then repeated, has distinct metabolic advantages. This style of exercise is known as High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). HIIT looks different for everyone. For a reasonably fit person it could be 30 seconds of very intense activity (like sprinting) with a four minute rest. Repeat this three more
times and you have a short workout that will boost mitochondria count, giving you better energy utilisation over the next twenty four hours. For an unfit person, HIIT might begin with five seconds of exertion like walking up a short flight of stairs. Rest at the top before going down and then going up again. The key is that you feel exertion, this is a sign that your cells are building more mitochondria. Jodie says exercise doesn’t need to be a time-consuming punishment. There are many ways to include short bursts of activity into a daily routine. As a bonus, the benefits of HIIT go beyond weight management to include: cardiovascular function, mood, cognition, muscle mass, immunity and bone strength. Note: this information is not to replace medical or specialist advice. Please talk to your health professional if you are unsure about how to increase your activity levels. Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in improving a wide range of health conditions through nutrition and natural health therapies. 4 beds 2 bath 5 car pool 5.36 acres Designed by architect Russell Hall, for property expert Erle Levy, it’s no surprise that this gorgeous Pomona home is both unique and ideally suited to our tropical climate. Boasting the perfect north-facing aspect, this Queenslander-style timber home is cool in summer and cosy in winter, with lovely cross breezes, ceiling fans and a wood fire heater. Hidden away behind electric gates and established gardens on 2.17Ha / 5.36 acres, you could be miles from anywhere, yet Pomona’s shops, cafes and schools are just a walk away. A charming circular driveway leads to the home, and there’s easy access into this elevated home via a ramp. This property will delight timber lovers with its French doors, louvre windows, timber floorboards throughout and generous use of hardwood. It has the feel of a tropical island home, yet every mod con is included, with the kitchen featuring a 5-burner gas stove, dishwasher and breakfast bar. Spread over three levels - with a loft-style bedroom at the top - the kitchen, living space, two bedrooms and the main bathroom are on the mid-level. This level opens out to a wide, north-facing verandah for entertaining, with views over the in-ground swimming pool and dam. On the ground floor there’s a fourth bedroom and second bedroom, opening to a beautifully cool concreted entertainment area and on to the pool. Other features: Dam with jetty and creek, veggie patch, garden shed, carport for 4 vehicles, plus another for boat or caravan; 3kw solar system, solar hot water; NBN Internet. Offers Over $625,000. For more details, contact Phil Hargrave on 0417 750 507 or Samantha on 0425 777 121.
3 bed 1 bath 4 car 2.47 acres On the edge of town with amazing privacy, this 2.47acre property is unique and beautiful. This 1940’s Queenslander with 10 ft ceilings has been lovingly renovated with modern touches like glass louvre windows which cools the home and opens up vistas to the stunning gardens. The open plan country style kitchen and dining room with loads of cupboard space has polished wooden floors and features a stylish 5 burner gas cooktop where you can create tasty meals from the abundant edible gardens. The main bedroom has VJ walls and casement windows and the additional 2 bedrooms are generous in size, while the light and bright renovated bathroom has a bath for those cool winter evenings. Double french doors lead from the lounge onto the covered verandahs which wrap around the north and east side of the house. The home is energy efficient with a grid feed 3KW solar system and 6,000 gallons of water storage backed up by a reliable, drinkable bore which is plumbed to the house. A near new 4 bay steel shed with one lockup area is perfect for storing trailers, cars and boats. If you like stepping out your back door straight into food gardens with fruit trees, then this is the place you’ve been looking for. Herbs and vegies, bush tucker and dozens of mature fruit trees are only the beginning of the delights you will find. There are many layers to this garden from ground-covers to native shade trees, giving sustenance and habitat to dozens of bird species who call this creation home. A creek at the lower boundary surrounds an open flat mowed area perfect for kicking a footy or running a few sheep. All the hard work has been done so you can move in and enjoy everything this wonderful hinterland village has to offer, like walking distance to the primary school, hotel and cafe. 4 Bed 2 Bath 3 Car Pool 4.62 ha/ 11.4 acres For those who love the peace and tranquillity of a country property, but also demand a top quality design and build, it can be hard to find the perfect combination - which is why this glorious residence won’t be on the market for long! This sophisticated home has a wonderful look and feel, offering the peace and solitude of its own, private 4.62 hectare (11.4 acres) estate, yet within easy reach of shops, cafes and a school in picturesque Pomona. For the current owners, this 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom home has been many things - a family home, an idyllic rural playground for their children, a rainforest retreat, and an inspiration for the well known artist in the family. What is unusual about this property is the 2.5 hectares of natural remnant rainforest, with wide walking tracks leading to Six Mile Creek on the boundary. Bordered by National Park on two sides, there is also direct access to the Noosa tracks and trails network. However, there is enough
cleared land around the house itself, for a game of cricket or football, or even a pony. And then there’s the lagoon-style saltwater pool, a cooling oasis during the summer months. The home itself is spacious and well maintained, boasting grand cathedral ceilings, that reach 4 metres at their peak. Built in a modern Queenslander style of solid rendered brick, there’s a striking butterfly staircase to the entry and western red cedar French doors open to the north-facing verandah, overlooking the pool. The wide verandah wraps around the home on three sides, providing ample space for entertaining, or simply relaxing and taking in the pretty and serene surrounds. The beautiful kitchen is the heart of the home, boasting endless top quality features, including marble bench tops, Miele dishwasher, hardwood timber cupboards, soft close drawers, breakfast bar, gas cook top and a big bay window overlooking the gardens. Imported Italian terracotta floor tiles flow
throughout the huge, open plan living areas and master bedroom. Ceiling fans throughout keep the home lovely and cool in summer, while a slow combustion fireplace is warm and welcoming come winter. There’s a gas bayonet fitting, too. Naturally, the huge master bedroom has a walk-in robe, plus a spacious ensuite with enough room to fit a glorious free-standing bath to take in the wonderful views. French doors open onto two sides of the verandah. The other bedrooms all have built-in robes and ceiling fans, and two open to the verandah. Clever design has placed 2 of the bedrooms and the main bathroom in a separate wing, for added privacy and seclusion. Space will never be an issue here, with myriad hideaways to escape to on the property, including the cute cubby house, currently the domain of the artist-in-residence! Under the house is a triple lock-up garage, suitable to park one car plus the ride-on mower and other tools and toys. There’s a carport, too, to park a further two cars plus a small boat and trailer. Whether you’re seeking the serenity of the bush, a children’s paradise for your family, a place to create, or simply your own private rainforest full of rare, visiting birds, this is it. Offers over $695,000. For more details contact Phil or Sam Hargrave, Hargrave Real Estate on 0417 750 507 or 0425 777 121.

Dragons’ already breathing fire in 2016 IT won’t be much longer before the cooler temperatures will with be with us again. That means the game they play in heaven is already with us for another season, but the dragons you’ll find in Eumundi might be a little smaller than you’d expect. Rest assured, what the boys lack in size, they make up for in spirit. The Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Union club is located at the Eumundi Showground and it’s a fantastic place to watch the enthusiastic, energetic juniors battle it out for game day supremacy each weekend. The club has called the showground home for eight years and each season the club has grown its member base as

Despite being a relatively small club compared with others on the Sunshine Coast, the Eumundi Dragons are very proud of the achievements of their junior players. The Dragons are delighted with the support they continue to receive from the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. Last week, manager Geoff Edwards was
invited into the lair to catch up with the players and coaches at a training session. “We love sponsoring the Dragons,” Geoff said. “This club is going places and we’re delighted to be on board supporting junior rugby again this season,” he added. If you’re interested in learning more about the Eumundi Dragons please email admin@dragonsrugbyunion.org.au or call Doug Toms on 0410 507 927.
