Ground broken on play project WHILE work has commenced on the six month construction of the Hinterland Adventure Playground at Cooroy - it has now been made official. Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart and Member for Nicklin Robert Skelton were at Lower Mill Place on Friday 7 May for a sod turning, to signal the start of this landmark project. After years of planning and development, construction of the new playground started in April and is expected to be finished by the end of 2021, weather permitting. The multi-million dollar project, jointly funded by Noosa Council and the Queensland Government, aims to encourage more visitors to the hinterland, with the added bonus of creating employment opportunities and helping to boost the local economy.

Gemlife appeals Council’s ‘no’ to village BY ALEX PURCELL GEMLIFE is appealing Noosa Council’s ‘no’ decision for a $130m retirement resort on land next to the Cooroy Golf Club. The notice of appeal, obtained by the Cooroy Rag, was filed on 23 April, 2021 to the Planning and Environment Court at Brisbane against the decision of Noosa Council “to refuse a development application for development permits

for material change of use comprised of a seniors living community”. Noosa Council told the Cooroy Rag they are aware of the appeal and it is expected councillors will be asked to vote in favour of defending the original decision at a future meeting. “Council is aware that an appeal has been lodged with the Planning & Environment Court against Council’s unanimous de-

cision to refuse the application given its significant conflicts with the planning scheme. Council’s Manager for Development Assessment Kerri Coyle said a report will be presented to a future Council meeting on the appeal, recommending that Council defend the appeal. The appeal seeks to have the development application approved “subject to reasonable and relevant

conditions”. The grounds of appeal include several reasons for approval including “the proposed development is consistent with the urban footprint designation” and overlay mapping by Noosa Council “did not identify the land as an agricultural land conservation area”. After refusing the development application in March, councillors said the proposed development lay outside the urban bound-

ary for the Noosa Planning Scheme, on land set aside for rural and open space recreation purposes and the development would have resulted in a high-density residential development outside the Urban Growth Boundary. The appeal also seeks approval on the grounds the proposed development would “result in a substantial net community benefit” through “choice and diversity of housing types”,

contributing “to additional employment” and bringing “economic, social and community benefits to Cooroy”. Cooroy Golf Club told the Cooroy Rag they do not have any opinion on the appeal and are meeting with GemLife this Friday, May 14. GemLife was also contacted for comment but no response had been receieved by the time of going to print.

COOROY – WOOD CHOP COMPETITION FROM the Gympie Times and Mary River Mining Gazette, Tuesday 14 February 1911: “The postponed Victory Hotel wood-chop took place in the paddock adjoining the Cooroy Hall on Saturday afternoon. There was a splendid attendance considering the wretched weather experienced during the past week. “Originally there were 13 entries, but owing to the various postponements a number of intending

competitors could not attend, nevertheless, the seven who did turn up chopped with such vim that excitement was very keen. The event was carried out in three heats and a final, Mr A Burton proving the Winner. “Mr Jocumsen is so pleased with the result that he intends to offer a 15 pound prize at an early date. “The whole affair was under the supervision of Mr S C Jocumsen. “Results:

First heat - A Blake (20 secs start) 1. H Renwick (22 secs) 2. Only two competitors; time 1.35 Second heat: A Burton (Gympie, 28 secs start) 1. ‘Thank you Cooroy for the kindness of strangers’ FROM paying for someone’s groceries to leaving envelopes of money on bench seats, Cooroy is fast becoming renowned for its kindness to strangers. Recently, Tasmin Kerr came across $5 in an envelope that read: “A gift for you. You are

worthy. You are somebody. Enjoy a cuppa on us.” “I opened it to see which coffee shop I would be supporting but it wasn’t a voucher, just cash. We left it there for the next person and it still made my day. “Thank you Cooroy town for the kindness of strang-

IN last month’s edition of the Cooroy Rag we ran a story about a UK woman looking for an old friend who once lived in Cooroy. Fiona Steven contacted us hoping someone might know her long-lost friend Suzy Russell and put them back in contact. And guess what? Someone did! Fiona told us she has since received an email from Suzy. “Suzy left Cooroy 21

EAGER bargain hunters were lined up outside Lifeline Cooroy on Friday 7 May for their annual denim sale.

At least 50 people were gathered in front of the Maple Street store, patiently waiting their turn to dig through the huge amount

of denim goods. The Lifeline store was closed the week before to prepare for the massive sale.

Win for Six Mile Bridge pedestrians DESIGN work has begun on the long-overdue Six Mile Creek Bridge replacement between Pomona and Cooran with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) confirming pedestrians have been included in the brief. A TMR spokesperson told the Cooroy Rag the design would strengthen and widen the bridge for better use by pedestrian and motorised traffic. “The proposed design will include: a sturdier bridge structure, capable of transporting two lanes of traffic (one lane in each direction) - removing the need for motorists to stop and give way to opposing traffic on the bridge - flood resilience measures and additional shoulder width (of a minimum of two metres) on both sides of the bridge providing an active transport benefit for pedestrians and bike riders”. The confirmation comes amid calls from residents keen to ensure the new design includes a designated pedestrian access to make it “safe for everyone”. The spokesperson said a design layout showing the new bridge lane and additional shoulder width will be

provided to the community for comment as the design progresses. TMR said they will work with residents and other key stakeholders during the consultation phase of the project to further develop the design to the community’s benefit. “We appreciate feedback and will continue to keep the community updated as design progresses,” they said. The design is expected to be completed by late 2021 with construction scheduled to start in the first half of 2022. The upgrade of the Six Mile Creek Bridge #7 comes after years of relentless campaigning by residents and State Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton. In 2020, Sandy announced funding had been

secured for 2020-21 financial year to address the historical hot spot. The Queensland Government has committed $18 million to the project. Over the years, there have been reports of drivers not obeying the signage in the lead up to the bridge and failing to respond to the improved line of sight and extensive warnings about the narrow bridge. A camera was also installed on site to observe driver behaviour. Recently, there was reportedly a two-vehicle incident at the bridge involving a car and a school bus.

YOUR SAY... YES OR NO: Should the new Six Mile Creek bridge between Pomona and Cooran have a designated pedestrian access? Annie Greig: “Yes, of course. It has to be safe for everyone.” Denise Russell: “Of course it needs one. Roads were ini ally foot paths, tracks to walk on, then came horses. Vehicles took over. Humans s ll need to travel, and we now recognise the importance of movement.” Michelle Jenkins: “Let’s do it properly this me, two lanes and a bike path. Planning for the future growth.” Maureen Bowden: “Yes. All new roads and bridges should be made wider incorpora ng a decent sized “carriageway” for bike riders and runners.” Heather Ford: “Bike riders come past our place all the me, so yes for that. No for walkers, never seen a walker on this road and I live a stone throw from the bridge.” Jus n Allen: “They might as well add an extra lane while they at it.” Jodi-Lee Crump: “Yes every bridge and road should.” Mia Hacker: “Yes for bikes and walkers.” Heather Manders: “A big yes.”

AMENTIIES at the Cooroy Camphor Laurel Shed and Cooroy Badminton Club are being upgraded. Noosa Council received $20,000 in Works for Queensland funding from the Queensland Government and a $20,000 Federal Government grant to provide new flooring, tiling, painting and a new kitchen at the Badminton Club. The Camphor Laurel Shed upgrades include new amenities, electrical and hydraulics. The Cooroy projects are among works delivered using Works for Queensland and Unite and Recover funding.

IT is estimated approximately two thousand people attended the Dawn Service at the Cooroy Cenotaph on ANZAC Day. Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub Branch Vice President Peter Watts told the Cooroy Rag it was pleasing to see the number of young people attending the Dawn Service, as well as many from the local community. “The address by our guest speaker Ian Whisker AM was first class and resonated with many of the veterans who attended the service,” Peter said. “Our vocalist Ashleigh Rainer singing the hymn Abide with Me and the Australian and New Zealand National Anthems were amazing. “The March was well attended by many of the locals, veterans their families, schools and the community. The feedback we have received has been very positive.” Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub Branch Secretary, Jo Dyce agreed.

The Anzac Day March was back for 2021 and more than two thousand people turned out in support

“When we were selling merchandise in the days leading up to ANZAC Day, people were saying how pleased they were the service and march were happening. I

think people were anxious to get back after COVID.” Jo said Anzac Day’s success was due to a team effort. “It’s a team of people that makes things happen and we

would like to thank all our volunteers who play a very large part in the day’s success.” Well done, Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub Branch and all those involved. Lest we forget.

COOROY ex-serviceman Denis Thompson is the recipient of one of the Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL) 2021 RSL ANZAC of the Year awards. The ANZAC of the Year Awards are made annually “to recognise the efforts and achievements of up to seven Australians who have given service to their fellow Australians and to the community in a positive, selfless and compassionate manner”. Denis is one of just two recipients after being nominated by executives of the Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub Branch, MP Sandy Bolton and Ian Whisker. Denis told the Cooroy Rag he is honoured. “I read some of the submissions that were put in by various people and they were quite humbling. “I didn’t realise they felt that way. “I much prefer to walk in the

background and even though it stuck me out in the public view more than I would like, I am honoured.” Denis, who served in 19661986, was nominated for the award in recognition of his many years of dedicated service to provide support to veterans through the Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub-Branch, the RSL Queensland Sunshine Coast District and to the wider community of the Sunshine Coast. After becoming a private driver for pensioners and welfare, Denis built up the volunteer service to two vehicles and four drivers that now provide transport for not just veterans and veteran’s families but also elderly in the Cooroy district, if there is room available. “We work Monday to Friday for shopping trips, local medical appointments and hospital visits. “Every week we do a shop-

Denis with wife, Sue

ping trip to a different shopping centre. We visit Maroochydore, Kawana and Gympie. “It is a free service run out of the Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub Branch by volunteers.”

Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub Branch president Patricia Geelan said Denis is very deserving of the award. “It is certainly very well deserved, and we are so, so proud,” Patricia said.

Daughter angry at Cooroy cemetery vandalism A GREIVING daughter is concerned her mother’s grave has been vandalised. Born and raised Cooroy local and now Buderim resident, Fiona Bichel visited her mother Helen Bichel’s plaque at Cooroy Cemetery recently, only to find plants she had planted, removed. Fiona told the Cooroy Rag two geranium plants she had planted next to her mum’s plaque had been dug up. “My mum had been on my mind a lot the week before and I felt like something was wrong, hence my visit. I knew straight away why she had been on my mind.,” Fiona said. “Someone decided it was okay to dig up the two geranium plants I had planted.

“I know Council don’t like you doing that kind of thing, but I don’t think it was Council because the grave next to Mum’s still has its lily and the other side has another plant.” Cooroy Rag contacted Noosa Council who confirmed it was not them. “Council staff would never remove any flowers from a burial site, prior to talking with family members first,” said Noosa Council Communications and Community Engagement Manager Ken Furdek. “There would be no rea-

son to remove geraniums and our staff are disappointed to hear such an incident has occurred. Fiona said she is angry. “I felt angry that her burial site had been interfered with and violated. It’s hard enough mourning her passing.” Fiona has since returned to Cooroy and replanted the geraniums, and they are still there. “Hopefully, it was just a one off. I know it happens, but I was a little surprised given the community of Cooroy.”

Cooroy’s greatest teacup hunt THE hunt is on for vintage and antique fine bone china teacups for the monthly Cooroy senior event, Sconetime. Sconetime organiser, Sunshine Coast Foodie Martin Duncan, is calling for donations to create a set of 100 teacups to be kept at the Cooroy Memorial Hall. Attendee Helen Craig told the Cooroy Rag at last month’s Sconetime, it would be the biggest crazy tea set. “Crazy tea sets were all the rage in the 1930s. They were sets of a cups, saucers and plates that matched but were different from each other.” So far, many teacups have been donated, including Sconetime volunteer Helen Duncan’s mother’s Royal Albert tea set. Martin said Helen has been an amazing supporter of Sconetime right from the beginning. “Helen is mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and was a lawyer and resort wear designer. “While her Bali trips away are hampered by an annoying COVID Handbrake, Helen is entertaining herself with CWA events and Scone-

time. Every month, Helen sashays around in this cute outfit serving tea or scones.” Sconetime is a monthly event that creates meaningful community connections. “It is where seniors in our community come together with family and local business owners over fresh hot scones loaded with home-made jam and freshly whipped cream,” Martin said. Alex and Jodi from the Cooroy Rag will be at Sconetime on May 12, handing out copies of the Rag, fresh off the press. The June Sconetime is being held on Tuesday, 8

June at 10am at the Cooroy Memorial Hall. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased online at: https://www.trybooking. com/BRBOC “Buy tickets for our next Sconetime for you, mum, dad, nan, pop or a senior neighbour. “Some lucky attendee is going to love this lucky door prize from Bold As Love Jewellers.” Last month, the Cooroy Rag team was at Sconetime at the same time as the ABC, who were there filming a segment for Landline. “Look out for our Sconetime feature on ABC Landline,” Martin said.

A COOROY couple have something that doesn’t belong to them - and they want to return it. Roger and Robyn Ladbrook have a plaque, dedicated to Des Gundry. Roger told the Cooroy Rag he came into possession of the plaque in 2014 when he worked at Nandroya Mill. “The plaque was on a post in the car park and I removed it a few days before the administration offices were demolished. “The plaque reads: In memory of Des Gundry,

a friend and workmate for 27 years. Died 21st March, 1999, aged 56 years. Sadly missed by all.” Roger and Robyn are hoping to find someone who knows Des or his

family to give the plaque to. “We don’t know who Des was or how he died. And this has been weighing on us. We want to see it go to someone who loved him,” Robyn said.

Call for volunteers for Noosa Show 2021

Yeeha! The Gympie Show is back RENOWNED as one of the last “true agricultural shows”, the Gympie Show is back this year. Gympie Show Society Vice President, Warren Smith told the Cooroy Rag they have been planning this year’s show ever since last year’s was cancelled due to COVID. “We basically work on a 365-day rotation. We get one show over and the required aftermath and then start on another one. “This year there has been more work completing a COVID Safe plan but we have received our certificate of compliance and we are ready to go. “Being a mostly outdoor event, our pavilion exhibits are the only areas that

required planning such as traffic flow but our chief stewards have done their jobs for the last seven years, so they know what they’re doing.” Warren said show goers this year can expect the high level of agricultural events, stalls and displays that the Gympie Show always delivers, plus a few new additions. “Gympie is renowned for the being one of the last true agriculture shows. We cater for horses and cattle and trade exhibits. Our machinery alley is chocka-block. We can’t fit them all in. “This year we will have an un-lead section in our stud cattle and every night after the fireworks, some-

one will win $500 with the chance to win $10,000.” In past years, around 15,000 to 18,000 people have flocked to Gympie Showgrounds for the three-day event, but Warren said this year they might see a lot more. “Shows and events have been well supported this year because they didn’t happen last year. Most of the shows I have spoken to have had increased crowds and at our rodeo in February we were expecting around a thousand people and had 3,000 attend.” The show has been well supported by sponsors. “We have had someone dedicated to talking to local people and we have

a record amount of corporate support this year. Our major sponsor is Tom Grady. They have been our major sponsor for a number of years.” While the show officially kicks off on May 12, Warren said some events will start the afternoon prior because they “don’t have enough time to fit it all in”. This year new ring lights, funded by Government grants and unveiled by Llew O’Brien on May 6, will allow the show to “continue running new events at nighttime”. Get yourself to the Gympie Show at Gympie Showgrounds, Southside from 8am to 9pm May 12 to 15, 2021. For more see: www.gympieshow.com.au

WITH COVID-19 threats lessening every day the team behind the Noosa Show have announced dates in September for the return of their event after a forced hiatus in 2020. This year’s show will be held at the Pomona Showgrounds on 10 and 11 September, 2021. The theme for the event is ‘Where Town Meets Country’ and the Show Society is keen for the show to be “inclusive of the Shire’s more urban residents as well as its rural folk”. “We want everyone in the Shire to embrace our own Noosa Country Show,” said Noosa Show Society President, Charlie Pattison “In 2021 it will have something for everyone, with ring events, wood chopping, great food, regional and school displays, as well as trade stalls. “Show Days are great days out for people of all ages, but especially for kids - they love the animals and sideshow alley. “As well, we are putting together an entertainment schedule that will have something for everyone to enjoy, from local school bands to more professional

local talent.” With the health and safety of the community in mind, the 2021 Noosa Show will be operating under COVID-19 best practices, following Queensland Health guidelines and Queensland Ag Shows Industry Covid Plan. In most areas of operation, these guidelines will require more manpower than in past years. Therefore the Show Society is asking for more hands on deck to help in the six months leading up to the show, as well as for volunteers on show days. “We have areas of specific need, the details of which we will be sharing in coming weeks. “Right now, we are putting together ‘job descriptions’ so that those interested in helping us will know what might be required of them. “Never has the saying ‘many hands make like work’ more apt,” said Mr Pattison. Enquiries about how you can help can be made by contacting the Society’s Administration Officer, Carole, on 0490 254 652 or at administrationofficer@ noosashowsociety.org.au

Marc Fenwick Desmarchelier, 8 November 1934 – 27 March 2021 HIS father once remarked, “Marc is so friendly that if he were dropped off at the South Pole, he’d have all the penguins following him by the end of the day.” The grandson of proud French migrants, Marc was born in Sydney in 1934 to parents Sadie and Eugene. He was a bright and curious child and enjoyed a relatively carefree childhood with younger siblings John, Anne,

Jim and Carmel. During World War II, the family relocated to Batlow, a small town in New South Wales. As the War drew to a close, Marc packed his bags for boarding school at Riverview College, Sydney. In his final year of schooling, Marc was struck down with polio and told he’d never walk again. This wasn’t the first time Marc defied the odds. He successfully completed his Senior Certificate and was awarded the Winston Churchill medal for New South Wales school cadet of the year. Marc went

on to serve in National Service in the Signals Corp. Despite his military passion, Marc pursued a career in accounting, training as a Chartered Accountant. In 1956 he was admitted as a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and in 1960, he completed post graduate studies, with honours. Over his long career, Marc developed a wide experience in the areas of business, finance, commodities and business administration. With an MBA under his belt in 1974, Marc later became the National Director of Administration for Hungerfords, Chartered Accountants, Sydney. Marc enjoyed the outdoors throughout his life. Along with his brothers and friends, he purchased a 350-acre property at Burraga, south of Bathurst, on which they planted over 230,000 pine trees. It was during this time Marc met and married Margaret Glover. By the winter of 1965, their daughter Cate was born, followed soon after by David, John and Andrew. In the late 70s, Marc changed career direction and became the General Manager of the Peanut Marketing Board. During this time, he met Jane Webster. They bought property at west Cooroy, which is still home today. By the mid 80s, their daughters Laura and Megan were

born. Marc commuted each week to Sydney as the National Director of Finance and Administration, for the Institute of Chartered Accountants. In 1990, Marc began practicing on his own and opened his office in the old Bank of New South Wales building, corner of Emerald and Maple Streets, Cooroy. Soon after, he moved his practice down the street to St Barnabas, 4 Emerald Street where he operated as sole practitioner for more than 30 years. Marc thoroughly enjoyed his work and loved nothing more than solving complex taxation problems until the age of 86 years. Marc’s interests included family, travel, sailing his boat ‘The Roaring Forties’ and long lunches with friends. He was also very proud to have volunteered for 25 years to the rural fire brigade. In recent years, Marc enjoyed playing cards with family. He lived his life like he played his cards - played with what he was dealt, kept them close to his chest, but always seemed to have an ace up his sleeve. He was a straight shooter, a wonderful storyteller, intelligent, generous, marched to the beat of his own drum, and always a gentleman. He will be greatly missed.

news

Making news, again THE Cooroy Rag was recently visited by GXpress, a local magazine that informs the world about all things news publishing technology related. Managing director Peter Coleman dropped by our Cooroy office to have a chat with the team: Judi, Jodi, Geoff and Alex about what makes the Cooroy Rag the great success it is. You can read the full article on our Facebook page. Meanwhile, we are proud to announce we are increasing our distribution from 7500 papers to 10,000. This comes after numerous cries from avid readers in our community that there aren’t enough papers to go around and they don’t want to miss out. We don’t want you to miss out either! The additional papers will be distributed across our bulk drop points in Cooroy, Pomona, Boreen Point, Tewantin, Gympie, Imbil, Kenilworth, Eumundi and Doonan. This month, if you turn to page 31 you will also see we have brough back classifieds – but with a difference. Each month this page will be sponsored by different local business making the advertisements FREE for those in our community.

This month, the classifieds page is being sponsored by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce. In a note about the decision to sponsor the page, the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce said it was pleased to be able to sponsor a “new innovation for our community newspaper”. The Chamber is also promoting an event for Queensland Small Business Month that it will be co-hosting with Pomona and District Chamber of Commerce on 26 May at the Cooroy Memorial Hall. The event will feature five

of the Chamber’s member businesses who will serve up a taste of what the Hinterland has to offer. Call the team on 0412 043 843 to register your interest and find out more. Also, last week, the new Cooroy Rag committee met to discuss giving away the paper’s profits. As this meeting happened after this paper went to print, we will have more on this in the next edition of the paper. So stay tuned… To place your classified, call the Cooroy Rag office on (07) 5442 6699.

WELL, the story goes, local legend Troy French recently celebrated a milestone on the birthday calendar. A little birdie dropped in a great pic of Troy in younger times to go with this story. It goes a little like this: Troy and other local legend, Mark Arbuthnot were playing QLD Golf Doubles at the prestigious Royal Pines on the Gold Coast. Troy, early in the game, hit a sensational shot but had to climb a fence to retrieve his ball, ripping the backside out of his pants. With many followers gathering at each shot, Troy gallantly played on regardless of the breezeway coming up the rear (so to speak) and the boys did well and came in third place but were running late for presentation. Not to be deterred, Troy and Mark were ushered into presentation with not only their golf shoes still on but with Troy’s shorts more or less in their unrepairable state. They did get a great pic taken (front on of course) with cricket legend Greg Ritchie. Happy birthday, Troy!

AN award-winning hypnobirthing program is now being taught in Pomona. Certified hypno-birthing practitioner, Zoe Strickland moved to Pomona recently, bringing with her years of experience and the internationally recognised Mindful Mamma Programme. Zoe told the Cooroy Rag the Mindful Mamma Programme is the most wellknown hypnobirthing class in the UK. “I teach it because it can be facilitated really nicely over one day. It blends mindfulness, hypnosis, visualisation and breath work. “Hypnosis is different from meditation in that it speeds things up, because you learn a conditioned response to the techniques you practice. They are very effective, and many not just for birthing but life

tools too.” “Hypnobirthing makes the connection between mind and body from a birthing point of view. It’s about losing fear and getting those lovely hormones flowing that support labour. It’s about calm empowered birthing, and is for couples birthing in our private, or public systems, as well as those choosing home birth.” Zoe teaches the programme over six hours to four couples at a time. “I run the programme from the Lions Hall on Mountain Street in Pomona once every two months . Each couple receives a printed resource folder and nine track audio for home practice and we enjoy a delicious morning and afternoon tea during the day!.” Zoe’s next classes are 23 May , July 18th and 12

September.Zoe and her husband moved to Pomona from Cairns to be closer to their children and grandson, who live on the Coast. Originally from the UK, Zoe emigrated in 2007 and started teaching the Mindful Mamma Programme 11 years ago. Zoe is also a mindfulness meditation teacher and has another business called Meditation Made Easy through which she will start teaching her introduction to meditation six-week courses . Take a break at new cafe FIKA is a Swedish word that means to take a break for great food, coffee and cake, with friends, family or oneself, any time, your way - and that’s exactly what you can do at Cooroy’s newest café. Fika owners, Cooroy raised high-school sweethearts, Guy and Eva, pictured right, told the Cooroy Rag the theme of café is to bring fresh, vibrant, healthy food and amazing coffee and cake. “Our focus is on local suppliers where we can and quality. Our food is fresh, tasty with majority of the menu made to order and we have lots of cakes. Big focus for us is coffee and cake in the afternoons.” Growing up in Cooroy, Guy started his cooking apprenticeship while at Noosa High (where he and Eva met), qualifying at well-known Noosa restaurant, Rickys. Together, the dream team then travelled overseas to Europe where Guy worked in a Michelin star restaurant in London and spent time to Sweden. Returning to Australia, the couple lived in Byron

Bay for 10 years where Guy was the sous chef at Byron at Byron and head chef of seafood restaurant, Rae’s on Wategos. Now the parents of two children, nine and five, Guy and Eva moved back home to Cooroy and started a “beautiful café”. Fika opened just two weeks ago, where Pete’s Café used to be, and when asked what the response has been like, Guy said it has exceeded their expectations. “It has been massive and amazing. “We’ve had lots of oldtime locals and Pete’s Café goers come and visit us as well as people from all over. It has been very well received.” With Guy cooking and Eva front of house and a

staff of locals and other former-NDSHS students, the couple are enjoying their new venture as much as those dropping into their café for one of their famous breakfast or lunch bowls. They have also put on their first private function, something they are looking forward to doing more of. “For the growth of Fika, we can’t wait to welcome events, birthday parties and private functions.” These private events involve exclusive use of the venue and a custom set menu. “Anyone interested in booking Fika for a private function can enquire within.” Fika is open seven days from 7am to 4pm.

Goodness Gracious moving to Bli Bli POPULAR gluten-free cafe Goodness Gracious is sadly moving out of Cooroy. Owner Jill Milne told the Cooroy Rag they will be moving their cafe to new premises in Bli Bli by the end of June. “We’re hoping to open the new cafe by July 1. “It is completely bare at the moment, so will need a fit-out. But it has an upstairs with a veranda that has 180-degree views from Mount Ninderry to Mount Coolum overlooking the Maroochy River.” Goodness Gracious moved to Cooroy from Yandina in January 2020 but Jill said it wasn’t an overly successful transition.

“We had to move out of the building in Yandina because the landlord wanted the land. “After we opened in Cooroy, we were hit by COVID and then due to the amount of building work happening in the area around us, we have struggled with workers taking up all the all-day car parks out the front. “It’s not so bad for the other businesses in the complex here because they operate on appointment but for us, if you want to get a coffee but you can’t get a park, you drive on.” Despite this, Jill said they have enjoyed their time in Cooroy and customers are sad to see them go.

“I live in Pomona so we did look for another premise in the area. “For a lot of our Yandina customers who came to Cooroy when we moved, they’re happy because we’ll be closer in Bli Bli and our Cooroy customers have said they’ll come to visit us.” You will find Goodness Gracious at 311 David Low Way, Bli Bli.

Hear more with a limitless approach IMAGINE a device that helps you hear more of what’s going on around you. This is not possible with traditional hearing aids because they’re designed to focus on speech coming from in front of you. With such a limited sound scene, it becomes difficult to follow conversations. Most importantly, a limited sound scene prevents your brain from getting the sound information it needs. The hearing device manufacturer Oticon

focuses on understanding the brain better and developing technology that supports it. New research tells us the brain needs access to the full sound scene to naturally make sense of sounds. You hear with your brain, not your ears. Your ears capture sounds so your brain can identify them, locate them, and decide which ones to listen to. Oticon More allows you to experience the full sound scene in all its richness. This means it supports

your brain by giving it access more sound information. Book into Acoustic Hearing Clinics to find out more about Oticon’s cutting-edge portfolio of technology. With 5 Sunshine Coast clinics and 1 Gympie clinic, there is a clinic close to you.

Happy fifth birthday to Cooroy Shoes! COOROY Shoes is celebrating an exciting milestone. Owner Maree Millar along with “assets”, manager Wilhelmina and staff member Karen, are celebrating five years of business. Maree said she is thankful to Cooroy for ongoing support. “I can’t believe that five years has gone so fast, and I didn’t realise what a journey it would be. It is the support of all the great people in Cooroy that has

made us a success and we continue to go from strength to strength.” Maree owned a shoe shop in Montville for 15 years before she “decided to buy another one”. “Really, I should be retired but I’m not ready to give it up because our styles are always changing and customers can’t wait to see what is coming next.We have a lot of specialised shoes and podiatrists send people to us because we carry such a great range.

“We also have fashion shoes, which are popular with the younger age group. Our range is a bit different. Instead of run on the mill, they’re very versatile and people love it.” Maree said the highlight is when people come in and say they haven’t seen such a great range. “We welcome new customers every day from all around the country who have heard about our store or who have found us through our website.”

Cooroy Community Bank gives back

Cooroora United’s U11’s Puma team

FROM investing profits back into the communities to supporting local economies, the Cooroy Community Bank has proven that profit and social responsibility can go hand and hand, injecting nearly $2m into local projects. Projects include helping restore the Cooroy Memorial Hall and sporting sponsorships. Recently, Cooroy Community Bank became the primary sponsor of Cooroora United’s Mini Roos, donating $3000 to the local sporting group. The Cooroora United Sponsorship Coordinator

told the Cooroy Rag that sponsorship makes all the difference. “Without sponsorship we wouldn’t be able to afford jerseys and equipment as they cost a lot of money. “Sponsorship not only helps promote the sponsor but it supports locals and brings the community together.” Local Engagement Officer Zoe Reinke told the Cooroy Rag the profits from local customers choosing to do business with a Community Bank have provided a viable boost to the town’s futures and community. “When our community

succeeds, we all succeed, and we absolutely thrive on that.” The Cooroy Community Bank is hosting a Community Forum next month to discuss future projects that would benefit our community. “The forum will be the perfect opportunity for the Cooroy community and surrounding areas, to have their say on what is important to them, and what ideas they have to make their suburb an even better place to live, work and play. By joining together, we can identify initiatives that will benefit everyone and help build a sustainable community into the future,” said Cooroy Community Bank Chairman, Rick Cooper Residents, businesses, and community groups are encouraged to all come along to the forum and share their thoughts about how we can make the Cooroy community great. The forum will start at 5:30pm at Cooroy Memorial Hall. For more info visit the branch or email zoe.reinke@bendigoadelaide.com. au.

Little Leaf Kindergarten in Doonan

A LOCAL couple have opened a new nurturing space and community in Doonan. Little Leaf Kindergarten offers daily Waldorf and Steiner Early Childhood Programs for children between three and five. Experienced and highly trained early childhood and primary school Steiner educators, Kobi and Michael Caterer have taught in Steiner and Waldorf Schools nationally and internationally. Kobi told the Cooroy Rag they opened Little Leaf Kindergarten after moving back to Noosa and discovering the need for a Steiner program that supports families and children In a family oriented, community based space before the children are of school age. “Noosa is home. This is where we grew up and where our families are. After training at the Melbourne Rudolph Steiner School and teaching at the Brooklyn Waldorf School in New York and at Steiner schools in Noosa, Melbourne and Byron Bay, we moved back home and through talking to people here in the Steiner community, we realised there was a need for something else

in the three-to-five-yearold age group before preschool and prep.” Kobi and Michael had started planning their “little oasis amongst the trees” in Doonan for quite some time - with a beautiful inside space and separate outdoor spaces - they opened their doors to Little Leaf in February this year. “The biggest thing with Steiner early childhood is the rhythm of the day with children being held by the rhythmical elements and activities. “Each space nurtures this rhythm from free play, to morning circle time songs where movement is seasonal and relates to the natural world and helps with children’s development, to the seasonal stories that we tell and the daily activity that relates to the story such as baking, painting, expressive arts or modelling beeswax.” Since opening, Little Leaf Kindergarten has been hugely popular. “It is a natural progression for the community that people were asking for and naturally, there are a lot of people drawn to Steiner education and are therefore drawn to us.” On Mondays from 12.30

to 3.30pm, Kobi and Michael work with 10 to 12 children in Year 1 and 2 that are home schooling and wanting to weave Steiner Education into their week. “With this group, a lot of the work that we do is introducing the main lesson subjects and learning is interwoven into what they’re doing and seeing in the world around them through play, arts, and main lesson such as language arts, maths, form drawing, nature studies and handwork.” From Tuesday to Friday, Little Leaf provides a fullday Steiner program for six children aged between three and six per day. “The kindergarten program runs for six hours from 9am to 3pm and we provide morning and afternoon tea.” Spots at Little Leaf Kindergarten are available to anyone. There are no pre-requisites. “Whether they know Steiner or are new to Steiner or just wanting an alternative, they can book by calling 0419679474 or contacting us at littleleafkindergarten@gmail.com or via Instagram @____little.things____.

Construction starts on playground Clare Stewart Noosa Mayor

WORK has well and truly begun on the new Hinterland Adventure Playground in Cooroy. To support the new Hinterland Adventure Playground facility, Council is providing additional carparking and improving pathways. Council plans to award the tender for this work in May, with work likely to start late May. There will be 12 new carparking spaces on Maple Street, adjacent to Apex Park, and 22 new carpark spaces at the Lower Mill Heritage area, with pathway connections to the playground. There will also be two new disabled carpark spaces in Marara Street, next to the playground, and a new raised pedestrian crossing at Maple Street, between Apex Park and the Cooroy Library. We’ll be upgrading pathways to accommodate the new carparks and connect pedestrians into the playground and Cooroy town. There will be provision for ‘overflow’ car parking along Maple Street (catering for 22 vehicles), next to the Cooroy Tennis Club. More detailed information about the roadworks will be available shortly. Watch Council’s Facebook page at facebook.com/noosacouncil and the Major

Projects section of Council’s website noosa.qld.gov.au/major-projects. As we continue to focus our efforts on supporting the Kin Kin community, we have now issued the Kin Kin Quarry operators with over $160,000.00 worth of fines for alleged breaches of the quarry management plan. We’re continuing to work closely with the community to gather evidence for potential court action, and the roundtable I instigated in August 2020 with the support of Council, with community groups, police, Sandy Bolton MP and various other stakeholders continues to meet every six weeks. Added to this, Council’s engagement officer for Kin Kin has now increased his workload to full-time to further support the Kin Kin community going forward. This will help Council to better address additional Kin Kin matters, and other issues relating to the hinterland. Community satisfaction is key, and Council’s Community Satisfaction Survey is being conducted during the first week of May. An independent company will undertake the survey and it will involve interviews of 400 randomly selected Noosa residents. Council undertakes this survey every two years to check the levels of satisfaction within the community regarding our performance and services. We will always strive to do better, and this survey will enable us to better deliver on outcomes for our residents. Thanks to those who took the time to provide their thoughts as part of the 2122 budget consultation. Noosa Shire Council was one of only three councils

in Queensland who provided the ‘balancing the budget’ tool to their community to enable more engagement and transparency concerning the budget process. Similarly, face to face engagement between Councillors and community members was also a first and we are so grateful to all those residents who took time to access the tool online or visit with us. We received 67 submissions via the “balancing the budget” online engagement tool. Judging by the feedback, on average most people would like to see an increased investment in infrastructure and ongoing support for environment and sustainability initiatives, especially around fire management. A full report on the consultation is available on the Your Say Noosa website yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au.Residents are encouraged to take the time and read what was submitted. The next step is to put together the draft 21-22 budget, which will go out to the community for consideration towards the end of May. This will again be an opportunity for residents to have a say and let us know what they think about the document. Finally, Councillor Coffee chats are back in action. Our next Councillor Coffee Chats will be held on May 14. Councillors will be at Cooroy Harvest Fresh, Cooroy and Black Ant Café, Kin Kin. No need to book. Attend any of the venues from 9am to 10.30am on 14 May 2021. We would love to see as many of you there as possible. Until next month, stay safe, Clare.

THE Noosa Shire’s Women’s Collaborative Network (NSWCN) launch has been necessitated through the development of a project in my community to be delivered as part of my participation in the National Rural Women’s Coalition Canberra Muster 2021 intensive leadership program. The goals of the NSWCN is to establish a collective of women identified for their advocacy and credibility, to offer women’s leadership training programs through small group processes specifically designed to empower women wishing to actively invest in their own economic security via their unique leadership capacity and skill set. The Noosa Shire Women’s Collabora-

tive Network is committed to building an inclusive network of women with a single point of common ground to exchange information and narratives focussed on challenges, experiences and goals. As a local councillor, part of the role, I believe, is to promote the importance of engagement with our community to protect and enhance our lifestyle, to highlight the value of what matters most to our residents, ratepayers and visitors alike: the people who live, work and play in Noosa, who contribute to the building of connected, vibrant communities with shared identity and aspirations for a bright and sustainable future for all. Noosa Shire Council will continue to play an important role in helping the community achieve best social outcomes through policy development that recognises community needs while working in partnership with residents, local organisations and business owners in the best interests of the community expectations. Good governance is achieved through effective and efficient decision-making. Collectively we can and should be mov-

ing swiftly to ensure provision of affordable housing. Noosa Shire social plan supports strategic alliances with external agencies, businesses, community groups and individuals to achieve our collective goals. COVID-19 social and economic impacts highlight the need for supporting investment projects towards broader accessibility to affordable essential workers and disability housing. One of the limitations in the provision of affordable housing infrastructure is suitability of remaining land use for appropriate development in the Shire. Perhaps focussed discussions around infill housing may well be worthy of further exploration as one of the many possibilities in addressing the current housing crisis. columns What a month! Sandy Bolton State Member for Noosa WHAT a month it has been with so much to share, with both celebrations and commemorations prominent. Record numbers congregated at Cooroy and Tewantin cenotaphs to honour and remember those who forwent everything for the life and freedoms we now enjoy. Gratitude to the Cooroy Pomona RSL and Tewantin Noosa RSL Sub Branch teams, fellow speakers, participants, schools, volunteers and all who attended events or honoured on verandas and driveways for making this 106th Anzac Day truly unforgettable. Our housing crisis will see some allevia-

Fatality Free Friday Llew O’Brien Federal Member for Wide Bay THE Noosa region is home to more than 700 veterans who have served to protect our country, and we, as a nation, owe each of them a debt of gratitude. We also owe them adequate care and assistance,

tion with progress made on several fronts including legislation around secondary dwellings, and access to worker accommodation. It was fabulous to gather with former Brisbane Lord Mayor Sallyanne Atkinson, Mayor Clare, Susan Davies President of Sharing with Friends, and Joanna Blyth from AECOM regarding a co-housing project by women for women. In addition, the first ‘micro’ apartments are housing our hospitality staff, though we need many more to meet the demand with our businesses experiencing a severe staff shortage. So if you know any residents looking for work, please get them to contact any of our employment agencies. We continue to work to reduce the impacts of heavy haulage vehicles in our communities and are still awaiting a response from the Minister for the Environment regarding the need for a review of the criteria of the Environmental Authority, as well a draft from TMR of projected works on this following their service to our country. But as a nation, we have not delivered on our pledge to support them. Veterans are twice as likely to take their own life, and often struggle with PTSD and other mental health issues as a result. The recent announcement by Prime Minister Scott Morrison that there will be a Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide is the culmination of a lot of work by the veteran community, and it’s the start of an opportunity to right a terrible wrong. This is an issue that I’ve spoken about in Parliament, that I have raised with my colleagues in Canberra, and I am pleased that their voices will now be heard. We

POMONA Police Station OIC Sargent Dan McNamara spoke to Year 12 Noosa District State High School Social and Community Studies students about law enforcement and his role as a general duties officer for their studies on law in Australia. The Year 12 Social and Community Studies students were surprised to hear Mr McNamara’s dayto-day life as a police officer is far removed from the action-packed, high risk representations of the police often seen on crime television. Sgt McNamara told the students that he was initially drawn to the excitement and drama of working for the police, but he has since realised there is so much

more to the job than just police chases and catching “bad guys”. “It is a noble profession and it is good knowing that you are out there in the community, making a positive difference,” Sgt McNamara said. The students were surprised to find that the majority of the police call outs in the local community are related to domestic violence, usually fuelled by alcohol. “Generally speaking, Po-

mona is considered a relatively safe place to live. Compared to other parts of Australia, crime is very low, but domestic violence is very high,” Sgt McNamara said. The students found Mr McNamara’s presentation insightful and very useful for their upcoming Social and Community Studies assessment and for their own personal understanding of their rights and responsibilities as Australian citizens.

NOOSA Christian College students and staff have welcomed a new secondary building. The official opening of the complex addition to the College community was on 29 March. The double-storey building, linked to an existing secondary building and looking out onto sports fields and bushland, is a pivotal block for growth of achievement and engage-

ment. Noosa Christian College’s Secondary College Captain, Emily Drin-

nan said the building will provide opportunities for ‘Pathways to Success’. “It will be a space where students can work in a collaborative, flexible learning environment that will help them to develop skills and strategies such as critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, communication and self-efficacy relevant to their future employment.”

THIS May and June the Cooroy Butter Factory has two group exhibitions on show. The Creamery and Foyer exhibition, ‘Let’s Play Wild’ by Laura Vecmane and Ketakii Jewson and Brown and the Butterbox group exhibition ‘Landscape as Muse’ by five female Fraser Coast artists, Ann Brown, Kerry Harrison, Wendy Talbot, Sheena Walsh, Jo Williams. The two shows collectively showcase seven female artists who are uniquely responding to their natural environment, delving into

themes of ‘wild’ and ‘landscape’. The artworks are responses to the artists natural surrounds through a variety of 2D work, mixed media and sculpture. In ‘Let’s Play Wild’, the two artists explore: themes of playfulness and wildness in its many facets; the diverse roles of the feminine, the surrounding environment, and the many sensual experiences of daily life. In ‘Landscape as Muse’, the artists explore the theme of ‘Landscape’ as a word for topographies,

environments, outlooks, views, perspectives, vistas, aspects. The landscape, like people with different views, has expressions, various perspectives and different environments. But it has a sense of place that draws people to it. The group show will feature two dimensional and three dimensional artworks in a variety of media and style. The two exhibitions open Friday 7 May. Tickets are free but booking is essential via the website: butterfactoryartscentre.com.au/

Artistic fundraiser honour daughter lost too soon to ovarian cancer WHEN a local artist’s daughter was given months to live, she was granted a humanitarian visa to New Zealand. Jewel Polkinghorne arrived in Auckland in July 2020, after months of waiting for permission from the New Zealand and Australian Departments of Border Control and Immigration. Her daughter, Jessamy Ferguson, had married a New Zealander a year before and had settled near Wellington with her husband and two lovely young boys. She had suffered previously with health issues and now it had culminated in a terminal diagnosis. “Jessamy became involved in the fight to improve early detection and treatment of women with Ovarian Cancer which has a poor survival rate,” Jewel told the Cooroy Rag. “A large percentage have a life expectancy of less than five years after their diagnosis. The signs that show up persistently are bloating, fatigue, feeling full quickly, urinary frequency and pelvic, abdominal and lower back pain.

“She was a strong, sassy character. In her last months she took to social media, recording herself dancing to pop tunes a la Celeste Barber. She inspired other women in hospital to post their dances too, so they could all have a good laugh together. “In her youth she had attended St Thomas More Primary School and Sunshine Beach State High School and after graduating she went to Dunedin New Zealand where she studied to become a Geologist.” Knowing that quarantine would be quite a challenge, Jewel armed herself with her little art kit and produced some whimsical

and touching drawings in goauche and pen and ink on paper. It was only later in the year that she decided to put them together as a book and as a testament to Jessamy’s strength. Jewel’s book, A View From My Window (an artist’s perspective in quarantine) is a series of daily drawings and paintings that trace some of her thoughts as she waited in quarantine over the total of 28 days. Jessamy sadly passed away in late September 2020, aged 31. Heartbreakingly, her Australian family could not attend her funeral. “Her spirit, however, lives on and her will to improve research into this disease is something her family and friends are keen to continue,” Jewel said. May 2021 is dedicated to Ovarian Cancer Research Fundraising, so Jewel is having a morning tea and gouache painting lesson of pink proteas, Jess’s favourite, and she is also gifting her book to those attending. “It will be a fun get together in my studio at home on

Caloundra. Her work often features pathways to the beach, bringing all the joy and expectation, of venturing down that pathway through sunshine and shadows, or reflections of skies and clouds, again capturing an escape from your ordinary world. Gail has been a supporter of Wishlist Art Auction and her paintings are hung on the walls of the maternity unit at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. This exhibition showcases her love of both the pastel medium and of all things beach. 1 May to 2 June in the Carriage Room, 10 Station Street, Pomona.

Ridgewood Hall photographic competition ENTRIES for the Ridgewood Photo Fair annual photographic competition open on June 1. The fair, promoted by the Ridgewood Hall, displays over 200 photos on

the boards in the hall each year of the Fair. The competition is run in two categories; Junior (17 and under, to suit school students) and Open. The winning photo of the whole Fair (Open and Junior combined) in 2018 was won by a 12-year-old girl, and most creative photo was won by a 14-yearold boy. The kids’ creativity really came to the fore. We have always had great support from our local schools, and their

graphic arts teachers, so we look forward to placing your students’ work up on the presentation boards for judging at the Hall. (It may make an interesting student project!) The entry form can be found on roundtheridges. com. Entries close on 14 June and results are announced on 18 June.

THE Cooroy-Pomona RSL Sub Branch was very fortunate, if not blessed, to be graced with the wonderful voice of Ashleigh Rainer Mueckenberger at the 2021 Anzac Day Dawn Service at the Cenotaph, and after the march outside of the Cooroy RSL Club. Ashleigh has been volunteering to sing three times a year, traveling from Brisbane, for the Anzac Day, Vietnam Veterans’ Day and Remembrance Day Commemoration Services for the past 10 years. She sings the “Australian National Anthem”, the hymn “Abide with Me”, “Amazing Grace” and the “New Zealand National Anthem”, for which she had to

learn the Maori language. To prepare, Ashleigh rises at 2am to do her vocal warm ups prior to the Dawn Service. She said, “It is wonderful to see the services grow over time and the continued effort of the community, to make events like these possible. “I am honoured to be able to be a part of such a meaningful event that has brought the community together….” Growing up in Noosa, Ashleigh attended the Noosaville Primary School and High School at the Good Shepherd Lutheran College. For work, she attends auditions and has landed roles in film and television commercials.

Winners are grinners at fishing comp RAIN greeted eight competitors to the second round of our club comp, and only let up for around 40 minutes of the five hour comp. Our newest Junior member on his first fishing comp was dropped off by his dad Clint at 5.30am. Kayak in the water, fishing gear ready, rain gear on, and life jacket fitted, Bede was ready. He took on all the hints he could get from club members and when the bell went, he was off. Club members all had an eye on him from a distance making sure he was safe, ready to help if needed. Back at the weigh in, there were all the tales about the ones that got away, the ones that were caught, the lads talking about the type of lure or the bait they used, what they saw on the sounder and Bede taking in every word spoken. Much discussion concerned the sights you get to see while sitting on the water watching nature do its thing, such as eagles taking fish off the surface back to the nest for their breakfast, Saratoga breaking the surface looking to catch bugs or unsuspecting fingerlings, Cod busy chasing bigger fish and plenty of bird life putting most

of us fishers to shame. First place in the Junior category - Bede Davies, two Bass, an extraordinary effort in the conditions. He set himself up for fishing and it poured down rain most of the fishing comp. This young lad fished by himself the whole time, never filched and loved every minute of the day. He was stoked with his $25 voucher and another member gave him his $15 voucher as a reward to such determination. In the Senior category in fifth place Harry Van de Belt with two Bass; fourth Gary Kenzler with four Bass and taking out the big Bass of 44cm, third was Dan Manning with five Bass and one Catfish, second was Paul Fleming with five Bass and first was Michael Geary with five Bass, one Catfish and one Saratoga for the extra points. There were 33 Bass, two Catfish and one Saratoga. The average length for the Bass was 33.2 cm. If you’d like to join our club, we only fish once every two months so it’s not a big ask on your social life and we have lots of fun. Adults are required to hold a Fishing Permit, obtainable online or at the Post Office. We are a fish stocking

Katie Rose Cottage Charity Golf Day

FEDERAL Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Llew O’Brien and Assistant Minister for Defence Andrew Hastie met with representatives from the Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub-Branch to hear about the issues faced by Wide Bay veterans. “It’s important that veterans’ voices are heard so we can ensure the people who have served our country are getting the assistance and support they need, for veterans as they age, and also for younger ones as they transition from the defence service to civilian life, ” Mr O’Brien said. The purpose of the meeting was a listening tour to address any issues that members may have with regard to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. The terms of reference were also discussed. Veterans and their families, ex-service organisations, states and territories, peak bodies and other interested stakeholders are being encouraged to provide their input for the Terms of Reference for the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Minister for Defence Personnel Darren Chester said it was vital that all those involved in the Defence and veteran support system had their say through the Royal Commission.

“Over the coming weeks I will be undertaking a public consultation process to ensure the Royal Commission is focused and based on the experiences and perspectives of those who have been impacted by Defence and veteran suicide,” Mr Chester said. “Any member of the community or any organisation is able to provide their input regarding the broad themes released on Monday 19 April and I would encourage them to provide their feedback. “As part of this process it is important that all state and territories are involved and I have written to my counterparts in each jurisdiction to seek their assistance in consulting with the community. “We must all work together to ensure that this Royal Commission can start promptly and put us on the path to a better understanding of suicide in the serving and ex-serving community, and importantly, how we can continue to improve the supports available to service men and women, and their families.” Following consultation, all feedback will be provided to the Attorney-General’s Department which will lead the drafting of the Terms of Reference. Interested individuals, groups, peak bodies, ex-service organisations and community members are able to review the broad themes for consultation on the

DVA website and can contribute to the consultation process by emailing royalcommission@dva.gov.au. Mr Chester said the Government was committed to ensuring ADF members, veterans and their families had access to the support they need, when and where they need it, especially those who are vulnerable or at risk. “Importantly, I want to assure the Defence and veteran community that the Government will continue to prioritise the health and wellbeing of serving and ex-serving personnel and their families,” Mr Chester said. “For anyone who may find this process difficult, help is available and can make a difference. Current serving members can access support through their local Garrison Health Centre or by contacting the All Hours Support Line available 24/7 on 1800 628 036. “Open Arms — Veterans & Families Counselling provides support and counselling to current ADF members, veterans and their families and can be contacted 24/7 on 1800 011 046. “Those who wish to remain anonymous can also contact Safe Zone Support on 1800 142 072. “This is a free and anonymous counselling line established for veterans and their families who may have concerns about anonymity.”

During your free consultation with John Taylor your concerns will be listened to and he will answer any questions you may have. You will receive advice and solutions on your denture concerns.

6SHDNLQJ GLIÀFXOWLHV The denture may not be in proper position. There is movement of the denture causing cheek and tongue to struggle to form words and control the denture.

:ULQNOHV DURXQG WKH OLSV DQG PRXWK Denture has moved back in the mouth and no longer supports the lips. This may be due to bone loss and/or loss of skin elasticity (stretchiness) and moisture loss.

'HQWXUH VOLSSLQJ DQG PRYLQJ Due to shrinkage of the jawbone and surrounding gum tissues, the gums do not support the denture while speaking or chewing.

6RUH VSRWV LQ WKH PRXWK Pressure and/or rubbing occurring in one specvidic area is usually a result ofchewing but may also be due to clenching of teeth. Other causes may be hard foods (like small seeds) getting under the denture, or perhaps the denture teeth need adjusting.

'LIÀFXOW\ FKHZLQJ FHUWDLQ IRRGV Some foods may never be easy to chew with dentures, but lack of adequate chwing may be related to the alignment of your upper and lower dentures, or your denture with your natural teeth. This affects the balance of the denture on the tissues and muscles of the mouth. In combination with shrinkage of tissue, opoor alignment creates improper denture function. Everyone’s situation is uniquue and only by an assessment can a solution be found.

Have you heard? The hearing bus is coming to Cooroy A HEARING Australia bus is stopping by Cooroy and Noosa Libraries to offer free* hearing checks and raise hearing health awareness in the local community. The bus will be at Cooroy Library on Friday, 4 June from 9.30am to 1.30pm and Noosa Library on Friday, 25 June from 9.30am to 1.30pm. No appointments are necessary with Hearing Australia staff providing hearing checks to any interested adults over 18 who visit the bus on the day. As well as having a hearing check, visitors to the Hearing Australia bus can also find information on how to keep their hearing in good shape and view a display of easy-to-use hearing devices for around the home. Hearing Australia’s Principal Audiologist (Adults), Emma Scanlan said healthy hearing is a big part of life. “Good hearing plays a significant role in helping people stay active, happy and involved in the world around them.

Our buses travel around the country, not only visiting busy city centres, but also smaller regional towns where it might be difficult for people to get their hearing checked,” said Emma. With a 12-strong fleet of Hearing Australia buses, the mobile hearing service has provided over 175,000 free hearing checks in communities across Australia since the first bus service launched in 2009. The custom-equipped buses can operate in remote and harsh locations and are staffed by Hearing Australia teams trained to provide hearing checks and support for people with hearing loss, including ac-

cess to the latest high-quality hearing devices. With an estimated 3.6 million Australians affected by hearing loss, and this is projected to more than double to 7.8 million by 2060, meaning nearly one in every five Australians will be affected, a hearing check is a quick and easy way to help identify any hearing issues. For 72 years, Hearing Australia has provided world leading research and hearing services for the wellbeing of all Australians and is a Statutory Authority and the nation’s largest provider of government-funded hearing services.

Swimming success after COVID-19 IT has been a good 18 months since “Cooroy’s Super Fish” Clinton Stanley has competed in a swim meet due to lockdown and pool closure. Recently the Queensland Masters Championships were held as a three-day event at Kawana Aquatic Centre. Clinton competed in four events and swam extremely well considering the lack of race practice. It was great to see 300 competitors come along and enjoy the sport of swimming after not being able to compete due to COVID-19 restrictions. Looking back at Clinton’s times from September 2019 carnival, he swam faster times in 100m Freestyle and his 50m Butterfly. His coach Jan Croft from

Noosa Aquatic Centre was very pleased with Clinton’s performance. Clinton has been a member of Noosa Masters since 2003 and is now looking forward to his next carnival in June. He loves swimming and competing and is so happy being with his friends from Noosa Masters. Clinton loves the Sunshine Coast and being-

nearly 45, is always busy. He is back swim training and doing gym three days a week. He has been working as a casual for Wimmer’s – Noosa Beverages for 26 years, a Lifeguard at Sunshine Beach for 15 years, attends Sunshine Butterflies three days a week and also fits in golf once a week. Clinton still “Lives His Dream”.

Trio bounce into Queensland team AFTER a successful State Championships with the club winning seven medals, three gymnasts from the Cooroy Gymnastics Club have been selected to represent Queensland at the 2021 Australian National Championships. The trio of Dean Chandler, Lyam Chandler and Finlay Jones will make up a large part of the Queensland Level 9 team with coach Greg Smyth being selected as the Level 9 State Coach

for the event. The 10-day event on the Gold Coast from 20-25 May, will include the best gymnasts in Australia and

will also feature the Continental Challenge where the last men’s gymnastics place in the Tokyo Olympics will be decided.

OH, hay there! There are some interesting things that you may not know about me and I’d love to share these with you. Some of my paddock friends get fed in hay nets or buckets up off the ground because their owners think that this is best for us. Our digestive system is designed to graze on grass making it easier for us to swallow. Perhaps consider this the next time you put us in a float or a truck to take us on a trip

as there is something that troubles me. As much as we love our delicious hay nets strung up for us while we travel to keep us calm and happy, you may not be doing the right thing. You are right it certainly does make us happy because, well, food makes us happy but if we get a fright from other cars, headlights or just a loud noise right at the same time as we are swallowing, this could cause us to choke! Why this happens is because

when we travel and we’re eating, we have our head up instead of down where it normally would be when grazing. This causes food to go down the windpipe. This is more common than people think and although not always life threatening, it is a very uncomfortable position for us horses to be in. Some horse friends of mine have had serious scarring to their throat from this. Until next month!
