Pretty in pink in the precinct

Participants donned their pinkest outfits for the fun run trail to raise funds for breast cancer research THE Cooroy Future Group, in partnership with Noosa Library Service and the Friends of Mill Place hosted the Pink Precinct Fun Trail for the National Breast Cancer foundation this morning. Over 100 entrants paid a gold coin donation to enter, dressed in pink then embarked on a fun trail around Cooroy. All ages and fitness levels participated in the fun, with prams and canines joining in, in teams , or with new friends. Groups represented including staff and students from Noosa District High school, the local fire serv-

ice, after hours care and more came to help raise funds and awareness for the foundation. Year 9 student Blake Chapman took out first placing, sprinting through the trail and earning himself a Fitbit as his prize. Noosa Councillor Jess Glasglow was the second person to cross the line and he kindly donated his Fitbit prize to NDSHS Year 12 Coordinator Bridge Muir for being the first woman to complete the fun run. Rhys Lloyd received a voucher for being the

best dressed competitor. Personal stories of brave battles with cancer were shared and the pink trail participants were entertained with a tai chi demonstration at the completion of the event. All participants were reminded to take part in breast cancer checks, as cancer can does not discriminate or target a specific gender or age. A mobile Breast Screen service will be set up in Cooroy in late November. The local businesses generously sponsored the

event by donating prizes or by donating directly to the National Breast Cancer foundation. Sponsors included Cooroora Wood Workers, Camphor laurel group, Sandpit Kids, Cooroy Harvest Fresh, Hinteractive Physio, Live Life Pharmacy, Club Cooroy RSL, High Tea Licious, Cooroy Outdoor Power, Maison de Provence, E Fitness, Lake Ridge Health and Beauty, Lou Lou’s Hair and Mind, Belvedere News, Cooroy Shoes, Cooroy Drapery, Jamaica Blue, and United Synergies.

THE Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival was a huge success, with over 2,000 walkers climbing the mountain. The weather was ideal and the festivities at the base of the mountain only added to the success of the day. No event of this nature would be possible without assistance and, at the top of the list is Mr. Peter Lavin, who offered his total support. The Rotary Club of Cooroy acknowledges this, and together with our generous sponsors and hard working support team and the SES, the event is fast becoming a fixture on the calendar showcasing Cooroy. From the hayride, the Bush Poet, the McDermott Helicopter rides, rainforest walk, music, billy tea and damper, the crowd was exposed to non stop entertainment all day. Without our sponsors however, this would not be possible and we would like to acknowledge: A Action Traffic; Bendigo Bank; Cooroy Family Practice; Cooroy Mountain Spring Water; Cooroy Rag; Greenwood Grove; Madill Motor Group; McDermott Aviation; Mower and ATV Solutions Cooroy; Noosa Lifestyle Real Estate; The Rotary Club of Cooroy extends heartfelt thanks to the Community of Cooroy

What Christmas tree?

COUNCIL workers Julia Cruickshank and Damon Makieg (pictured left) had a lucky escape last Tuesday when they just missed out on getting run down by a 4 wheel drive as it slammed into the Christmas Tree on the Maple Street Roundabout. The pair had just been planting out some new greenery on the roundabout moments before the accident happened. Police are still investigating the cause.

Cooroy Library has been praised as one of the world’s best modern libraries COOROY Library is again making headlines, this time in India. Chennai’s Times City newspaper has named the 1600sqm Cooroy Library one of the world’s best modern libraries. It’s the second time Cooroy Library, which has a grassed roof, technology centre, digital training and community rooms, lounge, reading areas and café, has been in the international spotlight.

Earlier this year property and urban development industry news w e b s i t e TheUrbanDeveloper.com named Cooroy Library in its article Six of the World’s Coolest Modern Libraries. “We’re thrilled to see Cooroy Library again recognised as a world leader,” says Council’s Libraries & Galleries Manager Kerri Contini. “This publicity highlights just how well the library

meets contemporary community needs. One of the key elements of its success is the blend of modern technology, such as fibre optic internet and touchscreen smartboards, with the traditional human elements of a library, such as a sense of community and the sharing of stories and information. “Being mentioned alongside Finland’s Turku City Library and South Korea’s Nam June Paik Library is a great endorse-

ment for Cooroy Library.” The Times City front page article discusses libraries’ need to embrace technology to stay relevant, naming Cooroy Library in a list of five ‘global frontrunners’. In an Australian-first Noosa Library Service last year recruited a NAO humanoid robot to provide fun and practical robotics and computer programming training for adults and young people. The $18,000 robot,

funded by a grant through the State Library’s Technology Trendsetter 2015 funding program, is the face of the Library’s Robots for Everyone training program. “We’ve extended the technology program to include Tech Savvy training, coding instruction and workshops using smaller robotics and electronics as we continue to assist people in our community to develop the skills needed to use emerging technology.”

Volunteer to help develop new Arts & Heritage Plan RESIDENTS with a passion for the arts, culture and heritage are needed to create a new Arts, Culture and Heritage Plan for Noosa Shire. Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie said the aim was to help Noosa’s arts, cultural and heritage sectors grow and prosper. “The arts, in their many forms, and our heritage play a vital role in enhanc-

ing our quality of life and defining who we are. We need to nurture them,” Cr Wilkie said. “This new plan will spell out ways to get more people involved and build the skills of existing heritage, cultural and arts organisations. “The plan aims to help strengthen our creative arts industries and identify how we can best honour and

preserve our heritage,” Cr Wilkie said. “Experience tells us that the best way to develop a plan like this is to engage with the community. We’re inviting residents to nominate to work alongside people from state government, the education sector and our Council.” Reference group members will need to attend five or six meetings be-

tween December 2016 and September 2017, with the possibility of completing some tasks outside of meeting times. To be considered, email an outline of your experience and interests in Noosa’s arts, culture and heritage to commdev@noosa.qld.gov.au by COB 14 November 2016. “The reference group will

Is your deck ready for Christmas?

THERE are a hundred and one ways to honour a loved one but Cooroy has an extra special way this Christmas. Back due to popular demand, the Christmas in Cooroy ‘Sponsor a Star’ is a unique and heartfelt way to show you love someone during the Christmas period. Each year Ricon Contractors decorate the beautiful tree on the roundabout at Emerald & Maple Streets which stands as a beacon of holiday spirit for many of the Cooroy residents. The Cooroy community is always extremely proud of the beautiful Christmas Tree which is turned on in an official ceremony on Friday 2nd December. This year the tree will again be host to eight beautiful stars sponsored by various residents for their loved ones. The stars can be used for purposes such as memorialising a loved one who is no longer with us, being dedicated to those who can’t be with us during the festive season, or simply being dedicated to someone special who deserves recognition. Accompanying each star will be a beautiful memorial story which will be mounted near the tree on the wall of Club Cooroy

RSL. There are only limited spots with six stars that are still available for sponsorship at $200. If you are interested in dedicated a star to a loved one then head to www.christmasincooroy.com.au to find our more information or email admin@cooroy.com.au. Christmas in Cooroy is a free event hosted by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Cooroy and would not be possible without the overwhelming support of volunteers and funding partners: Ricon Contractors, Noosa Council, Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank, Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group, Cooroy Rag, Cooroy SUPA IGA, Mower & ATV Solutions, Madills Motor Group, Cooroy Hotel, Hinterland Dental Group, Live Life Pharmacy, CJ Taxation Services, Gelignite Jacks, Club Cooroy RSL, Queensland Media Print, Firefly Solutions, Cooroy Fish ‘n’ Chips, The Leather Doctor, Cooroy Family Practice, Cooroy Pest Control, NoosaCare Inc, Suttons Cleaning Service, Master Hire Cooroy, Sunshine Mitre 10 and Zinc 96.1FM.

Workshop to consider Cooroy Memorial Hall’s future COUNCIL will hold a community workshop this month to consider the future of the Cooroy Memorial Hall. At last week’s Ordinary Meeting, Council agreed to take over from Cooroy RSL as trustee of the Hall. The Hall has been closed for some time because of safety concerns. Mayor Tony Wellington is calling on residents to join councillors and Council staff at the brainstorming session. “Restoring the Hall is certainly an option,” Cr Wellington said. “But if the community decides the land could be better used, perhaps as a memorial park or a playground, then we’ll happily look at those ideas too.” “A recent building inspection revealed that we’d need to spend around $400,000 on the hall just to get it to a safe condition,” the Mayor said.

“To restore the building properly, and give Cooroy a hall it can truly be proud of, we’d need to spend between $800,000 and $1 million.” Cr Frank Pardon also believes it is important that the community has a say on the Hall’s future. “Let’s be honest, historically the Hall was an important part of the social life of Cooroy. But over the last few decades it hasn’t been properly maintained and it has been used less and less. “If the cost to reopen it was $100,000 I wouldn’t blink. I’d say to Council ‘let’s fix it up and open the Hall as soon as possible’. But with the cost potentially up around the $1million mark, we need to think carefully about the Hall’s future. That’s why we need to find out what the community wants and be absolutely sure that there is a real need for the building,” Cr Pardon said. The public workshop on

Councillors held their Ordinary meeting at The Hub in Cooroy last with with the future of our hall one of the agenda items Saturday, November 26, will start at 9.30 am. It will be held in the Cooroy State School hall, 59 Elm Street, Cooroy. “We’ll start the workshop with a brief update and then residents can put forward their own ideas,” Cr Wellington said. “They can also discuss those concepts with councillors and Council staff. And if there are any would-be benefactors interested in helping get

25% OFF

the hall open and operating, we’d love to hear from them.” The community built Cooroy Memorial Hall in 1926 in memory of soldiers killed in the Great War. Since 1979 the Cooroy RSL has been trustee of the Hall. In recent years it has fallen into a state of disrepair, and was closed in November 2015. “Although there are some

constraints regarding the use of both the land and the building, we are very keen to gauge what the Cooroy community’s priorities are. This is about Council working with residents to achieve the best possible outcome for everyone. The consultation process worked well with the Cooroy Butter Factory and I believe it can work for the Memorial Hall as well,” Mayor Wellington said.

The Choice The most worst or the least worst! Did you ever see anything like the American election? A performance which is beyond any normal comprehension. The whole nation is embarrassed, I’d believe they’re ashamed, And they are the only ones that can be blamed. The media has lashed Trump with dangerous ridicule and fun, While Hilary tries to look cute, and to please everyone. The whole campaign has been nothing but ugly brawling, Churlish, stupid, unacceptable personal name calling. The people of America must be in a hapless fix, Suffering from a glut of such bewildering politics. The election I fear is a sign that the country is a-changing, That America needs some serious re-arranging. The whole thing has been shameful, degrading, the politics of hate, Unfitting in a nation which is proud and truly great. I think they are really flummoxed as they seem to be, Who do they sincerely vote for, Tweedledum or Tweedledee? Affectionate - Addicted to being a nuisance. BOUQUETS & BRICKBATS It seems a little to easy to criticise the actions of young people in the Cooroy area. There are better and worse in all groups, so perhaps a gentle brickbat to those prone to making generalised complaints. At Lake Macdonald Park, around 1 pm on Saturday, 4 carloads of young p platers arrived and the young men of the group set about creating a feast on the barbies. The unusual thing was that after cooking, one of the young men took to cleaning the barbies with some vigour. Water from the adjacent tap, a couple of cloths and a fair amount of elbow grease had them looking their best....a final clean up of the area saw these young people leave the area looking better than they had found it. Well done guys....if only many older people followed your example! An example for the rest of us in public recreation areas....leave them at least as clean as you find them please? DO you want to know how happy Noosa Shire residents are? Well, the Mayor does. Mayor Tony Wellington is calling for Noosa residents to participate in a regional survey that will help establish Noosa’s overall wellbeing. “If one were to summarise the role of council, it could be argued that our true purpose is to support the wellbeing of our residents,” Cr Wellington said. “In many ways that is council’s focus. Whether it’s through improving services, supporting community groups, providing the best facilities or encouraging appropriate development, fundamentally council seeks to make decisions that help residents enjoy their lives. “I think it’s therefore important for us to see how our community feels about living here in Noosa. This will also give us a benchmark to determine our progress in the future.” The survey, run and analysed by the University of Canberra, will create specific data for Noosa. If over 100 responses are received, the University can also compare the Noosa findings with other local government areas. “Completing this survey will provide an opportunity for us to hold a mirror to ourselves. It will ask big questions such as how we feel about our society, our health, our access to services and more,” the Mayor said. “Governments tend to use statistics such as employment levels, economic growth and GDP to measure success. All of these measurements really underpin one overwhelming aim, and that is to maintain or improve the wellbeing of citizens.” The University of Canberra’s mission in running the Regional Wellbeing Survey is to support research that improves the wellbeing and quality of life of people living in rural and regional Australia. Everyone aged 18 or over who takes part in the survey can enter the draw to win one of 20 prizes worth a total of $9,000. “The more residents who participate, the more accurate the overall results will be. I am really looking forward to finding out how Noosa’s happiness levels compare with other regional locales,” Cr Wellington said. To fill in the survey, or for more information, visit http:/ /www.regionalwellbeing.org.au/.

Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy SO what does it mean to be a community of communities? As we know, Noosa is a collection of towns. Sometimes we live and work independently but more and more, we’re connecting to make great things happen. Events and celebrations, and sometimes to make decisions for the benefit of everyone. Connecting is a choice and generally comes with a good idea everyone buys into. As customers, we make choices every day - where to buy our food, petrol and where we get the best service from someone who listens and identifies with us. What about when a bank says it has a connection with its community? Does it make you suspicious or feel there must be a catch? Bendigo Bank at Cooroy and Pomona is locally owned by our shareholders. It has now returned more than $600,000 to local schools, clubs and organisations in the past few years. How local? To use one example, we’ve been a sponsor of the

Noosa Billy Cart Grand Prix at Noosa Christian College for a few years now. Why are we sponsoring them? Because we wouldn’t be here without their support…your support. Through our customers’ banking we generate profits that go into supporting recipients just like the Noosa Billy Cart Grand Prix. It’s why our team loves coming to work each day and why we’re growing with our community. Our hinterland based Community Bank branches are giving our community a real say in its own future. We believe successful customers and successful communities create a successful bank in that order. As we work

to provide banking products and services for our customers, we consider the bigger picture. So, if you’re interested in banking where the customer is connected to the bank, give us a try. We have a full range of products just like any full service bank and you’ll become more aware of work we do where it matters most. Our team will be more than happy to share more of our story with you and deliver the right advice and the products you need. Please feel free to drop into the branch or call me on 5447 7131 (Cooroy), 5485 1786 (Pomona) or you can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

news How to make working later in life work for you

COOROY RAG

Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* THE relationship between work and retirement is changing. Nowadays we expect a lot more from our later years than previous generations-we’re no longer satisfied with treading water and we want to go freestyle. But with the pension qualification age increasing1 , people living longer2 and concerns about whether we have enough money in our super, we may have to work longer to generate enough income to maintain our lifestyle and enjoy a comfortable retirement3 . For an increasing number of Australians working longer in life doesn’t mean continuing on the 9-5 treadmill. They are making an active choice to go freestyle, match their career with their passion and continue playing a meaningful role on their own terms. So after years putting the family first, now’s the time to think about your needs and how best to combine your working income with your retirement savings. Ways to help you make working longer work for you •Change the way you work—think about going part time, job sharing or

consulting. •Maintain your employability by marketing your expertise—network and become your own brand. •Pass on your knowledge to the next generation by mentoring young Australians through a programme like Elderberry. •Tap into your inner entrepreneur and join Australia’s growing band of seniorpreneurs by starting your own business. •Talk to a retirement coach about how to move from a full time job to part time work, a small business or retirement. •Don’t price yourself out of the market—consider taking a pay cut for the right move. •Rather than jumping straight from full-time work into retirement think through the consequences for your health, social contacts and finances—and how you could make the transition easier, working part time for example. Government regulations about what you can do and when •At 50 you may be able to pay more into your super from your before-tax salary—up to $35,000 pa**. •At 56, you may be able

to start a transition to retirement strategy to reduce your working hours and maintain your after-tax income. •At 60, if you can access your super, it should be tax-free. •And once you’re eligible for the age pension, you can access the Work Bonus, which allows you to keep more of your income or work for short periods with little effect on your pension. Restrictions that can apply •At 65, you can no longer bring forward two years’ worth of after-tax super payments to make a total contribution of up to $540,000**. •And you may be unable to access workers’ compensation or insurance cover following a workplace accident. If you’d like to know

more about how to structure your work, lifestyle and finances so that you can go freestyle, talk to us on 07 5447 7740 or email advice@provisionwealth. com.au. 1. http://www.human services.gov.au/customer/ enablers/centrelink/agepension/payment-ratesfor-age-pension 2. Preservation age rises to 56 from 1 July 2015 for those born after 1 July 1960 - while for those born after 1964, the preservation age will rise incrementally to age 60. ** As part of the 2016 Federal Budget, the Fed-

eral Government has proposed to reduce the concessional contributions cap to $25,000 p.a., and reduce the bring forward amount to a maximum of $300,000, i.e. $100,000 p.a (transitional arrangements may apply to the bring forward amount). *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 004. COOROY RAG THE 13th annual Noosa Billy Cart Grand Prix wasn’t for the faint hearted. event. But once the helmets went on and the flag was raised, the competition was on. Both elected officials participated in a race to kick start the event. It was Peter (Wellington) who took home the trophy – presented by event sponsor, Geoff Edwards from the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, and it was all in aid of raising funds for the college. Races for all ages ran throughout the day and the kids surely slept well after a lot of pushing. When not racing, students were kept entertained by the carnival atmosphere – fairy floss, camels, face painting, balloon twisting, a mechanical bull and various inflatable activities kept kids busy and happy all day. While the kids were playing, parents were able to browse the Mon-

ster Garage sale and various market stalls or simply sit in a shady spot sipping a coffee. The Noosa Billy Cart Grand Prix has gone from strength to strength in recent years and is proud to be an attraction that draws even interstate visitors to the Sunshine Coast. Many local businesses have proudly sponsored Noosa Billy Cart Grand Prix over the years. This year the major sponsors included the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, Living Valley Springs Health Retreat and Gympie Eye Centre. Thoughts now turn to the Noosa Billy Cart Grand Prix 2017 and getting the word out. Anyone interested in getting involved in the 2017 event can go to: www.noosabillycart.com or email billycart@ noosacc.qld.edu.au

Cooroy RV Park popular THE Cooroy RV Park has been very popular with hundreds of visitors pulling in for a short stay and using it as a base to explore Noosa and our hinterland. As the Park is still on trial until January 2017, Caretaker Dave has set up a letterbox for travellers to drop their shopping dockets into so we can get a rough idea of what money is being spent in and around our town. For the month of September these

added up to a total of $10,750. Not bad! The Cooroy RV Park website also has some great comments from our visitors such as this one: “First time here and stayed for 3 nights to visit friends. Fantastic spot, all travellers need … water available, dump point, spacious grassy area and 5 minute walk to beautiful Cooroy. Noosa Council keep it open, we will be back.”

They are looking forward to becoming a big part of the local community. “It’s been my dream to live, teach and train horses in such a beautiful property like Silver Horse Park and the town of Cooroy is ideal to bring up our two young girl,” says Sally. The former Australian Dressage representative is bringing her fresh training techniques into the her new Riding School at Silver Horse Park, Cooroy and she is now available for lessons. Whether it’s on one of her special educated school horses, Buddy or Marley, on your own horse, or at your own property, Sally is results driven and has the perfect nature to help you develop as a rider through building skills and confidence. “I recently left a very successful business teaching children, adults and competition riders at my

parent’s property in Terrey Hills, Sydney. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or compete at the highest level, I can help develop your riding skills and bring the best out of any rider. I’ve been lucky enough to be trained by some of the best coaches in Australia and I know my coaching is successful as reflected in the results and beautiful testimonials I received when I left Sydney. I simply love coaching and riding,” she said. Silver Horse Park is a stunning 6 acre equine training facility just 4kms from the town centre of Cooroy. It boasts a beautiful 60x30m all weather arena with viewing platform, 8 paddocks, stables, wash bays and even a horse swimming dam. “Silver Horse Park ticked all the boxes for my family and I to make the big move to Queensland and to continue my coaching and training. We have quickly fallen in love with this dream property and wonderful town of Cooroy. It feels right!”. Sally is a Former Young Australian Rider of the Year and FEI Dressage Rider who has competed in many State and Australian Championships with great results over the past 20 years. Sally also trains horses from young ages through to FEI level. She is rated so highly by her clients in Sydney that they even sent two young horses with her to keep training in Cooroy. In particular, Sally has fallen for one of these young horses, a 3 year old Warmblood, TS Skyfall by 007 (pictured). “I’ve been given the amazing opportunity to develop this beautiful young gelding from scratch and take him as far as I can in competition. I’m really excited about competing in Queensland on Skye. Being such a young horse, Skye already shows great potential”. Together with her husband Rod a former Parramatta NRL player and personal trainer they have set up Silver Horse Park to be a quality equine coaching and training facility. Sally is now available for lessons ($60 per hour), horse development, and school holiday camps. Call 0416 142 362 or email sally@sallycollinsdressage.com.au

the charm of Cooroy was calling “When we heard the beautiful old bank building shop was becoming available we decided the timing was right for us to relocate to Cooroy,” said Susan. “We have met so many lovely locals since opening our doors last week and we are looking forward to meeting more people as they visit the shop. We are offering the same range of services as we did in Coolum including designing, manufacturing, repairs and remodelling of jewellery.” So If you have been saving your jewellery repairs or safely storing bits and pieces of broken or unworn jewellery in your jewellery box waiting for a Jeweller to arrive, then now is the time to bring them out again.

PAUL and Susan Underwood have opened their jewellery shop, Bold as Love, in Maple Street. After successfully trading in Coolum Beach for 15 years and seeing a number of changes, the couple decided it was time for a new chapter and

Family Law Issues in the digital age DURING times of separation and divorce, tensions often run high. These times are often fraught with intense emotions and, if left unchecked, these emotions can lead to potential trouble for you and your family law matter. Communicating with your partner during these times, whether in person, by text message, through social media or email, must be done in a calm and professional manner. Oversharing can be too easy when disclosing personal information in these instances, and can happen as fast as a push of a button, or a rhetorical snide remark. To avoid potential missteps, it is beneficial to take that extra second and think before you act. Here are a few simple “dos and don’ts” when it comes to managing your digital presence during a separation or divorce: DO Read Over Messages Before Sending Them: Sending an emotional message may feel like a relief in the moment, but it can have serious repercussions in Court. Take a step back and ask yourself if what you intend to send is something you would be okay with a Judge seeing in Court. Anything you send can be traced back to you, and the long-term consequences may not be worth the short-term satisfaction. Always take the “high” road: No matter the attitude or comments of your partner, you should always endeavour to keep yourself above being drawn into verbal or social media “wars”. Communicating with your partner in times of separation or divorce should be approached in a professional manner. It is tempting to mud-sling, particularly with children involved, but stay away from this type of communication. Always take the “high” road approach to communication, whether in person or digitally, no matter how difficult it may seem. DON’T Forward Emails from Your Lawyer: Passing on communication from your lawyer to others may waive your privilege to keep conver-

sations with your lawyer private and confidential. Only send lawyer-client communications on to others if it is first approved by your lawyer. DO Use Social Networking Sites Cautiously: According the Australian Bureau of Statistics there are now approximately 24 million Australians, with 15 million of those having a Facebook account. This means 62.5% of the total Australian population has a Facebook account. Accessing Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr is easier than ever via your computer, smartphone, tablet, or laptop. You should assume everything you post online can be accessed by your partner or your partner’s lawyer, regardless of security features or privacy settings. Remember, that once something is online, it is essentially impossible to fully remove it. DON’T Break Into Your Spouse’s Personal Information: Using electronic surveillance programs to “check-up” on your spouse may seem wellintentioned and harmless to a degree, but the fruits of such efforts are potentially useless when it comes to the Court of law. The same often applies to unauthorized access to your spouse’s email accounts. In truth, these actions may subject you to civil and criminal penalties, and further, this information may be inadmissible in Court. DO Secure Your Devices and Accounts: If your spouse knows or could guess your passwords, it is time for these details to change. Reset all passwords on your computers, email accounts, smartphones, tablets, and other online accounts. Often some of these features “automatically” let you sign in. It may be wise to refrain from pressing the “remember me” button. It is also a good idea to turn off the location settings on your mobile device. Be sure to “unfriend” persons on Facebook that may be giving information to your partner, and change your privacy settings. For more information phone SPM Law on 5440 4800.

Katherine, who works for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games organising committee, was born and raised in Zimbabwe and emigrated to Australia with her family in 2001. FIVE-PIECE Noosa shire-based band The Claptomaniacs will make its debut performance at Cooroy RSL on Saturday November 12, from 7pm. If you have fond memories of UK and US music from the likes of Eric Clapton (incl Layla, Tears in heaven, Change the World), Steely Dan (incl Black Friday, Hey Nineteen), Joe Cocker (incl Leave your hat on, You are so Beautiful) as well as classic material from the Doobie Brothers, the Rolling Stones and more, this show is for you. The Claptomaniacs have developed a topdrawer reputation across the Sunshine Coast for their high-quality covers, capturing the hearts of those who appreciate great musicianship - and those who also appreciate great dance music. They are also one of the tightest sounds around, with one venue boss saying he had “not heard such a tight sound in 30 years of club manage-

ment”. “The key to the band is we avoid doing material that gets played to death on radio, instead finding numbers that people will know, but probably not heard live for some time,” band drummer and Lake Macdonald resident Alan Lander said. And he’s not the only local in the band. Claptomaniacs also features Cooroy resident Kenny Gamble on lead vocals, who has the gifted ability to handle Clapton, Cocker and Jagger among many others. “We are looking forward to playing the RSL; we haven’t played in Cooroy since our appearance at Cooroy Fusion Festival last May. The RSL will of course be laying on great food and bar service, and entry is free. IT’S heading towards the busy travel season and many of us will be heading out on a road trip. Whether you’re driving a short distance or across the country, here are some tips to ensure that your car is prepared for your next adventure. Schedule a checkup. Perform basic maintenance on your vehicle before you head out such as checking wipers and fluid levels. Also, schedule any necessary service such as oil changes or tune ups. A vehicle in top shape will have a better chance of staying reliable and efficient. Stay charged. Check your battery to make sure it’s strong and has clean terminals: A little baking soda and water will do the job. A road trip is no fun if your car won’t start. Read the rubber. Inspect your tires for any tears or bulges in the side wall. The tyres should have a good amount of tread left. Make sure the tyre pressures are right. Have your mechanic inspect your car’s brake pads to make sure they aren’t worn or need replacing. Check your vehicle’s load capacity to make sure you aren’t putting too much weight in the car. Be aware that fuel economy is reduced with extra cargo. Roof-top cargo boxes should only be filled with light bulky items. Heavy loads on the roof can make the vehicle more difficult to handle in emergency situations and increase the risk of a roll over. Be patient. During busy travel times expect to hit traffic. It may make sense to drive late at night or early in the morning to avoid the rush and ensure you get to your destination on time and with minimal stress. Make sure you count on stops for refreshment and restroom breaks, and time your fuel stops to ensure you don’t run low. A GPS device with traffic information and an exit guide can help you navigate around congestion and help find desired pit stop locations. Be safe. Make sure you are driving safely and follow the rules of the road. Happy travels!

Pomona Pacers eagerly joined into the fundraising cruise for Breast Cancer Research. NOOSA River and Canal Cruises have once again donated their craft, their time and their expertise to help our Cooroy community fundraise for Breast Cancer Research. For four years now, Gary and Kym Logan have supported the Cooroy lady golfers in their efforts to top up the money raised during their “Tee off for Breast Cancer Research” golf day. Champagne flowed and tapas were passed around as this group of merry makers sang to the tunes of yesteryear.

What better way to enjoy a full moon cruise on the beautiful Noosa River watching the sun set to the west while the moon rises to the east? The Pomona Pacers were keen to help too, so were quick to book their seats on board. A good decision as the boat was quick to fill. Many dollars were raised in just over an hour for Breast Cancer Research. It is wonderful to see the community getting behind this fundraising effort to help those we know and love affected by breast cancer.

pomona A Kin Kin celebration 100 years in the making

COOROY RAG

(l-r) Ella Hawkins, Karl Doss, Trent Shaw, Anita Poteri-Auckland, Geoff Edwards and Isabella Higgs give the thumbs up last Sunday THE calendar had been circled for a long time, but the centenary celebrations at Kin Kin State School honoured the past and looked to the future. The iconic school already boasts a strong sus-

tainable living program that ensures the nurture of students for today and tomorrow, but last week’s events gave the 67 students at the school memories that will last another 100 years. The centenary celebrated

four schools over the 100 years that have now become the one school as we now know it today Kin Kin State School, Kin Kin Junction School, Moran Group School and Wahpunga School.

Last Sunday, young and old celebrated together and four models of the four schools were on show after being created in scale form for the celebrations. These were sold on the day, but purchased by the Kin Kin Community Group for $500 for the school to have for display for future school students. Famed businessman, Tom Grady was on hand to be auctioneer for the day and added his usual energy and personality to proceedings. Celebrations started with the opening of the time capsule from the 75th birthday celebrations, where everyone who attended the school in 1991 wrote a letter to themselves. The past students came from everywhere and the stories flowed, mostly on of the value of a good Noosa hinterland education.

One of those attending was Karl Doss, who attended Kin Kin State School with his sister, Valeta. Nowadays, Karl works for the Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank. Manager, Geoff Edwards was also on hand to support the event. Principal, Trent Shaw says he thinks about 500 were in attendance and was pleased so many marked the occasion by taking their own photos and sharing in the many ways Kin Kin State School gave them a great start in life. Testing your body composition THERE is often more to health than meets the eye, and new technology is now available to get detailed information on metabolic health and body composition. Jodie Persovic, Dietitian and Naturopath, says ‘data on cellular heath, energy levels and changes in fat and muscle mass allow us to focus treatment and to see results clearly over time’. Testing is simple, safe and painless: leads connected to the hands and feet pass a very mild electric current through the body. Advanced software is then used to generate a detailed report. The equipment Jodie uses has been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) as an accurate testing device. There are many devices around that claim to measure similar health parameters, however, the results can be unreliable. Benefits of regular exercise YOU already know the physical benefits of exercise: better health, reduced risk of potentially serious disease, lower blood pressure and a welltoned body. Exercise carries emotional and social benefits as well. People that exercise regularly are more likely to classify themselves as happy than those that don’t. Regular exercise can reduce both anxiety and depression. Both conditions can improve with regular activity, and exercise may have a greater positive impact on those that are very anxious or very depressed than in those with mild forms of these disorders. Exercise raises levels of serotonin, endorphins and other chemicals that have a calming, anti-depressive effect. When you feel better physically, you are more likely to feel better emotionally as well. Regular exercise can help you to sleep better, may give you more energy and can help you to tighten and tone various areas of your body, causing you to look better in your clothing. All of these can make you feel more alert and may raise your self-esteem. The endorphins that boost your mood can

Page 18 - Cooroy Rag, November 2, 2016

also boost your concentration skills. This can allow you to focus more clearly on your relationships, your job or your schoolwork, which may add to your feelings of self-confidence. As your emotional health and self-esteem improves, your social relations may also improve. You may be more likely to reach out to others due to your increased self-confidence. Also, participating in a sport or fitness class will introduce you to new people that share a common interest. Meeting others may be the first step toward establishing new friendships and developing a support network. Make A Difference Health & Fitness in Cooroy run small group classes at various times of the week so you can benefit from all the points mentioned above. Treated as an individual you will receive a program that is specific to you so you are exercising at a level that is appropriate to you. COOROY RAG

ADRIAN Williams, swim school operator at Eumundi Aquatic Centre, has been coaching/teaching swimming for over 20 years and has been involved in several highly successful swim programs. He has been assistant coach to Olympic greats Michael Klim, Gianne Rooney and Grant Hackett as well as coaching his own swimmers to Australian Open teams and Paralympic Teams.

“We all know the importance of water safety and the swim safe message has been getting out there for a while now but there are many benefits of learning to swim outside of water safety,” said Adrian. “As a swim school operator for almost 15years I know the social, physical and psychological benefits of swimming lesson. However Griffith University has recently concluded a 4 year

study in the effects of early childhood swimming lessons. The project focused on the under-5s and employed a number of research strategies to formally explore a strong observation by coaches and teachers in the swim industry that young swimmers are more confident, more articulate, more social and perhaps even a little ‘smarter’ than their nonswimming peers. Adrian advises not to just rely on your child’s primary school to teach your child to swim. “In most primary schools in Qld swimming in term 4 is the norm. Most school programs run for a maximum of 10 lessons each running for 45 to 60mins. In that time you might have 10-15 students to an instructor. Thus giving your child up to 6mins of individual attention per class (if they are good instructors), Over 10 lessons at the most that’s 60mins of teaching time every year. Is that going to be enough to have your child water safe? Water safe as determined as being able to swim 100m un-assisted. If you decide to send your kids to a swim school, Adrian has a

checklist to ensure you choose the right one the first time: A swim School should run all year round; It should be safe and comfortable; It should be heated and for children under 7 enclosed from the elements; The School should have small class numbers; Your Swim school should have a universal Teaching program; The School should have qualified Staff who attended regular in-service training and update their skills; Infants (under 3yrs) are taught by specialist Infant aquatic instructors. Eumundi Aquatic Cen-

tre has lessons 6 mornings a week for under school aged and infants. With 5 afternoons a week for school aged for all ability levels. Parents are welcome to observe classes free of charge to determine if it is suitable for your family. Contact Ange at Eumundi Aquatic Centre on 54427186 or Ange@eumundi aquaticcentre.com.au to determine the best time for your child. Don’t forget to mention the Cooroy Rag to receive a free pair of goggles and swim cap for your little one.

Cooroy Probus THE Probus Club of Cooroy ventured down to Bribie Island for the day to spend a relaxing 3 hours cruising the Pumistone Passage with the Ferryman. The overcast conditions did not dampen our spirits. The crew on the Ferryman entertained us with snippets of history beginning in 1899 with Flinders sailing these waters in the Norfolk to the present day environmental policies put in place to protect this magnificent waterway. A great lunch kept us quiet for a while and a jolly good time was had by all on board. Cooroy Probus still has a few vacancies for anyone wishing to join. Enquiries John 5485 0415.

COOROY Cougars captain Ryan lost the toss and Maleny sent us into bat. After a few wickets fell, Braydon and Jackson put together a 100 run partnership. Followed by a great batting effort

from Troy and Christian. We were all out for 213. Maleny went into bat and through some great fielding from all boys especially Marty and Riley, they were out for 98. After changing up the batting order, we lost 3 quick wickets. With Oscar, Ryan and Zac making some great shots finding the boundary many times each to get us to an extra 104. We started the 2nd bowling innings with Lachie on a hat trick in the first over. With some great fielding from Jack stopping boundaries, we held Maleny to an extra 85. Great team effort by all boys and an outright win.

Golf: Nomads donate $20,000 to NDSHS THE Noosa District State High School Support Unit received a donation of $20,000 from the Sunshine Coast Nomads Golf Club, which was raised by 82 social golf club players. The golfers will be donating the money to the NDSHS Support Unit to help fund a mini bus for the students. The money raised is an increase of over $6000 from last year and was mainly funded by a charity golf day held at Twin Waters Golf Course on August 26. The rest of the money raised came from a raffle the club held throughout the year as

well as donations from the club members themselves. NDSHS School Principal Chris Roff was overwhelmed with the amount raised by the Nomads Golf Club. Nomads Golf Club is an International group, with 360 members in Australia, who all enjoy golf, whilst raising money for charity. The Nomads on the Sunshine Coast have 82 members who play once a month at different venues across the coast. To find out more, visit the Nomad’s website: www.nomadsgolfaustralia.com

World Title and TKO for Impact IMPACT Boxing Academy boxer Tyler Blizzard travelled with coach Mark Evans to Launceston Tasmania two weeks ago to compete on the undercard of the Daniele Geale v Ronald Quinlan World Title Fight. Tyler who originally hails from Launceston was the main event on the undercard. Tyler’s opponent was the big punching Bradley Collins from NSW. In what was described as the fight of the night, Tyler was awarded the victory by way of a unanimous points decision. “Tyler boxed the best he has ever boxed. Bradley Collins had a height and reach advantage over Tyler so our plan was to be evasive and attack from different angles. Everything that we have been working on in the gym leading up to this fight, Tyler put into play perfectly. He is currently a real chance to gain selection for the Commonwealth games in 2018 at 52kg,” Coach Mark Evans said. Lachine Proctor has made a statement on debut for Impact Boxing when he climbed into the ring last weekend at the Caboolture Boxing Club’s tournament. From the opening bell Lachie set the pace forcing his opponent onto the back foot as he pressed forward landing some big shots. It wasn’t long before the referee intervened and gave Lachie’s opponent a standing 8 count. Rnd 2 saw

Tyler Blizzard centre after his World Title Fight win Lachie move straight to centre ring to continue dominating his opponent. Midway through the round the referee had seen enough and was forced to stop the bout giving Lachine the win via a TKO. “What a great way to start your career! I am so proud of Lachie, he has worked so hard in the preparation for this fight. His discipline with his diet and dedication to his training was the key to his success. He is an absolute pleasure to train

AS you all know the game of lawn bowls has been a very popular game for many many years considered to be only for the old and retired. We are now seeing a lot of interest from the younger generation with a lot of our Queensland and Australian teams being supported by teenagers and this is great to see. Some clubs are struggling to survive due to the lack of interest in their community and this is very sad. Cooroy is one of these clubs so we are asking for your help. We need more players to ensure the sport we love continues. So if you have ever considered trying bowls now is your chance. Young or old, you will be most welcome. Come down to the Cooroy Sports Hub any Wednesday or Saturday for a game. We can supply bowls and if you need tuition it will be available at no cost to you. Phone Russell on 5447 7716 or email russellbutler4@bigpond.com

and I believe that he has a massive future in the sport,” Coach Mark Evans said. The Impact Boxing Academy will be show casing their skills when the club host their annual Young Guns boxing tournament at the Noosa District State High School on November 5th. First bout will get under way at 3pm. “This tournament continues to grow each year with clubs from all over Australia attending and now New Zealand are sending a team also. It’s the one tournament that these kids get to compete in front of their home crowd. The support that we get from our local community is amazing and definitely appreciated. This event is family friendly and we encourage everyone to come along and show your support. Tickets available at the door. I look forward to seeing you all there,” Mark Evans said.
