CFG head pleased with Cooroy success After over four years of successfully leading the inaugural Cooroy Future Group, president Tex Pipke says he is pleased to welcome new energy into the team. Tex said he is ready to “wind down somewhat” and “give someone else the chance to grow CFG’s contribution to the Cooroy community”. In presenting his report at the recent AGM, Tex outlined the many achievements of the fully volunteer board, including the annual Cooroy Fusion Festival. “It is estimated that over 10,000 people visited Cooroy (in 2017) to partake in this free fun event,” he said. “Committee chair Chris Bell and his intrepid team of volunteers excelled any previous efforts to put on ... far and away the best Fusion Festival ever.” Noosa Shire Mayor, Tony Wellington, said the success of the Fusion Festival has been recognised and is now considered a signature event on the Shire calendar to be enjoyed by all residents. “Noosa Council is extremely happy with the ongoing success and excellent management of the Cooroy Butter Factory,” Mayor

Wellington said. “This partnership between Council and the Cooroy Future Group demonstrates that community involvement can lead to improved activation of public facilities. “Having transmogrified from the Lower Mill Board, I am also aware that the organisation maintains an interest in the whole precinct, not just the Butter Factory. “Council looks forward to continuing engagement with Cooroy Future Group to the benefit of Cooroy generally.” The Cooroy Butter Factory Art Centre has also grown under the CFG, with this year’s achievements including the opening of the BFAC shop (THE SHOP @ bfac) and painting of the inside art space, thanks to volunteers and generous donations from Bunnings and Dulux. Tex acknowledged the efforts of staff and volunteers at the Butter Factory to bring “even better exhibitions and greater visitation to the Centre”. This year the BFAC arts precinct hosted the biannual international potters’ conference ‘Smoke on the Water’ which saw artists from all over the world

Newly elected CFG president Duncan MacQueen with outgoing president Tex Pipke gather in Cooroy and the hinterland with positive feedback received from participants. Other events delivered in 2016/17 in cooperation with the CFG and support from the local community include The Great Noosa Trail Walk, Pink Precinct Fun Trail, the annual Noosa District High School art exhibition and a range of community based workshops and exhibitions. A new exciting event

underway for May/June 2918 is the Local Heroes exhibition, with local artists painting local people. Applications for this exhibition are currently open and close 2 October, 2017. At the recent CFG AGM, Tex Pipke tendered his resignation after fourand-a-half years at the helm. He will remain as Treasurer. Duncan MacQueen has been elected the new president. Duncan has been Treas-

urer for six months. He recently retired from a successful consulting business as a Geophysicist, working with major international companies and is now pursuing his lifelong interests as musician, photographer and now videographer – creative skills which he brings to the new role. Tex acknowledged the role of his volunteer board and the many hours contributed for the benefit of the Cooroy community.

The Uniform 4 Kids program was pioneered by Order of Australia recipient and Cooroy resident Yvonne Pattinson in 2015 who started recycling police uniforms and turning them into

clothing for children in remote and rural areas in Australia. A partnership with the Brighter Future 4 Kids Foundation has resulted in a further collaboration to its successful Shoes & Socks 4 Kids program. The charity aims to provide 100,000+ items of clothing per annum to kids in need, within its first five years. Much to their delight, several items of clothing were recently provided to children in Papua New Guinea. Because Yvonne’s idea has grown so rapidly, she is now looking for some

THE Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank has welcomed a new staff member, with Debbie Podolczak now on board. Delighted to be working in the Noosa hinterland having spent more than 20 years living in Cairns, Debbie and her husband were motivated by the desire to downsize and be closer to family. Having spent the past seven years working for Bendigo Bank in the far north, Debbie’s already feeling right at home on the coast and says it’s all about making the most of what our region has to offer with her husband and two dogs. “Family means a lot to me and it’s great to be closer to them. I’m also a keen lover of sport and a self-professed Sydney

Swans tragic. I’m also passionate about my work and seeing the difference Bendigo Bank branches make where it matters most - where we live,” Debbie said. In Cairns, Debbie saw more than $1 million going back to her community through a variety of projects. “Excitingly, it’s a similar story here in the hinterland and I’m thrilled to be working in a branch that gives so much back to its community. My passion for Bendigo Bank and its principals, products and customers is why I come to work every day. Geoff, Pam, Karl, David, Jo and Amanda have been really welcoming and I’m enjoying getting to know our customers. To be part of a great community and

to be surrounded by enthusiastic and customerfocussed work colleagues is fantastic,” she shared. Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards said Debbie has been a welcome addition to the team. “Debbie brings with her a great understanding of our Community Banking message and we’re excited to add such a dynamic team member to our branch. We look forward to seeing more of Debbie’s skill set in action as she continues to work closely with our local customers, including individuals, families and businesses. “As always with the community bank model, the more the community supports us the more we can give locals and real say and share in our future. That’s

(l-r) Geoff Edwards, Debbie Podolczak and Pam Hoens at the Cooroy Community Bank branch this week our message and it’s that simple,” Geoff said. Locals are invited to visit the Cooroy Community Bank branch and meet with Debbie and the rest of the team to talk about all their

banking needs. It’s located at 36 Maple Street and is open 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. You can also call the branch directly on 5447 7131.

A Steiner School for the Mary Valley? THERE is a small group of mums in the Mary Valley hoping to start up a new Steiner school and they are seeking expressions of interest. In 2019 Steiner education celebrates its 100th anniversary. They (Waldorf or Steiner schools) constitute the largest and fastest growing independent school movement on the planet and are guided by the profound philosophies and indications of childdevelopment by Rudolf Steiner. There are many features of a Steiner education in

the early years, but most importantly, children are not pushed into academia and abstract concepts before they are ready. Pushing children too early can suffocate the love of learning. Readiness is extremely individual. There should be no rush. Like Finland, and many other highly successful educational jurisdictions, formal learning usually starts when the child is 6. The four foundation senses of touch, movement, balance and joie de vivre need nurturing well in the early years.

Many teachers do braingym work with their children first thing in the morning to harness their will and then direct them into creative purposeful activity. New concepts are introduced in the morning. The aesthetic, artistic subjects receive focus in the middle of the day, and finally “doing activity” features in the afternoon - a three-fold day. Storytelling plays a major role in the child’s cognitive, social and moral development. Instead of studying texts in the early years, the children pro-

duce their own story books with colourful drawing and writing. Many learn to read their own writing (drawings) first. Music, poetry, movement, singing etc (ie the Arts) are equally valued alongside more prominent National Curriculum subjects like science, technology, engineering, maths (STEM) and literacy. In fact it is the arts that have the potential to imbed these other subjects more deeply when dealt with at the appropriate age. The Australian Curriculum and Assessment Au-

thority (ACARA) recognises and has registered a Steiner curriculum from Foundation (Prep in Qld) to Year 10. New Steiner schools spring up due to the desire and enthusiasm of prospective parents. If you are interested in the possibilities of a Steiner School in the Mary Valley, please register your interest with Jonathan Anstock (MEd Steiner) jonathan@ teachthechildren well.com.au There will be local talks and meetings in response to community interest.

the mountain,” Bob McCrossin, President of the Rotary Club of Cooroy said. “The Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival is a major fund-raising event for Cooroy Rotary and it is disappointing that we will

fail to generate money to donate to good causes. Last year we were able to assist Sunshine Butterflies, a disability support group based in Tewantin, Duke of Edinburgh students at Noosa District State High School, victims of both the

fires in New South Wales and those Queenslanders affected by Cyclone Debbie and many more.” “We will be keeping the situation under review and hope to be able to plan alternative events in the future.”

news Are your customers paying on time?

COOROY RAG

Geoff Edwards, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank TO improve your business cash flow, you need the period between paying your expenses and getting paid by your debtors to be as short as possible. When you set up a new account, make sure you and your client both agree to the credit terms. This may include discounts for early payment, or interest charged for late payments. Once these terms are in place, monitor them by communicating with your client so they are always clearly informed of when they are expected to pay and also how late payments will be handled. For example, a three-step process may involve a phone call at two weeks late, a letter of demand at one month, and referral to a collection agency at two months. If an existing customer is stretching out your terms, you need to change their behaviour. A lot of owners are scared to request prompt payment because they feel they will lose business by being too demanding, but by not doing this, you have actually become part of the problem. You need to assume a more assertive attitude, because once you’ve provided goods and/ or services, you’re working for free until your customer pays you. However changing behaviour requires a gradual approach. Remember you’re the one who has let them creep out to these longer terms. So, you have to work with them to make changes; you can’t just pull a stick out and start beating them with it. Call them more frequently, and sooner than you usually would. For example, if someone is paying you regularly at 90 days, start calling them at

30 days and say ‘The invoice is due, can you please advise when it’ll be paid?’ You don’t want to lose your client by changing your credit terms dramatically, but do explain to them that you need to be paid on time. If there have been exceptional circumstances that prevent your client from paying on time, find out if what they’re saying is plausible. If they can’t afford to pay the entire amount, develop a payment schedule and be clear on the consequences if the instalment terms are not met. If you have any questions about your business or your banking, please contact me or any of our team on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au. Geoff Edwards is the senior manager of the Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank.

What do you get with funeral insurance? Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* FUNERAL insurance may give you peace of mind but over time the premiums may cost you more than the funeral itself. Here are a few things to consider before signing up for funeral insurance. What is funeral insurance? Funeral insurance is a policy that will give your family a lump sum payment to help pay for funeral and associated expenses when you die. How does funeral insurance work? You pay monthly or fortnightly premiums (ongoing payments) for a fixed amount of cover. Usually you can choose between $5,000 to $15,000 cover which will be paid to your beneficiary when you die. With funeral insurance, you are not saving for funeral costs but buying insurance to meet those costs at some future date. Unlike taking out insurance for a car accident which is an unknown event, we all know that we will die sometime. Because you don’t know when you are going to die, you need to think about whether you can afford to pay premiums for funeral insurance for the next 10, 20 or more years. Funeral insurance premiums increase over time Not only will you need to keep making payments over the years, but premiums are usually ‘stepped’ which means they increase with age and grow over time. Funeral insurance premiums tend to rise steeply for people over 50 and this can cause people to cancel their policy in the first few years, losing the benefit of premiums already paid. If the premium payments

become unaffordable and you stop paying them, your policy is likely to be cancelled. You will not get back the money that you have paid towards your policy. Different insurers have different rules, so read the PDS carefully before you sign up. Read ASIC’s media release on their 2015 funeral insurance report that shows how sharply premiums rise for people over 50 and the types of funeral policies that have high cancellation rates. What to consider before you buy funeral insurance Before you buy funeral insurance you need to check if it is worth the money: • Weighing up costs and other options - Will you be paying more for the insurance than the funeral will actually cost? Have you considered other options you might have for paying for a funeral? • Keeping up with premium increases When your premiums increase, will you be able to keep paying them? Think long term and remember, if you can’t keep up with the payments you are likely to lose all the money you have paid towards the insurance. How fast will your insurance premium rise? Your insurance premiums will go up over time. The PDS will tell you if your cover will increase by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) or by a predetermined amount - which means your premium will rise to cover the larger amount of cover. If you don’t want your cover to increase you can usually opt out of this, but you must contact your funeral insurance provider. Always check

the PDS for these details. Case study: Alice gets funeral insurance Alice was 58 and still working when she took out funeral insurance costing $20 per fortnight. She wanted funeral cover so her family did not have to worry about paying for her funeral. By the time Alice was 71, her premium had doubled and cost her more than $40 per fortnight. It had gone up every year as she aged and to cover inflation. She struggled to pay the higher premium on her much lower, postretirement income. She also knew it would continue to go up each year. Alice added up all the premiums she had paid over the last 13 years and worked out that they had cost her more than $10,000. What is ‘Expenses only’ funeral insurance ‘Expenses only’ funeral insurance means your family only get a payout for the actual cost of your funeral. Like other funeral insurance, you still make regular payments that will increase over time. These types of funeral plans: • Only cover funeral expenses - You may need to prove the funeral costs with receipt. • Can be sold door-todoor - Don’t sign up on the spot if someone is selling you this product at your door. Take the brochures and have a think about it. • Offer you less protection - Laws that protect consumers and their money when buying funeral insurance may not apply to ‘expenses only’ plans. • Offer you less coverage - Exclusions may apply. Should you buy funeral

insurance? There are pros and cons to buying funeral insurance. Here are some key facts to help you decide if it’s right for you. Pros • Immediate cover with exclusions - You can get cover from day one but most policies only cover accidental death in the first year or two. • Helps people who struggle to save - It may suit you if you aren’t sure if you can save for funeral costs. Cons • Increasing premiums Premiums generally go up over time. This means what starts out as a cheap way to pay funeral costs can become very expensive, especially if you are living on a fixed income. • No refund on premiums you’ve paid - If you can’t afford to keep up the premiums or want to cancel your policy, you probably won’t get back the premiums you have paid. • Your premiums could cost you more than your funeral - If you live another 5 to 10 years you may end up paying more in premiums that the cost of the funeral. Visit the My Longevity website to work out your life expectancy. • Exclusions apply in the first few years - As most insurers only cover accidental death in the first 2 years, if you die from a terminal illness in this time you may not be covered. Check the policy’s terms and conditions. • You don’t get the money right away Sometimes it can take a while for your family to receive the insurance payout to cover funeral costs. Other ways to cover funeral costs

If you want to make things easier for your family by paying for your funeral in advance, there are other ways to do this. You could think about getting a pre-paid funeral, a funeral bond, using your superannuation or even saving up for your funeral in a separate high interest savings account. See paying for your funeral for more information on all your options. If you decide funeral insurance is right for you, shop around and get a few funeral insurance quotes. Then you’ll be able to get the best value for money as policies differ between insurers. Make sure you feel comfortable paying the rising premiums over time. What is a BDBN? And should you have one? IF you have any superannuation; then yes. you should. A “BDBN” or “Binding Death Benefit Nomination” is an important legal document for anyone who has any form of superannuation. A common misconception is that your superannuation can be dealt with in accordance with your Will. While that may sometimes be the case, it is important to remember that superannuation does not automatically become an Estate asset. Rather, who receives your superannuation is determined by the Trustees of your Superannuation Fund. In the absence of a BDBN and subject to the terms of the Superannuation Fund’s Trust Deed, the Trustee of your Superannuation Fund may (on application) make a determination to pay either the whole or part the your superannuation balance to any eligible beneficiary, including:1. Your spouse (including de-facto spouse); 2. Your children; 3. A dependent; 4. Someone with whom you have a financially interdependent relationship with; or 5. Your Estate. This means that the person (or people), who end up with your superannuation, may not be the person (or people) you intended. The advantage of having a valid BDBN is that it does just that. It binds the Trustee of your Superannuation Fund to pay the balance of your superannuation funds in accordance with your nomination. That way, if you pass away, the death benefits in your superannuation will be paid according to your wishes. This also means that the distribution is less

likely to be challenged. Depending on your superannuation fund, your BDBN should be updated regularly to stay valid. What happens if there is no valid BDBN? Well, in a recent case, a dispute arose between brother and sister over the distribution of their father’s Estate. Dad had sadly passed away, leaving a valid will dividing his Estate equally between his two children. At the time of his death, the daughter sole executor of Dad’s Estate. Daughter was also the sole trustee of the father’s self-managed super fund. Dad did not have a BDBN. Accordingly, Daughter distributed the entirety of Dad’s superannuation death benefit to herself and gave nothing to her younger brother. Son challenged the distribution on the basis that their Father’s Will clearly stated that his Estate should be divided equally between them. The Court disagreed and held that, as there was no BDBN, the daughter, as sole trustee of the superannuation fund was entitled to distribute the benefit entirely to herself. There was no obligation on the daughter to pay the death benefits from the superannuation fund to the Estate to be divided with her brother in accordance with Dad’s Will. Net result. Son and Daughter still received 50% each of the Estate. but the daughter also received all of Dad’s superannuation. Probably not the outcome Dad wanted, and a timely reminder to us all to contact our superannuation funds and organise our BDBN’s now. For more information regarding BDBNs or any other legal matter call SPM Law on 5440 4800.

How is property divided after separation? No-one needs a lawyer if ex-partners can agree about how property and debts should be divided after separation. Cooroy Legal Centre solicitor Megan Girvan said parties were free to reach their own agreements about how joint property would be shared after separation and divorce. Such agreements did not even need to be written down if expartners trusted each other to abide by them. But what happens if parties can’t agree about what is fair? Ms Girvan said there no single formula used by courts to divide a couple’s property. “No one can tell you exactly what orders a court will make,” she said. “A decision is made after all the evidence is considered and the court decides what is just and equitable based on the unique facts of your case.” The general principles applied during a property settlement case are the same for married people and de facto couples. Ms Girvan said a court would: • work out what property a couple had, no matter whose name it was in, and what they owed; then • look at the direct financial contributions by each party to the relationship, such as wage earnings; and • consider indirect financial contributions by each party such as gifts and inheritances from families; • looking at the non-financial contribu-

tions such as childcare and homemaking; and then • take into account things like age, health, financial resources, a need to care for children and ability to earn. “Your property settlement will probably be different from others you may have heard about, because everyone’s circumstances are different,” Ms Girvan said. “Sometimes, what would be fair in your neighbour’s case might not be fair for you.” Married people have up to 12 months to apply to a court for a property settlement after a divorce is granted, while de facto couples must apply within two years of their relationship breaking down. “If you do not apply within these time limits, you will need special permission of a court. This is not always granted,” Ms Girvan said. “If people can’t reach agreement, they need to get expert advice well before these time limits expire.” Ms Girvan said that dividing property after separation was not a task for the faint-hearted. “Most people are a bit faint-hearted after a separation, so it pays to seek some guidance early. That way, you have time to negotiate a settlement that is fair and appropriate for you.” For more information, call Cooroy Legal Centre on 5447 7637.

VISIT Pomona on Saturday 28 October for the Spring Art Market being held at the Art Gallery between 9am to 1pm. The market is about promoting local artists, artisans and crafts persons, and giving the public an opportunity to meet with our creative community. There will be many stalls exhibiting paintings, ceramics, woodwork, handcrafts, jewellery and more, making this the perfect opportunity to buy local art and craft direct from the artist. Nothing will be priced over $100 and all proceeds go to the artist. Be entertained by FlashJack, playing a mix of Celtic and Old Time Swing.

Homemade goodies and refreshments will be available for purchase. On in the Carriage Exhibition Room will be artwork by Lies Donovan titled “Fabulous Fakes” - the official opening of which will take place at 1pm after the market concludes. The exhibition will run from 27 October to 21 November. The Kindness Club ‘Operation: Local Heroes’ RECOGNISING the wonderful work of our local Emergency Services (Police, Ambulance, Fire Service and SES) in Cooroy has been the focus of The Kindness Club’s latest project. Hampers filled with delicious treats, cards and Certificates of Appreciation, and decorated with the children’s drawings, were delivered to our local stations. A personalised ‘Gratitude Bear’ was included in the hampers as a gesture of appreciation. A special, local friend of The Kindness Club very kindly donated a generous sum of money for the children to spend on kind deeds. The children discussed ideas at one of their regular meetings and Operation: Local Heroes was formed! The gifts were very much appreciated by our Emergency Service men and women. The children were delighted by their surprised reactions and by the kindness shown back to them! A HUGE THANK YOU to all Emergency Service workers for all that you do!

The Black Sorrows @ The Imperial including So Young, Hit And Run, Shape I’m In, Chained To The Wheel, and Never Let Me Go, Joe Camilleri’s music has become part of Australian music culture. As a member of Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons, Joe was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2007. Camilleri has shown fans and critics alike that he is a performer with an undeniable energy and love of it all. In 2014 Joe Camilleri celebrated 50 years in the music business. The release of the highly acclaimed album Certified Blue gave him his first mainstream chart appearance in almost a decade. Certified Blue peaked at #2 in the ARIA Jazz and Blues Chart and remained in the chart for over 40 weeks. 2015 saw the band

Put Friday 20 October in your diary for what will be an epic night when The Black Sorrows take to the stage in the Brewery at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi. The Black Sorrows have earned the reputation as a dynamic live act. At the helm, Joe Camilleri steers the band through an energetic interplay of solid grooves and well-crafted songs that mix the well-worn ingredients of blues, soul, R&B, gospel, country and even Brill Building pop. Spontaneous (forget set lists) and emotionally driven, Joe ensures that no two performances are ever the same. Camilleri’s mantra is simple: “We come to play and leave the audience feeling exhilarated”. Camilleri launched The Black Sorrows, a loose band of like-minded musicians, in 1984 following the demise of his seminal band Jo Jo

Zep and The Falcons the year before. From humble beginnings playing inner-city cafes around Melbourne and selling albums from the boot of a car, Camilleri transformed the band into one of the most sophisticated ensembles in the country. The independently released album Dear Children represented a turning point once CBS/Sony stepped in with a worldwide deal. When radio picked up the classic track, Mystified, The Black Sorrows really took flight releasing multi-platinum sellers Hold On To Me, Harley & Rose and The Chosen Ones. The Black Sorrows have won the ARIA for Best Band, played sell-out shows across Europe and sold more than two million albums worldwide. As writer of other milestone Australian songs

tour Scandinavia for the first time in twenty years in support of the release of ARIA nominated album Endless Sleep. The Sorrows’ 18th album release Faithful Satellite saw a 2017 summer tour followed by shows in the UK and Europe. In keeping with Joe Camilleri’s desire to continually move forward, the latest incarnation of The Black Sorrows is Claude Carranza (guitar/vocals), Mark Gray (bass/vocals), John McAll (keyboards/vocals) and Angus Burchall (drums). Pre-sale $30 (+ booking fee) through Oztix or at the Imperial Hotel (Ph: 5442 8811) until 4pm on the day. $35 at the door. Doors open 7.30pm.

New radio station in Cooroy!

Happy Birthday Kristen Crickety love from your family friends xx

Happy Birthday to Nicole Wedge (October 20) From all your friends and family xo

THANKS to the efforts of passionate locals, Cooroy has a new sound on the airwaves. When Neil Westbrook passed away last year, he stipulated in his will that he wanted the older generation around Cooroy to continue to enjoy Christian music and teaching on radio. Thanks to Neil and his son, this is now possible through Vision Cooroy 88.0 FM. The service sprang to life on 13 September and has just come out of its testing period. It complements the service in Pomona, also on 88.0 FM. “We’re excited to be on air in Cooroy and bringing you a really different radio choice,” says Andrew ‘Robbo’ Robinson - one half of Vision’s breakfast team. “Whenever a new station is switched on, it doesn’t take long before we start hearing from locals how they’ve found it’s engaging and actually is making a positive difference in their everyday life. There’s a lot of negativity about today and we want to bring something positive. You’ll figure out pretty quickly we’re a Christian station but don’t let that stop you tuning in,” says Robbo. Vision is about ‘Connecting Faith to Life’ and it achieves this though broadcasting contemporary music, engaging chat, encouraging real life stories, news and most other things you’d expect from a national radio station. Included in the daily line-up are programmes from renowned Christian speakers including Chuck Missler, Ravi Zacharias and Greg Laurie. “Sometimes when people think of Christianity, they think of something stuffy and out of touch with real life,” Robbo says. “Vision’s not like that—far from it.” “One of our most popular programmes is Focus on the Family - it offers practical help in an area with such a great need,” Robbo explained. “Many listeners are also fascinated by our regular spoken programmes which address things like events in the Middle East and how they impact all of us.” Vision also features its own hourly news service which is syndicated to many other ‘family friendly’ stations across Australia.

dining & entertainment Film & Info session Eric Teckel: A must-see for fans of vintage guitar rock

COOROY RAG

AMERICAN blues/rock powerhouse and guitar sensation is heading to The Imperial Hotel Eumundi for what is sure to be a helluva gig on Saturday 14 October. In an era where pedalboards, laptops and samples have become commonplace, Eric Steckel goes against the grain and takes us back to the days when great guitars were played loudly through great amps. Hailed by many as the top rising star of Blues/Rock, Eric delivers a powerhouse performance that has left audiences in 22 countries (and counting) mesmerized. He brings an energy and passion to the stage that never disappoints and is a must-see for fans of vintage guitar rock. Eric’s latest studio album “Black Gold” takes listeners on a musical rollercoaster that embodies the human spirit and captures the emotions of daily life. It’s his most diverse album to date with soft, dynamic blues ballads to heavy, low-tuned rock anthems featuring Eric’s signature guitar style front and centre. No pedals, samples or drum machines and no apologies for turning it up to 11. Few young guitarists can improve on Eric Steckel’s impressive resume. Eric’s debut CD ‘A Few Degrees Warmer’ was recorded live in 2002 when he was just 11 years old. It wasn’t long until Eric appeared at the 2003 Sarasota Blues Festival where his powerful set became the talk of the day. Before the night was over Eric, was introduced by British Blues/Rock legend John Mayall as the youngest guitarist ever on stage with the Bluesbreakers, with whom he later

Page 16 - Cooroy Rag, October 11, 2017

toured and recorded with. Eric spent the following years filled with marquee festival dates and sold out concert tours in Holland, Germany, Belgium and Italy. Throughout his teens and young adulthood, Eric released several critically acclaimed live and studio albums. 2006’s ‘Havana’ was a hit among blues guitar lovers; 2008’s “Feels Like Home” featured the talented Duane Trucks on drums and recalled the 70’s southern rock era and 2012saw the recording of powerful modern Blues record ‘Dismantle The Sun’. Last year, Eric embarked on a quest to record a fully transatlantic studio album with some of the finest producers, engineers and musicians he knew. This led to ‘Black Gold’ being recorded in both Nashville and Amsterdam. It is Eric’s most successful album to date and a fan favourite. TICKETS: Pre-sale $25 (+ booking fee) through Oztix or at the Imperial Hotel (Ph: 5442 8811). $30 at the door. NOOSA Hinterland: Beautiful one day - a coal mine the next? The powers that be are taking liberty on our land & water, and for the lay person, the process of how this can happen is often unknown. In the interest of disclosure, a Film & Information afternoon will be held on Saturday 28th October, at 2 p.m. in the Cooran Memorial School of Arts Hall. dining & entertainment Charity concert fundraiser

COOROY RAG

THE 2017 charity concert fundraiser for Pomona Family Support will once again feature the highly entertaining bluegrass band ‘Change of Heart’. This lively five-piece band, comprised of players from around the Sunshine Coast, put on an outstanding performance last year and have been asked ‘by popular demand’ to return and play their toe tapping and harmonious Appalachian style bluegrass. This is a very authentic sounding band with a great variety of stringed instruments and vocal harmonies. If you missed this band last year then make sure you don’t miss out this year. Change of Heart will be supported by local musicians Gray and Ann

Liddell and Sunshine Coast violinist Jon O’Brien, who will also make a return appearance from last year’s concert. Some of Gray’s younger music students will be showcasing their musical skills. Pomona Family Support raises funds for local children to go on a holiday camp - who don’t experience holidays away from home. The concert commences at 3pm Sat 21st October at the Pomona Anglican Church (opposite PO). Entry of $7 includes afternoon tea. Come along and enjoy a fantastic afternoon of live music and help support our local children. For more information or donations contact Pomona Primary School Chaplain Paulette Gee on 0414 457 451.

COOROY RAG

Do you need help to spring into a healthier you? AT Silver Fitness Studio Cooroy, Sports Scientist Rod Collins has just completed his first SpringFit 21 Day Challenge with some amazing results. Here’s what one satisfied client had to say: “I think for me personally, I really loved that SpringFit was about more than just losing Kg’s. It put a spotlight on the importance of balance in life; physical, emotional AND mental health. I definitely used Rod’s quote ‘it’s only 10 minutes!’ many mornings when an early alarm dragged me (reluctantly, at first) from my bed, and I was always happy to say ‘I did it!’ afterwards. “I love that Rod engages his participants to make time to plan, to set measurable goals and ensure we are accountable to him, and to ourselves. Knowing Rod was on ‘my team’ kept me on track. Feedback was constructive, genuine, motivating and fair. “The framework set enabled me to pack a ‘tool box’ of useful resources, which I will continue to implement and refer to in the weeks & months that follow; ensuring that I don’t lapse into old bad habits, and remain motivated by new, life-long habits. “From someone who can be a little bit of a perfectionist, I can

actually see now that I don’t have to be perfect every day. I just have to be good. Thanks so very much RC!” ~ S.Cross The next SpringFit 21 Day Program commences on Monday 16th October, 2017. There are a limited number of positions available for the special introductory price of $150 for new clients including 3 weeks of unlimited, small group training sessions at Silver Fitness Studio, Cooroy. Rod says the goal of SpringFit is to help clients create a simple, realistic, health promoting daily routine over 21 days. It will help you break bad habits and create a healthy lifestyle that is sustainable. Rod will provide you with all the support, accountability, education and programs that targets the following key areas: Accountability, Mental Strength, Breaking Bad Habits, Healthy Eating Plan, Daily exercise program - Minimum 20 minutes per day. “You will love the feeling of taking control of your life through SPRINGFIT as it will give you power and momentum to get real results,” said Rod. If you would like to learn more about SpringFit or Silver Fitness please give Rod Collins a call on 0419 482426 or email rod@silverfitness.com.au

Pink October fun trail

I RECENTLY read an article in the Cooroy Rag in regards to Dr Desh joining the Noosa Clinic. Dr Desh is my mother’s doctor, my sister’s doctor and has now become my doctor. My sister is terminally ill and he goes above and beyond his duties as a doctor to care for her making weekly visits to check on her. My parents are both elderly and I recently gave up work so I could help them care for my sister. On one of his weekly visits Dr Desh noticed a small black mass on my left shoulder, he made an appointment for me to see him at his surgery to have it removed, it turned out to be a low grade melanoma, I am so thankful for Dr Desh, left untreated the outcome could have been a lot worse. Dr Desh is a true gentleman, he is extremely caring towards his patients and I will definitely be following him to his new practice. Janine Gilmour

How to help to keep your body happy and healthy every day HERE are some important dietary tips to keep your engine running: Don’t set unrealistic goals and starve yourself. Make changes slowly such as adding a salad to your meal or switching from butter to cholesterol free oil when cooking. If you skip meals, you may find you eat more when you do eat and this may lead to a larger stomach capacity! Reduce portion size – use smaller plates at home, order entrée size when dining out or split a dish with a friend. Meat, fish and chicken should be the size of the palm of your hand. Create new eating habits –Eat with others and NOT in front of TV, take time to chew your food as it can take a few minutes for your brain to recognize you’re full. Ask yourself if you are really hungry and try having a glass of water before your start your meal. Use a small fork; it takes longer to eat, therefore the “full” signal occurs before we finish our meal. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it will give your metabolism a kick-start for the day. Eat 3 healthy meals daily, with small additional snacks in between to keep energy levels up and boost the metabolism. Some examples of good “snacks” include raw nuts/seeds, fresh/dried fruit, low-fat yoghurt & vegetable sticks with low fat dip. Fill up on fruit and vegetables – these are the foundation of a healthy diet and should be in every meal. Aim for at least 5 portions per day. Avoid fruit juice and canned fruit as they have high amounts of sugar.

Water is a vital part of a healthy diet. It helps flush out waste products and toxins. Try to eat HEALTHY carbohydrates as they provide longer-lasting energy and keep you fuller for longer as they are digested slowly. These include whole-grains, beans, fruits and vegetables, brown rice and wholemeal pasta. Try to avoid unhealthy carbohydrates such as white flour, sugar and rice; these are digested quickly and cause a rapid spike in energy and blood sugar levels that don’t last. Dietary fibre is essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system, and makes you feel fuller for longer. Good sources of fibre are beans, fruit and oat products. Include good sources of healthy fats in the form of omega-3 as they are needed to nourish the brain and heart. Sources include salmon, avocados, nuts and seeds. Reduce or limit saturated and trans fats. Saturated fats are found primarily in animal sources (red meat and whole milk dairy products) and trans fats and found in margarines, chips, biscuits, snack food, fried foods, and other processed foods. Protein is important as it gives us energy and is the basic building block for our growth and energy. Limit your sugar consumption. Sugar causes rapid spikes in energy that don’t last. Avoid sugary drinks (e.g. Cola drinks) as they can contain about 10 teaspoons of sugar. Salt should be used sparingly (no more than 4 grams of salt daily — i.e. 1600mg sodium). This will help to avoid fluid retention and bloating and can also decrease blood pressure. Canned soups and frozen meals contain hidden salts that surpass the recommended daily allowance. Avoid alcohol –contains lots of calories and puts strain on your liver. And don’t forget to include some fun exercise into your day! Exercise boosts the metabolism and allows for more calories to be burnt. It is recommended that exercise is undertaken 5 days a week and for a duration of 3060 minutes. The Australian Heart Foundation recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on all or most days of the week. This can be accumulated in bouts of 10 minutes or more if more convenient. Exercise can be aerobic (walking, swimming, running, riding, jogging, skipping, hiking etc) or anaerobic (weight training or sprinting). For more information call into Livelife Pharmacies, Cooroy and Pomona.

health Gut Instinct What is your gut trying to tell you? A SIGN of a healthy gut is not only good digestion, but also passing regular, formed bowel motions and being free from uncomfortable symptoms. Bloating, intestinal pain, wind, constipation and diarrhoea are all signs of an unhappy gut; one that isn’t working optimally. Even though you are not meant to experience symptoms such as these, many people live with them on a daily basis. Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, explains more. When you consume foods and drinks that are detrimental to health (e.g. processed foods, foods you react to, or alcohol), your gut can become irritated and inflamed, and you may experience uncomfortable digestive symptoms. More than 70% of your immune system is found in the gut; and inflammation is your immune system warning you that these foods may be harmful to the sensitive lining of your gut. Ongoing gut irritation has been linked to the development of many health conditions, such as asthma, allergies, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and autoimmune diseases (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, coeliac disease and multiple sclerosis). It can even impact what is considered your ‘gut-brain connection’ – the part of the nervous system that links your brain with the GIT. In these situations, people may find they experience anxiety and low mood when their gut is out of sorts. Certain nutrients and herbs can help to heal gut irritation, leading to relief from uncomfortable digestive symptoms, and improving your gut function once more. Herbal medicines include: Boswellia, Slippery Elm, Golden Seal and Marshmallow Root. Specific nutrients for healing the gut include: Glutamine, Zinc, Vitamin A and D. Prebiotic fibres are also important to ensure your bacteria have plenty of food to keep them healthy and functioning well! Eating plenty of plant-based dietary fibre (found predominantly in vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes) is a great way to improve gut health. Fibre promotes the natural movements of your gut, and adds bulk to the stool, helping to keep you regular as well as supporting healthy bowel function. What’s more, the ‘friendly’ gut bacteria love to feed on plant-fibre – however, when they don’t have enough, they can also feed on the protective gut lining, wearing it down and leading to irritation and inflammation. So remember, to keep your gut microbiota happy and well-fed choose from a wide selection of colourful vegetables and fruits, perhaps some chickpeas or lentils, and other plant-based wholefoods every day. If increasing your fibre makes you feel worse, seek advice from a practitioner experienced in gut health. Good health starts in the gut so make sure you prioritise this vital part of yourself. Remember, even if you are feeling well – make sure to eat a healthy, plant-based fibre-rich diet to keep it that way! Don’t forget to also discuss with your Practitioner which is the best health-supporting probiotic for your needs; or if you are having any gut troubles, how best to get you back to optimal health once more. Listen to the messages your gut is giving you, your ‘gut instinct’. It holds the key to optimal health. Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in a wide range of health conditions. For more information call 0419 668 803, or visit www.nutritionmeans.com.au

BROOLOO artist Sally Luchich loves to think outside the box for the annual Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival. This year, glass of red wine in hand, she was contemplating her future entry for the competition. In true Aussie style, she told me how she hated wasting good glass by throwing away the bottles. “I was thinking of a creating a chandelier, but this was easier, and quicker,” the owner of Sutton Street Studio said. Her collection of bottles was the result of more than three years of hoarding, and she was prepared to part with it - for artistic purposes! “The beauty of this scarecrow is that I can reuse the bottles afterwards anyway,” Sally said. This is her third scarecrow, and she claims the tongue-in-cheek fun of the festival was one of the attractions for her in buying a property in the Mary Valley region. “When you stop by this scarecrow, drop in to my studio and gallery as well,” Sally urged. “Love my country lifestyle.”

She is just one of many Mary Valley residents vying for a cash prize in the annual festival, which is hosted by Mary Valley Artslink. The Mary Valley Chamber of Commerce came to the party with sponsorship for the 2017 event. Scarecrows will be on display from now until November 10, with winners announced at the inaugural “harvest dinner” at Kandanga Farm Store. You don’t have to enter to be a winner either. There is $50 up for grabs by taking a photo of yourself with as many scarecrows as possible in the Mary Valley between October 7 and November 11. Post the selfies on the Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival Facebook page and hashtag #mvscarecrows You can find scarecrows from Conondale and Kenilworth through the Sunshine Coast hinterland north to Dagun, near Gympie. The scarecrow map will be uploaded to Google on October 13, so that you can plan your selfdrive tour.
