The Paralympics were a great event, truly an inspiration, With disabled athletes competing, earning the world’s admiration. The opening ceremony was colourful, with happiness the theme, They were competing for their pride, their reaching of a dream. One cannot fail to be moved by their years of dedication, They have laboured long and hard, with great determination. Not wanting to be pitied, just asking to be respected, And certainly not asking to be over protected. Handicapped as they are, frustrated by disability, They’ve faced their problems, to achieve amazing capability. If they won a silver medal, and not the expected gold, There was no sobbing, they didn’t ask to be consoled. They drove their wheelchairs at a quite incredible pace, And took part eagerly in every possible race. A man with only a leg and a half, competing at the pool And winning all his events, at his interview so cool. Imagine a girl with no legs, playing modified volleyball, Fighting to win her battles, starring in them all. A man with artificial legs, running at almost Olympic speed, And winning the event, a wondrous thing indeed. So let us pay tribute to what these people achieve, What they have accomplished is difficult to believe, To their spirit and their courage, overcoming the frustration, They truly must be admired, an inspiration to the nation. And let us not forget, the parents and partners of them all. Who over those years of dedication, helped and encouraged them to stand tall. Jim Dunstan

Where’s the rolled up Rag? All you have to do is email us at editorial@cooroyrag. com.au or post your entry to: ‘Where’s the rolled up rag competition’, PO Box 898, Cooroy, 4563, and let us know which ad you found it in and the page

AT the October meeting of Cooroy-Noosa Family and Local History Research Group Dr Nathan Garvey BA Hons (QLD), PhD (Sydney), will give a talk on his book, The Celebrated George Barrington - A Spurious Author, The Book Trade and Botany Bay. Dr Garvey grew up in Tewantin and is now a UQ Postdoctoral Research Fellow, School of English, Media Studies and Art History at the University of Queensland. In his book Dr Garvey relates the story of the notorious pickpocket George Barrington, who operated in London in the late 1700’s. An articulate man and a dandy, Barrington attracted attention in newspapers and soon became a celebrity. His criminal behavior eventually led to transportation in 1791 to the convict colony of New South Wales. The book provides a fascinating detailed account of how Barrington’s name became fraudulently embroiled in the fast changing popular English publishing industry - initially in biographies and later in a complex web of other literature. This practice continued after his death in 1804 and well into the nineteenth century. It appears that the phenomenon of ‘celebrity’ and the public thirst for budget sensational material existed in the late 1700’s in England and continues to this day. Visitors are welcome to come and hear this very interesting talk at 1.30pm on Saturday, 6th October at 41 Miva Street, Cooroy. Inquiries 5442 5570.

2012 Cooroy annual ball IT is with great anticipation that the Cooroy Annual Ball will be reintroduced onto the region’s social calendar on Saturday October 20, 2012. It is Noosa Hinterlands social highlight of the year, and has many special guests from the past to regale their table with some personal insights and stories into the magic and secrets held in the Halls past events including many romances (started of course at a Ball) that have led to marriage, christenings and anniversaries all held, yes in the same Hall! A special booklet has been compiled for the night by Betty Sutton with the Hall’s history, complete with photos from the Genealogy crew. WHAT TO WEAR? Dress for the evening is formal and themed as “Elegance through the Eras” ranging from the 1920’s through to current gowns and suits, so anything you wear from this time frame will be perfect. What a wonderful opportunity to get that dusty tux from the closet, and peruse your favourite boutiques and Op Shops for a vintage delight. SHALL WE DANCE? Yes, we shall! Plenty of great dancing, with pre ball lessons available every Monday night in the Hall from 7pm, or the big 3hr session will be on Saturday 29th September 4-7pm. Bookings are essential, so please contact Lyn or Barry on 0402052558 to polish your moves! THE BIG SOUND No Ball is complete without a “Big Band”, and the evening‘s entertainment is superb!

“All That Jazz” is an 8 piece “concentrate” phenomena of professional musicians from the highly popular “Scream Big Band”. “All That Jazz” play the style of music that they love from the swing era standards to modern styles, so dancing and music from all decades to be the flavour of the evening . Musicians for the evening will feature Charley Simms on Sax, Bruce Barnett on Sax, Paul Cuisak on Piano, Warren Bewer on Brass, Keith Doubful on Brass and Calvin Hunter on Drums . Vocalist Tanya McFadyen will delight you with her renditions of many classics, while the band also features some excellent solo pieces. For more information on these great musicians check out the band website at http:// www.screambigband.net/ A BIT OF TRADITIONAL DATING? Balls were always the main opportunity to meet your true love, and this Ball will be a fantastic opportunity for single people of all ages to get together to meet new people, socialise and hit the dance floor in a fun and friendly atmosphere, and for the “attached” to revisit the excitement of their first date. Everyone will receive a special wrist band with their entry so spotting another ‘available’ will be simple. Just like the Balls of yesteryear, every lady (or man) will receive a dance card upon entry. Dance cards are small folding cards containing the schedule of dances or musical numbers with space to write the name of their intended dance partner. Reserving someone’s

Cooroy Memorial Hall - Picture taken sometime in the 1960’s courtesy of the Cooroy Noosa Genealogical & Historical Research Group Inc company for a dance is just like “dating ahead”. And the best part is that you don’t have to be single to enjoy this tradition – the hard part is the ladies ensuring their super high stiletto heels last the distance! WILL YOU SURVIVE? Definitely! There will be a full bar operating for the night as well as early and “later on” suppers so you can dance to your heart’s content as well as keep your energy levels up for a little canoodling out on the front bench under the stars. And that is definitely one of the traditions of the Cooroy Ball! WHY HOLD A BALL? The Ball is a major fundraiser for essential & urgent works to the Cooroy Memorial Hall. Cooroy would not be complete without it’s grand old lady, and she needs some loving. There were huge efforts back in the 1920’s after the war to raise money to build this facility, with dairy farmers assisting by donating a percentage of their cream cheque. As the towns central “hub”, with some works she can provide the region with a range of extra services such as a Tourist Information Centre, house future

projects to deliver economic benefits and employment which Cooroy is in need of, and continue to provide the Community with a venue for their functions, classes, annual shows and the all important historical link to Cooroy’s past. And, besides, she is lovely, and deserves to be honoured for her heritage character that enhances the village!. The Ball is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together, have some fun in these difficult economic times, and celebrate not

only its past history, but its future as the hub of the Hinterland region. 2012 Cooroy Ball, Elegance Through the Eras: Saturday October 20, 2012. 7pm. The cost per person is a donation to the Hall Fund of $50, which includes supper. Bookings are essential & limited - RSVP to Kerry (RSL) on 54476131 by September 25. CAN’T MAKE IT ON THE NIGHT?? Please help by sending a donation the “Hall Fund” c25 Maple Street, Cooroy QLD 4563

Robots taking over Cooroy School

TAKE cover – they’re everywhere! Community Bank manager Fiona Hutchings was bravely on hand last week to present Cooroy State School with a cheque for the expansion of the school’s amazing robotics program and to celebrate Technology Week at the school. The program began in 2009 year and sees groups of students working collaboratively on programming basic commands for Prep students (the Bee-Bots), right through to challenging science or maths-based problems with open-ended solutions for Year 6 and 7 students. “Robotics workshops are an ideal way to captivate young minds and stimulate critical thinking,” program co-ordinator Debbie Niland said. “Robot building and programming teaches a wide range of skills such as problem solving, as well as encouraging team work and cooperation. Students learn not only how to use technology, but also how to create it. During Technology Week the students get a chance to show what they have learned and celebrate the program in front of friends, family and the Bendigo Bank representatives who have made this program possible.” As one of the only programs of its kind on the Sunshine Coast, Cooroy State School knows the school is onto a good thing. “There were races held from our preppies and their Bee-Bots though to Year 3 and our 4-7 students have been actively involved in designing posters about the program with some great prizes from the bank on offer for the entrants’. Many of them are still on display at the Cooroy Community Bank branch as we speak,” Mrs. Niland said. “It’s just great to see the level of engagement of every single student at the moment.

The enthusiasm and perseverance to complete challenges is wonderful to watch and we’re excited to be able to deliver the robotics program right here in Cooroy. It’s a great initiative that sets us apart and we’re delighted to have the opportunity,” she added. The robotics program has been made possible by sponsorship from Cooroy’s Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. Signing a new 3-year sponsorship at the beginning of this year means the program can now expand on its good start in 2009. Cooroy branch manager Fiona Hutchings said the Community Bank loves how far the robotic program has come in the past 3 years. “This is just the sort of project our Cooroy Community Bank loves being involved with. We feel like we’ve grown with it and having the opportunity to be here with the kids and see what this program means to the kids is just terrific. Family and friends of the students and even some interested locals got to the school and saw what this was all about. Debbie and the team have created something really special here,” Fiona said. Anyone interested in learning more about the robotic program or seeing it in action can do so by calling Cooroy State School on 5472 2100.

Cooroy-Eumundi Garden Club THE next meeting of the Club will be held on Monday 8 October at the home of Colleen Hart, 140 Duke Road, Doonan, commencing at 9.30 am. Sandie Johnston will speak on ‘Recycling’. New members are always welcome. For further information please contact the Secretary, John Fenton on 5470 2683 or mobile 0410 485 285.

Tourism Noosa volunteers COOROY has been quite a hot bed of tourist activity of late which just goes to show what a great town we have. Cycle Queensland had over 1000 bike riders plus a team of support volunteers camped at the sporting grounds on the 15 & 16 September. This was the last leg on their trip from Gayndah to Noosa. Many of the riders could be seen wandering around town and partaking in some of the best Cooroy has to offer. The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce had provided a list of what there was to do and see in and around Cooroy highlighting some of the great offerings of the retailers in town. Cycle Queensland provided this to the riders to give them an introduction to our town. On the 18th September a bus load of volunteers from Tourism Noosa information centres came to town and were shown around town and told all about the Noosa Trail Networks, our bird trails, scenic cycle routes, Mill Place and the Cooroy Heritage Trail. The vollies were escorted around town by a few volunteers and finished up with a delectable lunch at Maison de Provence before vis-

iting Lake Macdonald on their return trip. This was a great opportunity for Cooroy as these volunteers are the ones that talk directly to the tourists at the information centres and recommend where they should go. Many of the volunteers were quite surprised at what we had to offer and are sure to send some visitors our way as well as come back to town themselves for another visit. The Chamber has also been busy with a few other activities including Dinner with the Mayor which was a great night at the Cooroy Hotel attended by over 50 people. Also, keep an eye in your letterboxes over the coming weeks as the “Cooroy Envelope” will be arriving to all homes in the area and it is full of special deals from local businesses. The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce does a fantastic job of promoting their members and Cooroy in general. In true Cooroy spirit the Chamber of Commerce is a volunteer not for profit group and those volunteers graciously take time out of their own businesses to organise these things for our town. We think they’ve done a great job – they are one

of the longest running and most active Chambers on the coast! If you own a business and would like to be kept informed of things happening in and around town, join the Chamber! It only costs $105 per year and that includes free advertising on the Cooroy website, weekly newsletter updates, discounts to events and promotional opportunities. As a business owner how can you afford not to? Contact advertising@cooroy.com.au or drop in and see Tania at Cooroy Guardian Pharmacy.

DR Nathan Garvey will give a talk on his book The celebrated George Barrington - A Spurious Author, the book Trade and Botany Bay at 1.30pm on Saturday, 6th October at Cooroy-Noosa Family and Local History Research Group. George Barrington was a notorious London pickpocket whose exploits and appearance caught the attention of newspapers and finally led to his conviction and transportation to Botany Bay in 1791. Barrington’s name became fraudulently involved in the popular English publishing industry of the day, at first as biographies and later in a complex web of other literature, this exploitation continued even after his death. The phenomenon of ‘celebrity’ and the public thirst for a sensational story existed in 1700’s England and continues to this day. The monthly meeting of the Group will follow discussion of Dr Garvey’s talk and afternoon tea. At this years Annual General Meeting held in September the dedicated team of Bev Warner as President, Julie Kinloch - Secretary, Georgina Day Treasurer and Margaret Rickard - Librarian were re elected, Anne Jaekel has joined as Assistant Secretary. WHEN you are overwhelmed with debt, it’s often difficult to figure out the best way to start to manage it. In this column we will explore the best ways to start reducing your debt and protecting your credit history. One of the means by which a lender decides if you are a good risk when it comes to lending is through a credit check. Anytime you apply for credit, it is noted against your name, whether or not the application goes ahead. If you have failed to repay any debts, have been late with payments, or have been bankrupt this is also noted on your credit check. Even if your credit check is clear, you may have been caught up in a cycle of debt, using your credit cards regularly in order to stay afloat. This becomes a trap because simply making the minimum monthly repayments will take you a long time to clear your debts. Ensure that you catch up on any delinquent or overdrawn accounts. If

you fail to make the minimum repayment each month, if you pay late, or if you account goes over the limit you may be charged additional fees, and may find that your interest rate rises or is retroactively charged. If you are often over the limit on your accounts, you might consider a debt consolidation loan. With this, you would roll all of your debt into a more manageable personal loan and close your credit cards. Personal loans generally have a lower interest rate and the repayments are fixed. Don’t, however, apply for another credit card to help solve the problem as this may just lead to greater headaches. If you decide to try to fix the problem without debt consolidation, once all your account are back within their limits, it is important that you maintain the minimum repayment on each account while at the same time put any extra funds into the card with the highest interest rate. Write down all of your accounts, the lim-

its and the interest rates that apply. This will help you to decide which to pay off first. Some people find that paying of a smaller debt first will provide a bit more motivation. Figure out what works for you. You can also approach your financial institution to see if they will reduce your interest rate or switch you to a better product. If you would like to discuss any information about debt consolidation or any other banking enquiry contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at fiona.hutchings @bendigoadelaide. com.au.

Caring for your jewellery

HOW many times do we hear a person who has brought a jewellery item in for repair say “ I never take it off” and then wonder why it does not look the way it did when they got it. Taking care of your jewellery is especially important if you wish to keep your treasured pieces in pristine condi-

tion. It is recommended that you remove your jewellery when participating in activities that may result in impact or when handling chemicals of any nature. Gardening, housework, cooking, playing sport and sleeping are very enjoyable pleasures for most of us but

not the ideal times to be wearing fine jewellery. Normal everyday wear will result in the dulling of Gold and Silver, the wearing down of the bands and the claws which hold stones secure and safe from loss or damage. Your jewellery should be checked at least once a year to ensure that any wear and tear or damage is repaired before stones are lost or additional damage is done. Jewellery Temptations can inspect your jewellery and advise on any repairs that are needed to keep it in as new condition. Saluting their Service grant for Cooroy Pomona RSL FEDERAL Member for Wide Bay, Warren Truss, has been advised of a $3,000 Federal Government grant to the Cooroy Pomona RSL, to help fund the publication of a book, Heroes Out of Reach. “Heroes Out of Reach, written by Marilyn Campbell, is a book about the loss of Dakota A6561, which crashed in New Guinea en route to Townsville on 18 September 1945, killing all 29 on board,” Mr Truss said. “The members of the Cooroy Pomona RSL are to be congratulated on the success of their application to enable the story of this wartime disaster to be read by all.” “The Saluting Their Service program encourages community participation in commemorative activities which honour the service and sacrifice of those who have served Australia in wars, conflicts and peace operations. “This project will help to commemorate the vital contributions made by those who lost their lives in this crash in the service of our country and I am pleased that the Commonwealth has been able to contribute towards the cost of the book.”

Restored Rocking Horse brings joy to World War II Veteran IT was 1944 and toys were hard to come by in war torn Britain, when then Corporal John Price, spied the above rocking horse. The father of a toddler, Vanessa and anticipating a posting to the front line at any moment he wasted no time and bought the horse for his small daughter. The horse was destined to be loved by Vanessa, her brother, Tony, Vanessa’s children, Mark and Sue, Tony’s son John and Vanessa’s grandchildren, twins Zoe and Nathan and most recently her grandson, Aden aged age three,

of Sunshine Beach. Made by Bennet Fink and Co of Cheapside, London, who stopped making such horses in 1907, it is at least 105 years old. The rocking horse migrated to Australia with the family in 1978. After so much love it was by now a little the worse for wear. Even though John, aged 95, suffered a stroke two years ago and now lives in the Kabara Nursing Home, at Cooroy, he remembers buying the horse and the family were keen to have it restored to its former glory. Vanessa recalled seeing a carved rocking

horse at a display by the Cooroora Woodworkers, in Cooroy and decided to ask them for help. A call to the Noosa Library led to the woodworkers and Alex Findlay, a Tewantin craftsman who makes a larger version of the Victorian Rocking horse as a hobby. Now superbly restored by Alex the horse is ready to carry future generations of the family and John can rest easy that his purchase, in 1944, has stood the test of time and been appreciated by his children, grandchildren and now his great grandson.

AS every parent knows, keeping up with your child’s clothing needs can be an expensive exercise. Heading to the local shopping centre with kids in tow can quickly become an ordeal, what with parking hassles, crowds and the sometimes unavoidable tantrum! So how can you turn this into a pain-free experience that saves you big money and helps the environment to boot? Simple, just think recycled and go green online! Buying preloved clothes is far from a new idea but it’s taking a technological leap forward with an ever increasing number of online preloved clothing stores. Internet based facilities such as EBay and Gumtree have become breeding grounds for selling used clothing but they can involve time consuming often frustrating searches for buyers. “I know being a time poor mum myself, I want organised, clear images, competitive pricing as well as a quality product and serv-

ice” says Leanne Cox. So this energetic Mooloolah Mum has launched her own online store - The Grasshoppers Closet which sells brand name recycled children’s clothing in sizes Newborn to Seven. “I wanted to provide a service to help other busy parents but also to do something that has a positive impact on the environment. Clothes rotting in landfill contribute to the production of methane gases. My aim is to make recycled kids clothes more accessible and help with eliminating that problem”. With nothing in the Grasshoppers Closet being priced over $15.00 it is bound to attract many budget conscious families with kids. The website www.grasshopperscloset. com.au includes a blog and newsletter both crammed full of practical tips on how to get your kids involved in the green ethos through a variety of activities, interesting new product reviews and sustainable family fun.

Changes ahead for highway traffic TRANSPORT and Main Roads is making big changes to the way motorists access the Bruce Highway between Traveston and Federal. North Coast Regional Director Dennis Tennant said traffic would be switched onto the new 12km section of Bruce Highway, between Traveston Road and Sankeys Road as part of the Bruce Highway Upgrade (Cooroy to Curra) project. “This is an exciting event and there are many motorists who have been eagerly awaiting the chance to drive on the new highway,” Mr Tennant said. “For long distance travellers, the switch to the new highway will be fairly seamless and some motorists might not notice it until they are driving on the better quality new highway. “For local traffic though, there will be important changes. “Anyone who currently uses the Bruce Highway to access properties between Traveston Road and Sankeys Road, or roads

that connect to that section of the highway, will still be able to use the old highway but will need to take a new route. “They will not be able to access Middle Creek Road, Christies Road, Bellwood Road, Skyring Creek Road, Kenilworth-Skyring Creek Road, Carlson Road and Coles Creek Road directly from the new highway. “To use these roads, you will need to use the Old Bruce Highway. “If you are travelling south from Gympie, you will need to take Exit 253 to the Mary Valley, just after Traveston Road. “If you are travelling north from the Sunshine Coast, you will need to take Exit 244 just past Andrews Road at Federal. “The most important thing is to know how to get to the Old Bruce Highway. “There will be signs in place to help guide you. I encourage you to follow the signs. Do not rely on your GPS.” Mr Tennant urged motorists to check on traffic conditions before travelling. “I strongly encourage motorists to call the

EUMUNDI’S David Frith Jewellery is on the way to establishing itself as a benchmark for excellence after winning an Australian Excellence Award (AEA) in customer service. The home based micro business successfully demonstrated strong practices in delivering quality of service and customer satisfaction in order to win the award. Above a strong field of contenders, Master Jeweller David Frith received an overwhelming response from previous customers in support of his nomination to help him secure the award. In their summation, the AEA Board concluded that David’s determination to suc-

ceed deserved praise and recognition. One customer wrote, “…the high quality of his work and craftsmanship is equally matched to service that’s best described in one word – perfect!” On the national 5 Star Ratings Platform, he achieved an outstanding 4.6, which has seen him earn the High Achiever status by the Board; a level reserved for those in the top five percentile group. Although a jeweller for 25 years, David only became self-employed two years ago and attributes the growth of his business to social media and a good reputation. A former exhibitor at the Tewantin Harbourside Gallery, David hopes the award will help recognition of home based businesses as a credible alternative in today’s market place for consumers looking for quality craftsmanship and affordability.

Letter to the editor I WOULD like to strongly protest the abolishing of the Emergency Services Cadet Program which I have run for the Cooroora Group for 13 years. We have been twice awarded best in state, had numerous awardees in many categories over this time. Our group has become well known for the excellent work we do with disadvantaged and at risk youth. We are determined not to lose this precious community resource and wonderful program which educates our next generation. Although some cadets end up employed in emergency services and some as volunteers with SES and Rural firies, every single cadet across the state becomes able to help themselves and help their neighbours in disasters and incidents through their involvement with the cadet curriculum and skills taught. Surely the value of a community that can look after itself better and have greater resilience is beyond monetary value? ES Cadet groups keep youth off the streets and provide cadets with sup-

port, training and a community “family” which is so important for children of single parent or dysfunctional families. I have been a teacher for 33 years and never in that time have I been involved in such a worthwhile program, where I can truly connect with young people and their families as well as the community. I would not have devoted 10-15 hours a week plus camps, activities

and workshops for 13 years if I did not recognise this program as truly valuable to our youth. I appeal to the community to do everything in their power to assist us to repeal this abolition and reinstate the Emergency Cadet Program for the good of our future generations. Get out and about with Roundabout Tours AFTER many years of travelling Australia in various different guises, truck driver, coach captain and tourist, Clive Sandison felt that showing this beautiful land to other people was becoming a passion for him and sharing his experiences and learning something new every day was what he wanted to do. So when building was no longer kind to his body he hung up the tool belt and went out on a limb, aquired Roundabout Tours and developed it. “Kathy and I pride ourselves on providing a variety of tours, both local and a bit further afield, to people of all ages and walks of life,” said Clive. “The project began initially by offering day tours to the more senior members of our community, a fun way to see something new and meet new people without any hassles. We offer a door to door service with all our tours so all you need to do is get ready, pack a smile and a willingness to have fun, and we will do the rest. “We are steadily introducing some longer tours with our Christmas tour to Stanthorpe last year being a big hit with everyone who chose to spend this special day with some new friends. This year we are again offering a Christmas tour and we have a number of great longer tours coming up to compliment our interesting day tours. We publish a brochure outlining the events coming up in the next three months and this is available by joining our mailing list or on facebook.” Some highlights in the next few months include: Monday 1 st to Saturday 6 th October: Floriade in Canberra. Stopping at Coffs Harbour on the way south and Narribri on the way home and spending 2 full days in Canberra. Tuesday 23rd to Thursday 25th Octo-

It might be a sporting group to a tournament or a hen’s night out on the coast. Want to get the extended family together at the beach... take the bus, everyone gets to relax and talk together all the way rather than being in many cars and then having to find drivers to get home. What about a wedding out of town, let us take the guests to the ceremony and then bring them all safely back for the reception. New pool safety laws are working Jobmatch Cooroy/Pomona

The answer to all your employment needs Having a problem with staff turnover? Is this reducing your stability and profitability? Jobmatch Employment Agency (est. 1992) have motivated, keen job seekers, ideal for long term employment.

CHRIS Bell of Pool Fence Approvals has recently announced that the business is changing its name to Cooroy Poolsafe and at the same time, will be amalgamating with Noosa Poolsafe. The change enables both businesses to utilize resources, particularly staff, and provide a more effective and efficient service to both the coast and hinterland. It also allows the business to draw on the expertise of Phil Montague, a name synonymous with pool safety on the Sunshine Coast. Prior to starting Noosa Poolsafe, Phil was the

auditor for pool fence safety with the Noosa Shire Council and subsequently developed the material that he used in training many of the new pool safety inspectors throughout the state. Whilst the need for new pool safety legislation has been questioned by many pool owners, there is now clear evidence to demonstrate that it is having the desired effect. For example, in the seventeen months prior to the introduction of the new legislation, twelve young children drowned in domestic swimming

pools. In the nineteen months since, the number is down to just three. Still three too many but it is certainly heading in the right direction. Since the introduction of the legislation in Queensland, in December 2010, over 50,000 swimming pools have been inspected. That might sound like an impressive number but in reality, it means that there are still more than 250,000 pools to be inspected by the deadline of November 2015. To encourage pool owners not to leave their inspection to the last minute, both Cooroy

and Noosa Poolsafe have now introduced a unique waiting list whereby owners can book an assessment of their pool that will identify what work they will need to have carried out, to achieve compliance. The owner can then have this work done to suit their schedule, and budget, and then call for the full inspection, and certification, whenever they are ready. The waiting list guar-

antees the owner of obtaining a safety certificate prior to the deadline and by making a nominal payment at the time of the assessment, it also locks in the price in effect at the time, regardless of when they complete the inspection process. For further details on the waiting list or any other pool safety matters, contact Cooroy Poolsafe on 5447 7737 or 0412 043 843.

news Chicks in the Sticks host high tea Cooroy Hotel voted ‘Best Casual Dining’

COOROY RAG THERE could be no more tantalising way to welcome spring than a sumptuous high tea in the grounds of Yabbaloumba Retreat in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland where everything pink will hold sway. Last year’s inaugural Chicks in the Sticks was so successful raising more than $3000 for breast cancer research that organisers knew they wanted to do it again this year on Sunday, October 28. One of the highlights will be Cadenza, a quartet of women whose barbershop performances have been taking the Sunshine Coast by storm. The sound, style and chic of the four women, whose musical performance covers everything from classics to jazz, has to be seen and heard. Lilly Pilly Boutique of Cooroy will show its new spring/summer collection, Affordable on Elizabeth will have the very latest in accessories, featuring the much talked about brand Booradley and members of the Kenilworth Quilt

news Pharmacy celebrates 80th birthday

COOROY RAG

SPRING’S Pharmacy was established in 1932 when Henry Alfred (Harry) Spring came to Cooroy after having served an apprenticeship with a Gympie pharmacy. Pharmacists Alan Bennett and Robin Sharry purchased the business in January 1966. In 1992, Alan Bennett sold his share of the business to Robert Bosworth and Robin Sharry did the same in 1995. The present owners, John and Viv Lowther, purchased the business as Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy from Robert Bosworth in 2007. “We are delighted and privileged to be part of this iconic history,” said Viv. “We also feel extremely lucky to work with such lovely staff and be part of such a vibrant and welcoming community.”

ON Saturday, 13th October 2012,from 9am to 1pm, Pomona IGA will be hosting a “Wiggle for Archie” fundraising event. Major Raffle to be drawn – tickets on sale at Pomona businesses Entertainment for all the family : Colouring competition (entry forms available in store), Clown, Face Painting, Performances, Sausage Sizzle, heaps of giveaways. Come dressed as you favourite Wiggles character and meet “Shazza the Dinosaur”! This fund raiser is to assist Archie’s parents with the costs involved in the treatment of their son’s condition. Archie has malignant tumors in his skull and eye socket that have eroded the bone. Archie, who is 3 years old, has already endured two operations, mountains of medication that is taken daily, and 12 months of chemotherapy has just begun. This is the path they are on, for now, along-

side with as much holistic therapy and remedies that they can get their hands on. Archie’s mum and dad, Cassidy McGowan and Matthew Vanderveen, are long time locals, and currently live in Cooran. With all the frequent travel to the hospital,

time spent away from home, and the emotional stress this situation has evoked, Matt is unable to keep working. Financially, things will be tough for at least the next 12 months, so we just simply want to lend a helping hand, and hope you will too.

BLOOMHILL Cancer Help has opened its new Op Shop in Cooroy at 21 Maple Street. Bloomhill President, Jenny Carroll said the charity was very excited about the new Cooroy Op Shop and becoming part of such a ‘tight-knit’ community. “Bloomhill services more than 900 clients from across the Sunshine Coast, including Cooroy and surrounding areas,” Jenny said. “In fact, a significant number of our clients come from this area,” Jenny said. Bloomhill Cancer Help is a Sunshine Coast based charity and provides support and assistance to those affected by cancer. Operated by a team of dedicated staff and hundreds of volunteers, Bloomhill offers counselling, transport to appointments, respite care and a range of complementary therapies and other practical help. The Cooroy Op Shop is one of six Bloomhill Op Shops situated throughout the Sunshine Coast. “Bloomhill relies on our Op Shops to provide 80% of the funding required to continue providing our valuable services,” Jenny said. Jenny said all the Bloomhill Op Shops were always in need of quality stock, particularly furniture, home wares and bric-a-brac. “We are in desperate need of donations, so in addition to the opening celebration, we are asking people to ‘de-clutter’ their homes and donate any unwanted, saleable items to Bloomhill,” Jenny said. “Donations can be dropped off at any of the Bloomhill Op Shops during opening hours or you can call 5445 6858 to organise a free collection,” Jenny said.

AFTER being awarded a National Scholarship by the Continence Foundation of Australia, I had the privilege of being able to attend the National Conference in Brisbane from 4-8th September. This conference was combined this year with the International Urogynaecology Association conference, making it a wonderful meeting of medical and allied health professionals involved in managing incontinence, prolapse and pelvic pain. The first 2 days consisted of workshops which were designed to hone our skills in

a number of areas including prolapse measurement, management of chronic pelvic pain, pelvic floor strengthening and management of chronic constipation. Following the workshop days, numerous researchers presented their latest findings on issues regarding surgical procedures, conservative management and medications for all continence and prolapse issues. The Continence Foundation annual conference was a wonderful opportunity to further advance my skills in this area

and network with other local health professionals involved in the management of incontinence and prolapse. The knowledge gained will help to improve client management of these common and often debilitating conditions. If you are suffering from any form of incontinence or prolapse, please seek assistance early, as most conditions can be cured or managed well if early intervention occurs. Rebecca Steele runs Hinteractive Physio and can be contacted on 5442 5556.

Exercising less with better results HAVE you ever felt like you are on the exercise treadmill – working hard but just not getting results? Or are you overwhelmed by the thought of having to do exercise every single day without a break? Well rather than give up (or not even start), a personal trainer may be the answer. Working with a professional trainer is much different than the average workout. When working with a personal trainer, the trainer uses their expertise to design an individualized program based on your goals. In addition, the intensity with a trainer, coupled with the trainer’s advice on nutrition, lends itself to much quicker results. Working with a personal trainer also gives you accountability and consistency in your workouts and you’ll be amazed how quick you’ll achieve your goals! Properly executed, some exercise movements are more effective than others when it

comes to improving general fitness or increasing muscle size and strength. Knowing when and where to use the proper movements is a major part of any successful exercise plan. And that is why you get a much more efficient workout with a personal trainer because they can help tailor your workout to achieve your goals with less effort and faster results. “Most clients find they start seeing results from having just one or two sessions a week with a personal trainer. With our busy lives these days, it makes sense to get as much out of your exercise regime as you can. That doesn’t mean it can’t be fun though. It is really important to make sure you also enjoy the sessions,” says Lee Smith of Make a Difference Health & Fitness. Having a trained pair of eyes on you as you exercise is also essential to reducing the chance of injury or strain during workouts. Incorrect training technique can lead to a

variety of sprains, fractures and other painful injuries that can build unhealthy habits and generally hamper your fitness efforts. Having a personal trainer also ensures that you have the proper instruction for each exercise that you do, and provides a knowledgeable guide who can walk you through each individual workout. If you’re anything like the majority of Australians you can sometimes have trouble motivating yourself to go to the gym. A personal trainer means that another person is already committed to your goals for you which can be a significant motivator for staying on track with your exercise routine. If you’d like to see some real results from your exercise regime than give Lee Smith a call at Make A Difference Health & Fitness on 5442 6179 or visit their website at www.madhf.com.au for more information.

Latest Hearing Advancement A GROUP of South Korean youth comprising 10 young adults ranging in age from 20 – 26 came to Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled at North Arm on Mon 27th August. Amongst their group were 4 with a disability. They brought their own press and TV crew from SBS South Korea and did interviews about the benefits to the riders who come to RDA. Our horses coped splendidly with cameras up close and personal in their faces too. The group are part of an International Global Challenges Study Tour for youth with and without disabilities who have sent teams to various countries around the world including Australia, India, UK, USA, Peru and Ne-

pal. The team leaders came armed with a host of questions about RDA. They were able to see several riding sessions with our usual clients and speak directly to parents who gave another insight to the benefits. They had also signed up to experience a ridden session themselves. Most were quite nervous, but our trusted volunteers were on hand to allay their fears and keep them safe. By the end of the session, the smiles were hugely apparent! It was a great experience for all our volunteers and good to know we are about to be known internationally!

SMARTY Pants Daycare is offering a first in Cooroy with a healthy food service at its centre which is being supplied by Noosa based Yummy Tuckers. Mike Whyte, owner of Yummy Tuckers, says he loves coming to Smarty Pants Daycare. “It’s just such a lovely happy centre with great staff, great kids and of course mums!” Yummy Tuckers supplies the centre every day with very healthy morning teas, lunches and afternoon teas all professionally planned by the Yummy Tuckers paediatric dietician. The meals are based on a traditional packed lunch and include such goodies as homemade banana and date muesli bars, pumpkin muffins, poached chicken sandwiches, Maleny yoghurts and beautiful fresh fruits. “Our meals are all preservative free and we are also able to cater for most allergies,” says Mike. “The dietitian has planned the meals

to have a low GI rating so we cut out any sugary highs keeping the children on an even keel throughout their day. We also use lots of unrefined products such as wholemeal flours, raw sugars as well as plenty of fruits and vegetables.” Andrea Mcgrath the Centre’s Director is delighted with the service and has seen the benefits for all concerned. “The children enjoy the variety the service brings and our busy parents are delighted to have one less worry in the mornings whilst being secure in the knowledge that the food their children are enjoying is very healthy. The meals are included in our fees so this really is a hassle free value add for all concerned,” she said. Yummy Tuckers has a website www.yummytuckers. com.au which has some great resources for dietary advice and Andrea can be contacted on 5442 5700 for availability information.

Ride4Hope boosts funding for local school chaplains THIRTY local trail bike riders will lend a hand to School Chaplains by participating in the annual Ride4Hope two day trail ride. Overlanders Motorcycle Adventures will guide riders through more than 400 km’s of South East QLD’s best trails, ensuring the event is safe and enjoyable for all. Each rider will cover their own costs to participate in the ride, while also seeking to raise a minimum of $1,500 each of sponsorship from friends, family and locals which organisers hope will raise over $45,000. straight to assisting local young people in need. The fundraising event will help ensure the ‘Chappies’ are able to continue their important work, such as at local schools Noosa District State High, Sunshine Beach State High, Noosaville State School, Tewantin State School and Sunshine Beach State School. Scripture Union Queensland (SU Qld) has over 500 Chaplains working in around 600 Queensland state schools to provide spiritual and emotional support to more than 340,000 students, staff and parents. Chad Monroe, of Provision Wealth Management, founder of the Ride4Hope said the ride to be held on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th of October would help expand the program and provide the Chaplains with better resources. “The financial support that Ride4Hope expects to generate will help the School Chaplains continue their vital work in the community,” he said. “The Chaplains have built a lot of trust with the kids so it’s great they always have someone they can turn to with their problems.” School Chaplain at Noosa District State High, Shane Brigg, said that ‘Chappies’ play an important support role within schools. “Every young person longs for a role model. For many of the young people I come into contact with, Chaplaincy is often the first point of call for discovering a positive relationship with meaningful adults,” he said. “It is an absolutely humbling privilege to be one of those people that students are happy to come and talk to. I work really hard at being a connector between students and helping them develop empowering links to others as well. Like the proactive support programs we are conducting where students

get to meet with trained community volunteers to work through life issues together. ” “Chappy” Shane, who has been in Youth Ministry for 25 years (a Chaplain for 17 years), said that the work he does assists the school community, students, and their families in a number of ways, including pastoral care and life skills development. “If a family has experienced a critical situation like the loss of a loved one, we are there to help by simply having a chat, through practical acts like arranging for meals, and by linking them with others who can support them,” he said. “Then there are school activities which we get involved with such as camps, school community events, breakfast programs, mentoring, and lunchtime activities.” Jon Colley of Loan Wize is another local businessman who is helping coordinate the Ride4Hope. “SU QLD is in the business of creating better futures – mainly through school chaplaincy. The Ride4Hope was developed to respond to genuine community need and to make a real difference,” Mr Colley said. The Ride kicks off from Maison de Provence in Cooroy and caterers for riders of differing abilities. Riders need to be licensed and must have a registered motorbike. At the end of day one, singer song writer Geoff Parnell will entertain riders around the bon fire with music and comedy. Mr Monroe said many businesses have pledged support including LED Design, Tyres for Bikes, Camera House and Pizza Capers. Mr Monroe urged locals to give generously to make 2013 bigger and better for SU Qld. To donate, register or for further information you can visit www.ride4hope.chappy.org.au or email Chad Monroe: chad@provisionwealth.com.au

Happy 50th Birthday Dad (Barry Webb) from Ben, Dan and Lauryn xo

Congratulations to Brett, Linda and Levi on their newest member of the family, Ryder McSweeney, born at 35 weeks on July 11, weighing 5lbs3oz. All are well and happy.

Cooroy Probus

Irene Scott, Marlene Strudwick and Lyn Pluck created a Healing Heart quilt for special friend Marie Watts.

When Marie Watts began her treatment for cancer, fellow Cooroy Probus Club members Irene Scott, Marlene Strudwick and Lyn Pluck decided to put their sewing skills to good use. They created a healing hearts quilt so that Marie would be ‘wrapped in love’ during her treatment and recovery. Each prepared 21 squares for the quilt with hearts as the main theme. At a home session of ‘stitch and bitch’ these squares were arranged and sown to create this treasured gift. Lyn Pluck put the final touches to the quilt before it was presented to Marie last week at a special luncheon hosted by Lyne Williams. Such a thoughtful gesture admired by all who saw it and really appreciated by Marie. All Cooroy Probus Club members wish Marie well during her treatment.

Happy 6th Birthday to Tahlia Hanson of Cooroy. She had lots of fun celebrating with her friends and family at her Tea party.

Noosa District State High School had four touch teams attend the annual Wide Bay All Schools Touch Carnival in Murgon on Sunday October 9. Noosa District State High School has been a part of the carnival for eight consecutive years, and this year the school had some great success. The 15 years boys’ team and the open boys’ team performed well with victories in their pool games. Mr Quinlivan’s 15 years girls’ team made it through to the semi finals.

Mr Gordon’s 15 years girls’ team won their 3 pool games and the semi-final and they defeated St Pats College Gympie 4 – 1 in the grand final. Outstanding performances on the day were from Jye Baker, Nick Woolley, Fraser Gray and Sarah Quigley. Noosa District State High School hopes the teams can take this success to the Queensland All Schools Touch Carnival in Brisbane in early October. Well done to all teams, Mr Gordon and Mr Quinlivan.

Noosa Christian College took 22 students down to the annual ‘Combined Schools Athletics Carnival’ held at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre, Brisbane on Wednesday 8th August 2012.
